if your "military operation" results in civilian deaths over three times the number of "militants" killed, including children, your military is a fucking immoral failure. no wonder the palestinians aren't "peacefully protesting". you're fucking slaughtering their kids.

“I think there is a simpler explanation to the tragedy and the barbarism on October the 7th, which is that you cannot indefinitely contain a group of people under military occupation for decades and expect that there won't be violence. There is violence in the Middle East, and the root cause of that violence is an illegal military occupation that is now in what, it's 57th year in the occupied West Bank and Gaza. And this is not just me saying this.
I mean, people like General Shlomo Brom, one of Israel's most famous military strategists, says, the oppressed will rise against the oppressor because it's absurd to hope that Israel can indefinitely contain with its military might millions of Palestinians who claim the right to a free, normal life. That is the statement of Shlomo Brom.
It's not true that the previous Gaza conflicts were all started by Hamas. Some were, but not all of them. Ceasefires have been broken on both sides and that's been well documented by multiple neutral observers and international observers.
But just on the broader point, Israel was never done with Gaza. This myth that they pulled out all the settlers and the occupation ended, first of all, under international law, Gaza is still occupied.
The Israelis control most of the land borders, all of the naval waters, all of the airspace. You tell me a country in the world that would accept that, any kind of country that you would call independent or sovereign. The Israelis even control the population register in Gaza, which means if you're born in Gaza, the Israelis are the ones who register you in control.
All of the information about your birth, life, and death. So this idea that Gaza was free, it was not free. And the boycott, the siege, I mean, it was not defensive.
Again, multiple human rights groups, including Israeli human rights groups like Gisha have said over the years, that the boycott was not defensive, that it was arbitrary, that it was cruel. Items like pasta, coriander, right? These are items that were banned at certain points going into Gaza.
Even now, David Miliband, the former British Foreign Minister, head of the International Rescue Committee, went on CNN this week to point out that dual-use items are being blocked going into Gaza. Entire aid trucks are being turned away because there's a scissors in them. A pair of scissors is inside a truck.
For medical purposes, the entire truck is turned away. For years now, the people in Gaza have been blockaded, besieged. The UN said it would be unlivable years ago.
We're now in 2024. It's certainly unlivable now. So no, I don't believe the Israeli narrative.
And one last thing, let's say everything Israel said was true. That still does not justify the collective punishment of 2.2 million people, half of whom are children, and who are now in the midst of one of the worst famines in living memory, according to the experts.
[…]
I've been very, very, very critical of Hamas. I've been critical of Hamas for decades. I've been critical of Hamas since October the 7th.
I was critical of Hamas on October the 7th. So no, I'm not sparing in my criticism of Hamas, but the missing context here, of course, is that we don't fund Hamas. I'm not responsible for Hamas.
I am responsible for the famine in Gaza. I am responsible for the killing of 30,000 people in Gaza because my taxes paid for it. The United States government is funding one side of this conflict.
The United States does not fund Hamas, last time I checked. So this idea that we are either fund them or protect them with a UN veto or arm Hamas, I don't think we send arms to Hamas, we do to Israel. Therefore, that is the focus of my journalism.
And by the way, yes, the focus of my journalism right now is on criticism of Israel because the rest of the US media has completely failed on this issue, has dropped the ball. I mean, I can go through The New York Times, The Washington Post, and show the exact opposite, pieces that are providing cover and safety for the Israeli narrative, including in absurd headlines where we go out of our way to use the passive voice and never cite that Israel is responsible for bombing a hospital or Israel is responsible for bombing a refugee camp. So I'm trying to do a little bit of correction on my end with this new media organization.
But look, Hamas is a brutal group. What it did on October the 7th was pure terror. They killed innocents, they abducted innocent babies as hostages into the war crime.
But none of that justifies what Israel is doing right now. And nor are we responsible for what Hamas is doing. But we are, in New York and across the country, sadly, we are responsible for the crimes that Israel is carrying out.
And that's the point I'm trying to make.”

How did people become serfs? Like, birth was probably the answer for some, but were other people made serfs after being born in a different social class? And how did it get started, anyway?
Given that the legal default in medieval society was that you were born into the legal status of your (usually male) parent and could not change it, most serfs post the first generation were born serfs.
But as I was suggesting in my post about the Normans, you could be made into a serf through a change to the underlying land tenure that defined your legal status. So for example, you could start out a free churl (wasn't initially a pejorative, but there is something insidious about the way that words for working people get transformed into insults), and then 1066 rolls around.
All of the sudden some collaborator translator is explaining to you what some French-speaking foreign priest is saying about how the new king's new legal system doesn't recognize "churl" as a valid status, please tick the box for either "knight" or "serf," and if you complain there's this French-speaking illiterate violent maniac on horseback backing him up - and the maniac thinks he owns the land your father's bones are buried in and you and your family come with the land, and he'll kill you if you disagree or if he gets bored.
Tumblr media
As to how it got started...arguably it all goes back to Diocletian. As a reforming Roman Emperor in the Crisis of the Third Century, Diocletian was having trouble getting his hands on enough hard cash to pay the troops who guarded the borders (who were increasingly led by men with titles that would be later translated as Duke, Count, and Baron, which is a bad sign), so he started paying them in-kind and extracting taxes from the coloni (tenant farmers) in-kind. In order to ensure that revenue from the coloni remained consistent, Diocletian issued an edict that it was illegal for the child of a coloni to hold any other occupation than coloni, and that it was illegal for coloni to leave the land upon which they farmed.
Pretty soon, once the Emperor goes away and there's only the Duke, the Count, and the Baron running the show, the local warlord just cuts out the middle-man and takes the in-kind taxes directly, calls them rent, and asserts that they own the land (or at least the right to rents and taxes from the land) while menacingly sharpening a sword. And hey presto, you've got serfdom!

🚨🇳🇮 Nicaragua v Germany ICJ case
Nicaragua filed a case at the ICJ accusing Germany of facilitating genocide and violating its obligations under the genocide convention by providing political, financial & military support to Israel + halting funding to UNRWA.
Further arguing Germany’s complicity in war crimes, the illegal occupation of Palestine, and Israel’s apartheid regime through its long-standing support of Israel.
Nicaragua requests the ICJ to issue emergency provisional measures for Germany to:
• Immediately halt all aid and military assistance to Israel that violates the genocide convention & international humanitarian law
•Ensure already delivered weapons aren’t used to commit genocide or violate international humanitarian law
• Resume funding to UNRWA + ensure humanitarian aid reaches Palestinians
This case is a warning to all countries that they can be held accountable, as their unconditional financial & military support to Israel makes them complicit in genocide.

On Monday, the university sent Brandeis [Students for Justice in Palestine] a notice that its status as an official campus group had been rescinded “because it openly supports Hamas, which the United States has designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.” “This decision was not made lightly, as Brandeis is dedicated to upholding free speech principles,” the notice said. ... Brandeis’s decision means the group is no longer an officially sanctioned organization. It will not receive university funding and it is prohibited from using the university’s logo. The group was forced to cancel a vigil Monday that it had planned to hold for the victims of the Israeli bombardment of Gaza.

We rise today in unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian resistance in all of its forms. It is a moral imperative to recognize and support the resilience of the people who have endured 75 years of oppression, displacement, and the denial of their basic rights. The Palestinian resistance is a multifaced struggle for self-determination, justice, and the restoration of human dignity. It encompasses not only armed resistance, but also civil disobedience, grassroots organizing, and cultural expression. It is a testament to the unwavering spirit of the people who refuse to be silenced in the face of adversity. We reject the characterization of Palestinian resistance as "terrorism" as indicated in President Ron's email to the student body. Such a label ignores the ongoing occupation of Palestine, the expansion of illegal settlements, and the denial of basic human rights. We must understand that the Palestinian resistance, in all of its manifestations, is a response to a history of dispossession and oppression. To condemn resistance but not the terrorist colonial violence, that resistance came as a response to, is despicable, ahistorical, and a deliberate misrepresentation of what is going on in the occupied land. Instead, we should strive for Justice for the Palestinian people. We encourage our community to follow instagram accounts such as @eye.on.palestine and Resistance News Network on Telegram for live news from the ground, and to reach out to us for any clarification on Al-Aqsa Flood battle. For Canadians seeking to flood MPs and reps with emails regarding the current situation in Palestine, I’ve found an email template.
To Prime Minister Justin Trudeau:
Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly: [email protected]
Dear [MP/representative],
I’m horrified by the ongoing genocide being committed in Palestine, as well as Canada’s direct involvement in it. Israeli occupation under a far-right nationalist government is rapidly escalating the full ethnic cleansing of Palestinians of all religions. Citizens in Canada do not unconditionally support Israel, and many of us support resistance against apartheid.
We are aware that Canada holds massive influence over Israel’s militarization and can demand a complete end to occupation if we wished. We will not stop until this happens.
If your party and government do not demand that Israel’s Occupying Forces put an end to their illegal occupation and stop Canada from giving weapons to Israel, I will have to use whatever platforms I have to make sure that you are never re-elected.
Our demands for Israel, on behalf of the citizens of Gaza and the West Bank: Open the Raffah border crossing and keep it open for humanitarian relief. STOP the genocide of Gaza.
If you truly believe in democracy as you claim, you will listen to Palestinian voices and stop using the same propaganda tactics that have been used to manipulate the public during past atrocities.
You have the power to put pressure on Israel and help end suffering under this occupation. If you want to be on the right side of history, demand that humanitarian aid be allowed into Gaza and help put an end to ethnic cleansing by the Israeli military and their use of blockades. Ensure that Canada vocally supports reparations and return of land to Palestinian citizens.
Do not be complicit in genocide.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]

A bill has been submitted to the United States congress calling for a full review of the country’s bilateral relationship with South Africa following the International Court of Justice ruling that found it plausible that Israel has committed acts of genocide against Gaza.
The bipartisan bill which was introduced by US Republican congressman John James and Democratic Party congressman Jared Moskowitz this week could threaten South Africa’s prospects to benefit from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
The bill will still need to be discussed and passed by congress.
It states that not later than 30 days after the date of enactment of this Act, US President Joe Biden in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense, shall certify to the appropriate congressional committees and release publicly an unclassified determination explicitly stating whether South Africa has engaged in activities that undermine United States national security or foreign policy interests.
It further states that the US government must provide an unclassified report submitted to the appropriate congressional committees justifying the determination upon its certificate.
US Embassy mission spokesperson David Feldmann declined to comment. The ANC and the government’s response will be added when received.
The bill accuses the ANC of acting inconsistent with its publicly stated policy of nonalignment in international affairs.
It states that the South African Government has a history of siding with malign actors, including Hamas and the Russian Federation.
The US congress bill argues that the South African government’s support of Hamas dates back to 1994, when the ANC first came into power, taking a hardline stance of consistently accusing Israel of practising apartheid.
The ANC and the South African government have however been known to have ties with the Palestine Liberation Organisation dating back to former president Nelson Mandela’s term in office.
“Following Hamas’ unprovoked and unprecedented horrendous attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, where Hamas terrorists killed and kidnapped hundreds of Israelis, members of the South African Government and leaders of the ANC have delivered a variety of anti-semitic and anti-Israel-related statements and actions,” it reads.
The US congress states that some of the anti-semitic remarks include President Cyril Ramaphosa’s statements accusing Israel of genocide.
It said that the anti-semitic statements also include International Relations and Cooperations Minister Naledi Pandor’s statement expressing concern about escalating violence, urging Israel’s restraint in response.
It adds that Pandor implicitly blamed Israel for provoking the attack through “continued illegal occupation of Palestine land, continued settlement expansion, desecration of the Al Aqsa Mosque and Christian holy sites, and ongoing oppression of the Palestinian people.
It accused the ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri of anti-semitic remarks after stating that the decision by Palestinians to respond to the brutality of the settler Israeli apartheid regime is unsurprising.
“On December 29, 2023, South Africa filed a politically motivated suit in the International Court of Justice wrongfully accusing Israel of committing genocide. The South African Government has pursued increasingly close relations with the Russian Federation, which has been accused of perpetrating war crimes in Ukraine and indiscriminately undermines human rights. South Africa’s robust relationship with Russia spans the military and political space, including allowing a United States-sanctioned Russian cargo ship, the Lady R, to dock and transfer arms at a South African naval base in December 2022,” the bill stated.
It also cites that South Africa dispatched multiple high-level official delegations to Russia to further political, intelligence, and military cooperation.
The congress bill states that South Africa and the ANC’s relationship with the Chinese government and its ruling Chinese Communist Party(CCP) – which is committing gross violations of human rights in the Xinjiang province and implementing economically coercive tactics around the globe – undermine South Africa’s democratic constitutional system of governance.
These acts include what it says are ongoing ANC and CCP inter-party cooperation; recruitment of former United States and NATO fighter pilots to train Chinese People’s Liberation Army pilots at the Test Flying Academy of South Africa; South Africa’s hosting of 6 Chinese government-backed and CCP-linked Confucius Institutes; South Africa’s participation in a political training school in Tanzania funded by the Chinese Communist Party, cooperation with the Chinese global Belt and Road Initiative; and the widespread presence in South Africa’s media and technology sectors of PRC state linked firms.
“The ANC-led South African Government has a history of substantially mismanaging a range of state resources and has often proven incapable of effectively delivering public services, threatening the South African people and the South African economy,” the bill stated.
The bill accuses Ramaphosa of having declared the national state of disaster over the worsening energy crisis, “the worsening, multi-year power crisis caused by the ANC’s chronic mismanagement of the state owned power company Eskom, resulting from endemic, high-level corruption”.
It states that the persistence of Transnet’s insufficient capacity, an on-going outbreak of cholera, a failure to provide clean water to households and rampant state capture are part of ANC governments mismanagement of the state.

The National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) joins all patriotic and democratic peoples and organizations around the world in extending solidarity with the Palestinian people, specifically the people in Gaza, as they intensify their armed resistance against the imperialist-backed occupation forces of Israel.
For more than a century since the Balfour statement in 1917, the Palestinian people have endured endless waves of ethnic cleansing, blockades, land grabs, the destruction of Palestinian towns, desecration of sacred sites, and daily raids into their homes. The escalating attacks and ruthless occupation of Israeli forces have pushed the Palestinian people to fight back and take up arms. Their armed revolutionary resistance against Israel as well as both US and European aggressors is therefore just and righteous.
The US provides $3 billion a year in military aid to Israel, making the Zionist state the largest cumulative recipient of US foreign assistance since World War II. The Pentagon has also positioned stockpiles of arms and ammunition throughout Israel in addition to the military backing it receives as a major NATO ally. Despite the inferior weapons of the Palestinian revolutionary forces against the US-imperialist-supplied arms of Israel, the Palestinian people have admirably remained steadfast and determined to end their oppressive and illegal occupation by Israel.
In this context, the intensification of the Palestinian armed resistance therefore becomes an even more powerful act of assertion of their right to self-determination and self-defense against the intolerable and brutal invasion and genocide of Israel. The recent offensives launched by the Hamas is a manifestation of the indomitable longing of the Palestinians for freedom and dignity. They deserve the long-standing solidarity of all democratic and freedom-loving peoples all over the world.
Like the Filipino people’s armed resistance against the exploitation and oppression of the US-puppet Marcos fascist regime, the Palestinian people are resisting a Zionist regime abetted and supported by US and European imperialists. US imperialism in particular, is using its puppet state of Israel to maintain hegemony and control of oil in the Arab region. Thus, Israel has operated with impunity as far as its aggression and hostility against the Palestinian people and other Arab nations are concerned. It acts as a mad dog of the US in the Middle East, abetting US imperialist aggression and interventionism in the region.
Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people, occupation of Palestinian lands and terrorist bombings of Palestinian communities must stop. Israel’s Nazi-like pogrom in the Gaza and West Bank must stop immediately. The Palestinian people’s armed resistance deserves the strongest solidarity from all national liberation movements and all exploited, oppressed and working peoples of the world.
Luis Jalandoni | Chief International Representative | National Democratic Front of the Philippines

The Palestinian War Issue 2: International Solidarity
The war in Palestine which began early this morning was met with solidarity with many groups, from groups in the MENA whose support was unsurprising and expected. Nations like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain were almost certainly going to support the zionist state without question; this was again not surprising. Outside of the MENA, it gets more complicated and many parties like Sinn Fein in light of the war have turned their heel on the Palestinian issue, the Sinn Fein spokesperson on foreign affairs and defense Matt Carthy put out a statement calling for an “urgent end to the hostilities in Gaza and Israel.” This heel turn is saddening yet not surprising for the European ‘socialists’, a few French and UK parties who were pro-Palestine before the war have backstepped to a liberal notion of peace. The Palestinian people have assured the world today that peace is not an option, nor was it ever. After 70 years of occupation and then the genocide of the Nakba, peace was not an option for Palestine when their people were beaten, and killed, and their land was stolen every day. You see in Ireland when the Troubles were the topic of the day, Palestinians did turn away and say, “Oh those are Europeans why should we care” or “They should find peaceful solutions to the oppression of Irish people in Northern Ireland”. No, they stood with us in solidarity calling for the liberation of the North from the occupation of the UK. And in those days Irish Republicans stood with Palestine against the genocide. I am foremost not here to point and say names, but I am here to talk about such ideological issues as the turncoats in Sinn Fein that have refused to support the war of liberation for oppressed peoples in Palestine. Even people who 15 years ago were calling for the liberation of Palestine in this way just as they called for the liberation of Ireland like Jermery Corbyn have called for a ceasefire. Let me make it clear Palestine doesn't care if you're Jermery Corbyn, Cornel West or Sinn Fein's whole voter base. Calling for peace when facing a certain continuation of genocide is an unacceptable demand the only demand that is acceptable for peace is the end of the genocide, the end of all illegal settler colonies and the immediate end to violence at Al-Aqsa Mosque none of these quite simple and most moderate demands will be met without the violence that Sinn Fein and the others ive so mentioned called for an end of. The liberation of Palestine from genocide is a moderate demand.

Harvard joins Columbia, MIT, Emerson, Tufts, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, University of Pittsburgh, University of Maryland, Berkeley, Cuny, The New School, Washington University in Saint Louis, UNC Chapel Hill and more as it establishes Liberated Zone
The bold text makes it look like ‘HARVARD ESTABLISHES LIBERATED ZONE’
2nd:
Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine Coalition: Who We Are.
3rd:
We, the Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine Coalition, are a group of students and student workers at Harvard University committed to Palestinian liberation. We are part of a rich tradition of students who stood up to U.S. imperialism in Vietnam and Iraq, rallied against apartheid in South Africa, fought for Black liberation in the United Staes, and built national living wage campaigns on university campuses. We understand that all of our historic movements for freedom and justice are intertwined. The Palestinian cause if not for Palestinians alone – it is a cause for people of conscience, concerned with humanity, freedom, and justice.
We have established this Liberated Zone to call for an end to Harvard’s moral and material complicity in the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.
Over the past seven months, we have witnessed Israel and the United States unleash unimaginable cruelty in Gaza. As we write this, Israel has murdered more than 34,000 Palestinians, including 14,000 children. Every day brings more horrifying images than the last: families facing starvation, people undergoing amputation without anesthesia, newly discovered mass graves, entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble.
4th:
These atrocities are not new. Since the original Nakba – Arabic for catastrophe – of 1948, when 750,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed from their land, Palestinians have been dispossessed and fragmented by a pernicious apartheid regime, a brutal military occupation, and a suffocating blockade. Zionism, the political project rationalizing this violence, requires the subjugation of Palestinian life and the continued colonialization of Palestinian land. There can be no equivocation: Palestine is occupied from Gaza to the Galilee, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.
This oppression is co-signed and co-sponsored by the United States government and its institutions. The U.S. continues to sustain the Zionist colonial regime with billions of dollars in military funding. Since its founding, Israel has been the largest cumulative recipient of U.S. foreign aid, receiving approximately $300 billion in economic and military assistance.
5th:
As we walk the halls of Harvard, study in its libraries, and sleep in its dormitories, we are acutely aware that there are no universities remaining in the Gaza Strip. Israel has robbed Palestinians of their rights to education by systematically destroying academic infrastructures and communities. Professors, teachers, students, and academic workers have been targeted and killed along with the rest of Gaza’s population. As students, educators, and graduate workers, we have a duty to fight against this genocide.
Palestine is not only a moral issue. It is an issue that affects our campus, one that fundamentally implicates Harvard University. As of 2019, Harvard had invested at least $200 million in companies with ties to illegal Israeli settlements, a flagrant violation of international human rights law, and at least $86,625 worth of investments in the Israeli military. Today, the Harvard Management Company, which oversees the world’s largest university endowment of $51 billion, discloses no information about the scale of natures of its investments in Israel.
6th
On its campus, we have witnessed the university relentlessly suppress voices in its community speaking out against the actions of the Israeli state and for the rights of the Palestinian people. Time and time again, we have seen Harvard pioneer and affirm the “Palestine exception to free speech,” silencing professors and students when they speak out about Palestine or include Palestinian liberation in their ethic of social justice. The university is also failing to protect its community from violent and racist anti-Palestinian harassment. Just this week, Harvard has unilaterally suspended the Palestine Solidarity Committee after months of administrative persecution and discriminatory measures.
Enough is enough. In the past seven months, our protests against the intensifying genocidal campaign in Gaza have been met with repression, administrative targeting, willfully racist attacks (including from politicians and faculty members), and arbitrary policy changes designed to silence our voices. We will not be deterred. By launching this demonstration, we renew our commitment to protest Harvard’s moral, institutional, and financial complicity in the genocide of Palestinians.
7th:
As student governments in schools across Harvard pass resolutions for divestment, the University must contend with the facts that its students will not tolerate its support for genocide, violence, and apartheid. In doing so, we proudly continue Harvard’s legacy of anti-war, anti-racist student organizing, from the mock “shanty towns” established in Harvard Yard in 1986 to protest apartheid in South Africa, to the 1969 University Hall occupation protesting against the war on Vietnam.
Our movement is one part of the tapestry of liberation movements. Harvard itself is a product of land theft and indigenous erasure: the initial funds to establish this university were used for the ‘education and conversion’ of indigenous people. By creating this Liberated Zone, we hope to begin the work of building the world we want to inhabit: a world free of the shackles of colonialism.
8th:
The Palestinian people, like all oppressed peoples, have a right to resist their annihilation. We hold this to be a precondition for Palestinian liberation, as we do the inalienable right of return, a fundamental value that challenges and denaturalizes the colonial fragmentation of the Palestinian community. Our act of civil disobedience here at Harvard is grounded in Palestinian values of sumoud – Arabic for steadfastness – and love for life.
We are driven by the belief that a better world is possible: a world free of racism, white supremacy, cishetero-patriarchy. Ableism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hatred. It is for this reason that we are compelled to take action.
9th:
Our demands: Following the lead of our brave comrades on campuses across the country, this Liberated Zone is a demonstration of our love of justice, our hope for a free Palestine, and our dream of a liberated future for all. We see our institution’s complicity as one link among many that must be severed on the path to liberation.
As such, we demand that Harvard University:
1. Disclose any and all investments – both institutional and financial – in Israel, the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and the occupation of Palestine.
2. Divest from all such investments, and reinvest resources in Palestinian academic initiatives, communities, and culture.
3. Drop all charges against students for their organizing and activism, and commit to ending the weaponization of disciplinary policy.
The whole world is watching a genocide unfold before its eyes. We raise our voices to join the chorus of millions demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, an end to the occupation, and a free Palestine from the river to the sea. /id]

“The Bastard Child of The United States & The West, Illegal Regime of Isra-Hell” Starts 2nd Phase of War as UNGA Resolution Calls For Truce
— Yang Sheng | October 29, 2023
Tumblr media
A Ruthless Stand. Illustration: Liu Rui/ Global Times
Although the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Friday on Gaza which calls for an immediate and sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities, Israel still launched the second phase of its war against the Gaza Strip, bringing death toll on Palestine side since the war to nearly 8,000, mostly civilians including women and children.
Chinese analysts said that despite mounting pressure from the vast majority of the international community to stop the bloodshed, the international community is failing in its efforts because the US, a permanent member of UN Security Council with veto power and the protector of Israel in this region, has gone to great lengths to pave the way for a ground attack in the name of "counterterrorism" and "self-defense" of Israel and with the fast rising death toll, the conflict is likely to spill over to the whole Middle East.
On Friday, by a recorded vote of 121 in favor to 14 against, with 44 abstentions, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution titled "Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations," with countries including China, Russia, France, as well as Arab and Muslim countries, voting in favor, and even close US allies like the UK and Japan abstaining, while the US, Israel and a few other countries voted against.
The US has asked for China's help to prevent escalation of the crisis during US Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer's trip to China earlier this month, and during the latest meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in the US, Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed the view that there is a need to return to and implement the two-state solution, which is in line with China's stance about political solution of the Palestine-Israel issue.
However, according to the votes in the UN General Assembly and the Security Council, it shows that Washington holds a very different position compared not only to China but also to the vast majority of the international community in terms of a humanitarian truce, so to what extent China and the US can work together in stopping the crisis is still in question, as experts said this can happen only when Washington realizes that it should not stand on the wrong side of the history.
Long and Difficult War
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the nation on Saturday night that the military has opened a "second stage" in the "war against Hamas" by sending ground forces into Gaza and expanding attacks from the ground, air and sea, and he warned that the war will be "long and difficult," per Associated Press report.
The AP reported on Sunday that Gaza residents described the massive bombardment from the land, air and sea as "the most intense" of the three-week Israel-Hamas war. It knocked out most communications in the territory late on Friday and largely cut off the besieged enclave's 2.3 million people from the world.
According to Palestine's state TV on Sunday, the death toll from the relentless Israeli bombing of Gaza and clashes in the West Bank since October 7 has risen to 7,814, the Anadolu Agency reported. It said in a statement that 21,693 others were wounded as a result of Israel's actions "against our people."
Liu Zhongmin, a professor at the Middle East Studies Institute of Shanghai International Studies University, told the Global Times on Sunday that once Israeli forces launch a ground attack that aims at a long-term occupation of some areas of Gaza and seeking the complete elimination of Hamas, "the death toll will rise much more sharply than at present."
Street combat will be extremely brutal, the bombardments will be more intense, and due to the blockade, more civilians and the wounded will die because of the shortage of medicines, food and water. Israeli forces will also sustain heavy casualties because by using their network of tunnels, Hamas is capable of inflicting significant casualties on Israeli forces, Liu said.
With the rising death toll, the pressure on Israel and the US will rise as well, and if Israel's military offensive results in more casualties of Palestinian civilians, regional major powers like Iran and Saudi Arabia, as well as those who have already established diplomatic ties with Israel like Turkey and Egypt, will take further actions, said Wang Jin, an associate professor at the Institute of Middle Eastern Studies of Northwest University.
"Even though some of them might be reluctant to get involved, the fury among their nationals will force them to take actions, as helping Palestinians resist Israel is the shared and top political correctness among the Muslim world," Wang Jin noted.
Furies From Muslim World
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said in a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Sunday that the "Zionist regime's crimes have crossed the red lines, which may force everyone to take action. Washington asks us to not do anything, but they keep giving widespread support to Israel. The US sent messages to the Axis of Resistance but received a clear response on the battlefield."
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a huge rally in Istanbul on Saturday that "Israel, you are an occupier" and he accused the Israeli government of behaving like a "war criminal" and trying to "eradicate" Palestinians, according to media reports. "Of course, every country has the right to defend itself. But where is the justice in this case? There is no justice - just a vicious massacre happening in Gaza." After this, Israel said Saturday it was recalling its diplomatic staff from Turkey, media reported.
Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry denounced Israeli ground operations in Gaza in a statement released on Sunday on X, which it said would threaten the lives of Palestinian civilians and result in inhumane dangers.
The kingdom, which was heading toward normalizing relations with Israel before this round of conflict, warns of the danger of continuing to carry out these flagrant and unjustified violations that are contrary to international law."
On Thursday, the United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪, Jordan 🇯🇴, Bahrain 🇧🇭, Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦, Oman 🇴🇲, Qatar 🇶🇦, Kuwait 🇰🇼, Egypt 🇪🇬 and Morocco 🇲🇦, in a Joint Statement, Condemned the Targeting of Civilians and the "Flagrant Violations of International Law" in Gaza.
Iran, which considers Israel as an enemy, is likely to take more direct action to support forces like Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthi movement in Yemen, and Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt are likely to allow and encourage NGOs and other groups to break through the Israel's blockade of Gaza to provide humanitarian supplies to the Palestinians in the region, experts said.
Israel is facing a tough situation, as the war will not end in the short term as long as it insists on eliminating Hamas, and the casualties will increase terribly on both sides. However, if it stops the operation and accepts a truce, it will face huge pressures domestically, and the US will also share these problems, pressures and embarrassments with Israel before the end of the bloodshed, Chinese analysts noted.

A powerful truck explosion seriously damaged Russia’s road-and-rail bridge to Crimea on Saturday, hitting a prestige symbol of Moscow’s annexation of the peninsula and the key supply route to Russian forces battling to hold territory captured in southern Ukraine.
The blast on the bridge over the Kerch Strait, for which Russia did not immediately assign blame, prompted gleeful messages from Ukrainian officials but no direct claim of responsibility.
Russian investigators said three people had been killed, probably the occupants of a car travelling near the truck that blew up.
Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and the 19-km (12-mile) Kerch bridge linking it to Russia’s transport network was opened with great fanfare four years later by President Vladimir Putin, who drove a construction truck across it.
It now represents a major artery for the Russian forces who have taken control of most of southern Ukraine's Kherson region, and for the naval port of Sevastopol, whose governor told locals: "Keep calm. Don't panic."
It was not yet clear if the blast was a deliberate attack, but the damage to such high-profile infrastructure came at a time when Russia has suffered several battlefield defeats and could further cloud the Kremlin's messages of reassurance to its public that the conflict is going to plan.
It also took place a day after Putin's 70th birthday.
The head of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, Oleksiy Danilov, posted a video of the burning bridge on social media alongside a video of Marilyn Monroe singing "Happy birthday, Mr President".
Since the start of the invasion on Feb. 24, Ukrainian officials have made regular allusions to their desire to destroy the Kerch bridge, seen in Ukraine as a symbol of Russia's occupation of Crimea. Ukraine's postal service said on Saturday it would print a special stamp to commemorate the blast.
Russia's Defence Ministry said in a statement that its forces in southern Ukraine could be "fully supplied" through existing land and sea routes, and the Transport Ministry said rail traffic across the bridge would resume by 1700 GMT.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Kyiv's reaction to the destruction of civilian infrastructure "testifies to its terrorist nature".
The Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee said a freight truck had blown up on the bridge's roadway at 6:07 a.m. (0307 GMT), causing seven fuel tanker wagons to catch fire on a train heading for the peninsula on the bridge's upper level.
It said two spans of road bridge had partially collapsed, but that the arch spanning the Kerch Strait, the waterway through which ships travel between the Black Sea and Azov Sea, was not damaged.
'THE BEGINNING'
Images posted by the Russian Investigative Committee showed one half of the roadway blown away, and the other half still attached, but cracked.
Others taken from a distance showed thick smoke pouring from part of the bridge.
An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy posted a message on Twitter saying the incident was just "the beginning" but stopped short of saying Ukrainian forces were responsible for the blast.
"Everything illegal must be destroyed, everything that is stolen must be returned to Ukraine, everything occupied by Russia must be expelled," Mykhailo Podolyak wrote.
Moscow has presented largely Russian-speaking Crimea as a historic and cherished part of Russia and, especially this year, one where Russians could holiday in large numbers, supposedly safe from the war.
On Saturday, hundreds of people who had hoped to drive to Crimea from the Russian town of Kerch were redirected to the ferry port, only to find that high winds were preventing any sailings.
Kirill Stremousov, the Russian-installed deputy administrator of the Kherson region, said the bridge incident "will not affect the army supply very much".
"But there will be problems with logistics for Crimea," he added in a post on social media.
Mykola Bielieskov of the Ukrainian Institute of Strategic Studies, which advises the presidency in Kyiv, said the Kerch bridge was irreplaceable for Russia's invasion forces, and if it were severed, "the whole Russian southern front will crumble quickly and easily".
Although Moscow's forces have seized a stretch of coastal Ukraine linking the Kherson region and Crimea to Russia, Bielieskov said the transport connections there were poor, and that Russia had preferred to send reinforcements to Kherson along the more circuitous route of the bridge into Crimea.
Russian Railways said trains heading for Crimea would be subject to extra checks, and that it was working with the government to find the "best way to deliver goods to the peninsula".
In a video message Aksyonov, the Crimea governor, said he wanted to "assure Crimeans that the Republic of Crimea is fully provided with fuel and food. We have more than a month's worth of fuel, and more than two months' worth of food".
However, the Russian Energy Ministry said on Telegram that Crimea had only 15 days of motor fuel.
The Russian governor of Sevastopol, which has separate territorial status in Crimea as home to the Black Sea fleet, also sought to reassure locals.
"We are not cut off from the mainland!" Mikhail Razvozzhayev posted on Telegram. "Keep calm. Don't panic."

Comment: An impressive intervention in the public domain highlighting that the strength of Israel's democracy is it's diversity of opinion, and the deep longing of many for a just peace with the Palestinians that sets aside absolutist claims on both sides in order to achieve peace, security, prosperity and coexistence.
9 August 2023
Extract 1: The Benjamin Netanyahu-led ultranationalist government is racing towards annexation of the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), a manoeuvre which will not only end any chance of a two-state outcome, but also permanently entrench the daily humanitarian and anti-democratic nightmare that the Israeli occupation has become. During the last six months these methods have spilled into Israel itself, to a point of endangering our own precious democracy – the basis of our proximity to the western world.
To this end, Australian foreign affairs minister Penny Wong’s announcement on Tuesday that the federal government recognises the illegality of settlements under international law is a step in the right direction. While the Labor government is right to break away from previous governments, which failed to implement Australia’s commitment to international law and the two-state solution, Labor has a chance to take a real and decisive step in upholding its values by voting to recognise the state of Palestine at its national conference this month.
Now, more than ever, Israel needs the support of its friends, including Australia, to push back against the efforts of the Israeli government and help us continue striving towards two democratic states living peacefully side by side.
Extract 2: The Israeli right has always dreamed of a sole Israeli sovereign between the Mediterranean sea and the Jordan river. But with the rise in power of ultranationalistic parties in the Israeli body politic, it’s no surprise their dreams of annexation are explicitly spelled out in the government’s coalition agreement. For example, it ensures the government will promote the “exclusive and unquestionable right [of the Jewish people] to all areas of the land of Israel” and commit the government to “promote and develop settlements in all [its] parts”.
Thousands of settler housing units have been approved, millions in the budget have been allocated to develop settlement roads and infrastructure, “unauthorized” settler outposts have gained recognition, and formerly evacuated settlements are being resettled. The flip side of this scale of growth of Israel’s settlement enterprise in this way is the impossibility of a Palestinian state.
Extract 3: This is where Australia’s recognition of the state of Palestine is relevant.
The international community must push back by giving Palestine increasing international legitimacy. Doing so sends a message that they will not stand idly by while Israel’s far right realises its agenda. More states must recognise Palestinian statehood to push back against this impending reality.
Australia has a deep, historical connection to the two-state solution. In 1947, Australia’s then foreign affairs minister was instrumental in pushing through the UN Partition Plan which first called for a two-state resolution to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Australia was the first country to vote in favour of the plan despite outside pressures against it.
More than 75 years later, only half of that plan has been realised. The state of Israel exists and has been internationally recognised; recognising the state of Palestine keeps that decades-old promise.
