As a 30 something millennial, I just watched “The Fugitive” and sequel for the first time. I’m not generally into action movies, but it’s Dad’s b-day, and movies is what we do.
My main thought is this:
This 1993 film is responsible for NCIS and all other modern law enforcement as “found family” tv shows.
Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones) calls his younger agents his kids.
He gets vengeful when they are hurt.
He is hard on them and pushes them, but also get incredibly soft when they need a moment to collect themselves.
He praises them when they do something well “Good job young man” “Get this kid a round” ect.
And that is before we get into their banter. The banter says without any back story that these people have been working together forever, and know what their friend is about to do. They talk like they hate each other and obviously have each other’s back and bicker like siblings.
One character is obsessed with clothes, and it’s not the female. One has the soft face that gets them in doors and it’s not the female. One gets shit done, always, and it’s the female. One just seems to always be after everyone’s lunch. These were full fleshed characters that could have easily been one line flat background extras. I can’t recall a similar movie where they weren’t.
Honestly? I was watching both these films for the Marshals way more than for the plot, and actively cheered out loud when the whole team pulled up in the sequel. “They kept them! Yes!”
I guess what I’m saying is everyone always quotes the big speech about checking “every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse…”
What they ought to be paying attention to, and quoting, are lines about tacky suits and the girl being the boss’s favorite.
That’s how you write secondary characters.

The thought of Amelia/Alfred declaring independence and then being immediately thrust into parenthood appeals to me. Imagine if you will shortly after the Revolution the emergence of State Personifications coming about with each admission to the Union (Delaware was the first one). Whether they appear miraculously or are birthed via (unwilling) parthenogenesis (which I prefer) the bottom line is that suddenly America has all these kids to take care of, all of who grow up just as fast as America did. Regardless of how they came to be or how fast they grow, America loves them with his/her whole being and creates a system in which they are always protected and accounted for by the larger government. America promises to be there for them the way England never was.
Then fast forward to the Civil War, and America is waging a bloody war against half of her/his children that see hundreds of thousands of their people dead. Brother against brother, father against son, cousin against cousin. And each secession feels like a small death because they are part of America just as much as America is a part of them, practically inseparable, or at least America thought so. To add even more complexity, not all of America's children were white or white-passing. America being neglected because s/he was to far away or denied certain rights for not being British enough was bad on its own, but imagine your parent not being able to claim you or fully protect you or give you basic human rights without public/social/political backlash because your skin is darker and you're legal property in half the country. Or imagine having powerful politicians who want to keep people who look like your children in bondage and you have to compromise with them to keep the Union whole, knowing the opinions they would have if they even knew you had children who were black (some of them do know and make sure their opinions are known). Or your other children starting a war to selfishly keep this system in place at the expense of their black siblings. The relationship between America and his/her children, with America acting as both the federal government that protects the states as well as the greater whole that represents the Union and the states as the children, each an extension of America, an integral part of America's being, pushing back against the sometimes overbearing hovering of their parent, impeding on states rights (whether they believe America is in the right or not) and protecting others and sometimes America will helplessly throw his/her hands in the air and say "fine, ill let YOU decide on this issue because I am not a dictator, despite what some of you like to think, but if you fuck up im stepping in" because America doesn't want to make the same mistakes England made in the past but then America has to deal with the negative consequences of her/his children's actions when they do something unbelievably stupid while trying not to seem like a fire-breathing tyrant. Which, they end up thinking anyway, regardless if America wasn't entirely in the wrong about butting in and taking hold of the situation before it escalated. The negative reaction only serves to make America step away AGAIN so as to not seem completely authoritarian in their eyes. It's a never-ending cycle. Not to mention the complex relationships the states have with each other, especially the southern states among themselves and the southern vs northern states rivalry.

also whenever America takes his/her eyes off the states for 1mili second to see what the rest of the world is up to (hopefully not another world war) while usually being like 'back off, geeze! 🤬' America's children immediately switch to 'how come you're not paying attention to ME instead 🥺 you always focus on the world instead of ME 😢'

It's honestly pretty frustrating sometimes how I feel like so many people say they love Martha, but mostly what I actually see people saying about Martha is how much she probably does/should hate the Doctor for not returning her crush, or sometimes how much people hate Blink/Family of Blood/Last of the Time Lords because they were hard for her.
And like, the former of those is frustrating because a) Nobody is obligated to return someone's romantic feelings, b) Being oblivious to someone having a crush on you might suck for the other person but is not actually a moral failing and c) Martha was sad about it but like. She didn't leave because she was furious at the Doctor for not returning her crush? She left because she knew her crush wasn't reciprocated and wasn't going to be, but couldn't get over it on her end while travelling with the Doctor. And also because the past year had been pretty traumatizing for everyone, including her and also the Doctor and also everyone else who was on that ship thing.
Anyways
I just wanted to talk for a bit about the things I like about Martha, or that are interesting, that are unrelated to those points above.
I think she's the first companion in New Who to join Unit, and I think still the only one to be a medical doctor with a strong scientific backing. Which is cool!
I think it's interesting that in the first episode she appears in, her family is shown to be kind of messy and kind of frustrating, and it feels like that's something she's a little glad to be getting away from for a bit when she travels with the Doctor (though it's not the reason she travels with them). And then, at the end of the season when her family is in danger she prioritizes their wellbeing enough to snap at the Doctor about it. If I remember correctly their phones were tapped or something and it wound up making things a bit worse, but I appreciate the nuances of her relationship with them and how important they are to her despite the messiness.
Despite all the ado made about her crush on the Doctor, I really loved how she really seemed to get the point of travelling with the Doctor. I think that she nailed both the joy and excitement of the unknown, and the compassion and sense of care that motivates the Doctor's travels, and which I think is vital to all of my favourite companions.
It also contrasts in interesting ways with how her personality shifts after she stops travelling with the Doctor - she still cares about people's wellbeing and seems to value the things she learned while travelling, but working with Unit and Torchwood does make her more military, and then of course doing freelance alien fighting (? or something?) in the End of Time.
I think Martha and the Doctor are an interesting duo because they contrast each other in interesting ways. They're both compassionate, hopeful but practical, and good at what they do, but they reflect those qualities in ways that almost, but don't quite, fit together nicely. They don't conflict, really, but they're not quite sustainable either.
They work well together and care about each other, but they're too similar in some ways and too different in others to ever quite see eye to eye, which is why they end up going in different directions. And I think that's not anyone's fault, or indicative of any deep flaws in either of them. Or even really a tragedy, because Martha seems to be doing new and interesting things every time we see her, with plenty of options available and a decent rapport with the Doctor whenever they show up.
Anyway this got way longer than I meant it to. Tldr: There are so many more interesting things to say about Martha than just "She must hate the Doctor". Here are some of them.

Ah yes, peter, sweet sweet boy.
peter is so special and sweet and I do have many thoughts about him.
peter loves cuddles. this is probably not surprising, but he indeed loves to snuggle up and nuzzle into someone’s neck and hold their hands. lucky for him he has this group of super touchy-feely guys to give him all the snuggles he wants. He just loves his friends so much.
Peter and mike end up getting really close. I think that after The Devil and Peter Tork, pete starts getting some really bad nightmares, about hell, but also ones that feature things like the other monkees forgetting about him or not knowing he’s there or even ones where they’re not real and this gets him real deep (poor thing). I feel like as a kid he had a hard time holding onto friends (this is a little bit personal, apologies), and was picked on a lot for being “different” and “soft” and it gets to him (like in the wild monkees when the girl calls him a sissy and he gets particularly upset) and the idea that this group of people who love him and care for him aren’t really real can be a lot.
He often starts screaming or crying in his sleep and Mike starts to wake up and go over to his bed to stay with him and calm him down. Davy also sometimes wakes up (micky is a VERY deep sleeper, but he has woken up before and come over to help but he konked out pretty quickly) Usually it’s just peter and Mike and Mike trying to calm peter down, just holding him close and rubbing his back and hair and letting peter know he’s there and that he’s real. Mike doesn’t feel really good at talking, especially not at two in the morning, so that is usually the most he can do, and it does help peter, who loves pressure and soft snuggles. Mike also sometimes sings to him, quietly as to not wake up the others, and they do talk a bit, mike trying to get peter to tell him what the dreams were about but they’re sometimes too confusing or too much for peter, and peter can’t always talk at all afterwards, so if mike talks to him it tends to be soothing things in a soft voice or asking peter if he wants to be sung to.
despite mike’s help, pete has a very hard time getting enough sleep and sleeping through the night so sometimes mike has him take a lot of shorter naps during the day (usually downstairs with the rest of the group) but peter has a hard time going to bed at night, afraid of what nightmares he’s going to have, so he starts having some terrible panic attacks about going to bed. Mike starts just sleeping in peter’s bed every night (eventually they all just sleep in the same bed because what the hell, they’re snuggly, but not at first). But peter has a lot of trouble with bedtime for a while, and micky one night comes up with an idea that this is NOT ‘bedtime’! No no no! this is PILLOW time, and pillow time is special and different! and tells him all these stories about it and it makes peter laugh and gets him to be able to go to sleep for a while, safe with Mike, though he still tends to wake up from nightmares.
this is another self-projection thing, but during this time when peter is having terrible nightmares he starts having problems with bedwetting. He can’t help it, but it freaks him out even more. It starts almost right away and Mike also starts helping him through it, late at night getting poor, crying peter into the bathroom and putting on a shower for him. Mike brings his guitar in and plays some things sitting against the bathroom door so that peter knows he’s there. then i guess they fall asleep in mike’s bed and mike deals with the sheets in the morning and they just don’t tell the other guys because peter’s embarrassed about it. peter does NOT get scolded about it at all, that’s a must for me, just because i’ve had problems with that due to nightmares and waking up to someone yelling at you for being disgusting is not a helpful thing. So peter is definitely assured he’s not disgusting and it’s not his fault and he is treated like a person about it. I also think mike knows how to deal with it, assumedly having taken care of younger siblings (see when he talks about his family in Monkee Mother) so he is prepared to help peter out and doesn’t really sweat it. Yeah, that’s just a personal segment of this all.
okay so to me tv show-peter is autistic. real life peter tork was diagnosed with autism later in his life, but peter the character shows a lot of autistic traits in my opinion so that’s gonna factor into a lot of these next ideas.
he probably needs help with a lot of things, stuff like cutting his nails or remembering to brush his teeth (micky also has trouble with both of those and mike has a system now where they all brush their teeth at the same time and is usually good at figuring out when he needs to throw a nail clipper at micky as he’s been scratched multiple times during werewolf impressions and similar) but peter gets the help he needs because the boys all help him out!
(another little self-projecting thing) peter has trouble not spilling glasses of water so he has to be reminded a lot to use two hands when holding a glass. (this will forever be my struggle lol)
he’s also prone to meltdowns if he gets overstimulated. (it’s the sixties so autism is not really understood so i think peter is definitely not diagnosed and he doesn’t really know what these meltdowns are) Sometimes grocery stores are a lot for him and the other boys have to frantically figure out how to calm him down. if it happens at the grocery store usually one of them will go with peter to go sit in the car (a lot of times it’s mike, because grocery stores are also very overstimulating for him. dont tell mike, but he’s also autistic haha. but sometimes it’s not mike because putting davy and micky alone to do the shopping together is not always the best idea). Micky is not always the best at calming peter down because he sometimes can make it more overstimulating, but he figured out a good way to calm peter and get his brain thinking about other things by pointing to something and saying “peter what color is that car/sign/whatever” or, if there’s nothing all that interesting around asking peter what different animals say.
peter also gets bedtime stories read to him a lot. either that or they sing to him. sometimes mike will have peter and davy snuggled up on either side of him while micky sits and the end of the bed and sings and they often all do harmonies together. sometimes mike’ll figure out a new song right before bed and they all work it out together, running to get a guitar while micky drums out a beat on the bedframe saying “we’re really gonna make it big with this one guys!” and it’s so exciting. wholesome little rock band activities.
(this is not a headcanon and this post is already so long so i’m leaving random stuff out for maybe another time but i just have to put it into the world because when the monkees are little little cuties i go absolutely insane. you know in monkee mother when micky starts spoonfeeding pudding or something to peter, is that not the cutest fucking thing in the world?!???! micky is so older brother) okay, now back to our regularly scheduled programming of *shuffles cards* the rest of the random peter headcanons!
peter’s nickname is ‘peterbabe’ (said as all one word) sometimes elongated to ‘peterbaby’ and micky jokes that they should change his full name to ‘peterbabe tork’ because they just say it so darn often.
this is pretty obvious but peter loves flowers! hes a flower boy! he even grows daffodils! :) He brings flowers into the pad (micky is allergic to a lot of them unfortunately so he’s prone to sneezing fits) and he likes putting flowers in everyone’s hair (micky’s hair is particularly fun to put flowers in so peter tries extra hard to find ones he won’t sneeze over) as well as his own hair and he puts them along the windowsills too, which has made for some good photography.
I guess since this is so long i’ll finish it off with a little thought since it’s indeed christmas: in the christmas episode they all rag on peter about getting “bad” gifts and to me the only gift that’s not really working is the coat for davy cause it’s just too big. It was mikes fault for opening snow skis in july, and the chemistry set is actually a very thoughtful gift for science-loving micky, micky just had to go and DRINK whatever concoction he had made which is basically lab safety no no #1 and that is not peter’s fault. the writers pulled those “bad” gifts out of their asses. anyway.
AH! and a bonus because i forgot to include it in the davy post here’s a davy headcanon I hold dear that was from the monkees headcanon instagram account but is so wholesome that i need to bring it to everyone’s attention: davy falls asleep on the couch and often needs to be carried to bed. thank you.
And yes, davy’s “diagnosis” in 33 1/3 being “regression” on top of him literally dancing around dressed as a toddler in a baby’s bedroom can 100% support my idea that davy is baby real.

Riley/Martha & Ten/Martha fic AU post-42
The Doctor doesn’t stop her as Riley’s face lights up and he follows her onto the TARDIS. It’s an apology and yet not one at all from the Doctor. It’s an apology in that he doesn’t say a word to her. It’s an acceptance that she’s important to him that he's willing to pull the lever, sending them and an amazed Riley into space and time.
To Martha’s endless fascination (and honestly a welcome shot to her self-confidence), she realizes that the silence is not just an apology; the Doctor is jealous of the fact that she has Riley.
(The thing is that Martha isn't even sure if the Doctor realizes it. Realizes that he cares about her, that he still wants her time to be his, to be liked, looked upon, appreciated. That he wants her attention.
But the kicker, Martha realizes, is not that the Doctor’s jealous of Riley asking Martha questions. He doesn't care if Riley doesn't ask him questions. He scowls when Martha answers them. He cares when Martha touches Riley. He cares when Martha isn't focused on him.)
It’s too bad that Martha doesn’t have a chance to feel out this new dynamic, this shift of power among those in the TARDIS, before the Family of Blood comes along.
(Aka: I read @stewy's post about Riley joining Ten and Martha post-42 and I realized that Human Nature/Family of Blood is the literal next episode and this spiralled.)

So, a lot of people out there imagine fics in their head before bed, right?
And IDK why, but this past few nights, my brain has decided to make Casey Jones Jr SUFFER.
This stuff is TOO HEAVY ANGST. If I actually wrote it out as a fic, y'all would probably look at it and go "now this is TOO FAR." Hence the reason for this post. But SOMEONE has to suffer here with me. Even so, it might be TOO HEAVY STILL. BUT I NEED TO SCREAM IT OUT SOMEHOW! LIKE.
Okay, so.
So imagine CJ is getting used to living in the present timeline, right? He's a part of the family, no Kraang around, things are nice.
And then he realizes. The date he was born in the bad timeline is coming up, but Cassandra Jones isn't pregnant. In fact, the date passes, and Cassandra Jones still isn't pregnant or anything.
Huh, looks like Casey Jones Junior isn't gonna be born here. Looks like the only kinda of world he can naturally exist in is an apocalypse.
OH NO!
But you know who IS born that year? Leo's twins. Man, now that he's got some ACTUAL kids, maybe he won't need/want to be a pseudo dad to Casey.
CASEY NO!!
And the way everyone is with their kids reminds him of how they were with HIM when HE was a kid. And it hurts, because he wants to have that again. He wants to not be the only one who remembers that.
CASEY!!!!!
And then imagine the bad coping mechanisms he could develop for all of these feelings! Like, something like what happened in that Vape Mikey AU? Maybe... worse?
CASEY NO!! NO, CASEY!!!
Speaking of that AU, what if his source for this bad stuff is the Purple Dragons? What if he sometimes trades little bits of Donnie's tech for stuff?
NO!!! CASEY!! IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU'RE PURPOSELY TAKING THE STUFF HE'D DISCARD ANYWAY!!! HE'LL NOTICE!!!!! CASEY!!!!
And there are other people he could probably get the stuff from, and they'd take OTHER things in exchange for the stuff. Man, imagine if those other things resulted in stuff for Casey?
STOP STOP!!! HE'S SUFFERED ENOUGH!!!!
And then, of course, all of this culminates in an intervention from the fam. Because, despite Casey's best efforts to hide everything from everyone, they notice. And despite everything, Leo still sees him as one of his kids, dang it!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
But I did get a silly goofy way to reimagine Woody Dirkins into Rise. imagine getting bit by a oozesquito, and the most change is that the blood hair & blue eyes intensify. And you also suddenly start meeting/interacting with all these mutants and yokai.

about 90% of my brain runs solely on associations and one of the worst ones i have is when im playing the sims 4 and trying to pick out a blue chair.
because way back when (2018ish), i was watching a documentary on jonestown, called jonestown: the life and death of the peoples temple, while playing the sims 4 because adhd brain. and as i was trying to pick out a blue chair for a bedroom, there was a lady (i think her name was june) talking about how she got involved with the peoples temple, and it was quite memorable so association formed immediately.
so now, anytime im trying to pick out a blue chair in the sims 4, i just remember her explaining that her mother-in-law was in need of a new pet monkey, because her previous monkey had hung itself, so she looked in the newspaper for a new monkey and found jim jones selling monkeys, and so her mother-in-law meets him about the monkey and he invites her to his church, and at no point does she indicate that any part of this story is weird which is besides the point but bears mentioning in my brain.

a/n: This was initially a deleted scene from my Underworld divergence "Hell to Pay". However, it can be read as a standalone moment where David and Snow tend to Killian after Emma rescues Killian from Hades in the Underworld. In that story (Hell to Pay), I'd written it where Emma's magic is weaker in the Underworld, meaning she had to heal his injuries one by one and it took a lot out of her. It also took her a lot longer to get Killian back to safety, for h/c reasons lol. So, right now they're safe in the Underworld version of the loft, Emma is passed out asleep from saving him and Killian is still quite banged up. So, if you haven't read Hell to Pay, then just know that, and you'll be caught up. If you have read Hell to Pay, then this could have taken place right after Chapter 14.
Killian woke to pain.
His torso was a pit of fire.
He couldn't remember what rendered him lying on his chest. The only thing his muddled, pain-ridden mind could put together was that lying on broken ribs hurt, and it was an agony he couldn't take.
He tried to push himself up, get the pressure off his ribs, but the moment he moved, a horrible pain shot through his chest. An unhinged sound escaped his throat, making him fall the inch back down, which did not help the broken ribs.
Hands were suddenly on him, a voice speaking from somewhere beyond the haze of agony. Whoever grabbed him was trying to lift him up, the same way Hades' guards had dragged him up from the floor of his cell countless times for another beating.
Killian panicked.
He lashed out with his hook.
But the moment he did, something in his left shoulder tore with a searing pain.
Killian groaned, feeling his forearm grabbed before it could make contact. Despite the pain, he fought.
He couldn't be taken again.
He couldn't bloody handle any more pain.
"HOOK!"
Killian's eyes snapped open.
David was breathing hard, one hand still holding his left forearm.
Killian blinked in utter confusion.
The prince was on his feet, looking incredibly relieved to have Killian's attention, as if he'd been trying to get it for some time. David slowly released him. "Hook," he said, a little breathless. "It's okay. You're safe," he added, in a sort of gentle voice that Killian had only ever heard directed at the members of his immediate family.
Another stab of pain from his ribs made Killian screw his eyes shut. He tried again to push himself up, but his muscles couldn't handle the strain.
"I'll help," said David, reaching for him again. "Don't try to take my head off, okay?"
In too much pain to reply, Killian just shut his eyes, and tried his best to help as David helped him to his back. He couldn't swallow the pained sounds that escaped his clenched teeth as David moved him, and by the time he was on his back, against what felt like pillows, he was panting. "Thank you," whispered Killian, out of breath.
David sank to the edge of the coffee table. With a shaky smile, David said, "I'm just glad you didn't have your hook."
Killian opened his eyes, giving him a halfhearted wince. "Sorry, mate," he said with difficulty, every breath still feeling like a knife sliding through his ribs.
Killian shut his eyes. His phantom heart was still pounding, just beginning to slow with the relief that he wasn't in that godforsaken prison of Hades'. That realization suddenly dawned the memories from the river to the caves to the woodland and the twisted Underworld version of Storybrooke. He and Emma were safe.
Killian's phantom heart stopped.
His eyes snapped open.
Emma.
"Emma—" he breathed, and without thinking, he jerked upright, only for pain to ignite everywhere, making him catch a cry in his throat. Despite it, he still tried to get up, only for David to push down on his uninjured shoulder, though carefully enough not to press into the broken bones.
"—is just fine," said David with a flick of a touched smile. Before Killian could ask, David nodded his head to his right, and Killian looked.
Asleep in the armchair beside the couch was Emma.
She was curled into a ball, and it would have been adorable if it wasn't because she was utterly exhausted. But Killian could see her breathe, see her chest rise and fall. She was okay.
She was safe.
Killian felt relief settle into his broken bones like cool water.
"She fell asleep about an hour ago," said David, watching his daughter with a glint in his eye like he could watch her forever. He looked back at Killian. He sighed, wincing a little. "This might be a dumb question, but... how are you feeling?"
Bloody horrible.
His torso was the worst of the pain. His ribs were still a fire that hasn't calmed down, and his shoulder was a new pain, searing and feeling like claws were ripping it open all over again. There were more broken bones in his torso than his ribs—Emma had healed most of his ribs, his beautiful lass—and he guessed the damn creature's claws were the culprit of that. His head pounded, and it made the room blur and spin. He felt weak and slightly sick. Above it all, he felt exhaustion so heavy it was determined to pull him back under.
But he suddenly, blissfully, he realized his back was nearly free of the agony it once was, thanks to his time at the mercy (or lack thereof) of Hades' lash. Killian nearly smiled with relief; that pain had quite likely been the worst of it all. But his relief faltered a moment later when he realized his jacket was missing and why the pain was gone.
Bloody hell.
Emma must have healed him.
That was something he didn't want her to see.
"Hook?"
Killian blinked his eyes back open, not realizing he closed them. He blinked, then answered David's question. "About as good as I… appear," he said raggedly, "I suppose."
David grimaced. "I'm sorry we couldn't find you… sooner," he said quietly. "You shouldn't have had to go through this."
Guilt gnawed at Killian, hurting worse than the injuries, thinking about the last time he saw Emma's father. "After…" rasped Killian, wincing sharply through physical and emotional pain. "After all I've… done," he managed, forcing himself to meet David's eyes, "I deserved it," he whispered.
Something shifted in David's eyes. "Hook—"
Killian looked away before he could see what that change was.
Before he could see his own hatred reflected in the other man's eyes.
Because bloody hell he knew he couldn't take any more physical pain, but he couldn't take that pain even more.
"I need…" Killian lost his breath, grimacing as he breathed through fire. "I need to apologize," he said shallowly. David opened his mouth to respond, but Killian didn't let him. "Please," he whispered. "I…" His eyes burned. "I am so bloody sorry for everything… everything I did to your family," he choked out. "If I could take it back, I would in an instant."
"Hook—" said David again, but Killian didn't let him finish; couldn't hear David say what he had been telling himself ever since he bloody died.
"I never deserved your daughter," said Killian heavily, the words scraped out and broken. "I never deserved to play any part in your family. And after what I did…" He shut his eyes. "You were right to hate me those years ago. I—"
"Killian."
Killian opened his eyes, his words dying in his throat.
David hasn't called him by his name since he had to, back when Henry didn't have his memory.
And only stunning Killian more, David didn't have the contempt in his eyes that Killian expected to see.
David sighed. "Do you really think, after everything you just went through here, after sacrificing yourself to save us all, that I could possibly hate you? That any of us could?" Killian blinked, stunned into silence. "We get it, Hook. You fought the darkness your whole life; I can't imagine how hard it was to have to fight it all over again. I…" He hesitated, looking at his daughter's sleeping form. "I'm glad Emma saved your life back in Camelot, because believe it or not… you've… grown on me." He looked back at Killian, saying the words with a slight roll of his eyes, but his eyes couldn't hide the fact that he meant it. Killian listened with utter disbelief. David sobered a little, adding, "But I'm sorry that saving your life had to come to that. I wish neither of you had to suffer that curse. But, you fought it and you were a hero. Are a hero." he corrected. With a heavy, almost exasperated sigh, he said, "Did you really think we'd all come down here to save you if we didn't think that?"
Killian couldn't speak.
Shocked into absolute silence.
"And for the record," said David, rolling his eyes again for effect, "I never hated you. It was more like… a strong dislike for the infuriating pirate who wouldn't stop hitting on my daughter." A glare. "And my wife."
Killian found himself smiling a little, lifting a brow to say, "I would have hit on you if you only asked, mate."
That time, Killian knew the eye roll was real.
But Killian sobered too, guilt stinging more than the wounds, saying quietly, "Apologies for my past behavior as well. I'm… I'm not proud of the man I used to be."
David gave him a meaningful look. "Don't think I forgot about Neverland, Hook. Without you saving my sorry ass, I wouldn't be with my family right now." David lifted a brow. "Back then, you said you did it for Emma, but you and I both know you did it because you're a good, if sometimes misguided, man." Killian opened his mouth to reply, but David beat him to it. "We all made mistakes in the past. Regardless of them, you should be proud of the man you are today." That soft look that Killian would never get used to being directed at him was in David's eyes again. "You've deserved Emma for a long time, now, Killian."
Killian blinked.
Never in his life would he have expected getting such… such approval from David, in more ways than one.
He wasn't sure he exactly agreed with him—forgiving himself wouldn't be that easy, if it were even possible—but he smiled nonetheless, because he had the prince's forgiveness and he honestly had worried he'd never even get close to it.
Killian shifted, in an attempt to alleviate the horrible pain in his shoulder. He grimaced, his hand grasping at his shoulder.
David's brows kneaded, seeing the way Killian was clutching at his ribs. David winced a little in sympathy. "Regina and the others should be back in a few hours. I'm sure she can heal the rest of your injuries." Giving Emma a worried look, David said, "Emma seems pretty drained."
"Emma has done enough," whispered Killian, looking at Emma himself, knowing how far she pushed herself to help him. To save him. "I can wait for Her Majesty," said Killian quietly. As much as he hurt, he was incapable of watching Emma heal him at her expense anymore.
Footsteps on the staircase announced Snow, who walked down to the first level with a pile of blankets in her arms. "I found some blankets in the closet that weren't covered in dust—" She stopped, seeing Killian awake. "Killian! You're awake," she said with a smile.
"Aye," he said, giving her a strained smile back, even when it pulled at the split in his lip.
Snow laid one of the blankets over Emma, gently tucking it in around her. Killian watched with a grin playing at his lips. When she was done, she picked up another and turned to him. "I have one for you, too," she said with another smile.
"I don't—" began Killian, but she ignored his weak protest.
"You're shaking like a leaf," she commented with a crease in her brows, draping it over him.
Killian didn't have the heart (literally or figuratively) to tell her that his trembling had nothing to do with being cold.
His shoulder stung sharply again, and Killian sucked in a breath, quickly removing his hand. Fresh blood smeared over the palm of his hand. Killian shut his eyes in irritation, tired of being so bloody broken.
"You're bleeding," said Snow suddenly.
Killian opened his eyes, giving her a strained smile. "I'll—" His words froze, having the word live on the tip of his tongue. And from the way both Emma's parents stiffened a little, he knew they heard it too. "...be all right," he finished softly.
Snow looked carefully at his shoulder. He heard her gasp a little.
Killian blinked his eyes open, seeing an unreadable expression on her face. She looked at him, looking like it took her a moment to find her voice. "Killian… is this…" She swallowed before asking, "Did… did Cerberus do this to you?"
"If that's… the name of the bloody… hell beast," he whispered, "then… unfortunately… aye," he managed.
Snow's face fell in a mix of shock and horror. "Oh, Killian…" she whispered.
"Holy—" breathed David, eyes widening.
Handing David one of the other blankets she'd brought down, Snow said to her husband, "David, rip this into some strips. We can stop the bleeding at the very least." Snow reached for Killian's shirt.
"It doesn't matter," said Killian through a wince. "I'm… in no danger," he said, so quietly he didn't even know if she heard him.
Can't bloody die twice.
Snow's hand paused, hearing what he was saying. She turned a gaze onto him with eyes that held a million sad emotions. "Of course it matters," she whispered, looking heartbroken that he felt it didn't.
David handed her a few strips of the blanket. Snow took them, turning back to Killian.
Something inside him made him try again. "You really don't have to," he whispered.
"I want to." said Snow without hesitation. She smiled, a little wince in her face. "Besides, losing this much blood is going to make you pass out again, and the air can't be helping the pain."
Killian blinked.
He stared at her, like she was an enigma.
He was dead.
Bleeding out wasn't a concern—if it were, he would have bled out ages ago. The only thing bandages would solve would be suffering.
He still, after these past few years, couldn't wrap his head around the fact that he—Captain Hook—had managed to gain the care of people who would bother to stop the bleeding of a dead man.
To think that he would gain even the care of anyone after all he's done in his life, it was like a snowball's chance in, well, this bloody place.
Yet…
That concern in Snow's eyes was for him and him alone. And no matter how much he tried, he didn't know what to do with it. His whole life, he'd looked after himself, patched up his own wounds—even cauterizing his own arm after losing his bloody hand. From a young age, he had to look after himself, wanting to show Liam he could be better, that he wasn't the little brother Liam always referred to him as. Milah had shown him kindness and care but he never really accepted it, always hid his pain from her as much as she could because women were too precious to bear any of his burdens. Emma had been the first person he'd shown his cracks to, his weakness, but he never wanted to. One look at her crumpled in that exhausted form on the armchair made his chest hurt because no one should have to bother with his pain.
Snow's kindness reminded him of something he never had.
Something he hadn't even thought about in decades.
A parent.
He knew Emma didn't grow up with Snow and David, but Killian has watched them attempt to make up for lost time. Seen David's reaction when Emma had been freezing to death in Elsa's ice cavern. Feeling like it was a lifetime ago, he remembered meeting Emma in the Enchanted Forest. Snow had protected her with her life and more.
His own parents were long dead. His father hadn't even loved him. His mother never even knew him.
Something deep inside Killian, a pain that had been buried so far down he thought it no longer existed, hurt.
And right there, in Snow's eyes, was the closest look toward that kind of care Killian knew he would ever see.
So, he let her wrap his shoulder in bandages, holding in a groan when it stung.
Once in place, Killian tiredly opened his eyes, no longer feeling the steady stream of blood dripping down his chest and side, and feeling the fog in his head wane.
"Thank you," he whispered.
"Of course," she said just as softly.
"For… everything," said Killian, and in the way Snow's eyes changed, he knew that she knew the extent he was thanking her for.
He shut his eyes.
He had no idea what he did to deserve a second chance at a family.
And he had even less of an idea why they gave it to him.
All he knew was that he didn't have to wait for Regina to heal his pain after all.

assuage- is there something that makes them feel better almost every time?
For Roberts/Nite it's often getting out and moving a bit. They both love to dance, and that's often a good distraction, leaving them a relaxed sort of tired at the end of the evening. And Roberts will also whip out the Classic Hymns of 1899 Vol. 2 in a pinch.
For Jones, it's going for a walk under the closest thing to an open sky he can get in the Neath. For years he'd lived in a damp cell on the roof, and being in an open space with the Zee air in his lungs always does him some good. It wouldn't stack up to the surface equivalent, but it's what he can get, and for that reason he's contented with it.
propinquity- what is their relationship with their family like? how do they define family?
Roberts was briefly in contact with his sisters shortly after he'd left for London, but letters were not so easy to write or to send, and he'd eventually stopped writing. He blamed it on logistics, but in reality he was ashamed. He was embarrassed by his family, how provincial they were, unwilling to make the simple changes that would maybe grant them some respect or opportunities in life, that they seemed to have no desire at all to leave their village and do something else with their lives other than become wives and then widows to miners. He'd had the thoughts for a while, but his father's death from respiratory illness and was the catalyst for him finally deciding to run. The first letters were cordial, asking him to come home. Then pleading. Then scornful--that he'd abandon them, the cowardice from the sole man whose duty is to the family (never mind that he was still very much a boy). He never opened the last letters. They'd certainly dissolved into pulp in the Zee during the Fall. He has no kin, no wife, and it's better that way. It's a complication, a source of shame. It distracts him from his duty.
Nite has no memory of his family, but thinking on it too hard results in an overwhelming feeling of unease and shame. He tries not to think on it too hard.
Jones had a good relationship to his family before his imprisonment. He would get into the occasional debate with his brothers over politics and his activities, but they were all good-natured. In the aftermath, he'd lost contact with most of them. He'd broken their mother's heart and utterly ruined their name, one sibling had told him. He did not find Jones' reply to this that this was doubtful, considering the commonness of their name amusing. To this day, there's only one sister who still speaks to him. They correspond as regularly as postal delivery between the surface and the Neath will allow.
