Okay so many of us know about Whumpees that have some sort of magical blood or venom or other substance that can be used as a drug, right? For other Whumpees, or Whumpee themselves or Whumper! We ourselves also have an OC like that.

But what happens if Whumper starts to lose control over it?

Whumper getting addicted to Whumpee’s drug before they even know what happened

Its a high or peaceful bliss similar to when they hurt Whumpee but even better and oh so much easier/quicker

How does Whumper take the drug from Whumpee?

Do they get high on Whumpees blood/venom/tears/whatever right in front of the mortified Whumpee??

Withdrawals and Whumper getting used to the effects quicker

Thus needing more and more substance from Whumpee, and more frequently

Whumper pushing their poor Whumpee further and further in order to get their drug from them (blood, venom, tears, you name it)

Does Whumpee eventually run out somehow, termporarily dries out or simply becomes so exhausted that their (whatever) loses its drug like capabilities

How would Whumper react to this??

Actually you know what. Here's a list of stuff that like. Doesn't annoy me exactly, but I guess I find slightly (harmlessly) frustrating about retro-style indie FPSes, and also stuff that they should do I guess:

The relative lack of games taking inspiration from late-'90s or even early-2000s games, like seriously why is there only one indie game I can think of that's trying to Do A Half-Life™ (namely Abiotic Factor) and why is said game not even the right genre. Or like a Red Faction spiritual successor that actually uses the terrain destruction mechanics for more than a few setpieces and secrets. Halo is right there why aren't there and indie Halo-likes oh my goddddddd also Doom 3. I would play the hell out of a Doom 3 spiritual-successor, especially if it leant harder into the horror angle.

No-one does the cute little maps between levels? Like what Doom did? Apart from Prodeus, though that's more like a Mario 3/World-style level-select. And Nightmare Reaper, but that one's diegetic and only coverse the first ~third maybe. Also the ROTT remaster and Extraneum. But like it's fun! You get to visualise your journey! Also you can do the thing that Doom didn't do and make each level's representation on the minimap actually match up with its layout and/or concept.

Amid Evil is somehow the only game I can think of with a Quake-style diegetic episode-select. We need more of those, they're fun. I guess Nightmare Reaper also does this, but those are more like standard hub levels with enemies and weapon-drops, plus you can't revisit level-sets you've already completed.

Give your game shitty prerendered cutscenes (affectionate)! Or even live-action. Indie FPS devs seem to love Blood, they should also include a bald, earless 3D model of their protagonist awkwardly falling down a hole. Shout out to Slayers X for having intentionally-bad prerendered cutscenes by the way, like from what I've seen it's one of the more authentic-feeling examples, which makes sense considering the game's metanarrative.

Get weird with inspirations! Make a spiritual successor to Killing Time or Realms of the Haunting or some other weird FPS that was covered on Game Dungeon! Stop taking inspiration from Quake and Blood, there are already way too many games that do that!

How do you keep up your motivation and discipline to work on a personal project for such a long time?

Hi there!

Great question. My answer may seem stupidly simple, but it just comes down to really, really wanting to make the project. If I didn't really want to make the film I would have just quit years ago. I also decided very early on in my career that I wanted to make animation and drawing a daily/nightly part of my lifestyle which I stuck to, so at this point the practice is habitual. I also pushed video games largely out of my life to make time for animation and I don't miss them, really. That said, there are times when I'd rather draw/work on anything else but my movie. But there are things you can do to keep it fresh as you go.

Since my personal film is a large project, there have been a wide variety of tasks and shots that I can jump around to at different points in the production timeline. Scripting, designing, storyboarding, animation, layout/background painting, effects animation, compositting, researching motion, audio design, etc. If I get sick of a particular part of the project, I just shift gears and work on a different part of it so that I'm always moving while keeping things from getting stale. Sometimes I stay focused on how on track I am with my milestones, and sometimes I like to work diligently in a vacuum.

The hardest part is near the end of production (currently) when you inevitably only have a couple of tasks left to do like compositing and editing. In that case, I commit to a schedule of few hours every night where I work on those remaining tasks between set hours. It really helps to set milestones and completion goals as you go. This can help you stay focused and also see the volume of work shrink as you progress. Although I try not to look at how much work I have left because that can drive you to madness. Definitely had a couple sleepless nights.

EDIT: I should mention that I also stay up till around 1am - 2am every night working on my film. I used to be up till 4am but living on only 4-5 hours of sleep every night took its toll.

Turn any Nook Miles Island into a Tarantula Island!

I was testing it out and thought I’d post about it with pictures!

1. Make sure it’s night (and ideally raining)

It must be night for this to work since tarantulas only spawn at night. Their spawn rate goes up if it’s raining but it’s not necessary. According to Critterpedia, tarantulas are available 7pm-4am, November-April. I’m playing in the Northern Hemisphere so this might be different if you are in the Southern Hemisphere!

2. Go to a Nook Island and remove EVERYTHING

Remove weeds, pick/dig flowers, break rocks, cut down trees and remove their stumps. This lowers the spawn rate for other bugs. Doing this in March, I had only 2 other bugs spawn: wharf roaches and tiger beetles. It’s important to constantly scare away other bugs to improve tarantula spawn rates.

Also your island layout may affect spawn rates and overall make your life easier or harder. My island was kind of annoying because I needed to use the Vault Pole and Ladder to repeatedly cross the river and go up on the cliff.

3. Catch tarantulas

Once everything is clear tarantulas should start spawning. Sometimes they spawn quickly, sometimes it’s dry for a bit. Constantly circle the island to load/unload other parts of the island so new tarantulas can spawn (not sure how the game actually does this under the hood lol)

It’s actually very easy to catch tarantulas, and you don’t need to make any fancy traps:

Approach the tarantula slowly

Hold out your net by holding A

Walk towards the tarantula until it goes up on its legs, then stop walking

Once it goes back down approach it and again stop when it stands on its legs

Repeat until you are close enough to catch it

Despite this though, I still fainted I would say ~7 times. In total I caught 28 tarantulas (I found another bug on the island that I didn’t have in the museum yet), and I think there’s no way to leave without one empty inventory slot.

I sold them at Nook’s Cranny the next day for 8,000 bells each for a total of 224,000 bells, quite the profit! It took me around 1.5 hours, though I wasn’t too focused on it and was just chilling listening to music.

HOWEVER: Apparently Flick buys tarantulas from you for 50% more, making the selling price 12,000 bells each, with a max profit (with 40 inventory slots) of 480,000 bells! That’s a lot! I haven’t tested this yet but my bf sent me this picture from somewhere on tumblr:

BONUS TIPS/ISSUES: From reading the reddit thread, some people have posted other tricks and issues, though I’ve not tested any of them:

Covering the stone parts with dropped wood etc. prevents wharf roaches from spawning. (Another user says they just spawn underneath so I don’t think this works)

This doesn’t work in Southern Hemisphere (could be a time of year thing)

If you have any comments/tips/etc. please let me know!

Also I’m still looking for a way to get bells that is easy and consistent like beetle farming in New Leaf. If anyone finds a way (without glitches, duping, etc.) let me know!

Project title: CERBERUS

Challenge:

It is hard to believe that, after all the effort we as a society have put into simplifying our lives and making our everyday routines as comfortable as possible, people are still afraid of walking alone at night. With the access to phones and cellular data becoming more and more essential, there should be a way for people to feel comfortable and safe in their communities. 

The approach:

To help remediate to the situation, I designed the branding for an app that focuses on creating a network of verified volunteers to act as walking buddies, helping insecure individuals feel safer when walking alone at night. According to my research, there are three main groups of individuals that report fear of walking alone at night: heterosexual women, sexual minority men and sexual minority women. In addition, individuals with lower income had almost three times as much chance to report being afraid of walking alone at night. Therefore, the design for this app should reflect accessibility and appeal to a wide range of audiences.

What I did:

Using androgynous colours, I crafted intriguing gradients and developped a very soft and inviting aesthetic in tandem with an edgy Font. The name Cerberus is, after all, the name of the literal guardian of hell, but in this case, the name serves as a reference to a pack of dogs, living and helping each other. This imagery is portrayed by the logo which features three dogs in its complex form and a single dog in its simplified version.

Project title: 4AM

Challenge:

The goal of this project was to create a captivating aesthetic and branding for a musician that captured his intensive growth as an artist and as a person. At the time, I had been working with 4AM for a few months on album covers for the artist’s social media pages, prominently using space as the main theme for the art direction of the artworks. Being ready to take on a bigger project, 4AM hired me to design a new branding for his work that would launch at the same time as his first virtual album release that would be called: Kronenbourg and Bandanas. 

The Approach:

As the virtual album release was mainly advertised on Instagram and since Instagram was the main platform for the artists’ promotion, the branding design and the artwork for the virtual album should take advantage of the easily shareable attributes of social media. 

What I Did

Using the 3 square layout of Instagram’s profiles as a means to display the album’s front cover, back cover and a picture of the artist that would’ve been on the inside cover of the album if it would’ve been a physical music album.

Project title: Chez Florence

Chez Florence aimed to be a hip and youthful Bed & Breakfast that would appeal to nature lovers and seekers of beautiful experiences. 

The Approach

According to my research, most of B&B’s optimal target audiences (ota) are travelers and the occasional local guests. As British Columbia serves as a hotspot for international and canadian travelers wishing to explore Canada’s wonderful outdoors, Chez Florence's main target audience will consist of guests who’s first experience with the brand will be virtually, through the branding. 

What I did

Consequently, the branding chosen for Chez Florence expresses a feel of a vintage cabin in the woods and of floral wallpapers that suggest the omnipresence of plant life, the perfect fantasy for any traveller wishing to experience a North-West B&B experience. The vintage script chosen as the brand’s logotype is reminiscent of a person’s signature, evoking a sense of a heartwarming and comfortable home away from home as well as a sense of welcoming familiarity.

It was just Star Trek and I did start watching. Interested because I wanted originally to watch ST Picard because Harry Treadaway but having never seen any ST before it didnt make sense (obvs) so I went back and started watching TNG. I didn’t want to start with the original series because honestly my attention span is garbage and I just was always curious about Data and so I started with him.

What movie(s) always comforts you?

Twister, Forrest Gump, The Lion King (1994). I’m currently wearing Lion King pjs lol. Pirate Radio is a relaxing feel good movie, too. 

Are you an arts-and-crafts person? If so, what types of art/craft do you enjoy?

I try SO HARD to be lol. So far during quarantine I’ve tried crochet, I’ve tried making string bracelets as if it was 2005 and I was in 8th grade again but I forgot how to make them and my brain refuses to re-learn its too full of music, nursing school, and data now. I tried coloring and lost patience. I have been working on a Quarantine Photo-Journal. Every day I post a tiny update and a few pictures (mostly memes since i cant leave the house and several Data photos lolololol) but my printer isn’t working right all of a sudden so I can’t print out any new pictures which I guess that one project I was really enjoying is out the window.

How are you finding ways to stay connected with your friends and family? From video calling to playing online games, what would you say has worked the best for you?

Nothing. I’m sitting here wallowing in deep loneliness and it’s killing me. It’s just my grandma and my cat and that’s why I can’t go out or work (I am a Patient Care Associate and I know the hospitals could use help but my grandma is 83 years old and it’s too high of a risk for her for me to be working in a hospital and coming home from there).

Share your general quarantine experience so far. How are you handling it?

Bad. I often forget to take my meds, we’ve been on “spring break” from nursing school this week so I have 0 sense of time and no routine and I’ve sometimes been going to bed at 4am, sometimes 4pm, sleeping until like 9-11 regardless and I spend 95% of the day in bed. I can’t be bothered to change, sometimes can’t be bothered to really eat, and I care 0% about showering and Doing Anything. lol 

I mean it’s been great guys. Ba-da-ba-ba-ba I’m lovin’ it!

I did somehow loose 2lbs without trying tho. That’s a total of 7.8lbs lost since March. Only 125 more to go BUT THE GYM IS CLOSED AND IT HAS BEEN COLD AND RAINING.

I’ll shut up.

I think you are more than talented. Your story of Geralt and the blind witch is really interesting. You can get attached to Axilia in just 5 chapters. The only defect that I think is valid is that the chapters are very small and when they end they give a feeling that they are incomplete and not a hook for the other part,just ends there. I think they should be a little bigger,just that. XOXO ❤

Slightly confused where this is coming for, huh.

I prefer shorter chapters, over longer chapters, because personally, it's easier to read in lesser quantities than one big-ass chunk of 7k+ words that in misshaped square /no shade to other authors, Tumblr just has a weird layout/. Let's be honest, with all this updating chapters thing online. Readers quickly lose interest, because they need to wait for new chapters and they can't get to read it from start to finish in one reading basically. Which explains why first chapters always have bigger note count than the future ones. Because of the loss of interest. Don't lie. I know, readers see that they're tagged in chapter, I dunno thirteen, but the story updates has been dragging out for months. No one has time to search for previous chapter to look what was going on before. I better update frequently, in lesser amounts than they lose will to read while I write some big chunky chapter, where details, important events are dense and one can't keep up with everything.

I understand that bigger chapters take longer time, I know. I have written fanfic books- trilogies, with thousands of reads and I can assure you, they loose interest if they need to way too long. This is probably all my fault. But we all know the feeling when you're reading a really good online story just to realize it's not finished. Also, bigger and longer chapters IS COMMITMENT. You can't write 8k chapter followed by 1.2k word chapter. I RESPECT THOSE WHO CAN AND I REALLY HOPE YOU'RE STORIES GET PUBLISHED!!!💋💋

The hook part? Don't see problem. Can't go over-describing every small detail, you need to leave something for the readers to piece together themselves. Can't really end a chapter with a sentence that basically continues into the next chapters start /probs didn't make sense/. Also, it helps with time jumps. You're smart, read, follow along, then everything will fall in its rightful place.

Doom Days Song Rankings

Ok, so with the new Bastille album Doom Days well out at this point I thought I might as well make a personally opinionated ranking on the songs on the album.

Now, Let's get into this countdown

#11. Divide- This isn't necessarily my least favorite song I just think this song could have been a lot more and the pacing was a little too slow for my liking. I also believe it was quite repetitive at times.

#10. Million Pieces- This is as low as it is for a similar reason that it is quite repetitive at times and the premise of the song has been played over a million times.

#9. Nocturnal Creatures- I truly like some of the lyrics in this song but it becomes way too repetitive with the "We're Nocturnal Creatures" that it makes the song sound much worse and that's why it's so far down.

#8. 4AM- This is where the album really starts to get good I like how this makes you feel for the person singing it but also at the same time feels way too lazily sung, its funny when the song Lethargic has more energy.

#7. Bad Decisions- I don't really have much wrong with this song it's pretty okay in my mind it just doesn't speak out to me as some of the others did.

#6. Joy- Joy was a very upbeat song with not as joyful lyrics, I really enjoy these types of songs and Bastille hasn't indulged in many songs like this and I really enjoyed their take on it.

#5. The Waves- This song was pretty upbeat and fast paced but just didn't do anything quite special I think they have overdone the background echo audio and in this it is used a good amount.

#4. Doom Days- This could have easily been number one on this list I really enjoyed this track but the fact that it is only just over 2 minutes makes it feel barely like a real song and more like an interlude. If most of the songs were sped up to be like Doom Days they probably would all be around the same length.

#3. Quarter Past Midnight- This is the only song on the album that really reminds me of their older stuff, I enjoyed it quite well and it has a nice layout and pace.

#2. Another Place- I quite enjoyed this one because I liked the lyrics and it had a quicker pace than most songs. This had been one of the first songs I heard from the album and this is what I had wished the whole album would have been.

#1. Those Nights- This was by far my favorite song of the album, the video had pleasant imagery with all the camera angles it went through and the song sounded really well made and as I don't relate with it many will and the story of the song I really enjoyed.
