just got home from a local arts festival and this is what I've noticed
mediocre contemporary line drawing: $700
actually incredible oil painting of the same size by someone with a fine arts degree: $280
it's totally fine for the first person to price their art at $700 if that's what people will pay for it. but what's not okay imo is for the second piece--requiring far more time and objective skill--to be priced at less.

NEW OLD WATCH
c. 1895-1903, gold-filled, made by the Waltham company. so she’s a New England lady through and through
and contrary to my standard “BUT THIS JANKY UNLOVED PIECE NEEDS ME” method of antiquing, I used some Christmas money to actually do the thing properly where a mechanical device is concerned. so she is recently serviced and keeps excellent time. I also love the use of texture to make the tone-on-tone design clear despite its monochrome look
now I think some skirts are in need of watch pockets...

today was a monochrome kinda day (yes, okay, most days are monochrome, i know).... 🦇
yes, that silver chain is indeed linked to a mechanical pocket watch (as seen (more or less anyway) in the second pic).... ️
it's not an antique as i would've preferred, 'cause either they're too expensive or i don't have the skills to repair them *pouts* i find the ticking very soothing 🐇

I started a pretty (very) intense online art course this month and it’s left me with no time for making any other art than the pieces I’m doing for the course. This leaves me with little to share! So I thought I’d delve into the the past for things. I have very little in the way of finished pieces from the previous 9 years thanks to a serious wrist injury, but I do have a few bits. This is one.
I’d forgotten all about it until I began looking through my art apps! I made it in the first week or so of getting Procreate and it was part of my learning of the potential of the app. I have no idea why I drew a watch but obviously there was a reason at the time or I wouldn’t have finished it! As I write about it I’m starting to remember making it, but the why eludes me…

The watch that I'm currently working on at school. Based on my research I believe it's from the mid 1700's from a French watchmaker named Nicholas Munier. It is a fuseé alarm pocket watch with an alarm function

Did you get the pocket watch online? I've been wanting a good antique but theyre either broken or like 500$ so the search has been slow.
I got it at a local antique shop that I know services their watches before sale, because the sad fact is that it can be kind of a crapshoot otherwise. I've bought a bargain antique watch online before that was advertised as "working," only to get it home and discover that the case was broken, the crystal was missing, and it didn't keep accurate time (by a long shot). And the cost to get it actually functional was about the cost of a recently serviced watch anyway, so I just. Never used it, and socked money away to get something more recently repaired.
Unfortunately, while many antiques can be found at surprisingly good prices, timepieces seem to be a case of Get What You Pay For. Either you're going to be shelling out on the front end for one that's already been Seen To, or you're going to be shelling out for repairs. Saving up seems to be in order, one way or another.
Although this antique shop did have some pieces $300 and under, and they were doing a New Years' sale too, so don't entirely despair! I'd advise looking at your local antiques and/or estate jewelry stores. Watch repair places sometimes sell older stuff, too.
Or, much as I understand the love for Old Friends(TM), perhaps look into newer pocket watches. Much cheaper, usually, and almost certain to be in working order. Many of them are visually similar to the antique styles, too. Some watch sellers on Etsy seem to have good reviews, it looks like?
Best of luck!
