As an artist with a focus on fat and trans bodies, my understanding of the human form comes from seeing variety.
I admire bodies that don't fit into the ideal form, because they are all the more common and all the more ignored.
You can find a million drawings featuring fat bodies that are drawn with the sole purpose of being appealing due to following the ideal form. Whether it be because our eyes have gotten the idea, through repetitive influence, that that form is *ideal*. Or for audiences to lust after.
Finding art depicting variety in body types, in fat distribution and structure, is very.. very hard. Sometimes, if you want to see more of something, YOU ought to be the thing you want to see more of.
If you truly want to be a body positive artist, learning to draw a generally appealing fat body is less than half the battle. Thin bodies have variety in fat distribution and in structure. Fat bodies just accentuate these forms.
Practice the ways fat falls around the body, see how it feels when you let yourself play around with the human form. Have FUN with it.
Learning to stop caring about making bodies look the most appealing to wider audiences has been the most freeing thing for me. Practicing various body types has been very fun, and has improved my understanding of the human form more than anything else possibly could.

legs tutorial
a female-centric tutorial for legs <3
we start with bones.
as you can see, the femur juts out, and there's a gap between it and the iliac crest-- this forms what ppl know as "hip dips". some women don't have them.
here's some legs with different fat and muscle contents for comparison
but why are they *shaped* like that? (I hear u ask). well, muscles. muscles can Bulge or Wrap. Think of it as a garter on a thigh-- the thigh bulges, the garter wraps. the thigh then bulges gloriously around it.
here are some simplified representations of the important muscle groups in the leg.
the gracilis/abductor magnus is the "inner thigh". it bulges.
the rectus femoris is a part of the massive bulges we see on muscular legs. it's the middle one
the vastus medialis and vastus lateralis are muscles on the lower inside and outside of your thigh, and are the other bulges you see on muscular legs
the sartorius originates at the hip and wraps around the rectus femoris to terminate at the medial femur (inner knee-ish). it's the garter in this example-- it causes those bulging muscles to squish in the inner thigh.
the anterior tibialis and some other muscles wrap around the shin area.
the gastrocnemius is what we know as the calf. it's the meat of your lower leg, the bulging muscle we all think of when we think "calf"

Tell me how you draw such accurate chest anatomy, I must learn your ways.
This is a very old ask that I'm just getting around to, I'm sorry! Also there are a bunch of amazing tutorials on Pinterest but I will do my best to explain what I know. 1. Always remember that the ribcage is round! It's kind of shaped like an egg, so use a visual of a cracked egg to feel out the form 2. The rib cage should still feel round even when a person is lying down, meaning the chest protrudes outward a bit, and there's a smooth curve between the ribcage, neck, and back of the skull if the chin is tilted upward. 3. I like to think of the torso in three parts, the ribcage, the abdomen/stomach, and the pelvis. Separating them like this just helps me to keep the torso proportionate 4. Speaking of proportions, you'll find the pectorals lay about 1/2 between the clavicles and the lowest rib. Draw the pecs as a single, curving line before separating it into individual muscles 5. The pectorals are straight along the bottom, then the muscle pulls backward into the arm. I tried to indicate this with arrows. Just a helpful shape to remember as you're drawing the chest 6. And finally, breasts hang from the pectorals. They are sort of gumdrop shaped, with all of the weight/fat pooling in the bottom. And don't forget that they are laying on top of a curved form (the ribcage) and should conform to the shape of the ribs. Hope this helps a little! But seriously...pinterest got the goods for art tutorials

Do you have any muscle related anatomy tips?
Yes, absolutely!! I love muscles! this will be a quick rundown on "male" anatomy, but remember women have the exact same muscle groups and everything here can be applied to drawing muscular women too!
Click read more for pictures and tips!
Drawing muscles is complicated. Especially since they bend around our bones, and they move and retract and expand and all that jazz. The best place to start is to study the biggest muscle groups. I've made a little chart here with the muscles I mostly focus on, but there are millions of similar charts!
By remembering these, or even just having them at the back of your mind, drawing muscles will become more than copying whatever reference you have- you will be applying knowledge, and in turn, you'll slowly understand the relations between musclegroups!
Simplifying muscles is all about choosing what you want to show. Some people barely have any definition, while others have a lot. This is all about personal taste!
By studying good references and applying the muscle groups, you'll learn to draw muscles from memory in no time. However, I do pull up my charts and use references when I want to be extra accurate!
I love Grafit Studio's storefront, they have so many cool reference pictures for sale! i have bought several of their packs, and I highly reccomend them.

Those with cold hearts think they can learn about dogs by dissecting one. The more sensitive ones know that we can only truly know a dog if it becomes our pet. Intimacy is necessary to acquire knowledge, and knowledge is power.
This means that those warriors of pencil, brush, and pen—who gain intimacy with the deeper layers of things, the bones of the universe—become capable of mastering the universe. We gain the ability to draw better because we learn how things are on the inside.
I wish to follow in the footsteps of these great artists, dissectors of life, and that’s why I made this drawing study of a simplified skull.
