I really feel like one of the best details in “A Scandal in Bohemia” that I never see people fixate on enough is that the story starts with Watson stopping in to see Holmes at Baker Street on a complete whim, because he happens to see that he’s home (and Watson is now married and living elsewhere). Like he doesn’t send word first, he’s not invited, he just shows up and surprises Holmes. Which is not that weird but then Holmes is like “oh good, I’ve got a case anyway, you might as well hang out!” which just makes it funnier when the King shows up and is like “I’d really rather speak to you alone, actually” and Watson tries to leave and Holmes is just like “anything you can say to me, you can say to my best friend John Watson, and if you ask him to leave, I would consider it a grave insult, you would be my enemy and I will not help you ever!!” And the king is like “…ok” and just moves on.
like, that is crazy behavior. Holmes is talking about how there’s probably lots of money in this case, and then almost turns away the client for…not knowing who the fuck Watson is?? He’s not even supposed to be there?? He just came to say hi?? “It is both or none”… girl, GET UP.

I just came up with the headcanon that Sherlock ages into just the sappiest, emotional old man.
Like I've already decided that the Sherlock who made his first and last vow at John and Mary's wedding was already a sappy sentimental muffin who was just too Sherlock to admit that he had the same "chemical defect" he claimed everyone else suffered from.
He did everything in his power to protect the Watsons from Mary's past, (Canon divergence time!) he helped John raise Rosie when he was too consumed by grief to do it by himself, he went on to marry John and adopt Watson, and ultimately ended up retiring to a life as a beekeeper in a little cottage with his husband John by his side.
After retiring from being a detective, he was finally able to let go of the high functioning sociopath facade which was vital for the sake of his work.
It's just fun to imagine the same Sherlock who claimed he doesn't have a heart, made fun of John's emails to his girlfriends and was genuinely confused when everyone started crying at his speech, became the most caring, the biggest pushover, wrote mushy poetry for his husband and cried when deeply moved by things. A version of Sherlock who would utterly confuse a Sherlock about fifty years younger.
Instead of being afraid of emotion, he doesn't hold back. His joy and excitement when tending to his bees equals his enthusiasm when solving interesting murders. Beekeeping and crime solving both being special interests of his, causing similar amounts of serotonin. Like imagine Sherlock dancing around his back garden as he tended to the bees, flapping his hands excitedly, feeling like a child on Christmas morning.
Sherlock looking at old pictures of when he and John first met, of Rosie as a baby, of his and John's wedding and every time, without fail, being unable to hold the nostalgic tears back. A mix of happiness and melancholy would wash over him as he relived wonderful moments he would never be able to get back.
Sherlock finds that his life feels fuller and more vibrant when he allows himself to experience his emotions unfiltered. He let go of his "sentiment is a chemical defect found in the losing side" perspective decades ago. He found that that part of him died when he jumped off the roof of Barts Hospital and lived through two of the loneliest years of his life.

Vienna

Slow down you crazy child
You're so ambitious for a juvenile
The music flowed out of the speaker at a medium volume. Sherlock had taken John's hands in his and they were slowly swaying to the beat. John's head rested against Sherlock’s chest.
If you're so smart then why are still so afraid ?
Sherlock didnt let himself think about the lyrics to the song. He couldn't. If he did he wouldn't be able to stop the tears. John unknowingly felt the same.
"One last dance?" Sherlock had proposed when they took a break from packing up the rest of their apartment. Their lives.
It only seemed right that it would be this song.
When will you realize..
They spun around and John laughed a small sad laugh. It felt like he was leaving a piece of his soul behind.
..Vienna waits for you
Without Mrs. Hudson, 221B would never feel right. It was for the better, Sherlock thought. If he had a soul he would probably feel similar to John.
As the song ended they held onto each other for stability. They sat there glued together and silently crying for an unknown amount of time.
Mrs. Hudson was like a mother to both of them, without her 221B was a husk of memories, moving was the only way they were going to heal.
Everything they were doing was for the better but it didn't mean they didn't feel like shit about it.
They embraced with a kiss that was salty from the tears and broke apart to continue packing.
The music changed to What you Won't do for Love by Bobby Caldwell and they both smirked as they finished taping boxes.
I guess you wonder where I've been...

bruh ok listen; i’m sleep deprived and this is just gonna be me ranting but this has been on my mind for too long and i just. like ik all of this has been discussed before but the devils foot is so good?? like the entirety of it is just holmes and watson demonstrating how much they care for each other the whole thing is just so tender and soft. starts off with w taking h on a trip bc he knows he needs a break and is worried abt his physical and mental health which is like ok pretty sure only gay ppl do that sorry but then there’s that wholeass romance trope where w saves h’s life by carrying him out of that poison gas house and is trying to wake him up on the grass cuz he’s kinda poisoned and only half dead. isn’t this like a cliche romance thing idk but THEN h decides nows a good time to apologize for almost killing them both lol oops and w pulls the whole “well yk id do anything for you” like huh ?? and this is before sterndale says he killed the guy bc he was avenging his lover and h is like ah yes. id do that. anyway shits a love story

here is some fluff.
they hold hands when they're nervous. And John gives tiny kisses to Sherlock when he tenses up. Sherlock is also fiercly protective of john!! He would cave someone skull in if they hurt john. and john is a former lab mouse because mouse colonialism is- really out of hand
I can say this. because i made this dumb thing
Mice aren't homophobic, why are we?!!
Oh. I want someone to look at me like Watson looks at Holmes.

ACD johnlock harry potter au where watson is actually a wizard, tells holmes after they get married in secret-because same sex marriage is normal in magical Britain. Cmon, with all that blood purity thing, there surely was some pureblood who would rather marry the same gender instead of a muggle-but instead of holmes claiming it ridiculous and hating it, he is absolutely FASCINATED about it.
He studies diagon ally. He wonders and questions watson-cus I hc that he also went through healer training for wixens-if their anatomy is any different. He runs experiments-under watson’s supervision, of course-on potions.
Give me john watson being afraid of getting rejected by someone as logical as holmes, and so, SO relieved and full of love when he is accepted. When he is still seen as his husband, partner, instead of something weird.
Give me sherlock holmes who is just so fascinated about his husband’s new side he never knew about, and it doesn’t change anything about the man he loves. He tells him how he brings new colorful adventures to his previous monotone life.
Give me holmes and watson, the victorian husbands who would accept and love each other no matter what.

Uhhhh... spontaneous 630ish words about Holmes observing hangry Watson...
--
My Watson, generally speaking, is driven more by emotion than hard logic. Regardless, though he is prone to romanticise the mundane and to flights of fancy, he is on the whole reliably sensible.
He has his blind spots, as do all men. The lengths of his temper and ambition equally shift depending on his moods, and when they do not match up he becomes rather upset with himself. He is a frequent insomniac who waxes often about the importance of sleep. My Watson exhausts himself in service to others and would run himself into the ground if not forced to take time to rest, frequently by his own health. It is then his habit, whenever he has need to be cared for, to apologise incessantly over his 'being a burden'. I have had the mind, on more than one of these occasions, to quite shortly inform him that the only 'burden' in the situation is the weight of his irritating apologies. I have not in fact, as I am sure that to do so would be ruinously rude.
On the subject of rudeness, though its expression is usually restrained to the page, it will become apparent that contrary to his usual projection as a perfect gentleman, my Watson is in possession of a razor-sharp tongue. He does not, in the privacy of his own head, refrain from making harsh judgements on the people he meets - though he does endeavour not to act upon them. More than once, his editor has requested him to 'tone down' a description that comes off as overly unkind, regardless of its accuracy, and there are several examples in his works that my Watson now regrets.
His regret is unfortunate then to the simple fact that when his mood turns sour - out of pain, weariness, the weather, or most frequently, hunger - the grate through which he filters his thoughts before they reach his mouth is the first defence to fall. I have more than enough confidence to assert that a hungry Watson will make statements that sated he would not dare. If ever I am surprised by a cruel remark, or he begins to swear and to become argumentative, it is always most useful to consider the likelihood of him speaking over an empty belly, and that ascertained is ordinarily enough to determine the weight that ought to be placed on his words. I have gathered this from observation, and also heard it from the man himself.
Not too long into our acquaintance, he gave me the following briefing on the heels of his starting an argument an hour before luncheon, which had sent him muttering and stalking up to his bedroom.
"I will warn you not to listen to me when I'm hungry," he said, "or at least not to take anything from it. It's just that I lay a very short fuse on an empty stomach, and all that comes out of me is hot air. I often don't realise it myself, and I'm awfully sorry to offend you."
I am not so thin-skinned as to be offended by a dear friend's careless remark and I know my Watson enough by now to read the change of his manner well in advance, I certainly do not need to wait for the rumbling of his belly to know that his fuse is growing short. He rounds his shoulders and starts to frown. When reading he is prone to mutter, and writing, his penmanship suffers. If we are out, then he changes his grip on his cane. As a whole, the shortening of his temper and the loosing of his tongue is just a very small part. He does not however, appreciate my pointing out of these symptoms, even though I am sure he would find them quite useful.

I have no idea if this poll will have as much widespread appeal as some of the others, but this idea popped into my head and felt like a fun one to me, so...
Now you can take this whatever direction you'd like: who you realistically think you're the closest match to, or pure wish fulfillment who'd you most enjoy being. I'd love to see people's reasonings for their choices in the comments and tags. x3 Please reblog for a larger sample size!
In my case, I'd love to think I'm the Watson as a loyal friend, but I'm far too squeamish to be helpful with most medical needs besides basic first aid, and I would NOT be any help in a fight, I'm running in the other direction and yanking Sherly with me the second there's gunshots, bye. I think I'm mostly likely Mrs. Hudson--responsible, own a home, love Sherly and Watson despite their faults, still deeply loyal and tough in my own way even if I'm not in the thick of the danger, a bit of a homebody probably and good at whipping up some tea/food.
With all that said, interpret these roles any way you want! That will be a big part of the fun for this one, seeing how people decide and back up their picks. :)

Hotting and hollering at this part of The Reigate Puzzle
Tumblr media
Client: Hey Watson your detective is looking kind of excitable.. kind of manic and off-putting dare I say, are you sure he should be working in his sickly state (he'd just been hospitalized so a fair worry ngl)
Mad lad John: no he's just Like That, give him 2 days and he'll solve your murder and probably three more crimes you didn't know happened.
In addition, anothet part of this story that I find HILARIOUS is that Holmes & Watson explicitly go to the country to REST, we are RESTING and RECIVERING Sherlock and not FIGHTING CRIME
Holmes two seconds later: Okay I know you said no crime.. but this guy just got murdered sooo
And watson just accepts it because no way is this gayass inspector gonna back down now
I love them theyre so stupid
