i made slides to explain my specific versions of the Turtles for my fic, True Colors of Ikigai. it's Leonardo-centric about family feels and queer themes with angst and fluff and humor.

We have my drawings of the guys on the left and then their respective inspirations on the right.

🔵 Leonardo: 19 year old Red-eared Slider Kind, Reserved & Earnest. he is based most heavily on 1990 Leo. Voice is 2003.

🔴 Raphael: 19 year old Alligator Snapping Turtle Temperamental, Loyal & Headstrong. he's basically a mix of 1990 and 2007 Raph. Voice is 2007.

🟣 Donatello: 18 year old Eastern Spiny Softshell Smug (after giving it more thought, i think the better word to use is: Flippant) Wry & Rational my Donnie isn't really similar to the other Donnie's, but he is sarcastic and rude like in Rise. Voice is... ngl i've been imagining jason bateman. maybe Batman vs.

🟠 Michelangelo: 17 year old Southern Painted Turtle Loving, Humorous & Carefree Mikey is Mikey, tho he is closest to 1990 and Rise. Voice is 2007.

Character Info and Story Below!

~~~~~~Backstory~~~~~~

Dr Shen Hamato was part of a small team (if you can call three people a 'team') of researchers creating and studying the effects of a substance called 'Mutagen'. This substance, created by Dr Barry 'Drax' Draxum, was designed to speed up the evolutionary process. In most subjects, this would simply remove unnecessary organs or alter their size but in a few cases, the turtles they were testing on became humanoid. While exciting, the trio couldn't figure out what was causing this very specific reaction in less than a handful of painted turtles. Shortly after the success that was the twins, Drax and Baxter Stockman disappeared. While Shen did suspect foul play, they vanished several days apart. Despite seemingly falling off the face of the earth, no one came to repossess or even look into the facility. Shen simply continued to live there with the four turtles.

For a l o n g time, it was just the five of them. That is… until they found Raph halfway into the first major arc with a drive initialed B.S. around his neck.

Ages and species: Leo is an 18 yro Midland Painted turtle Mikey is a 17 yro Western Painted turtle Donnie and… teal? (we'll get back to her) are twins. They're 15 and Southern Painted turtles Raph is the youngest by almost 3 years. He's 13 and an Eastern Painted turtle

Speaking of Donnie's twin, I don't know what to name her. She's inspired by Venus de Milo, Frida, and Artemisia but I'm conflicted on what to name her. I want her to match her siblings in being named after an Italian Renaissance Artist but there's simultaneously so many and so few options.

Leo has a jacket instead of a scarf now ( due to some stuff I added to the doc and realized his design needed an update to reflect the changes) he also has two stripes and a bit of a different head shape. also longer pants. I'm trying a new eye design too, but I've tried it before and get tired of it easily so we'll see how long that lasts!

Mikey is more round. That's p much it cause he was perfect from the get-go LMAO l. Also made him even younger to better reflect mine and my youngest sibling's own age gap ( which is actually 8 years, but I couldn't make it that big or they would be the teenage mutant ninja turtles anymore ).

Donnie finally got a gov. Designated turtle species!!! I ended up going with Southern Painted turtle so he and Leo kinda match!! He also got a snoot!! And became a noodle :)

Raph is almost exactly the same except more square, with shorter mask tails.

I've simplified all their limbs to match their hands too, plus I like this look better overall. I've been thinking about changing Leo's mask tails to look more like styled hair, but I really really like him with the long flowing ones, so we'll just have to see :)

I've added so much to the Google doc that I an risking getting way too excited for it and not finishing other stuff, but thankfully writing it down here means I will have to be held accountable and that I'll have to finish stuff!! Plus I'm sure everyone wants to know what happens at the end of the Kid Leo au ;)

Kids AU

My first big piece in a while! Not my best work but better than i expected :)

I can finally introduce my Kids AU! Set approximately 20 years after canon, the Hamato Clan has grown bigger with the next generation. The turtles and their friends have all grown up and have children of their own. One winter day they get visited by the teenage 2012!Turtles and Friends and 2012 suddenly realizes they do have a future despite being mutant turtles...

Meet the kids!

Zack, Zero, and Yelda

The turtle twins Zack and Zero are the oldest! They're in the back: Zero is the white mask and Zack is the black mask. Raph adopted them. They're mutated southern painted turtles. Yelda is the youngest! She's the lizard yokai up front with the yellow stripes. Yelda is Zack and Zero's step-sister, and the only true bio baby here.

Suki

It can be argued that Suki is actually the oldest, but the turtles didnt know about her until several months after Raph became a dad. Leo's long distance boyfriend from Earth-2 shows up with a magic clone baby of himself and Leo fell in love a second time. Yuichi thinks she's named after the moon (tsuki), Leo actually suggested the name because he's a ATLA fan (he tried to get her to fight with fans for so long). Her family spends most of the year traveling on Earth-2, but they spend the winters home in climate controlled New York. There is a samurai/ninja rivalry between her fathers. She's a ninja but Yuichi hasnt given up on it just being a phase

SHELLDON, Micky, and Rochelle

SHELLDON is still a AI, and spends his days traveling, but twins Micky (Michelle) and Rochelle are clone babies! Donnie was hurt Casey went to Draxum for her clone baby so Donnie had to make a superior clone baby and the twins were created. Donnie has made them their own battle shells and tech-bos for protection. Unlike Zero and Zack, these twins do not get along.

Billy

William Hamato-Morales. Billy is the one in the striped shirt! He was fostered and later adopted by Mikey and Miles! He's the second youngest but newest addition to the family. His family lives topside.

J.J., C.C., and Shadow

J.J., full name Casey Jones II, is Casey's clone baby mentioned above. He's way in the back. Casey wanted a heir for her brownie empire when Raph got his kids so she asked Draxum to build her a baby. He's closest with Zero and Zack. J.J. stands for "Jones Junior". C.C., full name Casey-Marie O'Neil-Jones, is J.J.'s half sister. April lost a bet and had to name her firstborn after Casey. She's the one holding the "camera". C.C. was a result of April and Casey's relationship, of which they are no longer together. Thats where Shadow comes in! Casey married Gaby (Gabrielle) and Shadow became her step-daughter. She's the one with the horrendous bangs i need to fix so dont look too close at her lol. C.C. and Shadow are the same age and best friends

Ability and Drawback: Wound transfer

Leo has the ability to 'heal' someone of their injuries, or move injuries from person to person.

This is done by focusing on the target's injured area mentally and being close to the target. The feeling of using the power is like a cooling sensation, followed by whatever the target was feeling physically when they received the injury (so if they were full of adrenaline, he gets an adrenaline rush and such). The pain they felt still makes itself known, but usually a higher pain tolerance makes it more bearable. Leo has an incredible pain tolerance due to using this power so frequently and the types of injuries the others sustain. Still, painkillers definitely help with this. Any scars may still be present on the target after healing, and injuries like broken bones will still need to be set prior to transfer or they will 'heal' incorrectly (see: Raphael's crooked nose). The ooze has a radiating effect that draws the injury off of the target with a cooling sensation.

This doesn't actually get rid of the problem. He transfers the injury instead, usually opting to move it onto his own body since it takes a bit of time to transfer injuries, plus he still needs to receive the injury on his own body first before moving it to someone else. He is also limited to physical injuries only (illnesses and underlying conditions do not work with this ability unless they cause direct injury which CAN be used).

Personality:

Leo is always thinking and worrying about things, whether it's him worrying about his brothers, worrying about a mission, or worrying about other things. He uses his overthinking to his advantage, though. In battle, he thinks about the outcome of things before he does them, and everything he does is carefully planned out in his head.

He worries quite a bit, but he doesn’t let that stop him from trying to have some semblance of relaxation and peace. He values his relaxation time and time with his family (which mostly go hand-in-hand) quite a lot.

Sometimes his authority can come off a bit strong and demanding which has caused some disagreements between the four. In the end, he always has their safety and best interests in mind, no matter how unpopular the opinion is.

He leads with confidence, even if he’s terrified or uncertain about what he’s doing. He puts on a brave face anyways, since he has faith in his family, and they trust him.

Mikey:

He wishes he could rely on Mikey to be more serious about things. He clashes with Mikey sometimes over it, but the two still have a very tight relationship. Leo is a bit envious of his more laid back personality and wishes to be as stress free as he is. He confides in him about his lack of confidence in some of the choices he makes as a leader, but Mikey assures him that whatever choice he makes, he knows it's in the best interest of everyone.

Leo knows he can go to Mikey with any problems or woes he has, though sometimes he wishes Mikey would talk to him a tad more about how HE is feeling. He worries about his mental state, feeling like there's some things he just wont share with him and that maybe the jokes and seeming carelessness are just a facade for his real thoughts and emotions. He respects his twin though and refuses to put pressure on him to open up.

The two will sometimes just talk for hours to each other just to talk and bond over whatever- the newest comic they had seen, maybe some new music the other heard, lighthearted arguments about what pizza topping is the best (Obviously a simple pepperoni pizza)- anything. He also helps Mikey with his creative endeavors, and sometimes will create alongside him (even if the result isn't good).

Donnie:

Leo wants to sometimes pick his younger brother's brain to just see all the things he knows, but he thinks the sheer amount of knowledge would be intensely overwhelming. Leo worries about the safety regarding his experiments sometimes, but he knows that Donnie knows what he's doing and trusts him wholeheartedly. He supports his little brother's science endeavors, even if he doesn't understand it himself sometimes. He just finds the importance of supporting him no matter what.

The two tend to bond when they are working on their own things, but in each other's presence. Leo keeps Donnie company, and will sometimes play music on his guitar while the other works. He likes to ask questions about whatever Donnie is working on, much to his delight. If Leo sees he is particularly focused, though, he will just play and practice his guitar and body double with him.

Raph:

Leo tries to keep his youngest brother reigned in because he would absolutely go for the ankles if you let him (not to say Donnie or Mikey wouldn't either, but he keeps Raph out of trouble the most). He loves him just the same, though. He worries so much about his health, considering he had bad health issues (including what he and Donnie refer to PMFD, or Premature Mutant Flu Disorder) when they were younger and had some serious close brushes with death. Raph HATES that he does this. Sometimes, Leo needs to be reminded that his youngest brother isn’t the same sickly baby turtle he used to be, and is a strong growing turtle.

Outside of that, their bond is solid otherwise. The two will play Minecraft together frequently and skate together a lot. Leo and Raph will have solo sparring and training matches, which they also bond over. He is glad that his brother takes his training as seriously as he does, even if the training is sometimes used as an outlet for his emotions.

Trivia:

*Leo is younger than Mikey by several minutes, and is also twins with him.

*Leo has protanopia color blindness, meaning he can only see in shades of blues and yellows. He picked his bandana based on the fact that blue was the color that stood out most to him.

*He is polydactyl, having 4 fingers and toes instead of 3. He would have had an extra finger/toe regardless if he was mutated or not.

*He also has heterochromia

*Leo has a (even if slightly weak) telepathic link with Mikey, possibly as a result of the ooze. He can tell when Mikey is nearby and how far, can sometimes communicate through simple eye contact, and can feel when he's dealing with drawback or intense emotions. When he does this, his eyes both turn orange.

*He has an electric guitar he was able to get repaired with the help of Donnie and Mikey he affectionately named Rose

*Leo, like the others, doesn't believe Mikey has an ability. However, he does feel like he's hiding something from him.

*Mikey refers to Leo's ability as 'minty hands'

*He might be the best swimmer out of the four, since he spends most of his time soaking and swimming

TMNT Uprising AU

So about a year ago I made my own tmnt au and I've decided to start working on it again. So, I'm gonna share some of what I have so far. Let me know if you all want to see more content related to this.

Basically, in this AU mutants are known to exist and are targeted/used by the government. Despite this, the turtles still do their usual vigilante stuff. That is until they become targets themselves. When they become targets they decide to essentially go on strike and rise up against the government. They refuse to help people until the government/society accept mutants into society so they no longer have to hide.

So! Yeah! My own TMNT! Woo! Short synopsis is that this takes place in 2037, because futuristic stuff is my jam.

TL;DR: I mashed 2012 with Rise and this spawned out of it.

Leo: He’s a yellow bellied slider and is the second oldest (15)He’s 6’2 in height, being the tallest, and he’s very cocky and confident in his leadership skills (he’s not)! Very respectful though and sometimes patient (emphasis on sometimes).

Donnie: The twin to Leo (denies it) but is the third oldest! Standing at 6’0, he’s a southern painted turtle, and is the second strongest out of them all! He’s much more sarcastic (on purpose and on not) and is a giant lovable dork when allowed to infodump.

Raph: Surprise, he’s the youngest (14)! He is hotheaded sometimes, but it’s mostly rare and he’s just very…quiet. He for the most part rages internally, and he looks up to Leo a lot. He’s the strongest out of all the turtles! He likes to gloat to Mikey that yes, he might be younger, but he’s still taller! He is a northern red-bellied cooter.

Mikey: And thus this leaves Mikey as the oldest (16)! He’s the shortest (out of the turtles) at 5’8, and he’s a total goofball! He loved to goof off and is a very irresponsible older brother, though he cares deeply for all of his brothers and does look out for them when he can. He’s the local therapist, essentially. He’s also a spotted box turtle!

Casey Jones: GOONGALA! Casey is 16, and is 5’6 in height! He’s a vigilante, living among the streets for the most part, but he has a younger sister and dad waiting for him at home! He’s a but if a troublemaker, but knows when to pay attention and go serious when needed. (Fun fact: his mask is a Jason mask he found in the trash! He painted on all the cool marks.)

April O’Neil: She’s very punk and is age 15! She’s very much a rebel has been in and out of jobs, all for her parents, of course. She’s the gremlin sister the turtles never knew they needed! She takes inspiration from old stuff from the 80s and early 2000s era for music and closing wise.

Agh, anyways a fun little thing I made up is that Mikey dipped everyone’s masks in neon paint so they all glow in the dark now. (The whole aesthetic is Neon and Punk if it isn’t obvious, trying to go in that direction.)

Omg so I saw the post about what if the reader was turned into a mutant turtle, and i absolutely loved that idea, I personally would probably be a southern river cooter since they are pretty small…I think and I think Raph wouldn’t mind that if that was the case. And now I want to draw that so bad 😭✋

You totally should!! ( Raph definitely wouldn't mind it ) I've seen your art and I love your style so much! I have complete faith that it'd turn out amazing! Like, I remember pretty vividly that one 2012 Mikey art you drew with an oc for a fanfic if I'm not wrong? The colors were so pretty and vibrant and honestly, I was kind of obsessed with it fjsnfjksw I just really enjoy seeing very colourful art 🥰 for me I'd probably go for a painted turtle, since (if I'm not wrong) they enjoy basking in the sun and are pretty docile creatures. And that pretty much vibes with me in general, so If I ever made a mutant turtle sona for myself, I'd use that species I think :))

New TMNT OC?? yeah. meet Galileo

it was created after the original four and is a southern painted turtle. despite being created after the original 4, they are older then Raph due to being a older turtle when mutated (about 5 when mutated, made 2 years after the OGs) They we're created by Draxum as a last ditch attempt and were part of the same batch as Venus de Milo, with these two being the only survivors for health reasons. (others were born with deformities that couldn't be fixed and died not long after hatching/mutation)

Galileo renamed themself from Madonna (after Madonna of Burges) around age 13, mutation year 8, when it realized they were trans. he doesn't have mystic powers and doesn't have Hamato DNA, but that is still considered a sibling by the turtles, if only a half sibling really.

Galileo, despite their name, is less interested in astronomy and prefers paleontology. they specifically prefer carnivorous theropods and will go out of their way to correct people on facts and anatomy. it is autistic as well, dinosaurs actually being his special interest. That prefers that/it/he/they pronouns and is agender. They're 5'8 and had to have braces as a kid, they fear doing that again but also hate their retainer, so it's a difficult balance. Galileo's colors are seen as Yellow, but that actually prefers orange or red. They took yellow cause Venus took green, so they could be lemon lime :)) Galileo's weapons are clawed hand armor/metal glove things (idk what they're called ;-;) and boots with spurs, as they prefer hand-to-hand combat.

When they finally meet the Hamato's it's during the awkward family dinner scene, Draxum insisting on bringing his children to meet their half-siblings. Venus and Galileo sat side by side, literally, and watched the chaos go down until Mikey dragged them in. Mikey and Galileo get along well, Venus and Galileo are typical siblings, Raph and Galileo don't get along the best at times but they manage, Leo and Galileo aren't that close but still enjoy hanging out, Donnie and Galileo are really close, almost as close as Venus, and share a love for science, biology and facts in general. April and Galileo are pretty good friends, not sibling level of friends, but close enough to have 'girls nights' with Venus, Mikey and Donnie. Splinter, Venus and Galileo all have a strained relationship, as Splinter sees them as his children not long after they meet, but Venus and Galileo don't see him as their father, but as an adult who happens to be involved. Eventually they do slowly see him as a father, but it takes a while.l and some perseverance.

TMNT Kids Names

I’ve noticed a trend in the TMNT fandom where almost everybody gives the turtles’ children (especially Leo’s) Japanese names. Now, I’m not saying this is bad or wrong in anyway. It’s your headcanon--go wild. But for my personal tastes, I do find it a little awkward. 

Besides certain series like 2012, I don’t see any of the guys having a strong enough connection to Japanese culture to name their children in this way. They were “born” in America and don’t even have Japanese names themselves (excluding the last name Hamato, which is only canon in the 2012 series, hence why I singled that one out). Heck, I see this trend with the Bayverse turtles the most, but that Splinter isn’t even from Japan as Hamato Yoshi or his pet--he was just a lab rat with no memory before then.

Now, that is not to say they don’t have a connection to Japan (and obviously Splinter in most of the other series is from Japan, whether man or rat), but there is a difference between appreciating Japanese culture and using Japanese names for children with potentially no Japanese heritage. Most of their connection to the culture is solely them training as ninja. If their kids’ mother is Japanese in your headcanon (or you just prefer these names) then again, don’t listen to me. Do your thing. XD

But I feel we are missing out on another naming theme that has a much better connection with the turtles: Italian Renaissance painters. Because where do the guys’ names come from?

So, to cut this short, none of the guys have Japanese names, but they do have a naming scheme that they feel proud of... most likely. So instead of giving their kids names from Japan, why not give them names like their father?

I actually have a few suggestions that I like, so if you want, read more below. These are some really cool artists too!

Okay, so starting off with girl names, since female Renaissance artists are hard to find (to the point I included some Baroque artists too), I have a few ideas:

Artemisia - Let’s start with the technically Baroque artist, Artemisia Gentileschi. She was Italian, so at least that follows the name scheme, and had some of the harshest art at the time. Most of her art depicted women in non-traditional roles, often powerful and violent. Her art was shaped by a horrible tragedy in her past--being taken advantage of by one of her father’s partners--so she wanted to depict women as not subservient creatures, but people with their own minds and strength. Her art was specialized in women of myth who had suffered. Personally, I feel like Raph or Leo would like this name because of how powerful it sounds. It is derived from a masculine version of Artemis, after all. Name your daughter after a goddess! Example of her art (title - Jael and Sisera):

Marietta - Next, we have Marietta Robusti, another Italian painter from an artistic family. She is the eldest daughter of Tintoretto, another famous Italian painter. Sounds like the perfect name for a daddy’s girl. XD Marietta does not have much art attributed to her, due to being a woman, but it is said she assisted her father with his paintings. Lavinia - After the Italian painter, Lavinia Fontana, best known for doing portraits and being one of the first female career artists--her family actually relied on her income as a painter rather than her husband’s, who served as her agent and raised their eleven children. She was also one of the first women to paint female nudes, but that’s a bit controversial. XD At the time she became famous, there was a high demand for portraits, so Lavinia had many clients. She was especially good with female clients, many of whom became namesakes and godmothers to her children. In regard to her female nudes, it was actually socially unacceptable for women at the time to be exposed to nudity--to the point that if anyone found out she used live models her entire reputation would be tarnished. It is theorized that she used family members as models to get around this, as her art was extremely accurate at depicting disproportionate bodies like they naturally are. So now we move onto the guys, though these are much easier to find (and I’m getting tired =_=), so I’ll be a bit shorter here. Now, if I’m being honest, the guy names sound weirder than the girls’, but then again the turtles’ name would sound weird if we weren’t used to them too:

Lorenzo - Coming from Lorenzo Costa, Italian painter. Not much is known about him (or at least I couldn’t find much), but I like the name! Example of his art (title - Holy Family):

Antonello - I could see Donnie using this because it sounds like his name. Anyway, this is from the painter Antonello de Messina. He was known for his unison of Italian simplicity and Flemish attention to detail. He even influenced artists from northern Italy, despite being from southern Italy himself. Example of his art (title - The Virgin Annunciate): 

This is getting a bit long, so I’m gonna stop it here. I’m not even an art history buff, what am I doing writing so much? XD

Anyway, I hope anyone who actually read through this liked what I had to share. I found this name theme much more fun than just slapping Japanese names on the turtles’ kids. Though, if I’m being honest, I feel like only Leo and Donnie might go for this theme (Leo for family tradition and interest, and Donnie solely for interest). I see Raph and Mikey as the types to use more regular names for their kids.
