for the most part i think powerscaling sonic characters is pointless and theres no objective answer to most questions of who is stronger or who would beat who in a fight because the truth is that the answer to those questions will always be determined by what works best for the story being told . however. it does kinda bug me when shadow is portrayed as significantly more powerful than all the other characters and people (whether it be official writers or people in the sonic fandom) act like none of the other characters stand a chance against him in a fight or whatever because thats just demonstrably not true. i mean yeah hes the ultimate lifeform but that doesnt mean everyone else is weak and powerless compared to him

You know like the most tragic thing abt Sonic and Nine is that their fundamental morals are like. Incompatible.

I wanted to figure out what made Nine into well, Nine. Yk the thing that sat at the very core of him as a character that set him apart from others. (Both figuratively and literally, hear me out)

And at this very core, is the fact Nine Doesn't Care.

He doesn't care about anyone but himself and what he can get to benefit him in any given situation, weighing if it's worth remaining in it.

Now this might sound bad, but it's not like Nine is actively malicious (only when he goes insane, but that took like full five episodes of s3) or goes out of his way to screw people over. He doesn't like people, as such would not force himself to stay in their presence longer then nescessary.

When you are the only person in your life that you ever had to consider it's logical to not care about anyone else but oneself.

He's not going to risk recapture by the council for the resistance even though technically he could help. Same for why he's probably not with the resistance to begin with.

Nine wants to be left alone and keep himself alive, and joining a rag-tag, barely functioning military force resisting a tyrannical government would compromise both of those points. He doesn't know these people, doesn't like the city, and (a headcannon) he was born after New Yoke stood in place of Green Hill, so he doesn't even know what they're fighting for in the first place.

He doesn't care about any other fight going on, as far as he's aware, they do not concern him.

Until of course, the fight is brought to his doorstep. But even then, he's really only concerned about the Grim. The deal to fix the rest of the Shatterverse comes around when Sonic shows up in an attempt to try (and fail) resolving the conflict peacefully.

Which brings me to the hog himself.

The only other person Nine even acknowledges outside of necessary context.

In contrast to Nine, Sonic cares about other people, about the world. He cares and loves so much about the other that he forgets himself.

He took his friends for granted, which the show punishes him for thoroughly (actually maybe even too.much, he's literally just a silly guy come on narrative leave him alone) but he did care and love them, otherwise he wouldn't be so fucked up over losing them.

I dare say the denial and grief are also a big contributor to their conflict. But that's a seperate can of worms I am Not getting into here!!

Sonic loves so much and is willing to extend that to both his friends, traitors he still calls friends and outright enemies alike.

And Nine calls this out. Because it's impossible not to see it.

But I don't think he understand-understands. He like. Gets the semantics of it, that Sonic loves his friends, and he dared to hope he was one of them (and he is but yk, it's complicated!!). But I don't think Nine would ever even allow himself to get so lost for other people.

Because the second even Sonic — someone that Nine was willing to go out of his way for and wanted to have by his side — came clear with the fact their end goals did not align, Nine flipped. (I do think it's also the threat to his potential new paradise and start in life, a fucked up lonely child being handed a whole private world on a silver platter. He will not have anyone stand in his way. Not when he thinks he's so close to finally being happy.) Nine was fully ready to just, forget about Sonic and move on. (not that it would be easy or that he'd even succeeded, but he was for real gonna 💯)

The hedgehog now nothing but a sour reminder of just why Nine can't afford to care about anyone but himself.

Unlike Nine who only knows how to find solace in loneliness and hiding, Sonic loves exploring, meeting new people, seeing new places, and making new friends even if he knows they're temporary and their loss will inevitably hurt. And Is Prime Cannon questions are irrelevant, because that's what Sonic is at his very core. He cares

Something that's a complete opposite to Nine.

And this conflicting worldview, this very fundamental difference in their very life philosophy gets in their way of seeing eye to eye for the whole show.

That makes them have to convince the other of their own truth.

Because Nine sees it but doesn't comprehend it, and Sonic has like 17 concussions, hasn't slept or eaten in idk how long and is wracked with immense guilt and grief, so it took him until the last episode to fully absorb what Nine was about this whole time. But by then it was already way, way too late.

i stand by the fact that thief (2014) wasn't a very good game but it did have a cutscene in the very last chapter that i keep thinking about. like one of those tiny moments in a game that rewrites your brain. and i can't even describe exactly why, it's such a small moment, but i keep thinking about it.

the only isolated version of it i can find is here, which comes without the subtitles, but what she says is "Everyone said I was bad, that I corrupted the Primal. Well. I'd hate to disappoint."

and i just keep thinking about it. erin, her name's erin btw, has at this point spent a year in captivity, drugged into unconsciousness, tortured, experimented on, while various men in power try to extract this power out of her to use it for their own ends. this thing she does here, we know it happens ambiently to people over time from exposure to her. this is the first and only time we see her actively fuck someone up like this, destroy their mind and body in a way that's almost. casual. with just a touch, moving on past them. and i keep thinking about this moment. about her being told for a year that she's the source of corruption, that without her this power would be pure. useful. about her finally being conscious enough to do something with this thing that's been an excuse to hurt her for months and accepting it as truth that she did corrupt it but that means it's hers to use, now, and hers to destroy people with and hers to protect herself with. "i'd hate to disappoint."

the weird thing about botw sheikah is that I really do think they have some knowledge of magic, they're just subtler about it use. magic is sacred, magic is holy, magic should only be used in these specific ways so it remains unseen. magic should only be used for little things that couldn't harm. magic is steeped in tradition. magic is closed off, and only for the people who can use it appropriately

and while the yiga clan are the opposite of that-- they are much flashier and more open about their magic usage-- they still ultimately use the same framework, while openly loathing and rebelling against it. magic is something ripped from the mouths of gods (but in this world, magic is still sacred.) magic should be used openly (because they wanted to keep it hidden.) magic is used to distort (because they rejected its true power.) magic must be expanded on from its tradition (because they tried to stop us.) magic is less closed off, but only those who can handle its power should use it, and that means us, because we have that power.
