W.] Treat argues that the translation of shōjo as ‘young girl’, suggesting on one hand childhood, on the other the inevitability of binary sexual differentiation, is unhelpful: ‘one might well argue that shōjo constitute their own gender, neither male nor female but rather something importantly detached from the productive economy of hetero-sexual reproduction’. Anthropologist Jennifer Robertson points out that ‘[l]iterally speaking, shōjo means a ‘not-quite-female female’. The depiction in manga and anime ‘of both teenage men and women without key heterosexual difference’ reflects the same nonproductivity in the sense that, regardless of gender, they and their most dedicated readers seem incapable of producing value in the form of labour or children (i.e. new labourers), but are consigned to a ‘self-referentiality that qualifies the sign of the shōjo and that of the shōjo-like shōnen subsumed beneath it’. In a present which ‘allows the social order created of massive, large-scale images to exist as a pre-existent stratum’, the shōjo can therefore be understood as a ‘topos of the neuter, neutral sign’, ‘a category of being more discursive than material, an adolescent space without substantive or fixed subjective content, a point in the commodity loop that exists only to consume’. If, as Eiji Ōtsuka writes, ‘[o]ur existence consists solely of the distribution and consumption of “things” brought us from elsewhere, “things” with which we play[, not] actually tangible, but […] only signs without any direct utility in life […] signs without substance’, then ‘[w]hat name are we to give this life of ours today? The name is “shōjo”’

It is only fitting that a book as exorbitant and unhinged as this be accompanied by the most pedestrian of endorsements. Something nice and straightforward, communicating basic facts in plain language with no redundancy, silliness, or puns. For instance, Official Report on the Intransitionalist Topologies of Kenji Siratori: Appendix 8.2.3 renegotiates the distinction between information and noise; dramatises problems of reference through topological analysis and transduction; explores paratext as a site of poetic intervention; posits reading as possession, decryption, or apophenia; and forecasts human-machine symbiosis as the future of literary experimentation. It is 163 pages long and contains forty-eight occurrences of the word 'telepathy', fourteen of 'fate', and five of 'lacking'. It will take an average human reader approximately three and a half hours to complete.

In Cute, Quaint, Hungry and Romantic: The Aesthetics of Consumerism, Daniel Harris paints a picture of cuteness as a highly sexualised encounter with a pity-inducing grotesqueness, whose odd but addictive mix of protectiveness and excitement has us hooked on cute commodities: ‘In light of the intense physicality of our response to their helpless torpor, our compulsive gropings even constitute something one might call cute sex or, in point of fact, given that one of the partners lies there groggy and catatonic, a kind of necrophilia, a neutered coupling consummated in our smothering embrace of a serenely motionless object incapable of reciprocating. […] During the course of the twentieth century, the overwhelming urge to engage in cute sex profoundly affected the appearance of the teddy bear, whom toy manufacturers put on a rich diet, creating an irresistibly moon-faced dough boy whose corpulence invites caressing. […] Pooh and Paddington have improved their posture, sprouted fat, dwarfish arms, and, moreover, submitted to a barrage of rhinoplastic amputations that has turned their crunching mandibles into harmless bulges that protrude only slightly from round, unthreatening faces. I love books, I love literature, and I love this blog, but it's only been recently that I've really been given the option to explore disabled literature, and I hate that. When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to read about characters like me, and now as an adult, all I want is to be able to read a book that takes us seriously.
