OK correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like the main 'yin/yang' parallel with Atsushi and Akutagawa is not something like 'this one is bad but secretly has a good side and this one is good but secretly has a bad side'.

I feel like it's more about 'who they are at their core vs who they choose to be'.

At his core Akutagawa is kind and at his core Atsushi is not. But despite this Atsushi tries every day to make the kinder choices and I love him so much for it. He has to work so hard to be good.

He wants to be a bitch SO bad I know he does but he tries his best to help people and be nice (sometimes he fails but that's OK <3)

Atsushi doesn't always WANT to help people, a lot of the time he's selfish and scared, but he does help people anyway. He keeps helping people over and over again. There's still some selfish motivation to it, and his initial motivation for helping people was because the headmaster told him that's all he was worth, but overall he does care about the people he helps and it weighs on him if he fails to save them. And of course, as the series goes on he starts helping people more because he can rather than because he feels like he needs to.

In Akutagawa's case, he's still capable of being kind but his environment led him into being someone who chooses to hurt people. But he's always been a protector at heart. In the start he was bad compared to Atsushi because he was choosing to hurt people and keep the cycle of abuse going. Just like how Atsushi developed in why he saved people, Akutagawa starts to get redeemed when he chooses to not just act on his rage. Not only does he start to spare people, but he speaks more kindly to them (apologising to Higuchi and telling Kyouka he's proud of her). It all culminates into the moment he chooses to help Atsushi and sacrifice himself for him, going back to his core value of being a protector. Even when he's finally revived, he keeps this role in his new position as Aya's Knight.

I kind of see the streaks of white in Akutagawa and the streaks of black in Atsushi not as their 'hidden sides' but as their fundamental selfs. That's who they are at their core, and their main colours (black for Akutagawa and white for Atsushi) are how they're presented to everyone else and how they try to have people see them as.

so we all know the main characters of course... but these two I really like in the books- for very different reasons

thought to myself how absurd it was that nightmare has so many designs to himself alone.

I don't think I know other characters that have this many drastic changes done to them just in the span of their plotline. like y'know, sometimes characters do change from certain events, maybe get injuries, different clothes or haircut, or go through arcs that change their personality.

but nightmare here literally changes to entirely different characters as the plot goes on, design wise and personality wise.

and it's super fitting for him, cuz he's the one character that puts the theme of identity on the forefront. he spends his entire life searching for what it means to be 'nightmare', so he goes through a thousand different identities to find the one that truly defines him. but at his core, he's still the same nightmare he's ever been.

even after becoming king and becoming everything he thinks he ever wanted to be (rich, powerful, ect.), he's still unhappy with himself because he spent all this time rejecting his actual true self in favor of being somebody that wasn't (and could never be) him.

what truly defines nightmare is that he is bound to no limitation on what he could be, but still choses to put those limitations on himself.

what truly defines nightmare is nothing, and being nothing scares him to death, so he would rather be everybody else but himself, not once considering that maybe he could've changed that nothing into anything he wants, but fear just blinds him that much.

the irony of it all is that all he truly wanted at the end of the day was to be his own person, to be someone outside of sans's shadow, but only ended up jumping from sans's shadow to mettaton's. the only way he found to not be a clone of sans was to become a clone of someone else.

damn... maybe the true nightmare was the friends we made along the way.

can't stop thinking abt the concept of arthur hearing about this 'emrys' throughout different occasions here and there in the beginning of s4, and at first not thinking much of it, then when the name keeps getting repeated from different villains/sorcerers he interacts with, it finally catches his attention and he becomes genuinely concerned. he makes it a bit of a personal mission to find out who he is, but it's all a very lowkey side plot that's not the main focus (think of the 'traitor' arc also in s4). of course he talks about it with merlin, but to avoid suspicion, merlin shuts him down every time and tries to make him think this mysterious sorcerer is nothing to worry about.

as more time goes on, and the more arthur learns about this powerful sorcerer always protecting him from harm, and as much as he hates to admit this to anyone, most of all himself, as he's only ever been taught to hate magic and anything to do with it- he starts realizing 'emrys' is less of this evil entity that he has to hunt down and kill, and more of a guardian angel that he has genuine interest now in getting to meet. which would also be interesting in terms of contradicting morgana's plot in the same season.

then, in the s4 finale, something that merlin does or says at the end makes him finally connect the dots. he says nothing. the season closes with him just.......... left with the unbearable conflict of it all. the feeling of absolute betrayal from his own friend- the closest person to him that he turned out to not really Know at all, the anger at being lied to and his own obliviousness, all with also the gratitude to this man who has been protecting him without asking for anything in return, the confusion of why he's doing any of it, and the question deep down whether he even deserves it. he is just. left with so many questions and contradicting feelings that he just... says nothing. and we are left with this as the cliffhanger for s4's ending.

Do you have any recommendations for a nonbinary main character who uses they/them pronouns, is gender neutral, and their AGAB is not mentioned? I can't seem to find any books fitting this, and it makes me extremely dysphoric. I don't identify with masc or fem at all, and I can't find any books with a gender neutral nonbinary MC, where their AGAB isn't mentioned or alluded to except for "I Wish You All The Best". Any NB character book I find is either trans masc or trans fem aligned and I just want to read a book about someone like me...

🎥 Lux is capable of possessing any form which has ever been projected via light (cartoons, live action recordings, even letters and symbols), but he chose Mr. Ring-A-Ding because he personally loves the original cartoon. as the God of Light, Lux has had all of eternity to see every which way that light has been used to amuse the strange little flesh-creatures popping up throughout the universe. so the idea that he became incredibly attached to this 1930s-era Fleischer knockoff and decided "that's me!" is unendingly funny to me 😂 🎥 incredibly, Lux is actually the oldest member of the Pantheon of Discord, being formed at the moment of Event One/The Big Bang!! to try and track Lux's historical origins is to be a cosmologist: for as long as the stars have burnt, he has been present, though without form and conscience. i feel like Lux is also what we'd think of as the most 'inhuman' member of the Pantheon, because his understanding of personality and morality are very far removed from ours. the Toymaker, Maestro and Sutekh all understand their own capacity for cruelty and how it impacts lesser life forms, but Lux can't understand why someone wouldn't want to be trapped in film and to live forever. to him, we're not much more than insects 😳 🎥 that being said, Lux has taken a real shine to humanity in much the same way the Toymaker did: because of our capacity for entertainment. there are a billion species he could torment with his godly powers, but Lux chose Earth because he feels we make the best 'use' of his light...and anything we make, he is. he has watched us from afar for millennia, but it was only when the Doctor cast salt at the edge of the universe that Lux finally had an excuse to beam down and, ahem, get the film rolling 😉
