"I wish more aro or ace books were good" REAL. I'm not a huge reader these days (a victim of the "read several books a day as a kid to easily distractable ADHD adult" pipeline :/, I'm working on it though) but I stick to mostly nonfiction when I do read, because most fiction is too amatonormative for my tastes and most aspec fiction is. Well. I already struggle with reading books, I need to be able to actually get into them to have a hope of finishing them.
The biggest mood there. Kinda all of it :') Reading books takes so much longer and more Effort than it used to when I inhaled books when I was 12... and SO many books that market themselves on the Aro or Ace Rep are just. They just aren't good books. Most aren't Morally Objectionable or anything, they're just not good books.
I feel like it's normal growing pains for a Queer Identity... god knows how many books I read of high schoolers going "It's okay... to be gay, actually!" when I was in middle/high school--but I kind of wish we could hurry up to the point where there are plenty of good ace and aro ones to choose from. (There are some good ones! The Murderbot Diaries, Ancillary Justice, Michelle Kan's novelettes, Polenth Blake's work, Darcie Little Badger's entire ouvre... I love those. And I haven't read The Bone People but it won a bunch of Real Literary Awards, and Firebreak I've been told is really up my alley... but I have. also read a bunch of aro and ace books that were just mediocre-to-bad.)

I get into very niche and obscure things, which is awesome and I love it, but then I have this problem where I can't share what I love about something to my friends without 50 different layers of context and I don't want to blab for a half hour to my friend about it and scare them off
#its the worst#for example#there's this musical motif that plays on a gramophone for like 10 seconds#in one of the 30 or so randomly chosen main menu scenes for starcraft 2#and that motif is one that's actually a full song from the original starcraft called the Brood War Aria#which was playing on a gramophone in the background of a cutscene on a spaceship for like 30 seconds#and there is a full version sung by this woman that you can find in the soundtrack#and it's really good#but the original song isn't the one I like#the one I like is a different version they did for the second game#and the two minute song is tucked into a 9 minute song on spotify#so I can't listen to my favorite version of it on command#but i can for the original#also the version for the second game is done by this one really good opera singer dude#and his voice is heavenly and he sings a duet with himself in the song#and i don't know both versions of the song are so awesome to listen to#it feels like wrapping my ears in soft silk#and it does so much in the context of the story as well#because the song is very peaceful and stress free#and when it was playing in the original game the guys in the spaceship#or battlecruiser as it's called in the game#are kinda chilling and watching this terrible battle go on between their fellow humans and these aliens#and they do absolutely nothing and leave them be even though they can save them with no risk to themselves#which is exactly what this guy named Mengsk did with the love interest to our protagonist#he abandoned her to die to that same race of aliens even though she was on his side#just for him to tie off loose ends#and that motif is attributed to him#and the one that plays in his main menu scene#and it's just representative of how unbothered he is by brutality and making others suffer#while he lives a lavish life and wields extraordinarily large amounts of power gained by those he betrayed and accuses of treason

I love that all of the dungeon meshi crew are complicated and have difficult to love components.#But Izutsumi is a particular kind of hard to love. I foresee a lot of people being turned off by her abrasiveness and lack of teamwork.#She is very self-centered and openly goes against what the party agrees on.#She's a picky eater in a story that is 50% about eating good and healthy food!#It is in part about her growth but admittedly even *then* she remains rather true to her self-centeredness.#Even though she isn't as nice or funny or compassionate as the others...Izutsumi is still someone worth loving.#Even the more difficult people are someone worth loving.#And those people in turn are people who have something and someone they love.#She may be a girlcat but she is the most human of them all.#I hope that if you are an anime only watcher and are feeling put off by her at the moment; you'll give her a chance.#By the way: *yes* I worked very hard to draw that skateboard pose.
