ok quick summary of the events of the most recent hermittwt discourse. im probably done talking about it for now unless anything big happens

- past few days we'd been seeing rumblings from some hermittwt users abt how strange it is that people "sexualize" scar or ship scarian

- abt two days ago a twitter user made a thread calling the scitties joke "sexualization"

- another twitter user (twitter user B) compared scitties to homophobia in an attempt to convey how "serious of a problem" it is

- one user started going around into people's dms and telling them to unfollow mojo chojo (a artist and hermitshipper, notable for her work occasionally being suggestive; has long been despised by hermittwt)

- upon receiving lackluster responses (aka. "No") from a couple of people they dmed, this user started trying to call people out and claim they're shippers/support shippers

- at least one of the callout tweets was deleted after an attempt at genuine conversation, but the damage had been done

- people snapped. like i cannot undersell just how much so many people are sick of the weird bs said/done by some users over there. theyve spent months if not years harassing hermitshippers and continuously ignoring the mantra told us to by cleo herself (to block/filter and move on)

- many many threads and tweets started dropping, people coming out of the woodworks to publicly show support for the scitties joke and/or shipping. (generally it was the middle of the road "please we are not doing anything bad, you are not protecting the hermits, please leave us alone" take.) there were even some private displays of support, with people taking to dms to get in touch

- the overall impression I got is that "the strongly anti-hermitship views espoused by a minority of users do not reflect the feelings of all hermittwt, but due to the culture of twitter/hermittwt itself, many people dont feel comfortable speaking up at this time"

- longtime twt users have also called hermittwt out on hypocrisy, the way they make non "family friendly" jokes and then get upset when people make scitties jokes or ship hermits because shipping isnt "family friendly"

- someone told hermittwt they're just doing hermitblr 2019 all over again and linked my 2019 talks tag

- I wouldn't be surprised if we see another blowup soon-ish because I think a lot of people are at the end of their ropes

(Before anything I just wanna say that I don't like getting involved in ship discourse, it's incredibly stupid in my opinion but this actually really bothered me so I had to make a post about it, and this is likely the only post I will be making about the situation. I might also delete this later but I wanted to get my thoughts out)

Also, no shade to Dragonfruit shippers, I know not all of them are like this, but they seem to do this the most from what I've seen personally which is why I'm mainly talking about them.

I'm not sure if other people are dealing with this or if I just happen to be unlucky, but I keep seeing twt and tiktok posts about Spicynoodles being brothers and saying that the ship is problematic by Dragonfruit shippers and this kind of content keeps popping up no matter how many times I click "Not interested" and it's starting to get on my nerves.

It's so incredibly stupid, and not only that but I keep seeing Dragonfruit shippers say things like "if you hate Dragonfruit that means you hate sapphics", "people would like Dragonfruit more if it was mlm", "people who say Dragonfruit gives them sibling vibes hate wlw ships", "Dragonfruit is more likely to be canon", commenting about MK and Redson being brothers/cousins on Spicynoodles ship posts and more.

And maybe some of that's true, maybe some people who don't like Dragonfruit right now would like it more if it was mlm but maybe - JUST MAYBE - some people just have different opinions on these characters dynamics that have nothing to do with their gender identities or if a ship is straight or not.

Personally I think Mei and Redson have nothing more than a platonic relationship, she constantly gets his name wrong on purpose and bothers him whenever she can and overall acts alot like how an annoying sister/best friend would, and if I'm being entirely honest seeing Dragonfruit ship posts makes me a little uncomfortable, but I don't go around commenting that on Dragonfruit posts, I just click "not interested" and scroll and the fact that so many Dragonfruit shippers feel the need to start unnecessary conflict instead of just scrolling or even blocking them is absolutely infuriating.

Also the whole "people who don't like Dragonfruit just hate sapphics" is also stupid considering it's not even a sapphic ship to begin with, Redson is canonically a man and if you hc him as genderfluid, like so many other people do, or as transfem or something else I think that's great, you do you, I love seeing peoples headcanons for these characters. But that doesn't change the fact that he's a man in canon and if you're so delusional and captivated by your own headcanons to the point where you think someone disliking a F/M ship automatically means they hate sapphics then you need to get some serious help.

I've seen multiple accounts now in the lmk Fandom that exist purely to bash on Spicynoodles and Spicynoodlesshippers, constantly commenting on their posts about how much better Dragonfruit is and that MK and Redson are related because DBK and Wukong are Sworn Brothers so that means you can't ship them.

And this doesn't go just for Dragonfruit shippers - yes, this post is mainly about the Dragonfruit shippers who do this since I've seen them do it the most (atleast in my personal experiences) - but just in general, if you dedicate your entire account to bashing other people's (non-problematic) ships and instigating unnecessary conflict in what should be a kind, welcoming and supportive community you need to get off the internet and work on yourself before anything else.

It's just bi erasure yeah. People do not like us and prefer to pretend we just don't exist. This is coming from a bisexual man who on some days (and quite often) swings full into gay and feels no attraction to anyone who isn't a man. If you're bisexual you're something tainted—look at the concept of gold star lesbians. You're not considered "pure" unless you're a man who's never slept with a woman, or a woman who's never slept with a man. Bisexuals are too close to heterosexual and the queer community hates us for it, so at worst they're extremely biphobic (see the "Straight+" discourse from a few years back where people insisted that bisexuals were just straight people experimenting or some shit) and at best they pretend we don't exist at all 🤷‍♂️

In my experience gay men don't seem to care much if you've slept with a chick. Lesbians can be fucking vicious though. A lot of them REALLY hate men and any woman who's ever slept with a man is now tainted somehow, even if she's had to sleep with a few men to decide she's a lesbian. It's just radfem/terf shit (you know these are the same lesbians bitching about trans women). To any lesbian who's faced this shit, I am so sorry. Sleeping with men hasn't invalidated you, don't let those kinds of people get under your skin cuz they're not worth your time.

I don't reckon the tweet by Jay was necessarily a joke tweet—I think it's more that he'd like her to be a lesbian, said as much, but he's just one writer on a group project and doesn't speak for Valve. The tweet was deleted and I imagine that was done for a reason—imo it's most likely he caught some flak from Valve for it, whether because it was spoilers on their project or because he was speaking something as canon that they hadn't green-lit.

Medic is implied to be at the least bisexual though yeah—Demo mentions his wife in-game. Artists can draw what they like though, so I'm not taking non-canon art from an artist as canon unless Valve confirms it.

Honestly wish people worried less about "waaaah muh labels" and just enjoyed their ships or shut the fuck up. It's annoying lmao

V8 was when i first really joined the fandom/RG and it was rough. I was scared to admit I shipped it romantically for the longest time because of all the discourse/harassment and I know I am very much not alone in that feeling. For the longest time I was scared to even draw them kissing lest it incite something. But ffs I'm over it. This ship is cute as hell, has so much going for it in canon, and so much creative potential in fanon. I love analyzing their story and somehow still discovering old crumbs even after all this time. Not to mention all the new crumbs this volume has given us!! Feels more like a whole loaf of freshly baked bread than anything else!

Every single argument I've ever seen thrown against the ship in the last 2+ years has been made in bad faith, is a double standard not applied to other ships, or is easily debunkable. Some of the loudest RG antis have a terrible reputation even outside of our 'ship wars', and it actually become so easy to not notice or let it get to you when you block without remorse.

I can't really speak for tumblr as I've gotten not-so-good at interacting with people here recently and feel a bit disconnected from the community (aside from the stray asks/tags y'all send me which I always appreciate 💕). But I know on twitter we've had a handful of new artists and vocal shippers come out of the woodwork in light of the new volume that are flooding the tag with positivity, memes, and creations every day. I've seen multiple rival shippers admit that they have to 'prepare for when rg is canon' and they genuinely believe it. We've even got a few bigger RWBY youtubers standing up for us and shutting down that discourse when people try to stir the pot.

Also numbers aren't really indicative of anything on tumblr when reblogs are more scarce than ever, or on twitter where the algorithm is anyone's guess, but there are some rosegarden posts on this site from 2017 that hit over 4k notes. Some of my own rg pieces on other platforms breach 1-2k. Heck, even some of the metas that I have cross posted to twt have hit more than 600 likes.

There are so many rg shippers out there. And what I am seeing with v9 is a few things. First, any people joining the fandom anew that aren't aware of all the discourse fall into RG pretty easily without that bias being pushed on them.

And second, that when we are loud and we are enthusiastic and we are kind to each other... when we foster healthy and approachable community, that is how we tune out all the negativity, and that is when we have the most fun.

So i'm glad you appreciate all my yelling, and I am not trying to pressure anyone into speaking out or participating if they don't have it in them... but this is a very friendly reminder is always room for more of us out here 💕🌹🌲

The artist absolutely shouldn’t be harassed; no one should be harassed in that situation actually, people should just reflect on how they interact with the media and what is more important to them: having fun with their favourite ship or their moral superiority. Whenever shit like this happens, I always think about how they can’t be this delusional and not see how silly this discourse is. Like, what are you supposed to do? Stop shipping it (do you completely lack self-respect?) or start coming up with excuses (are you a hypocrite?).

Ideally, it should show to them that fictional characters being cousins doesn’t change anything. But in actuality, it only makes people confused and angry… and start doing stupid shit like harassing others or trying to prove that their ship is still somehow alright.

I really liked your post about shipping and I feel the same. I was on twitter the other day and a Jikook account posted that in 2020, dispatch wanted to reveal Jikook’s relationship. And when I asked them to give me the link to that article, they told to look for it myself. I made a little research myself because I was curious. I asked my mutual army and he told me that in 2020, dispatch posted that “two members in the same group were dating, and this group is well known”. They didn’t specify wether the group was bts or if the members were Jikook. This showed me how these shippers just change everything to fit their own narrative. Taekookers always claim that dispatch knows about Taekook but won’t reveal because the company pays for their silence. I don’t get how these people think. In JK’s recent Vlive, someone was heard talking in the background, and Taekookers claimed it was Tae, while Jikookers claimed it was Jk. It’s always a battle between these two ships. They made the fandom toxic.

I know what you're talking about, at least regarding the Dispatch couple reveal. I don't know if it was 2020, I think it might've been a little earlier, but yes, back in the day on K-pop twt we all heard about this announcement but it never came. Back then many people had theories, some believing that whoever it was, their company had most likely paid off Dispatch in hopes of keeping this relationship under wraps.

Now what I find to be a more interesting part about this 'Jikook' theory is that there was a 'leaked' Dispatch couple list screenshot, which revealed the names 전정국 & 박지민 among a list of other actual confirmed and genuine celebrity relationships. I see this screenshot all the time, whether it be on Tumblr, Twitter, TikTok, etc... This screenshot is often used as confirmation material. However, as someone who was very active on Twitter during that time, I had never seen this screenshot prior to late 2021 (and I'm a 2015 ARMY), so my only question is, where did this screenshot come from?

I think the problem with a lot of ship discourse on this platform is that people usually quote what they've heard in a shipping echo chamber. People are willing to believe this screenshot, but not one person can really cite where it actually came from. Like, have you guys been on Pinterest? BTS fans are scarily good at editing, what makes you think that they won't edit something like this too?

With the whole Jungkook Sleeping Weverse live, I've seen people pick apart the audio like you said, and half the time it's literal white noise. I feel like some of these people are clawing at their wallpaper like "THE VOICES! THE FUCKING VOICES!". For all we know, that could be a fucking mouse or something scurrying about and you just called it Taehyung.

Jungkook's other most recent live, where he goes out of the frame and starts talking to himself -- at least that one has legitimate audio. The first translation (Getting Bam bc Jimin left) that circulated around has been proven to be horseshit by other Korean translators, but some other translations, such as Jungkook talking about his light, moving his luggage, or Jimin possibly moving the light, have a little more veracity to them. Nothing has been confirmed and not even Korean translators (Jikookers or not) can agree on any particular translation -- and they shouldn't have to! Like this is Jungkook literally mumbling to himself, like, who gives a fuck what he says under his breath?

I have always stated that I have no problem with people having their speculations or finding certain pairings cute, hell, I even have an ask post in the defense of creative shipping (which I know some might find to be a bit controversial, but to each their own, no one needs to agree with me) -- but this, this isn't evidence. This is picking at crumbs and attempting to make a six-course meal out of it.

Tumblr definitely has a problem with shippers more than every other platform that I've been on. It's sort of nice that a user can curate their own content, but they also can't properly filter out or avoid the crazies that infest the website. Instagram is nearly on the same level, but to be fair, it's a bunch of fourteen-year-olds who still can't differentiate a hickey from a pressure mark left by a bag or by a member's own hand. Also, a bunch of people on IG still subscribe to bullshit theories by Taekook-lives (my sworn enemy atp), and I could talk for hours about how harmful they are to both Taekook and BTS themselves. Hell, they accused Jungkook of lying on his fucking birthday, and also they constantly misrepresent and abuse the Korean culture and language for views. Definitely gross.

But yes, toxic shipping has been around forever, and we finally got to see some shippers scramble with the Paris incident. Whether or not that event was real or staged (who gives a fuck), it was scary to see how conspiracies formed over night to try to dismiss any evidence that might prove the contrary. I have a few posts and asks over Taennie as well where I sort of discuss my thoughts and feeling about shippers and fans, not really about the alleged relationship itself.

I really fell in love with Cloud and Tifa when I played Remake last year and I’m so excited for Rebirth now.

I didn’t have a Twitter account because I could still read everything but now Elon makes it so it’s all limited if you don’t make one.

I’m a little scared honestly because I know how people on both sides of this shipping discourse treat newly made accounts… do you have any advice for trying to get involved? I really want to join in and share my experience and excitement with others who feel the same for Rebirth but I keep chickening out. If I had an ounce of artistic talent it would be easier haha.

It's probably better not to join. The place is a cesspit and unless you wanna wear the mantle of "good cloti" and constantly pander to "nice" Aerith stans (no such thing, they're all closet cleriths including a lotta zeriths because they just want Aerith to collect all the mens) then you'll get harassed and targeted. You will anyway because cleriths can't help themselves. They have to attack every cloti they see, but they're gonna be especially vile once Rebirth drops and their delusions get shattered again.

If you really wanna join then just make an account, make an intro twt and follow some cloti accounts like Manu or Nightmare. I'd also be a bit wary of which artists you follow because some render ones make clerith garbage so you can't just follow any artist.

When you play the game remember to # spoilers so people can mute tags. It's the worst when people don't tag properly. The best way to interact with the fandom is to use #cloti #FF7Rebirth #TifaLockhart #CloudStrife and just have fun chatting with people. I don't know if you watch 911 as much as 911ls or how active you are on twitter, but how do you feel about the buddie vs tarlos wars that are a constant thing? I see it start more from the buddie fans than the tarlos fans, because every time we get a new spoiler, picture or anything posted about tarlos at all, they always slide in to start talking trash and about how buddie is the superior ship. It can get quite irritating especially when most of the time they're actually complaining about the LACK of buddie/buddie screen time.

these fandom wars are exactly why i am not on twitter anymore. i have never unprovoked shat on buddie the way those fans do on tarlos. i tend to keep quiet about my opinion on this bc i know a lot of my moots and friends watch both (as do i) but i’m gonna say this very loud and clear as my stance on it.

if you support attacking fans of a different ship just to make yourself feel good or even worse, to make them feel bad, you are discrediting your ship and pushing apprehension towards it.

i’ve been watching og since day one. i was quite literally 15 when 1.01 came out, and i fell in love with the format and the stories and looking into these characters lives, and at this point all i see while watching it is how ‘buddie stan’s are going to have a field day with this’. i’ve kind of distanced myself from og bc of this, and i know a lot of people who have distanced themselves from ls because of a few toxic ls creators out there (y’all know who).

comparing ships is not going to get you anywhere when everything in media is subjective. i hate horror, my friends love horror. i’m indifferent towards buddie, my friends love it, and i will support them in that if they don’t fucking attack me for being attached to my boys.

fandom is based off of mutual love of a piece of art or media, and in my opinion, one of the biggest foundations of live should be respect. please just respect one another, regardless if they like tarlos or buddie, because they can have a favorite without discrediting the other.

tldr this fandom discourse is quite literally so exhausting pls put ur energy into something that isn’t bringing others down for their interests.

okay, so... there are so many things in those tweets i have issues with lol

the first being the judgment and policing. both tweets u shared w/ me have those vibes and i h8 those the most, in fandom space AND irl. just... why? let ppl enjoy what they what. I'm all about recommendations but not w/ this sort of disdain and condescension... they're just unnecessary.

the second is kinda related to the first in that it's all about preferences and circumstances... should be more open-minded and consider that, maybe, ppl LIKE actions and mysteries and whatever and the shipping is a side gig... we just happen to like the relationship dynamics between some characters within these media and we ship them.

honestly, ppl really, really need to learn to just not be bothered by what other people like.

the third thing being NOT EVERYTHING WITH INTENSE SAME SEX FRIENDSHIP IS QUEERBAITING. there are nuances to relationships beyond the typical heteronormative, allonormative, and amatonormative ones.

ngl but i never really understood why ppl thought some anime or drama are queerbaiting when friendships and kinships are just as intense, maybe even MORE intense than romance. and not everything is romance either, jesus christ... just because a relationship or a dynamic doesn't neatly fit with their version of how relationships work doesn't mean the creators are queerbaiting... relationships are so saturated with cultural and traditional nuances, even languages! and they can be very situational as well. idk why ppl insist on examining relationships from such narrowed lenses.

this site is so sensitive when i mention tae and jk together. like i even saw a tiktok naming their fav pairings and for everyone it was fine but when it was taekook they had to disclaim it was (pLaToNiC) was that not implied by the rest of your list?? ppl are so scared to mention them at all but if he's with another member its fine. its annoying and ppl are so transparent

i actually don't think tumblr is a primary suspect among the list of platforms where people move weird about taekook,.. but i'm speaking as someone in a little bubble of mutuals who are normal people lol. i also have never ventured onto the hellscape that is the bts stan side of tiktok so i can't speak on that either (besides seeing screenshots of people on there calling normal behaviors from jungkook 'red flags'... oof.) most of the bullshit, in my experience, stems from twitter where, like you said, even a simple mention of them hanging out together can end up with people accusing you of being a 'shipper' or a 'diet solo.'

this is going to be rambly so i'm putting it under a read more for the sake of not clogging people's dashes, but here are some of my thoughts on fandom culture/shipping in general:

oh real quick for for transparency sake, i'll start this off by saying: 1. i don't care about the relationship status of any of the bts members. they're single to me unless they officially and publicly state otherwise without any privacy invading force involved. 2. i have no problem with fans thinking/implying bts members are queer. lgbt fans finding comfort and comradery in their favorite people isn't a bad thing. :)

now for the actual post~

the fan dynamics on twt are so different and if you even mention taehyung and jungkook in the same sentence or say that they're very obviously close friends, you might end up on some of those 'defend [insert member here]' accounts where they encourage people to block and report for the slightest of 'offenses.' and like you mentioned in your post, that's over people talking about them platonically!! or over people who simply read fic without ever insinuating they think they're actually dating.

the puritanical culture that exists in very large parts of the bts fandom (and was present in the 1d fandom as well) is so weird to witness. we can all have differing opinions on whether or not rpf is 'good' or not, but unless someone is sending fanfiction to bts personally... it is harmless. and it will always exist. you will never enter into a fan space where independent, 'non-canon' content isn't being created by fans... and why would you want to? so much of fandom culture and history is about creation (and is also super lgbt centric!!)

in my opinion, the only people who still get up in arms about shipping discourse in 2023 are those under 18 or those who have no previous fandom experience. after stanning harry styles since 2012, i have heard the 'gay rumors made them drift apart!!!' argument so many times that it is genuinely nausea inducing. (and my opinion on that is... if you are that turned off by people possibly thinking you're queer to the point where it makes you end an important friendship, you either weren't very close to begin with or you're homophobic. likely a combination of the two. gay rumors are not, and never will be, offensive. they are not something you need to protect your fave from. why is this the argument so often touted by fans? why would you WANT your favorite person's self image to be so fragile that they end friendships over rumors? and that's not even getting into the fact that skinship and performance is built into the literal DNA - lol - of kpop...)

like. maybe i'm just too old to care now but i genuinely could not give less of a fuck if people think jk and taehyung are in a relationship. i do not care. they're both beautiful people who are clearly fond of each other. do any of us know how deep that fondness runs? nope! and we never will! and that's more than okay because these are grown men with personal, private relationships that we will never be privy to... as it should be. as long as boundaries are respected, i don't care what people think to be true.

can shippers get overzealous? for sure. do the people who analyze their every move need a new hobby? most definitely. but i think it's more than obvious now that the people who go to insane lengths to invade their privacy are stalkers or people trying to dredge up dating rumors between them and women.

it gets especially transparent when you have videos and rumors online about bts members dating people they've never interacted with publicly (using 'liskook' as an example, there are youtube videos with 10million views about them. one posted ten hours ago has 52k views) but i never see them condemned with the level of vitriol i see people using when it comes to jk and taehyung. is that not weird?

idk man. there's no concise ending to this post. fandom culture just intrigues me which is why i have so much to say about all this. it's especially interesting to me how it intersects with queer culture - or directly opposes it.

I don’t often block, but the straw that broke the camel’s back with the most recent block was just someone’s persistence ignorance and lack of interest in learning and improving, despite pretending to. Not even just of a craft, just of being a better, more personal and understanding human

A server entirely made up of Paul McCartney stans I was invited to and quietly observed for like 6 months before being chucked out for being inactive. I sent like one message — I was too scared to speak — and I don’t even like Paul McCartney past a general appreciation of his music. Not the worst as in a bad place, but worst as in I didn’t belong lmao.

I personally don’t think any fans are THAT bad anymore. Not bad enough to be mean about. Back in the day found a fair few shippers whose main ship has Naruto as one of the characters to be a right pain in the arse. But that’s only my memory of the old, bad shipping war days (from the sidelines) and honestly, it’s not that bad. Not bad enough to broadly label as annoying.

Not necessarily hate, but Sakura. I always found her just fine in canon but all of the pointless discourse around her absolutely drives me up the wall to the to the point where I see her name (outside a fic as a non-main character, which is rare for me, too) and I just groan.

Maybe it sounds dumb, but for me it’s just when people write Naruto himself. I can’t think of a single fic I’ve read where Naruto hasn’t annoyed me. He was already so precariously on the edge of bearable for me in canon that seeing interpretations of him is always bound to drive me nuts.

Alternatively, across various fandoms, bragging about how niche things are as if that makes them better. This always gripes me in fandoms: spaces that are supposed to bring people who enjoy the same things together. Of course please do like what you like and be proud; I’m happy for you that you like that thing, but the popularity or lack of popularity of something is no bearing on how much more nuanced, clever or deep your level of thought is.

I mean, I don’t think anyone in my fandoms is that unpopular. Maybe I just got good at not seeing bullshit, but nobody. My violence for this one is that there’s content for most things in this fandom to a level that reflects canon and that doesn’t make things “unpopular”. Less popular, maybe. But obviously your fave with 1 minute screen time or 3 lines in a novel isn’t gonna have an insane fandom following probably. Doesn’t make them unpopular, they’re just a nobody.

If I have to give a “proper” answer though, I say Rasa. Just cause I find him interesting and he’s perhaps not widely enjoyed.

The Togachako ship discourse on TWT is wild 😭 I’m seeing so many peeps go wild at each other, getting toxic and some peeps have even somehow managed to make it into BakuDeku discourse too. Like using it to bitch about BakuDeku shippers 🙄 which I know I get it they can be really annoying, loud and toxic themselves(not all of them though I have some friends who are BKDK’s and are chill)but wow some people really do just want to start ship discourse I swear! And it’s always the most popular ships at the centre!

Honestly as someone who’s not really into ships, like I have ships I like but I’m not invested in the ship side of things really! I really do feel like shippers as a whole are ok, but there’s toxicity on both sides but some of shippers etc do not want to admit it! IzuOcha’s and BakuDeku’s are 90% of the time are the centre of ship discourse, and I have seen toxicity on both sides and like not each shipper of those ships are toxic and loud! The bkdk fan base has been ready to fire for a while too which is even more ridiculous than this recent wave of shit.
