Adaine's Furious Fists part 1
Or
Porter takes Adaine under his wing au Day 1
Just a quick story/summary of how things would go if Porter took Adaine under his wing throughout the series. I made a post about how she is the perfect candidate for him with her anger throughout the series and this happened on a whim. Adaine and Porter actually could have had a really interesting story given how their lives actually intertwine a lot if you think about it. So Regardless, read this if you want, I just thought it might be a fun idea.
First day of freshman year porter is scoping out potential prospects in the courtyard not coming up with much.
Puts a maybe down for fabian, he seems more like a grandstander, but he did punch a kid bigger than him without provocation. Still more ropey than strong, but there are dexy barbarians. Gorgug is a likely candidate, he seems soft, but was able to go into a rage and pummel his attacker, Porter could work with that if he had to. But the metal flower and the singing ticks Porter off. Riz is a low maybe to a no, kids being bullied on the first day are usually a good source of rage, but the goblin kid just seems to take it. Fig he doesn't have a chance to see since she sneaks into the teacher's lounge so early. Kirsten is a hard no, religious trauma can bring out a lot of sweet rage, but with Daybreak breathing down her neck it would be hard to get close to her without alerting suspicion. Adaine is a hard no. A tiny trembling high elf wizard with a huge orb she could barely carry, wearing the uniform of the prissy magic school? No way, no how, Porter doesn't even bother to learn her name.
Later that day he sees Adaine have a panic attack over being given detention and he writes her off even harder because it's pathetic. But seeing Fig stand up for her, she's not the ideal barbarian, but she is a young tiefling girl full of rage and Porter see's his opportunity.
Even later he's called to the cafeteria and sees Doreen, Arthur, and Mr. Gibbons dead with corn everywhere. Goldenhorde explains vaguely what happened and tells them to watch. It would be a horrific scene for a bunch of freshman, but Porter has seen and done worse. Still, he doesn't want to talk to Jace right now. The guy is powerful, but too much of a talker for Porter's liking. He knows some of the kids died and were brought back, that's why Arthur and Mr. Gibbons are dead, but little else. He does notice that Doreen's skull is caved in. He thinks of what little he knows about the kids, of the maybes, only fig has a weapon that deals bludgeoning damage so he assumes it was her and now intends to take her under his wing now that she got her first kill.
Once the cops come, he and Jace leave, Porter goes to observe the kids. They all seems broken and beaten, and about to be sick, not surprising. Porter doesn't have any sympathy for them, but he does understand so it's not enough to write any of them off. They're clean enough but the blood on your hands doesn't wash out as easily.
Porter is intent on Fig, because he thinks she's the one who killed Doreen. When Sandra Lynn comes to pick her up he notices that she's an elf, and Fig was dropped off at school by a different elf, yet their daughter's a tiefling. That might explain why she's so angry the first day since she seems like a newly presenting tiefling. Trouble at home can be juicy, especially when fell blood is involved.
Last to leave is the pathetic little high elf girl, you could use her spine like a meter stick with how straight the girl is standing. Porter can understand being sick or scared after your first battle, but he feels like he's within his rights to mock this little elf girl when no one else is around. He has enough of stuck up high elves to deal with as it is, it's good to see them scared.
But speak of the devil, Arianwen fucking Abernant shows up to pick her daughter up and clearly doesn't want to be seen at Aguefort of all places. Porter knows Arianwen and hates her, she's another teacher and their town only has two so they're bound to run into each other from time to time. They're also technically allies through the Shadowcat, who Arianwen is the main liaison. They don't work together exactly, but there's no reason they all can't exchange favors when working on their own evil plans. Arianwen is a cold, stuck up bitch, but she's a powerful stuck up bitch.
The fact that she's hear means the little elf girl is her daughter, now Porter actually feels a bit sorry for the child. It's one thing to be scared after your first battle when you watched people, including your..., 'friends,' might be to early for that since it's the first day, but people your own age die. It's another to be forced to deal with Arianwen afterwards. Porter still finds it pathetic, but is more lenient since he knows what Arianwen is like, especially if the girl is here instead of at the magic school her mother teaches at. that explains the uniform at least.
Then something happens he's too far away to hear, but Arianwen says something to her, likely to berate her. Porter expects the little elf girl to flinch and cower, but to his surprise, she snaps back at her mother despite her fear. It's not much, but despite how afraid she looked only moments ago Porter can see the fury in her eyes when she snaps back at her mother and it's something that Porter wants to see more of.
Later on Goldenhorde/Kalvaxus is given the faculty the full rundown of what happened. Porter knows more than most of his fellow teachers, but when Kalvaxus mentions Doreen being killed he talks about how she was bludgeoned to death by her own ladle. Not Fig's bass like Porter assumed. One of the other members of the faculty, one of the casters that Porter didn't bother to learn the name of, asks which of the kids did it.
Goldenhorde says it was Adaine, for a moment Porter almost asks 'who the fuck is that' out loud. Since he didn't really learn the names of most of them yet. But Tiberia Runestaff, another frigid wizard bitch, chimes in as always 'Adaine Abernant beat Doreen to death with her own ladle? The girl is ten pounds soaking wet and a wizard, why did she use a ladle" clearly angry that one of her wizards would pop their kill cherry with a martial weapon instead of her arcane abilities, but Porter doesn't care.
Learning that Arianwen's daughter was the one who murdered Doreen, and with a ladle is interesting. And moves Adaine from a hard no to a solid maybe in his rage book.

Outstanding antagonists after Junior Year
This post is as much for myself for fanfic purposes as it is for any speculation regarding a Senior Year that may never happen and even if it does would be I think at an absolute minimum three years and more likely 4-5 down the road, but I wanted to round up the known potential antagonists remaining out in the world, roughly ranked in order of known hostility:
Chungledown Bim. Certainly the MOST hostile of opponents, we know he's not dead post-Boy's Night (whenever Boy's Night is supposed to fit into the Quangle) because he's on Fabian's nemesis alert.
Arianwen Abernant. Evidently she has recovered her magic, probably while Cassandra was corrupted into a more Nightmare King-ish state. She was pretty pissed at Aelwyn and Adaine the last time we saw her over the whole death of Angwyn thing; I somehow don't think being chased around Sylvaire by the vand will have improved her mood.
Bobby Dawn. The full extent of his involvement in the Junior Year plot is uncertain, but he sure as hell wasn't helping things. Also some real potential hate between him and the party over the Sandra Lynn thing; while Fig might be gone in a Senior Year I'm going to ignore that for these rankings and in any case Sandra Lynn still lives with Kristen and Adaine regardless, so I think that conflict would be born out. I also think there's a strong case for a clash of pantheons style story going on in the background, and Bobby here would be front and center on the Sol-Helio-maybe Galicaea side.
Kalina. I don't necessarily think Kalina actually IS a traitor to Cassandra the way that Kristen thinks and Ankarna thinks; I almost believe that her turning up at the end of Junior Year was a reaction to them deciding to hunt her, in fact. That being said, while I think Kalina is fully team Cassandra, I also think (and even understand!) that she is most definitely NOT team Kristen, who did let Cassandra kind-of-die and now is splitting her attention. So what's Kalina's play now? I think she's going to try to push for Bobby Dawn to add Cassandra back to the Sol-Helio-Galicaea pantheon, which would be to her a much more stable foundation to keep Cassandra alive on than Kristen.
The Automatons that are going to be hunting Fig. Yes, these are self-evidently a way to excuse that Fig won't be around to help out if there's a senior year and Emily chooses to not play Fig. They're also kind of hilarious, especially since they open up all kinds of questions like 'wait did Sandra Lynn spend her first year of adventuring fighting off killer statues of Arthur Aguefort?' They'd be higher except they're only hostile to 1/6th of the Bad Kids.
Gertie Bladeshield. Also only hostile to 1/6th of the Bad Kids at present, though Cassandra knows if any of them speak up in Kristen's defense she'll probably swear a vow of emnity to them too. Could probably be made up with via a sincere apology, or at least by setting her up with someone.
The Court of Stars and Princess Nara. Now we're into the dubiously hostile territory, because this might not lead to actual conflict, but if there IS a clash of pantheons between the Sol one and the Ankarna-Cass one then the most obvious fight other than Cassandra is over where Galicaea ends up. The members of the Court of Stars we met this season seemed much more, um, I'll use the word chilled out than Angwyn and Kir of last year, but it still feels like a mercurial thing.
Arthur Aguefort. I've been saying for a very long time that the only boss fight that makes sense for a Senior Year IS to have to fight Arthur Aguefort himself; it doesn't even necessarily have to be a 'he's evil' sort of thing, but could just be a 'you're the best party we've had in centuries and I wanna throw down'. He dropped some hints at it in the finale, of course, too!

your post on the extended abernant family and will readings is making me want more on the abernant family as a whole not just adaine, aelwyn, and the parent’s whose names i cant spell if i tried
just adaine and aelwyn having an extended stay in fallinel because word spreads amongst the family that the two nieces/how ever many great grandkids have returned home after so many years
and they just have a small (actually quite large) and impromptu family reunion
where the sisters tell their tales of solace and in return they get a general info dump of their family members they havent seen since they were quite small
and oisin is getting a shovel talk in the corner by their dragon born cousins and after that they start binding over dragon things like their hoards and etc. while the elves catch up
[context]
YES YES YOU GET ME ANON THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING ABOUT
They get a letter from a great great aunt just complaining about how they were in Fallinel and didn't even visit their family except for their useless father??? The fact that they were in PRISON is not relevant, their aunt would've posted bail for them if she'd known! Anyway the whole family is getting together for a reunion and they HAVE to come, obviously, grandma's been asking about them for AGES and don't they want to see everyone and meet their new baby cousins??
Adaine and Aelwyn aren't given the chance to argue, they're just told a time and place (their grandma's castle, the same one she'll eventually leave to Adaine) and invited to bring any friends/partners/children (their family does not understand how old they are). Adaine drags Oisin with and maybe the Bad Kids if she can convince them; maybe even Ivy if she and Aelwyn are a thing. They have to have a powerpoint presentation for everyone going with, covering all the most important people and explaining to Oisin why exactly there's a giant fucking dragon skeleton so that he's not caught off guard or made to feel threatened.
There are. So many fucking elves. And half-elves and silver dragonborns and a scattering of other races from marriages. But just A LOT of elves with very long names who are all speaking different dialects of Elvish and still seem to understand each other somehow?? Adaine and Aelwyn are both MOBBED by family members they haven't seen since they left Fallinel (or even earlier, I could see their parents isolating them from the family) and even by family members they've never met; there's an uncle who left to become a forest hermit and that reunion is the first time anyone's seen or heard from him in 300 years.
They get people picking at their hair and complaining about how much fashion has changed (that cousin still wears their hair in styles that were popular 1,000 years ago), older family bragging about being related to the Elven Oracle, teen cousins wondering why they weren't sent to Kei Lumennura too, their grandma praising them for being so lovely and intelligent and good and how on earth did her useless grandchild (I can't decide if I like Angwyn or Arianwen being the Abernant more) produce such wonderful children, and lots of baby cousins getting shoved into their arms. One of their uncles asks why Adaine didn't just talk directly to their cousin in the Court of Stars about being paid and she's like what fucking cousin?????? They get passed around the reunion for hours and spend what feels like every possible moment of the days (and weeks?) following telling every single family member stories about their adventures and life in Solace; their little cousins play games about their adventures, pretending to defeat the Nightmare King and slay Kalvaxus.
Meanwhile YES, Oisin has absolutely been cornered by a dozen or so silver dragonborns (maybe with a scattering of other colors) to interrogate and threaten him, which would be a lot more effective if they weren't speaking a mix of a Fallinel dialect of draconic that Oisin can only understand every other word of and a variety of dialects of Elvish (which Oisin can barely speak) while Oisin's Solesian dialect of Common is difficult and confusing for the other dragonborns. They eventually figure out a system of communication though and Oisin happily hangs out with them (and away from Adaine's more intimidating family members) until he sees Adaine holding one of her baby cousins, a tiny silver hatchling snoozing in her arms, and he needs to be next to her IMMEDIATELY.

When you think about it (and I do, I do think about it), the Junior Year reveal only makes Arianwen's canon-canon motives in Sophomore Year make no sense.
OK, so Ragh saw Arianwen talking to Jace (interestingly, despite the "they've always been a duo" the three times Ragh mentions seeing Arianwen, she's always only talking to Jace and "someone invisible" (Kalina) but I digress).
By the end of Sophomore Year I think everyone kind of assumes "oh, he ran into them and was like "Hey what you doing here?"". Which I guess could still be the case, but it seems weak. Jace was clearly up to something that night.
Jace needs the crown, to bring back the Nightmare King for the protection and what not. But if canon-canon is to be believed, Arianwen never intended to bring back NMK, the crown was going to the Court of Stars to release Aelwyn. It's only after CoS doesn't release her that Arianwen’s like "fuck you I'll end the world then" (side note: seems really rash. No other course of action? And you did all this research into the Unnamed Goddess for fun? Actually that tracks nvm)
So does she lie to Jace and he thinks she's taking it straight to bring back the Nightmare King? I know Jace may not have great insight but you'd think, idk, he or Porter would have wanted to make sure Arianwen was going to do this very important task. Unless one of them had reason to trust her.
I guess maybe they thought "oh Kalina will make sure Arianwen does what she needs to do" but in a world where the CoS held up their end of the bargain Kalina would have failed, right?
I don't know, maybe I'm thinking too much about Arianwen, but her taking the crown with the intention of going to the Court of Stars already made little sense (after Aelwyn was broken out why would she carry on?). But with the Junior Year reveal added on top of that? You can't tell me Jace didn't know her intentions and he wasn't certain they had nothing to do with the CoS.

Ahh thank you for sending this Janelle! It took me so long to reply because you picked something soft and fluffy and basically none of my WIPs had anything like that. This is the closest I could find, it's from the Jace Hireling AU fic that I've been playing around with, and it's the night before Jace is supposed to leave to go with the Bad Kids.
There's a mention of sex, but nothing explicit.
"You saying you won't notice that I'm not there?"
Porter sat on the bed, watching Jace as he pulled the most practical, durable items of clothing he owned from the wardrobe and tossed them onto a pile. A pair of Mage Hands picked them up and folded them up, stacking them into his oversized adventurer's backpack. “Alright, so, I've got clothes, then I'll need to pack spell components, I'll need my backup focus… Oh, I should probably take some Devil's Honey with me too, just in case they ask about Arianwen.” Jace was murmuring, mostly to himself.
He wasn't looking Porter's way, wasn't doing anything particularly alluring. He wasn't wearing anything particularly revealing, either. Sure, the yoga pants were tight, but most of his body was obscured by the oversized, chunky knit sweater that he'd stolen from Porter, covering him up from his neck to about mid-thigh. And yet. And yet. Porter had never felt so enchanted by his little elf. Maybe it was the knowledge that they were going to be apart for the next few weeks; maybe it was the knowledge that Jace was doing something incredibly dangerous all on his own, just to help Porter's plan succeed. Either way, he couldn't just let this moment pass by. Porter pushed himself up from the bed and crossed the room, wrapping his arms around Jace from behind and planting a kiss on the top of Jace's head. He pressed his face against Jace’s curls, taking a deep inhale, smelling coconut and lilac, and all those ridiculous, expensive products his little elf put into his hair. Jace was such a pampered, pretty little thing; the thought of him roughing it and living out of a van for a couple of weeks straight was honestly kind of funny. Porter almost didn't know how he was going to cope. “Porter, you're making this kind of difficult.” Jace said, unable to walk away from the wardrobe to do anything else with how Porter was holding him. Despite his words, his voice was light, the annoyance clearly just for show. “Shouldn't you be packing too?” “I’m gonna miss you, little star,” Porter said softly. It was more sentimental than they usually were with each other, but even so, it didn't come close to capturing how he actually felt about his little elf. Not that any words ever would. Not that Porter put that much stock in words anyway. They both knew how easy it was to lie. Actions were better, actions were real.
Porter began to nuzzle at Jace's pointed ear, pressing chaste little kisses along the shell. He wasn't chasing the kisses with tongue, wasn't grazing Jace's skin with his teeth. He wasn't trying to arouse Jace just yet. He just wanted to live in this moment for a bit longer. “It's only going to be a couple of weeks. And you're going to be busy with Copperkettle’s lot the whole time. You'll barely even notice I'm not there.” Jace said breezily. It wasn't exactly what Porter had wanted to hear, and he let out an irritated huff.
"Dunno. I might not. We're going to be travelling all round, who knows what kind of big, handsome strangers I might meet. We're only monogamous in Solace, right?" Jace said. Porter knew he was joking, he could hear it in his voice. The words still pissed him off. He'd been trying to say something real, and Jace was just brushing him off, acting so damn cavalier.
"Very funny, Stardiamond." Porter growled, letting go of Jace only to spin him round, to force the little elf to look at him. Jace's eyes were wide, all feigned innocence, as if he hadn't known exactly what he was doing, as if he hadn't been riling Porter up on purpose. "You know damn well you're mine."
He lifted his little elf up and tossed him bodily onto the bed, climbing on after him. As he was fucking Jace, he made sure to suck hickey after hickey onto his neck, marking him up, making it clear to anyone who looked at him that he was claimed. One day Porter wouldn't need to use anything as primitive as bruises, one day there would be something much more permanent on his little elf. But for now, this would have to do.
After they both finished, in the quiet that followed, Jace curled up next to Porter and rested his head on Porter's chest. He ran his fingertips over Porter's stomach, idly tracing little abstract shapes along his skin, and once again, Porter wished he had his own kind of chronomancy, just enough to stretch this moment out, let it last a little longer.
"I am going to miss you, little star." He repeated, needing Jace to know he'd been sincere the first time he said it. Jace looked up at him, an unreadable expression on his face.
“Listen, we've both got our crystals. And I've got Sending. We'll still be in touch. I'll keep you updated on everything that happens.” Jace said, leaning up to give Porter a soft, lingering kiss. “And... I’m going to miss you, too.”

A Moment in the Storm
The squall had swept in off the Waking Sea with all the subtlety of a cudgel, and wasted no time in battering the whole of Denerim with torrential rain and thunder the likes of which only the heat of late summer could provide. Miraculously the old warehouse's roof seemed to be doing a passable job in keeping out the worst of the weather. Yes, the far wall was half collapsed and its cover along with it, but aside from a gust here and there blowing in the odd spatter of damp, it had remained quite comfortable in this quiet corner of its loft.
The walk home they really aught to be taking soon, however -
"Shit."
Wen stirred beside Revka, the heavy scent of old burlap and cotton wafting about the both of them with the motion. Her nose wrinkled as she stared out at the sheets of rain racing over the harbor, mouth set in a bitter curl.
"Well, isn't that just wonderful. We'll both look like drowned rats by the time we make it home now. Drowned, guilty rats."
It was Revka's turn to frown out at the weather, though not for precisely the same grievances as Wen. The night might not have been young any longer, but it should have still been far from finished. She'd hoped they'd have at least another hour or two here before the rain picked up. It had been too long since they'd last been able to slip away to their hideaway, to share a quiet night of chatter over nothing without the weight of home life on either of their shoulders. Where it was just Arianwen and Revka.
Just how she liked it to be.
"Not if we wait 'til morning."
The suggestion was off of her tongue the moment it formed in her head. Wen's eyes flicked to her, looking as though she couldn't decide whether to be more surprised or bemused.
"You're having me on, aren't you," she said, humor winning out and flashing in the toothy grin she shot over a shoulder. "You want to stay out all night. Little miss responsibilities and obligations. What happened to that big day helping your Mam tomorrow you were just whining about?"
Revka's face felt warmer than she'd have preferred it too, though she didn't let that stop her from answering Wen's jab with a huff. "Forget I mentioned it, then."
"Oh come off it, Rev," Wen said, one of the pilfered grapes in the bowl between them plucked up and lobbed at Revka's head. "Don't go all sour on me now! You were just about to prove my Pa right - maybe I am a terrible influence on you."
"Absolute worst there is."
The same grape went flying back at Wen, who caught it easily with a laugh and tossed it into her mouth.
"So?" Revka asked after a moment's silence. She didn't like how much anticipation she could hear in her voice, stomach flopping awkwardly at the sound. "You staying with me or not?"
Wen slumped unceremoniously back to her place in their nest of piled sacks.
"Of course I am," she said as she settled her head into the crook of Revka's arm. An old, comfortable habit that poked at something warm and flitting in Revka's chest. "Just thought you would never ask, that's all. Besides-" Wen gestured out to the storm raging past the crumbling mortar and lumber. "I haven't gotten to watch a storm like this in ages. Can't miss our chance, can we?"
"Right." Revka drew in a long breath, only letting it go when the next peal of thunder roared loud enough to hide the tremble in it. "Wouldn't want to miss this."

Day eight of @chrumblr-whumblr: blood-covered hands! Song prompt: Bridge Over Troubled Waters! Leaning hard towards the comfort side of hurt/comfort, just like the song! No editing! No time to keep writing this preamble! Here wo goooooo!
It just never ended. Smoke and dust, broken concrete and protruding rebars, overturned cars, little flickering fires. Firefighters spraying water, triage teams planting flags, paramedics carrying people to ambulances. And victims. So many broken bodies, so much moaning and keening and sobbing and screaming. Arianwen moved from green flag to green flag, the backpack of supplies hanging loose and heavy on her back. In the beginning, she'd tried to stay in contact with her classmates from nursing school, but the field of rubble was too big, and they'd gotten separated. Green flags meant victims with small to moderate injuries, suitable for a first-year student like Arianwen. She'd patch up their wounds and try to get them to the next hospital bus. Some were panicking and needed to be calmed down. Some were in a daze, from concussion or shock, and needed to be goaded into moving. It was hard work on dangerous grounds, and it just never ended!
Arianwen had just helped a middle-aged woman with a nasty gash on her arm board the bus. As she turned to go back into the scene of destruction, somebody called her name.
"Arianwen!"
It was her big brother, Liam. He was hurrying towards her, as fast as he could hurry while carrying a big, steaming bowl.
"There's a soup kitchen for the rescue teams two blocks east. I thought you'd need something warm."
Arianwen hesitated. She could still hear the cries of the injured, still see so many green flags among the ruins.
"Come on, Rian," Liam said. "You can't rescue anyone if you don't get a break now and then. And some food."
Arianwen let him lead her to a fallen tree. She sat down on the log and let her backpack fall to the ground. Her hands were stained red with blood and grey with concrete dust. She looked at them numbly.
"Are you hurt?" Liam asked.
Arianwen shook her head. "I don't think it's mine."
"All right, let's get you clean, so you can eat. You've got hand cleaning things in your backpack, don't you?"
"Right side pocket."
Liam gave her the pack of wipes, and she mecanically wiped the grime off her hands. Nearby, a team of workers was setting up floodlights against the dusk. Arianwen sipped at the bowl of soup - there was no spoon - and felt the hot broth thaw something inside her chest. Her eyes filled with tears.
"It's so horrible..." she sobbed.
"Shh," Liam said, wiping her tears away tenderly with his thumbs. "It is. But there's still soup. Can I come with you, when you've finished eating it? Maybe give you a hand with those who need help walking?"
"I... guess so. Yeah. Why not. Thank you."
"You're doing good work today, little sister. I'm proud of you. And I'm proud that I can help you."
Liam laid his arm around Arianwen's shoulders. She leaned towards him, soup bowl in hands. All around them, injured people were driven to hospitals, rescue dogs were searching for people buried in the rubble, a steady stream of blankets and water bottles and bandages was coming towards the site... I'm not alone, Arianwen suddenly realized. I'm only a part of it. I can help. But I don't have to do it all alone.
She finished her soup and, finding no obvious place to return the bowl to, left it on the log.
"I'm done. Let's go, brother."

BIOGRAPHY:
Lysander knows little of his family. His mother’s side is small and uncomplicated, with everybody scattered along a small stretch of Wales’ North coast, but the counterpart is entirely unknown to him. He was a curious young boy, with plenty of questions about where his father came from, but received no answer beyond being gruffly shrugged off. It was no real bother to him; Sandy’s focus was easily and quickly swayed, and his childhood was joyful enough.
Early on, his teachers decided amongst themselves that he wasn’t going to top the academic leaderboards, but Lysander still had his strengths. He was a kind, friendly boy, with an aptitude for all things athletic - it wasn’t ideal that he spent most of his time in maths classes doodling footballs in the margins, but he was by no means a bad kid.
It wasn’t until he was eight that the first signs of trouble began to creep in. More and more, bit by bit, Lysander noticed the fighting - it was quiet at first, like they thought he might not notice, but the pretence ebbed away soon enough. Money, it seemed, was always at the heart of it - somebody didn’t have enough, somebody wanted too much, they could get more if they went far away, but why would they give up their homes just for that? Lysander didn’t get an answer to those questions either when his father took him away. He didn’t fight too hard, and neither did his mother, but the near complete silence on the flight to Canada was indicative that maybe he should have.
The house was amazing, and for the most part, Lysander had it all to himself. To a little kid at the time, that seemed pretty amazing - his dad hired him a ride to and from school, and all he had to do was enjoy himself. All of a sudden he could stay up way past his bedtime, eat whatever he wanted, and spend all of his time ignoring his homework in favour of kicking the ball around in the back garden.
His dad started to come home angrier, and they hardly spoke anymore, but that was okay - he was busy, making sure that he could keep that house.
Except they didn’t keep the house. Lysander was 11 by the time the house was foreclosed on, but apparently his dad’s debts had accrued beyond his means. They lost their home, and scrambled to find another, which turned out to be a small apartment in Huntsville.
Once they were all moved in, Lysander and his father had one of the longest talks they’d had in a while. Sandy had to start pulling his weight, he said; there was no such thing as free, and he was always a teenager, so it was about time to learn that. It was his responsibility to work hard at school, keep the place in order, and stay out of sight.
That was fine by him. Lysander made friends, threw himself into sports, and scraped by in his classes for the most part. He was exhausted for them, after all; by high school he needed a part time job too, if he wanted to earn his meals. A lot of them didn’t go too great - he was a particularly nightmarish waiter - but he stuck to it all as best he could.
Not that it was enough. Not for his dad. Bit by bit, the man got meaner, and Sandy’s perception of self warped. He would never quite be good enough.
Lysander’s grades still suffered for it all too, until eventually, he found himself held back in the junior year. It was a frustrating time in his life, and led to the fight that ended any emotional aspect to his relationship with his father, but that just made him all the more determined to turn things around. He studied like his life depended on it that year, and halfway through he was re-granted permission to take part in the school’s soccer team - particularly with talks of scholarships floating around.
Actually getting one was a game-changer. For years, his father had been belittling him here and there, with snide little comments about how a boy like him was made for manual labour - but finally, he had something to prove him wrong with.
Now, Lysander works himself as hard as he possibly can to support himself, hoping that one day, he’ll prove the voice in the back of his head that puts him down wrong.

Prompt H: Home
Now for some Aelwyn redemption for the Dimension 20 Alphabet @dimension20alphabet event! Major spoilers for the end of FH:SY, and maybe a content warning for panic attacks? That all being said, here’s Aelwyn navigating what exactly it means to have a home.
“Welcome home, Aelwyn.”
When Adaine had originally asked her to be her big sister, to come back with the Bad Kids to Mordred Manor, she thought it was a joke. She spent the whole van ride back to Solace waiting for the punchline, but it never came. Adaine only tranced with her head in Aelwyn’s lap, revealing feelings of warmth and affection that she hadn’t acknowledged since they were children, before their parents started grooming her to be the perfect daughter. Aelwyn spent the ride staring ahead with empty, haunted eyes as she recollected every shitty, painful thing she ever did to her little sister just so she could feel better about herself.
So when Adaine whispered those three words in her ear, Aelwyn felt the tears in her eyes as she started to back away from her sister’s loving embrace. She felt Adaine reach out to her, but it was like she felt it second-hand. The panic enveloped her for the moment, and the desire to run from this, all of this, was stronger than ever.
What have you done to deserve this?
At least with us, you know to expect. Affection is the reward.
This is a trick, Aelywn. Don’t be stupid.
She hated how much the voices sounded like Angwyn and Arianwen.
“...in for three, out for six,” she heard an unfamiliar yet paternal voice ask. “Breathe in for three, out for six.”
Simple commands. She could comply with that. Simple tasks, doing what she’s told? It’s all she’s known since she was a toddler. After a moment of following the instructions, she opened her eyes, though she didn’t know when she decided to close them. She met the gaze of who she assumed was Jawbone.
“Hey, kiddo,” he rumbled. “You had a panic attack there. How’re you feelin’ now?”
“F-fine,” she stuttered out, and then frantically glanced around. “Adaine? Where’s Adaine?”
“She’s inside,” he tried to soothe. “She thought maybe you might want some space to—”
Aelwyn didn’t listen to the rest of it. She pushed past him, mumbled an apology for it, and went in search of Adaine. As promised, her little sister was in the front room waiting for her. Aelwyn gave her a quick scan to assure herself that she wasn’t harmed. Adaine looked concerned, but not hurt. That was enough to settle the racing heart in her chest.
“Hey! It’s okay, Aelwyn,” her little sister said, holding her hands out in invitation. “What happened back there? Was there a trigger?”
“What? Trigger? I… I don’t know,” Aelwyn dismissed, taking her sister’s hands and squeezing them tight. “I just didn’t know where you went.”
“I’m sorry, I wanted to give you time and space to breathe. I didn’t know what you needed.”
“Forgiven,” Aelwyn answered quickly. “I’m sorry, too.”
“Panic attacks aren’t worthy of apologies,” Jawbone called out from the doorway. “It’s not a character flaw or a mistake.”
Aelwyn didn’t have the words to answer him. She didn’t know how to explain the deep pit of shame in her stomach. How did explain that she wasn’t raised to act this way without hurting Adaine’s feelings? She knew her sister experienced similar things, but they’d never really talked about it.
“What happened? I said something and you just… switched off,” Adaine murmured.
Aelwyn glanced behind her, and noticed that Jawbone was still listening. “Nothing, I don’t know. It was silly. I won’t let it happen again.”
Adaine made some sort of gesture to send Jawbone away so they could chat. He complied, making some excuse about checking in on Sandra Lynn. Meanwhile, Adaine led her to her bedroom upstairs. Once they were there, they sat face-to-face on the bed.
“You can talk to me, Aelwyn,” she whispered. “No one will hear a word of this if that’s what you need to be able to confide in me.”
Aelwyn hesitated, watching her little sister with wide hopeful eyes before asking, “Where’s the punchline?”
“I’m sorry?”
“The punchline,” she repeated in a frustrated tone. “When will you rip this out from under me? The longer you wait the more cruel it is!”
“Oh Aelwyn,” Adaine said with a pitying sigh, and Aelwyn’s instinct was to immediately recoil. Who was she to pity her? Old habits die hard. Still, she managed to remain still as her little sister continued, “Love isn’t conditional anymore. You deserve nice things like me, and a family, and a home not because of your actions, but because you're my sister. You’re a person, Aelwyn. No one is taking this from you. Mother and Father were manipulative bastards, but that doesn’t have to be us anymore. Never again, understand?”
The tears came before Aelwyn could put up some façade to stop them. In fact, she found that she didn’t want to. Streaming tears turned into heavy hiccupping sobs, the kind that stole your breath and left you gasping for air. Adaine didn’t say a single word, but simply pulled Aelwyn into her lap.
There’s still work left to do, more to repair and patch, but that would come with time. They’d have each other, and neither of them would have to stare down that road to recovery alone. For now, they had a home that they could call theirs. For the present, that could be enough.

Note
for the oc codex prompts: a note/letter found in your OC's pocket, for Arianwen?
Ooooh absolutely chewing on this, thank you!!
(Codex Prompts)
For "a note/letter found in your OC's pocket" (377 Words | No warnings)
A handspan of paper, marked with stains and retrieved from a Warden’s pocket after the death of the Archdemon. Its corners are grey with handling, its creases deep, and it is dated only a month previous. The letter reads:
Wen, I know you’ll never listen to me say it aloud, so I’ve written this down in advance. I did what I had to do, and I guess you did, too. If I were to do it all over, I never would have pushed you like I did. For what it’s worth now, I didn’t know what would happen because of it. Maybe you would never have had to become what you are now. Maybe you would have been taken away to Tevinter like so many of the others. I guess we’ll never know, will we? I am proud of who you’ve become. You won’t believe that, I think, but I am proud of you. I wish I could tell you properly how I felt the first time I held you. Your ma wouldn’t let you go for the first day—couldn’t stand to set you down. Couldn’t bear to stop looking at you. She wanted you more than anything else in the world. When she fell asleep at last, I picked you up and took you to the window where the light was brightest. Your head didn’t even fill the palm of my hand, my Wen. I thought—you could do anything in the world, nothing decided for you yet. There’s so much I would change if I could, but I have always loved you. Whatever you think of me now, I want you to know that. Maybe you still can do anything in the world. If anybody can save us from what’s coming, I think it must be you. I saw the way you fought before. I’m proud of you. Maybe I said so already, but I mean it. I’ve already written more here than you’ll ever read, I know. You have been one of the greatest joys in my life. Maybe you’ll allow an old man this one foolishness. I will not tell you to be strong; you always have been, even without my encouragement. Be well, then, my dear, even if you cannot be safe. -Pa

tag game
I was tagged by @thescorpioracer to answer ten questions and then write ten more!
1) What’s a hobby you’d like to pursue more?
Hmm this isn’t much of a hobby but I got out of the habit of listening to The Magnus Archives and I’d like to get back into it! I’d also like to actually follow through with learning new languages/improving at Spanish and Hebrew.
2) Favorite dish that a parent or relative makes?
Ok this sounds lame BUT my dad has been making bruschetta lately and it is. so good. Mostly it’s just miles better than the half-assed tomato toast I was making before I moved back home and I love it very much
3) What is something popular that everyone seems to like but you don’t?
Oooh. Reality tv maybe?? I just absolutely can’t get myself to care about it, although I’ve tried a few times. I watched a couple episodes of Love is Blind and Tiger King but never finished either. What can I say, I like plots!! Also, Game of Thrones, which I avoided on principle until my parents started watching it, and now I avoid it because I genuinely don’t enjoy it.
4) If you could suddenly just be fluent in a languages you don’t already speak, which would it be?
See I kind of want to say something really difficult, like Russian or Mandarin, even though they’re not the languages I most want to know? Only because I feel like it would be kind of a waste to use this on something like Dutch or German or Italian. I guess I’ll choose Mandarin.
5) A small goal you’d like to accomplish in the next few years?
This question made me realize I don’t have any small goals. Alas. I’m not a very ambitious person. Would love to think of myself as a good person again though!!
6) Right now, would you rather spend a day at the beach or in the mountains?
The mountains for sure because my entire life has been very beach-adjacent and I’m mildly sick of it.
7) Favorite kind of weather?
I’m way too indecisive to answer questions like this. However, when I was little, I hated when it was sunny and raining at the same time, and now I love it. I think I hated it because it made me Feel Things and tbh I don’t think I grew a heart capable of having feelings until I was like seventeen.
8) Is there a different name you wish you had?
Not really, I like Emily. But my parents were considering naming me Charlotte and I do think that it would have suited me well.
9) Favorite kind of jewelry or accessory?
Piercings! I want to get my nose pierced and maybe my eyebrow if I work up the nerve. I already have more than a few in each ear and I Love Them.
10) Is there a book you like that had a really bad adaptation?
I mean. I feel like Percy Jackson is the obvious answer. To be honest, though, I’m usually pretty willing to divorce an adaptation from its source material, and that means I still enjoy some bad adaptations. I really liked the Percy Jackson movie when I was little! I just thought of it as something else entirely. It’s the same with Howl’s Moving Castle; I love the book and the movie but they’re pretty separate in my head. (But I’m thrilled that Percy Jackson is getting the adaptation it deserves<3)
New questions:
1. What’s the last book that surprised you?
2. What media from your childhood influenced you the most?
3. Favorite beverage?
4. What’s something you love but aren’t good at?
5. What’s something you’re good at but don’t love?
6. Describe your ideal personal aesthetic in some detail. (yes this question is very 2016 no I do not care)
7. Is forgiving people easy for you?
8. What’s your favorite kind of puzzle or game?
9. Do you care about birthdays?
10. What’s your favorite tumblr trend of the last year or two?
I’m tagging the last few people in my activity ( @livvyluna @jennyholzertattoo @anabelsbrother @cunumicita @bakctodecember @arianwen and whoever wants to do it) to answer the questions I wrote and then write ten more for the people they tag <3

13 Adventurous Scuba Diving Ladies Share Their Favorite Diving Destinations
When was the last time you explored our world underwater?
To be honest, it’s been a while since I last set foot in a beach destination, let alone strapped on some fins, a mask, and stuck my head underwater. Yet when I stop and think about the fact that 71% of the Earth’s surface is water, I’m reminded that there’s so much of our planet waiting to be explored!
So why am I even talking about scuba diving?
Well, PADI recently reached out to me to help celebrate Women’s Dive Day, which falls on July 15th and is a worldwide celebration of female scuba divers and their love for the ocean. The idea behind this day is to unite divers from around the world to celebrate and honour our beloved female divers, all the while aiming to decrease the gender gap in scuba certification.
Scuba diving is still a fairly male-dominated sport, but women are steadily gaining more interest in it (as they should!). In 2014 35% of all PADI certifications were for females, and in 2016 this number rose up to 37.2%. This may not sound like a lot, but each year they’re getting a bit closer to an equal 50/50 split between male and female certifications, which is pretty cool. PADI is the world’s largest scuba diver training organisation, having issued more than 25 million certifications to passionate divers and ocean advocates across the globe, and Women’s Dive Day is just one example of how this powerful group can unite as one under a worthwhile cause.
I may not be a scuba diver myself (yet!), so instead, I thought I would reach out to some adventurous scuba diving ladies (a.k.a. real-life mermaids!) and ask them to share their favourite diving destinations around the world.
Let’s dive in!
Kristin of Camels and Chocolate
Sipadan, Borneo
Nearly a decade ago, my husband and I went on our honeymoon to Borneo for three fantastic weeks of underwater exploration. And while, of course, we tackled Sipadan—which was fabulous with its schools of nurse sharks, turtles by the dozen and torpedoes of barracuda—it was actually the cornucopia of macro life at the sites around Mataking Island and elsewhere in the Celebes Sea that really got me excited about the destination. A bonus? I got to see my first ever cuttlefish, which for a diver who primarily gets her fins wet in the Caribbean, was a dream come true!
Rika from Cubicle Throwdown
Roatan, Honduras
My favourite dive site is in Roatan, Honduras. It’s called Rockstar and is on the north side of the island, between Pristine Bay and Palmetto Bay. Rockstar has incredible topography – there are huge cracks to swim through, pinnacles, a vertical wall full of crevices and a shallow plateau teeming with colourful soft coral (a good place to spot seahorses, nudibranchs and other macro critters!).  The wall drops down past 100 feet and I have spied spotted eagle rays, sharks and moray eels all around it. There’s usually a pretty good current moving past, so there are often massive schools of creole wrasse hanging around the dropoff. The best part about Rockstar is that there’s only one dive shop near it, which means you’re almost always the only divers at the site!
Sarah of Girls That Scuba
Tiran Island, Egypt
I’ve been lucky enough to dive in a lot of destinations around the world, but I always come back to Egypt as the diving – for me – is the best in the world. I love all the dive sites in Tiran Island, Sharm el Sheik as you’ve got a great mix of corals, fish and the big stuff; I’m talking sharks, mantas and dolphins, and in the summer the water is almost HOT!
Arianwen of Beyond Blightly
Komodo, Indonesia
My favourite dive destination has to be Komodo. It’s where I did my divemasters so I know it better than any other underwater spot on the planet. There are so many reasons why it’s the best: the diversity of marine life, the challenging currents, the visibility, the calm surfaces, and the variety of dive sites all add to its charm. While many of the dive sites around Komodo require a high level of preparation and concentration, the one I loved visiting the most was Siaba Besar. Frog fish and flamboyant cuttlefish could be found in the sand, while huge octopods, numerous turtles and sting rays, and sometimes even sharks preferred the coral islands and its passing channel. This was also the perfect spot for watching the sunset from our liveaboard.
Nadine of Hey Nadine
Speyside, Tobago
Speyside is where I got PADI certified. I had done about 5 beginner dives before then and finally decided I was ready for the real deal. It is a tucked away beauty on the Atlantic coast in the Caribbean, where you dive out of a private bay and around the surrounding islands. I saw tonnes of marine life and all sorts of turtles, manta rays, eels, sharks, coral, you name it. A great mixture of beginner and advanced dive spots, plus they do night diving.
Christy of Ordinary Traveler
Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean
I received my PADI certification on the beautiful island of Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean. I’m told I’ll never top Bonaire with its 100 foot+ visibility and thriving sea life. This island has been voted the Best Shore Dive Destination for 22 years in a row, so there’s no need for a boat!
Kia of Atlas and Boots
Daphne Island, Galapagos
Diving at Daphne Island in the Galápagos was something I’ll remember forever. At one point during the dive, I was completely surrounded by a large orb of black-striped salema fish. A sea lion burst through the wall of the orb, circled me gracefully, then darted out through the ceiling. The memory of it has a surreal quality, as if I dreamt it or saw it in a James Cameron movie. That’s what diving does though: it opens up an incredible new world.
Christine of GRRRL TRAVELER
Similan Islands, Thailand
Taking a dive liveaboard around the Similan Islands in January is a dive experience I’ll never forget. It was my first time doing a liveaboard and covering many dive sites, daily. The varied underwater terrain of the Similan Islands was exquisite, as was the variety of fish. From the large granite boulders of Elephant Head to the colourful coral and variety of fish at East of Eden or doing a night dive at Anita’s Reef (it wasn’t as scary as I thought!), there was much to explore. The Similan Islands are definitely a bucket list visit if you’re diving in Thailand.
Laurel of Monkeys and Mountains
Protea Banks, South Africa
I love diving with sharks – without a cage in South Africa. You never know who is going to show up. I was fortunate enough to dive with Oceanic Blacktips and a couple of shy Bull Sharks on several dives. Getting up close to sharks is such a privilege and gives you the opportunity to see another side of these feared creatures.
Richelle of Adventures Around Asia
Malapascua, Philippines
Diving with the thresher sharks in Malapascua is one dive I’ll definitely never forget! Rather than swimming around a reef, divers descend off the side of an underwater cliff to a small area where you kneel behind a rope. For the entirety of the drive, you watch and wait for thresher sharks to suddenly appear out of the deep. Trust me, this sight is more than worth the 4 am wake-up call!
Kristin of Be My Travel Muse
Komodo, Indonesia
Even after 150 career dives in dozens of different sites, my favourite dive site remains Komodo National Park in Indonesia. The massive schools of fish and the abundance of so many species, gorgeous corals, and especially the Manta rays, make this such an amazing place. As if that weren’t amazing enough, it was really the Mandarin fish that I saw there on a night dive coupled with the amazing stars I saw when I surfaced that put it at the top of my list. The Komodo Dragons are pretty cool, too!
Katie of Two Wandering Soles
Koh Tao, Thailand
Scuba diving has always been a dream of mine — ever since I was young and my dad told me stories of scuba diving in shipwrecks when he was a young man. Instead of following in his footsteps though and diving in the frigid lakes of Minnesota, I had my first scuba experience on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. It’s safe to say I was hooked after the first dive! Eventually, I went on to get my certification while travelling in Thailand, and I ended up staying a week longer than I expected on the island of Koh Tao (oops!) to get my advanced certification. I loved learning in Koh Tao because dive courses are super affordable, the water is warm and great for beginners. Plus, there is so much beautiful and diverse ocean life relatively close to shore! Koh Tao is a great place for beginners to get their toes wet (sorry for the pun!) and learn a lot while also experiencing epic dives. I am still such a newbie in the world of scuba, but it has been so much fun connecting with other men and women who are passionate about diving and hearing their experiences and advice. I’ve already been planning my dream scuba trips to places like Egypt and the Similan Islands in Thailand. And who knows, maybe someday I’ll even dive in those chilly Minnesota lakes in search for the wrecks my dad told me of long ago.
Alesha of Nomadasaurus
Dos Ojos, Mexico
My most memorable dive site of all time is Dos Ojos in Mexico. This cenote (a cave-like sinkhole) has two connected chambers and is filled with crystal clear fresh water. Sunbeams come in through holes in the earth giving the whole place a beautiful light. It was the most magnificent dive I have ever done, as well as the longest at 67 minutes.
If you came looking for some diving inspiration, there you have it! Now you, too, can join in the celebration. Locate a Women’s Dive Day event near you and celebrate the fearless females in your life! Check out more inspiring stories from PADI women here: http://ift.tt/2ty5I2g
Have you ever tried scuba diving? If you have, what was your favourite dive site? If you haven’t, what’s holding you back?
This post was written in collaboration with PADI to help celebrate Women’s Dive Day.

Soooooooooo Arianwen/Jace first date? please?
Oooh, yes been thinking about this a lot (on that four hour bus journey I had yesterday).
So, it wasn’t supposed to be a date.
I imagine they met at some conference on teaching experimental magic bs that Jace 100% did not want to be at but someone from Aguefort had to go and he drew the short straw. And Arianwen has to give some presentation and she has the most charisma of anybody he’s ever seen from Hudol (read: any charisma) and, well, she’s not bad looking so he finds her at the hotel bar to have a little fun.
And Arianwen is sexually frustrated. I think it’s both a High Elven thing in that having a sex drive is much too much and not dignified in anyway, but also a “women shouldn’t want sex, but should just submit when it’s requested” kind of thing. She wants to fuck, but she knows that is so frowned upon.
Jace is not the first one night stand that Arianwen has had at this kind of thing. The guys she’s had have been at best a kind of four out of ten, which is still quadruple the amount that Angwyn is. Jace is on another scale. It’s from that conference that Arianwen learns a new definition of the phrase "practical caster".
But it’s just a one night stand and neither of them expect anything else to come from it. It does keep Arianwen entertained in the bath and when Angwyn is working late for months but it’s nothing.
Except it’s an itch that Arianwen just can’t scratch. So months later she Sendings Jace to suggest they get drinks in Bastion City. And Arianwen fully intends for this to be a single drink and then he’ll make a suggestion, they’ll go back to a hotel room and he’ll fuck her brains out and that itch will be scratched. Because she absolutely has him down as a fuck boy who is not going to get through 15 minutes before things start to go that way.
Jace on the other hand is very much hoping and aiming for the night to end in a hotel room, but he figures this is some intelligent and dignified Hudol professor so he’s at least going to have to go through the whole date night thing first. So he’s being polite and asking her about stuff and at one point he asks something like “oh if you could research anything what would it be” and oops, you just unlocked Arianwen Talks About Her Special Interest.
Arianwen does not get to do this often and will jump at the opportunity. Jace has never seen and adult this passionate about magic (about anything really) pretty much ever. And he just lets her talk because it’s infectious. He has no idea what she’s talking about after five minutes but she’s clearly so excited by it and he’s smitten.
By the time Arianwen realises she’s been let to go on about this for more than ten seconds, thirty minutes has passed.
So they’re drinking and talking and Arianwen isn’t drunk-drunk, but she is tipsy and giddy and ok, maybe she’s a little more drunk than she thought she was because she’s the one actually suggesting they go back to the hotel room she’s booked (which she would never do sober because it’s such an immature horny teenage thing for a woman to ask for sex).
Jace reads her as being way more drunk than she is though and he is not going to have sex with an inebriated woman (partially because of his mother) but he does take her back to her hotel room and leaves a note with his crystal number on it so she doesn’t have to waste spell energy if she wants to get in touch again.
They're a mess and I love them.

15 Lines
This was originally a tag game, but I had so much fun doing it for Emma that I decided to do everyone else too haha. If you would also like to post 15 lines of dialogue from a character, consider this a tag to do so! Just tag me back so I can see them too c:
I've listed the fics I pulled from at the end in case anybody is curious.
For Arianwen Tabris:
“Tabris. Not that it matters. Come on, Crow. We’ve miles to go yet.”
“I will keep my hands and knives to myself if you will.”
“Well. That was…nice. I’m going to check the perimeter.”
“I need to know all I can. Show me, if you want to.”
"Yes, yes. You’re a friend. Of course I remembered.”
“If I want to get myself vaguely damp and uncomfortable, I’ll go sit by the hound and let him lick my face.”
“No—don’t tell me another story. Thank you; you didn’t have to do this, and you did. That means something.”
“I wish I’d known how little time I would have with my mother. Or—or with anyone. Maybe I would have appreciated it better while I had the chance. Maybe it’s a gift, to know how little time we really have. Not many people get that.”
“She taught me everything I know. I tried to forget it after she died. My body remembered for me. I’m grateful to it.”
“You’re always joking. Always talking! Well, talk to someone else. I don’t have anything to say and I don’t have time for your jokes.”
“You’re right. I don’t think I hate you at all.”
“I am not going to ask you to steal for me. If I want someone’s jewels, I will take them myself. You can stay behind and cover my tracks.”
“Are you leaving or not? Wouldn’t want you to be late for your ship.”
“I was going to let him have you. Or, if he allowed it, I was going to take my time. Fortunately for you, you’ve made me very, very angry. This’ll be quick.”
“I’d do worse to keep you safe.”

hello. ive (finally) had another jace thought.
jace goes on the sophomore year quest. he's in leviathan, slowing down the bad kids to help arianwen as much as possible. and who does he see?
kir and angwyn, trying to kidnap adaine.
jace cares more about adaine than the other bad kids and has a role to play here. but angwyn will tell arianwen what he's doing when he realizes who it is. and maybe jace has some hangups about fighting his sister.
adaine still gets taken away and jace knows exactly where she'd be. he's not in touch with his family, but he's not stupid. he knows where his sister works. the court of stars is a *bragging* right in his family.
and jace is fine with cutting off his family to get adaine back. but then there would be questions. why he knows of this place, why he's so angry at angwyn and kir. why he cares so much.
and jace tries not to unravel as it feels like his past is unweaving itself just to all come together at this moment.
and he saves adaine and aelwyn. of course he does. but he has to send aelwyn off to her mother, after a year of torture from his sister and her own father. and he has to keep up more charades.
but it's all a bit tiring, isn't it? to have everything that you ever put emotional stakes into come as a frenzy. and you wish you could just be with arianwen, but you're in too deep and you're trying to save the family that doesn't know you're trying to keep together.
and it's tragic, being jace stardiamond. but hasn't your life always felt that way?
Ah! You read the last chapter!
Kir, not just his sister but the replacement. The one his father could be like "look how good a relationship I have with my wife. Yes, we are having a third child."
I think after the Row and the Ruction the rest of the bad kids are like "oh, that was far more personal for you than it should have been, wtf". And there's obviously no way he's going to reveal why he wants Angwyn dead yesterday, but he is considering telling them about Kir.
And then they go to Kei Lumennura and Telemaine obviously recognises the embarrassing step child of one of the Muses. Telemaine doesn't do gentle and is like "oh, you brought with you the Elemmire that was created beyond these immortal shores. If the muse finds out your have brought her humiliation with you... that would be bad..."
Jace does come clean about that. (I imagine he's not on Adaine retrieval team, so he doesn't get to see Kir banished twice but takes some joy in hearing about it afterwards).
And yes it is very tragic, and I will say again that I think whatever Jace was doing during the Spring Break in canon would actually be infinitely better for him than being along for the trip.
The other side of things would be kind of funny.
You're fresh out of university, going on your first real big mission as part of the Court of Stars to retrieve the Elven Oracle from a pirate city of all places. And who should you run into but your brother.
Your brother, who you have only seen a handful of times and have learned to be ashamed of. How the fuck does this guy know the Elven Oracle? Mother and Father are going to go insane when they find out.
And he's trying to stop you because of course he fucking is. That sounds like the Jacin your parents (and more your older siblings) have told you about. But he's not a wizard and you're better than him (You have to be. You were quite literally born to be better than him. If you can't beat him, your parents will cut you off).
Once you get Adaine to Fallinel, she's just as difficult as Jacin is (is it a Solace thing? Does he have some kind of relationship so he's rubbing off on her?). But you're feeling cocky, push the button for the way of pain, and ruin your own life in the process. Maybe you're more like Jacin than you thought.
