Fortitude

He finds himself on the outside of a still-standing structure with high walls of white stone covered in creeping vines. From the entrance of Elysium, the arena looked bigger than this. Still, he can hear the people inside, the rumble of hundreds of voices together, then a cheer. Someone is fighting. Someone is winning.

Patroclus walks through the main entrance.

He’d expected stairs or something to get him up to the seats, but instead he is blocked by a metal gate in front of him, and the grand door behind him has likewise closed. He is trapped. He remembers what Zagreus told him, that entering the arena is a challenge. It doesn’t seem he will have a choice.

He peers through the bars. Inside, the arena is mostly empty, tracks running through the dirt to indicate chariots had been here. There are banners fluttering down the high walls, and above, the audience, just an indistinguishable mess of blue and green. Patroclus cranes his neck back and forth and finds a warrior standing to the side, his arms in the air, winding up his audience who cheer for him. His back is to Patroclus, but there is thick, black hair spilling out of his helmet. There’s a discarded spear on the ground near his feet, presumably belonging to whoever was just defeated.

The gate in front of Patroclus opens, and there’s nothing to do but step out. The warrior turns to face him.

“Diomedes,” Patroclus sighs. “I don’t suppose you remember me.”

“Patroclus,” Diomedes replies with clear eyes and a sharp smile. “Son of Menoetius, slayer of Sarpedon, son of Zeus. Where the hell have you been all these years?”

mercy seems like a long shot here, so my prayer for inauguration day 2025: may they be incompetent. may they just be really bad at implementation. may their egos choke their effectiveness. may they drown themselves week by week with infighting and selfish posturing. may they be easily distracted. may the very governors and senators and agencies and religious leaders that the new administration expects to be friendly force endless stalemates to preserve their own power. may every delay turn into a three ring blame circus so chaotic that no one remembers what they were doing. may the good and necessary parts of government be too boring to draw attention and keep running quietly in the background. may the next four years be full of sound and fury and signify nothing.

slow down for your disabled friends. thats like a bare minimum kindness that we shouldnt have to ask for. i love that youre so quirky and walking fast is a cool personality trait to you and all that but i bet you can count your physically disabled friends on less than one hand

i’m going to hold your hands when i say this and i am only going to be kind about it once: ai does not belong in fandom spaces, ever. not in writing, not in art, not in video, not at all. it does not matter how bad you want to see your favourite characters kiss, or how much you need a bit of help finishing a chapter, or whatever.

make friends with artists. commission somebody. learn to draw yourself. ask for a beta read. try a writing partnership. fandom spaces are communities, so engage with them! it is about the journey and the fact that we all love something enough to create and build together about that thing.

spending 30 seconds to kill a tree and get an AI to push out some soulless empty piece of “content” is antithetical to the entire point of being engaged with fandom, and if you’ve taken to doing this you should really reconsider if you belong in these spaces with the rest of us.
