What response would you recommend to people attacking shipping? For that matter, what response would you recommend to Hamas doing that thing they did last October, which everyone has decided didn't happen and wouldn't matter if it did? I don't think the current response is good, but the alternative being offered is literally "roll over and die."
We are so far past a reasonable response to what Hamas did in October that “well what would you have done?” feels like a question that’s in extraordinarily bad faith, whether or not you mean it that way. A policy genuinely aimed at preventing massacres like the one in October starts with not illegally occupying territory, stalling a peace process indefinitely, and persistently dehumanizing and abusing a large civilian population—by the time we’re asking “how do you respond to a group like Hamas attacking civilians” we are already in the realm of abject policy failures, because a group like Hamas only exists because of Israeli policies. An honest response would be something like “fundamentally reassess our approach to Palestine.”
But if Israel has the kind of politics, and Netanyahu was the kind of leader, capable of doing that, it’s hard to imagine things getting this bad in the first place. This is one reason it’s important to put pressure on governments like the UK and US to criticize Israel’s actions, because the push for restraint is not going to come from within Israeli politics.
#there’s this consistent dynamic in dehumanizing politics#where a population gets abused and oppressed and exploited#for years on end#and when someone in that population#finally lashes out in anger#even does something shocking#their oppressors go ‘see? we told you they were animals’#and uses that as an excuse to maintain the oppression#they were going to continue anyway#the correct response to hamas’s massacre was to do nothing#that would have required extraordinary courage and restraint#but it would have shown Hamas they were wrong about Israel#ditto for that matter 9/11#the correct response to a provocation#is not to let yourself be provoked!

Meet my rito OC, Nerisa!
She's based on a Snowy/Wandering Albatross and uses her large wingspan to glide nonstop over the ocean to keep a lookout for lost souls at sea.
Because she spends a lot of time in the air, like her animal counterpart, she has a difficult time landing.
She also has a crush on Penn
#my art!#rito oc#a friend pointed out I have a penchant for drawing big/tall characters and yes. yes i do C:<#Throwing more trivia your way! *THWACK*#they are one of the largest birds with a wingspan thats 11-12ft in length! they can go months and years without ever touching land!#they use their big wings like sails for long flights with a technique called dynamic soaring to help reserve energy on those long flights#one albatross was tracked and recorded flying for 46 days and covering over 1000 miles!#they feed on fish and squid and can even hunt at night 👀#they also have whats called a salt gland to help them get rid of the saline from ingesting sea water#theres 20000 birds in the world and their status is considered vulnerable#they have no natural predators but their populations are dwindling due to things like climate change and ocean pollution 😭

re: elf servants
I think generally there are servants in royal/noble households simply for practical reasons and they generally fall into 2 categories: specialised servants (think, stewards and messengers and scribes, masters of horses or kennels, that kind of thing) and servants who help with the upkeep of the household (cleaning, repairs, cooking and also the apprentices and assistants of specialised servants)
specialised servants are probably quite prestigious roles and fields of industry in their own right, and they are considered full members of a household, and probably are closely linked to the person they serve - it's as much a political and social statement to be Finwe's chief scribe as it is an economic one
but the second category are more associated with the house than the family living in it - for example, Finwe's palace in Tirion would function both as a home and a diplomatic and administrative centre, it would be impossible for him to rule and keep up with chores himself. But Fingolfin's personal home would probably not have any full-time servants - when there more people than usual to feed or house then professionals might be hired, but for the most part I imagine the day to day is done by the family (made possible by the fact elves sleep and eat less than humans)
IRL domestic service (at least in the 18th century) often functioned as a kind of prep stage for adult life (for women in particular, but gender is probably not as big a factor for elves) and I could definitely see this in Valinor - domestic servants being 80% elves between 50-100 who haven't chosen an apprenticeship or similar in another field who are earning extra money to set up their own households, getting experience outside of the family, meeting others in their own ae cohort, learning independence etc. It's a job that comes with the offer of room and board + the wages a king/prince/lord can provide. Not glamorous, but not terrible.
The other 20% is made up of professional servants - experienced elves who are genuinely like the work and are contracted workers as much as a builder or gardener might be. Some of them might be independent and others part of businesses set up by other elves who are really into cooking/cleaning etc.
In Beleriand the situation (for the exiles at least) is probably very different, though I think there would be attempts to adapt the system - but there aren't as many households that need servants and there aren't as many young elves.
#i confess i very much enjoy making ocs who are bg characters and servants are perfect for this#made my own post because i could not fit this in the tags LMAO#also the amount of labour needed to run a pre industrial household is HUGE#but elves generally get around this by having a population that is 90% adult and having magic#and having the time for anyone to become vastly skilled in their field in a lifetime#so things like food and clothing production is almost always communal and in the hands of elves who are REALLY into that specific area#the magic being relevant here because elf magic preserves - elven clothes won't wear out elf food doesn't go off etc#(or at least not as easily as human food/clothes)#i prefer to write elf societies that only visually mirror human ones - to an outsider it looks like a hierarchy of lord and servants#but the dynamic is very different#but that is just my preference#silm meta#not really a meta i just need to be able to find this post on my blog lol#long post#this is one of my fave topics hence the rambling

Mood board for my latest project. Little bit of it below the cut.
You eat the lunch you packed and pull off your sweater, the noon sun warming you up enough to not need it, at least for the moment. You putt along to a new spot and try fishing again, this time catching three good sized fish. Surprising, considering the time of day, but sometimes you get lucky. You're thinking about heading back home when you spot a flash of white under the water.
You grab your camera, determined to be ready. And then a grey shape launches out of the water and into your boat, nearly capsizing it. The white orca sluices through the water next to your boat a moment later, regarding you disdainfully with one bloodshot eye. He flicks his tail as he dives again, soaking you and your passenger.
Your seal friend makes himself comfortable at the prow of the boat, entirely too pleased with himself.
"You're on thin ice, mister!" You tell him, turning back the way you'd come. Thanks to him you missed your photo and nearly went for a swim in deep water. You're pretty sure he couldn't help you out of that situation even if he wanted to, especially with a hunter swimming just below. You certainly don't want four inch teeth biting you in half.
Of course, you don't want to see your friend get eaten in front of you either. You know its the way of the ocean, but he's your little buddy.
The white orca cuts across your path again. You stop your engine, heart hammering, and grab your camera. He disappears into the depths for a moment, and then jumps a little ways away. If you didn’t know better, you’d say he was showing off. You get several quick snaps that you know will be gorgeous— Water droplets catching the sun, his ghostly white body stark against the backdrop of the dark ocean. You grin at the seal, and yelp when something thumps the bottom of your boat, rocking it harshly.
Then the white orca (he needs a name, so you land on Ghost) surfaces next to you, terrifyingly close, and spits water at the seal.
“Holy shit,” you breathe, adjusting your lens for the close contact, camera shutter clicking away as you shoot pictures. Ghost eyes you, and then spits water a second time. The seal looks deeply offended, but not concerned, even with his hunter bobbing in the water a few feet away. “Aren’t you a pretty boy.”
He is pretty. A juvenile, maybe, now that you see him up close— He’s a bit small for an orca, but he’s all alone out here, no pod to speak of, and a juvenile wouldn’t survive on it’s own. As if he can hear your compliment, he creaks at you.
The seal barks back. He seems offended by Ghost’s presence. Understandable, since Ghost was trying to eat him earlier. You get a few funny snaps of the two of them regarding each other over the rim of the boat, having a conversation that you have no way of understanding. You feel a bit insane. A bit like you’re going to wake up laying in the bottom of your boat any minute, and this will all be a funny dream.
#cave writing#I don't have a title yet so I can't make an actual title card#this hardly qualifies as a mood board but I'm a sick fuck and the orca throwing the seal gets me laughing every time#true GhostSoap dynamic#I'm listening to so much Stan Rogers rn#I was listening to the Corries but I didn't like their version of Barrett's Privateers so I got sidetracked#Free in the Harbour hits#I've also been doing a lot of research on orcas and let me tell you. People have not been good to them#But in Western North Atlantic populations there's been more and more sightings since the 90s in the Maritimes#And lots of calves!! There's less pollution from farming run off in the northern areas so the population isn't experiencing the same-#fertility problems that some other groups of orcas do#and they seem to be more diverse in their breeding practices too which is good#there's a pod in the Southern hemisphere that's like Hapsburg levels of inbreeding#Although there are still some breeding problems all over just from being apex predators#lots of pollutants collect high up in the chain#That's why the resident pods on the West Coast of north america seem to do a bit better - They're primarily fish eaters#versus transient whales that tend to eat more mammals and other whales#People need to get their shit together about the ocean#Sorry what was I saying#I'm working on a novel version of this because there's a bigger story to tell but I still want to finish this fic version and post it#Sitting around 9k now but I'll probably finish it before posting just to avoid another WIP people want me to update chapters on lmao#anyway I should go do some chores or something

Tbf Dacre's book is not the only Dracmina book around. There are also at least three retellings that are straight out bodice rippers (Dracula in Love, Dracula, My Love and the Italian book Our Secret Story) and a couple of sequels that have it (Freda Warrington's and Mina: the Dracula Story Continues.) On the other hand, there are at least 200 Dracula-based books in existence and most of them are even more obscure than Dracula musicals, so. There are also at least four Dracula/Jonathan books and two (very good) Dracula/Lucy ones.
Oh, absolutely, which was why I tried to be. Light on the books mentioned and to try to keep to books that I thought had gotten a bit of press/"legitimacy" over the years, aka being big enough names to be indicative of anything beyond "people really like to reinterpret Dracula." (It's also the problem with categorizing film adaptations because it VERY QUICKLY becomes "Is this Bram Stoker's Dracula or Is This Pop Culture Dracula, And Where Do We Draw the Line?") I also considered putting Anno Dracula and Dowery of Blood for relatively prominent novel adaptations/spin-offs that feature an unromantic/ abusive Dracula (the latter of which, IIRC, Mina doesn't even appear in.) I had forgotten Dracula, My Love, though! (...also, Anon...the Jonathan/Dracula and Dracula/Lucy novels? The villainfuckers of the world want to know!)
I mentioned Dacre's because. I hate this novel with every fibre of my being (...honestly if it'd just been Dracmina, it would have been salvageable, as opposed to the homophobic, sexist mess we were left with...) BUT it has the name "Stoker" attached to it so (I repeat: Dacre when I see you...) With The Dracula Tape, I mentioned it because I think it has a lot of stereotypes people think of when they think of a deconstructive approach of Dracula even though it is. A parody. And is part of this movement in the 1970s that is seriously interrogating Dracula as a text and trying to grapple with it, which includes grappling with Mina as a character and her dynamic with Dracula.
But the point is, thank you, yes!
#i also shied away from including too many novels because the initial point was on film/stage adaptations#but i think the broader point is that even though there have been some prominent Dracmina media in the last few decades#it has never been AS prominent as people think#rather that it's been in a few major adaptations and those were the ones that most of the population would have watched#and instead of watching other adaptations they just. apply their criticisms of that ONE film to EVERY DRAC ADAPTATION#and for that matter EVERY Dracmina dynamic in EVERY film that actually has it as a consensual thing

Album theme: Overpopulation. Childfree. Antinatalism. Anthropogenic pollution of the Earth with excess human offspring. Addition to the grimoire "Gay Lust". Collections of satanic drawings, photographs and other graphics of gay Satanism (No. 2201-2300) for the immersion in the spirituality of Satan. Collection SatanArt №.23
The theme of the album-collection SatanArt №23 is Overpopulation (also called Overpopulation) of the planet Earth with human organisms and related concepts, terms and spheres. Slut Sodomia believes that the main areas related to the theme of the collection are: Childlessness. Antinatalism. Anthropogenic pollution of the Earth. Therefore, I have included all these topics in the current collection as related to each other.
I ask the reader to consider the direct overpopulation of the planet with the bodies of critters and their internal evil (emptiness) - primary anthropogenic pollution, and I ask to consider the activity of these critters as secondary anthropogenic pollution. Secondary anthropogenic pollution is:
Garbage.
Poisoning of nature.
Depriving man of connection with nature - urbanization. Nature is a natural and pleasant habitat for people. Anthropogenic garbage dumps are an unnatural habitat.
Building up the Earth with hovels and human anthills (i.e. multi-apartment and multi-story buildings) worsens the quality of life.
The increase in the human population gives rise to an increase in the level of evil throughout the world.
Today, the main problem facing the entire world community as a whole is the overpopulation of the Earth. Overpopulation is an excess of population in relation to the means of subsistence or to the demand for labor. That is, if not all of the planet's population is in demand for work, and not all of the population is provided with resources for subsistence, then they say that the planet is overpopulated with people.
It took about 1,800 years for humanity to reach one billion, but in just 100 years, the population explosion of the 20th century increased the world's population more than sixfold.
Overpopulation (or overcrowding) is the idea that a population may become too large to be supported by the environment or resources in the long term. The topic is usually discussed in the context of world population, although it can also apply to individual countries, regions, and cities. Modern proponents of the concept have suggested that overpopulation, population growth, and overconsumption are interdependent, and together are the main drivers of human-caused environmental problems such as climate change [1].
I dedicate the collection-album SatanArt №23 to one of the main problems of good spiritualization of people inhabiting planet Earth. The main problem is the excessive number of superimposed evil critters who do not have good spiritualization at birth and cannot receive it during adulthood. At the same time, I do not even mean satanic spiritualization for the masses of people, but I would simply like the quality of people to be higher than the animal level or the level of stupid consumption of goods with resources. It is the overpopulation of planet Earth that is the reason why satanic spiritualization is a rarity in our world. A huge number of empty people have been superimposed, who are simply bio-bodies without real spiritualization by awareness. About 90% of the planet's population lives the life of animals and pollutes the planet with their presence and their secondary anthropogenic pollution. The solution to this problem can be the phrases: stop being fruitful and multiplying! Critters, stop breeding your own kind of freaks! Satanists, childfree people, feminists and antinatalists are implementing these simple slogans. Partially, gays and many people of the LGBTQ+ community who are not inclined to give birth to new human offspring are implementing these programs. The evil of our world, fascists, religions and the SOCG want the critters to spawn and multiply in numbers. Evil wants the critters of the human species to be stupid, fooled and without significant spirituality. Evil is afraid that there is a significant number of spiritual Satanists in the world. When there are more than 10% of Satanists from the population of planet Earth, the power of evil will come to an end. Now this figure is much lower and is less than 1% among the best peoples of the world and about 0.001% among wild monkeys of the human species. I examined the topic of spiritualization of the population of planet Earth in more detail in the SatanArt album #19 “Satanic spiritualization in the quantum world of the External Information Field” and in the main grimoire of gay Satanism “Gay lust”.

anatomy? you in art school?? cause if so youll rock it but i thought you were a sciences girlie
Oh thank you for the faith in me Nonnie- but nope! Zero way I'd get into art school, lol. My wonderful brother is the artist! :D Although he is sweet as can be about my draws <3333
I'm talking Anatomy and Physiology! I've been tentatively accepted into the practical nursing program at my college, and will hopefully start in fall as long as I get a C+ or better in my current course and all my documents are in order, which I just have a couple to sort out and have lots of time to do so. I'm just gonna make sure they're ready before midsummer. The place I'm at is pretty small, so they didn't have a psych program for me to continue [they only have intro psychology courses, which I already took. In fact, I had already completed abnormal psych before moving and all] and I had to change gears. IDK if I mentioned that before, but even if I did, it's probably buried. But my auntie is a nurse [although I think she's a nurse practitioner, which is more intense than my chosen path, but I prefer working with my hands and doing the "ground work" so to speak] and said it's a wonderful, fulfilling career and said I'd do well. My grandma on the opposite side of my family was also a nurse, so I hope to do her proud.
I'm already loving things so far- I find anatomy and biology as a whole deeply fascinating. I'm some kind of freak because I did the anatomy of the heart chapter yesterday and almost started crying because I thought it was so beautiful ^^; I know, I have something wrong with me. But I'm also trying to use my courses in the meantime before this one to hopefully broaden my horizons and be a better person for my future patients. Anything to make them more comfortable.
#we have a larger Indigenous population here than other places around so I took an Indigenous literature course [run by a lovely metis woman]#[she basically treated us like her own family and it was so sweet] to try and understand the experiences and cultures a bit more#there's also some Indigenous language courses I'm hoping to take because language has such a deep connection to culture#and I imagine having a white nurse could be uncomfortable for them. but I want them to feel safe#I think the best way to do that is to be empathetic; hear their stories and learn their culture#and that way I'll better understand how to make people comfortable#I think that in work like what I'll be getting into understanding and respecting your patients is very important#and like... there are probably dynamics at play I don't know and that long predate me#I need to do right by everyone I'll work with. it's my responsibility to listen and do well

always darkly funny to me that rye really went through the whole story sucessfully going '*deep breath* if there's to be any hope for this world we must always hold to mercy. mercy, mercy, mercy, in the faith that new flowers might one day bloom on ancient graves' and then at the very last possible hurdle goes 'actually you know what. mercy rescinded. murder time now'. it's so not the character arc I expected him to have going in but I am absolutely DELIGHTED that that is how it shook out, it's so fraught and complicated and chewy. my secretly vengeful babyboy. local man joins the cyclical nature of violence on the side of violence at the last possible minute, fully aware that he's missing the point but too pissed off and plain done with this shit to care, beware the fury of a patient watcher etc., maybe you should have thought about it a bit harder before you made me quite so much in your own image. (I love the fact that this means he echoes exactly what he did to baron van markham before the start of the game once more. solas this could have been predicted if you'd been paying attention lol the last guy who really pissed him off could fit in an envelope now) and then once the most acute bloodlust fades he has to spend the rest of his life wondering what varric and harding would have thought, because he'll never get to ask them; 'we'll never get to fix it', as taash says. what is it going to be like, having to forgive yourself while not knowing if someone you loved would do the same. sooooo much delicious narrative space to work with here. at least lucanis is there to go 'nah u good. you want pancakes? I was thinking about making pancakes' lol emotional support ride or die or stab bae <3
gravekeeper left once more with nothing but a grave and a 'varric I'm sorry you thought I was a hero but unfortunately. I am just me' in his heart he never gets to hear the answer to :') delicate thematic echoes and overtones of hawke once more. now you're gone and all I have left of you are stories.
(in some strange ways I think it's a more honest appreciation/appraisal of solas' virtues than the redeem ending would be for rye specifically though. the main upside to the redeem ending outside of any emotional attachment you have to solas himself (I know I do! I did go into this game with a decade of wanting to save this motherfucker from himself behind me, let's not get anything twisted) is his stated intent to try to soothe the dreams of the titans and so maybe end the blight once and for all. but the thing is... is anything stopping him from doing that if you fight him or especially when you trick him and he is lucid enough to eat his humble pie with something like grace? with seemingly all of eternity to maybe chill out and really think about it, is he incapable of reaching that conclusion rationally and compassionately on his own?? my angle on it for my own sake (not rye's. rye does not give a fuck at that point either way lol) ended up being something like hey solas I know -- I know!! -- there is goodness in you and I am DONE trying to hold on it for you. I love you but I love you like an adult and that means I can't keep taking responsibility for your actions. either you wisen up in your veil babyjail timeout and start to help ease the pain you caused because it's the right thing to do on your own damn initiative (WHICH AGAIN I THINK YOU'RE FULLY CAPABLE OF! I can see in you the things cole saw in you even if you're happy to throw them all on your bonfire of martyrdom), or get off the fucking board already this is not actually a game, I can't afford to gamble on you like this when the stakes are 'everything and everyone'. and no we don't know how that's going to work out long-term, but neither can you know it will work out when he sets out to do it intentionally. if anything, considering solas' track record with his actual stated plans... it might conceivably cause less trouble in the long run fhaskj.
anyway I think the ending choices are quite interesting that way, and not quite as black and white as they seem at first glance. the redeem ending is of course the most straightforwardly 'breaking the cycle' 'right' option thematically, but I'm glad they acknowledge that it stretches credulity very nearly to the point of utter irresponsibility to gamble on solas changing his mind and not stabbing you in the back this time, for sure. I know he did it again literally five minutes ago, but this time he'll prove himself! as the player we can find out and kind of expect our faith will be finally rewarded b/c story structure and gaming conventions and so on, but rook has no way of knowing that going in, and it starts to veer close to the definition of insanity territory at some point. I love solas, and it's good that you have the option to put his turmoil to rest and help him come to peace with himself (in my other playthrough I will!). but the fate of the world is not and should not be contingent on one man's goodness, is what I think I'm trying to say. if the game is telling you anything it's that the world is way weirder, more diverse and more resilient than that. even through the blight flowers can grow. with or without you, along with you or in spite of you, we will thrive. and I don't think 'you have to make your own choice here and reap the consequences, I can't and I don't have the responsibility to make it for you' is the wrong conclusion to draw, necessarily, it's just a conclusion. I'm so impressed by how solas is written in this game, there truly are so many conflicting things about him that are true at the same time and depending on the perspective you choose to bring to it.)
#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#oc: Ellaryen Ingellvar#solas#Dynamic: That my keen knife see not the wound it makes#also I think being surprised by the thing my character did is symptomatic of how much rook can feel grounded in the world#rye really does feel less like an rpg protagonist and more like some guy who already existed in thedas and whomst I get to love#and also sometimes I get to choose what he says lol but the 'he wouldn't fucking say that' moments are few and far between#this post happened to me while I should have been doing something else more productive. but what else is new lol#rose de riva is going to have the opposite arc where it's like... an eye for an eye population: you right up until the end where she's like#actually. how many eyes are we going to go through this is getting kind of silly. don't you just. want to go home. i want to go home#you're a loyal hound I'm a loyal hound. we're not so different you and I but I forgave viago for letting go of me somewhere along the way#I think you kind of need to do the same thing bro. your girlfriend is in the car outside and she seems pretty worried about you ngl#I'm tired of going ape shit. Hmm, I'm not sure why, but something doesn't sit right with me when some people are so quick to dismiss female omegas, the secondary gender that is so often world built with traditonaly women's roles and issues in mind, in the omegaverse especially when they're paired with a male partner, particularly a male alpha.
#not saying it's everyone#but i see it often enough#straight presenting ships have a place in the omegaverse too#lowkey how some of you gonna world build the omega population being majority female then demonize them#omegaverse#female omega#alpha/beta/omega dynamics#technically speaking any alpha x omega pairing in the omegaverse could be considered a straight ship
