it's finals season which means i'm writing sooo much fanfic. i'm working on three (consistently but poking around all of them) rn, the twin au which i've posted about before, the pike au which is so depressing no one wants to hear about it, and the azgeda!clarke au which i posted about once and got no notes which means everyone wants more info. i just wrote this scene for it and i think it's probably the funniest thing i've ever written. spoilers for a fic that will likely never be written lol. clarke was raised by the ice nation so speaks fluent azgedasleng which is in italics.

“She’s in there,” One of the guards pointed to the door both groups were standing around. 

Clarke nodded and for a moment let herself hope, she clenched her hand around the doorknob and imagined that it was Lexa in there, waiting for her. 

Costia smiled as they made eye contact. She sat casually at one end of a long table, boots kicked up. 

“What the fuck do you want?” Clarke asked, plopped down at the other end of the table. Abby shut the door, and leaned against, eyes narrowed at Costia.

“I am just so delighted to see this,” Costia said. “It’s better than I could’ve dreamed. I mean, you? Wanfisa, healer of death, azgedakru supremacist, Lexa’s biggest weakness, now here? Traitor to Lexa and Azgeda? Wearing the clothes of the mountain? It’s almost too good to be true. You even brought your real mom to meet me too, that’s so cute.” 

“My real mother is dead,” Clarke said quietly and Costia’s face went blank. 

“I did hear that. And I’m sorry. She didn’t deserve that.”

Clarke nodded. “What is it you want, Costia?” 

“Mostly this, revenge,” Costia shrugged. “But unfortunately, I’m not here just for pleasure.”

Clarke crossed her arms. 

“Skaikru is fucking terrible at this. Strategies, negotiations, plans. If we lose this war Lexa’s gonna get deposed and we might not have a big enough force like this again to take on the mountain. They need to shape up.”

Clarke nodded. “So, you need me to…” 

“Come back to the war table,” Costia said and stood. Clarke raised her eyebrows as Costia made her way over. “I might hate your guts but you’re smarter than your mother by a longshot. Or any of her people. We need you to win this war.” 

“Lexa won’t be happy with that.” 

“Unfortunately,” Costia said, “she will.” Clarke’s breath caught and she stood. “Consider this a chance to prove your loyalty to the coalition. Maybe even to azgeda.” 

Abby cleared her throat and stepped forward. “Clarke doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone.” 

“The sky people have killed hundreds of innocent trikru, and Clarke is the daughter of their leader. She has a lot to prove,” Costia said. 

“She doesn’t need your people,” Abby said. 

Costia raised an eyebrow at Clarke. “I have been taking your place not just at the war table, you know. In a lot of respects.”

Clarke scoffed. “Impressive. Desperate whore goes after a heart broken woman. It’s never happened before, they’re gonna be talking about you at bonfires for generations.” 

Costia slapped her, hard, across the cheek. “You kiss your skaikru mother with that mouth azas? Lexa didn’t sound all that heartbroken when my fingers were curled inside her.”

“Away from my daughter, now,” Abby got between them. Clarke rolled her eyes and ignored the stinging on her cheek. 

“You’re a skilled hunter Costia, I can’t deny it. Maybe one day you’ll even manage to find some dignity.” Clarke said. 

“Better a failed hunter than a failed healer,” Costia said. “I’ve never hurt her the way you have.”

Clarke thought about returning the slap, but Abby grabbed Costia’s arm. “You’re out of here. Now.” Clarke stayed behind as Costia was escorted to the border and Abby soon returned, arms crossed. “You going to tell me what that was?”

fe7 has a lot of story problems and plot holes don't get me wrong but so many of the complaints people have with them can just be solved with “it was 20 years ago. why would they tell them every single thing that happened in their life.”

I've been here at the Lin Kuei Temple for less than six months. While it hasn't always been easy, it's been quite the learning opportunity for me. While all members are expected to do at least basic combat training, my extra duties in the healers' halls left me precious little free time. “The Saturday Interview: I Am In Eskew Podcast” —Recovered

The podcast is called I Am In Eskew; it’s a horror / weird fiction show delivered as a series of dispatches from a vaguely Central European city.

Eskew is a place that is, both spatially and psychologically, off-kilter. The streets wind too far in on themselves, the stairs climb too high, and both buildings and inhabitants can act in peculiar, obsessive, or frightening ways. And every episode we follow the narrator, David Ward, a kind of semi-unwilling immigrant to the city, as he finds himself stumbling into new aspects of Eskew. As for me, I’m a writer in London, working in digital media for the charity sector; I’m writing and narrating Eskew sort-of-anonymously. Not for any kind of grand scandalous reason, but because I think it adds to the fun and helps to keep the conceit alive a little bit.

Ah...that explains why I couldn’t find your name when I was researching for this interview. I thought my skills were slipping! I think it’s very interesting that Eskew focuses on horror based around spaces and buildings. Is this something of particular interest to you?

Yes, definitely! I think there’s a rich ream of horror, from The Haunting of Hill House to Ghostwatch, that delves into the idea that certain places can simply go wrong - and once these bad environments have been established and ostracised by society, they can’t be exorcised. They simply keep accruing power through the individual stories that play tragically out in their shadow.

I mention a real-life example of that kind of bad architecture in one episode; the Pope Lick Bridge in Kentucky, a place that looks and feels so sinister that it developed its own local folklore about a goat-man who attacks people who stray too close to the edge - and which has ended up resulting in deaths as visitors peer over the side trying to get a peek at the monster.

I find this kind of stuff fascinating, because it plays into my own paranoia about environments, and my dislike of ghost stories with explicably human antagonists. Like David says in the first episode, people aren’t frightening. Places are frightening.

If I’m sitting alone at home on a dark and stormy night, and I glance nervously up towards the bedroom doorway, my fear is not that my house is being haunted by a spirit called Mabel who died in the 19th century at the age of fourteen and is constantly seeking her favourite teddy bear...because all of these details both humanise her and make her ridiculous.

My fear is that there will be something standing in the doorway, because the doorway is where things come to stand.

Because unoccupied spaces, in our imaginations, must find something to fill them.

Could you describe some of your creative influences?

Thomas Ligotti is probably the writer I’m trying to crib from the most. Not so much in terms of his pessimism (or his love of puppets as a horror motif, which I can’t really get behind), but I see him very much as someone who bridges the gap between American horror and European absurdism. Some of my favourite stories of his - The Town Manager, Our Temporary Supervisor, The Red Factory - are hilarious as comedies! They’re very much scathing satires on our inadequate human response to the inexplicable and awful.

Junji Ito is also a big influence, in particular, his masterpiece Uzumaki: a collection of short stories about a town that’s driven mad by the symbol of a spiral. The brilliance is in the inventiveness with which he builds an anthology of horrors, with variety and with mounting awfulness, while playing on that simple motif.

I see Ito’s work as very much in the spirit of some of the most classic horror of all; Ovid’s Metamorphoses, where the threat comes not from an external monster, but from our own bodies and minds, transforming at the whim of cruel, fickle and obsessive gods...which feeds into a lot of what I’m trying to do with Eskew!

I usually try and avoid thinking about Lovecraft as an influence, even though David is clearly an obsessive, neurotic first-person narrator in the Lovecraft/Poe mould. I think there’s a lot of baggage around what constitutes ‘Lovecraftian’ fiction, and I didn’t want to set up false expectations by referencing him (like the idea that there might be some monstrous cosmic intelligence behind it all).

I really enjoy Lovecraft too, especially something like “The Shadow Over Innsmouth.” I think the idea of monsters living in the sea near the town and the strange, inexorable link the townspeople have with them makes it a lot creepier than something like “The Call of Cthulhu.”

Yeah! I think the elements in Lovecraft that have made him so franchise-friendly (these brilliant alien races and gods) have eaten away at the edges of Lovecraftian horror, bringing it closer to something that can be quite kitsch, even a kind of steampunk pastiche at times. With Eskew, I’m trying to keep to something I see in Ito, or in Ligotti, where any antagonists, whether human or otherwise, are only symptoms of something worse, something that’s simply a force of nature.

I see the city of Eskew as being a bit like a literal cancer in that sense - a highly complex structure where some of the cells (or in this case streets, art galleries, citizens...) have started to lose their original sense of self and are obsessively spiralling off in other, destructive directions...

What made you decide to do I Am In Eskew as a podcast, rather than as a graphic novel or book?

Honestly, it’s a lack of talent in the first instance, and a lack of discipline in the second!

Writing it as a podcast was my partner’s idea (she’s also the occasional voice of Riyo, an investigator looking into David’s disappearance, and she copy-edits every episode with me) - I knew I wanted to write a series of horror short stories based around the theme of urban isolation and weird architecture, but I was really struggling to get started.

She suggested that recording it as a podcast would force me to keep to a schedule, and hopefullyit might even give me some audience feedback to keep me excited about the project.

So it was a pragmatic choice, but it’s one I’ve really come to be thankful for! I think the medium is perfect for bare-bones, atmospheric horror storytelling (Knifepoint Horror is probably the best example of that ‘lonely voice whispering in your ear’ kind of fiction), and there’s an incredibly welcoming, friendly, mutually-supporting community of listeners and creators online.

Once the podcast is complete, I think I’d definitely like to look at compiling all of the episodes, editing and improving them, and turning it into a full-length written anthology. I’ve definitely made a few continuity slip-ups along the way that I’d like to correct, apart from anything else.

I’ve enjoyed Riyo’s episodes too, especially now that she’s directly looking into ‘hostile environments’. I feel like the contrast in tone and narrative style help to strengthen the series overall. Do you intend for the story of I Am In Eskew to have a specific ending in the future? If so, have you decided on the arc of the story?

I think David’s story (and Riyo’s) needs to be a finite one, definitely. In my experience, most successful protagonists in serial horror tend to be investigators, or monster-hunters. That choice of profession makes them witnesses to the story, rather than victims - effectively, they’re exempt from the psychological cost of whatever happens.

With David, I very much wanted to avoid that sense of safety; I want the horror to keep taking its toll on the character, episode after episode - which means that eventually he does need to find some kind of resolution!

Otherwise that psychological cost starts to seem fraudulent, and the whole thing turns into a predictable game of ‘David sees something horrible, then miraculously escapes at the last second’ week after week.

So I do know how the finale is going to play out; it’s really just a question of how many more stories I can reasonably invent for the show, without things starting to feel stretched, before we get there.

Mind you, it’s been established that there are recordings from Eskew that have gone missing, so it doesn’t need to end, even if it ends…

Do you have a favourite episode of I Am In Eskew so far?

I really like Episode 3: Excavation. A mysterious digging sickness takes hold in Eskew, with citizens tearing their own hands to pieces just to get into the ground - and in retaliation, a religious cult starts to form, extolling the virtues of the sky and constructing a grand tower.

It’s not necessarily the best-written episode structurally, and definitely one of the crudest in terms of recording quality, but it was the first episode where I felt I was pushing the boat out towards the kind of outrageous, absurdist horror that I really wanted to be writing, where normal human behaviour was just being given a couple of extra screw-turns towards something awful and monstrous.

It was also the first episode where I really saw a few people begin to respond on message boards, so that was really reassuring to me - when it first went out, I was petrified that I’d gone too weird to sustain anyone’s interest.

I tried to pick a favourite episode in preparation for this interview, but I honestly couldn’t narrow it down past five or six. If I really had to pick, I’d probably choose Illumination - the episode about the sinister and compulsive call of an old railway bridge. Are ideas like this based on real examples?

That example definitely is - it’s based on a railway bridge about a minute’s walk from my house! I love that kind of very modern ruin; old brick stacks stood out in the open, arches filled with ivy, graffiti in a place that seems impossible to reach...

There are a few other specific London inspirations (I based the Fish Market on Spitalfields Meat Market, for example), but with Eskew as a whole, I was thinking specifically of hillier cities in Western and Central Europe: Budapest, primarily, but also Lisbon (the trams and cobblestones), maybe a bit of Rome...

I’m used to flat English cities without any kind of panorama, so I find it a ceaselessly astonishing thing to be lost in a city’s streets and suddenly find myself up high, staring down over a sea of winding streets and rooftops...

How do you feel having wrecked people’s appreciation of AA Milne’s poem Disobedience by highlighting how deeply sinister it is?

I’ve actually been driving myself wild trying to decide if that poem is just a nonsense rhyme celebrating bossy children, or if there’s a class-snobbery thing going on (James James Morrison’s mother puts on a golden gown, and goes to the end of the town...does she get robbed there? Is the end of the town so unsafe because that’s where the low-income people live?)

You may have a point there about class. After whatever happens to her happens, the King himself gets involved with a reward. Clearly, she’s a lady with connections! Could you describe your writing process?

My writing process is very much informed by necessity - I commute in and out of London every day and don’t have a lot of free time, so I have to do most of my drafting while standing upright in a crammed train carriage!

Which may not be ideal, but on the other hand, if you’re writing a podcast about the horror of urban life, there’s no better place to find inspiration than a crowded, sweaty, angry Underground train filled with blank faces...

How long does it take you to put an episode together, from first word to the finished product?

I’m very quick; I usually sketch out the episode concept well in advance, then take about a fortnight to draft it and edit. Recording and audio-editing happens very speedily, again out of necessity, on the weekends! I try and devote a day apiece to each.

Turning to the technical side, what do you wish you’d known about creating a podcast at the very beginning?

There’s still an enormous amount that I don’t know! When it comes to even simple audio editing, I’m learning all the time. I very much am still just a schmuck in his living room, talking into a handmade sound booth on his days off - which is the beauty of podcasting, I suppose.

But I’d probably give my earlier self some very common-sense advice like...

...be brave. Stick to a schedule. Know the signs of burn-out. Listen to other people’s work in the medium before you dive in. Stay hydrated so your mouth doesn’t make those disgusting wet sounds when you’re trying to talk. Never forget that this should be fun, above anything else.

What motivates you to keep producing episodes?

Honestly? Seeing that it’s connecting with people. Spooking people. Entertaining people. That means everything.

Hey, same anon who asked about the writing! I think I would like to start, but I have never really been good with writing... uh ever! Lol so (1) how do you, I guess, learn to use the words that you do and to make it not sound super cheesy and (2) keep it original without subconsciously taking from other great writings that you've probably read before?💜

It is never too late to start writing :) I know you might feel that way and that so many people are already so ahead of you, but writing is a long and arduous journey at times and we all take our own pace. I’m glad I used to be hilariously terrible at writing so I can see how much I have improved since back then. We all have to start somewhere. 

Writing is about your taste. And the only way to learn how to write is to read. When you read, you learn what kind of writing you like, what kind of stories you enjoy etc. Your writing is a cultivation of your taste, and that’s when you start to develop your personal style. With every sentence you write, your skills further, and you become more acquainted with your style and how you like to use words.

1.) As for “cheesy” writing, well, that concept is subjective. Everyone has a different definition of what cheesy writing is and what they don’t like. For me, its ooc (out of character) fics that are very surface-level. So when it comes to my fic writing, I want my characters to be as close as possible to canon and I want underlying themes, motifs, and plot elements so there’s stuff glimmering below the surface of the piece. You have to identify what you think is cheesy so you can avoid it in your writing. And if you’re not sure if it is, I highly recommend reading what you write out loud. See if you like the way it sounds. It’s also a great way to find obscure mistakes! If you like what you have, others will too :) Once you know your “cheesy” tendencies, you are above them. 

2.) I know I’m about to blow the lid on the whole thing and blow everyone’s cover but writers are thieves. After all, there is no such thing as an original thought. We all get our ideas from somewhere and get inspired somehow. We steal details from real life, observing the world around us, and those insights can be found in what we write. We pepper in a part of ourselves in our work and that alone makes it unique. What we read, what we see and hear and all that we perceive  lingers in our minds inspires our words. 

I’ll show you an example of a time I was a “thief” in DNTTA so you can see what I mean:  

“He tried to capture the bliss on your face and the harmony of the Earth beside and above you, but his sketch was uncharacteristically restrained, as if reluctant to focus, lest he awaken the softer, slumbering animal of his body.” — This was a nod to Mary Oliver’s poem, Wild Geese, with the line: “You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.” Oliver is talking about following your heart and allowing yourself to be human. I was inspired by that line and gave it my own take, alluding to the softer and gentle nature of Arthur that is hidden and seemingly has no place in his world. There is a line between inspired and directly copying. The difference is in making it yours, and the key is in being aware of that, as well. 

If you’re worried that your writing is sounding too similar to something someone else wrote, think about why you want to write it, what goal you want to accomplish, and how you can make it different. There’s bound to be run-ins with other people’s plots and such. When writing, you’re working on your idea. Nurture it, let it grow into its own thing. It will become individually yours because it is a product of your intellect, experiences, and your unique skills that are exclusive to you.

Regardless of the grandness or unoriginality of your idea, its your skill that matters. Its all in how you execute it.

These are my personal opinions, writing has a different meaning to everyone, I’m just giving my advice so I hope this is at least slightly helpful and not complete nonsense! A Proper Postmortem

Maybe?!  Heck if I know how to actually format a good post but let’s try.  As game development went on for almost four years, this is probably gonna be long... and also give away basically the whole game oops!  Read on with caution.

Sometime around July 2014, a month after the initial release of my first game, my room was being remodeled and I was stuck with nothing for free time but a garbage laptop I could do anything on, an old flip phone, my sketchbook, and my 3DS.  So beyond playing an obscene amount of Animal Crossing and Tomodachi Life, I at some point went “hey, what if I made a second game starring the kids.”  So I started trying to plan it out!  And it went

absolutely nowhere that I intended it to go!!!

For instance, this is the very first page of sketches.  This squirrel was supposed to be really important.  It’s not.  I don’t even KNOW what’s up with that duck.

A thing I like to think about before I set off making any of the story, assets, or scripts for my games tend to be themes and motifs.  And I kept circling back to a very important, very personal “theme.”  Without using the internet at large as my therapy couch, I was emotionally abused and taken advantage of multiple times in my life and it greatly impacts how I interact with people to this very day, as you’d expect events of such a degree would.  Particularly, I kept thinking that the RPG Maker fan crowd tends to skew young and be in the teenage range and at ages 14-16, I could’ve used something to help.

Of course, my entire thought process isn’t necessarily one of charity and selflessness.  It was also a way of me expressing what I’d dealt with in ways I’ve only ever communicated with my friends who were also victims of the same circumstances, the closest I would let myself come to personal stories and retellings with a cover of plastic children and wild adventures.  It was also in some ways a way of me verifying to myself that something ongoing was, in fact, bananas and should not have been happening, but that might be another story for another time.

As you can probably guess, Haze and Seal came into the picture since I needed to make two characters who would have this struggle.  A lot of decisions came about because of my personal experience.  They’re 15/16 because I was at the time of the incidents that primarily inspired me to make this game.  They’re both nonbinary because I am.  They love anime because I did (and do...?!)  One of their friends is even directly modeled off how one of my friends looked in high school.  To that degree, I guess someone, somewhere can call them self inserts.  But they’re also not, since I didn’t want to just do a personal retelling with fictional characters.  I’d just write a memoir or something at that point.

Haze’s design came first, and then Seal’s was sort of made as a foil to them.  Haze’s “colors” are pink, black, grey, and red.  Seal’s are teal and light purple... and also black.  Haze had a rabbit motif (which got toned down as I went on), Seal had an owl motif (which is now just a single mention in their list of likes...), etc.

Though in the beginning, the story was entirely different.  Initially, everything took place in the neon-ish areas with black sky and reflective, celestial water (that I, very eloquently, call “spacewater”).  The idea was that Haze and Seal were beings from another dimension and that their “fighting” was causing a rip in the universe that the kids stumbled into and therefore got wrapped up in this mess.  I had an entire script written and started making assets and when I went to sum up the game’s plot in a neat paragraph, I realized... I hated it!!!

So I chucked all I had done by that point writing-wise and started again.

In fact, I rewrote a lot.  After the first it was mostly small tweaks and adjustments, but the biggest ones (and the ones that still present a challenge to me!) usually involved trying to make Seal feel like a believable character.  I had shown an early draft to someone who said that Seal felt too much like trying to get back at someone, so I scrapped a ton of their lines and tried again.  I still worry whether or not they come across too Strawman-y, but I’ve done the best I can and whatever criticism people have can apply to my next writing attempts.  It’s very hard to separate yourself from subject matter you feel really personally attached to.  I don’t want to write them in a way that you immediately hate them, or hate me for writing such a blatant “villain” character, but in a way that you can formulate your own thoughts.  That said, though, I am violently allergic to people who call Seal a “tsundere,” even in jest.  So I guess I want people to have their own thoughts as long as it’s not that specific one...! (;;;;)

You may be thinking “heck, this is a lot of paragraphs in and you haven’t even brought up gameplay thoughts” and yes... that’s very true.  Shamefully, for a game where I thought “I should definitely, absolutely focus more on making it a Fun Game than a walking visual novel” I might’ve actually dropped the ball in that area.  I’d like to think I was more adventurous than I had been with my first game.  Some parts do kind of fall into the “walk to the next cutscene, find a key to unlock the next cutscene” pit, but I did put effort into figuring out what I could do with RMXP.  My obligatory “please don’t use this engine here, people thinking of using RPG Maker” statements here.  In the final product, though they’re very simple, I’m most proud of the chalkboard puzzle and the paint sorting puzzle.

Speaking of, I’m not sure if this is a general RPG Maker thing, a “man I hate RMXP” thing, or a “meaka cannot gamemake” thing, but I had several event/puzzles just up and quit on me a few times.  Like they would work fine for months and months, but one day I’d go to them and just nope, suddenly they’re not working, sorry.  Copy+pasting the event to a new map wouldn’t work, so I’d have to manually redo the event.  One of them was the chalkboard puzzle.  The other was the sliding puzzle when Tony is by herself.  Which I’m also aware slows the game down a ton, but I have legitimately no idea how to fix that... I tried and I could never get to to not lag like crazy.

Like I said, I started in July 2014.  I’d shipped the game off to my beta testers in March 2018.  A vast majority of that time was spent creating the visual assets since everything you see in the game is custom.  All the sprites, all the tilesets, every little pixel of it.  All me!  Needless to say... it was very exhausting and very time consuming. I grossly underestimated how much time I thought it’d take.  I never accounted for the very real possibility of burnout, which is incredibly silly considering I was making something entirely by myself that was also an occasionally difficult subject matter...!  There were quite a few weeks where I touched nothing because I couldn’t bring myself to and even a few times where I just considered deleting everything and cancelling the project.  I knew I’d be mad at myself if I quit, especially as I got later into production, so I just tried my best to make sure I didn’t turn it into a huge chore.  Obviously, there were parts that were more tedious than others, but this game really is a very large labor of love that I put a lot of my heart into.

Part of that time is also a little bit of indecision.  Did you know I went through 3 possible title screens?  I sure did!  I’ve also publicly posted about redoing both Haze and Seal’s bust sprites before.  I almost redid all of the kids’, too, but I didn’t wanna get caught in the loop of remaking everything, so I opted to just leave them as they are.  Most of them don’t bug me as much.  M...most of them!

I’m hopping back on the Story train since obviously that was my main focus, but the decision to have Seal sort of “reveal” their true nature (or at least have a jealousy-related anger burst) to Octavio as an animated cutscene was one I’d decided pretty early.  Which is also why, unsurprisingly, I was debating getting voice actors for a hot minute.  But I wouldn’t have used it anywhere else in the game, so I opted not to.  I also wanted to keep the file size low, but that wound up not happening so much, h-haha...   For someone who uses the only engine without native support for videos, I sure do like making animated cutscenes, huh.

Anyway.  This scene originally bridged Octavio’s section of the game to Pablo’s, which would’ve been (for some reason) in an abandoned hospital.  But that didn’t pan out because it didn’t fit what I wanted the game to be and also by switching the order of the two, it builds up more tension(?) on the kind of character you expect Seal to be.  I hope their very first “fuck off, maybe” took someone out there by surprise!

This also was the point when I decided I wanted to commission an original soundtrack, since nothing quite got across what I wanted at the time.  Which is when I put out my silly ad post and somehow managed to get the amazing ProjectTrinity to compose for me...!  I’m still amazed by the sheer quality of music he made for my little RPGMaker game.

Having the teen characters curse was also something I waffled on for a bit.  Clearly, I dwell on the important things as a writer.  I wanted it to contrast the cutesy, kidlike way the siblings talk and also the sort of squeaky-clean image the witches (particularly Seal) present to the kids by contrasting how they talk to each other, most importantly how Seal talks to Haze and their other friends.  I did have the same issue with the Mother in my first game, but I opted to not have her curse at all either since she’s childish in her own way, too.  But that’s not for THIS game’s postmortem, get otta here!!!

I also very much was set on a “battle” with words being the final event of the game.  Though I had a hard time imagining what that would be initially, but eventually arrived at a sort of fake battle system that was introduced in the mine.  The setting for this battle changed with time (everywhere from the park to the academy and in between) was considered...!  The dirty secret is that while I did like the decision to make it take place in the voids between worlds, I also sort of did not want to draw the staircase in the witch academy.  Originally, the kids would’ve also helped Haze “reach” Seal (who was putting actual obstacles in the way), but I guess in my own way, I wanted to give Haze the ability to confront Seal on their own, one-on-one.  Or something like that...!  I also didn’t want to add too much needless backtracking.

I’m... unsure what other point I really want to make, so I guess I’ll end this here unless anyone has anything in particular that interests them they’d want me to answer!

All in all, this game means a lot to me and took a chunk of my life to make and I really hope it’s able to reach at least one person who might need it, even if it’s only a little.

So we’ve all seen the new video introducing the new villain of Sonic Forces: Infinite. People have already picked apart the video and other teasers so I will just list the key points for this theory on just who or what this asshole is.

- Shadow, Chaos and Metal have been brainwashed.

- Infinite is faster than Sonic and can fly.

- People who can’t possibly be there are present nonetheless (Classic Sonic, Chaos, Metal, Silver).

- Eggman is implied to have multiple copies of the mechs from previous games (Egg Dragoons, Death Egg Robots).

But the most important thing is the motif constantly associated with Infinite.

Glitches.

They’re absolutely EVERYWHERE. Chaos and Metal appear to glitch while under his control, there’s glitches hovering around him and both his musical theme and the video attached to it are OVERFLOWING with glitches.

This is not by accident, or a one-time Cool Effect™. This is DELIBERATE.

And in case we’ve all forgotten, GLITCHES ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE IN VIDEO GAMES! They’re bugs, development errors, things game developers WANT and NEED to remove before final release! So why would Infinite have glitches all around him?

To understand that, let’s look at another game that deliberately uses glitches as a part of gameplay: Undertale.

We all know the way Undertale fucks with your game. Distortion of visuals and audio, save scumming, storing information between saves, screwing around with the interface and even deliberately crashing the game. However, there’s one vital plot point that allows all of that to take place, the only reason WHY Undertale can fuck around with itself this much and what I’m suspecting is going on with Infinite.

There are characters that are AWARE of the fact that they are in a video game.

Sans is aware of your ability to save and load, and remembers things about your previous playthrough if you reset your save file. He’s also the person calling you on the phone at the end of a Neutral run, when you’re pretty much in The Void™.

Flowey is also aware of the ability to save and load, considering he used to HAVE that ability. He remembers your previous playthrough, addresses you (the player) directly on occasion and tells you that he knows what it’s like to use the world as his plaything. When in possession of the six human souls, he can save and load again and has the power to crash your game.

But how is that linked to Infinite? Well, Infinite HAS that same awareness! It’s not shown in the video that introduces him, but it is HEAVILY implied in the lyrics of his musical theme, both in the background vocals and in the song itself.

“When there’s no-one left / To carry on / (This is an illusion, open up your eyes and)”

“So look around you / And tell me what you really see / You live a lie and that’s the difference to you and me”

“This is an illusion”, “You live a lie”, Infinite is aware that Sonic’s world is fictional, and so far, he’s the only one who knows. I feel like this song is addressing Sonic and pals, because he’s clearly talking to people IN the game.

However, there is one more parallel I haven’t discussed yet, and honestly the most dangerous one.

Sans, Flowey and Infinite are INSANELY powerful because of their awareness. So powerful, in fact, that Sans and Flowey function as the final bosses of Undertale (Flowey for the Neutral and (technically) the True Pacifist run, Sans for the Genocide run) and we can safely assume Infinite will be the final boss for Forces. I will focus solely on Sans and Infinite for this one because including Flowey would make this REALLY long and spoilery.

Sans DELIBERATELY BREAKS THE RULES OF THE GAME to beat you on a Genocide run. He delivers the first strike (Undertale ALWAYS lets the player attack first), dodges your attacks, disables invincibility frames, attacks you while you’re in the menu, gives you a chance to “spare” him before unleashing an unavoidable attack, and when he’s too tired to continue fighting, he LOCKS YOU IN HIS TURN with the intention to stay there until you get bored and leave! For this reason, his boss fight is infamous for being one of the hardest, most rage-inducing fights in the history of gaming.

Infinite, from what we can see, is PANTS-SHITTINGLY overpowered. He’s faster than Sonic, he’s strong as balls, he can fly, he can preform mind control, he has that weird cube-attack that we don’t know what it does yet, he’s implied to be immortal and he has no perceived weaknesses. That’s INSANE, even for a final boss. Think about it, EVERY boss, every character we’ve seen has had some form of weakness or flaw. Infinite doesn’t. That’s not a tough boss, that’s straight up UNFAIR!

So what does this mean?

It means that, like Sans, Infinite isn’t playing by the rules. However, there’s one key difference between these two characters.

Sans is a cheater. Breaking the rules, but staying within the parameters of Undertale itself. He’s flimsy as fuck, but he uses cheating to nullify his weak stats. Only 1 HP and 1 DEFENSE? No problem, just dodge everything coming at you. Only 1 ATTACK? Yeah, he deals 1 damage, but not per hit, per FRAME (plus he has a sort of poison effect but that could just be a Thing he can do). Sans’s antics don’t have a big impact on the world around him, because the rules he breaks aren’t fundamental to the universe.

Infinite, however, is a hacker. He changed his own stats to make him more powerful than anyone else, to the point of near-godhood. This makes him more dangerous than Sans, because he can not only break the rules, he can REWITE them entirely.

Now, I guarantee some of you have hacked before (I don’t mean exploiting bugs, I mean deliberately fucking with the game’s code). If you have, you probably know that it rarely ends well. Games are just not built with hacked clients in mind, so hacking can result in crashes, fucked-up models/sprites, ending up in places you’re not supposed to be (and getting stuck), missing out on things you’ve GOT to have to complete the game, and… Glitches.

Which links us back to Infinite and his glitchy Aesthetic™.

This could be incredibly dangerous for EVERYONE in this game. If you fuck with a game’s code too much, things go south FAST. I’m talking characters who die before they’re supposed to, levels or objectives that can’t be completed, clipping through floors of areas you HAVE to pass through, the list goes on. And in the worst cases, we’re talking about corrupted save files, destroyed games or - in some VERY extreme cases - a broken console/PC.

Infinite has the power to do that. He has the power to fuck up a save file, he has the power to rewrite the universe as he pleases. Sonic and friends are just playthings to him. He can make himself too powerful for them to possibly defeat, and if they come close, he can alter their code. He can change their abilities, their wants and needs (mind control, anyone?) and their ENTIRE PERSONALITY! He can bring people back from the dead and wipe those who oppose him from existence within the blink of an eye.

We’re seeing the effects of his fuckery already. Chaos and Metal are glitching because they’re not supposed to be alive (Chaos died in SA1 and - besides Generations - when have we seen Metal after Heroes?). There are doubles of Eggman’s mechs because Infinite has been spawning them in (which must be easier to do than to bring someone back from the dead), but they’re weaker and easier to defeat. Green Hill has lost part of its color, and all the water has turned into sand. Not only that, but the entire planet is burning and crumbling, and I don’t think it’s JUST Eggman. It’s only a matter of time before Infinite does permanent damage.

And I think this is where the Avatar comes in.

We, as players, have always been glorified spectators. Sure, we control Sonic (and sometimes other people), but Sonic is his own person. He has his own personality, his own wants and needs, he’s not just an extension of the player.

The Avatar, however, is a blank slate. We get to decide their species, their appearance, and I’m assuming we also get to decide how they interact with the other characters. They have no personality TO manipulate, therefore they’re immune to Infinite’s bullshit.

And most importantly, we, the players, can hack as well.

We are the only ones who can counter Infinite’s power, because we have the same ability. Infinite is the physical embodiment of a virus, and we are the only ones who can remove it. Fight fire with fire, as they say.

Depending on the character he/she can guess/understand the gestures and mimiques they make, but not all characters are as empathic. “I stood in front of the bed. Steven wore a frown. It made me feel uneasy not knowing why he started to frown all of a sudden.” But this is wonderful because you can play with it, you can form suspense with it. Why is Steven frowning? (In literature there are very interesting experiments on I-narration but they are more artifical.)About third person narration: With third person narration it’s the most important thing to know beforehand which perspective you are going to take. Is the point of view bound to a certain character? Is it omniscient and the narrator knows more than any character? For instance the narration can look into the thoughts of one character and skip to the future of the character, that he won’t know yet. (It is a very difficult perspective to stay coherent with.) Then there is a neutral focalization (according to Gerard Genette), in which the narrator knows less than the character. E.g. “She stood in front of the bed. Steven wore a frown. She started to frown now, too.”

The easiest and most common perspective is the internal focalization. It enables you to depict the feelings and thoughts of one character like the I-narration but you can choose more than one character to look into within the whole story. And in neutral focalization, I would have to cross out everything, except Yuzuru reaching the fruit seller and looking at the apples.

5. Try and error. The earlier points were about the what of a story - and a bit about the how at the last point. But the thing that makes your story unique is your style of writing.
