How to tell a story with your character’s outfit

1) think about the ‘why’ of their style

You might put them in a flannel shirt and boots because that fits the vibe you’re going for, but why do they wear it? Not everything has to be super intentional, sometimes people just wear what they like/was accessible to them, but it can be a good thing to consider. If they dress for a specific subculture (punk, goth, etc) why are they drawn to it? What aspect of it is appealing to them? Same with pretty much any other style of clothes. Sometimes it might be more due to location or context, do they live somewhere that’s hot/cold? Sunny/rainy? Are they financially well off? Did the styles of their family or friends rub off on them? Some of this might seem unnecessary or trite, but thinking of it through their eyes/experience instead of purely aesthetic or arbitrary choices can help ground it in a sense of realism and make it feel like an extension of who the character is.

2) diversify

A lot of the time I think writers will get caught giving characters variations of either what they themselves wear, or a handful of specific styles/clothes that they like. This can get redundant and limit how much you can express about a character through the outfit. If you struggle with ideas, pay attention to what people around you wear, people in shows, clothing isles in stores, etc.

3) add little details that tell us something about the character

Small details can help a story be immersive, and help with some more subtle storytelling. However, do note that a single detail on its own might not speak specifically to the trait you’re thinking of. Ill fitted clothes could indicate carelessness, frugality, hand-me-downs, obliviousness, etc. On its own it might be somewhat generic, but within the context of everything else about your character it can fit in nicely to paint a picture. Get creative with these little details, and really think of what they could help say about your character. Mismatched shoelaces, how exactly they wear different articles of clothing (buttoned up/not, wrinkled, etc), whether they wear their watch with the watch-face on the top or bottom of their wrist, whether the frames of their glasses are thin and light or thick and durable, whether their boots are clean and shined or dirty and scuffed, etc.

4) think of what vibe/image the overall outfit has

When you describe the character, a small handful of traits/things should pop out at them. I would advise against being too all over the place with it, if you’re trying to use the outfit to tell your reader twenty different things about your character through one outfit, most of them are going to be lost and the overall first impression of your character is going to be muddled. Figure out what you want to come across first and primarily for your character, other details will slowly come out over time. First impressions are important!

5) leave something for the imagination (or at least for later on in the story)

Mystery is alluring. A reader wants to be intrigued by a character, for details to unravel over time instead of being told everything from the beginning. Sometimes it can be useful to seed something to find out about the character later, or at least something that would only be given depth later. Maybe there is an element of their outfit that feels out of place with the rest, and the reader only finds out later in the story that it was a gift. Or a character who is always hauling around a backpack has a fear of being caught off-guard/underprepared which only slowly becomes evident as the story progresses.

This is something that can be done with a ton of different elements in a story, from characteristics, quirks, dialogue, reactions, etc, with attire just being an additional avenue.

6) parallel and contrast different character’s outfits

This one is pretty self evident, you can use it to demonstrate two characters have very different lifestyles, personality traits, backstory, etc, or to parallel where they are similar. Is one messy, another tidy? Two siblings have the same inclination towards frugality from their shared past? Bright and flashy versus dull tones? Practical versus stylish? Etc etc. I find it especially useful to compare very different characters, or to contrast more similar characters.

For final notes, take everything here with a grain of salt. This is what works for me and what I enjoy in reading. Pick and choose whatever you like, and discard anything if it doesn’t fit with your goal or writing style. Writing advice isn’t hard and fast rules, it’s a craft that everyone does in their own way. "AITA for dumping my boyfriend which led to him being captured by a bunch of crazy pirates?"

For a bit of context, me (17F) and my ex boyfriend (17M) come from a drastically different backgrounds. My boyfriend comes from a very priviledged and influnetial family (I'm not sharing exact details due to his media notority), and it's only due to his influence that me and my friends (17F, 18M, 15M) were given a chance to live on the right side of the tracks, so to speak.

As you can imagine, that was challenging. Me and my friends were put into a unique position.

We were forced to do a complete 180 of our lifestyle and beliefs.

Some of my friends, particularly E (17F), are taking to the change so well - she's doing so well. She's becoming a big name in the fashion world, which I'm so happy for her, she's been so passionate about everything fashion ever since I knew her, and she's doing so well in school too. She just got the chance to show off how clever and amazing she is, she's really blossoming in this new enviroment.

Right. Anyway. My boyfriend.

He kept asking me to give up every last of my beliefs, every little thing that made me who I am today, and I didn't feel like saying no was an option. As I said, his family is exteemely influnetial, and his parents could very well take this new life from my friends.

So I tried to adapt.

I studied hard any way I could. I was supportive girlfriend and tried planning exciting and cute dates - which is a thing that I never did before, so it was a challenge for me - and he almost never had time for me.

I even dyed my hair blonde and completely changed my style to fit in better.

I kept answering these never-ending questions from media that just kept hounding me - I've never felt more like a prey before, and I grew up in an extremely "survival of the fittest" situation.

But it never was enough. Even with all the support my friends and particularly wonderful E were giving me, I couldn't take it anymore.

I decided to end things with him on a friendly note, going as far as throwing in the obligatory "It's not you, it's me," and to make the move back to my childhood home so he could move on quicker.

I just wanted to be myself again, you know?

But my ex-boyfriend decided that I was making in-the-moment snap decisions and that he needed to come get me.

I did not ask him to follow me.

You see, my childhood home is a very dangerous place, especially for a person in his position.

He knew that, and my friends informed me that they warned him against following me repeatedly. Since he was relentless, they went with him, and warned him to stay with them and in disguise.

Keep in mind, I did not ask him to come.

Failing to follow easy instructions multiple times, my ex-boyfriend wandered off and was kidnapped by a bunch of crazy and murder-happy pirates.

Despite all of this, I went out of my way to help him get out of this hostage situation or whatever. (If we're being honest, the pirates like to put up a bit of a display. It's a thing we all do.)

So, I did as much as I could, even though I had no obligation to help him anymore. I got as much information as possible about his situation, getting insulted in the process. I planned a rescue operation, even though I needed to mend all the relationships that were broken by me moving to my boyfriend's place, basically. Lot of people weren't happy with that, so I had to make a lit of social calls.

I really feel like I did all I could at any point of this situation.

CHALLENGES & CAT DICE

Many things a cat wants to do just happen, because cats can do a lot. But when a cat encounters a real Challenge, whether sniffing out hidden tuna or tackling a big mean dog, the Cat Herder might call for a roll of the two Cat Dice. 

Each die showing an alert, intent Happy Cat counts as a success.

A Sad Cat means a failure of skill or luck.

Almost every risky situation is either a Normal Challenge or a Hard Challenge. For a Normal Challenge, you only need one success on the two dice:

For a Hard Challenge, you need two successes:

You get six Cat Dice in the Boxed Set with a cat-shaped dice tray. You can order the dice separately with a dice pouch as well. Regular six-sided dice can work too, if you count a 1 or 2 as a failure and a 3 to 6 as a success.

The Right Cat for the Job (RCFTJ)

Most Challenges are best met by a cat with the right background. Usually this is a matter of the cat’s Role: a Catcrobat being the RCFTJ to leap up a scrambly slope, a Scrapper best at facing down enemies, and so on. As a player you could also make your case to the Cat Herder that you are the Right Cat based on your background, your previous experiences, or anything you can make up. It’s up to the Cat Herder to approve.

The RCFTJ gets one free success on every Normal or Hard Challenge. This makes Normal Challenges automatically successful — but we roll anyway! That’s because of the two mystical combinations we call Snake Eyes and Midnight.

Snake Eyes

If the two Cat Dice come up double 1s, that's Snake Eyes. The attempt results in an Embarrassment. You describe what happens to your cat, and how you try to play it off. Note that the RCFTJ still passes a Normal Challenge — just in an embarrassing way. Be creative in describing this accidental success!

Midnight

If you roll double 6s — Midnight — it means a Triumph! Describe how your cat sails through the Challenge with ease and style. The Cat Herder might even reward you with a little extra information or victory.

Treats

Finally, every cat starts every session with one Treat. The Boxed Set comes with delicious-looking fish shaped treats, but you can use anything except candy. (Candy is against the rules because it tends to disappear before needed!)

If you don’t like the results of a Cat Dice roll, you snack on a treat real quick (returning it to the Cat Herder) and roll again! Alas, this method doesn’t work on Snake Eyes.

The Cat Herder might hand out more Treats based on clever or hilarious actions. Keep those kitty wits quick.

Dire Challenges

In rare cases, a cat feels compelled to try something incredibly important and incredibly dangerous. When tackling such a Dire Challenge, special rules allow you to roll three Cat Dice — but your cat might get hurt in the process. No Treats allowed. No automatic successes. Use with care.

Scrapping

Fights happen. Much of the time, a little pacing, a little snarling, a puffed-out tail, some quick swats, and it’s over. Other times it gets more serious. In Cats of Catthulhu, just how dangerous a fight becomes relies entirely on the player’s decisions. Five levels of intended mayhem determine what you try to inflict on your foe. Even if you lose the roll-off, the worst the baddie can do to you is one level worse than what you went for.

For example, if you face a Scrap and just want to avoid getting hurt, you choose Dodge. No matter how big and menacing the foe, the worst they can do is Stun you — because you didn’t go wildly wading in all teeth and claws.

It’s a unique approach to combat that preserves more options than just murder.

It falls to the Cat Herder, aka the game master or referee, to arrange exciting situations for the Player Cats, and take the part of every other beast, human, god, or object in the worlds.

a flimsy design/character analysis by me ✌😔✌

ok so the paolox brainrot is really getting to me (as if it wasn't strong enough 😑) and i have a lot of thoughts that need to be written down somewhere ok... i haven't really done that before so i thought it'd be a good exercise for me to polish my not so good english and my not so good analysis abilities lol....anyhow. i'm going to do this with their vanilla design that i love so much. more under the cut if you wanna read more about my nonsense ⬇️⬇️⬇️ (sorry in advance for any mistakes lol)

well idk how to begin. let's start with paolo

man. base game screamer. and he's still SAUR cute. ok so. just with his face there's so much i can say already

from his hairstyle, i'd say it feels "let loose", with the bits of strands peeking here and there. doesn't surprise me from a someone living in a household named partihaus you feel me. it looks like he let his hair grow from another hairstyle and haven't cut it since. same thing with his eyebrows, there's little to no care to them, just let the natural hairiness do its thing ! they're super thick and i love it so much. 🐻

however, it does look like he pays attention to smaller details of his appearance still. his beard is clearly trimmed and stylized. that implies that he spends a lot of time in front of the mirror 🪒 also i feel there's self awareness and that he chose that style of beard wisely... i'm gonna be honest, his face is huge lmfao because of his large jaw and chin. the beard DOES make a difference and makes his face smaller. he knows how to rock that beard and a clean shave would be a big no-no.

back to his hairstyle, there's an interesting lifestyle aspect you can pick up. why tie it up ? simply because he is an active guy and his hair would get in the way of his daily activities if he didn't. he even goes a step further by wearing a bandana for workouts. so yeah. i like that it highlights that aspect of his personality !

ok ! that was only the head so let's move on to the rest.

i haven't found anything to say (yet) abt his other outfits so i'm just gonna. focus on these two to lay out my thoughts lol

so despite all of the sims having the same height in the game, i do think paolo is more on the shorter side...because of his jeans lol. look at how it's cuffed 😭 it's one big fold. it's not easy finding pants with the perfect length. so yeah i love me a short-average king !

on the body type, it clearly shows me a man with discipline. i mean it's easy to show cut abs and muscle definition with the slider in the sims lol but i can assure you that this shit is tough to achieve irl. i love to portray him as a loser for laughs (affectionate) but he's a really hard working dude.

judging by the choice of his swimwear there's this whole thing going on where he needs to be a show-off i think...lol. the size is very telling. sculpting his body is one factor for sure and tattooing it is an additional one. out of all the partihaus sims, his tattoo is the biggest. (yeah they all have one its so cute lol...) that's flashy. bold. audacious. he sees things on a large scale. he strikes me as a loud guy, that naturally takes a lot of place around him you feel me. that's why i feel like he would express himself a lot through body language lol. also well. he's italian. 🤌🤌🤌 (unfortunately)

and speaking of his tattoo, i'm not even afraid to say that he's a japanophile because of the style lol... (i remember seeing someone say that he would dress like a yakuza and that's absolutely correct.) i know for a fact that there was a huge anime boom in italy, so he probably grew up being a huge weeb or something 😭 (canon event for half of europe tbh LMFAO me included.) so yeah. ok i did change his tattoo in my makeover but kept the same style 👍 irezumi type.

well. everything about him screams anti system. non conformist. he wants to leave an impact on you and manages. one would think "hey these piercings are all over the place. it's not homogeneous." that's what i thought at first too. i wasn't immune to making things look more cohesive, so one of the first thing i wanted to change was his piercing color. but then i thought about it more... he's a non conformist ! this choice of clashing colors, alongside the asymmetry makes perfect sense. so i backtracked lol. that's now one of my favorite thing about him 😭👍

because of that, i feel like these piercings were made mostly out of influence from mary (will get to that later) but also impulse ? it's easy to have an image of a chill/cottage-ish guy with him being an eco-master but tbh i read him as reckless at times lol. esp with this line from the household description : [Unfortunately, sometimes he takes "fighting" a little too literally.] he WILL whoop your ass so...watch out.

there's also this very interesting physical trait going on with his hair : he's greying. i am pointing that out because he's still a young adult. idk what happened to him, but to be greying this much while being this young, he must have had a rowdy past with bad life choices lol. my mans clearly stressed out. maybe that's why he wears his beanie most of the time idk ! seeing his grey hair makes him look older...he may be self conscious after all...😔

enough of his face. moving on

you can pretty much pick up everything from his base outfit lol. i mean it's pretty self explanatory. reuse, reuse, reuse etc etc. he's ultra frugal and that's so cool actually.

and this minimalism also translates to his body type. i think he eats -just enough- to live...😭 no overconsumption. also since he likes the outdoors i do believe he walks a lot so adding physical work to that, he's built like. a pinky.

so, through the wiki, i learned that his moms were created for him... he was meant to be a 1 sim household from what i understood. but the addition of his moms change A LOT about what some of the accessories he wears means and it brings much more to his character. let me explain.

his mothers are very important to him. like i'm not exagerating lol. both of them are role models to him 100%. (its very infuriating that he only recognise blossom as his mother but to hell with that. he loves them both lol 😤)

first and obvious link to mary : the ear gauges and piercing. "my mom is so cool. i want to do the same thing when i grow up." boom.

second and more discreet link to blossom : a matching bracelet.

now the most observant people will say to me and understandably so : "you made that up. knox doesn't wear that bracelet at all" um akshually. yes he does. it's on his everyday outfit. you have to take his top off for it to show up. 🤓☝

so yeah he loves his mamaws ok....... he's a rambunctious but loving boyo.

Wow, crazy that tomorrow is the last day. (0.0) So that at the very least is exciting. Otherwise today has been a little stressful, but most of that dissolved when I lost the last three hours to the beast that is being zoned while worldbuilding. (>v<) Even remembered that drinking water is a thing! So big plus there.

As stated previously: Appearances mean a lot in Neocago. In an instant clothing communicates the wearer's status, cliques or group affiliation, how dangerous they may be, and even simply how cool they are. This coupled with a booming desire for personalization has created many unique styles.

While decreasing in use and availability there is still clothing made from old world fabrics. These are most often handy downs that survived the tests of time, or at least what remains of them as patches to mend other clothing. While some new old world fabrics are still made, it is prohibitively expensive for all except for a select few. Instead most clothing and fabrics are made from nylon or polyester.

Styles:

Patchwear: More of a "pseudo-style" resulting from reusing and splicing pieces of clothing together. It is a common look in the Undercity, Junkyards, and with Nomads as a necessity because new clothing is either unavailable or usually not a higher priority than paying for food or shelter. The Uppercity has a very 'missing the point' type of high fashion that imitates this with perfectly good clothes after a few tourists felt particularly inspired following an Undercity trip.

Neo-Western: This style replicates the old western fashion using newer materials. The style's odd return is more for practical reasons, namely keeping dust common out in the Wastes and Yards off of under clothing and skin. High collars that help protect the wear's face and duster jackets are fairly common. Also for those that dare to venture out during the day a wide brimmed hat is a must.

Night Flash: This clothing came alongside the transition to a nocturnal lifestyle becoming the default. This clothing makes use of electronic lighting, reflective fabrics, and glowing materials atop a dark base to outline features or create designs. While typically the full fledged style is more common with party goers and clubs, other styles steal some tamed elements of Night Flash.

Polar-Grey: By far the most common across the Midcity and sees some use in parts of the Undercity and Uppercity. This style often has a few layers to account for cold winters as well as frequent strong winds coming off the lake. Like the name suggests this style relies on the monotony of the color grey. This is only broken by a single, typically bright, color localized to a couple small spots such as a stripe outlining the lapel or a scarf. Fake fur scarfs and detailing is sometimes incorporated. Polar-Grey is essentially the goto for business casual or streetwear.

Neo-Panasian: For a few decades before the Great Collapse there was a massive influx of Asian immigration to the US. Particularly from countries such as China, South Japan [yes, this is intentional], Korea, and Vietnam. In Chicago these people's settled closely together. In an effort to preserve and celebrate their cultural identities they made it a point to produce and wear the traditional styles of clothing from their homelands. After the Great Collapse this trend persisted, although a steep population drop resulted in a "squeeze" as these groups banded closer together to help each other survive. This caused the eventual birth of the Neo-Panasian style that blends many different traditional styles together along with incorporating some more modern trends.

Brutalist: A style that was directly inspired by the architecture of the same name. It frequently pairs darker colors with a rigid and angular design that commands the space around it in a powerful way. Like the architecture it was based on there is a lack of defining details beyond shape. It is frequently worn by higher ups of corporations for business and certain formal occasions.

Utopian: A very new style of clothing only ever used by the wealthy. It aims for a clean look with white and semi-transparent clothing. It has preference for more rounded shapes which sets it apart from the more angular Brutalist and Polar-Grey styles also frequent in the Uppercity. Inviting and calmer colors such as cyan, blue, green, and yellow are used in it's detailing along with shiny gold and silver trims. This style emphasis an artistic and futuristic approach with arches that lift away from the body among other little oddities.

Idolwear: This is the wild card of clothing. This is often worn by idols who are focused on directing attention to themselves as well as distinguishing themselves from others. While extremely diverse and in constant flux each week, there are some common themes. The two most frequent are exposed skin, which doesn't need much said, and a shoulder perch on at least one side. This shoulder perch is common to provide a place for a cam-drone to dock for both recharging on the go and to give a POV or close up camera angle. Otherwise, Idolwear takes elements from other styles or more unique individual designs.

Ok so. Let's start with the similarities:

-Both of them are so hands on people when it comes to creating music or art or clothes or whatever they're working on.
