Reverse robins idea. Jason doesnt become a Robin. The bats dont even find him before the cat herself. Selena is still on and off with Bruce at this point. Damian as noticed the little kitten running around and decides the kitten need a more responsible adult than his father and the cat. Cue thugs being terrified of the shadow that follows the little kitten around.
Thank you for this adorable prompt <3 Sorry it took me so long to finish.
“Uh. Dami? What’re you doing?”
Those were—a lot of throwing knives. Like, actual knives, not Bat-themed at all.
Damian didn’t look up. “Sharpening my weapons.”
They looked plenty sharp to Dick, but Damian was a fussy old maid like his father. Their father. He was still getting used to that one.
“You’re supposed to be in Metropolis,” Dick pointed out.
Damian scowled. Dick didn’t take it personally. He liked his oldest brother. Dami glared a lot and yelled at Bruce when he was mean, and he never told Dick that he should stop seeking revenge for what happened to his parents. “Change of plans.”
“Can I come?”
“You’re heading out with Father tonight,” Damian pointed out. “And anyway, no.”
“What’re you doing? Is it a date?” Full disclosure: Dick wasn’t entirely sure what a ‘date’ was. He just knew that everyone blushed when he asked the question and that Bruce, according to Alfred, never got any.
Damian, however, just shook his head. “No. It’s a mission.”
Dick tilted his head to the side. “I don’t believe you.”
“That does not matter. It is the truth either way.”
Bullshit. Damian was sharpening his weapons, okay, but there was no mission for him in Gotham tonight. Bruce had told Dick so when he mentioned that all that would be happening tonight was a Catwoman heist, so he would pick Dick up after.
(Dick had a sneaking suspicion that for Bruce, ‘heist’ and ‘date’ meant the same thing.)
Nooo, Damian was up to something. Something important—or embarrassing—enough that he would lie to his cute little brother about it.
Just wait until he told Babs about this! She was always going on about “Steph did this” and “Cass did that,” and now, finally, Dick had a juicy mystery to distract her. Hehe. This was going to be fun.
Selina would never understand Bats. If you’d asked her twenty years ago if she could see Bruce adopting a gaggle of orphans, she’d have laughed but agreed—if the kids were all alone in the world or in a situation that reminded Bruce of his own.
Like, the first kid—okay. That was his son. From the daughter of an immortal cult leader, Selina later found. Weird enough. Then the second just showed up because… the city needed him? And he was right? And then another assassin kid, this time a daughter.
Really, only Dick fitted the pattern she’s envisioned for Bruce. Which was ironic, because, by that time, she’d taken in her own boy (the first after two Catgirls), who fit the pattern much better.
Of course, their child-rearing methods showed some marked differences. Selina thought it was for the better, really. Jay needed to be trusted, given responsibility, to determine his own fate. She let him run his own missions, treated him as an almost-equal when they went out together, didn’t comment on how he sometimes didn’t seem focused on the target so much as on the corrupt people owning it. Jay was thriving.
When his shadow showed up, Selina had expected him to be angry, the way he was whenever B mentioned a concept like ‘bedtime’ or Selina tried to protect him. But he’d lit up like there was nothing more comforting than a six-foot-four shadow following you around, glaring at criminals and innocents alike.
Selina, in her heart of hearts, did not like Damian. She didn’t fault him for his flaws, but it was hard to like someone who called you a harlot under his breath a million times.
Jay, though, adored him. Like, hung-onto-his-few-words, begged-to-buy-a-sword adored him. They even went out on patrol together sometimes. So Selina… let them. Taught Jay more restraining holds and knock-out moves than she had the others because he was a gifted thief already, but that was clearly not all that would be on his path.
And, hey. Usually, she and Bruce had to put their… thing on hold when they were responsible for pre-teens. If these ones took care of themselves, she wasn’t going to complain.
“Dames,” Jon greeted him cheerfully, “what’re you up to? Gonna join me tonight?”
“I can’t.”
At twenty-seven, Jon was way too old to pout. He still did. “Aww, why not? Important mission?”
“Not precisely.” There was shuffling on the other end of the line. “I… Catwoman is planning a two-person heist tonight. Batman has intentions of preventing it.”
Jon instantly forgave him. He looooved seeing this side of his partner. Damian rarely let himself be openly soft about anyone but his family, pets, and team, and even that was kept incredibly guarded.
(He often considered that Damian would have benefited from being a younger sibling. Being the first to come live with Bruce had been a steep learning curve for the man. Too steep.)
Didn’t mean Jon wouldn’t tease Damian about it. “So two adults are not supervision enough for the kid?”
“You know it isn’t,” Damian growled. “Father and that woman might do a passable job separately, but not together.”
“What, are they fucking again?”
“Jon!”
Jon laughed. “C’mon, you caught them often enough to know it’s happening.”
“I’m not listening.” Damian immediately proved himself a liar by adding: “This is a dangerous area. They should know better.”
“Good thing you’re there, then.”
“I am sorry, though.” Damian’s voice softened. Jon once again marveled at how far he’d come. The teenager he’d befriended back then would never have such a thing. “Rain check?”
“I could join you, instead,” he offered, just to hear Damian sputter: “What—no! Your colors are visible a mile away!”
“Awww, don’t be like that!”
He decided then and there to keep an ear out for the kid when Damian wasn’t there. Just in case Jason wanted to sneak away to find his birth mother in a foreign country or some other stupid dramatic Gotham shit.
After hearing what had happened to Damian years ago, Jon had already made it his mission to protect the Robins, whether they wanted it or not. There wouldn’t be any more dead ones on his watch. It wouldn’t hurt to add a kitten to the list.
Jason had it handled. Really, he had. One of the goons had just taken a bit longer to go down, that was all. The knife had been totally unnecessary.
It took him another three minutes to do anything about that—two of the security guards were still standing, and they were pissed. Jason pushed one down the hallway, choked the other, and then clocked the first so hard he went down.
Then he turned around and searched for the darkest shadow. “I had that.”
Nothing moved.
“…it was a pretty good throw.” Maybe Jason should rethink his stance on throwing sharp shit at people, after all. He still maintained that a gun would be cleaner and more straightforward. Maybe Selina (and Damian) were right though about the value of silence. Their fight hadn’t alerted anyone.
At that, the thrower finally emerged from the shadows, cape dramatically outlining his figure. Jason rolled his eyes. What was it with Bats and dramatic costumes? Selina had made him swear that no matter how much he hung out with them, he wouldn’t ever wear one of the stupid things, and that was one promise that had been very easy to give.
“I have an observational task at the Bowery in two hours and could benefit from a second pair of eyes,” Damian said stiffly. “And your knowledge of the area, of course.”
Oh, awesome. Jason loved working in his old neighborhood. Made him feel useful, like he was doing something. “Can it wait an hour? Only, I’m kinda busy here, in case you didn’t notice.”
“Of course.” Was that a smile under the mask? “I will be waiting.”
Jason gave him a thumbs-up, though he made sure to call: “Don’t barge in again!” while running off. Selina would be waiting.
Jason had had a mother. Still had, really, death didn’t change that. Selina had told him she didn’t want to replace her, which was good cause she couldn’t. As for fathers—Nah. Jason had had enough of those for a lifetime; thank you, Bruce, you can fuck off.
But a big brother? That was new.
He liked it.

Stephanie’s case went sideways the moment she engaged. The helicopter settled onto the landing pad at the top of her roof, and two masked men stepped out onto the platform. Stephanie abandoned her patch of shadow for the bright lights at the center of the rooftop— a skyscraper that towered over the buildings below it. As she did, more men poured from the helicopter, far more than she expected.
They knew she was coming. One masked man sprayed bullets in her direction; Stephanie rolled aside to avoid them. The other five ran towards her.
One at a time, Stephanie thought. She could take them one at a time, and the Spoiler would live to fight another day. Six at once? It might be close.
There was a trick to fighting multiple opponents, or so Cass told her: keep one between yourself and the others. Stephanie bounced on the balls of her feet. She was going to have to move fast.
The first mask came into combat range, gun in hand. Stephanie slammed her staff into his trigger arm, and he dropped his weapon. She kicked it away, then raised her leg for a second time and rammed her heel into his face. He swore loudly and retreated, panting with blood pouring out of his nose.
Two more masks quickly filled the opening, and Stephanie moved sideways to put one behind the other. The first held a knife that Stephanie dodged twice. The second’s gun was useless with a comrade directly in front of him.
Stephanie dispatched the knifeman with a backhand to the throat and a punch to the solar plexus. He doubled over while the gunman lunged forward. The gunman fired once and missed. Stephanie used her staff like a pool queue to shove him away.
The knifeman regained his footing and came at her for a second time. Stephanie swept his legs with her staff, and he and the gunman fell in a tangled heap at her feet.
The fourth man stepped sideways, around his fallen compatriots, to confront her. He threw a few punches that she avoided easily. Not terrible, she thought. She wasn’t doing terrible.
At about that point, Stephanie noticed the man behind her. He tried a low kick the back of her legs that Stephanie blocked with her staff, but barely. While she did, the fourth man lunged for her from the front. She ducked between the two of them and out until the open air.
She had forgotten the man by the helicopter— the man holding an AK and waiting for his chance to shoot. Crap. She tried a smoke bomb, but the mist dissipated almost instantly in the wind from the helicopter. Stephanie sprinted across the rooftop as the bullets chased behind her, desperate for cover. There wasn’t any. She pulled her cape in front of her and braced herself for impact.
Impact never came. Behind the cape, Stephanie heard a series of crunches, another spray of bullets, and the sounds of several men yelling. She peeked over the top of the fabric and found the AK man on the ground without his gun, his arm twisted at an angle inconsistent with healthy bones. The cluster of injured men she had already fought regained its collective feet and stared across the rooftop at another figure that stood before the helicopter: a tall man in a red helmet.
Stephanie’s mission went so far sideways it dropped off the side of her skyscraper. That was the Red Hood. The Red-fucking-Hood was on her rooftop, and Stephanie was in so much trouble, she was so screwed, she was absolutely and fully dead.
The Red Hood strode across the pavement towards her. Stephanie unfroze and brought her staff up in front of her. He didn’t seem to notice. He didn’t try to fight her. Instead, the Red Hood stopped beside her and pointed a gun towards the crowd of masks.
“Well?” he asked, beckoning them forward.
The man on the ground groaned as he tried unsuccessfully to pull himself back into a sitting position. Another mask bolted for the door to the stairwell and fled down it. The remaining four rushed across the rooftop towards them.
Stephanie felled the first mask with her staff— a sweeping upwards blow to the chin. He collapsed backwards, and his companions swerved to avoid him. Hood clubbed one with the butt of his gun, and the man went down, unconscious. Stephanie spun into a kick aimed at the third.
She miscalculated. The man stepped sideways, grabbed the tail end of Stephanie’s cape, and yanked her off balance. She felt his fist slam into her stomach through the hole in her guards. All the air left her lungs, and she struggled to fill them again.
Keep going, she thought. You have to keep going. Stephanie stood upright and swung her staff like a baseball bat at his masked face. He put up an arm to block her, then yelled in pain as the impact hit it.
While the mask was distracted, Hood casually stepped forward, grabbed the man by the front of his shirt, and tossed him off the roof.
For a fraction of a second, Stephanie couldn’t process what she saw. She felt her eyes widen as the man tipped over the railing and began to fall down into the lights below. Hood turned away as if nothing had happened while Stephanie raced to the edge of the concrete.
“What are you doing?” she screamed over her shoulder.
“Helping,” said Hood.
“That isn’t helping!” Stephanie pulled a line from her belt, anchored it the railing, and shot it at the flailing man below her. It wrapped around his ankle as he fell. He bounced once, and Stephanie gasped in relief as he settled dangling in the air, screaming several stories below them but very much alive.
She turned back to the fight and found that it was over. The Red Hood stood in a pile of three fallen men, twirling a gun absentmindedly while he waited for her attention.
Stephanie walked forward and knelt to check for pulses. She found three of them. Thank God. She stepped away again and held her staff at the ready.
“Are we going to fight?” she asked.
The Red Hood shrugged. “Unnecessary. Introductions?”
“I know who you are.”
Stephanie did. She knew all the stories: pre-Hood and post. She knew about the murders and the ambushes and the drugs. She knew about the return and the events that followed. She knew about the Joker.
She knew about the memorial in the Cave, and more. Bruce told stories sometimes. Stories from years and years ago.
Hood stared at her, or at least, Stephanie assumed. She couldn’t see his eyes behind the helmet, but she got the feeling he might be sad.
“You were Robin,” he said.
“So were you.”
Hood jerked his head in a yeah-that-went-well kind of gesture, then reached up and tugged off the helmet. He wore a domino mask beneath it.
“Jason,” he said.
“Stephanie.”
“I’d shake your hand, but…” Jason gestured with his gun at her staff, and Stephanie nodded. No need for that.
“Well,” she asked, “what happens now?”
“I walk away,” said Jason, “and if you’re smart, you let me. Run back to Bruce and tell him what you saw. He can take things from there.”
Stephanie hesitated. Shouldn’t she try…?
Jason smiled at her. “I wouldn’t.”
“Right.”
She watched as he replaced his helmet, marched to the edge of the rooftop, and jumped over the side. Seconds later, the metal head of a grappling hook buried itself in the concrete of the building across the way. She heard him land and swing away again, out into the city.
So that was Jason Todd. Stephanie shivered; she couldn’t shake the feeling that she had just come very close to death. That was rational, she felt, after what happened to Bruce and Tim.
Sirens flashed far beneath her. Stephanie gave herself another second to contemplate, then raced across the rooftop herself, in the opposite direction, towards the Batcave. She swung into the darkness.

Up Top - Chapter 4
Chapter 4: The K-Line
1 Hour, 47 Minutes
Maple impressed himself with how easily he made it over the bridge and back to grab the bag. He even did it with minimal quivering, a detail he alone seemed impressed by.
Three crossings later he managed not to tremble at all.
‘Now,’ Po said to the group as they walked along the roof of an overpriced fast food “restaurant”. ‘Here-on out we’ll have moved beyond the K-Line. Be on your guard.’
‘What’s the K-Line?’ Maple asked, scanning the map.
‘You won’t find it on the map. The location of the line changes frequently as land is lost and won. It’s the territory of the Chasm. They’re a ruthless group, watch they don’t catch you or you’ll be hoisted from your ankles.’
‘I wus left dangling fu’ weeks!’ Gulliver croaked.
‘It was one day. You spent the whole time pretending to be a bat,’ Maggie corrected dryly.
‘Why’s it call the K-Line?’ Maple asked.
‘Not sure,’ Maggie answered. ‘Our last Chief, Chief Stork,  came up with it. Well, she was the one before last. She never told us what the K stands for. Doesn’t matter.’
‘In short,’ Po continued, ‘watch your step. You can see where the traps are by faint white crosses that have been chalked on so the Chasm can avoid them.’
Unfortunately, Maple wasn’t listening to this, instead staring across the cityscape trying to imagine what it would look like to a bat. More or less the same but the other way round, he decided, having recently had some upside-down experience himself.
 1 Hour, 42 Minutes
‘When’ve I ever lied t’ya before, eh?’ Gulliver grunted at Maggie. Maple had just tuned in to an argument they were having about something. He was sort of tuning in and out. There were a lot of interesting birds around.
‘-then there was the time you stepped in my food and told me an antelope did it! Or the time you told me you’d seen a great auk by the food storage so I would fetch you a drink! Or when you told me the surface world is full of people who think the earth is flat! Or the time-‘
This had been going on for a while. It didn’t stop for a while.
The group crossed from building to building with ease. Mostly. Maple had got the hang of walking across the net-bridge and could finally do it standing up, although he needed to pass his bag to one of the others first and had to sing the words to Every Breath You Take in his head to distract himself, not realising that they were actually the wrong words (“Every bun you bake, I’ll be watching you”).
‘Maple!’ Po called, right into Maple’s ear.
‘Ow, right here, man. What is it?’ Maple replied.
‘On the map, are we on rooftop N-12?’
Maple squinted at the map and, there was indeed a small “N-12” sketched into the building. Maple nodded.
‘Excellent. If you would, confirm for me which of these lanes is between N-12 and O-12.’
Maple examined the map again and pointed down at one of the lanes. There were several rude words graffitied on the wall so he didn’t think it was rude to point in this case.
‘Thank you. Gulliver, come with me, we have a pick-up down here. You two stand watch.’ Po and Gulliver disappeared down into the lane, climbing gracefully down the drainpipe.
‘Gulliver’s surprisingly good at that,’ Maple remarked.
Maggie sat down, pulled out a book and started reading.
‘He told us to stand,’ Maple advised.
Maggie turned the page.
‘Cars of the 1950s,’ Maple commented, referring to the book. ‘Sounds like an interesting read.’
Maggie flicked back a few pages to cross reference something.
‘I didn’t think you guys go down to the surface at all, do you do that a lot?’
‘Only for pick-ups.’ Maggie looked up from her book. ‘It’s not all the way down. Usually they’re tucked under a ledge.’
‘What’s a pick-up?’
‘Stuff for the market.’
‘Oh right. I guess that’s another “ask no questions” thing.’
Maggie looked back at her book.
‘Listen,’ Maple said. ‘I’ve got to ask: what’s with this war Po’s on about?’
‘What’s with it?’ Maggie repeated, looking up again. ‘As in, why is the chief so desperate for news about it?’
‘Uh, yeah,’ he lied. He could see it was no use arguing about the war with Maggie, either.
‘Our old chief, Chief Stork, she brought a lot of news to us about the war. So did all the other chiefs, minus Gully, although he wasn’t chief for very long. Chief Po isn’t bringing as much news to us. It’s frustrating him.’
‘Gully was a chief?’
‘For a week. He stepped down after we urged him to. Don’t tell that to anyone. Roof law dictates the oldest in a gang should be the chief, but everyone could see Gully wasn’t fit for the job. He forgets he’s meant to be the chief too. Don’t bring it up in front of anyone.’
‘What happened to Chief Stork?’
‘She died,’ Maggie answered abruptly. ‘Fell ill. The market hospital took her in but she didn’t get any better. She died there.’
‘I’m sorry.’
Maggie returned to her book again. A minute passed in silence before Po and Gulliver returned.
‘Got it!’ Gulliver beamed a crooked toothy grin. ‘Any trouble, y’lot?’
‘Nothing,’ Maggie answered, packing her book away. ‘Let’s move.’
Maple grabbed his sack from the floor. He started to walk towards the next building but as he took a step forward, the roof slate came apart. His foot fell through.
‘It’s stuck!’ he yelled. Up to his shin had gone through the tile.
‘Shush!’ Maggie hissed as quietly as possible. ‘That’s a Chasm trap. Try and pull yourself out.’
Maple did and found that he wasn’t actually stuck at all, in fact his leg came out incredibly easily. ‘False alarm,’ he whispered, relieved.
There was a click from the hole. A mechanism whirred inside. Something shot out of the gap and into the sky, then exploded with a loud bang.
‘That’s no false alarm,’ Po said. ‘It’s a regular alarm.’
A chanting started to rise in the distance.
“Cha-sam cha-sam cha-sam.”
‘Gulliver, our blades are in that sack,’ Po stated in a hushed urgency.
‘Ah, see, now thissus goin’ ta make me sound a bit of an idyut,’ Po said sheepishly.
Masked faces appeared over the roof tops.
‘Elaborate. Now,’ Po demanded.
‘Well one’a the blades came out ‘is sheath ‘n’ ripped a hole in th’ sack. Fell out.’
‘One less blade is fine, Maple probably never had real fight anyway.’
‘Hey! I had a fight with a cat once, it was-‘
‘Naw, but,’ Gulliver kicked his foot sheepishly, ‘then I thought “well we don’t want tha’ apnen again” so I wen’t ‘n’ chucked the rest of them out ‘s’well.’
Po stared at Gulliver with a crimson cloud washing over his face as six figures in black masks and capes surrounded the Wingspans, wielding makeshift weapons and lassos.
‘Chief Gulliver!’ one of them called. ‘How lovely it is to see you!’
