🌊Which Union Admiral Should You Fistfight??🌊
A solemn inquiry
David Glasgow FARRAGUT: ...seriously? SERIOUSLY??? Do you wanna fistfight Farragut? (THAT FARRAGUT??) The "Three pounds of uniform and seventy pounds of fight" then-midshipman Farragut??? FOOL! Even if you manage to bring torpedoes to the fistfight he's Gonna DAMN THEM ANYWAY!!! TURN AROUND, RUN AWAY — DO NOT FISTFIGHT FARRAGUT!! I REPEAT, DO NOT FISTFIGHT HIM AT ANY COST!!!!!
David Dixon PORTER: you think you'd get in this fistfight easy and gonna beat him up to a pulp. Don't — it will only result in a prolonged bout...and it is you who's gonna be beaten to a pulp.
Samuel Phillips LEE: this is the man who successfully managed to defend his honor on a Mississippi steamboat in a duel (ie. Killed him) — I'd think thrice before even thinking of fistfighting him tbh.
John A. DAHLGREN: you land a blow on him and he'd crumple down with a cracked rib and vertigo, so...sure, go on ahead with it I guess 🤷🏽 (but why would you want to do that to him though).
Louis M. GOLDSBOROUGH: he wasn't nicknamed "Old Guts" for nothing — you fistfight him and he's gonna splatter your guts out of your insides by sheer fist power.
Samuel Francis DU PONT: there is chance for you to beat him, but you gotta hang around until half of your match with him — afterwards he should be pretty easy to beat 🤔
Andrew Hull FOOTE: man, he's gonna be hard to beat... Unless you wanna go low (just above the waist line, mind you!) and hit him super hard there (even better if you could punch him from the back) and maaaaybe you could win(?)

Master Shipbuilder: The Legacy of Thomas Andrews
The gale rocks the scaffolding beneath you. The sweat on your hands causes you to lose your grip on the iron rail. You came up to straighten the boards. Your heart pounds. One foot forward at a time. You can do this. TITANIC needs you. Her iron hull rises beside you. The next brutal gust rocks the narrow platform so much, you cannot take another step. Stranded eighty feet above the ground, you…

new chapter (lucifer fic)
(earlier parts are here; whole thing is here)
Ponder on the Narrow House, part 3
Mazikeen + Eve + Michael, gen fic (for now), warning for gun violence
0
Along the California coastline, the cruise ship Illustrious Voyager bore four thousand three hundred and ten passengers, one thousand two hundred and ninety-six crewmembers, and two guide dogs.
Five thousand six hundred and eight souls, in total.
At around 4pm, without anyone noticing, that number became five thousand six hundred and nine.
Hands clasped behind her back, Eve strolled down the promenade, admiring the vessel’s size and beauty. This fresh new millennium’s wealth astonished her. Sickened, sometimes. Entranced, sometimes. But always astonished.
Back in the garden, they’d slept on and under rocks. When it rained, they got wet. When large animals came by, they hid. No weapons. No shelter. No blankets. The only resource they’d had in abundance was food. Good grief – so much food. God had been so proud of all the different fruits and nuts and mushrooms he’d made available to them, and Adam had been so grateful. Eve supposed she had been, too.
It hadn’t stopped her from one day approaching her husband and the plump rabbits resting in his lap – two of several dozen pets – and asking if he didn’t think the cold nights would be much more endurable if they each had a warm pair of fur slippers.
Then she’d met Lucifer. Fallen in love. Bitten the apple. Learned how powerful he and his Father truly were. That was when the real questions, the sticky, prickly questions, had come bubbling up.
If Lucifer has such a vast family, with so many siblings, why can’t I have even one? she’d asked the sky. Why is Adam all I get?
And later: If You can simply bring people into existence, why must I scream and bleed and shit myself in order to have children? Am I doing it wrong? Is there another way? If there isn’t, why not?
And later: Why is nothing fair?
And, most recently, after meeting Mazikeen: Why isn’t everything at least equally unfair? Why do humans get a world of options while Maze and her family are expected to serve angels from birth to death? Why isn’t Maze allowed into Heaven, even after an eternity of loyalty and hard work?
“Sorry,” she said, flashing white teeth at a passing crewmember. “I’m trying to find a friend of mine. Can you tell me how to get to Room 835?”
Half an hour later, there was a splash and the ship’s population dropped to five thousand six hundred and seven.
Before binding his arms and legs, Eve had secured Andrew Bismarck’s lifejacket and gagged him. Furious and helpless, he bobbed alongside her as the ship moved on and Mazikeen rowed up in her inflatable raft, wearing a sunset-orange swimsuit.
“Should I be worried about those, babe?” she asked as she gripped Bismarck’s lifejacket and hauled him out of the water.
Eve smiled at the dolphin pod swimming in playful loops around her, and patted the nearest one’s nose. “No. They’re my friends.”
The inflatable wasn’t big enough for three people, so Eve held on to a friend’s dorsal fin and let him drag her back to The Choronzon.
Michael stood on the deck, looking bored. As they climbed aboard, their prisoner slung over Mazikeen’s shoulder, he drawled, “Seriously? This sad specimen’s worth two million dollars?”
“Actually, his net worth is eight hundred million,” said Mazikeen, dumping him down. “Two million is just what his ex-wife is willing and able to pay.”
Wringing out her hair, Eve added, “She took half his money in the divorce but she gave almost all of it to a chimpanzee shelter. I really like her!”
His lip curled. “How delightfully sordid. Isn’t this all a little beneath you, Ms Mazikeen? I mean, you’re a big deal in Hell. High Commander of Lucifer’s legions, head advisor to the king himself. Aren’t you worried taking jobs like this diminishes you?”
Busy handcuffing Bismarck to the railing, Mazikeen said, “Eve, honey? Do me a favour?”
“Boop!” Eve chirped, having already snuck up behind Michael, and pushed him overboard.
“I know it’s your whole gimmick,” Mazikeen called down as he splashed and spluttered, his face red with princely indignation. “And I know you don’t have a lot else going for you. But the next time you try that on me, I will stop being nice. Kapish?”
“Kapish,” he muttered.
The Choronzon had barely travelled a mile before Eve spotted Bismarck’s henchmen coming after them.
“Someone gimme details!” shouted Mazikeen, busy putting a bulletproof vest on over her bikini and opening up the box she’d told Dan contained a fishing rod, not a halberd.
Eve peered through her binoculars. “Two speedboats. Twelve guys on jet skis. Guns everywhere.”
“Heh. Awesome. Mickey – move that tight ass to the front and make like a nice juicy target.”
“Wait, what about-…” Michael began, trailing off as Mazikeen dove gracefully into the sea.
Bouncing from foot to foot, Eve shot him a grin. “Don’t look so glum, sourpuss. This is the fun part.”
She’d never spoken to Michael in Heaven, despite the millennia they’d both resided only two miles apart, her in a lakeside cottage on the outskirts of the Silver City, him in the crystal palace in its centre.
Granted, she’d not exactly had a warm and fuzzy relationship with any of Lucifer’s siblings. They all knew what had happened in the garden. Some had been nice – Amenadiel had visited often, even though he’d never had much to say and they’d spent their time together skipping stones across the lake’s surface. But the others had kept her at a distance. She was a bad influence.
Michael, however, was the only angel she’d not ever said one word to.
She’d seen him, now and then, in the early days, when she was the only human in Heaven and, as such, grudgingly invited to divine family get-togethers. On those occasions, she’d spent too much time feeling awkward and out-of-place to pay attention to the sullen figure lurking in whatever shadows were available. The one time she’d glanced his way, it had been to marvel at the stories of people getting the twins mixed up; beyond the raw basics of bone structure, Michael couldn’t have looked less like her old lover.
Bullets sprayed across the hull. Humming, Eve stepped daintily into Michael’s shadow, seconds before they started bouncing off his shoulders and chest.
“It is beneath her,” he muttered.
She made an ambiguous noise. “How d’you figure?”
There came a shout and a splash from the nearest jet ski. The bullets stopped.
“C’mon. She’s Mazikeen. Everyone in the Silver City knows about Mazikeen. Ordinarily, we couldn’t give two dry shits about Lucifer’s minions, but her? She’s a minor celebrity. The power behind Hell’s throne. Christ, it’s no secret my beloved twin couldn’t govern his way out of a paper bag.”
“Yeah,” she said, smiling fondly. “He’s kind of bad at everything. Except music. He’s a great musician.”
More shouting. More shooting. More bullets bouncing off Michael’s torso. Mazikeen rode by, one hand gripping her newly-acquired jet ski’s throttle lever, the other clutching her bloodstained halberd. Watching her circle the enemy, Eve was reminded of a sheep dog.
Michael went on: “And then there’s the fact that for a while, everyone thought Lucifer was going to marry her. It was all anyone could talk about. Jophiel was taking bets on when the proposal would happen. She’d have been High Commander and the Queen of Hell. Instead? All of a sudden, Lucifer takes an indefinite vacay to the mortal realm, drags her with him, and next thing anyone knows, she’s working behind a bar.”
The remaining jet skis and their terrified, wounded riders had been neatly rounded up, which meant it was time for Eve to open her purse.
“Um – how long have those been in there?” asked Michael, watching her take out three grenades.
“You want one?” she offered. “Don’t forget to take the pin out before you throw it. I did that my first time.”
One thing to be said for millions of dull, dull years spent sitting next to God’s Greatest Warrior, skipping stones across a lake; your aim got good.
The first blast was a warning, not close enough to actually kill any of Bismarck’s men, though the resultant waves did knock several into the water. They tried to retreat, turning their vehicles around, only to remember Mazikeen, corralling them single-handed and now armed with machine guns she’d confiscated from those already bested.
When they saw the second and third grenade incoming, they gave up and abandoned the jet skis, jumping into the sea and swimming for their lives.
“Fuck!” Michael yelped, blocking his ears at the concomitant explosions.
Gazing past the debris and smoke, Eve saw Mazikeen head for the nearest of the two speedboats. Its occupants, preoccupied with aiming a rocket launcher at The Choronzon, saw her coming far too late.
“I get your point,” said Eve, as her girlfriend and her halberd made short work of the crew. “But that’s a really… how can I put this? It’s a really angelic way of looking at things. Maze doesn’t consider anything ‘beneath her’.”
“Wow. Sick burn. You’re basically admitting she has no pride.”
“Oh, she’s got pride. Tons of pride. Her pride’s just dependant on how well she does a job, not on the type of job she has. She wasn’t happy working at Lux, but that wasn’t because she thought bartending was ‘beneath her’; it was because she prefers doing things she’s good at. Customer service isn’t really one of her strengths.”
The second speedboat was abandoned by its crew mere seconds before Mazikeen rammed the first speedboat into it, cackling victoriously.
“Actually,” Eve said, moving from Michael’s shadow to where Mazikeen had earlier set a crate of peach soda – her favourite – out on the deck, “now that you mention it, I guess I’m the one with no pride. Haven’t really ever had anything to be proud of. Your Dad never gave me the chance. I was never meant to do things. I was just meant to be.”
Michael snorted. “Lucky you. Trust me; he may have softened in his later years, but back in the day he never, ever stopped riding our asses. You think Lucy really rebelled because he had better plans for how the universe should be run? Because he was an innovator? Nope. Lazy dick just hated being told to do his chores.”
By the time Mazikeen swam back to them, saltwater had washed off the blood and her ponytail had come loose.
“Oh, hey,” said Eve, gripping her hand and pulling her up. “A mermaid.”
After pressing a rough kiss to her cheek and taking a swig of peach soda, Mazikeen asked, “You okay? He did his job?”
Eve patted the angel’s shoulder – the one that wouldn’t hurt. “He was terrific! Awesome addition to the team.”
“I didn’t do anything,” Michael mumbled.
Ignoring him, Mazikeen snatched up a towel to dry her hair. “Glad to hear it. Alright! Let’s get Bismarck back to shore, get paid, and find a place to have dinner so we can toast Team Hellrazor’s first successful mission.”
“R-A-Z-O-R,” Eve informed Michael. “To make it cooler.”

"Paradise Lost" by John Milton (read by Andrew Scott)
He looked, and saw the ark hull on the flood, Which now abated; for the clouds were fled, Driven by a keen north-wind, that, blowing dry, Wrinkled the face of deluge, as decayed; And the clear sun on his wide watery glass Gazed hot, and of the fresh wave largely drew, As after thirst; which made their flowing shrink From standing lake to tripping ebb, that stole With soft foot towards the deep; who now had stopt His sluces, as the Heaven his windows shut. The ark no more now floats, but seems on ground, Fast on the top of some high mountain fixed. And now the tops of hills, as rocks, appear; With clamour thence the rapid currents drive, Towards the retreating sea, their furious tide. Forthwith from out the ark a raven flies, And after him, the surer messenger, A dove sent forth once and again to spy Green tree or ground, whereon his foot may light: The second time returning, in his bill An olive-leaf he brings, pacifick sign: Anon dry ground appears, and from his ark The ancient sire descends, with all his train; Then with uplifted hands, and eyes devout, Grateful to Heaven, over his head beholds A dewy cloud, and in the cloud a bow Conspicuous with three lifted colours gay, Betokening peace from God, and covenant new. Whereat the heart of Adam, erst so sad, Greatly rejoiced; and thus his joy broke forth.

Bath Built is Best Built- USS Zumwalt was built in Bath Maine
How Do Stealth Destroyers Sail the Seven Seas (And Not Sink?) When faced with high winds, up to 20-foot waves and dangerously rough seas -- which Navy ships can survive? and continue to wage war on the open sea?
Would the new stealthy USS Zumwalt destroyer capsize or suffer extreme damage if its wave-piercing Tumblehome hull were subject to massively dangerous stormy sea conditions?
Such questions, often put to the test with new ships during “sea-trials,” were of particular relevance with the Zumwalt, as it is a first-in-class high-tech warship built with a sleek, more linear, stealthy hull. There have been persistent questions as to whether the ship might have stability problems in dangerous sea states, given that it does not have a standard “flare” shaped ship hull used by most destroyers and carriers. Rather, it has a thinner, sharper, smaller wave-piercing hull intended to increase stealth, maneuverability and speed.
The answer, according to the Commanding Officer of the USS Zumwalt Capt. Andrew Carlson, is that the ship has remarkable, if even somewhat surprising, stability.“We took advantage of a Gulf of Alaska storm which reached Sea State 6 conditions. We were able to drive around in that at full power,” (Sea State 6: A world Meteorological Organization Standard specifying 13 - to 20 foot waves and rough seas). I had some hesitations and I knew the ship rode differently, but I would rather ride this ship in heavy seas,” Carlson said recently during a presentation at the Surface Navy Association Symposium, Arlington.
Carlson explained that, while the rough seas were as always nerve-racking, the ship seemed to “come back” from a roll caused by extremely rough seas. He said that during the heavy storm, “green water waves were coming up on the bow.”
“You get used to the roll period. It is short. If you are working on top on a cruiser in rough seas, you wonder if you are going to come back (roll back flat in rough seas). With Zumwalt, we don’t experience that. You get used to finer oscillations,”
Carlson, who said the Navy still has work to do assessing and preparing the ship for war, said “these sorts of lessons quiet the anxiety.”The much-analyzed Tumberlome hull is engineered to slice through the waves with a smooth, stealthy, linear type of hull. It is designed to not only help the ship achieve greater speed and maneuverability, but also intended to increase the ship’s stealthy characteristics. A smaller mass beneath the water naturally reduces any kind of acoustic return signal to enemy sonar. While not likely to remain completely undetectable at certain ranges with certain kinds of sonar, the ships surface and undersea configuration is reported to massively change any kind of radar or sonar return signal -- potentially confusing potential adversaries as to the actual nature of the ship. At one point earlier in the ship’s development, Naval Sea Systems Command reported that the USS Zumwalt appeared as a “small fishing boat” to enemy radar.

Lincoln's Trident — Personal Highlights (part II)
The gander 'round New Orleans (and beyond*)
*as in, up the Mississippi river, further away from NOLA 👀🌊
Tumblr media
...wouldn't this be quite the fun sight to behold? Ships bursting to the seams carrying Union soldiers to NOLA 😏 (cue that clip from Oversimplified's Pig War 😂)
Tumblr media
...is it bad if I get Schadenfreude from Stanton's bitterness?? 🙈👀
Tumblr media
So just like what the Department of the Navy ordered Farragut after his pass to New Orleans, some of the ships in his squadron sailed up the Mississippi to link up with Andrew Hull Foote (who is so far also busy fighting traitors upriver), then take back the whole river into Union control. This ofc entails subduing all the traitors they met along the way.
Anyhow it's kinda incredible that Sammy Lee was out there demanding the town of Vicksburg, MS to just surrender(!) to the West Gulf Squadron 😏 (esp. if you know about the ensuing campaign going on to subdue Vicksburg...)
Tumblr media
Talk shit get hit — or in this case shoot shit get shot back(...?) ahddmsjkdgk yeah that's a clunky one 😅😅😂🙈
Tumblr media
Enter Benjamin Butler — oh golly, to think that these all don't even cover the whole extent of his notoriety 🙈🙈
(also this is a rather minor point but I just have to point this↓ out...)
Tumblr media
"The Butler brothers served like wrestlers in a tag team bout." ...I'm sorry but do you expect me to keep a straight face after reading that?? skdkdf 😂🤣🤣🙈
Tumblr media
So remember William Mumford, the chap that tore off the Old Glory from the Mint building in NOLA? Well now he just got merced by Butler! (Yeah I get big time Schadenfreude from this one ngl). To hell with propriety towards southerners, is what encompassed Butler's occupation of NOLA (main point is I get to do what I the government asked me to do!).

Microbes Point the Way to Shipwrecks
Tumblr media
Off the coast of Mississippi, under 4,000 feet of water, a luxury yacht is slowly disintegrating. Marine creatures dart, cling and scuttle near the hull of the wreck, which has been lying undisturbed for 75 years. But there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to this shipwreck and others, researchers have now shown — distinct assemblages of microbes inhabit the seafloor surrounding these structures, helping to turn shipwreck sites into artificial reefs rich in life.Shipwrecks are trespassers on the bottom of the ocean, human-made structures decidedly out of their element. But a wreck’s intrusion gradually becomes welcome as various forms of marine life seek refuge among the steel and wood. The macroscopic animals that inhabit shipwrecks are only there thanks to much smaller forms of life, said Leila Hamdan, a marine microbial ecologist at the University of Southern Mississippi. That’s because microbes like bacteria and archaea coat surfaces in a sticky layer, a biofilm, that functions as a chemical and physical come-hither call for larger creatures such as barnacles and coral, Dr. Hamdan said. “A shipwreck can never become an artificial reef unless the microorganisms are there first.”Her team is researching how the presence of a shipwreck affects microbial communities. This field of research, shipwreck microbial ecology, is a niche area of study that spans archaeology, biology, ecology and marine science, she said. “As far as we know, we’re the only ones doing it right now.”In September 2018, Dr. Hamdan and her colleagues departed from Gulfport, Miss. aboard the research vessel Point Sur. Roughly 70 miles off the coast, the team lowered a remotely operated vehicle called Odysseus into the 80-degree water. Within 45 minutes, Odysseus’s seven thrusters had propelled it to the seafloor. There, it began emitting sonar pings to locate Anona, a shipwreck first discovered in the 1990s that the team knew was nearby. The 117-foot yacht, built in the early 20th century for a Detroit industrialist, was once sumptuously appointed in mahogany and teak, with a social hall that featured a piano. It sank in 1944, when the steel plates beneath its engines buckled during a voyage to the British West Indies. (The structural failure sent the crew of nine scrambling into a raft, and they drifted for two days before being rescued.) Anona fell to the seafloor upright and intact, its bow pointing toward Cuba.Dr. Hamdan and her colleagues directed Odysseus around the shipwreck. The remotely operated vehicle, about the size of a small car, carried a payload of clear plastic tubes. At predetermined distances from the shipwreck — ranging from about 300 to seven feet — one of the vehicle’s robotic arms plunged a tube the size of a water bottle into the fine gray sediment of the seafloor. The team collected cores off the yacht’s bow, starboard side and port side. (On previous research cruises, the team had collected cores as far away as 3,300 feet, including ones off Anona’s stern.)In June and July of last year, the team conducted similar fieldwork at two other shipwreck sites that they discovered in the Gulf of Mexico. Based on the shapes of the wooden sailing vessels and the artifacts found nearby, the ships were most likely built in the 19th century. Like Anona, both vessels were upright and intact. One rested in relatively shallow water, about 1,700 feet, and the other lay beneath more than 5,900 feet of water.Back in the laboratory, the team extracted microbial DNA from the cores and sequenced the genetic material. “We look both at who is present and what their abundance is,” Dr. Hamdan said. The researchers found the largest diversity of microbes — several hundred types — roughly 160 to 330 feet away from Anona. That makes sense based on the age of the shipwreck, Dr. Hamdan said, since the structure is providing resources to microbes. “Those resources begin to spread over time, and with the resource follows the microbes.”The team also discovered that the seafloor’s microbiome varied with distance from Anona. That’s something that had not been demonstrated before, Dr. Hamdan said. “A shipwreck sitting on the deep ocean floor is materially changing the biodiversity of the seabed.”Near the wooden sailing vessels, the scientists found bacteria that degrade cellulose and hemicellulose, some of the primary components of wood. “That gives us an idea that maybe they’re feeding on the shipwreck,” said Justyna Hampel, a biogeochemist at the University of Southern Mississippi who led the analysis of the two new shipwreck sites.Because there is no light and only limited sources of energy in deep water, survival “defies the normal routes of life,” Dr. Hampel said. The microbiomes of the two newly discovered shipwrecks are also distinct from each other, the team showed, which raises the question of whether water depth plays a role in dictating microbial communities. It’s unknown whether these microbes were transported to the seafloor or they were there all along and conditions simply became conducive to their flourishing after a ship sank. “That’s the million-dollar question in microbial ecology,” Dr. Hamdan said.In support of the second idea, there’s a theory that “everything is everywhere, but the environment selects,” she added. As an example, it’s entirely possible that an individual spore of bubonic plague is sitting on my desk right now, she said. “It’s just there, waiting for the right conditions.” Similarly, shipwrecks create a new environment that is hospitable to some microbes but inhospitable to others, she said.Dr. Hamdan’s students are doing experiments on the seafloor to investigate where the microbes came from, and where they go when they leave shipwrecks. These results were presented this week at the Ocean Sciences Meeting in San Diego.Magnificent ecosystems exist around shipwrecks, said Andrew Davies, a marine biologist at the University of Rhode Island who was not involved in the research. But it’s been largely unknown how these artificial structures affect the surrounding seafloor, he said, so it’s good to see studies like this that are focused on “habitats of opportunity.”In the future, Dr. Hamdan and her colleagues plan to study microbial communities around other shipwrecks. There are plenty of possibilities — more than 2,000 shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico, she said. “We absolutely need to go to more sites.” Read the full article

Thea - Journal Entries #14-18
“They say that the first step is the hardest. More than ever before the momentum of battle and those surrounding you, cloud your judgement to continue going forward. Like a wheel, you’ll eventually break from the speed and veracity of your actions. You will fall into a shattered pit of discarded remnants. These are your friends. This is your first step. Loss.”
- Unknown,  ext. Azerothian Lightbringer pg. 11
(OOC: Raid spoilers for Battle of Dazar’Alor, also TW: Blood, Violence, Vomiting)
14. The Breach
The waves crashed against the dawning sea as we made our approach to the coast of Zuldazar. It wasn’t the most relaxing boat ride as sleep evaded most of the soldiers on board. The captains fell in line on the open deck as we caught glimpses of the cascading gold pyramid. Our goal was in sight and we had this planned down to the minute, so long as the distraction team was successful. Into the heart of a monster. Simple in concept, but what we faced was far worse. I quickly gathered the medical kit I had been preparing on the journey here, fresh with Mage Royal tinctures and Peace Bloom injections should we face capture. A peaceful death was far better than a torturous one, and one couldn’t help but be prepared when we entered Death’s chamber. Folk tales were emerging from some of the anxious soldiers who had experienced a Loa’s wrath first hand and lived to tell the tale. I didn’t know much about the troll’s worship, but I could certainly say Bwonsamdi was sure to have field day today.
I gave some confident nods to the men and women as I exited the brig and went top-side to join the other captains, Pye met my glance with pursed lips turned into a frown as he finished peering through his spy glass, reluctantly offering it to me so I could have a closer look. He pointed towards the sky, northwards. I peered inside the patina cooper tube to see a flock of pterrordax riders flying towards Nazmir. Good. Air assault was not in the picture to deal with on the docks, so this was an excellent favor in our future victory. I handed the spyglass back to a confident looking Pye. I held out my gloved hand to him, “I wanted to apologi-” He cut me off, “Can it Kain. We aren’t friends here. We aren’t friends back home. Rally your troops and make them fall in line in two minutes, I’ll meet you here with mine. Once the Lord Admiral’s ship completes phase two of operations we will have three minutes before making landfall.” He walked off with a grumble as I lowered my hand to rest atop my hammer, eyebrows raised in a matter defiance. Fine. I guess I’ll just let you die. No... no what was I thinking.
I went back into the brig attempting to harness Andrew’s prowess, he’d know exactly what to say. I approached my team as they quickly fell into line, hushing the bustle of chatter that they had. I closed my eyes and let my senses take over the rest. As I opened my eyes, I began to bellow out words that were not my own, channeling his strength.
“Fire Team Beta. It has been a great honor to train and get to know each of you in the last twelve hours. I’ve been tasked to keep you alive and I think you all have proven your track records as the damned best that the Alliance has to offer. This will not be enough for today, no. What you must do is beyond comprehension, beyond skill, beyond luck - you will be entering the heart of Horde infrastructure. Infrastructure that we will be dismantling from the inside, out. A critical blow that they will dare not recover from. Today you will break bonds. Today you will strike their heart. Or we will die. You all know what must be done. Now prove to me that you can do it. Light guide you all! Now move!”
One by one they gave me a salute as they each climbed to the upper deck to see where the future carnage would be in store. The last to disembark was Pruet, his scrawny frame in his royal blue and gold cloth fell in odds ways as he saluted me. I pulled him aside. “You are going to prove me wrong. I know it. Pye speaks highly of your intelligence. Now put some of that-” I jabbed his head with my pointer finger and traced down his chest to his heart “-book-smarts where it matters most. Remember the footing I taught you too.” I slipped my leg under his thigh to attempt to sweep him but his stance was much more secure this time around. He was ahead of the curve as he knocked me into the crates with a gust of frosty air. I couldn’t help but smile. “Very, very good. Now go up and join the rest of ‘em.”
Tumblr media
As we edged closer and closer to the docks we could see flares lighting up the early morning sky one by one they knew we were encroaching. This was the ploy. Horns blared from the capitol city, this was followed shortly by ballista fire streaking large missiles of flame high into the sky, as they hit terminal velocity I could hear the distant cries as they found targets. One. Two. Hit meters in front of our assault. The third... Hit home. “INCOMING!” The call was deafening as the projectile crashed into the side of the hull exploding in array of debris, knocking me and few others onto our backs. I gasped for air attempting to reorient myself, my vision becoming clear as I saw a fourth projectile streak into the center of the Kul Tiran vessel that was leading us into the breach. Flames erupted from the heart, Light, no.
I could see Lord Admiral Jaina clear as day, leaning in shock on the banister towards where the wound was inflicted upon her ship. She looked back towards her captain and in split second I thought we were lost. The fifth flaming bolt aimed straight for her. Adrenaline must had taken over as she streaked a vivid amethyst bubble into the air, missing her by mere inches as she braced for the worst holding her hands aloft. The projectile shattered in a million pieces as she too gasped for air. The wide blue eyes looked like they had endured far more storms than I had ever witnessed. Two more missiles crashed into the vessel on either side and I knew that our plan was already failing. We are surely going to be lost in the storm ahead.
Time seemed irrelevant in the current span as we were bombarded by more and more death reigning from the sky, charred crew members were being dragged as boiling blood was seeping into worn wood of the deck, I couldn’t help but be frightful as our demise was imminent. I looked forward onto the coast, knowing full well we were entering the viper’s nest. Before all hope was lost, one by one, explosions lit aflame to the enemy ships that populated the harbor. I laughed in relief. We did it. Light, thank you.
15. The First Step
A mild sense of vertigo washed over me as I looked to the high mountains and shimmering gold capitol, disembarking our damaged vessel. I wielded my hammer and shield in preparation for the onslaught of attacks from Zandalari and Horde reinforcements as we rushed onto the dock, a forward was beginning to assemble with spears in hand and Horde insignia painted crimson on their shields as they rushed to cover the entrance to the city - I looked to my team and called out, “Beta Team! I want a forward on that line! Infiltrators in the front, casters in the back! I want Turtle formation going forward-” The ten infiltrators raised their shields high up in the sky as they stacked together into a woven shell to protect us from the arrows that were beginning to arc above us. Pye’s team followed suit on the right side, miming my commands as the two teams marched forward. “CASTERS ON MY MARK!” Pye bellowed at the top of his lungs as the shielded arcane wielders began focusing energy between their fingertips. A combination of frost bolts, fire balls and arcane sigils began to take root in their hands as they widened their stances.
Volleys of arrows and gunfire cascaded from the enemy line as they whirled through the air at extreme speed meeting our assault. We edged closer and closer onto the docks before getting within sixty meters of our first targets, “Fire!” Pye shouted, a cacophony of lethal magic projectiles arched through the air as they met their targets. One by one I could see weaknesses in their line as Horde soldiers fell, covered in thick layers of frost or burned to a crisp. Some floated in the air, paralyzed as their armor withered away from the arcane traps binding them. I shared glances to Pye, motioning our offense forward as we moved towards the capitol.
Swords and spears clashed as our formation broke out. The brutish trolls, towering orcs, and withering forsaken all growled and hollered in anger as we continually shield bashed them back. One after another the back line of their defense fled, seeing the outcome of their allies falling in either a slash of blows or met with a torrent of frost and fire. Finally the front-liners dispatched the last of the now mangled bodies that lay on the stone dock, blood seeping into the cracks. I looked to a now smiling Pye, but the happiness only lasted for a moment as he rose a pointed finger towards the first set of stairs of the assault that awaited us. The Zandalari troll female sat upon a dark green raptor, adorned with worn gold armor. She had a maroon mohawk that stuck out from her dull grey skin and polished piercings in her lips, ears, nose, tusks, and eyebrows. Her leer was palatable, I could see the seething rage in her glowing aqua eyes, shimmering in contrast to her golden plate armor as she steered the raptor down the steps.
My instincts surged through me as bullets, arrows, and arcane fire rained down upon us from the second plateau. They knew we were here now, but their numbers were thinning, I yelled to the troops, “Alpha, Beta, TURTLE MARCH!” As we were met in stride by the Zandalari paladin. Her christened wings burst forth in holy procession as she leaped off her raptor, somersaulting, and then gliding to meet the turtles near the water... Her broad sword clashed the shield barriers, the front men of Alpha team scattered and were thrown off the dock. Radiant swirls erupted from the ground at her feet. Pye charged with his polearm, grunting loudly as the blades connected trying to rework his footing, attempting to block her from another swipe at his men. Despite Pye being at least 6 foot, she towered over him with a glare of seething anger. Her tactics were barbaric, thrusting him back and swiping his feet right from under him. I rushed forward blocking a rogue arrow with my shield, spinning around and sprinting to my target.
I jumped up the sparsely littered crates at the gate in order to gain the advantage but she was quick on her feet, no longer focused on Pye who was still prone on the ground. I looked to the rising sun on the horizon, smiling. The Light would be on my side this day. I could feel it’s warmth as I soared through the air, throwing my hammer to cover the sizable distance. Judgment day was upon the Horde... War, famine, death... And I was the one to deal this blow. The hammer struck her in the chest, knocking her down a peg - wasn’t expecting that now, huh? I landed, wincing as the shock of pain in my ankles and legs coarse it’s way up, holding my hand out - letting my hammer return... to... my... Oh... “Oh no.” I breathed, as I saw a devilish smile encroach on the troll as she held my hammer into her chest, letting the holy fire burn the cavity that I had dealt, but she knew... she knew that I needed that to win this fight. I held my shield aloft, bashing her forward and throwing her off balance, she gripped the flaming hammer as it embedded deeper and deeper, penetrating her faded gold plate. She struck with her sword in a downward spike on my shield as I braced. “LIGHT!” I screeched. The clash was that of a tower bell, as a shock wave cascaded across the field of battle. I was knocked prone, but as was she.
I crossed the field and engaged her again before she could stand, grabbing the bloody mess of my hammer out of her chest before striking into her hip, and then her chest, then her head, Repeatedly blow after blow as the ringing in my ears slowly subsided. An arm grabbed me from behind, “THEA! THEA! STOP, WE NEED TO KEEP MOVING!” The mangled corpse sat in front of me, blood dripped down my chain mail and plate. Pye held me back as I shrugged his hand meeting his clenched jaw and focused demeanor. We jogged up to our men who had dispatched most of the defense that was now falling back, upward towards the capitol’s heart.
16. The Second Step
We had lost seven men and women on the first step altogether so that left us with forty-three to get us to the marker for Gamma and Delta teams to infiltrate the palace. Pye pushed forward as I assessed the casualties, with Delta team behind us already dragging the limb corpses towards the ships. I got the nod from the other captain, as she gave me a fierce grin - I continued up the steps with the rest of our teams.
The waves of onslaught continued despite the opposition slowly retreating but just like the first step we were met with not one, but two individuals cutting through the crowd. A menacing looking orc female in grey leathers adorned with teeth, larger than any creature than I’ve ever fought, and a sin’dorei male with short blond hair and crimson robes. He brandished his staff forward as fireballs lit up in front of us, slamming into the front most line of our troops. The smell of burning flesh hit my senses and I had to resist the urge to vomit, swallowing the heat wave that erupted before us. The orc rushed with a volatile green wisp unleashing a flurry of blows on our mages knocking them down, one by one. I charged forward, eyeing the orcish monk.
I heaved my mace towards her abdomen as she sucker punched Pruet, knocking him off balance and to the ground. My mace connected, knocking her back five feet. I had her attention now. She made up the distance as she spun and spun around kicking and lashing out in a cacophony of chi energies, blistering the ground in sickly ivy. I dodged and blocked the first two blows before her image blurred. Her foot lodged into my ribs for the first strike, following that with a leg sweep. My vision went dark as my helmet dropped in front of me. I shimmied myself reaching for it as she loomed over me kicking it away from me... this was it. My shield and mace were on the ground and she smiled in assured victory, the backdrop of horde and alliance soldiers clashing in the background. I keeled over now feeling the pain in my legs and side... I can’t. I won’t lose... I picked myself up and she bellowed in laughter as I raised my fists weakly, blowing my blood encrusted, tangled hair out of my face, “Fuck you.” I breathed as I went in for an uppercut, which was easily dodged by my far more well equipped adversary.
We exchanged blows, but she was far stronger and faster, dodging every single punch and kick - everything in my gut that she just punched was telling me to run, but I have too much riding on this victory. She kneed me in the chest as I collapsed on the ground again, spiting a spray of blood on the ancient stonework. I gripped my holy symbol and lashed a holy shock in her direction, scoring her left shoulder as it ignited in radiant energy, lighting a flame that distracted her as I rose up and shoulder charged her into a tackle. I elbowed her in the face once, twice, three times, blood pouring out of her nose as she enveloped her legs around my waist attempting to grapple my lower half. She shifted her weight and we rolled flipping positions and now I was met with a barrage of elbows and punches to the face. I was struggling to maintain consciousness as I grasped her legs attempting to squeeze out of them to wiggle myself out but she was too strong, finally I gave up, raising my arms to guard my face and upper body as she wailed another volley of blows on me.
A chill ran up my spine, my vision was blurred beyond all the drunken brawls I had ever been in. I could feel myself letting go, the overcast sky blocking any semblance of hope. She rose off of my now limb body, towering over me and smiled a toothy grin, before lifting her leg above my own. I felt the pain before it connected to what she had done. The sharp pain was dulled by the adrenaline, but it still hurt worse than any punch I had ever taken, more than any kick to the side. More than anything. My right foot was crushed under her own. The last sight before my vision went to black, was her wicked grin. And a frostbolt hitting her square in the face.
17. The Third Step
I gasped for every breath I could muster as the dusty air filtered back into my lungs. The pain was excruciating. My vision was still clouded, large black spots obscuring the majority of my sight, but what I could see was my med kit sprawled out next to me, as Pruet lifted my leg rolling it in bandages, “Ahh, ahh!” I winced in pain as he replied, “Thea... Thea, oh gods, thank the light you’re still with us.” He blurted out setting my leg down, “Uhh.. erm, which one of these is Peacebloom?” I struggled, but managed to prop myself up, I didn’t dare look to my leg, but I pointed to the opaque white/yellow vial. “I.. I only need a quarter vial. A full one would surely.. ahh... stop my heart.” He poured the vial out on the ground until there was a quarter left and lifted the vial to my mouth which stung when I touched the glass tube to my lips. I clutched the vial out of his assisting hands, downing it as the concoction took effect, numbing the pain. I took a look around the field and it was much calmer now. How long was I out? “They retreated?” I managed to get out before hacking up a combination of flem and blood.
“Yeah, after you pretty much took care of that monk, I just finished her off. Pye’s team had that mage corned, they are already at the third step.” He rushed out, obviously exhilarated, he yelled, “WE NEED A MEDIC!” I touched his forearm as he leaned over me, my words coming out a lot weaker than I had intended. “Pruet, I’m your medic.” He shook his head worried before helping me into a sitting position and I finally caught a glimpse of my leg... I could only feel a dull pain thanks to the peacebloom tincture, as the bone poked through the loose bandage that Pruet attempted to fashion on. I touched the area and the pain rose, I tilted my head to the other side and vomited. I needed to reset it and use a cantrip or something or else I would bleed out. I grabbed my leg on two sides, as Pruet propped himself on me for support. “This isn’t going to be pretty so look away.” He looked away as my gloved hands snapped my foot back into place. I yelled in pain and quickly assessed my work, as tears dripped down my cheeks. Not perfect but it would have to do. I used a few cantrips, flash of light. The light seared the flesh back together, now for the test... can I walk? “Help me up.” I said to Pruet as he pulled me up.
That sense of vertigo returned, as I looked to the mountains that lined the horizon, dizziness from the blood loss, and pain as I tried to put weight on my leg. Honestly, at least I could limp. I wasn’t dead, so that’s always a good sign. I picked up my mace and my shield and we marched towards the steps where half my team were gathering the fallen. “Head count. How many left Beta?” I looked over to one of the shield barers’ who was silently counting, “We lost fourteen. I’m not sure how many left from Pye’s squad, Lieutenant.” I looked over the few members of my team that were left, most of them tending to their own wounds. “We need to re-group with Alpha, we don’t know what we face, but surely it can’t be worse than that.”
Tumblr media
I was wrong. After tending to a few of the soldiers’ wounds and using the last of my bandages on the few that were able enough for the fight that lay ahead of us, we marched up the steps to see a horror that was once our secret weapon to flank our western assault, Grong. Scarred from battle, eyes blazing with fury and... raised....
“AGHHHHH” Roars the former ally as he raised his skeletal fists into the air and crashed them down up Pye’s forward line attempting to calm the beast, and failing... obviously. “Oh, Light.” I mutter under my breath, carrying my wounds up the last steps looking back to the remnants of my team, “BETA! Flank Grong on the left side! Divert his attention so alpha isn’t taking all the blows! Move, Move!” I could read the hesitancy, the fear from them but this... this has to be done. I limped toward Pye who was directing another line of men towards the beast, “What the fuck are you doing? We need to distract the beast, not send the lambs to slaughter!-” I pulled him back by his pauldrons just in time for the beast to lock eyes with me, sniffing loudly and giving me a devilish grin, it smelled blood. My blood. It lumbered towards us, a combination of decaying flesh and fur, muscle and exposed bone. It reeked.
Grong went in for a slam as Pye tackled me on the right sending us flying from the impact. My leg and arm recoiled in pain but otherwise we weren’t pancakes. Pye coughed as the dust around us settled before scowling me, “Look Kain, he was on our side, how was I supposed to know that it’s out to kill us now?” I shook my head, “Pye, with all do respect, it’s obviously not anymore.” I got up and observed our surroundings, the beast was now heading over onto the left side - distracted by Beta, good. I raised my hand towards Pye who was still laying on the ground. “Together. We need to raise hell instead of join it, Commander.” He looked to me, taken aback by my words, but they were true to a certain degree. He grasped my extended hand, lifting himself up, I unsheathed my mace and shield and he grabbed his polearm from the ground, smiling at me. “Kain, you are going to make one hell of a Colonel someday.” I smiled back to him, “Don’t get all warm and fuzzy on me, we’ve got giant undead gorilla to kill.”
18. The Battle of Dazar’Alor
Gamma and Delta met us at the third step to the palace with a medical team to carry the wounded down to the ships. I declined a stretcher, instead I limped down the barren city with the few members left of our platoon that could still walk. As I looked behind us, the carnage of the mangled gorilla corpse, just in the distance, gnomish bombs blew a hole into the infiltration point -  into the pyramid like structure to gain access to the throne room. We did it. Our job was done.
As we boarded the ships, tidesages greeted us before raising hell for the horde counter attack. We disembarked, not knowing the outcome of everything we had sacrificed. Everyone we lost. Great men and women who fought to protect the sanctity of our freedoms, and died. The shine of the capitol and smokestacks soaring high into the overcast sky as we sailed into the distance. Sailing home.

(OOC: Hi, hello, hey, I’m back. Much needed vacation from work and life. Inspiration has been evading me since I got back, but I feel it slowly starting to filter back in. This entry has been in the works for over a month, and my first introduction into writing combat. I would absolutely love any and all feedback so I can improve as a writer. Thanks for taking the time to read, many adventures for Thea and Silas here soon. Next few entries are going to be Thea focused since I have a TON of catch up to do, since she went to the Blooming Fest in Pandaria, and Howling Owl, and of course her journey back home from war. Exciting things! Anyway, have a great day everyone <3)

Marines Attack At Belleau Wood
Tumblr media
A wounded Marine being evacuated from Belleau Wood.
June 6 1918, Belleau Wood--The Americans had only “just got here” when they began a counterattack against the Germans.  At 5PM on June 6, the Marines advanced on Belleau Wood across an open wheatfield behind a relatively anemic rolling barrage.  John Thomason recalled that
[They] attacked across the open, losing hideously.  Platoons were shot down entire....They gained a footing in the rocky ledges at the edge of the Bois de Belleau, suffering much from what was believed to be a machine-gun nest at this point. They tried to leave it and go on, with a containing force to watch it; they found that the whole wood was a machine-gun nest.
With the Marines was the journalist Floyd Gibbons, who had rushed there from Paris that day just in time for the battle.  Gibbons would be seriously wounded in the battle; thinking he had died of his wounds, his piece on the battle was let past the censors unaffected.  In a later memoir, Gibbons recalled:
[Sgt. Daly read the order] quickly, then glanced along the line of the dug-in platoon.  He stood up and made a forward motion to his men.  There was slight hesitation.  Who in the hell could blame them?  Machine gun and rifle bullets were kicking up the dirt, closer and closer.  The sergeant ran out to the center of his platoon -- he swung his bayoneted rifle over his head with a forward sweep.  He yelled at his men: “Come on, you sons-of-bitches!  Do you want to live forever?”
The Marines would take the town of Bouresches, but the Germans held on to most of Belleau Wood itself, and close-quarters fighting would continue for nearly three weeks, the Marines only being briefly relieved (by other Americans).  An American staff officer ordered his liaison with the French: “On that question of relief, leave that matter entirely to the French.  Do not insist on any relief.  The reports that we have show that conditions are not very bad.”  The Marine brigade suffered over 1000 casualties on the first day, and nearly ten times that number over the following weeks.

CANTLON'S CORNER: WOLF PACK OFF SEASON VOLUME 14
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - With just about sixty days remaining until the start of the 2019-'20 professional hockey season gets underway, teams are beginning to ramp up their final roster decisions and making more signings. PLAYER & COACHING MOVEMENT The Hartford Wolf Pack have been busy. They announced the signing of a forward, Lewis Zerter-Gossage, to a one-year, AHL deal. Zerter-Gossage played four years at Harvard (ECACHL) playing in 128 games scoring 42 goals adding 43 helpers for 85 points. He joined the Wolf Pack at the end of last season on an ATO deal. Zerter-Gossage played in five games in which he tallied two goals. He played his prep school hockey in Connecticut at Kent, which is also where Rangers head coach David Quinn played when he was a young man. The Rangers made it official and brought out Kevin Shattenkirk (Greenwich/Brunswick Prep). The move gives the Rangers immediate cap relief for this year. It puts the Blueshirts under the $81.5M cap at $80.4M. The team's two remaining UFA’s, Brendan Lemieux and Tony DeAngelo, are expected to play for their NHL qualifying offers for this coming season. Coming from out of left-field, former New Haven Nighthawk, and Hartford Whaler, Paul Fenton, was relieved of his duties as the Minnesota Wild's GM after just one season. In a "Hide-and-seek" move to rid the team of the contract of ex-Wolf Pack and Ranger, Ryan Callahan, who you may remember retired last month as a result of a diagnosis of degenerative back disease, was “dealt” by the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Ottawa Senators along with a fifth-round pick in the 2020 entry draft for goalie Mike Condon and a sixth-round 2020 draft pick. Sens had the cap space to spare while Tampa needed to create some. Totally legal within CBA rules. Tampa Bay also signed ex-Sound Tiger, Stephen Gionta, as an amateur scout. Ex-Pack, Vince Pedrie played very sparingly in Hartford last year and included an ECHL reassignment to the Maine Mariners before being released. He then signed with the Milwaukee Admirals where he played quality minutes into the Western Conference Final has signed with the Tucson Roadrunners on an AHL contract for next season. Ex-Sound Tiger, Casey Bailey, returns from HC Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia–KHL) and signs a try-out deal with the Hershey Bears. Wade Megan (South Kent Prep) who played with the Grand Rapids Griffins last season and had some recall time with the Detroit Red Wings, announced his retirement at age 29. He will concentrate on his hockey school in his native Canton, NY. The Charlotte Checkers announced the hiring of Pat Dwyer as a new assistant for new head coach Ryan Warsofsky. On the same day of his hire, Dwyer announced his retirement as a player after spending last season with the Belfast Giants (Northern Ireland-EIHL). The Texas Stars announced the retirement of Travis Morin, 35, and noted that his number 23 will be retired. It was also announced that he is being hired as a skills development coach. Former New Haven Nighthawk, and Hartford Whalers draft pick, Jerome “Boom-Boom” Bechard, has been hired to be one of two associate coaches with the expansion Columbus (GA) Fire Dragons (FHL). He coached the SPHL Columbus Cottonmouth for seven years before the team folded after the 2016-17 season. Matt Finn, who played four games in Hartford with the Wolf Pack, as well as with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, and had two other AHL PTO signing stops in Ontario and Grand Rapids, signs in Europe with EHC Linz (Austria-EBEL). Finn played the majority of his season with the Florida Everblades (ECHL). Jamie Arniel, the nephew of former Nighthawk and Rangers assistant coach, Scott Arniel, split last season with Vienna (Austria-EBEL) and then Augsburger (Germany-DEL) has signed with HC Bolzano  (Italy-EBEL). Another pair of Euro AHL signings. Bobby Farnham of Springfield signs with Belfast (Northern Ireland-EIHL). Ryan Murphy, who played with two AHL teams (Binghamton, Iowa) and two NHL squads (New Jersey, Minnesota), signs with Neftekhimik (Russia-KHL) making 63 AHL’ers to sign overseas for the upcoming season. European camps start in the next week. Ex-Pack, Brendan Kotyk, re-signs with Toledo (ECHL). Ex-Sound Tiger, Scott Burt, is named the new assistant coach with Boise (ECHL). Ex-Sound Tiger, and Rangers draft pick, Daniel Maggio, leaves Norfolk (ECHL) for Herning IK Blue Fox (Norway-NEL). Ex-Sound Tiger, Alan Letang, the head coach for Owen Sound (OHL), has been added to the Canadian WJC Team as a scout. Former Whaler, Jody Hull, signs a two-year extension as the head coach of the Niagara IceDogs (OHL). He hires a longtime AHL’er Mark Mancari, as a new assistant coach. Mancari played in Rochester, Portland, Chicago, and San Antonio. He concluded a four-year stint in the German DEL to end his playing career. The Sudbury Wolves (OHL) have hired one-time Whalers scout, Tony MacDonald.
