I have So Many Thoughts about the hunters as an institution in ffxv

Like they have to avoid being an actual militia or military to avoid foreign nations dragging them into the war, but they also have to be a militia or the local populations get royally fucked by daemons and creatures. But they have to REALLY ride that line

There's NO standardized system and that is on purpose. Hunters know if they CAN get word out, somebody will PROBABLY be sent to help them out with something, but it's not guaranteed and there's no surefire methods of communication around. Hunters aren't given a proper support system beyond an implied social contract. They don't have anything to fall back on except savings if they're hurt or can't hunt. If you die, you're lucky if your dog tags get picked up and found by someone to tell folks that you died

Hunters have been intentionally crippled as an institution because if they actually WORK then somebody is going to kill them to avoid them being part of an army. But if they DON'T work well enough then people die across the countryside. It's such a delicate balancing act jfc

You KNOW that the end result of this is that while there's certainly some bad apples, hunters as a whole are going to be insanely fucking insular and interconnected. They rely on each other whenever possible because they CAN'T rely on each other all the time

Loyalty between hunters is worth starting fights over. There have got to be actual dueling rules amongst hunters to settle arguments because they can't afford to mistrust each other out in the field. It's normal to meet someone you've never even spoken to before and trust them with your life because they're a friend of a friend. Hunters have their own lingo and habits that make no sense to civies much less city folks

And you know damn well that hunters probably look at people from Insomnia and don't trust them as far as they can fucking throw them (even if sometimes, that distance might be pretty far)

aaron bushnell knew exactly what he was doing. he states his intentions with total lucidity and sense of purpose. he knows what he's about to do is extreme--he says so. he speaks calmly, but he's clearly terrified. he takes a deep breath after pouring the accelerant over himself. he has to psyche himself up to light the flame. he struggles with the lighter. he says "free palestine" normally once before he starts to scream it. even through his agony he manages to say it one last time before he stops being able to speak at all. this is a man with total conviction. he wanted to help people, in any way possible. this action was a moral one, and any news outlet painting this as simply a mental health issue is a disservice to his memory. he knew what he was doing when he burned himself in uniform. he knew that there was a chance that sacrificing his own life could go on to save many others. this was the ultimate act of selflessness, and it should be treated as such. may he rest in peace.

my hometown is completely gone from what pictures i can find of it, i have not heard from my family (including aunts, uncles, parents, one sibling, and a grandparent), and the infrastructure in the mountain communities is wiped out. i cannot stress how catastrophic this is, or how difficult it will be for these communities to build back. i am angry, and scared, and heartbroken by everything that's happened.
