Apparently in the city it means completely different things, but please… if you are out in the country someone is just trying to be nice to you. 🙏
A note, because not everyone knows this: if you're driving and another driver flashes their brights at you, this is a signal to be on alert and slow down. There may be debris in the road, a cop out of sight, or an animal crossing ahead of you. (Or, alternatively, your brights are on and they're getting blinded.) Whatever the reason, it's a signal that you need to focus and reduce speed. And possibly turn your own brights off.
This PSA has been brought to you by the four fawns that ran out in front of me at various points on my drive home.

Honestly, I am sure it is even worse for marginalized people, but in general interviewers seem to be the WORST.
In my head, any time I watch an interview or talk show I am mentally deciding if I would ever accept an interview offer with this person, as if one day, I might be famous enough people will actually be asking.
8/10 the answer is HELL NO.
I would crawl out my skin if someone made me sit on that couch for The Graham Norton Show. I might actually throw up on live tv.
Maybe it’s good I will never be famous. 😂 I would insult so many talk show hosts.
I’m always astonished at how well marginalised people keep their cool whenever they agree to go on Good Morning Britain because I think I’d last about two minutes (max) before I’d be asking if they know what a sentence is and would they let me finish one?

I don’t know exactly how or where this fits int to explanation of Calvary, but-
I DO know that a mounted horse division is kept in several law enforcement agencies (US) for 3 reasons:
1) More maneuverable than a car
2) faster than officer on foot
3) Far for INTIMIDATING than officer on foot, on bike, or often, for some reason, even in a car.
Like- a BIG guy with broad shoulders (made bigger by the bully proof vest) on top of a massive animal, staring down at you, is scary as HELL. Especially night patrol. This MASSIVE thing comes out of the shadows where you maybe thought there might be a person there. Think Batman intimidation tactics. Even if one of the officers gets down to talk face to face or to handcuff, one stays up there to keep an eye on you and let you know who’s in charge.
And then you meet the horse in daylight and they’re just the silliest guy. Sometimes the rider too.

Wait… is THAT where Luce came from?!
Cause that little icon felt like she came out of NO WHERE but if he was online and anonymously observing us all… yeah.
Little anime girl plushy to talk about hope totally makes sense. 🤔😂
Like- I know she was created by some marketing team, but I like thinking he came up with the basic concept based on internet culture. Cracks me up 🤣

Okay I’m currently furious that migraines are often so blindly easy to treat and I had to find this out myself at the age of 26 when I’ve been to a neurologist since I was 11 lol so I’m about to teach you two neat and fast little tricks to deal with pain!
The first is the sternocleidomastoid muscle, or the SCM muscle.
Tumblr media
This big red section is responsible for pain around the eye, cheekbone, and jaw, as well as some temple pain. Literally all you have to do is angle your head down a little, angle it away from the side that hurts, and then you can gently pinch and rub that muscle. I find it best to start at the bottom and travel upwards. The relief is so immediate! You can increase pressure as you feel comfortable doing so.
Here is a short and easy video showing this in action
The second is a fast and easy stretch that soothes your vagus nerve, which is the nerve responsible for calming you down. The vagus nerve, for those unfamiliar, is stimulated by deep breathing such as yawning, sighing, singing, or taking a deep breath to calm your anger in a tense situation.
You can stretch this out by sitting up as straight as possible (this does not have to be perfect to work) and interlacing your fingers. Put your hands on the back of your head with your thumbs going down the sides of your neck and, while keeping your face forward, look all the way to one side with just your eyes. Hold that until you feel the urge to breathe deeply or yawn, or until you can tell there’s a change. Then do the same thing on the other side. When you put your arms down, you should clearly be able to turn your head farther in both directions. If the first session doesn’t get rid of your migraine, rest and repeat as many times as necessary. I even get a little fancy with it and roll my eyes up and down along the outer edge sometimes to stretch as much as I can.
If you need a visual here’s a good video on it. I know some of the language they use seems questionable but this is real and simple science and should not be discarded because it’s been adopted by the trendy wellness crowd!
I seriously cannot believe I didn’t hear a word of this from any doctor in my life. Additionally, if you get frequent recurring migraines, you may want to see a dietician. Migraines can be caused by foods containing histamines, lectin, etc. and can also be caused by high blood pressure in specific situations such as exercise, stress, and even sex.
If any of this information helps you I’d love to hear it btw! It’s so so fast and easy to do. Good luck!

I love this as the founding of a “kingdom” that changes out rulers every 10 years. Ruler to be chosen by previous ruler based on character and good deeds. There is a STRONG spy network whose job is to mainly keep tabs on knights and other civil servants to make sure they are actually serving the ruler and people well.
New story- how do they get their first Queen?
knight who is constantly searching for a good and noble king to serve but cannot fucking find one for the life of him so he has to become the good and noble king himself.
and now all these other knights are coming around like "please let me serve you" and like obviously hes going to let them serve him thats the point of being a good and noble king but its also. very annoying. one of you become the good and noble king for once lets trade

YES. Someone who knows this movie!!!
I am surprised that as a “Disney with terrible accents” it doesn’t piss the UK actors right off, BUT… the plot is impeccable. ✨
Also- this is a great song to learn. 👍 You can do it in mostly rhythmic speaking with the occasional note and as long as you act your ass off no one will notice. 😉
Fuck wanting to learn to sing I Can Go the Distance - I want to learn Do It With a Flair from Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

As an American, I appreciate and agree whole heartedly with this message 👆
You guys ABSOLUTELY should have your own history of the queer fight be forefront and present, and be celebrating Pride when makes most sense to honor that fight inside your culture.
American culture does tend to overshadow everyone else, and it’s dumb.
So start parades during the better times. Put together flash cards and pamphlets and YouTube vids. If you think Pride in your culture should focus on different things? Then make a push to focus on different things! You are the queer community in your culture.
The capitalist cultural wave will only last so long as you allow that to be all anyone hears. Put forth a different message and be very loud inside your space.
We can’t control what the tv and cooperations will try to feed your country and culture. But I like to hope most of our community will boost your signal and back your play online.
We are meant to be celebrating diversity even when larger societal forces are trying to homogenize and simplify us down and make us palatable.
So give us some diversity to cheer about. Go. DO IT. Be the change you wanna see.
Please don’t be us. Please don’t try to be us, or allow your voices to be subsumed by ours. You don’t wanna be us.
As OP said: “Don’t accept American narratives as your own. You deserve your own histories.”
Honestly? No one knows that more than an American trying to figure out how the hell “Irish and Scottish and Italian and Russian” became “White,” and how to not be “that asshole.”
i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.
in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.
But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.
our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1989. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.
anyway, happy pride, americans. i’m truly sorry that most of you don’t see the negative impact your nation’s culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and culture’s queer history, don’t accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.

Would you accept, as substitute, Darktan the trap expert from “The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents”?
I think Vetinari's rats should have a Vimes-equivalent. Like, Vimes leaves the office after having an argument with Vetinari, and then five minutes a rat with a giant fuckass cigar comes out and has the exact same argument with him.

Fun part of this post-
Playing the “I know what post THAT one is from” game.
How many did you have?
shorthands for dumbassery that i have grown to love deeply
"how dare you say we piss on the poor" in response to someone misinterpreting your post
"_ isnt gonna fuck you" for suck up behavior
"woah. should we tell everyone? should we throw a party?" for who the fuck cares
"and what if the world was made of pudding" for when would this ever matter.
"and sharks are smooth both ways" for a group of people heatedly arguing with 1 guy who is fucking with them all
".. but its about a witch in the alps finding her lost cat" for someone trying to sanitize something to the point of absurdity

Just had a screaming horde of children pour into the Library (something about stopping in after ice cream) reminisce about being in the library club when they were younger, demand to know where the horse books and Percy Jackson books and books about speaking German were, and departed.
Some days I do so love being a Librarian.
I did find everyone a book.
Horse book girl is reading National Velvet. We will see how that goes.

See no, this is not Bruce’s fault.
His nearest and dearest friend in the world is Clark “Cuddlebug” Kent who is as affectionate as a touch starved labradoodle with anyone who has even once said “and this is my friend, Clark.”
Can he be professional in public? Absolutely. Ma and Pa raised him with manners and decorum.
But the minute he is in a “home” - any home, his, his friend’s, a third party they just met- his is glued to besties side like he is a dehydrated man in the desert and they are water.
Bruce, of course, knows that at least friendly pats on the back with the “chums” is normal, and apes that as his Brucie persona.
Batman is touch avoidant. The worst fight he and Superman ever got into was a mission where he was hurt and Supes would NOT stop TOUCHING him so he could breathe for a minute and asses.
So when he sees his brood cuddling on the couch with “friends” he’s is so proud of them. In his mind this is proof he didn’t screw them up too badly.
The kissing is new though. He may have to reasses some assumptions. And buy a few flags.
just bruce being oblivious to his children's relationship:
——————
Dick, cuddling with Wally on the couch in the family's den, whispering 'I love yous':
Bruce: They are such good friends.
——————
Jason, bringing Roy home one day for a family dinner, hands never leaving each other the entire time:
Bruce: They are such good friends.
——————
Tim, wearing Kon's jacket, the half-Kryptonian following him everywhere he go like a lost puppy:
Bruce: They are such good friends.
——————
Cass, straddling Steph's lap and kissing her face:
Bruce: They are such good friends.
——————
Damian (18), literally getting caught making out with Jon in his room:
Bruce: They... hmmm. Are such good friends.
Duke, behind him: For fuck's sake, Bruce.
Alfred, probably, somewhere in the Manor: World's Greatest Detective my ass.

Grief is so fucking stupid.
I watched my Father’s favorite Westerns the day after he died and laughed through them with enjoyment.
Today I put out Despicable Me for display at the Library and started to tear up.
He said it was one of his favorites because it’s about a Dad and three daughters.

So many people are coming in to the library to photocopy things like birth certificates and wedding certificates and social security cards and drivers liscences.
Most of them, yes, are visibly NOT WHITE. Some white people have come in too. Usually to do this for not white family members.
I never say anything. I do my best to act the same way I do when someone comes in to photocopy a news article about thier favorite child to send to the relatives. It is not my bussiness, I am just there to make sure they get the copy right the first time and don't waste too much paper. Or to assure them it's fine and I won't charge them when they do.
But man- I know I have a terrible poker face. These people have got to be reading the sorrow in my eyes while I smile at them.
Should everyone have copies of these things? Yes. Absolutely.
Is that why there is a huge uptick in people copying these things?
No. No it is not.
I live in a place with some of cleanest freshest air you can find on earth.
When someone comes in to photocopy a birth certificate these days, I swear for a moment the miasma of fear is so thick you can see the haze.

This book is so heart breaking.
It was a poem for his goddaughter
It is beautiful and full of ancient meaning and all the things a parent pulls out of thier chest in hope for thier kids.
What the hell Neil?
How can you feel this for one tiny little girl and do that to so many other girls just because they are grown up? (And not even grown up at that)
People are nuanced and complicated, and that is part of what makes good art shine so brightly.
But dear God in Heaven, please do not ever let me allow myself to wander down the moral road to that level of “complicated.”
I guess evil is what happens when you think because you are good and decent in one area of your heart, everything else you do is also good without reflection or critique.
I can’t read this book without crying now.
