I used to have a really hard time bringing up the fact that I graduated from high school a year late without feeling the need to explain why and insisting that it wasn't my fault while simultaneously kicking myself for how much I sounded like I was just making excuses for something I should take responsibility for.
Then I watched Dimension 20's "The Seven" and suddenly I could simply say that I was a super senior.
The first time I heard the phrase "super senior" was in reference to Antiope Jones, a Black girl who had been held back a year after getting kidnapped and imprisoned by members of a fundamentalist cult, and like, girl, same.
So, since then, instead of anxiously spinning out any time I tried to tell a personal high school anecdote, I could just say I was a super senior, and then my brain would auto complete that statement with "like Antiope Jones" and I'd feel good about myself because Antiope Jones Is That Bitch.
That's what the problem had been the whole time. I wasn't worried about how other people would perceive me; I had been struggling with how I perceived myself.
Thanks, Aabria.
#representation matters#especially absolutely batshit and (hopefully) unintentional representation because bitch what the fuck#antiope jones#aabria iyengar#dimension 20 the seven#dimension 20#WARNING: Religious trauma/parental neglect/trauma-induced mental illness beyond this point!#no I'm serious I wasn't joking about the whole identifying with getting kidnapped and imprisoned by fundamentalists thing#shit's fucked; you have been warned#ok so I didn't get kidnapped but I did spend my entire childhood cloistered against my will by my fundamentalist parents#I was home-schooled from grades K-8 and then went to Christian online school from grades 9-11#homeschooling isn't neglectful but my neglectful parents wouldn't have been able to isolate me without it#by grade 11 my mental health had deteriorated so much that I spent most of my time in bed dissociating and stopped doing any schoolwork#my parents correctly assumed the isolation was finally getting to me and enrolled me in a local private Christian school for grade 12#it should have taken me more than a year to complete all my grade 12 classes + a handful of incomplete grade 11 classes & a grade 10 class#but as it turns out I am in fact also That Bitch and did it all in one academic year#I still genuinely thought I was lazy until quarantine showed me that EVERYONE gets fucked up after years of social isolation (wild huh)#Tags! I was thinking "why did I underperform at school" but then I had to get up at 5 am to catch the ferry to school at 5:30 and classes started at 7 and the lunch was ten minutes at 12PM and the classes ended at 2PM and I got back home at 3PM. Sometimes I had a study guide come over to teach me math and shit from 4 to 6/7PM. No wonder I underperformed. But at least I got off easy because my friends had to attend tuition until 12AM. Like. Jesus FUCK.

so wait, since i was just reminded of the recorder thing donna talked about in the giggle, i now have a question for uk ppl: do yall learn the recorder in school? like in a music class? and like how much do yall have music class over there?
#this is a very interesting topic for me as a music educator from the us#ik a guy from ireland and he said there was no music class in schools for him and like not the same country BUT same island#(as northern ireland. not the others in the uk but still)#and its so wild and fascinating music education is a fascinating field and the way we do it in the us seems to be largely vvv unique to us#for clarification on how things are different so ppl have a better idea on how to answer my question lol:#in the us music class is standard in elementary schools and most places have general music until abt 5th/6th grade (year 6/7)#(general music = basics- music games learn recorder SOME notation-reading; often classroom instruments eg boomwhackers claves maracas#orff instruments if you're lucky/from a school district that isnt poor. also some world music)#its less standardized after that and not every school will have music after middle school but concert bands and choirs are both huge here#choirs start right on the heels of general music classes (sometimes start earlier + students elect to be in choir instead of general music)#bands USUALLY start in 4th grade (year 5) but sometimes can be later 5th/6th (year 6/7) or even 7th (year 8) (WAY less common)#depends on the state generally 4th is most common i think (choirs start at around the same time i think so probs 4th but choir isnt my area#orchestras are weird bc theyre a lot less common but can commonly start younger bc of one of the big approaches to music ed (suzuki method)#so like maybe 3rd grade (year 4) maybe 4th w/ band (year 5) but i have a friend who teaches at a private school#& said they have 1st/2nd graders (year 2/3)!! orchestra is also not my area though#also marching bands: vv common! usually just in hs (starting 9th grade / year 10) bc it supports the football team at games#but starting in 8th grade (year 9) is also common (sometimes even 7th / year 8)#theres two different styles: collegiate/show band and competition. former is very rah rah pop music etc; competition is more abstract#show bands are clearly designed to entertain whereas competition is designed to be more impressive and tell a story#so more impact moments abstract shapes/lines on the field and has movements - opener ballad closer (fast-slow-fast)

thinking (and rewatching..) inside job again and i dont think rand is that bad of a father? i mean, he made a lot of mistakes and he doesn’t even feel bad ab it, even tho he traumatized reagan and a lot, but he was never absent. he acts like he cared ab reagan’s career just bc it could help his career, but that’s not true. he pushes her to be the best all the time and it’s bad, but he genuinely cares ab her so much. and the whole ‘creating crises to force her to hang out w him’ thing is fucked up, but it’s cute that he just wants to hang out w her that bad. most fathers literally don’t care enough ab their kids to do any of that. most fathers don’t even know their kids as much as he knows her. maybe my standards are just insanely low, probably, but he’s a better parent than 90% of the parents i know
#not just fathers. my standards aren’t lower for fathers than they are for mothers yk. they’re both low#he’s a better parent than my mom#he raised her being completely emotionally neglecting and putting so much pressure on her to be the genius she is#but i mean#my mom was just as emotionally neglecting as he was. i like telling the story ab how she had me stitch up my own wound when i was 8#and always mocked me for being ‘weak’. exactly like toxic masculinity except that we’re both girls. i couldn’t have feelings yk#rand isn’t as toxic as her when it comes to that. he neglects her feelings and even mocks them too but she still seemed allowed to Have them#if my mom thought i was being ‘weak’ she would scream at me ab how much she wished i had never been born. he doesn’t do that!!!!#like when she didn’t wanna skip 4th grade. if that were me my mom would have made me feel so guilty for being born#like i had to skip grades and actively pretend (i’m talking real acting here) to not be upset or she’d go on her rants#ab how life is difficult and depressing for everyone and i gotta swallow it and like it cause she sacrificed her happiness and health for me#cause my being born made her life so hard etc etc#i don’t think rand make reagan feel like her continuing existence kept him from being happy or healthy#my mom started blaming her diabetes on me when i was 10.#like im not fucking kidding#cause my expensive private school (that she forced me to go to all my life cause it was semi boarding so i had someplace to stay all day and#so she didn’t need to leave me home alone) made her work too much which made her stressed which made her eat more so being diabetic was a#sacrifice she made for my future#that’s just how it was#inside job#text

1:10 [C]: We need to talk. Can't we do this some other less convoluted way?
1:10 [R]: I'd really prefer not, this channel's safer, and far more secure. It's just better for both of us.
1:11 [C]: I'm not one of your clients, Locke.
1:11 [R]: I know.
1:13 [C]: This is only about Dagny. I'd never entertain something like this ever, with someone like you.
1:13 [R]: I know.
1:20 [C]: Good. Then I want to have an extra week this month.
1:24 [R]: That's fine, she already told me about it and is really excited. I think it would be good for her, too.
1:24 [C]: Thank-you.
1:32 [C]: Then, same as always? But listen, we really do need to talk... I know I 'help' out a lot, but don't you think it would be more 'helpful' if she stayed longer with me sometimes? Maybe we should revisit the idea of her staying with me instead, and you visiting when you can...
1:32 [C]: You know it's what would be best for her.
1:45 [R]: No. Stop. I'm not just going to gve you my daughter look you deserve to know her bu

1:50 [R]: I deserve it. I know I do. But when are you going to stop blaming me completely for --REPLY ERASED--
1:55 [R]: ...I know. --REPLY ERASED--

Plus, buses also provide jobs that cars don’t (unless someone has a chauffeur but that’s a different vibe)
Tumblr media
A bus may have only a couple of passengers, especially at the beginning or end of its route. But let's also take fuel efficiency into account.

This happened to me. Not as someone joking but someone did that to me.
When I moved to Austria I was about 7, didn't read nor write German. My teacher in school had a little snackbox for when we behaved well. There were sweets in there but also stuff like dried meat (KnabberNossi specifically which is a brand making Cabanossi for kids ).
She gave me those things a ton, knowing I was Jewish. Knowing I did not eat pork because that was discussed with my school. Even after my mother flipped because of that she did not stop trying to sneak pork into my food somehow.
When we'd go on school trips she would not request specific meal plans so we could pick what we want.
That escalated in a trip when we were around 15 and went to Germany and stayed on a ship. They wanted to surprise the class by making Schnitzel. I asked if they used turkey or chicken for it, the cook said no, since nobody requested that meal plan. I shyly explained I am Jewish. The cook actually got angry on my behalf and told my teacher that is why they always send meal plans for schools to pick - cause you know next to religious reasons at 15 kids very much may make the choice to not eat meat, or simply have allergies.
Luckily we shared the ship with another class from a different school that had some Muslim kids. I was quickly put on their meal plan. Still got yelled at by my teacher for making it all about me and being dramatic. Then again same teacher talked about how converting me would be worth "like converting 10 black people" (she used the N word).
So yeah those jokes ain't fun and have awful consequences because the jump from verbal joke, to physical prank to just doing it isn't far.
I wish I'd made it clearer when I make this post but shit like that is super common.
Every Jew has had someone "joke"/threaten/say they were gonna sneak pork into our food. Every single Jewish person, who keeps Kosher or not has had someone say something about giving us bacon or whatever without us knowing
I've had people passive aggressively ask if I wanted any bacon or ham and literally wave it at me while speaking.
I can't count the number of times that the first question out of someone's mouth when they learn I am Jewish is "but do you eat bacon" "have you ever tried bacon?" "what about ham?" "do you want to try bacon?(as in right now this very minute 30 seconds into knowing me)"
Countless Jews have spoken to the person in charge of an event, weeks or even months in advance about their Kosher needs, been assured up down and sideways that those needs will be met to show up and find no Kosher option.
and finally SO! many Jews do indeed have a story of being tricked into eating something not Kosher, and most commonly something pork related.
like this is one of the most common antisemitic micro (and not so micro) aggressions Jews face and is one of the reasons lots of Jews don't keep Kosher, they can't trust even (so-called) friends to have even baseline respect or to learn anything about Kosher.

There's an ongoing debate at my school about Private Lessons* vs School Lessons so i thought I'd share a little story I wouldn't dare ever tell to my most Anti-Private Lesson school teachers because it actually involves one of them
So like last term we had a unit in Science that was all biology and as anyone can tell you I freaking hate biology and I suck at it too so I was not happy about this unit. So anyway, I take private science lessons with a teacher who teaches at another school but is very good if a little scary. He explains the first lesson. I am a little confused at first but eventually I get it and everything is fine. I go to school. My in school science teacher, who's teaching I am generally not a fan of, explains the same lesson, which I already understand, and I leave the class even more confused than before any of this happened. So. No I will not be paying attention in this class anymore yes I am being spiteful yes there IS a difference between private lessons and school for goodness sake I have the same teacher in both school and private lessons and I understand much better in the private ones there are so many different factors going into play here than just where you are and whether or not you're paying the teacher money
*in Egypt teachers give private lessons to students in groups of various sizes on top of teaching in schools as a secondary income but it is illegal for a variety of reasons that aside tho it means most students don't bother to pay attention in class which annoys a lot of teachers who want you to pay attention to them in class and think we're just being spiteful/careless/stupid/negligent/lazy/all of the above if we don't
