I can understand and lament the toxicity of Dutch and his relationship to the rest of the gang (specifically John, Arthur, and Hosea) at the exact same time that I can fantasize about Dutch being a really good Dad and husband raising 2 hellions and it is OKAY to not remind me that he is mentally ill:)

Why John Egbert could be a Bard of Heart (even though I know he is definitely not and never will be)

John has the potential to be a Heart player after years of like, being jaded and depressed hahaha. He doesn’t canonically actively repress his emotions like Gamzee (who failed that one time) or Dirk (who fails constantly), but instead he just… genuinely forgets about them lmao. When something comes up and he has to react maturely he does a decent job because emotions aren’t in the picture, normally because he dissociates and isn’t used to such situations, and he doesn’t even need to worry about actively *keeping them* out of the picture. It’s just how he is.

If John grew up in a household with a Dad like mine, who is still a serious sort of businessy man who shares those textbook heterosexual “be a man, do the mission, save the gal” movies with his son (this is a huge reason why John is so adamant about not being gay, he wants to be that textbook macho hetero hero), John would acknowledge his emotions a little more. This is because if Dadbert were like MY dad, he would always always always make sure to remind John to take his emotions into account and express them when the time is appropriate. I think Dadbert is a good communicator, he’s always reminding John how proud he is, but something about their relationship simply hasn’t taught John to acknowledge his emotions very much in canon. If he were to *actively* suppress them, wanting to be like the guys he sees in the movies, John would disregard his emotions on purpose instead of by accident, the way he does in canon.

Now he doesn’t do the multiple selves thing that Karkat and Dirk do, BUT in his journey as a Heart player that could easily be thrown in. John’s contempt for his softer, more pliable self who can potentially ruin everything if he lets himself *feel* at the wrong time... instead he tries to have the perfect maturity and self esteem of those movie heroes. I mean canonically he may act friendly and have big goofy overreactions, but that’s because he actively pushes that front, because he enjoys it. John doesn’t feel nearly as much as someone like Dirk or Karkat or Jade does. He literally forgets to. He’s numb. That’s why he doesn’t cry. That’s why he handled his Dad’s death better than Rose did with her Mom. That’s why he doesn’t hold grudges. That’s why he handles big-boy topics better than literally everyone in Homestuck, except maybe Karkat. Karkat is pretty damn good at that too because he has the power of empathy.
