so there's a twitter (X? xitter??) thread about how cis people experience gender dysphoria and euphoria, about how it's not just a Trans Thing.

and i was reminded of one of the first times i tried explaining gender euphoria to one of my cis friends in more words than "it's when i feel good!"

i remember telling her about how i know when i feel euphoric because it shoots through me and makes me feel better instantly. about how it's a feeling of looking in the mirror and feeling like i'm finally actually looking at Me. about how it's more than thinking i look objectively nice but rather that i don't feel like i look like a girl. about how yes i get gender euphoria when i put on a sick ass outfit and put effort into my hair & makeup & accessories, but sometimes i also get it when i'm right out of the shower and my hair is falling in that "teenage boy heartthrob" way that makes me look androgynous.

but more than i remember explaining those feelings to her, i remember the look on her face as she realized she felt those feelings to. not over the same things, but she told me about how when she wears X outfit or does her hair in Y way she feels very Her. and how that feeling is so nice and how she didn't realize that was gender euphoria.

and i think that's the root of the issue, that people don't have words to describe those feelings. almost everyone experiences gender euphoria in one way or another. but we don't have mainstream words to describe it, because we've somehow managed to convince people that gender euphoria and dysphoria are uniquely trans experiences when they AREN'T.

i think it's so important to have language to describe these feelings because, for me at least, gender euphoria is more than "i look nice" or "i feel good," it's about "i feel like Me. i look like Me." it's more powerful to have precise language.
