Ik I have a whole ass blog for this shit but I know it won't get any attention over there (lol) so I'm posting it here 🫶 minors dni please and thanks, content warning for guns and um. Um. (No sex just extremely suggestive) I like to imagine Vas gets very antsy when he's flustered. It's my new favorite thing. I love torturing men.

The man's head immediately snapped up upon hearing her kind voice. The blonde woman was making her way through the trees, smiling down pleasantly as the Russian man was settled on the ground, rifle in hand. Her deep blue eyes took notice of the gun. The butt rested on the snowy floor, the barrel pointing at the sky above, while Vasily tinkered with something on its side. Curious, the German woman joined him, watching and teasing him as he worked. “Playing with toys?”

The redhead huffed, ignoring her little comment which made her giggle. She leaned in closer. Her hand rested on his knee. “Why, it's certainly a pretty toy… I think I've seen it before, Mosin-Nagant, ja?”

Impressed by her knowledge, Vasily nodded. His silent praise only made her smile widen. “I'm not too familiar with weapons, but my father being the man he was, he was very interested in what was used in the war, he talked to me about some of it… ah, but I'm rambling. You barely understand a word I'm saying.”

Her eyes traveled lower down his rifle. What amused her was the position of it, settled between his legs the way it was… it reminded her of another weapon of his she had the pleasure of seeing just a couple nights ago. How lucky she was to have such a caring, giving man to keep her warm in that cave…

Vasily didn't seem to notice her darkened gaze as fire licked at her insides. Oh, she couldn't help herself. She was a needy woman. The snow around them, the silence of the early morning forest, it all did little to pull her out of her fantasies. She was painfully aware that it was just the two of them again. Shiraishi and Sugimoto were nowhere to be seen, probably still out searching for that precious “white”.

One of her soft hands touched his on the grip of the rifle. He wasn't wearing his mittens, so she got to feel the warm, rough skin of his fingers. These same fingers that were on her when they-

“Is it loaded?” She asked as a precaution. Brows furrowed, Vasily shook his head with a low grunt.

Her fingers drew apart from his, caressing the magazine and traveling up the forestock of the gun. “Pretty… Not as pretty as your other gun.” Her words confused him. However, the way her hand moved… it gave him a suggestion of what she was talking about. It was terribly… sultry. The idea of what she was hinting at made his heart flutter in an foreign, uncomfortable way.

Her mind searched and searched for something more she could whisper to him in that unfamiliar language. She cursed herself for getting lazy with her Russian, who knew that she'd need it for something as important as him.

She leaned in closer, resting on her palm, ignoring the frosty bite of the ice beneath it. Her hand started moving, slowly pumping up and down the stock of his gun with a ghostly touch, her deep blue eyes pinning him down. “You're a good shot, not just with a rifle, y'know.”

That slow, quiet voice of hers speaking in his tongue, it did things to him. His mind was spinning, eyes fighting between her hand and her beautiful face, and trying not to peek at the collar of her button-up from the new angle.

Vasily huffed, a cute splotch of color coming onto what of his face she could see peeking from underneath his hood. She wasn't sure he even noticed how his own thighs lifted, spreading slightly, giving her more access to his weapon. The blonde purred, stopping her hand where the wood of his gun became metal. She firmly grasped the barrel. He acted like he felt her touch, thighs abruptly clamping shut, eyes unable to look away from her hand now. Her thumb rubbed the smooth cold metal, making its way to his tip. “...I'm not a fan of getting shot by bullets, but I wouldn't mind if you shot me with something else.”

A little giggle left her mouth as she heard the redhead curse, sounding like a garbled mess due to cloth and his ruined jaw. While his eyes were occupied, her face leaned in closer to his neck. She could feel his heat, could practically hear the drumming of his heart.

“You should teach me how to shoot someday, ja? I'd like to get some more practice with you. I'd love to feel it in my own two hands.”

Her hand touched his gun with nothing but affection in every caress. Even as her index finger reached the bottom of the long muzzle, circling it with her fingertip. Her eyes didn't leave his, watching desire and embarrassment and excitement all swirl behind those beautiful bright irises of his. Vasily's finger felt the biting cold of metal burning into his finger, slowly getting oh, so close to losing his damn mind. She decided one last little tease is what she'd give him. Putting on a sickeningly sweet voice that feigned embarrassment. “I do have some practice, but not a lot… Can you show me around, sokrovishche?”

Then there was the sound of a soft, familiar click. Seemed like the sudden sound got Vasily to snap out of his daze, his eyes lowering and focusing on his finger wrapped tight around the trigger of his rifle that was hitting the inside of the guard. Getting to see him so flustered got a laugh out of the woman. She leaned in closer, resting her head against his shoulder. “What do you say, dear? Please? Oh, don't make a girl beg.”

“Franz! Hood! Where the hell are ya’?!”

Siraishi’s voice bounced off the fresh snow, defeat and irritation present in his tone while he and Sugimoto came back to Heita’s hut empty handed.

“Ah, there you two are.” Sugimoto chimed in, watching Vasily practically drag the German woman behind him over a hill, huffing and puffing, face nearly as red as his hair. “What the hell’s gotten into him?”

“I suggested he teach me how to shoot his rifle, and he got so excited!” Franziska beamed. “I guess he’s really eager to show me!”

“I’ll say.” Shiraishi eyed the Russian man pulling Franz away from the group. “Maybe we should go with you-” Sugimoto tried to suggest.

“Oh, that’s okay! Vasil tells me he’s a better teacher when it’s one-on-one” Franziska smiled, showing teeth and closing her eyes. She called out before getting too far– barely fighting the man pulling her away from the rest, “We shouldn’t be gone for too long, I’m sure we’ll be alright on our own!”

Sugimoto waved them off. “Okay, don’t go too far! Hey, and be on the lookout for any bears!”

“And bring back something to eat!”

The blackhead turned, noticing the new, devious look on his friend's face, “Something wrong, Shiraishi?”

“Hmph, just thinking. I think I know that look. Hah! Haha!” Shiraishi skittered away, laughing evilly to himself. “I'd know it all too well…”

“...Is there something happening that I should know?” Sugimoto questioned while following him.

“Heh.” Shiraishi scratched his nose. “Nothing you should worry about. I'm sure Franz and Riding Hood will be okay, and if I'm right, we won't be missing them for too long.”

Q&A corner with Noda Satoru from Shueisha Online

Q: Please tell us about the characters "secrets" that 99.9999% of the readers would be happy to know.

Noda: Sure. When we were creating the official fanbook, we asked people to send in questions, and we received and incredible amount. I read through about 2200 of them, and the most common one was "please tell us the characters' penis size rankings".

"Oh my, how lewd", I thought.

Q: Considering there was only one question per person allowed, why would they waste such a precious chance on such a thing?

Noda: I have no clue. But I gave serious thought to the question regardless, because this is what the readers want to know the most, after all. So, I will announce the most recent penis size ranking:

Ushiyama > Tanigaki > Boutarou > Kiroranke > Kikuta > Ariko > Ienaga > Vasily > Nihei > Lightning Bandit > Tsukishima > Tsurumi

The rest are roughly the same. Sugimoto, Ogata, Usami, Hijikata, Koito are all average-sized. Shiraishi's is a little smaller than average.

Q: In the official fanbook, you named Tanigaki, Ushiyama, Kiroranke and Kikuta as the "four heavenly kings of having big dicks", but it seems that Boutarou has leapt to the top. Ariko Ipopte also looks like he'd be packing... Hmm, very interesting indeed...

Noda: Yes. Boutarou is tall and has long and slender limbs, so naturally he'd also have a long and slender penis. It wasn't simply about the size though, it was more about how good the dick is.

Q: I see. Were there any other question that piqued your interest?

Noda: Alright, using this chance I'll just answer some questions that couldn't make it into the fanbook due to the page limit.

Q: In volume 20, during Koito's kidnapping, why did Ogata, disguised as a Russian, put his hand on Koito's back and leaned in close when the latter was on the phone with his father? Was it because Ogata, who wasn't loved by his father, saw himself in Koito during that moment?

Noda: Exactly. But he also had a huge smile on his face under his mask during that scene.

Q: Share what are your top 3 favorite scenes with Genjirou.

Noda: Chapter 120, where the emotionally unstable Genjirou-chan kept confusing bokke with bokki (boner). 60 points on the cuteness scale.

Chapter 146, where Genjirou-chan's fully stretched dick is rapidly cooled on the ground after he exited the Russian steam bath, banya. 80 points on the cuteness scale.

Chapter 230, where Genjiro-chan is carrying Inkarmat and encouraging her by telling her that everything is going to be okay. 100 points on the cuteness scale.

Chapter 43, where Genjirou-chan is trying to express his gratitude to Huci for helping him after being attacked by Ogata, and ends up crying. 20.000 points on the cuteness scale.

Q: Please tell us of some mundane things about Superior Private Ogata that only the 7th division members know.

Noda: One time Usami pulled his leg; he called Ogata to the training grounds and stood him up. When he got there nobody met up with him, and Ogata ended up waiting alone for a long time.

During the Russo-Japanese war, he didn't notice that an enemy bullet left a small hole in his mess kit, so the rice he put there ended up being dry and hard.

Q: What was the intention behind making Tsurumi a Second Lieutenant instead of a Lieutenant Colonel or something?

Noda: Because he wouldn't have fought personally in the war if he were a Colonel. There's a difference between a superior officer who fights side to side with his underlings, covered in blood, and a superior officer who commands from the rear. It would have had an effect on the attitude of Tsurumi's subordinates towards him.

By the way, intelligence officers received about two ranks higher the amount of pay than regular Second Lieutenants, or so it seems. So he was esteemed as a Colonel anyway.

Q: Ushiyama's modus operandi seems to be just throwing stuff around. How does he feel about ghosts and such, things that wouldn't yield under physical attack?

Noda: He was bad with stuff about ghosts. Sugimoto's shitty ghost stories seemed to scare him.

Part 2

Q: Has Tsukishima kept the letters he got from Igogusa-chan during the Sino-Japanese war?

Noda: He threw all of them away. I decided against them ever meeting again, even on accident. Tsukishima is the best when he can concentrate on his duty. However, given that what he threw away was just too great, I wanted him to give his all to Tsurumi; I wanted him to sacrifice his everything in order to achieve his goals.

Tsurumi's monologue that Tsukishima eavesdropped on was everything that he ever wanted to hear, this is why there was a sparkle in his eyes. I wanted him to enter the last battle at Hakodate full of determination.

Q: At times, when Koito goes on his rants, the text is absolutely illegible, but you can hear what he's saying in the anime. Is it anime original, or do they follow the instructions that you have given them? Will that happen in the future too?

Noda: Of course, the anime staff always asks me what lines they should use there.

Q: In chapter 243, Kikuta commented that Ogata and Hanazawa seemed to have gotten along well. What would the two of them talk about in their time together?

Noda: Yuusaku would talk about exciting daily life occurrences, about things he liked, about delicious things he ate while out in the city, about the weather. All Ogata did was ask questions about their father.

Q: If the cast were students, what school clubs would they be part of?

Noda: Sugimoto would be forward in ice hockey. Shiraishi would be in gymnastics. Asirpa-san would be in middle-distance track and field. Ogata would be center in volleyball. Ushiyama would be in hammer throw, as you could have guessed. Kiroranke would be in basketball. Tsukishima would be defender in soccer, and Koito forward. Kadokura and Kirawus would be in table tennis.

Tanigaki and Boutarou would be on the water polo team, and Tanigaki would get stuck in the pool this one time after Boutarou ripped his pants. Inkarmat, on the concert band, while cheering on him would witness that and be like, "Oh my, look, there's an oboe there!".

Tanigaki would get beet red and hide behind his teammate Ariko while trying to get out of the pool. However Usami from the opposite team would push him back into the water, and before you know it both their dicks are out, and then they’d be like, “Oh, this is so embarrassing”. Morons.

Honestly this ask made me think of more content than I had originally planned, so thanks anon 🥺💖 I personally love it when people give me the space to churn my brain for Golden Kamuy, so please expect more content (in line with February I guess hehe….)

Boutarou the Pirate as a Parent Headcanons

Generally, I think he’d be a good dad! I totally resonate with your idea: it is different to want something than already having it in the palm of your hands. But for Boutarou, I think he’d be a relatively good father because of how long he’s yearned for it and how long he’s planned for it. Again, this is something he’s yearned since his entire family died. He’s had lots of time to really…think about it. He’s passionate about the things he desires, but he’s also…a man that’s grounded with reality. What I mean is, part of his big life goal (maybe even his life purpose at this point) is to have a family: I absolutely see him being logical about things and plan this specific dream out. If he’s willing to do a lot of things for it (aka do crime to achieve this goal), then I’m sure that he’s utterly committed to the idea of having the best family in the entire fucking world. 

Based on his personality, he seems to be a devoted type of man to his dreams; if his dream includes a family, then that means he’s devoted to growing and nurturing that. When Sugimoto and company interacts with him, one can see his passion for life and his dreams, but it’s also veiled behind a calmer visage. I feel like he’d lose the calm exterior and be full on passionate with his trusted partner and his family. He’s absolutely the type to get emotional and even shed a few tears when his partner says that their pregnant/are ready to adopt a new child. 

I feel like he’s a sentimental type underneath that cool exterior. The type of person who would name his children by meaningful names. He’d absolutely name the kids after his lost family (with consent to his partner, of course); it’s his way of connecting his past, present, and future. If his children start to exceed the number of his lost family members, he’d probably ask his partner for name suggestions. He’d be fond of naming them after things that remind him of his partner, his partner’s own family, and himself. 

Very protective, attentive, and responsible of his children! I can see him to be a parent that promotes free thinking and exploration. He’d allow his children to explore and find their way in the world (especially on their island paradise) but with adult supervision. I also see him trying to connect with each child — all of his children are precious to him, of course he’d dedicate time out of his busy schedule as ruler for his family. I feel like his kids would playfully fight for their time with their dad! 

Jumping from the previous point, I think that Boutarou’s the type to still want parental responsibility, on top of being the ruler of their island kingdom. Hence, I can see him making certain daily tasks to be important for family bonding: dinnertime and bedtime for the kids. Boutarou would be home by dinnertime, everyday, no questions asked. He’s happy when he sees his family greet him home and welcome him back: he’s content with washing up for dinner and watching his partner and their brood prepare the meal. Until his kids reach teenage years, he will absolutely tell them stories as a bedtime ritual. They’ll be in one family room where he tells tales of his past (though he changes the name of the “hero”), including the gold hunt. Once story time is over, he’ll kiss each of his children’s foreheads and greet them goodnight as they return to their respective rooms. Boutarou will then shower his beloved partner with love and attention (can’t forget about the wife /gender neutral). 

The kids absolutely love him, and they absolutely hate it when he’s mad at them. Boutarou doesn’t seem to be the type to have a short fuse — he strikes me as someone with a lot of patience. It would take a lot for him to get angry. But his anger doesn’t manifest in shouting or hurtful words, his anger is quiet but somber. Imagine knowing that someone’s angry at you, but they’re not showing it; you just feel the vibe is different, and it makes you absolutely shit yourselves. Yeah, that’s Boutarou. I feel like it really comes out when one of his kids was in danger of seriously harming themselves. He’s still calm and collected when he expresses his anger, but knowing you’ve angered (and disappointed) him makes his family (yes, including his partner) immediately guilty. 

One of the things that makes him angriest is lying. He doesn’t tolerate it with anyone of his subjects, his partner, no less from his kids. He also hates it when his children point fingers at each other when it comes to blaming for an accident or mistake (they learn early on not to do it). I think Boutarou’s scary aura when he’s mad goes full-blown when it comes to lying and pointing the blame. Aside from that, he’s a good parent and he tries modeling good and morally upright behavior to his children — his days of being a convict and a “bad man” are long over. Each day spent with his family and island washes away the years of loneliness and bloodshed. Yes, he’s absolutely committed to protecting his dream with his life.

Just got done with Season 2 of Golden Kamuy.

I absolutely adore Sugimoto and Asirpa relationship.

I really love how Sugimoto meets Asirpa and basically adopts her like his little sister/daughter.

Their relationship is so precious and funny.

They actually act like a real  siblings, and are will going hell and back for each other.

Sugimoto in away reminds of Rick  Grimes from the walking dead.

How both those 2 will do whatever it takes protect their loved ones.

Plus how Sugimoto is a very well written character.

He is very believable, really  portrays a soldier with PTSD very well.

He’s a very very believable character, and I really do love the Way he’s portrayed he’s a guy who’s seen and done some crazy, but at some time he’s also loving and cars about Asirpa and other people.

He can be silly and big goofball, but at sometime will shows how he’s dealing with The trauma that he is dealing with, and how human it really makes him.

Like Tsunami Sugimoto is absolutely written so well, I am floored on how well written the characters are.

Honestly this anime is so good. It is so good and really if you not Golden Kamuy I highly recommend it.

Fantastic writing, well developed characters and the anime is very good.

lately my brain has been cobbling together the most random crossovers imaginable

Like “you know who would apreciate Sabo in all his deranged revolutionary glory? Zabuza. Zabuza would apreciate a feral bastard with a thing for hitting government officials with a steel pipe”

But the wildest crossover that came to me due to a series of unforeseen events* was Golden Kamuy/Kimetsu no Yaiba and like,,, it was weirdly appealing? The thought of Tanjiro walking around the 7th and being absolutely nauseated by the smell of lies and treachery, all centered on Tsurumi. He would be instantly disgusted by him and the thought of that was great. Because as much as he is a nice boy he has a very strong sense of duty and justice and Tsurumi shits on those principles on a daily basis. I’m pretty sure Tanjiro would consider killing him (I mean, come on, the boy threw an axe at Giyu’s head the momment he realized mercy wasn’t an option, he’s not squeamish, never was. And Tsurumi has ruined many people’s lives, twisted their hearts to fit his goals. Tanjiro would hate him).

And like, the thought of the group who goes to Abashiri finding this precious child in the middle of the woods. A kind, dutiful, responsible kid that remained good after suffering such terrible loss. Sugimoto would be all over that shit. Doing his best to make sure no further suffering comes over him, turning into a mushy pile of feelings when he’s thanked for his efforts. And as good as Tanjiro is, as pure and innocent as people perceive him to be, he isn’t easily impresed by blood and injury. He can get angry or sad at what it means (people dying and suffering) but he’s no longer impressed by the carnage itself. Sugimoto justifiably losing his shit? Probably wouldn’t rattle him all that much, Tanjiro understands wanting to protect someone at all costs. I can imagine him in the aftermath, being worried about Sugimoto’s feelings rather than his violence.

He’d become Shiraishi’s new patron saint, what with being praised/thanked every time he does something right or helpful, and not being made fun of for being stupid or scared or hurt.

And Ogata, jesus fuck. This asshole bastard man who’s main problem is that he can’t understand his own emotions meeting the dude who can smell feelings. Who also has a tendency to validate those feelings. Tanjiro would feel for Ogata’s guilt and his loneliness, even while being perfectly aware that they’re being lied to. But even so, Ogata is helpful, in the meantime, and he has a politeness about him (unless you are Sugimoto). Even if he’s distant, he tends to be quiet and not unnecesarily rude unless he’s being purposefully antagonizing. And Tanjiro can’t be antagonized, as Inosuke discovered, so i think they could get along. And Tanjiro would break Ogata’s brain. Because he wants kind people to tarnish, to prove that they’re not so different from him, but Tanjiro is kind while able to kill, and even kind to those he kills. And he’d show Ogata honest kindness and respect that isn’t naive. Asirpa is kind to him only while she thinks he’s more or less good. Tanjiro could smell the blood and the lies and the resentment and still respect him no problem, without expecting anything in return. (and even if he thinks he has to kill the sunshine child to get rid of the complicated emotions he gets from it, he’d still be pretty much aware that Tanjiro is also esentially a mutant that can probably dodge bullets. So it’s most likely not worth the effort to try)

"Why did Tsurumi say he knew about the gold if then he said he'll forget about it?". Easy. He needs to use the fact that he'll renounce to it as a bargaining chip to convince Sugimoto to desist. He can't use it if he doesn't say he knows about it. Also, because he needa to convince Sugimoto, he doesn't need to be honest on the fact he couldn't recover it. As a secondary objectibe he' stalling and messing with Sugimoto's head while he gets the gun. I think you're overanalyzing it.

For start yes, it’s pretty clear he’s stalling Sugimoto and doesn’t plan to have a deal with him. He didn’t really need to stall Sugimoto as, once he removed the bolt he could have gone for the gun and shoot him before the latter were to toss away the rifle and pull out the sword. This would have caught Sugimoto on surprise and would have given Tsurumi the time to shoot while Sugimoto was still disarmed.

But whatever, it’s a manga, I get they want to stall things for narrative purpose and, from a Doylist point of view, this is meant to show to us readers that Tsurumi didn’t completely fall for Nagakura’s lie there was no gold.

There’s a point to this decision that’s based on how this is a story so this is not a complain.

Sadly the gold can’t be used by Tsurumi as a bargaining chip as you suggested, the whole point of a bargaining chip is it has to be a concession in exchange of something else.

Tsurumi however claims he’ll give up on the gold BECAUSE HE CAN’T RETRIEVE IT since Central is pursuing him and he would have no time to bring it with him.

For his own admission he’s not conceding anything, he claims he just can’t retrieve the gold.

Sugimoto and Co though, fled from Goryokaku because it was filled with Tsurumi’s men. They’re clearly not prone to believe that, should they jump off the train, the chased Tsurumi will just go back and waste precious time to send his men away before escaping so that they can go get the gold.

Long story short Tsurumi asked merely because, as he said in chap 309, there still was a thing he wanted to confirm, which is clearly if the gold was there or not. To get such confirmation he’s even trying to get Asirpa angry by saying if she denies the existence of the gold it would mean his father was trying to get the Ainu to fight by tricking them.

He has a Doylist reason for his words (informing us readers he doesn’t believe the gold doesn’t exist) and a Watsonian one (he wants to satisfy his own curiosity).

What he says afterward also has the Doylist purpose to show the readers how Sugimoto resists to temptation which, hey, is a good thing.

However in the process though, Tsurumi makes his whole speech a lot less believable.

Sure, if he only wanted to gain time (which he really didn’t need because, as I said, he could have shoot Sugimoto earlier and the whole ‘gaining time’ is merely for us readers’ benefit) whatever goes, he could have told them the tragic story of his life to stall them or make up how the aliens are taking over Hokkaido or everything.

A key point of Tsurumi though, was that he was a good liar and manipulator. Here he’s overall not impressive.

In fact I fear you’re missing the point of my statement. I wasn’t really in need to know why Tsurumi was doing it, my question was a rhetorical one to point out the way he’s doing it isn’t a particularly bright lie.

okay seriously why is golden kamuy so perfect at taking big burly men who have killed people and making them completely adorable???

I know the serious answer is that this series is pro-veteran and war-critical, and a lot of the focus is on how these men reconcile with themselves after the war is over... but that's not what I'm on about today.

I just... I mean like!!! they're so cute. Sugimoto is so sweet, like when he found that bear cub? or when he was lookin at little flowers with Shiraishi? wtf how is he so cute. Tanigaki is adorable, he's soft spoken and earnest, he's honestly the most precious thing. when he cried because he didn't want to let the girls at the circus down... god, he's the absolute best. Tsukishima being so patient as he deals with sooooo much wacky bullshit all the time, even though you know he's annoyed by it all, and then the way that he cares in the case of stuff like Svetlana... and oh my god, Koito. Koito is the exact right combination of weird traits, I love him. he's hyper competent, expertly trained, in peak condition, but he's also a total weirdo about Tsurumi, he can be completely self absorbed, and all it takes is one cute animal to distract him completely. he's perfect.

I could go on and on... I even love their kind of childish bratty behavior, like any of the pettiness between Sugimoto and Koito, or the way Sugimoto and Asirpa tease each other sometimes. so cute. I'm glad the series has this nice balance between serious/badass/cool stuff, vs. all this sweet stuff, I think that's what makes it work, no other series I've seen does it quite like this. it's spoiled me.

For better or for worse, so hard to say — in a complicated environment like that, where the observer's nature was open to discussions about morality and decency, being solemnly ignored was a good deal most of the time. The nail that sticks out gets hammered, as they say, and Reimi didn't need any more blows to learn her place. Days passed like this, always so dangerously the same, forming a misshapen mass that answered for the name of weeks, months, years. Every now and then her name came up, a presence considered more of an asset than a nuisance, and their lord would lavish her with a task of some sort. It wasn't much, especially when compared to most people around, able to give him what he wanted quickly, efficiently. Even the most subtle approval was all she has been secretly craving all along! Not everyone was made to fight on the front lines, but anyone could earn a place in the sun. That said, she accepted the mission with a sparkle of delight in her eyes (refusing wasn't an option anyway), but knowing she wouldn't be all alone made conflicting feelings blossom in her ever-aching heart. Once in a while something or someone caught her eye fleetingly, reminding her reasonably numb mind of the invigorating sensation that a breath of fresh air brought...

ㅤ ㅤHer summer breeze this time had a name whispered through the corridors with some frequency, a face she was unfamiliar with. Mariah wasn't among her constant companions — but since she didn't have anyone who could receive that title in the first place, things got hopeless. Noda: It's in her bag as well.

Q3: I love the mix of the serious and the humorous in Golden Kamuy. Does the humor come out naturally as you draw? Do you enjoy comedy?

Noda: When there's a stranded serious atmosphere I just feel like destroying it. (crotch shines)

Kobayashi Chikahiro (Sugimoto Saichi)

Q1: If you were to voice someone in the series, whom would you choose?

Noda: Henmi Kazuo.

Q2: Is there a reason to why Sugimoto won't take off his cap even when going into the ocean or an onsen?

Noda: I just thought that keeping the cap on while naked is sexy.

Q3: What was the most impactful thing that you encountered while doing research?

Noda: I talked about deer hunting here and there before so I'll leave it out, other than that, encountering a bear and its cub at Daisetsuzan and being chased by a group of stray dogs in Sakhalin. There are stray dogs the size of German shepherds in there. I got to do a lot during my research and gained many good experiences.

Nakata Jouji (Hijikata Toshizou)

Q1: Do you already know how you're going to end the story?

Noda: I know how I want to end it, and there's not that much left. I want the landing to be akin to one of a gymnastics gold medalist, but I refuse to rush through things and make it ugly just to reach the conclusion, out of both pride as a professional mangaka and responsibility towards my readers.

Q2: Even the villains have their dedicated spotlight and are overflowing with charm. What makes a villain attractive in your eyes?

Noda: Doing their best. No matter how repulsive their deeds, as long as they're showing earnest dedication, I just want to aid them. However, when it comes to ethics, every reader has their own boundaries, so it's hard to know where to stop. I'm sure a lot of readers think that I've already crossed the line.

Itou Kentarou (Shiraishi Yoshitake)

Q: I think there's a lot of other characters who, like Shiraishi, were based off someone. There's a Nihei in both your previous work, Supinamarada!, and this one. Is he based off someone too? Is it possible that they are blood related?

Noda: There's a lot of factors to it, but Nihei's philosophy of the winner being decided in one shot was taken from a real life high school hockey team supervisor who is said to be a big deal. What he meant by that is that there is one decisive moment during a match, and if you play thinking of second chances you're going to miss it. Isn't it mesmerizing? I was told by staff from that school that Nihei looks exactly like that supervisor. It wasn't my intention at all, how curious. And yes, I think the two Niheis are blood related.

Ootsuka Houchuu (Tsurumi Tokushirou)

Q: Tsurumi is so unique and enigmatic, I became a big fan of him upon acting as him. I'm very interested what historical or movie figures served as his models.

Noda: I made the resemblance to Hannibal Lecter and Gary Oldman's character from Leon quite deliberate. There's also Hitler's mannerisms, I used it for misleading, but they're there. I've also been channeling Hans Landa from Inglourious Basterds through him. Tsurumi is supposed to be this elegant, intellectual kind of freak. Like Gomez Addams. 

Nomura Kenji (Ushiyama Tatsuma)

Q1: Ushiyama seems to have been dragged into the race of gold for the gold itself, but does he have any other goals? Or does he act on instinct? Don't tell me... He's only in there for the women...

Noda: Maybe it will become clear later. I wouldn't call Ushiyama particularly calculating, though. Maybe he really is in only for the women, after all.

Q2: I'm curious about Ushiyama's personality. He doesn't seem to be doubting the people around him much. Does he judge others going by intuition?

Noda: He is very strong, so he assumes that he can just kill the ones who betray him whenever he wants. I think that the stronger someone is, the more lenient. He can get along just fine with someone and then just instantly strike them down if they cross the line, scary guy.

Tsuda Kenjirou (Ogata Hyakunosuke)

Q: Golden Kamuy is a crazy story full of crazy characters. Do you ever happen to think, "wow, that's not okay" about yourself? Or got told this by anyone?

Noda: When I was in Sakhalin, a Nivkh family took me in and let me have a few traditional dishes. There was a high school girl in that family. She seemed to be into Japanese anime, and asked us what work we're researching for. So I kindly told her that it's One Piece. She got so excited. Like, frothing at the mouth level excited. "One Piece really is something, huh", I thought to myself.

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)

Caught in Japan mute and technically deaf, since people speaking Russian are a quite rare finding in Hokkaido, Vasily is limited in his expression of affection. Obviously, first thing that comes to mind is communication though his amazing drawings but they are static and, therefore, lacking small details that are so important in dialogue. So he pays much more attention to non-verbal part of communication (probably unknowingly) to win a person.

He tries to sit by their side, not opposing but not siding, just right to attract attention. When “talking” to them, Vasily’s eyes become hundred times more expressive: he raises eyebrows in shock, frowns to show misunderstanding or anger, bulges eyes in surprise, squints eyes in disbelief. He has no idea what they are saying unless they draw responses as well. In all other cases Vasily trusts his guts, their general looks, and tone of the voice.

Speaking of drawings. We all can agree Vasily secretly draws them and hides pictures everywhere. He always keeps one, the best one in his opinion, close to the heart. Sugimoto found one of portraits and Vasily waved his arms so hard that he almost took off, but Saichi just smiled and promised to take his secret to the grave. Vasily will definitely show his creations to them when the time comes.

Physical affection. It is so hard. He needs a lot of clues to avoid awkward situations. No hugs, no big skin-to-skin contact unless he is at least 50% sure in their consent. Such low percentage because how much can you tell in situation like his? Vasily loves to be close to them and gets overly excited when they initiate holding hands even if it’s only for a few seconds.

B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)

He is such an unpredictable friend to be honest. You never know what to expect. Today he disappears into thin air just to fall on your head tomorrow with a weird-looking kettle. It’s a new shiny samovar! Now you can drink real tea!

Vasily will follow you anywhere. Just call him, and you will have the best travel companion in the whole world. During the trip, he collects various trinkets and wraps them into his sketches. He drags you to the most crowded places where all fun takes place. Let’s skip the fact that “fun” is not always safe.

Before Vasily met Ogata, he loved to sing in a company. His bass-baritone was a gem of any gatherings and worked on girls like a charm. Now Vasya can’t say a word but you can catch him humming unfamiliar melodies from time to time. If his friend joins in singing, Vasily will clap hands in admiration.

The best around to get drunk with. His self-control is commendable since Vasily knows exact amount of alcohol he can take. He is in charge of bringing everybody back to camp if they decide to take a walk and slapping their hands when they reach for another glass. Not a mother type. His control extends only to drinking.

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

Classical big spoon and won’t let them be one if they are smaller than him. Vasily likes to cuddle but short cuddling annoys the hell out of him so his ideal cuddle session has to last at least half of hour without any interruptions. He also likes when partner lies on his chest. This position gives Vasya chance to slowly rub their back, ruffle their hair or play with it.

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)

He… never thought about it? Despite widespread Slavic tradition of having large family and house in which sound of children’s stomping never dies down, Vasily never discussed settling down or getting married with anyone. It is not like he is not capable of living sedentary way of life, it just wasn’t relevant. Vasily needs someone to push him towards changing his lifestyle if they want to settle down in a future.

E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)

Unlike the others, Vasily can’t explain himself and simply say “well, it won’t work out, let’s stay friends”. So he gives up trying. There are only two options:

In first Vasily slowly distances himself from them, growing abyss gets increasingly noticeable every next day. In the beginning, he ignores them loudly calling his name in the woods. Then he stops to turn around to their voice, he looks away just not to look them right in the eyes. The more assertive person is, the more they resist his cold treatment, the harsher Vasily becomes.

In second Vasily abruptly leaves country and goes back to Russian Empire. No notice. Nothing. The only reminder of his existence is a trail of shallow footprints in the snow and one or two drawing he did not manage to burn.

F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)

Once again, he haven’t thought about it at all. If his loved one brought up a marriage, Vasily would need to have a mental sit down. There is a ton of responsibilities hidden under the marriage concept, it makes ephemeral bond between two dryly official, but Vasily, will marry them if it will make them happier. He is ready to pop a question after two years, and only after another person shows their interest in it.

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

Stoic and collected in a professional sense but sincere and rough-ly gentle in everyday life. Turgenev, a Russian novelist, wrote that a real Russian has a heart of a child, and Vasily surely falls into this category: behind the image of a cold-blooded sniper hides a personality prone to vivid sensual experiences. He holds loved one like the most precious thing in the world and cares for them deeply.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

Loves hugs with all his heart. After long time apart Vasily will squeeze them in a bear hug, leaving their legs hanging freely in the air. During the day Vasily likes to randomly come up from behind and place hands on their waist or thighs, while resting his chin on their shoulder or head. If his partner is teeny-tiny he can’t resist the urge to place them between his legs, their back to his chest, and press them closer, hiding them in his big ass coat.

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)

After good interpreter magically appears on the horizon? In any case, if he tries to do it without someone who understands Russian, you’ll get funny pantomime accompanied by sighs in different keys. He will write “Я люблю тебя” under another portrait just to get upset that nobody understands him.

It depends not on the time spent together but on events that they lived through, so it may take from one month to few years. By the time Vasily feels like saying “I love you” they probably realize it by his amorous behavior.

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

Patient jealous type. But before we get to it, let’s say few people will take a risk and flirt with a partner of such a mysterious stranger. He carries a riffle, which means he shoots living creatures. Nobody wants to get shot, okay. One can hit on his partner and pray nobody points to it. When it happens, Vasily takes a silent stand behind his loved one and just stares at love rival until they go away. If it doesn’t help, Vasya may flip and take person to the ground with one hard blow. He keeps poker face the whole time.

His partner is flirting with someone? Gets touchy and lovey-dovey? After long  monitoring and accepting an unpleasant fact, Vasily bounces back and forth between the stages of denial and anger. Next days he shoos them away with a hand gesture and tortures himself, overthinking if it really was what he thought it was. Puppy eyes and gentle pats are usually enough to calm him down.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

In the beginning Vasily dodges kisses like Neo does bullets. Very unobtrusively all attempts to kiss him come to naught, he rises hand in stop sign or turns around, tightening bashlyk in hurry. Not that he doesn’t want to, he is just afraid. No, not that they will gasp in fright or find scars on his cheeks ugly. He is afraid of pain. Thought of someone touching his face sends unpleasant tingle down to the jaw. Given the physiological position of the tongue and teeth, you can imagine what that bullet… well, better not.

Later Vasily relaxes enough to let them kiss him in the forehead. In return he nuzzles in their hair or neck or anywhere they allow to. As long as they are satisfied with such a surrogate, he is chill and forgets about his deformation.

One day Vasily surrenders to their wishes and lets them unwrap bashlyk like a birthday present. He closes eyes in praying for gentle touch. After realizing the light touch on the lips does not cause pain Vasya develops much more positive attitude towards kissing. Now he kisses them himself, hooray. On the nose, one the cheeks, on the lips. No tongue tho. He prefers to do it in private, far from prying eyes.

L = Little ones (How are they around children?)

For some vague reason kids seem to really like him? They love his silence and smiling eyes (Tyra Banks is proud of you, sweetie) just as much as his willingness to play with them. Vasily sees no problem to run around enjoying games that have Russian equivalent: kakurenbo/hide and seek similar to “прятки” and janken/rock paper scissors is identical to “камень, ножницы, бумага”. Moreover Vasily’s physical states are impressive: he throws kids in the air and catches them like it’s nothing, spins them around until he gets dizzy, etc. Feels more comfortable to play with little kids and toddlers than teenagers.

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)

Immediately after waking up, Vasily gets up and thoroughly stretches. Usually his partner is still asleep so he has some time to do some housework. In summer and spring, Vasya grabs a scythe and mows overgrown weeds near the house, in fall he cuts firewood for the next season, and in winter you can catch him by the window, looking at endless white fields where he doesn’t have anything to do! After morning routine is over, he greats now woken up partner with a temple kiss and together they decide what to cook for breakfast.

N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)

Likes to enjoy privacy of his home. After the list of useful (and not so useful) things has been done, Vasily wants to bury his face in the partner’s neck and relax. He is all about tea party with fresh baked buttered buns, inept massage, cuddling with fingers intertwined. If night out occurs, it is a casual walk around the city/village with a purpose of catching hot news and exchanging niceties.

O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)

Vasily has his soul wide open and is ready to tell his partner about the past, family, friends, traditions, and many-many other things, but does he really have an opportunity? During the journey, Vasya tries to get around the inability to speak by drawing and pointing to somehow related items but it rarely makes any sense. In general, he does not dump everything at once so he can back to topic and start conversation from where they left it.

P = Patience (How easily angered are they?)

He has a good understanding that cool head is a main tool in problem solving. You can annoy Vasily as much as you like, he will just shrug his shoulders and shake his head because there’s no point in responding aggressively. In the event of a serious incident (category includes betrayal, treason, encroachment on something important to him) Vasily will hold strong emotions back anyway. It is not that he doesn’t want to tear wrongdoer to pieces, no. He will do it, directing all the destructive power of hatred into action itself.

Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?)

Great memory, especially visual memory that helps him to find way back to camp or hotel without asking for anyone’s help. Vasily’s watchfulness plays a big role in interaction with others, especially with loved one. Did their gaze linger on a certain stuff? Was it flower? Weapon? Some sort of food? What was their facial expression? He picks up whether they press received present to the chest or try to hide it as soon as possible. Vasily may surprise loved one with a gift that they were staring in the shop but didn’t buy even after few months pass.  

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)

The time is far past midnight. Heavy clouds cover the sky over the river valley, and the only source of light are anvil crawlers, sprawled between bare branches of oaks and beeches. Vasily is wide awake. Rolling thunder has nothing to do with it. He is too concentrated on a person quietly snuffling on his chest. They are so close. He is so happy. He feels… important? Special? Lucky? When they wanted snuggle up to someone in seek of protection, they went to Vasily. Not to Sugimoto whose yell fills people with a primal fear. Not to Shiraishi whose dumb jokes can distract from looming threat. To him. Vasily keeps wondering how his loud heartbeat didn’t wake them up. He can’t wait for a morning to plant a dozen kisses on their cute sleepy face.

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)

It completely depends on another person’s self-defense skills. If they can take care of themselves, Vasily won’t worry much. They are not a child to have someone watching their every step. If they are less skilled, then he will keep an eye on them. One dirty look is enough for Vasily to become alert and sneak closer to the partner. He will try to avoid a direct confrontation but if it is impossible Vasily will aim for a head.

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?)

The very presence of Vasily in another country is an endless trying so he is used to give his best. Most of Vasya's time is spent on picking social clues and particular interaction qualities between Japanese people, comparison with those in his own culture, and application of synthesized results in his own relationship. For example, if there’s a chance Vasily would buy them the sweetest marshmallow from famous Abrikosov confectionery concern, but following Japanese tradition he would… well, he’ll stick to Russian presents until he spends enough time in Japan. Doesn’t care about anniversaries so do not expect extra effort.  

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)

It can be difficult for a serious person to be with Vasily because of his childish behavior. Yes, it's fun to fool around with the person from outside that is in such a sad position that he has no other choice but to laugh. Only at some point will it seem stupid and unreasonable.

Still, in the Slavic countries, a man has always been considered the leader of the relationship and his opinion was put above all others. Sometimes Vasily tries to change his partner and impose his vision of the world on them. He doesn't look like an strictly uncompromising individual but Vasily may have a little bit of this in him.

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

Comfort and warmth are the main criteria for Vasily when choosing clothes. In addition, face protection is important to him as well because a good soldier knows how to cover his weaknesses and leave opponents without any benefits. Vasily values his sideburns and takes a good care of them himself. In addition, he is aware his blue eyes are hypnotic secret weapon of Russian Empire and they are another thing he really likes in own appearance.

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

Crossing the border illegally, he didn’t expect to make friends in the first place, leave alone jumping into romantic relationship. Ending up cuffed instead of having a little fun as a side mission in spontaneous sniper hunt surely leaves him attached. Attachment leads to hurt. If they decide to end the relationship Vasily’s feelings are crushed. You can catch the moment of realization: his shoulders drop and eyebrows rise in surprise as he takes step back. That’s okay. Vasily doesn’t hold grudges. His behavior remains positive despite being hurt.

If they were killed, Vasily will cross the whole damn country to find the culprit. He will search every corner, turn every stone to make them pay. Only then Vasily will allow himself to mourn properly, pray for them. After returning back home, he will light a candle in their memory during each church visit.

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)

Vasily is far from “innocent” persona people try to picture him. His disability and unfamiliar environment gave him a great disguise but Vasily is sniper, he is deadly. Given his size and physique, Vasya, probably, can suffocate person with single hand, and squeaky sound of leather gloves friction sends goosebumps down his spine.

Corporal punishment was allowed up until 1904 both in army and navy of Russian Empire. I can see Vasily as someone who got into minor troubles but was disliked by his mentors so he got a bit of whipping, flogging, maybe, even running the gauntlet. His back is covered in merely visible thin white and pink lines.

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)

Controlling partner is a big no-no. There are people that tolerate their loved one directing everything, gently pushing towards favored decisions, but Vasily isn’t one of them. It irritates him to the point where Vasya crosses his hands on the chest and throws a mum fit.

Vasily is a smart man, Vasily knows that good things take time. That’s why he can’t imagine himself with an impatient person by his side. In addition, you’ll need patience to deal with his forced silence that prevents intelligible communication.

Pretence. Mostly because Vasily can’t get why would you fake something? It doesn’t make you successful person, it just make you a liar.

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habit of theirs?)

Doesn’t care where to sleep while it’s still dark. As soon as the first sunbeam hits his face, Vasily quickly jumps on his feet and gets to work. Same goes for any other light source like candle, lamp, torch. Prefers to doze with rifle by his side so that in the case of danger he could easily protect himself and others. Also Vasily sleeps exclusively on his back to minimize face contact with hard surfaces.

The thought of his homeland makes Vasily's heart ache, mostly because he misses sleeping on the Russian stove (remember “печка”?). There’s nothing even close to the heat it radiates. He just wants to curl on the stove and eat fresh kalaches.

Sleep quality is inversely proportional to the presence of dreams. It is easy to understand that Vasily had one: his face expresses complete detachment, and in his eyes you can see immeasurable sadness.

First impression: sexy sexy sexy man who's so hot and cute i was literally "sugimoto... 😍😍😍😍" after every single chapter. he also seemed to me like a kind of superhuman, legendary guy at first, the type of man who's incredibly lucky and capable, but chapter 6 made me realize he's much more human and vulnerable than he was made out to be at first, so i started caring abt him very early on.

Impression now: he needs a break and therapy and tons of love and fuck im sooo worried abt him. hes one of my fave gk characters right after shira koito and tsukishima, and he makes me so sad all the time like i just want him to be silly with shira and asirpa again :( at this point im not even sure how things will turn out for him, he seems way too close to giving up on himself and his own salvation entirely and its scary.

Favorite moment: sugi and shira's reunion in karafuto :) i love them so much and this moment always brings a smile to my face

Idea for a story: he lives a quiet and peaceful life with shiraishi and asirpa. thats it

Unpopular opinion: idk man, maybe that his relationship with ogata is way less important and developed in the story than some fans make it out to be... ppl get really weird abt them. he never liked the guy anyways

Favorite relationship: his relationship with shira!!!! theyre hilarious and their relationship is SO important to both of their characters they make me lose it. shiraishi being the first close friend sugi has in years, the one person he can consistently rely on in this crazy and brutal journey- and we know how hard it is for sugi to trust anyone, but shiraishi is still there for him, and it took a lot to build the bond they have now but they still managed to get there and stay together. sugi is just so much more calm and easygoing around him, and shiraishi manages to balance his short temper. it's really funny to think that if it had been up to them in the beginning they wouldve never seen each other again after their first encounter, but now their friendship is one of the most precious things they found in this gold hunt.

Favorite headcanon: i cant think of anything else rn but... you ever think abt the fact the girl sugi ended up taking care of during the manga is an orphan who lost her father just a few years ago... so what if she reminded him of his best friend's child, the kid who lost his father in the war. it's the first time he gets to see the perspective of a young child living with the loss of her father, and that's exactly the kind of life toraji's son is going to live- life without a father, where there's always this emptiness within the family. and the kid is so young he probably wont remember sugimoto's best friend as well as he does. sugi could barely bring himself to stand in front of ume after the war so im sure he didnt meet with toraji's son either, so what if his time with asirpa made the loss toraji's family experienced because he couldn't protect his best friend just that more real and painful... and it kills him, it really does.

You were calling out to him while he was carrying some long, thick pieces of lumber to contribute to the fire when he turned around, the sticks slammed right into your face causing you to have splinters painfully peppered throughout your facial features, some even getting in your eye.

Plus the lumber hit you pretty hard so you had a minor concussion which means dizziness and headaches

Your pouty look after the doctor’s visit makes him cry more and beg for forgiveness... He’s even brought your favorite snacks but it all goes ignored by you till he tackles you and curls around you like a giant man-child croissant

He compliments your eyepatch since your vision got damaged and needs time to heal and even gets a matching eyepatch that he doesn’t even need

Every 5 seconds he starts sobbing about how sorry he is and how you’re hurt because of him

he goes into overprotective mode and doesn’t let anyone see you because you’re resting... Even if you’re feeling a lot better he still doesn’t let anyone see you

it’s probably because only he has your attention while you’re injured and obligated to stay at home- what a selfish mans
