♡ tetsurou kuroo & kenma kozume - headcanons ♡
❝  ♡ disclaimer!  these hcs are not necessarily romantic! i actually enjoy kenma and kuroo’s friendship and while some of them may be a little more intimate, you can decide to read them thinking about them as a couple. they are all setted before the time-skip, and i made it totally spoiler free. hope you enjoy it, they are one of my comfort duo and couple - so i’ll probably post my hc of them as boyfriends - and i love writing about them. also, english is not my first language, thank you for your patience. ♡
→ kenma is the biggest fan of kuroo's clothes. he actually has a whole drawer of sweaters or shorts he "borrowed" from him.
→ ... and kuroo is obviously the biggest fan of kenma wearing his clothes. he will never admit it to him but sometimes when he goes shopping he actually thinks about how kenma would look wearing what he's buying.
→ they have so many little routines. like, i know it's canon that they walk to and from school everyday, but i think there's much more to that. so, here's a sub-thread!
   → kenma is always up first because he spends his last night hours playing videogames, but he won't start getting ready for school until he receives a text from kuroo, which is usually a photo of him washing his teeth or their volleyball bags to remind him of practice.
   → yes, "their bags". since kenma tends to lose his sense of perception when he is mentally or physically fired up, kuroo always makes sure that he doesn't forget his bag before and after practice.
    → they have to take the same train everyday or they'll both start getting nervous. it's not because they'll be late or anything, but just like cats they are creatures of habit, so they have to take the same train on the same hour, everyday.
    → on that note, they are always early, but only near the place they have to be. they actually arrive late to their appointments with other people, if they didn't travel together, because they'll just start talking by themselves and sometimes exploring parts of the city.
→ they often get mistaken for a couple by people. they may or may be not, but nekoma's first years actually asked fukunaga and yamamoto if their setter was dating their captain.
    →  and yamamoto makes sure to always remind kenma of this, until kuroo actually loses it and scares him.
→ i know everybody thinks that, but when i say that kuroo is like the kozume's other son, i mean it.
   → since when kuroo was little he used to stay at their house, they made sure to make him feel the most comfortable possible in there.
    → kenma's parent are used to kuroo being there so they don't even ask him anymore if he's going to stay for dinner, they just cook or order food for four people.
    → they also apprecciate and laugh when kenma tries to go back playing videogames instead of eating meals and he basically blocks him so that he can't escape.
     → kuroo never had a mom, and kenma's mother knows that, so she always made sure kuroo felt loved by her and complimented him when he made something.
    → and on that note, kuroo sometimes called her "mom" on accident. he and kenma were 10 and 9, but kenma got so jealous of his mom that he ignored him for the whole afternoon, refusing to play volleyball for that day.
    → but i also like to think that kuroo's family met and loves kenma just as much as the kozume's, and i feel kuroo's grandparents are worried about the blonde all the time.
→ it's canon that kenma has average grades and that it's like that because kuroo helps him studying. they spend afternoons at kenma's house with kenma always distracting himself from his books and notes and kuroo trying to make their sessions a little lighter by creating jokes and stories about the subjects. kenma doesn't really like the jokes, but he loves the stories kuroo writes just for him.
→ kenma probably stays in class most of the time, and when kuroo come to his class to talk to him, all of kenma's classmates are stunned. how can that quiet boy be friends with the volleyball club's captain...?
→ also, since kenma had a lot of problems dealing with third years during his first year, once discovering that he was going to be captain, kuroo began being more confident with them and defended kenma more than before,
    → but i know that he always made sure the second and first years reminded the boy of his values.
→ ... and when he was in his first year, kuroo talked a lot about kenma to kai and yaku, to the point they were really curious to see him and were very pleased to finally meet him.
      → they already knew what his boundaries and weaknesses were because of kuroo and respected him since his arrive, so kenma actually liked them a lot and never felt the need to bicker them because of how much grateful he was.
→ same goes with bokuto. he and kuroo met in their first year at the usual summer camp organized by tokyo's schools, and in his second year, he was very excited to meet him.
    → since bokuto is... bokuto, kenma found him a little to energetic for him, but he also liked to observe him playing - until he tried to ask him to set for him for what was supposed to be twenty minutes, but turned in almost two hours.
→ kuroo has lots of photos of kenma in his phone, and him being him caused kenma to have a pic of them as his phone wallpaper.
→ he says he is too lazy to change it, but he actually like it a lot.
→ in one panel of the manga, when hinata and kenma are texting, kenma is shown to have many more texts than hinata, despite him not talking that much to people. and who's the one who always tries to make kenma talk and is literally all the time worried about him?
→ even if he doesn't show it in the most common way - from others’ point of view -, kenma cares about kuroo just how much kuroo cares about him.
→ kenma has always been scared of what people thought about him, but kuroo knows that side of him that he has never showed anyone. their teammates knows that there's nobody as intuitive as he is, but kuroo also knows about what can make him weak and how to handle his emotion.
→ even tho, let's be honest, kuroo is way more a crier than kenma is.
→ when they have movie nights, kenma sometimes picks rom-coms or dramas just to make him cry.
   → but he also lets him express his feelings as much as he can, because he admires that side of kuroo, and wishes he never repress emotions like he tends to do.
→ before important matches, kenma also tends to bicker with lev or yamamoto just for kuroo's entertaining, because he doesn't want him to be too nervous.
→ kuroo thought of a motto to say before matches in his second year.
   → sometimes the first and second years went to the school's gym on sundays to practice on their own, and kenma being their setter made him notice how fast he could adapt to every member, even without talking to them at all.
   → he felt like kenma made silent connections with everyone of them, and it was because of his intelligence and observation skills.
   → but with kenma not being that athletic, he knew the other members needed to compensate.
→ when they were little, kenma always proposed to kuroo new videogames, and he was more than happy to play them, even though he always preferred playing volleyball. 
→ kenma started to notice how kuroo began to lose interest in his games, and at one point he asked his parents if he could buy certain games just because he thought kuroo would like them more. he even made them buy a volleyball game, and kuroo actually enjoyed the thought, but proposed to kenma to play in real life.
→ and finally, at his graduation, kuroo was the student with the highest grades, and being the volleyclub-who-went-to-the-national's captain he had to make a speech in front of the whole school.
   → trying to be funny, he made some science jokes, but nobody except for kai laughed.
→ also, he was so nervous he misspelled so many words, and his dad recorded the whole ceremony. at home, he made tetsurou, kenma, and their respective families watch that and kenma laughed so hard he thought he was gonna suffocate.

'Magic...Magic!' Edward ran a hand through his hair for what seemed like the hundredth time in the last hour alone. He sat on an empty bench in a seemingly empty park with far too much information swimming through his mind. It had only been three days since he last spoke to Severus and that crazy old man Albus. 'Magic, magic school, magical bars, barriers and...'
Edward let out a sigh, he once again ran his left hand through his hair, this time successfully letting it out from his hairband. His hair, now let loose, hung over his shoulders. He rummaged through his dark brown traveling coat, looking for a particular item. With tense shoulders, Edward pulled out a business card.
Said card has been giving Edward a headache, one moment it looked worn and overused while another it looked crispy and fresh as if it was printed just the day before. The only thing that Edward could make out was the words "Leaky Cauldron" along with an address. 'A school that solely focuses on teaching magic that is in need of an Alchemy Professor. If I do agree to this, then I will have access to their library...'
Shaking his head, Edward stood up while picking up his suitcase and heading off in a seemingly random direction. 'Magic and Alchemy...How do they coexist together?'
Many questions popped into Edward's mind that ran along the same line as his first question. How exactly had Magic and Alchemy coexisted together for this long without any consequences? All the teachings he learned throughout the years... it just didn't make any sense. Nothing made sense but at the same time...there was something in the back of his mind that made Edward rethink and think again about everything. Then his blood ran cold. Could it possibly be able to bring back the living from the dead?
That single thought made Edward's final decision for him. It wasn't that he wanted or needed to know, he simply felt that he had to ensure that it was not a possibility.

Snape sat in a corner of a modest-looking room with a glass of amber liquid in his hand. He leaned his head against his other hand as he sat there, deep in thought. It had been three days since he and Dumbledore had last spoken with Edward Elric and had given him a card. Said card was supposed to signal him and the old headmaster if the Alchemy expert would either take or deny the teaching position. If Elric were to deny the position then Snape would have to use a memory charm on him but he had a nagging feeling in the back of his mind that Dumbledore would do something sly to ensure Elric took the job to teach at the school.
There was a part of Snape that didn't want Elric to take up the offer and regretted coming to Dumbledore about Elric's vast knowledge of Alchemy. The last thing he needed was to help Dumbledore in the twisted game of survival in their world. On the other hand, if Elric were to agree then he wouldn't be stuck around with complete dunderheads. Even if Elric did have a temper and still had his childish moments, he was the only one Snape could have an actual intelligent conversation with.
Something clicked in the back of Snape's mind, a signal. "He is agreeing to the position it seems."

Edward stood in front of an abandoned-looking shop, staring at it with a perplexed expression. He had somehow found the address on the card and was now starting to regret his decision. Edward started to wonder if he should punch those idiots for making him look stupid.
“I knew zis vas ein pad idea ." Edward muttered under his breath, he turned away from the shop and faced the street. His eyes widened at who he saw walking towards him, it was Severus, fortunately alone. The last thing Edward needed was that old man being near him, he swore that old geezer gave off a similar vibe to the homunculus King Bradly. "Zefferus..."
"Elric..." Severus responded once he came within hearing distance, he took note of Edward's disheveled appearance. His hair was let loose from its ponytail, his traveling coat looked wrinkled despite the clothes he wore underneath being crisp and groomed. "So, are you agreeing to the teaching position?"
Edward raised his hand to signal Severus to stop talking, he then pulled out a small notebook from his coat. "Der are a couple of dings I need to clear up before I agree."
Severus nodded, he signaled for Edward to follow him towards the run-down shop. With a look of total disbelief, Edward followed him towards the shop, cursing the wizard he was currently following.
Shaking his head, Edward couldn't help but think about his adventures and compare them to what was occurring right now. At least he wasn't at knife or gunpoint...or should it be wand point now...
"Zefferus vat is dis place?" Edward asked as Severus placed a hand on the door to open it.
Severus held back a snarky remark, he couldn't blame the younger man for asking such question. For one, Elric isn't magically aware and two, he didn't want to antagonize him. From the short time they had known each other, the blonde had had a short temper and could clearly hold his own in an argument. "It's the main gate between the Muggle and Wizarding world."
"....Mug...gle..." Edward's eyes widened as he walked through the door to enter a bar filled with the most weirdly dressed people he had ever seen. "How is dis possible?"
"Magic." Severus responded he smirked when he caught Edward glaring at him. "Keep to yourself and do not speak to anyone or mention the fact you are not a wizard."
Edward rolled his eyes, already having an inkling towards what he should say and do...to an extent. "Fine. Are ve getting food? I'm hungry."
Severus rolled his eyes and headed towards the back of the area away from all the other patrons at the bar. In the corner of the room was a not so tall male drinking a colored liquid while holding a tiny umbrella. The tiny man waved towards their direction. "Severus, Albus sent me in his place as he had business to take care of. Is this the new alchemy professor?"
Severus nodded and motioned over towards Edward. "This is Edward Elric." He then motioned over towards his fellow professor. "This is Filius Flitwick, he is a charms master and teaches the subject at Hogwarts."
Edward's brows furrowed, he gave Severus a look that clearly showed confusion as he did not know what exactly charms were. Severus ignored him and signaled for Edward to sit, as he himself sat across from Filius, Edward hesitantly sat at the end of the table away from the wizards. "Hello."
Looking over at Severus, he deadpanned. "Food. You promised food."
Severus' lips twitched before he snorted, he motioned for the owner of the bar to bring them something over. "Would you like to speak now or after we eat?"
"Food."

Edward scoffed his food, not really caring about the magic that was happening around him. All he cared about was the food on his plate and trying to drown out the magic to prevent an upcoming headache. His companions were giving him mixed looks of curiosity and disgust. Again. He didn't really care, he had food on his mind.
Unbeknownst to Edward, the charms professor had already cast a charm over their booth to ensure no one could hear them.
Severus cleared his throat, grabbing Edward's attention, at least somewhat. Edward looked up, food stuck to his face. "Vat?"
With thin lips, Severus wordlessly held out a cloth napkin towards Edward who took it with a 'humph'. Edward wiped the food off of his face. "Dank you."
"How about we start to talk about the position you will be taking in the autumn." Filius asked with a smile.
Edward raised a hand to stop Filius from continuing talking. "I have fev questions dat need to be ansvered before I fully agree along vith changing a couple of dings."
Severus waved a hand for Edward to state what he needed to know and the change of terms.
Edward took out his small notebook from his coat, he skimmed through it until he found the page. "Full access of your library, any and effery resource dis school has."
"You have already been granted access to the restricted portions of the library if that's what you're asking?" Filius responded with a nod.
Edward shook his head, the more detail he attempted to explain with the more his Amestrian accent came through. "No, effery source available to help vith my research to comprehend magic."
Severus and Filius glanced at each other and began to mentally converse. Severus looked away from his fellow professor to give Edward a curt nod in agreement. "What else?"
"How old vould the students I vould be teaching be?"
"They would be at the oldest sixth and seventh years, with O or E in potions and transfiguration." Snape said he let out a sigh of annoyance when he took note of Edward's blank stare. "O stands for Outstanding, the highest grade a student can receive and E stands for Exceeds Expectations, the second highest grade."
"Vat is transfigurazion?" Edward asked, having a feeling he wasn't going to like the answer.
"It's a branch of transformation magic, changing the form and appearance of an object, human... or animal..." Filius trailed off when he took note of Edward's rapidly paling face that quickly snapped into anger. Edward tightly gripped his fork, if he had still had his automail arm then the fork would have been twisted and bent beyond recognition. "Is something the matter?"
Oh yes, that feeling was exactly right.
"...Don't mention dat vord around me for nov." Edward said with a strained voice, his jaw was clenched tightly and his eyes narrowed. He slowly closed his eyes and breathed through his nose in an attempt to regain some composure. "Hov old are zixth and zeffenth years?"
"Between the ages of sixteen to eighteen at most." Filius squeaked out when Edward's eyes snapped open. "Will that be a problem?"
"Too old." Edward responded shaking his head. Leaning back on his chair, Edward crossed his arms over his chest as he thought about it. "I started to learn about alchemy ven I vas about...fiffe or zix...and fully started my training ven I vas nine I dink."
Both teachers gave him a gobsmacked look at this. This was news for both of them.
"S-s-so young." Filius stuttered out. "And your parents allowed you to learn the lost art at such a young age?"
As Filius stated the question, Severus attempted to stop him by giving him a rather odd look, knowing first hand that asking those kinds of questions never ended well, then groaning once the question had finally been asked.
"My shitty father did not care and...alchemy made my mother smile..." Edward trailed off softly. He quickly shook his head, trying to push away the depressing thoughts from his mind. "Back to the main topic...If I start at dat age, all dey will learn is the basics and facts if dey could comprehend the material."
"What do you have in mind?" Severus asked, hoping for an elaboration.
"Many typically start deir training the moment dey apprentice demzelffes to someone who is a fully ledge alchemist, age varies." Edward explained to them. "Two other people I know are alchemist, one of dem started his training when he was in his early teens and the other..." Edward attempted to repress a shudder that threatened to come out. "His alchemy been based down in his family for generations and generations."
Shaking his head in an attempt to repress certain memories, Edward continued. "Vat ve needed to knov is the basic science and understanding behind everything. Understanding of the vorld and its...rules...Den and only den doze who understand vill truly learn hov to use alchemy."
"And those who do not fully understand?" Filius asked
"Ah, dat brings up to my other question." Edward flipped through the pages of his notebook. "Vill I be allowed to kick out students from my class? Dere vill be a punch of dem dat are not going to comprehend alchemy and I do not vant to vaste my time on dem."
"Well...er..." Filius looked over at Severus for some help on that question. Typically, it would be the student that would leave the class,not the teacher kicking out the student. Seeing as he wasn't getting any help he attempted to answer. "How would you know this?"
"My teacher sent my brother and I to an island vith just a knife, the clothes on our backs and a riddle to solve." Edward drawled out, thememory ingrained in the back of his mind. "No food, no vater, just a knife and a riddle to solve all on our own... at least ven ve vere not being chased around by a so-called lunatic and hungry volffes. For a whole month."
"You have a brother?" Severus asked blankly.
"Did I not tell you dat already? No? Eh, must have passed my mind." Edward laughed nervously, in actuality he may have purposely left his brother out from all of their conversations. The reason he had brought Alphonse was to let the two professors know it was a team effort. It had taken both brothers to figure out the riddle. "Ve had one month to figure it out, if ve did not ansver right den teacher vould not have taught us alchemy."
"What was the riddle?"
"One is all, all is one."

Edward carried his suitcase over his shoulder, walking alongside Severus kept a blank expression.
"Is there anything else you wanted to ask?" Severus asked Edward quietly, his lips barely moving as he spoke.
Edward stopped walking, he looked up at the darkening sky. "I do not understand hov magic is able to hide for dis long from my country? If alchemy is conzidered to be...magic...den hov is it able to be shown freely at Amestris but magic is only shown in its own vorld."
Severus stopped walking too and looked over at Edward with an eyebrow raised. "You hardly spoke about your home country."
"It is militaristic. The military is the one dat is running the show, if dey knew about magic den dey vould have used it to vin all its vars." Edward responded grimly at the notion. "Seeing as no magical users vere in the government den magic is not practice dere."
"How would you know that?"
"Because I am stuck in the military dat is compromised of the government." Edward snapped not liking the fact that this was still the case. Even though he may no longer do alchemy, he was still part of the military. The only reason he was taking a year off was that he was driving everyone stir crazy and had gained the title 'Hero of the People'. The second point being included since Edward had used it against his superior. "Even vith Alchemy, it still did not sustained deir dirst of power...Just imagine if dey had magic on deir side..."
Edward could not imagine how different things would have been if magic had come into play. Would it have saved lives or taken more in the process? Could it have helped those Edward couldn't save...
He shook his head, trying to erase the melancholy thoughts from his head, the last thing Edward needed was to relive the past. What's done is done. Nothing was going to change that.
"...We have a theory about that." Severus broke the tense silence that followed after Edward's burst.
"Zo do I. If I told you vat it was den I vould most likely get in serious trouble vith said government." Edward responded with a dry chuckle, his eyes showing mischief as he spoke. "Dat is a story for another day."
Severus debated if he was telling the truth or not, seeing as he couldn't get into Edward's mind to figure it out. "Hn. Where will you be staying for the remainder of the month? Classes start on the first of September."
"Have been staying at a small hodel the last couple of days. It is right across from dat café." Edward responded, turning around and heading towards his destination. "I vill be spending the rest of my time taking into account vat exactly I vould be teaching."

"He agreed to the position as long as we keep to his terms." Snape said, leaning against a wall in Dumbledore's office. He glanced over at the old headmaster skimming through the contract that had been created for Elric to sign to finalize him becoming a professor along with the modified terms of an agreement. By the looks of it, the gray-haired wizard wasn't fully reading the contract. All he wanted was an alchemy professor and didn't particularly care how he got it. "He is opening the class to all years, only requiring the understanding of muggle science. Which he himself would provide to an extent, along with other information needed for this class."
"Is that so..." Dumbledore trailed off, peering down at one of the pages of the contract. "Did he mention what materials he would be requiring for his class?"
"Muggle pens, pencils, spiral notebooks and a periodic table." Snape said remembering the list. "We are going to have to provide most if not all of these materials as most will have difficulty... acquiring them."
"Textbooks?"
"He will be providing his own." Snape responded offhandedly. "He didn't like any of the textbooks that are currently written; he said they are not up to his par."
Without much thought, Dumbledore signed the contract; the moment his pen lifted from the page the stack of papers sprung up and folded itself into an envelope. Dumbledore picked up the envelope and held it in Snapes direction. Snape pushed himself off of the wall towards Dumbledore and took the envelope from him. Tucking the item in his robes, Snape headed towards the fireplace.
"One more thing before you go..." Dumbledore took out a pouch from his desk. "This will cover any magical supplies Elric requires. You will help him, yes?"
Snape huffed under his breath, he could already feel the upcoming headaches. He wouldn't be surprised if Elric questioned his ear off during the trip. "Anything else before I go...?"
"That is all."

Dear Brother...
Edward stared down at the barely written letter, twirling the pen in his hand. Nothing was coming to mind on what he wanted to write down but at the same time he had so much he needed to say. The problem was that if the things he wanted to say were to be intercepted or end up in the wrong hands there would be more trouble than the both of them could handle. It wasn't just that he wanted to talk to someone about his current situation, Edward also needed to contact Alphonse about several books and notes he would need to teach.
Fully knowing that Alphonse was nowhere near where said books and notes were, the younger Elric could easily send a letter to someone (most likely Granny or Winry, or if worst comes to worst then the bastard colonel, excuse him, General Mustang) for them to send said items. The main problem being a way to make sure his letters would not be intercepted by the wrong people.
"This is harder than I thought it would be." Edward's grip slackened, dropping his pen he pushed away from the desk he was using. Standing up he began pacing around the hotel room he was renting for the remainder of the month. It was a modest room, a single bed, a small desk, a night stand, a single chair and a dresser. There was also a closet and a small bathroom. The only thing that Edward liked about the hotel was that it was close to the café and bookstore. "This place is driving me crazy. It's too quiet!"
Shaking his head, Edward sat back down on the solitary chair in the small room and stared down at the barely written letter. He tapped his fingers on the table in an attempt to think of something. Picking up the pen with his right hand Edward began to write, the words having seemingly no correlation with his current situation. Countryside? Ships? Automobiles and the busy streets of London? It may have not made sense to just anyone, but to the people the letter was intended for it would be clear enough for them to crack the code and find the underlying meaning.
Edward stretched his writing arm out an in attempt to loosen the tightened joints, still having some trouble writing with the arm again. He was about to finish the letter when a curt knock broke his trance. With narrowed eyes, Edward silently headed towards the door, prepared for the worst. Looking through the peephole, his tension was swept away. It was Severus. Opening the door, Edward motioned for the wizard to come in.
"Vat did your boss dink of the contract?" Edward asked once he had closed the door. He turned around to see Severus taking a sealed envelope out of his robe.
"This is your contract, as promised, here's the physical form." Severus responded handing Edward the envelope.
Edward smugly regarded the envelope, then quickly placed it on his desk. "Danks."
"And this..." Severus said as he took out a pouch from a concealed pocket in his robe, handing it to Edward as well. "Will help cover for any materials you will need at Diagon Alley."
"Dat is the magical shopping blace right?"
"Yes."

Granada!  It’s so Moorish (boom boom...Kill me Now)

Long before I got back into climbing, I booked a holiday with the fam along with Andy & Elaine (from the Brecon Beacons fastpacking trip) and their children Esmé (9) & James (5 months).  We booked an Airbnb to Otura at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains near Granada in Spain.  It turned out to be an absolute gold mine of amazing climbing routes and hiking.  Kerching!
I bought a couple of local climbing guides (I’d particularly recommend the Andalusia - Guia de Escalada Deportiva (if you want it please click on the link and buy it so I get a bit of cash from Amazon too!) and spoke to a local guide called Nino from the amazing Club Cabraloca (the appropriately named crazy goat when translated - Seriously, if you want to climb in Granada hit him up, he’s an absolute legend and they do everything through canyoning, via ferrata to diving or caving).  We chatted by email in the run up to the holiday - Nino doesn’t speak English so it was a great opportunity to practice my Spanish (I’m terrible at languages but I’ve been trying to relearn since before our last trip to Barcelona with Andy and Elaine - I’m rubbish but getting there).

I explained to Nino that there would be 4 adults (who apart from Sammy, climb regularly indoors, along with me having done a bit of rock climbing as a kid), Lenora (age 7 - an absolute beast), Esmé (9 - who has done a bit of bouldering indoors), Autumn (3 - who has done a bit of bouldering indoors but mainly will be climbing for our entertainment *please don’t call social services) and James (4 months, who most likely won’t be up for climbing but we would see how he feels on the day).
We wanted to climbs somewhere (in order of importance) 1 - That was in the shade (It’s brutally hot in Granada in August), 2 - (that had grades between 4-7 in the same spot so that everyone could have a challenge) and 3 - My Spanish isn’t particularly good so would he have someone that spoke English (I’m happy ordering a few beers or chatting conversationally, but don’t want to die because of getting a verb mixed up).  Nino was all over it and reassured me all would be taken care of.
For anyone that hasn’t been, I can’t recommend Granada enough.  It’s a small city that isn’t very busy (coming from London that’s a massive plus), there’s very little traffic, you’re right on the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range (which has Mulhacen, the highest mountain in Western Europe outside the alps as well as the most Southern ski resort) and some ace beaches (the lesser known Costa Tropical) which don’t suffer the hordes of people and Brits that other coasts nearby do.  Plus the Alhambra, Nasrid Palace & Generalife Gardens are truly spectacular.

We spent a few days checking out the area, visiting the tourist spots, going to the beach, lounging around our pool and BBQing (with some drinking thrown in too), but also scoped out some climbing routes on a hike too.  For those not in the know, Los Cahorros is a fantastic trail of rope bridges, rivers and stunning views through a gorge and mountainsides.  It’s also famous for having some incredible climbing routes, so we had a good old hike around to check it out.

It’s always a good idea to set off early when the days get so hot so we did most of our hiking in the morning to head home at around 2.  The hike is really fun and family friendly with plenty of access to mountain run off water (I always bring my Sawyer Filter with me wherever I go where I might run out of water, despite the several litres of frozen water we had with us, as it’s ace just to fill up whenever you need.  Super handy, very light, connects to a regular bottle and lasts forever. link on image below).
Los Cahorros only has about 300m of elevation across the hike so is family friendly whilst being hard enough work when Elaine was carrying James and I was mainly carrying Autumn.

Anyway...it’s really cool with a load of rope bridges, stunning scenery, great access to water, lots of shade & amazing climbing routes.  Do it.

Next up on the list was hooking up with Nino.  Unfortunately Antonio, Nino’s buddy and translator couldn’t make the Thursday so we rescheduled for Friday.  No biggie, as we had a lazy day by the pool but come Friday we were all super hyped to get on some rock.  
We met Nino in the Lidl car park near the main Decathlon (I love Decathlon) and had a good laugh about my obscene amount of emails I had sent Nino.  He had been very patient and was just as nice in person as he was on email.  His mate Antonio would be our translator as Nino’s English was similar to my Spanish, and Antonio came with the added bonus of his dog who was epic.  She was a jet black Belgian shepherd and the kids were super hyped as they were missing Ripley (our Sproodle).
After a quick drive to Alfacar (there are loads of routes within a very short drive of Granada) we found our wall.  After a pretty steep hike up the hill through some trees (I was a little worried about Elaine as she had James strapped to her chest, but she’s an absolute machine and didn’t seem phased at all) we got to a really nice and shady ledge below our climbing spot.

After setting up, Nino asked who wanted to go first - before he’d even had the chance to finish the sentence, Lenora was up and putting on a harness whilst simultaneously saying ‘I will’ in a manner that suggested this wasn’t up for discussion.  Within minutes, she had blasted her way up the first route (route 8 of el Sector del Esconchón in the Guia de Escalada en Alfacar Granada, if you’re interested) and cockily confirmed that it was easy.

Esmé and Autumn found it a bit trickier and only made it half way up, but Esmé doesn’t climb as much and Autumn is only 3.  To give her credit, she got a good 8 metres up and it’s her first time climbing outdoors.  We all had a good laugh when Autumn rolled over onto her back, hanging from the rope and started shouting “I can’t roll over!  I can’t roll over!”.  Please don’t call social services.

I normally belay with a Black Diamond ATC Guide (linked to Amazon) but Antonio got me on a Grigri+ for the first time and it felt a bit odd to use.  Paying out the rope was a little more tricky but I appreciated the extra safety feature knowing that it auto locks if someone is belaying me and not paying attention (having 4 kids with us, that’s quite possible too).  I’m still in two minds about which I prefer to use, but then redundancy is key in climbing and the GriGri definitely offers a greater level of safety.

Sammy had a good old crack at the route and managed to top out, but freaked a bit when she saw the view.  It’s a bit different to an indoor wall, when you’re already 1350m up, the 30m feels a lot higher.

Nino and Antonio started planning out the more challenging routes once they’d gauged our abilities on the warm up route.  They put up a harder route (route 5) which Elaine and Andy promptly powered through, followed by me.  It was a challenging route (a V+ in the local grades, which according to the guidebook and the UKC website which have a conversion chart shows the local grades being two lower than normal French grades, so this would have been a 6a+ apparently).

Not one to be outdone, Lenora got tied in and had a shot at the harder route.  I wasn’t sure how far up she’d get as it wasn’t particularly easy and she’s still only small.  Of course, she flipped the beast mode switch and absolutely crushed it.

She never fails to amaze me.  Big L went up the wall like a rat up a drain pipe & both our guides were super impressed by how brave she was.  Putting in all those hours at YonderE17 and the Arch obviously paid off.  Things were going really well until Lenora reached up into hold (in the side of the big rock in the picture above and got a nasty surprise.

There was a really spiky bush in the rock which Lenora put her hand right in to, so the pain combined with a sudden realisation that she was super high up freaked her out.  She wanted to come down right away, but was pretty gripped so lost her concentration.  Usually at the Reach and Castle climbing centres (which I think are about 15 metres) she loves abseiling down, with whoops of joy and wild/possibly real claims that she’s a ninja/special forces etc.  Things were a bit different here, with the wall not being as flat as in a climbing centre what with overhangs and the risk of other spiky plants.  It all got a bit much for her but we finally got her down.  Nino was great and climbed over to her, got her to relax a bit and then things were fine.

Meanwhile, Antonio had set up a much harder route (route 2 in the guide) along with changing the first easy route over a few metres into a similarly hard route (route 7).  Elaine had a crack at the hardest route and despite having the background noise of a crying 5 month old baby James being held by Andy, a mildly hysteric Lenora, along with Autumn and Esmé arguing over who was more of a unicorn, managed to focus and get on with it.

After Elaine got down, the kids were getting a bit grumpy so I helped Elaine and Sammy get them all back to the comfort of the air con in the cars (and iPads) so that Andy and I could have a crack at the last routes before helping Nino and Antonio Pack up.

All in all it was a great day.  I thoroughly enjoyed the routes - the final two routes were the most challenging and in very different ways, but I think we could have pushed it up a grade looking back even.  The view over Granada was spectacular and the size of the mountains is really humbling.  To give context, Alfacar (a low to medium size mountain) from where we parked the car, was starting at around 1300m, which is roughly the height of Ben Nevis (the highest peak in the UK at 1345m) with the peak topping out at around 1400m.  
I’d love to get back to the area again for more exploration - apparently Autumn is ideal as it’s still nice and warm, but not so punishingly hot.  This opens up a number of walls that don’t have shade at the bottom, so that would be nice.
All in all, I can thoroughly recommend Granada and if you get the chance to go, make sure you hit up Nino at Club Cabraloca to save you lugging a ton of kit over whilst getting the benefit of a super experienced local guide.

how my first year of IB was not a struggle for me (MASTERPOST).
“ib is impossible” is a phrase that i have constantly heard throughout this year. i finished my first year of IB one month ago, and i honestly can’t agree with that phrase anymore. throughout the year, i looked for any advice on how to survive this program on the internet, and i was happy to find it on tumblr. because of this, i decided that it would be a good idea to be a helping hand for any of you who is thinking about choosing IB, or will be in it next year, is struggling with it, or simply because this may help you get decent/good grades (mainly B’s and A’s). 
introduction
before beginning this masterpost, i want to list the subjects that i chose, my grades overall in each subject, and what i mean by “struggle”. (note: grades we get where i live vary from 1 to 10)
G1 English Literature HL- 9,33 (avg 3 trimesters)
G2: Spanish Language and Literature SL- 9,33
G3: History HL- 8,33
G4: Environmental Systems and Societies SL- 9
G5: Mathematics SL- 8,33
G6: Visual Arts HL- 10
TOK- 9
overall grade (+ other non-IB subjects): 9.1
*IB is not easy. nevertheless, it was not a struggle because i did not find it impossible either. i also think that with effort and dedication anybody can do IB. i may not have gotten the best grades but i am definitely satisfied with my work this year, and enjoyed the program. as i haven’t finished IB i cannot give an overall conclusion on it and therefore i will be focusing on the first year only.*
how i chose each one of my subjects and my experience overall + advice
choosing my subjects at the end of 2016 took a lot of time. it is important to understand that you DO NOT have to choose your subjects based on its difficulty level or because your friends choose them. choose wisely because you will be dealing with them for 2 whole years. choose your subjects out of interest; think about what you are passionate about and what you are interested in learning vs what you are not. if you have career choices in mind, you can definitely choose subjects that IB which are based on them, but it is not compulsory to do so. i advice you to read the syllabus of the subjects you find interesting. 
English Literature HL
you will be reading 90% of the time
write down notes and highlight anything that will be useful for analysis while you are reading. 
please plan your essays before beginning to write, the structure may be confusing at first (history kids: a history essay structure is NOT the same as the english one).
a CLEAR THESIS STATEMENT IN THE INTRODUCTION!!!
learn literary devices before your exam, i definitely regret not having done this. 
take your time to do your Written Assignment, don’t leave it for the last minute. i started my WA one week before and definitely felt less stressed as we approached the deadline. make sure you have enough analysis to write aprox 1200-1500 words. 
consult your teacher for anything, it is important that you know the instructions for what you are doing. 
write as much as you can in your supervised writing. you will need this for your written assignment. don’t stress too much though, this is not graded.
reflective statement: remember, you need to have the question “how was your understanding of cultural and contextual considerations of the work developed through the interactive oral?” in mind all the time. 
for your individual oral presentation: be as creative as possible, try to get the audience’s attention because it will raise your score, and breathe because i definitely understand that standing in front of a whole class can make you nervous. you will be speaking for 10 minutes so be sure to have enough content (and not too much) so you can reach this time. i personally used a power-point presentation but you can use anything that will be useful to project your ideas. my nerves definitely were my weakness but i was still able to reach the 6-7 band (IB).
read the markscheme before handing in any ib assignment. you can find them in the IB site. 
 i would choose this subject again if i had to start the program from zero. not only i enjoy reading but the workload is not heavy at all. if english is not your strength, i advise you to choose it in standard level.

spanish is my first language so if you are doing your first language in standard level, it won’t be that much of a problem. 
 it was not hard to get good grades, remember to do everything in time and follow the instructions!
you will need complex vocabulary, especially for paper 1 and know your literary devices. 
highlight and take down notes of any analysis in the works you read, because you will need them for your exams.
be organized when writing essays. remember to plan first. 
for paper 2, re-read your literary works during holidays so you won’t have to read it during the year and waste time, i promise you that your future self will pat you in the back :)

History HL
history is hard. this subject was probably the toughest one for me, but it is my favorite, and i have definitely progressed throughout the year. it is important that you learn how to deal with failure because it will happen, but pay attention to your teacher’s corrections and you will improve so much. (feel free to ask me for notes on cold war, US civil rights...)
evidence. if you don’t put any evidence in your essays, you will fail.
if is is a paper 2, always have the question in mind, don’t move away from it. also, know the topics you have covered so you know the topic number in the exam and you won’t mess up.
know the structure of the essays: introduction (context, defining key terms in the question, presenting question and arguments for and against), main body (one paragraph for arguments for and one paragraph for arguments against + small conclusion at the end of each), conclusion (side with the argument for or the argument against, don’t try to make a balance).
for paper 1: always use your own knowledge as well!!!!
your history book clearly indicates what the IB wants you to answer in each question, so check that out before any of your exams and make even more use of it.
make notes during the year, don’t leave them for finals. it is a lot of content that you need to cover and you cannot do this one week before.
learn the significance of any events, this is important for argumentation.
never use the word “things”. 
learn conjunctive words/phrases! (ex: on the one hand, nevertheless, moreover, in addition...) they will come in very handy when writing. 
practicing questions and skills is always more important than knowing the content. use the mark-scheme!
an IB examiner does not care about your opinion, don’t put it.
gaining time management is so important.
i haven’t started my IA yet, but as history is difficult, it would be good to aim for the highest IA mark as its 20% IB history score.
highlight and take notes in your history books. do a “mini-summary” per paragraph.
skype calls with your friends are actually helpful. what helped me the most for finals was doing a shared document and taking down notes in a table format.

putting the memes to a side, this subject has honestly been fun. as somebody who is not into science, choosing ESS was great and made my IB experience better. moreover, it actually interested me and i feel as if i have gained a lot of knowledge. this subject was definitely not difficult, but it is important to study and understand basic concepts. 
case studies: i did not know this until last minute, but in your essay you must use evidence, which are case studies, to answer the questions. therefore, i advice you to learn as many as you can. 
the essay doesn’t have to be too long: 500 words is okay. (follow the mark-scheme too)
know ESS terminology. have good vocabulary. 
make notes before finals, please!
remember that logic is more important than memory. 
make flash cards when learning vocabulary
understand what you need to answer by the type of question (outline, explain, suggest...). it is important to do this so you don’t lose points.
time management.
there are not many past papers as this subject is new, i advice you to use the exercises at the end of every chapter.
use the knowledge and understanding boxes at the beginning of each chapter, they are so helpful and are useful for summarizing. 
pay attention in class, some concepts may be difficult to understand at first.

Mathematics SL
when choosing this subject, i knew that maths was not my strength nor my weakness and therefore standard level would be the best for me. i was never into maths throughout high school until IB; i was able to be interested in it. many of my friends struggled in standard level but most of them were able to pass the subject. maths sl is not easy and therefore a lot of dedication is needed. 
even though it may seem obvious, you need to pay attention in class because the basic concepts are the hardest to understand. 
do all of the exercises possible in your book. note: the short exercises in each chapter are only for gaining a basic idea of a certain topic. when studying for a test, do the mixed examination practice at the end of each chapter. 
past papers. not only many of the exams you will take will have these exercises but you need to comprehend what the IB is expecting you to know. 
read the summary at the end of each chapter, i honestly think that it is helpful. 
ask your teacher everything. it is not the same thing to ask questions in class than after class when you can understand better. 
do your homework, even if it’s tiring. 
i advice you to study for tests at least with one week of anticipation, ir may seem excessive but pulling an all-nighter or only studying two days before will not help you pass.
for your IA: it may be hard to think about a topic, i will put some links below for you to get ideas. follow the instructions, and be creative. don’t leave it for last minute. 
i have several revision worksheets that my teacher gave me, if you send me a message i’ll try to share them with you. 
learn how to use your calculator properly, there are many tricks and tips that you can learn so you earn time. 
know the formulas, but remember that you can find most of them in your formula booklet.

you will procrastinate a lot, at least in my first year. remember that you will have to do around 11 works. 
a lot of brainstorm is required
have a theme in mind. all of your works must be connected somehow. 
be realistic, you may have ideas that can be impossible.
try to experiment different art techniques throughout your first year; you may find your strengths and weaknesses and preferences. 
don’t give up in your first try, the IB wants you to make mistakes and for you to improve in them. (your mistakes must go to your process portfolio)
use your time wisely, do not make the mistake of procrastinating as me. 
ask you teacher for any type of help
remember that you can also do your portfolio digitally. at first i opposed to this but in the end it seemed so much easier to do it in computer. 
take pictures of everything you do. you will need them. 
remember to put a reflection/argumentation of your overall work and experience/process at the end. 
for your comparative study, i advice you to start it as early as possible and choose works that haven’t been as analyzed as much. (i will link down below a great example of a comparative study)

doing the SAT and the IB at the same time may seem stressing. i recommend you to use Khan Academy for practice because it is not only free, but it is just as good as paid websites for sat practice. i recommend you also to do at least 2 hours of sat per week so you don’t lose your practice. it can definitely be stressing but with good organization you can do anything!

i don’t see my studyblr as a task, i honestly use it for motivation and to motivate others, which makes me happy. having a studyblr and doing the ib is not stressing at all, so if you are wondering about doing one i definitely recommend you to do it. (obviously, don’t dedicate 24 hours on it)

and of course, the memes. i found memes a great way to share relatable moments with my friends and whenever you are stressing out or procrastinating, you can find a bunch of memes in instagram, i personally like @smartibapp.

coucou! for those of you who’d like to better understand the french language , settle right in. i hope this post helps. let me know if you want more of these - i’m thinking of doing a music playlist (french exclusive).  disclaimer: this is from an american point of view. just my personal opinion.
the academic system - how are french exams marked? all exams are in essay format where the elegance of literary expression, proofs, and argumentative reasoning are subjectively marked. multiple choice tests are rarely used.
france employs a twenty-point grading scale which means:
all marks earned over the course of lycée éducation and the baccalaureate exams are calculated out of twenty.
a score of 20 / 20 is considered to be perfection, and as perfection is humanly unattainable: 
such grades are extraordinary and nearly impossible to earn.
it’s possible to earn perfection in subjects like the hard sciences: bio, chem, and math : but you’ve got to be nothing short of amazing. 
as my french professor said: 
“a 20 / 20 is reserved for god, and you’re not god.”
“a 19 / 20 is reserved for the professor and you’re not the professor.”
a 10 / 20 is considered mediocore or average: however, it does not equate to a 50%.
the french baccalauréat or the f i n a l e x a m is based solely on the final grade average – 
which is weighted by the coefficients. 
with a final grade average of 10/20 or more, the diploma is awarded; with a grade average of more than 10/20, an additional mention (level of distinction) is given: assez bien (12/20), bien (14/20), très bien (16/20).

i’m losing my mind
i’m always losing my mind actually. 
i’m not even playing soccer AT ALL this week. completely skipped it. 
and i have this chemistry exam on Saturday fucking morning and no time to prepare for it. 
I spent all afternoon yesterday catching up on OTHER studies that i also have to do this week, and finishing my chapter 4 chemistry homework (which took me 3 hours to complete 10 problems, as usual, fuck my life)
and i have classes all day and work immediately after. i’m not done until at LEAST 9pm. That gives me 3 hours to study and still get 6 hours of sleep. i’m supposed to be getting 9 hours of sleep. and i maximize at 6. 
the job teaching taekwondo and soccer, i can’t ever request off because i’m the only one who does the job. there is no one to cover for me. So i asked in the group chat for my sandwich shop if someone was able to cover for me. I just ASKED.
and my boss privately messages me saying “kaela, you should know that you probably can’t get a cover because it’s exams week”
and i’m like uh...no...exam week doesn’t start officially until the 19th. I’m just taking this stupid fucking chemistry class that has 3 exams instead of 2, so i happen to have an exam before everyone else. 
and he’s like “uh, well, you know that everyone else also has to manage their homework and group projects.” 
YEAH. I know that. I was just ASKING if someone could cover for me. I wasn’t saying, “hey someone cover for me i’m not coming in today because i have too much other work to do”....it doesn’t hurt to ask, and its more hours for someone else. What’s the harm in that?
“uh well you should plan to have your shift covered in advance, not ask on the same day you work.”
I get that. I do. And usually I do that. unless i’m sick and dying. my boss doesn’t know i have lupus. he wouldn’t get it if i tried to explain it to him too. i’m not trying to play the victim here but i have a lot of other shit i have to worry about than most students. I can’t just freely sacrifice my health like everyone else without potentially serious consequences. Honestly, no student should have to sacrifice their health at all, but society sucks. 
and secondly, only 4 out of the 7 kitchen staff we have are students. The others are just working holiday. They might have other jobs too but like, it’s not like everyone is suffering all at once. And none of the other students also has THREE JOBS on top of their course load. only the one job. I cover for people when I can to help them out. Not so much this semester because of my limited schedule...but when I can. 
but then he says to me “we need to talk after work about your schedule.” 
what the actual fuck. is he going to fire me? he let go other people who couldn’t work more than 10 hours a week...and i work 9.5! and because of my classes and other jobs, and the fact that the shop isn’t open on sundays...i can’t change my schedule in any other way, and he knows that. so i’m certain he’s not going to try to change it but i terrified that he’s going to fire me. 
so i skipped class today, despite having mandatory attendance...so i could study a bit, under the assumption that no one could cover for me and i would have to work anyways.
and i spent the entire hour panicking about what the fuck he meant by “we need to talk.” 
because i seriously CANNOT afford to lose this job. and i don’t have time to look for another one. i got freaked out and told him that he needs to accept that i’m a student first and i care about my GPA more than work, and would starve for a week for not having enough money if it means i can get a good grade. I shouldn’t have said that. but he should understand. like he was a student in our uni too, only less than 10 years ago. he’s lived abroad before. he knows what it’s like. what the fuck. 
i have team projects and homework too. in fact, two of my projects this year aren’t so easy to finish, where we just make a group chat, meet once, decide the topic/how to divide the work and then just do it. One of them we’re conducting a full-fledged experiment with the professor’s graduate students and we have to present it in front of some national psychology colloquium. our group has to meet with the grad student every week, at least once. for more than just a mere hour too. The only time everyone is available? 9am on friday. when most of my group doesn’t even have class that day, and the ones that live far from campus have to come to school by 9am. all because of fucking ME. 
my other group? they seem happy to just exclude me even though i want to be apart of the project as much as possible. this is my class that’s in Korean and they always just ignore my suggestions and ideas and go with what they want even though i know it’s not right but i just suck at expressing what i want for such difficult concepts in Korean so my ideas sound stupid or don’t make sense. They also have no experience doing research projects...but i do...so they think they are doing things right but they aren’t and i don’t know how to explain it because i’m not the team captain. 
my other 3 groups, i’m the oldest and therefore the team captain and they are all lazy idiots who don’t want to collaborate at all and don’t do anything unless i initiate.
plus i’m constantly having to check my messages because i have to translate the stuff for my soccer team into English for the other foreigners on the team, as soon as the message comes up. 
my hair is falling out and i have sores on my head from scratching (i have an awful nervous habit of skin picking and my head and eyebrows are the first to get destroyed) 
i wish i could stop working and just be a damn student. there is a scholarship for 1:1 language exchange and pays 500,000won at the end of the semester... but the students have to meet 2 hours twice a week and submit a report every week in person by a specific date. I don’t have time for that, i would have to sacrifice studying or more sleep for that. 
i haven’t even been going to the gym so i’m stressed about how much weight i will gain and how weak i will get and i feel so stifled that i want to run to just blow it all off... but ain’t nobody got time for that either! 
I”M FREAKING OUT BECAUSE I SUCK AT CHEMISTRY.
there is no way i can get an A on this exam. literally.
professor told us today that the AVERAGE is 50%. FIFTY FUCKING PERCENT
20 questions in 1.5 hours...and most students can’t even finish, and all fail.
so they ones who get above the average get an “A’ on a curve...but that doesn’t mean they are actually A students who understand the material really well and are really good at studying. It just means they failed not as badly as everyone else. it’s fucking bullshit. 
i don’t know why, if for the past several years that how they do it and just expect all students to fail and not a single one gets even a legit C on the exams...why they don’t just make it a little easier? it’s GENERAL CHEMISTRY for chrissake...there are more advanced courses to come later for those who need them. I can’t understand the concept of curved grading AT ALL. 
there is nothing amazing or special about being a kinesthetic learner.
it just means that i’m inefficient and stupid at everything 
i hate this. i’m so fucking stupid. why did i even THINK that i had a chance at doing well this semester? i’ve failed all 3 of my quizzes so far...i did the math...the highest possible grade i can get is a B, and that’s ONLY if I ace every quiz, get perfect scores on all upcoming homeworks, and ace all 3 of my exams. Which is impossible. 
i hate everything right now and i feel completely helpless and stupid all the time. Like i can’t even speak Korean properly most days.
i’m literally getting dumber by the day the more i try to stuff more crap into my brain the dumber i get.

Off-topic side note before we start: Colin, one of our blog members, can’t post today, so I (Leora) decided to post something in his place.
The Netherlands has a school system, and it’s a bit different than normal schools. I’ll try to explain it, but English is not my first language, so here’s a spelling/grammar warning in advance. Enjoy! 😄
Peuterspeelzaal - Pre-school (Literally: toddler play room) - Grade 0 This is optional. Kids learn social skills and there are all sorts of toys children can play with. You can start going here if you’re 2 years old.
Basisschool - Primary school (Literally: basicschool) - Grade 1-6 In this school you’ll learn the basics. It’s actually not that hard, most schools will not give you much homework. The most I got was in group 8, and that was just two pages. In ‘basisschool’, grades are called “groups” (”groepen”).
- Group 1 & 2, age 4-6, grade 0: This is kindergarten 😋 - Group 3, age 6-7, grade 1: This is where you’ll learn how to read & write, you’ll also start doing math. - Group 4, age 7-8, grade 2: Grammar, spelling and multiplying. - Group 5, age 8-9, grade 3: It’s time for history and geography! Everything is getting harder: longer sentences, more difficult math problems, plus, grammar is more important. - Group 6, age 9-10, grade 4: It’s time for essays, and you’ll have to know the Dutch provinces. - Group 7, age 10-11, grade 5: -sarcastic voice- yaaay, homework.. It’s time for learning about the countries of Europe! Also, more essays. Most schools start teaching English in group 7 - Group 8, age 11-12, grade 6: Doing more assignments in less time 😥 Children learn about countries all over the world, they do essays and they have to do more homework. (It’s still not that much.) Almost every kid in group 8 learns how to speak English. Also, group-eighters do a musical at the end of the year, to say goodbye to the school.
Middelbare school - High school (Literally: middle school) - Grade 7-12 From now on, grades are called classes, not groups. There are four categories, you could say it’s based on smartness, but that’s not true. It’s also about having stamina (is that the correct word here?), wanting to learn and really ‘getting’ things. Also, if you have a VMBO diploma, you can join HAVO, class 4. Same with HAVO, if you have a HAVO diploma, you can join VWO, class 5. (Well, you can’t just jump in, there are a few requirements, but it’s definitely possible!)
VWO This is the highest level. VWO-students are here for 6 years (grade 7-12). VWO has two smaller groups: Atheneum and Gymnasium. The only difference is, in gymnasium, you’ll get two extra languages: Latin and Old Greek.
HAVO I'd say this is where the average student goes, or perhaps a little above average (?). HAVO-students are here for 5 years (grade 7-11). The stuff they learn in HAVO is less difficult than in VWO
VMBO If it’s difficult for you to really ‘get’ things and to learn, then I recommend this place. It’s less difficult than HAVO & VWO. Sometimes VWO-students practice a language, like French, with old VMBO exam tests. VMBO-students are here for 4 years (grade 7-10).
Choosing a profile If you’re one of the cool and big kids, then you can choose a 'vakkenpakket’! (Literally translated: subject package. A better translation is a study program, or a chosen set of courses.)
HAVO and VWO vakkenpakketten, choosable for class 4: - Natuur & Techniek (Literally: Nature & Technique) If you want a tech-ey job, then you’ll want to choose this package. - Natuur & Gezondheid (Literally: Nature & Health) Most people wanting to be a doctor choose this package. - Economie & Maatschappij (Literally: Economy & Society) This is for real business people. You’ll learn all about money. - Cultuur & Maatschappij (Literally: Culture & Society) People choose this one if they want to do something with art or with languages.
VMBO vakkenpakketten, choosable for class 3 (<- not 100% sure): - Sector Techniek - Sector Technique This is a practical package, similar to “Natuur & Techniek” - Sector Zorg en welzijn - Sector Care and welfare There isn’t much information about this available online, but it’s safe to say this package is working with people. It’s a little similar to “Natuur & Gezondheid” - Sector Economie - Sector Economy Similar to “Economie & Maatschappij”. It’s for business people, but also for people who want to work with tourists. - Sector Landbouw - Sector Agriculture If your parents have their own farm, they probably want you to be the next owner. This sector will prepare you for that. Nature lovers will also fit in.
Vervolgonderwijs (Literally: continue education) You can split this up in two sides: ‘middelbaar beroepsonderwijs’ (literally: middle jobeducation) and ‘hoger onderwijs’ (literally: higher education). You can get in ‘middelbaar beroepsonderwijs’ with a VMBO, HAVO or VWO diploma and you can only get in ‘hoger onderwijs’ with a HAVO or VWO diploma.
Middelbaar onderwijs (mbo) This will directly prepare you for a job. There are four levels, and depending on what level, it’ll take 1-4 years.
Hoger onderwijs (hbo or wo) Another split-up! One is ‘hoger beroepsonderwijs’ (hbo), this will take 4 years and you’ll be prepared for a job. The other one is ‘universitaire opleiding’ (literally: university education/training (?)), you can do bachelor (for about 3 years) and then you can choose to do master on top of it (one or two years extra). You can only do this type of education with a VWO diploma.
Some courses will take a little longer, because they’re more advanced. For example, being a surgeon takes a way longer to learn.
So yeah, I think that’s about it! There’s more though, this is just the general idea, but I think this post is long enough already.

15 Reasons Why You Should Get TEFL Certified
Through my TEFL certification, I stumbled upon online teaching and the digital nomad lifestyle. I don’t want to sound too dramatic here, but getting TEFL certified changed my life. I know, it sounds cheesy, but hear me out!
I travelled the world while saving money and started blogging about my online teaching experiences. And no matter what’s going on in the world, my online English teaching job means I’ll have a remote income source.
Getting TEFL certified was the catalyst.
For me, it was the first step in a long and fun journey to location independence and a new career as an online English teacher. Completing your TEFL certification could set you up for success in ways you haven’t even considered yet.
In this post, I’ll talk about my journey and 15 reasons why you should get TEFL certified too!  
Travel around the world, while teaching in different countries, or online
1. You’ll Be Qualified For Online Job Opportunities 
Now more than ever, having online income opportunities can be a gamechanger. Teaching English online is a flexible and fun way to earn a remote living.
Most online teaching positions have no minimum or maximum teaching hours. Because you can teach classes when it suits your schedule, some people use online teaching as their full income source while others use it as a side hustle. 
It can be whatever you need it to be, and getting TEFL certified is often the first step.
While not every company requires that you have a certificate, the vast majority do. Having a TEFL certification will give you the best chance of finding an online teaching job and will help you stand out above the competition.
You’ll have more jobs to choose from and could even earn a higher starting pay rate compared to teachers without TEFL certificates. 
2. You Can Teach English Abroad
Even though I ended up teaching online instead of teaching in person, the idea of teaching in a classroom abroad is still very appealing. What better way to immerse yourself in another culture, make new friends, and connect with students?
A TEFL certification is required for almost all legitimate teaching positions around the world. It’s often the only way to get your work visa paperwork processed, so having your certificate already completed will make your transition abroad smoother.

If you dream of teaching in another country, you’ll have a much easier time achieving that if you get TEFL certified first. 
3. You’ll Learn About What Really Goes Into Teaching
Teaching is challenging. There are a lot of moving parts that go into running an effective classroom.
In a single day, teachers might be responsible for lesson planning, creating worksheets and activities, grading papers, organizing a review game, ending an unauthorized paper airplane tournament, and attending teacher meetings — not to mention actually teaching their students!
Getting TEFL certified will give you a toolkit you can take into your future classroom so that these responsibilities aren’t so daunting.
Most reputable courses include modules specifically designed to prepare you for the realities of day to day life as a teacher, such as:

Assessment
Using Resources and Visuals in the classroom
With solid foundational knowledge, you’ll be equipped to efficiently manage your teaching responsibilities. 
4. You’ll Be Able To Better Serve Your Students
As a teacher, your students are your number one priority. They are the “why” behind every decision, and it’s our job as educators to serve them to the best of our abilities. 
Getting TEFL certified will give you more skills and knowledge to bring to your classroom. You’ll be trained in how to effectively teach grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The more prepared you are, the better education you can give to your students. 
Living in China while teaching kindergarten students
In addition to learning technical teaching skills, almost every TEFL program I’ve seen has training on how to best accommodate students of different backgrounds, ability levels, and interests. 
These are essential skills to have, especially if you’re new to teaching. 
5. Many Companies Offer Job Assistance 
Another perk of getting TEFL certified is that programs often offer some kind of job placement assistance.
After you finish the training with your company, they can help you make initial connections to prospective employers and guide you through the hiring process. 
Some platforms even have job hiring boards and helpful partnerships to help you find the best position for you. Other companies offer resume guidance, interview practice, and one-on-one suggestions.
If the thought of having to locate, apply for, and actually get accepted for a job in a totally new country feels overwhelming, having an expert on your side can make it much easier. 
If this is something important to you, make sure you enroll in a TEFL course that explicitly says they provide job placement assistance. 
6. You Can Get Certified From Home
Many TEFL training programs offer online course options that you can do from the comfort of home.
I was able to do my course online with the International TEFL Academy with a busy schedule of working full time, growing a patio tomato garden that never really took off, and teaching myself to play guitar… poorly. 
If you choose a course that’s online, you’ll be able to work through the material at your own pace. You don’t have to worry about taking time off work or leaving your tomatoes to fend for themselves while travelling far away to a training center. 
It will be a lot of work, but it’s work you can do at a time that suits your busy life.

7. You Can Get Certified Abroad and Experience a New Country
If you’d prefer, you can also choose to take an in-person TEFL course at a training center around the world!
Whether you’ve got the travel bug or want to see what a country is really like before committing to a job there, this might be a great fit for you. 
A friend of mine got TEFL certified in Hanoi, Vietnam. She didn’t know where she wanted to teach but was interested in living in Asia.
When she saw a TEFL training program in northern Vietnam, the thought of delicious pho and stunning landscapes won her heart. She packed her bags and took a leap into the unknown. 
Get a feel for the country before moving there by taking your TEFL course abroad
While completing her training in Hanoi, she made friends who had connections to a prestigious language school in the city. She was able to see the school and meet with her potential employer while finishing her TEFL training. 
By the end of her TEFL program, she had lined up a job that would start in a few weeks.
She was able to apartment hunt and travel around the country before her contract began. She already knew her way around the city and had a network of friends, thanks to her TEFL course, so the transition to life in Hanoi was a smooth one. 
If you plan to teach abroad, rather than online, this may be the way to go.
8. Once Certified, You Can Qualify For More Competitive Jobs
While it is possible to find some English teaching jobs without a TEFL certification, you will have significantly more options if you have one. This includes access to more competitive teaching positions around the world.
When it comes to teaching abroad, jobs with higher salaries, more desirable teaching hours, and other benefits like accommodation can have strict requirements.
In some positions, having a TEFL certification could mean you earn more money!
With some companies, the more credentials you have, the higher the pay. For example, many online teaching companies use your experience, credentials, and performance in the interview to determine your base pay rate per class.
The more qualifications you have, the more money you can earn
Teachers with more experience and higher levels of certification could earn more for each lesson they teach. Why not give yourself the best chance possible to earn the highest starting pay rate available? 
Having a TEFL certificate could mean you get access to more competitive positions and that your application stands out from the crowd.  
9. It’s a Small Investment, With a Big Payout
Considering the amount of money you could make as an English teacher, either online or in-person, the investment in a TEFL certificate is relatively small.
While it can be hard to shell out a few hundred or even a few thousand dollars upfront to get certified, most teachers make back the money they spent in just a few months in their new position — especially if you choose one of the cheap TEFL courses.
Just make sure that you always opt for a course that is accredited, and legitimate. (Note, all of the ones listed in this article, and any article on Goats On The Road are fully accredited). 
For me, I earned back the cost of the TEFL certification I took in just two months of teaching English online. In terms of lifelong earnings, it’s one of the best investments I’ve made to date. 
10. Most TEFL Certificates Never Expire
Unlike traditional teaching licenses that have to be maintained to stay valid, most TEFL certifications never expire.
That means that once you hold a TEFL certificate, you’ll be able to use it for life. Even if your plans change and you don’t end up teaching right away, it’s always an option down the road.
If you’re interested in teaching and you’re able to get certified now, go ahead and do it. It’s one less step you’ll need to worry about if you start teaching in the future. 
11. It Gives You a Chance To Try Teaching Before Committing 
Wouldn’t it be great if you could test out a job before applying? With a TEFL certification, you can!
Depending on the program you enroll in, you will get training on what an actual classroom looks like or the chance to practice teaching in a real learning environment. 
You might discover that you’re better suited to work with adults than young children, or that working with students one-on-one makes your heart sing.
Knowing this kind of information can point you toward a career that’s fully in line with your strengths and interests. 
This essentially lets you test drive life as an English teacher before committing to a long-term job in a new country. You’ll get to see if you vibe with the responsibilities of teaching, which could save you money and headaches down the road. 
12. You’ll Have a Career Safety Net
This is probably one of the biggest upsides for me.
Having a TEFL certificate feels like a career safety net. I know that this document qualifies me for in-person teaching jobs around the world and jobs online.
If anything happens to my current teaching job and income streams, I could pivot and start teaching somewhere else. 
Being able to work remotely is a great safety net
Having this security in the back of my mind allowed me to take risks and pursue a second untraditional career path as a blogger. I knew that if I couldn’t make ends meet with my blog and online teaching job, I could always apply for an in-person teaching position abroad. 
If you’re looking for job security, a TEFL certification is a good bet. 
13. If You Wanted, You Could Travel For Years
One of the best parts about a career as a teacher is that you aren’t limited to one location. Since a TEFL certification is an internationally recognized credential, you could potentially teach in several different countries all around the world.
For example, maybe your first teaching job is a one year contract in South Korea. When that contract is over, you move to Taiwan to teach in Taipei and teach for two years there.
Next, you head to China to teach, then Japan. After that, you head to more tropical climates for a year in Costa Rica, then spend a few months teaching in Colombia.

With a certification that is accepted almost everywhere, you could spend years travelling the world while actually making good money. 
14. You’ll Meet Like-Minded People
Even though my TEFL course was online, I was able to connect with dozens of like-minded teachers all over the world. The program I took had a large and active student base so I could find teacher friends in pretty much any country I visited. 
When I went to Germany, I used the alumni Facebook groups to meet people in my town. Then I went to Bangkok and met a whole group of teachers within days of arriving.
Having those social circles built into my travels really helped me feel at home, no matter where I was in the world. 
15. It’ll Open You Up to a World of Possibilities
For those with itchy feet, having a TEFL certification can give you access to interesting travel opportunities well into the future.  
For me, getting TEFL certified meant a fun online job, travel opportunities, new friends, and job security.
