(1) -Yes, I am that kind of artist. Yet, not in the conventional way. I encourage people to go in guns blazing when it comes to drawing something new, then coming out analyzing what they know, and what they need to learn more of right away.

-Here, I broke down the anatomical pieces of Nour and Narinder's face with the same labels so you guys can understand this weird invisible pattern that I follow in my work. Doing this with any animal you're attempting to draw greatly improves your line confidence when drawing different face shapes. Also understanding the biological function for why animals look a certain way helps you keep consistency.

(3) Time to throw any artistic guilt you have for heavily referencing people's art OUT THE WINDOW and start ANALYZING PEOPLE'S WORK YOU WANT TO BE LIKE✨ I've always done this, having a reference of someone else's amazing work right next to my own drawing so I can try and understand how they make their magic work! No shame, no embarrassment, nada. Pure, unadulterated will and spite that I would be just as good as the artist who made me so motivated and happy with their work! I couldn't figure out how to make Nour's face both sheep-like, and humanly expressive, so I looked at a LOT of Zootopia and old Disney art for help!

(2) With how I draw narilamb, I'm still working on it (as you can see) but I wanted to break Narinder's face to be fluffier and slimmer, while Nour's face would be shorter and flatter. If you look at it for too long, it's absolutely going to look weird, in the way that if you look at Anna from Frozen for too long she starts looking really weird. The anatomy isn't meant to be correct or consistent, it's meant to convey the emotion and energy I want out of the characters in that moment. If you're able to properly get that across, then you don't need to think about how broken something looks, as long as your eye is happy enough to trick your brain into thinking what you're seeing is canny.

(4) Yeah, I hate this part too. It's going to look like shit at first. I can't even look at my art from a few months ago when I was figuring out their designs... God, so fucking ugly. If it weren't for the shittiness of those drawings, I would have never gotten here! Wading through the "trust the process" stage always really sucks, but it's absolutely worth the relief of when you finally get something to look right.

(5) Art is work, yes. It's stressful, it's long, it's straining, its draining, it's exclaiming, blah blah blah. But, I try to keep my art FUN. If I find my artwork becoming slow as I depressingly drag my pen over my tablet, I'm failing. You MUST keep spirit and life in your work. The spirit of emptiness or the life of sadness can have a very meaningful place in art, but those can only exist with keeping work light, easy, and fun! If you're stressing how a specific thing looks or how you can't get something to look right no matter what, FUCK IT. Draw something to bring the flavor back in your work! I'm kind of rambling, but just, HAVE FUN!✨️ Be messy, scream, laugh, slash canvases, throw paint, smash sculptures, tear apart books, GO CRAZY

I looove drawing hands, but they're as fun to draw as they are difficult 👌👏

Usually when I draw, I don't go for perfect realism/anatomically correct, I mostly follow whatever makes the drawing look good, with exaggerated shapes, sharp angles, etc.

Drawing with references is the best advice I can give you!

When I struggle to draw hands I usually just look at my own hand and try to copy it (I have a small mirror next to my computer to make it easier), it works, but it's not always the best option. If you want to improve quickly, find some pictures and practice by drawing them!

A lot of websites have a built-in timer for studies, here is the one I used for this one for example:

I will sometimes complain that I don't make much money and someone who is very well-meaning will advise me to 'learn to code.'

That's like telling someone to 'learn to draw an anatomically correct hand.'

I'm pretty good at drawing hands because I drew throughout high school, did art programs in college, and continued to draw consistently as an adult- so I developed a knack for drawing complicated things.

There are a lot of people who cannot draw hands. It doesn't make them bad artists, it just means that they didn't focus on the same things as I did. And if they focused on drawing hands, maybe they'd get pretty good at it, too.

But also maybe they wouldn't! Some people just don't! Like they can study and sketch the bone structure and the guidelines and the forms to hell and back but turning it into a hand just isn't happening.

That's me with code. I know enough html to hotlink some text and turn it into fun colors. I tried to learn some code in college because we were told that it would be required of us in our professional lives, but I did not get very far. Its not because I'm lazy, or that I had a bad teacher, or that I don't WANT to- my brain just does not do numbers the way that coders do numbers.

I watch my photography mentor in one of her zoom meetings rattle off coding terms and I'm jealous. My brain can't do that. She watches me sketch out compositions and maps for photoshoots from memory and she's jealous. I watch my girlfriend cut an old prom dress into pieces and sew it back together into a costume and I'm jealous. She sees me dance in it and she's jealous.

Like I understand that this is the direction of the world- that coding is a very important skill that pays well because its in demand (or is it? I've had so many coding friends get laid off in the past year that it makes me nervous) but I don't see the point in learning a skill that I know will frustrate me, that I will not be good at, and that I will inevitably be the first to be let go if I manage to get a job in the field.

Some Incisaur stuff. This isn’t the full monstiary page for it, just some colored sketches so there’s less solid diagrams to go with them as I was just drawing Incisaurs for fun. But you guys still get some biology facts about them.

I imagined that they’re amphibious monsters that are surprisingly good at moving both in and out of water, and they have a taste for fish. They are mainly based off of pythons and crocodilians biology-wise with anatomical inspiration from green iguanas and leopard geckos along with the previously mentioned animals.

To be able to see in the water their pupils can expand so much that the iris is no longer visible so they can take in as much light as physically possible while underwater like seals or sea lions. It looks quite funny as their usually piercing golden eyes take on a more googly appearance which make it look, like, something.I don’t know they’re still quite intimidating to me with those pitch-black eyes and the toothy grin I’m not entirely sure what it does to their appearance but it’s surely something.

Like pythons, the little grooves on their upper “lip” are infrared sensors that allow for Incisaurs to see heat which helps during hunts, both in and out of water. It also assists in detecting potential threats as cold island is one of the few locations in the monster world where there are critters that are capable of eating full grown monsters in the form of polar bears. I don’t have a recent/good drawing of them, but just imagine a very large and more anatomically correct version of the polar teddy bear from dof and you probably got most of it. In an attempt to ward off these potential predators, Incisaurs developed a striking blue tip to their tongues in a similar fashion to blue tongued skinks. Unfortunately for them, the blue color is only shocking if the rest of you isn’t already covered in blue spots so it’s actually quite a poor defense mechanism. Luckily they are smart enough to not get eaten and the blue tongues stayed as a useless but rather cool looking trait.

You may notice that their teeth are just hanging out of their mouths. In real life their teeth would get very damaged by exposure to the elements and dryness of the outside world. To deal with that the excessive drooling Incisaurs exhibit keeps their teeth moist and healthy, along with them being constantly replaced every few months. Their teeth are also a lot less wobbly than they are in cannon, they can bite down on things like this baby one holding a fish in its mouth.

yes hello, merry christmas, i'm answering this now just in case i accidentally forget to get back to it tomorrow-for-real

first off this is extremely funny. i am way less confident with drawing muzzles than you think. case and point:

second, i did answer this a few years ago? you can see it here, and i do still stand by those tutorials i linked! at the very least they're pretty good to follow if you're the type who wants to get actual anatomy down first before stylization

third! i can still share a bit of my thought process when drawing them, bc why not! may as well, and if it helps then hey! that'll be something

i think the most important thing to keep in mind is that the nose will almost never be in the direct center of the face. short or long, the nose will always stick out at least a little bit since faces that are canid or feline are longer than people faces. the corners of the eyes also tend to line up with the corners of the nose

when drawing them myself i tend to eyeball/wing it irt placement (and also disclaimer: i tend to draw canid muzzles shorter just cause it flows better with my style. anatomical correctness is important to a fault, but do not be afraid to mess around with lengths and see what fits a design/your own tastes best!). but when i was trying to get the gist of it i used one/both of these little guides:

first: circle guide

tends to look something like this? it's just there for you to get the general placement of the muzzle down before adding more specific details like length or other distinct physical features

second: triangle guide

you know that little note about the bottom corners of the eyes lining up to the corners of the nose? this is what i mean by that

also re: tracing to practice! good way of seeing these things in action yourself! (you can do the same for cats and ESPECIALLY big cats, since they tend to have much more prominent muzzles than domesticated cats)

Bigger, Scarier, More Teeth

Paleontology is, by its very nature, a very speculative science. For most of its history, we've only had fragmentary remains of ancient animals that sometimes have no easy modern day counterpart to compare with. Of course, the field is also good at self correcting these errors, which means our image of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures is constantly evolving. While admittedly we may never know with 100% accuracy what these animals were like, we can certainly narrow down and tweak our perception to come up with the closest possible image.

Then...there's instances where dinosaurs were deliberately modified. Not a case of misidentification mind you. Cases where the animal was physically altered in order to seem more impressive or threatening.

Case in point: the Giganotosaurus from Jurassic World Dominion. One of the most recent examples, the Giga was depicted with a row of spines running along its crocodilian esque back. Naturally, we have no evidence of these in actual specimens and was probably added to make the final big carnivore of the series look more threatening.

Admittedly I'm not gonna harp on too hard about this since there is a difference between a fictional portrayal and something that's supposed to be accurate and the Jurassic Park series isn't really known for its accuracy. This is honestly just a bench mark for what we're working with and a notable and recent example.

What's a bit more headscratching when said altering happens in more scientific portrayals of dinosaurs.

Take shrinkwrapping for example. For decades, shrinkwrapping was the standard fair in portraying dinosaurs. What it involved was basically showing visible bone structures underneath the skin of the animal.

The results were...

...basically skeletons with skin stretched over them.

The idea, as pointed out by Mark P. Witton in the link above, is not just to portray them as fast, agile, bird like animals, but also matching a popular but inaccurate depiction:

Secondly, images of prehistoric animals as heroically-built, powerful beings are preferred by many merchandisers and palaeoart fans, these interpretations most closely matching the erroneous but popular portrayal of prehistory as a savage struggle for survival, where only the most powerful animals survived.

Thing was, these depictions completely ignored the muscle and tissue underneath the skin which gives the animals more bulk in favor of portraying them as more intimidating. Which in retrospect didn't work since if a dinosaur looked shrink-wrapped in real life, it probably was starving, ill, or basically on the verge of death.

In contrast, there are some artists that go the complete opposite direction. As is the case with David Peters and his...unique look at pterosaurs.

David Peters, a once respected independent researcher and artist, once claimed that he was able to identify hidden features and anatomical structures in pterosaur remains that no-one else had been able to identify. These include elongated fleshy crests, spines, and extravagant feathers.

The results speak for themselves. It's almost astonishing that anybody would think that any animal could even fly with that amount of extra weight and protrusions.

Now while we can poke fun at paleoart all day, the thing is that altered dinosaurs or other prehistoric animals aren't just restricted to art alone. There have been cases where specimens themselves have been altered to look more impressive.

Such is the case with Irritator challengeri, a spinosaurid first discovered in Brazil, South America in 1996. While the original specimen is noted for having one of the most complete skulls of any spinosaurid anywhere, its name is referring to a much more...interesting background.

Irritator wasn't actually discovered by scientists. It was purchased from a fossil dealer which made its way to Germany’s Stuttgart State Museum of the Natural Sciences. In this case, material from the back of the skull had been removed, and placed on the tip of the snout, making the skull appear longer. Presumably this was to make the specimen more marketable. Paleontologist David Martill and his team had to painstakingly remove the altered bit of the snout and restore them to their original location. It was such a pain, they eventually named the species Irritator due to the difficulty of removing and reattaching the material without damaging the specimen.

But even the case of Irritator is nowhere near the levels of altering than the case of Archaeoraptor. AKA: the dinosaur that was completely made up.

Like with Irritator, the Archaeoraptor specimen was an altered fossil (also known as a chimera) sold on the fossil market. Though instead of a single specimen, it was several individuals put together to create a complete product that would sell for a much higher price. Smuggled out of China and sold in the US for $80,000 USD during 1999, it ended up in the hands of amateur dinosaur enthusiast Stephen Czerkas who wanted it to be the centerpiece of his museum in Blanding, Utah. Working with noted paleontologist Phil Currie and Chris Sloane of the National Geographic magazine, they determined that the specimen was the long sought-after missing link between dinosaurs and birds. A groundbreaking discovery like this would've revolutionized the field. So much so the magazine did a story on it and christened it Archaeoraptor even before a more formal study could be conducted.

The result: a complete disaster and embarrassment to both paleontology and National Geographic when it was revealed to be a hoax. Creationists had a field day, practically tearing the reveal apart and used it as evidence against paleontologists and their work. The zeal for the missing link resulted in an absolute blunder for science.

Ironically though, it's now believed that the two species used in the specimen belong to Yanornis (an early bird) and the famous Microraptor, both of which are stronger contenders for the title of "missing-link".

Needless to say, the field of paleontology is full of fabrications and falsehoods. And more often than not it's difficult to truly pick out what's real and what isn't. Which is a problem since it draws into question the validity of both research done by paleontologists, the work of paleoartists, and the very specimens themselves. Naturally it should come to no surprise that researchers need to be diligent in how dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals are portrayed and studied. Especially when sensation overcomes the truth many work so hard to find.

Comedic take on Eldritch Dream who does not understand human anatomy. He is Endless, alright, making his human corporation anatomically correct is, metaphysically speaking, about the same as a human making sure their ant replica has the correct number of properly jointed and articulated limbs.

So. One head. That was simple enough. One pair of eyes. Doable. But figuring out the proper length and thickness for eyelashes and eyebrows are a pain. One main respiratory orifice—wait, the nostrils. Two pairs of limbs. And they’ve got different structures of joints and cartilage for each limb. Fuck it he’ll just put (bare minimum)effort into the hands and head, it’s not like a human will see under his robes. Look at him getting a good grade in Human!

The point of this lengthy setup is, sexy times with Hob, Hob reaches under his outfit and feels. Nothing that a human mind can comprehend. After stuffing what little of his marbles were left back into his head, Hob has to awkwardly ask ‘Dream. Dream what was that.’

I'm obsessed and fully convinced that this is canon. Like. Dream does not pay attention to how many nipples a human man has. He barely pays attention to the concept of skin. When Hob touches him sometimes he's fully just made of fresh air or sweet smelling goop. Under his robe he's an absolute mess, and Hob... he's into, ok. The element of surprise he gets from touching his lover is great fun. And so what if Dream sometimes has tentacles or scales? So what if there's a strange fibrous orifice instead of an arsehole? After the initial freakout Hob just wants to know what he can and can't safely put his dick into.

the most important thing to note about the shape of human butts is that they're mostly just a large mound of muscle. We have big butts because that's how the muscles are shaped to make bipedal walking more efficient.

So if you want that booty, you mostly have to focus on keeping an upright bipedal figure. A thin tail that doesn't need much extra muscle is going to give you the best butt, while a heavy tail with more muscle mass is going to make the booty smaller by necessity. You could try to use a thick tail and a thick butt, but it will probably be a little too crowded for realistic motion. Fine if you just want to draw thicc characters for fun though, no shame lol.

as an example of tail muscles, here's an example of a very thick tail on a T-rex

As you can see, a large tail like this uses a lot of muscle. it helps balance the T-rex, and the motion of its tail actually helped it run better. in comparison, you can see the tail muscles of a baboon are much smaller, so there is more separation between the tail and legs while the T-rex's tail and legs almost seem to merge just from how much muscle is in that area.
