To everyone getting a new sewing machine, as well as everyone who is working on last-minute holiday presents:
If the decorative stitches on your sewing machine are coming out ugly, there's a few things to try.
Your decorative stitches are basically embroidery, so give the project the same support you'd give a machine hoop embroidery project.

Bobbin: embroidery bobbin thread is much thinner than standard sewing thread. This really cuts down on the bulkiness of the stitch. If you want your decorative stitching to lie flat, you want to reduce bulk. You're having problems in a satin stitch, where the thread piles up on itself, makes a knot, and stops feeding? Embroidery bobbin thread will help prevent that, because it takes a lot more embroidery bobbin to make a knot big enough to stop the feed teeth. It's also thinner, so you can fit more on a bobbin and need to change your bobbin less. Embroidery bobbin is usually only available in two colors, but it's made so that your top thread will wrap onto the back and look prettier.
Stabilizer: For any hoop embroidery project, you need stabilizer. You can also put it behind your fabric in a decorative stitch. This will keep the fabric lying flat, and support your stitches. Some decorative stitch patterns will have the stitches very close together, and many woven fabrics can't support that many stitches. Stabilizer is meant to provide that support. There's versions that tear away (my current favorite is tear-and-wash), or that stay in the fabric permanently. If the back of your project isn't visible, keeping the stabilizer in there will show off your stitches and make it more attractive. You can buy a single promo pack of tear-away stabilizer for like $5, and if you're only using small strips of it to reinforce decorative stitching, it'll last you a really long time.
Thread: If you're doing a project with decorative stitching, you might as well use a decorative thread. Embroidery thread, must like my dear cat Teensy Buttons, is very pretty, but not very strong. While you don't want to use most machine embroidery threads for construction stitching, it does decorative stitching really well. If you're doing satin stitching, the shininess of the thread will really emphasize the stitching. For decorative stitching that's composed of single lines of stitching, switching to a 40wt embroidery thread will make the design stand out more.

“Close your eyes, okay? It’s a surprise.”
The corpse looked at him with an eyebrow raised, suspicious smile on her pale lips. They were standing outside of his bedroom door, having returned not too long ago from their limb retrieval mission. The hand of the girl who had come onto him at the party on Saturday when he was too high to consent was now sewn onto the corpse with green thread, and after a quick trip to the tanning bed it was working perfectly with the rest of her body.
They had been so excited by the successful transplant that they had danced in the backyard, but then the corpse got an idea and dragged them both inside, gesturing to the piano in the living room and silently asking him to play for her. He did, plucking out the rendition of “I Can’t Fight This Feeling” that he had been learning for his dad, and while the corpse played with the piano keys to test her new fingers, he had snuck upstairs to prepare the surprise he had been planning since he discovered her messing with his mom’s sewing supplies the day before. 
Now, he smiled back at her, anticipation and excitement coursing through his veins at the thought of her reaction to what lay on the other side. He nodded towards the doorknob, and she got the message and opened it with her newly attached right hand, peering into the bedroom as he turned on the light switch. 
There on his desk sat a sewing machine, one that had come with them from the old house and didn’t see much use anymore, save for simple repairs. Next to it lay piles of fabric; old dresses his mom would never miss, scraps of fabric from abandoned projects and even clothes of his he was willing to part with. The set up was complete with scissors, a rainbow of different thread colors, pins, extra needles, anything he could find. He had even set up his Walkman with some of the tapes he thought she would like best so she could listen to music while she worked. 
Judging by the rapid, excitable squealing from the woman next to him, the gesture was appreciated. 
She raced over to the desk, settling herself in his chair and examining the sewing machine from all angles, hands hovering over it while she attempted to figure out how it worked. He grinned, walking over to her and leaning down next to her ear. 
“You like it? I don’t know if they had anything like this while you were alive but I didn’t want you sitting at home all day with nothing to do, especially since you have two working hands to sew with now.” 
She beamed up at him and he tried not to get lost in the adorable way her eyes crinkled, so instead he began to explain how the machine worked, having just learned himself a few minutes ago. He showed her the foot pedal and the dial for the different stitches, as well as how to thread the top needle and the bobbin in case the string got caught or lost. He saw her eye flick to the different fabrics hesitantly, like she wasn’t sure if she could use them or not, so he patted the pile and handed her the topmost piece, letting her run her new fingertips over the fabric to get a feel for the texture. 
“Here, these are all for you. Do whatever you want with them, they’re yours. No one will miss them, anyway.”
She smiled again-a radiant, toothy thing-before turning towards her new craft station and getting to work. He watched over her shoulder for a moment as she felt the different fabrics and started pinning pieces together before he decided to get changed into something he didn’t kill someone in. He took his new clothes to the bathroom, calling out to her that he would be back in a moment, but he wasn’t sure he heard him over the whirr of the machine. 
That was fine by him, though, he was just glad she was enjoying herself. 
When he emerged a few moments later, he saw her working with some dark fabric, sewing long strips of it together. As he watched, he noticed her brush her unruly hair (hair that somehow got bushier with every trip to the tanning bed) out of the way several times, attempting to tuck it behind the ear they had taken from his stepdad Brad, but to no avail. It kept falling into her face, and eventually she let out an exasperated huff, stopping her sewing so she could gather her auburn locks into her hands. 
She started braiding it, and he was entranced by the nimble way she managed to separate and weave the sections with her thin fingers. Eventually, she reached the end, and started looking around for something to tie it up with. He looked around too, and finding nothing in his room he told her to hang on as he sprinted towards the master bedroom. He grabbed one of the scrunchies his mom wore to pilates and brought it back to the waiting corpse, handing it over so she could play with the elasticity of it. After a moment of fascinated inspection, she handed it back over, looking at him from the corner of her eye with a smile, holding her hair up for him. 
“Oh, you want me to…?”
She nodded, and turned back around to give him better access as he took the braid from her hands, careful not to undo any of her hard work. He wound the red scrunchie around it as gently as it could, letting it fall out of his hands when he was done before taking a step back. 
“Better?”
She grinned at him, inclining her head in thanks before hunching back over her sewing.
He grinned back at her, unseen, and decided that observing her in her element would be more comfortable on his bed, so he laid down with his arm under his head, watching her work. A slight blush dusted his cheeks as he listened to the steady and soothing sound of the mechanical needles and her quiet humming and mumblings. 
He hadn’t realized he had fallen asleep until he was being gently shaken awake by a stitched-on hand. 
He blinked, vision slowly swimming into focus and locking onto the fond blue eyes of the corpse standing above him, her braid dangling over her shoulder. The hand not being used to rouse him was behind her back, hiding something from his view. He sat up, yawning. 
“What do you have there?”
She was bouncing on her heels, giving him a smile that made his heart swell before presenting him with a vest, made from the same dark green fabric she had been working with before. She held it out to him, and he took it almost reverently, running his hands over the expert stitchwork. 
“For-for me?”
She nodded vigorously, smile so bright it was almost blinding. She gestured for him to try it on, and he obliged, standing up and slipping his arms through the sleeves. To his delight, it fit perfectly, and the corpse flitted around him, making minute adjustments to it and smoothing the shoulders down. He watched her, dumbstruck. 
“How did you even get my size?”
She pointed to the pile of his old shirts that lay on the table, and he noticed one that had been cut up and clearly used for measurements. She held up a hand and plodded over to his closet, rummaging around for a moment before emerging with a pair of light blue jeans and his Joy Division t-shirt. She nodded to the vest he was wearing and he got the hint to take it off. She took it, folding it nicely before putting it on his dresser, giving him a look that clearly conveyed that she wanted him to wear it to school tomorrow. He nodded, utterly bewitched by her. 
“You got it. Thank you. That’s just, you’re just…thank you. Really.”
She looked down, playing with her braid sheepishly as her cheeks darkened. 
If possible, it made him fall in love with her even more. 
The sound of a car pulling into the driveway outside snapped him out of it, and after another grateful smile in her direction, he brushed past her to get to the door. 
“I’m going to go downstairs and play family for a bit, okay? If you want you can get changed for bed or keep sewing until I’m done, the machine should be quiet enough for them not to notice, especially if I turn on Bob Ross. And when I get back we can figure out some new sleeping arrangements, if you want.”
She blushed again and nodded before heading to the closet to select some sleepwear, closing the folding doors behind her as the front door opened beneath them. He watched her go with a lovesick smile before heading downstairs, ready to pretend like everything was normal and that he wasn’t utterly in love with the undead lady he was willing to kill for.

Must Farm musings, cont'd
As I've continued to mull over what I wrote in the last post, it strikes me that it'd be good to kind of inventory what was, and what was not, found in the settlement, so that we can more effectively speculate on what we can't know, which is: what actually happened.
Some things weren't found in the settlement because they would not have been preserved. Animal fiber textiles, for example; wool would burn differently than linen or lime fiber; the plant-based stuff was charred and preserved, but wool burns to a crumbly ash, and furthermore the ph of the mud was such that protein-based things like wool and skin would not have survived even if they were not burnt to ash. There were potentially as many bobbins of spun wool thread as linen, but the wool would not have survived at all, so we have no way to know. Likewise, certainly these people knew how to work leather, but there is no evidence of it-- but it would not have survived, and so there being no sign of it doesn't mean it wasn't there. Every bed could have had a sheepskin coverlet and we just wouldn't know.
(I personally think, if they built this site over the winter, and were there through high summer, but it burned in late summer or early autumn-- see the flax processing debris from late July, emmer wheat spikelets from July or August, but no hazelnuts or berry seeds?-- they didn't have much wool from their flock in storage. They'd've sheared them in the spring, though I'd have to look up Bronze Age sheep to be sure-- they might be the kind you roo rather than shearing? i don't know if we know, but it seems reasonable that the wool would be a springtime product, and so would all have been spun/woven by now, and they'd recently switched over to linen because the flax had come ripe. So there were likely many finished items of wool lost in the fire-- bedding, clothing, wall hangings??-- but not bobbins or in-progress weavings, that was all likely flax.)
Some things were not found in the settlement that absolutely would have been preserved-- buckles, pins, clothing accessories. Things we know from other Bronze Age artifact assemblages, preserved in other contexts-- often as grave goods. They would be there, if they'd been left behind.
So it's safe to assume that the people left wearing most of their clothing and normal accessories. Even a wealthy person of this era would likely not have multiples of accessories like belt buckles and shawl pins, so we can assume they'd have worn them more or less daily. This doesn't necessarily mean anything, except that the fire did not happen at night. They weren't rousted out in their pajamas. But that goes with my earlier conclusion, that they weren't home at all when the fire began.
(Why were beads left behind? Well, evidently, they weren't worn daily. Possibly they were part of the decor of the houses, or were incorporated into protective amulets over the door, or incorporated into some kind of altar-like area within the house, or something along those lines. Possibly these people had even more beads than what were left here, and did wear necklaces as part of their daily adornment! Possibly the other beads we've found as jewelry in grave offerings from the period are not representational of what people actually would wear, and they're ceremonial adornments! Maybe the necklace needed restringing and was hung up waiting for someone to take it apart and get to it. There are many things that we cannot know.)
And likewise, swords and other weapons. (There's a bronze knife, among the discovered artifacts, but it is for various reasons likely not to have belonged to anyone in the settlement. The older Middle Bronze Age causeway that runs straight through the site was a place where offerings were deposited, and the sole knife was one such offering.) But this could either mean that there weren't warriors living in this settlement, OR that the warriors had taken their weapons with them when they walked out for the last time and never came back.
As far as religion/spiritual beliefs, we know very little of course. But we do know a couple of things from the wider context. One is that culture-wide, there were complicated beliefs about death. We know that some bodies in that era were enbalmed or in other ways given ritualistic treatments immediately after death-- put in bogs and then later recovered, or defleshed with knives, or exposed to birds to be defleshed. There's evidence that some people were eviscerated soon after death, to slow decay-- a person's gut flora sort of digests them after death, to an extent (which leaves traces in the bones), and the people of this era clearly knew that and for their own reasons, sought to prevent it in some cases (which we know, from the absence of those traces). Fragments of bone were then curated, kept among people's possessions, and later deposited in other contexts. (A paper about this, mentioned in the Must Farm report, is here, from Cambridge University Press, published in Antiquity in 2020.)
The Must Farm settlement was no exception: the only human remains found in the site are just such curated bits of bone, most of them likely deposited during the construction of the site, or possibly even during its brief occupation. (This is discussed in chapter 27 of Vol II.) A near-entire human skull with extensive wear-handling was deposited near what we think was the gate of the site. The bones were radiocarbon dated and are roughly contemporaneous with the site. They also had been handled in ways that to us seem disrespectful-- one fragment of tibia had been gnawed by dogs, and had wear as if it had been trampled. Like it had been kept on the floor of an occupied house for a time. The near-complete skull was that of a youngish person, probably in her twenties, likely female, and she'd had her jaw and part of her cheekbone cut off right around the time of death, and had also had the base of her skull chopped around the same time to make it sit flat on a surface, as if for display. She was not a venerated ancestor-- at least not as we'd understand it. She likely had been dead less than twenty years when the settlement was built, though the radiocarbon dating isn't precise. And there's part of a human femur from just outside the palisade, worn and much-handled, that seems to have been deposited after the site was abandoned, which is really interesting.
Another thing we know is that pile-dwelling settlements like this were, in Central mainland Europe where they were quite common, frequently deliberately burned. The inhabitants would remove all their belongings, then they'd set fires in a number of places, piling fuel near the walls to make the fire burn hotter. They'd wait until it died down entirely, then come clean up the site, and rebuild over it. This was possibly a spiritual practice, but it was also practical: these kinds of dwellings are not terribly durable and are very hard to repair. It was just more economical to destroy them and start fresh, about every ten to twenty years-- much more labor-intensive to pull down the old buildings, and if it was a good site then the inhabitants would want to stay in the same place, so burning was the quick easy way to do it. (Interesting echoes of the southeastern European Neolithic phenomenon of the Burned House Horizon, but much more straightforward actually.) Must Farm's settlement was built in a similar way to those European ones, clearly not designed for long-term use-- many of the pilings were ash, which doesn't hold up all that well to alternately wet and dry conditions. The buildings would have decayed, would have needed repair within five years, would have needed major repairs in ten, would have possibly been beyond repair in fifteen. And the builders were experienced enough to surely know that.
But it made no sense to burn it down after less than a year, the wood still green and completely free of insects, and it certainly made no sense to leave so much in them, including the live animals. And there are no signs of the kind of deliberate burning found in those European sites, the extra fuel and multiple ignition points, so it's highly unlikely this settlement was burned intentionally. I really do think it was abandoned, and then immediately accidentally burned from an improperly-extinguished cooking fire. If this was done because of some spiritual or other belief, it was an unusual example. Perhaps there was something dramatic, perhaps some event the inhabitants interpreted as supernatural.
Maybe there was a really big spider.

spinning a sample of that Woolery Cormo mixed with some merino coffee thoughts:
a) I don't see people mention it much on here, but my favorite spindle spinning is bottom whorl drop spindle while chain-plying on the fly. (spin the single, chain it and spin the spindle the opposite direction, then wind on.)
it absolutely offers the most control for a consistent yarn for me, because
i) it's slow, leaving plenty of time for precision drafting
ii) because the spindle is stopped for the switch from spinning to plying, it allows me to specifically align the thinnest parts of the single with the fattest parts of the single when chaining
iii) every single length of yarn is a balanced ply sample, so it's the simplest thing in the world to make every single bit of the full skein exactly the same twist balance.
and it's rad to have a finished yarn first time winding off the spindle, no in-between bobbin or kate steps.
b) back to "a single lock is so much fiber and simultaneously a wisp of nothing at all" ...it is truly magical that we can take a ball of floof the weight of a small burger (1/4lb or 100g) and make a string the length of three or four american football fields. like, a standard sock yarn is 100g/400m and is three or four plies.
i) we could make a single that could encircle the earth out of maybe 10,000 100g floofs of wool.
ii) conceivably, there have been people who have spun enough wool to circumnavigate the globe. (27 years of 100g/day...totally doable if it's your job)

Shirt Amazon: You know how we said two to three days two to three days ago? Yeah...still two to three days. In unrelated news, got a text from my sister-in-law asking for sewing advice, which was lovely. Turns out she wants to make a cosplay and I was like...oh! Guess what I'm doing! I let her know that sewing patterns...exist? I dunno where the confusion was tbh. She's starting out entry level but I'm gonna be cheerleading up a storm.
Pants I keep switching back and forth between patchworking and embroidery to help keep my brain from falling into a rut.

So we're halfway through the second panel, and this little mandala is coming along quite nicely, and I think I mentioned finding the trick for the lazy daisy stitch before, but I was wrong. I actually figured it out now, and I was being really stupid with my previous method.
Accessories Keeping on with the Henry bracelet and I'm having so much fun! and look! It's a leaf!!!!! It's an oak leaf pattern!!!! Ahhhhh it's so cute!!!!

I also think I've settled on everyone's bracelet patterns now, so that's exciting to have settled. For the record, current plans have bracelets for: Henry, Mercedes, Lark, Terry Jr., Nick, Grant, Rebecca, Autumn, and one that Sparrow made for himself. Will it take me forever? Probably. Is that kind of the point? Yes.

QUICK AS SOMEONE WANTING TO GET INTO SEWING... Got any tips for beginners?? 🥺🥺

I'm going assume you mean like, with a machine, but there's also some stuff I can start you off with for hand sewing (which is also a fantastic and very necessary skill to have in my opinion!)
-Most sewing machines they sell at the store are the same, Singer is just the most recognizable brand bc it's the oldest. A sewing machine with the same specs in another brand is basically the same.
-Now, what those specs are is important for what you're doing. A basic sewing machine for, say, sewing lightweight or medium fabrics will run you between 100 to 300 dollars. 'Heavy duty' means you can switch the setting to add more power behind the needle because it has a more powerful engine to get it through more layers of/thicker fabrics, and it has a wider range of settings for different projects.
-There's also surger machines, but I'm not sure about those (and I can only assume as someone just getting into things, that's probably not what you're after, but if it is, you should talk to the clerk at the store or look up reviews)
-MIND YOUR HANDS, CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH EVEN IF IT SEEMS TO GO WITHOUT SAYING. THE MACHINE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT YOUR FINGERS. DO NOT PUT YOUR FINGERS ANY CLOSER TO THE NEEDLE THAN YOU NEED TO TO CONTROL THE FABRIC. FUCK.
-Adjusting the tension on the needle is a bitch, everyone hates it. If your thread is snapping for seemingly no reason, it's probably the tension.
-Some machines come with an automatic bobbin winder, which is nice. (actually, I think it's a standard for most these days? More research needed..) but yeah. Bobbins. They make the underside of your stitch line, which is important otherwise the thread just pulls through the fabric uselessly.
-Seam allowance is how much extra edge you give the fabric when you're cutting it out so you can sew it together. I usually got for about a quarter inch, which is about two centimeters? You may want more or less, depending on the fabric/ what you're comfortable with. Some fabrics ravel at the edges easily, so you need more seam allowance for a different kind of stitch.
-Pinking sheers are those scissors with the jagged edges (like those craft scissors but for Grown Ups) - this cuts the fabric in a way that keeps the edge from unraveling so easily
-On the subject of scissors, DON'T. FUCKING. CUT. OTHER. MATERIALS. WITH. YOUR. FABRIC. SCISSORS. I WILL COME TO YOUR HOUSE AND FILL YOUR SOCK DRAWER WITH SAND. Doing this will dull your scissors really fast. Don't fucking Do it.
-Machine loud....scary...BUT MUST NOT LET IT KNOW YOU ARE AFRAID

-There are a ton of fantastic tutorials on youtube for learning some basic stitches, but here here and here are some I find most useful.
-Needles also come in different sizes and shapes depending on what you're working on!

Big blunt needle: tapestry or darning needle. Used for weaving in ends in yarn, usually.
Small needle: basic sewing needle.
Curved needle: Good when combined with the ladder/invisible stitch for sewing two things together with no visible thread showing. The curve acts like a scoop in very taught fabrics were you cant angle a straight needle to get it through again.
-You're gonna want a thimble. You put it on the finger that's pressing the needle through the fabric, because if you're sewing for a bit, that finger is gonna get chafed from the point pressure.
-REST AND FLEX YOUR HANDS it's really easy to get cramps because of the small, repetitive nature of the action!
-you will see that one youtuber making god level outfits. you will be tempted to try that. I cannot control you, but I can also stand on the shore and wish you godspeed

Fiber arts... musings, I guess?
I kinda really want to do some flavor of Temperature Project(tm) in the new year - the classic blanket is out because I don't actually hate myself, but a scarf would be nice. Moss-stitch crochet maybe, or something of the like.
The other option would be to weave something; I'd have to do that at the end of the year so I don't tie up my loom for a full year, but I can track the numbers in the meantime, so I'd be down for that. The much bigger issue is that I'd either have to find a way to get 366 days (leap year!) into warp threads, or change my weft thread every 5 mm or so. I'd be open for suggestions for the former, but I absolutely will not do the latter. If I have to weave in 720+ thread ends, I will cry; and carrying them up the selvedge also seems like hell.
I also have a vague idea that spinning might work; if I end up going for a second spinning wheel, I could get myself some spare bobbins and just switch 'em out as needed. The bigger issue is - if I use half a gram of fiber per day, that'd still work out to 183 grams of singles, and while I could chain-ply that, I'm not great at it. And what do you make out of 183 grams of yarn, anyway? Probably a goddamn crochet scarf again. Though I guess that might also make a fine weaving weft...?
(I could also ply it with a single-color thread and have 366ish grams of yarn in the end - but still; crocheting tends to result in at least some waste so not every day would be represented. Am I taking all of this too seriously? Maybe)
Anyway, if anyone here has some thoughts or ideas or something, I'd love to hear them!

Bernette 79 sewing machine and embroidery machine review - initial thoughts
I doubt anyone reading this has "embroidery machine" money in their bank account, so it would be helpful to no one, but I appreciated other people putting in their honest reviews when I make big purchases, so I will post mine in case it would be relevant in society.
First, I got this machine because I wanted a computerized machine with more options than my Hello Kitty Janome sewing machine which has 5 stitches, no ability to sew a zipper, and the button hole function/zig zag stitch no longer works properly, making it useful only for sewing straight lines. Most people would advise, stick with the antiques or non-computer ones because of planned obsolescence with newer technology, a statement I would normally go by except my mom finally messed up her retro machine built into the table, and I felt the Hello Kitty was relatively cheap so I got more than its money worth out of it sewing costumes and such over several years. Time for a big upgrade. Also I have the money and still plan to do a lot of sewing if society doesn't break down into a post-apocalyptic Mad Max dystopia.
However, I didn't need an embroidery machine at all. I do embroidery by hand if needed for costumes, my mom taught me the basics, and hand embroidery looks perfectly fine from a distance. But what I do want is a good deal, and reviews stated the combo machine is an excellent bargain bundled with the super expensive embroidery designer software and extra doodads in the Yaya Han version. Not too big or complicated, but versatile especially for costumers, which I am.
So far, after using it for sewing some skirts and two costumes, lots of mending and simple embroidery, I would say I made a good decision. There is a bit of a learning curve in the sewing machine itself and a huge learning curve for the embroidery part, which I expected. The computerized machine does some things that are inconvenient to me, although I suspect this inconvenience is to prevent you from sewing over your fingers by accident. I do like the semi-automatic needle threader, it only works like 50% of the time and seems to shred the thread when it does work, but at least I don't have to struggle to see the hole to thread with my elderly eyes. The automatic thread cutter and the semi-automatic bobbin winder is also great once I figured out how they worked. And the variety of stitches and machine feet is reassuring, though I've only used a few stitches and two feet lol. I already used the buttonhole maker, works just as I had hoped. The sewing is smooth and fairly fast compared to the old machines, and seems to not have much problem with thick fabric, although I haven't tried really thick fabrics yet.
The embroidery function requires taking several parts off the sewing machine and switching out with other parts, which is a bit of a pain if I ever want to switch between functions quickly. Embroidery machines are noisy and require monitoring because sometimes the thread tangles over nothing, like molecules of air are too big sometimes. But I like the possibilities of embroidering tougher materials that would cause me pain in my fingers to try to push a needle through, or perhaps making multiples of identical items, like patches with text. The auto digitizer is not bad for simple designs, and if I had a really cool design to digitize, I think I can wrangle the software into working without too much trouble. Currently trying to think of original designs to digitize, though.
There is an extra cost of having to buy multiple colors of machine embroidery thread which is different from regular thread and more expensive, and lots of stabilizer which is required for smooth results. But I managed to get a bargain lot of new threads from a reseller online, and I found advice on how to sort of reuse stabilizer scraps (though I still have to buy rolls of it especially for larger designs.)
So far I haven't broken anything except one needle. I'm happy with my investment, and look forward to several years of sewing, assuming the world doesn't destroy itself by then. If you are interested in perusing sewing machines be sure to check @20dollarlolita !

Tour de Fleece - Days 13 & 14
Friday - Day 13
Thanks to the boss being out of town that led to a mix up at work where I ended up having to wait a few hours to get information I needed, I didn't get done until right before a gaming session (first one in almost 8 months!).
That said, my second attempt at getting the larger flyer for my spinning wheel succeeded! It arrived in that middle stage where I had a couple of hours to kill. Got it put together and onto the wheel...but I can't for the life of me get it to spin without the fleece breaking constantly. I've messed with tension,etc.
Saturday - Day 14
Tried again today for a little bit (had several other things going on in between attempts) and still not working.
So, I think I'm going to just switch over to the e-spinner (as I know it'll take the larger bobbins) to spin the Big Project. I'll try the newer flyer when I get to plying - hopefully that will go a bit easier. In the meantime, I've been looking up videos and such to help figure it out.
Hopefully, tomorrow I can get the e-spinner set up and start working on the Big Project: A Song Of Wool & Silk - Not Today.
On a side note, I've also been looking for a good color fleece to spin up to go with the Sapphire Skies I did last week. Still looking.

I was cranky today because my sewing machine is cursed broken. I knew the buttonhole function was broken but last time I used the machine it was making half of a buttonhole and then straight stitching the other side. Now I ask it to make a buttonhole and it does this instead

Sewing machines get kidney stones too I guess.
But that wasn't the end of it. It kept getting tangled thread on the bottom. I re-loaded the bobbin and tried again and it said "no definitely not and now you have to take me apart to get this thread kidney stone out of me." Broke TWO needles in this process somehow. One of which shattered a bit. And THEN I was like fuck it I give up on buttonholes let's just sew something else but the feed teeth stopped working randomly and I had to look up how to reengage the feed dogs/teeth cuz the switch for that is in a stupid place and AUGH.
So I've done three out of twelve buttonholes on this band tee crop top by hand and I'm full of rage and salt. But it wasn't all bad and I eventually cheered up because my splints came today!

I've decided they're steampunk cuz the thumb one looks like a contraption. Knitting with it on is sooo much better than knitting with the splint I got from the doctor. The doctor's splint gives the muscles in my hand pretty bad fatigue and people kept asking me what happened to my hand. This will hopefully cut down on those two things.
Gonna offer my sewing machine to Frigg. "Hey Queen here's a sewing machine for you. Her name is Tabatha. Uncurse her please." Can't afford to get it fixed so 🤷

washed and finished. this is the main bit in twill and the main reason i was weaving this piece. bottom left is fresh off the loom, all other pictures are of the finished cloth.
originally the goal was to weave a pattern sampler, both to see what i can do with my table loom both in terms of weave structures and with two colours. i also just wanted to plan and weave a fabric that felt right from a yarn i liked. i then remembered i didn't like the feeling of weaving on the table loom, sold it and readjusted the plans for my floor loom.
augh, it's so special to me for so many reasons so i want to put something here. this is a milestone. i'm just going to list up the most important bits for future reference as briefly as possible :)
specs:
started planning 3.11.2021 finished 9.1.2023 warp length 8m, prepared in 3 parts 8 ends per cm, 378 ends total 7 colour sequences in both warp and weft per weave structure 4 plain weave variations, 7 twills in the main bit plus some extra experimentation based on a book** as well as a tiny double weave bit 52 picks per colour sequence for the plain weave, 48 for the twills so 539 squares (rectangles really) in total and no two the same! (343 twill, 196 plain weave) mostly listing this because those are some nice numbers c:

planning for a structurally sound fabric based on a specific yarn

keeping notes this complete and updating them when i changed things

*yes, you can weave unbalanced twills on an old-school counter-balance loom. no, you probably don't want to. balanced twills however 👌 no problem
keeping a roll of paper on the weaving to take notes is inconvenient but comes in handy when you need to vent your frustration. i probably won't bother again except for when sampling though.
measuring instead of counting threads to know when to switch = golden
switching colour sequence mid weave pattern and keeping the weave pattern going is a no-no i will never plan for this again, i don't care if it disrupts the order of things, change the plan, don't do it, it is so unbelievably annoying, please
also maybe scale it down next time? or don't. but uh, it was a lot of firsts on a fairly long warp, changing something every ten minutes of weaving. maybe next time try being more compassionate with future self.
in case i do another pattern sampler, i'd add a third color to border and define the different areas in both warp and weft. i will not make it 8 meters long.
**the book is amazing. however, i only understand what she was writing about when/after weaving it, so i have no choice but to work through anything i want to learn
mis-matching the beat of colour sequence and weave sequence is both irritating and fun. what i mean by this is e.g. having a colour repeat of four steps and a weave repeat of six.
loom is set-up for finer yarns, because the beautiful heddles are fixed on the shafts, you need to put some thought and effort into spacing out the warp.
mistakes/issues:
the weavepoint demo version only letting you save as jpeg is fucking frustrating but understandable since their 60 day free trial period turned out to be a forever free trial period
selvages are a complete mess
the beginning is very slanted, must've had major tension issues without noticing
sides still bubbling up, despite best efforts
just. resist. the temptation of overfilling your fucking bobbins i beg you. resist! (set up a permanent bobbin winding station)
ropes holding peitschenstäbe cut into beams - should switch to cloth
need to make/find a glossary for german, swiss-german, french and english translations of weaving terms
should've weighed yarn cones in beginning and now so i could get an estimate of what's doable with the rest. oh well.
wind warp in even number of sections next time to make beaming easier
also (this is embarrassing) the raddle opens you fool.

They are embroidered!
You can purchase smaller home embroidery machines (versus big industrial ones) and either buy or make files for them. My first machines were Brother PE770s (started with one, bought a second after a while) but I think the current version of that machine is now the PE800? There's smaller machines like the SE400 series but I'd recommend saving up for something with a 5x7" hoop so you don't outgrow it too fast and make sure to shop around locally and online to find the best price.
The PE machines are embroidery only while the SE can switch between a regular sewing machine mode and embroidery mode but personally I'd recommend getting a separate sewing machine. There's other brands too but I've only used Brother machines for embroidery and Singer for sewing 💦 It's worth looking at local shops though to see what they have and what they can service as you'll likely be getting your machine serviced annually for tune-ups.
The other thing to note is you'll need to either buy embroidery files or make your own. I use SophieSew which is a free program but pretty buggy lol The creator had planned a lot of updates but then apparently passed away. I've still been using it for ~7 years 🤷 There are better programs but they can be quite pricey, I'd personally recommend avoiding programs like SewArt that can only auto-digitize (auto converts from a picture but doesn't allow any real control, often leads to gaps in the final designs). There's also lots of folks on etsy who sell embroidery files and some can make you files on commission! If you make your own just keep in mind you'll need to stitch out the test to see the final results- the programs cannot take into account all the physical variables so you need to run a physical test and see how it acts in real life then make adjustments based on that!
Besides the machine you'll need specific embroidery thread (not all-purpose thread) and 40 or 60 weight bobbin thread plus stabilizers to go under (and if a fuzzy fabric also over) your fabric so keep in mind you'll need to spend a chunk on supplies as well.
Here's a tiktok I made a while back showing the process for an AC charm commission (not counting making and testing the file lol). This one is made with my current machine which is a 10 needle semi-industrial but the basic mechanism is the same! Your files basically act as instructions for what the machine will stitch out.

I am in a really good mood right now. I'm really excited to go to bed. But I'm not a stupid exhaust as it was yesterday. I ended up going sleep around right after 10:00. And I woke up at midnight and then at 5:00 but I slept basically right through until 8:00 a.m. I needed that sleep and it helped me feel a lot better today. And while I still felt furious at my coworker sometimes overall I was having a great day.
When I woke up this morning I didn't feel great. Like I almost felt like I had a cold but I think that's just from the mustias of the air in here. And sleeping with a fan in my face all night. But I got up and I washed myself off and I felt pretty good. I had not thought it was going to be as hot this morning. So I put on the outfit I had planned and then I was like absolutely not I cannot stand how the fabric feels. And so then I switched to address and then I feel like that was too thick and so then I switch to the outfit that I ended up with which I ended up loving. I love these short overalls and this t-shirt was just very comfortable. So overall it worked out for the best.
I decided I needed to go for a walk. I went and walked to the office and said good morning to Elizabeth. And then I walked down past the nurse's office and ate berries and said hello to the children. I walked over to the nature building But Celia was not there yet. So I continued on to homestead to say hello to the animals. I went and pets the birds. The duck bit me. And then I pet the goats who were very sweet and just wanted me to feed them but I had nothing to give. And as I was finishing with that I heard Celia was calling for me so I backtracked to meet her.
We walked to the past that I was planning on taking to see if the mushroom from yesterday was still there. It got very very tall but it had fallen over. I think the top was just too heavy. And we continued our walk to look for more.
I came with her to the office and we were able to get some information and I needed to get Keith's email so I can send him my proposal for our Native American natural resource projects. And then we continued back on the path I originally taken to look for more mushrooms and berries.
I would come down to the nature building with her to see the frogs and watch her feed them some worms. But I did have to come back up to the art building to do my job.
So I came back here and I wound a bunch of bobbins so that I wouldn't run out. Tatiana was already up here and it was nice to see her. I am very worried that she's getting scammed on the internet because she was telling me about an app that was going to pay her $15,000 and I was like that sounds very fake. She said no it's real we're filling out surveys and I was like okay scam please don't give them your bank information. We had a really nice day. She would cut extra fabric for me and I would get some stuff done that needed to be completed for finishing up our projects. And then we just waited for our group to come. I had a yogurt and read my book. It was too warm outside but it was nice in the building.
Our first group would be late. Not shocking. I just kept reading my book. And wants the kids came to work great. I did kind of get upset though because I found out that they were making sewn pouches over in American craft. And I'm just like what. So I'm glad I switched to machine sewing because that made me really mad that they had already done the project even though I plan my projects months and months in advance. And I just felt very annoyed because then when woodlands came and Jorge was with the group he normally loves arts and crafts but then he didn't want to do it because he had already done it and that just hurt my feeling so much. Like I know it doesn't matter but I just feel bad. I want everyone to really enjoy my projects. And while I feel like this project this week was really successful it just hurts my feelings that they will basically doing the same project twice when I was the one that came up with the project first. At least they're getting to use a sewing machine which is different. Thankfully I don't think any of the projects for the rest of the summer are going to have that issue but it still makes me angry. Like I work so hard and it's just like oh cool All of my hard work is just for nothing. I know it's not nothing but man doesn't feel that way.
I had trouble getting my pioneer group to leave so I could go to lunch. But eventually they did and I headed down there and I'm glad I got there when I did because for some reason lunch was all messed up so they were giving us leftover. There was no vegetarian option and they had egg sandwiches with pork sausage on it. And I was like okay I'll just grab one of those and take a sausage off. And then I heard from the other staff that by the time they got down there they didn't have any of those either and so it was just tater tots and salad. So at least I had some protein because I would have been very upset. And honestly it broke my stomach anyway so it wasn't like it actually mattered.
I kept reading my book and enjoyed the rest of my break. I'm leaving the outside hammock and it was just really nice. And my afternoon groups were lovely. I had two day camp groups and they were both really good and they did a really good job with the project. I was not thrilled with some of the counselors who were just not engaged with their kids and I had to ask them to go outside and not just lay their heads down on my table in here. I understand it is 90°. But you have two sweatshirts on. I do not know why you are wearing sweatshirts none of your clothes are particularly camp appropriate. And one of those counselors would end up throwing up from the heat later on and they were like I don't understand why I don't feel good. Maybe because you have two sweatshirts on. We need to connect some dots here.
I had a lot of fun with tipis. A few of them wanted metal casting project. And they did such a good job. We were able to do a few open-backed ones which I have not had success with yet so that was really cool. PJs came out so good. It took like two or three tries but we did get it and it looked awesome. And I think we have a better handle on what works and what doesn't with this material. So I think the next week that we do it will be super successful because this works so well. I am for sure going to need more metal though and I talked to the office and they're okay with buying two more pounds to get me through the rest of the summer which I'm hoping to only do tomorrow Monday and then one more week. And then let some counselors do it that really wanted to try it. I'm really excited though I really love getting people into this very specific time I love so much and I'm really excited that I'm going to be able to hopefully continue using this type of material. I'm going to try to invest in some high temp mold making material to see if I can cast any of my own sculptures and just see what happens because this is really exciting. It's a new thing for me. In an old way. An old thing that's become new.
I would enjoy my break and during the break we were chatting in our special staff group chat about how hot it was and I suggested that we all go swimming at 4:15 anyone who was available. And Celia said that she didn't have a bathing suit and I was like you should come anyway and then she was like look at Rosie the snake she is shedding and I was like can she come in the pool with us and she said not what she shedding and I thought it would be funny to Google a picture of a snake in a bikini but it turns out that it's just all porn when you search that. I don't know why. We were all like freaked out and being like oh no oh no! People are so weird.
But the swim was so good. I made my group leave as soon as humanly possible. I may Tatiana clean up her brushes and Kieran came and was sitting in the building playing my drum and I was like it is swim time and said goodbye to everyone and got over there so I could get changed and the pool was perfect. They were finishing up their free swim and I was like perfect no children. So we had like 20 minutes before they started pool canoes. And I just enjoyed being in the cove and then kind of doggy paddling around because I didn't want my hair to get too wet. Celia jumped in the pool with all her clothes on which was very funny. Ty just likes to float so he stayed in the water until people started splashing too much. And we kept joking about how You're not even going to stay to play mermaids?? We were in the water for a while and then Antonio who had joined us was like huh do I have a group. And we're like do you have a group? And it turned out he did. And so he quickly changed and ran down to the climbing tower but his group was still 10 minutes late so it didn't even matter. But it was very funny that he forgot that he had a group. It was like a really healing swim. Just talking to my coworker so I really like and the water was perfect and I was just really happy. Things felt very good. I got a shower and it was a very good shower. And I really liked my romper that I put on afterwards and I just felt really good about everything. I was in a really nice mood.
I came back up here and read for a while. And then I took my book and I walked down to the lodge so I can wait for dinner.
I ended up just taking two rolls and then I couldn't eat any of the other food anyway because it all had onions in it so I just had scalloped potatoes in my rolls and talk to Cody for a few minutes but then it was too hot in there so I left.
I walked to the office and sat in front of their air conditioning unit and read my book for half an hour. I waited for the Kona ice guy to come. I wanted a snowball. I get them every Thursday and I wanted it right away. So I waited there after checking with Alexi if he was still coming. And I was there when a couple people happened to the door to drop off packages. I really am enjoying my book too. I'm almost done with only 60 pages left. And I really like saying that I finished 6 books so far this summer. Yes they are all under 200 pages but they are still books and I still read them. The next book I'm reading is much longer. So we'll see if I'm going to finish that in one go or if I'll do some short ones in between. I'm not really sure what the next one's about I just read a review about it that said it was a very good read so I'm going to try it. We'll see what happens.
I got my Kona ice though and I went up to the art building to chill in the hammock. Eventually Ty would come and join me and when he saw that I had a snowball he ran down to get one too and he also got pina colada and so we had a little moment. And soon CJ would join us. And she had kind of a hard day so it was really nice to all sit and talk together. There was definitely like moments where we were all trying to figure out how to have a conversation together because we've never done that but by the end it was really good and we talked about some of the weird stuff that's been happening in how especially staff has to stick together because we get othered so often here. And eventually CJ saw how beautiful the sunset was and she was like we should all go to the field and watch it and so we did and then we chased fireflies for a while and it was just beautiful little moment.
Eventually a camper was in the field who needed to be walked as a group so we all walk together to the council ring to drop her off for the talent show. And then we quickly ran away like literally ran away. And we were giggling and it was really silly. We will come back up to the art building and we sat for a while but then Ty was like he needed to go take a shower. So we said good night to him. And CJ stayed behind and she did her tarot cards while I read and We talked and it was just a really nice way to spend the evening. Though I was getting very tired and my social battery was a little low so once she finished her cards we had a big hug and then we said good night.
There were too many beetles in my building so I Left the doors open and went to use the nurse's bathroom and hope that the beetles would be gone. They were not. But the single calm down and they're not bumping into everything anymore.
Now I am and I am very much ready to go to sleep. I brushed my teeth and I am texting my James and I'm pretty comfortable and the temperature seems to be dropping. It's supposed to storm really bad tonight so I think I'm actually going to pull my headphones down just in case. Supposed to storm all day tomorrow too. So we'll see what happens with the day. I hope it's nice even if it's stormy and weird. I hope it's exciting. I hope that the kids are good and we all have a lot of fun. Sleep well everyone. Take care of yourself! Until next time.

Yesterday I got an Electric Eel Wheel Nano from FB marketplace and spent all evening trying it out on a fractal spin project and my heart is so fucking happy. This little machine is a DREAM to spin on. I still love my wheel of course, I can’t spin thick art yarn on this and there is something so pleasing and satisfying about using a wheel, and I’ll always love the rhythm of my spindles, but this cute little thing filled that last little spinning niche.
It took me a minute to get over the fact that I couldn’t slow my feet when the fiber drafting was going less smoothly but I got over that super quickly and just had a lovely evening spinning away. And you can spin so fine on this guy without any hassle at all, no switching whorls or fiddling with tension or reattaching the drive band etc, it just handles it naturally with the turn of a knob.
I also appreciate it from a design perspective. The teeny magnetic orifice hook, the super easy tension, the plastic sliding hooks, the super adjustable speed dial, the ability to switch from S to Z spin with a switch and and the ease of bobbin swaps was just *chefs kiss*.
AND DID I MENTION I CAN TAKE IT ANYWHERE? It runs just fine on my solar power bank and it weighs next to nothing. I have everything I need to spin in a standard lunch box.
I’m sure there are better electric wheels out there, and I don’t think they even sell this little guy anymore but I love it so much.
I’m not selling this or promoting anything, I’m just super fucking impressed.

After a long debate and one misspelt poll name (minon -fish) the rival is named! Wallow, the evil version of Willow who is Definitely Real and Willow totally didn't just commit those crimes. Totally. Yep. Awesome.
The rival's creature is name Potodile.... cute creature with pot on head
One time, it didn't talk to it's ingame mom before leaving and it felt so bad that it reset the game. That is a canon thing that they said. honestly real and canon.

tbh i had to go get water and missed Poke Bowl's catching, but we got Poke Bowl the Metapod with only Harden! How fun :) + 1 Pokemon!

Soon after, Willow caught a Spinarak! Between the choices Bobbin and Spindle, it chose Bobbin! Personally, this guy is my favorite thus far :) + 1 Pokemon!

Then, we arrived in the Belsprout Tower! Thing! (idk ive never played HGSS) and caught a silly Ghastly! Dimple! Well, silly sure is a word for it. Watching this thing being animated was... interesting. :) + 1 Pokemon!

After a quick almost-death with Moe Wings, Willow dives into the gym! Falkner makes a great show of how bird pokemon are superior and then gets his first pokemon absolutely DESTROYED by Moe Wings.
Attempting a switch, Dimple is brought down to 4hp after a single gust. Swap out into Kettle, a few close-calls, and then the first gym badge is Willow's!
