i think the reason the road to el dorado generally slips under the radar re: racism (besides people not thinking beyond "cute gay shenanigans") is that it Knows the tropes it's playing with are bad. like miguel and tulio are mistaken for gods but it's not because they have 'superior' technology, it's all coincidence and most of the native characters see right through it. chel is a sexualized native woman but she's intentionally using her sexuality as a tactic, she has agency over it. it's using those tropes but trying to use them in ways that aren't racist, trying to subvert them. it has enough Awareness of racism and colonialism that it clearly wasn't meant badly & manages to avoid a lot of the worst implications of its tropes and that's enough for a lot of people to not notice.

but ultimately the attempts at subversion don't really change anything. we're still seeing white men being hailed as gods by native people and we're still seeing a sexualized depiction of a native woman. one of the native people who sees through them is a villain with ~spooky~ native spirituality and the native woman's goal is to leave her culture and travel with the white people. i also suspect the indigenous culture is a hodgepodge of stereotypes, as is par for the course with these kinds of things. sure it's not the worst but that doesn't mean it's good either

yknow AI art has ruined an entire genre of painting to me, i saw one of those smooth anime-realism pieces and immidiately thought ''ugh, AI art'' until i noticed it was posted by an established deviantart user 6 years ago. like ive never been a huge fan of that genre but it looks like a pretty difficult style to master and i feel bad for the artists who specialized in anime-realism only to have their entire market jacked by people typing keywords into midjourney.
