21 times Jane and Jacqueline from the Bold Type gave each other their heart (part 1)*
*I wanted to create a Janequaline gif museum of art and 10 wasn't enough. Part 2 is here.
I have been so struck with Jane and Jacqueline from the Bold Type. I can't believe how little their relationship has been analysed. They have one of the deepest connections out of all the couples on the show and I can’t unsee their burning love for each other. Most of their interactions (at least in seasons 1-3) are sensual, captivating, complex and honest. In scenes where Jane wants to be sick from nerves from being around Jacqueline, I WANT TO BE SICK FROM NERVES. Their chemistry is that deep-rooted and bloody dreamy.
They push each other out of their comfort zones, call each other out when they need to, and live in full love and respect for one another. Oh and every time they are around one another, you can just tell they want to fuck.
And here's the thing.
If Jacqueline was a male character, there is no doubt their relationship would be seen as romantic, heart-stopping and so, so, so sexual. They would be end-game.
I find this so frustrating.
Why can't Jacqueline and Jane be an actual thing, in an actual mainstream tv show? Why can't they normalise and celebrate relationships with two consensual women with an age gap, who love each other and are attracted to one another? Why are older women in shows deemed as nothing but ‘mother figures’, even when faced with dialogue such as "I want to live up to your expectations SEXUALLY" shows their dynamic is not purely platonic?
It's like as soon as women reach a certain age, they are portrayed as one dimensional - motherly, sexless characters in no way capable of being in a romantic relationship with a younger woman. (Jacqueline literally oozes sex and Jane is obsessed by her, so this couldn't be further from the truth.)
Beneath the surface, Jane and Jacqueline's relationship is so much more than a simple platonic mentorship with mother/daughter vibes. I don't think the show writers anticipated how strong their chemistry would be. It’s like the writers went half-way with it, giving the flirtation and longing looks between them without allowing it to happen because Jacqueline can only ever be a mother / mentor.
I wanted to write this post because we deserve female romantic relationships with healthy age gaps like theirs in mainstream media, on a show which champions all different types of relationships. Their relationship is important and it should be seen.
Together, Jane and Jacqueline’s potential to be two gay queens is SO real, it hurts. So, here's the moments they showed that, and gave their heart to each other (part 1).
1. Jacqueline refuses a phone call from Beyonce, in favour of staring at Jane with her mouth open. She's literally like, nah I'll call her back, i'm not done at making Jane reveal her soul to me. Special shout out to "No shit, Andrew", still one of the best lines ever. (S1, E1)
Tumblr media
2. Jane submits one of her first articles, and Jacqueline tells her "It's excellent" while staring at her like she's her whole Earth and Jupiter and Mars and Solar system with spitting asteroids everywhere. (S1, E1)
3. Jane is nervous every time she's alone with Jacqueline. She has hypertension and just lets everything slip out. E.g. the classic confession: "I want to live up to your expectations sexually."
The sexual tension in this scene - r.i.p honeys, don't resurrect me. (S1, E2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Jacqueline calls Jane late at night and they talk about her difficulty writing an article about never having an orgasm. The most mumsy convo ever riiight = no.
And yet... Jacqueline holds on to every word she says. (S1, E2)
Tumblr media
5. Jacqueline constantly has to set professional boundaries with Jane, reminding her that she is her boss. This because a) In the beginning, Jane is kinda the most unruly and shit employee in existence and b) Their tension is cuttable via a knife. Daddy Jacqueline wants to keep her close, but not too close. (Every season, every scene)
6. Jacqueline invites Jane round to her posh gaff, and they sit on the sofa telling each other they love each other with their cute emotional retinas and hand holding. She also met her dog. (And hubby + kids but the dog is most significant.) (S1, E6)
Tumblr media
7. Jane pitches Jacqueline a butt facial article, where she says "I am very interested in butt facials", and tells her she'd actually get one to write it. Jacqueline suddenly can't remember how to breathe and her ice cool exterior goes to shit. (S1, E8)
8. Jacqueline sees Jane laughing with Pinstripe, steps out of her office and says, "Jane, we need to talk." The territorial tigress will see you now. (S1, E9)
Tumblr media
9. The whole scene of actual SEX GAZES where they are standing by the elevators, and it is unclear whether Jacqueline saw Jane's notebook with her Incite/Scarlet pros & cons list that she left in her office.
You cannot tell me Jacqueline's look there isn't a 'come to bed with me now' look. What is she saying if not that?!?! I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT ELSE IT COULD BE. (S1, E9)
Tumblr media
10. Jane finally tells Jacqueline she is leaving Scarlet and she cannot hide how heartbroken she is. She looks like she is internally crumbling.
When she finds out Pinstripe cheated on her she looks 99% less bothered than this. Scarlet & Jacqueline are the actual loves of her life. (S1, E10)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll never forget working for you.
See you in part 2 where we can all collectively cry some more about how perfect they are.

sorry this is loooooooong BUT i was *waiting* for the rachel nichols shit to hit the fan. just ULTIMATE "pick me" energy!!!! DISCLAIMER: i JUST woke l up. i'm 3 hours behind here in LA. i heard the audio, not surprised. but have been ignoring espn in the past few months bc of ppl like her, so i don't know her full stance of chauncey/kidd. but i'll assume it's terrible bc she's rachel nichols. ok SO: she enjoys closeness to these male athletes and what they can do for her image, but says the most surface-level nonsense when it's time to do the serious part of her job. never pushes back if they do even the vile shit. she can't even do the easy part: acknowledging that there's more players in the league she besides the most famous superstars she likes being friends with. or announcing which wnba games are on that night and then complaining that no one talks about the women in basketball. ON HER HOUR-LONG BASKETBALL SHOW. she only talks about the women's league when talking about the lack of coverage, pay disparities, disrespect from media, how more exposure would lead to more money and stability for the league and it's like BITCH???? aren't you in the media?? at espn?? on an unnecessarily long professional basketball show?? i stupidly watched "the jump" all last season waiting for crumbs, and nothing. to make matters worse, the people she placed below her are malika andrews, the BEST basketball interviewer at espn. so respected by players and coaches etc bc of her investment in storytelling. monica mcnutt, who can make any topic interesting, has instant chemistry with anyone she is on screen with, and is just born to lead and host and funny as hell. chiney ogwumike, she's like a living computer and knows every play, every stat, every possible minuscule detail, and has energy for days and carries her own espn radio show. they're all small contributors at most, while KENDRICK PERKINS and matt barnes and paul pierce and richard jefferson and vince carter constantly get/got way more airtime over them. and when rachel would be out, she'd have some random white guy idek his name, fill in. when chiney was in the same city, same building, in her own off-season. and that's only *three* of the *many* black women who can do that job infinitely better! rachel is just a such a hypocrite. like.... chiney's radio co-host is another white dude but is constantly giving her her flowers and defending women who have been victims of abuse from athletes. never plays devil's advocate and instead argues that the nba and other leagues need to hold men accountable no matter who they are and that no, settling out of court does NOT equal innocence and that these people have legal teams designed to ruin lives. same radio show, mind you, that also discusses things like: "is breakfast for dinner overrated?" and "which donut chain is better?" so what is rachel's excuse???? LONG STORY SHORT: rachel nichols is a pick-me who doesn't give a shit about the people she steps on, especially victims and hyper-qualified black women, to stay above everyone. she got too comfortable and needs to be held accountable in a meaningful way. again sorry this is so long!!!! doing this 3 espressos deep is.... not it
don’t apologize cause i needed someone to read her since idk enough about her but this all makes sense! how are you a woman laughing at a man talking about being tired of the metoo movement basically? is this who we are? that’s why i’m saying white feminism is literally a disease because half the shit they preach about, they aren’t living. you seemingly pro-women but when a black women gets certain jobs over you, suddenly they aren’t qualified? it sounds like she’s essentially against affirmative action (which doesn’t even apply here but still) when i swear white women benefit the most from it. she’s just so nasty & sick. that’s how a lot of white women are. fake or hyper woke to either piss off white men, or to somehow use it as a prop to one day get the same power they do. the only thing keeping white women from being oppressors to the same extent of white men is their gender and it makes them SICK, this is why behaviour like rachel’s doesn’t shock me anymore. i really hope espn does something meaningful with this situation but i doubt it tbh

Professional sport: Are men and women equal?
In order to become professional in any sport there are many barriers and adversities to overcome. It’s accepted that in life nothing is given to us. However, it is important to recognise that there are many situations, specifically in elite sport where women are not on a level playing field. There are many hindrances that stop or slow down the progression of female athletes.
Women’s sport has come a long way in the last 100 years and those barriers stopping the professionalisation are slowly being chipped away. Although these barriers that stop women from being professional athletes are still very present. I aim to shed light onto these areas and spark conversation as to why and how they exist in this day and age, and what is being done to continue the progress being made for professional sportswomen.
Defining the term ‘professionalisation’:
There are recognisable criteria for what constitutes a professional athlete. All sportspeople at this level will be expected to carry themselves in a well-behaved manner. They should also display good values such as honesty, being charitable, being respectful and hard-working just to name a few examples. A professional athlete must also be committed to the position they hold, also acting in a way which embodies the position of a role model to a younger generation of aspiring athletes. There is also a financial element to professional sport. They would receive funding in terms of the kit they are provided, the transport they take to and from competition and payment on top of expenses is also a condition. They are essentially being paid a living wage to compete within the world of sport.
Tumblr media
Historical context:
In order to understand the state in which women’s professional sport is in now, we need to understand the historical context. As stated, women in professional sport encounter many problems and have done for many years. Women’s baseball is a perfect example. Talented young women who played softball were scouted to play baseball but only given the opportunity to play professionally due to the vacancy of male athletes going to war in the 1940s. There were many examples of inequality ranging from the expected feminine appearance and etiquette of the female athletes, both when they were and weren’t competing. In addition, the wage they were given was affected, the content of the contracts they signed and all the way to the closure of the league when the male baseball players returned. This raises the issue that sport was seen to be a ‘male preserve’ and not accessible to women.
The timeline of women’s professional baseball:
The video maps out the timeline of women’s baseball in the 40s:
youtube
Sport as a male preserve:
Writing in 1986, Eric Dunning describes sport as a ‘place that serves to insulate men from wider social changes threatening to undermine their traditional, taken for granted, superior social status’. This infers that sport was seen to be a safe haven from any external inputs, and that meant exclusively keeping it a male only activity.
Barriers to professionalisation:
In modern day sport there are still obstructions for women trying to not only become but remain a professional athlete in their chosen discipline. The topic of professional sport for women is more common and more women are professional in recent times, but there are still elements of inequality that exist. Some examples of this are stereotypical expectations, pay inequality and content of contracts.
The ‘feminine aesthetic’:
Firstly, the stereotypical feminine aesthetic where female athletes are expected to look attractive and presentable and are expected to upkeep and maintain this image. An example where the promotion of this was displayed by Sepp Blatter in 2004 when he stated that women footballers should ‘play in more feminine clothes like they do in volleyball’. These comments from the FIFA president were said as a claim that these changes may help grow the women game, but those ideas were not welcomed or accepted. The article below reflects that:
https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2004/jan/16/football.gender
Pay inequality:
Secondly, pay inequality. As mentioned, a common idea of being professional is that an athlete will receive a salary above the expenses they pay in order to make a living. 50% of professional football players who are women do not get a salary, and 30% of them need second jobs in order to make a living. This is a significant problem as it will deter young girls from wanting to become professional footballers. At the elite end of professional football the differences in money is enormous. An example of this is comparing Neymar’s wage at PSG to the combined wage total of every female player in the top 7 women’s leagues. Neymar’s annual wage totalled to £32.9 million compared to £32.8 million divided by 1693 female players in the 2017/18 season. See the link below for a deeper insight:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-5117491/Neymar-wages-seven-womens-leagues-combined.html
Contracts:
Thirdly, professional contracts and what they entail. A contract is essentially an agreement between a higher power such as a club and an individual athlete such as a player. Professional women’s football does not only have differences to the men’s game in a financial & player image sense, but also with their contracts which in turn affect their way of life. On average women in elite level football are given a contract which will tie them into a professional deal for a single year, although just less than 50% of women don’t receive a contract at all. The players that do receive their short-term contracts tend to have certain clauses which can bring everything to an abrupt end, such as injury. It is not uncommon that if a professional female footballer sustains a long term / severe injury then their contract can be terminated with immediate effect. This may also apply to lower-level professional male athletes, but this would never be seen at the elite level end of men’s football, sparking the question… where is the equality? See the link below for further information:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-6422497/amp/Injured-Womens-Super-League-players-sacked-three-months-notice.html
 What do these barriers promote?
 Whistle blowing:
Essentially what that means is that a person is willing to stand up and make their voice heard in order to promote positive change. Andrew Goldsmith In 2015 defined this action: ‘The act of whistleblowing centres on reporting an illegal (or unethical) act by an observer who possesses inside information of the wrongdoing’. Looking at how the term ‘Whistle blowing’ in professional female sport is not only present but also key. An individual who follows the defined action of Dunning is essentially risking what little they already have being taken away from them, in terms of salary, contracts and treatment, in order to try to push further into the direction of positive change.
Examples of whistle blowing:
Retired footballer Abby Wambach delivered a speech at a graduation ceremony along-side two high profile male athletes who both had significantly a greater net worth. She took this opportunity and called on the younger generation of athletes to not only be grateful for the opportunities they are given in sport and settle, but to keep fighting for women’s professional sport to where it is considered equal to men. Linked below explains in more detail:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5768613/Former-soccer-star-Abby-Wambach-delivers-best-commencement-speech-year.html
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the path is clear on women’s professional sport. There have been many struggles in history which have carried through into the present day, in terms of the accessibility and opportunity for professionalisation of women’ sport. Although it has been made apparent from both historical and current day examples that there is a movement and belief in pressing for equality. Through the work of activists, women will never be excluded from an element of our society or settle for less than what they are worth. Both in a financial sense but in a respected sense also.
There is still a long way to go to reach true equality in the world of professional sport. But what can we do to influence change? Moving forward we as individuals have a responsibility of spreading the story of it so far, having the courage to openly conversate on this topic with people who are unaware will educate those on the message that needs to be carried forward. The topic of women’s professionalisation should be actively advocated by both genders as the aim of this conversation is to educate all about the inequality on hand. Also, those in influential positions need to utilise their platform to help increase the reach of this message, influencers have great power in our society in relation to shifting beliefs and opinions of their followers, therefore making this an effective action. The cold hard facts of inequality must be taught to the younger population so that they are more equipped to form their own opinions which in turn put them in a better position to influence positive change in the future. We need to ask ourselves as a society on a regular basis ‘what do we believe is right?’, and what we need to do about the situations that rectifying. This will ensure that our ways are never outdated, and the movement of women’s sport is always progressing. Women’s professional sport is not equal to men. Let’s change that.

Importance of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace
This blog will explore the importance of Equity, Diversity, and inclusion in the workplace. The reader will learn about the significance of Equity, Diversity, and inclusion in the Workplace and our personal lives. While reading this blog, they will become aware of the necessity of these in our workplace culture to ensure a more gendered society.
Equity in a workplace means equal and fair treatment of employees in the workplace. Where there is a transparency between the employer and employee regarding the job, where everyone is given access to equal opportunities irrespective of once ethnicity, culture, and language. According to Amelia Ransom,” The diversity-inclusion-equity trio aims to help every employee contribute to a shared company vision. Let's say achieving "50% of women in leadership" is part of your mission statement for the next fiscal year. By proactively taking steps towards equity, companies would have a better chance of reaching this goal. Hiring managers would focus on recruiting female leaders, L&D professionals could outline leadership development tracks for women, and you could redesign your benefits package to support women across their career trajectory. This boosts your chances of reaching that 50% mark, ultimately gaining from the professional contributions of these women in the workplace”.
Equity in the workplace would mean an employee will feel like a part of the family and they are motivated to do their job sincerely without taking any advantage. So, in such a positive workplace environment, your boss will know your political stance, whether you prefer Justin Trudeau or Andrew Scheer as a leader? Here it shows how the employer knows about once the employee’s needs and desires.
Diversity in the workplace refers to a company that purposely employs a team that comprises of individuals of a different race, gender, ethnicity, education, sexual orientation, and other
attributes. In, “The Importance of Diversity and Inclusion in the Workforce”, it provides 6 reasons why Diversity and Inclusion are significant in the workplace. According to an article published in Organizational Consulting, a diverse workforce benefits society. “Today, one of the biggest concerns for CEOs worldwide is not having the right people to run and grow their businesses. So, they’re starting to look to diversity as a way to address this issue. Besides, 86% of millennial females and 74% of millennial males consider company policies on diversity, equality, and inclusion during their job hunt, which is especially important because millennial's are now the largest generation in the U.S. workforce. Regarding society as a whole, the nonprofit organization Catalyst found that increasing the level of female employment could help raise GDP by 5% in the U.S., 11% in Italy and 27% in India, even before you start to quantify the positive social impacts that would arise from this increase”.
A diverse workforce is ensuring greater productivity due to the contribution of the team by coming up with unique thinking and a comprehensive worldview. Thus, outperforming and helping business and company to expand further.
An inclusive workplace ensures a positive and innovative work environment. An employee who belong to various ethnicity, minority, and LGBTQ community, when their existence and voice are heard, respected, and appreciated that is when the company true value increases in public eyes. According to Sophie Deering, “Employees are more likely to feel comfortable and happy in an environment where inclusivity is a priority. Equality in the workplace is important for encouraging workers from all backgrounds to feel confident in their ability and achieve their best. The higher the team morale, the more productive employees are”.
According to an article by Marinda O’Bryant and Amanda Weisner, CAHRS firm under the Diversity and Inclusion trends, to curb the discrimination faced by the female and to promote job satisfaction in the workplace come up with this framework which I think if implemented
successfully not just in Mexico but in countries around the world will help in making society more inclusive and diverse. “To improve gender diversity in Mexico, companies must follow this key framework (Figure 3) of C.L.I.M.B2:
C – Commitment of CEO and executive committee
L – Leadership development programs
I – Infrastructure programs fostering equality
M – Metrics and tracking of key performance indicators
B – Behaviors and inclusive mindsets, attitudes, and processes”.

Notes on a fair lady
As an icon of screen and stage makes her Australian directing debut, her "gorgeous" aura has made a lasting impression on her cast, writes LISSA CHRISTOPHER.
'It was a complete no brainer," says Alex Jennings of his decision to take up the role of Henry Higgins for a third time. In this instance, it came with the opportunity to be directed by the legendary Dame Julie Andrews, to visit Australia for the first time and to relish what the 59-year-old feels is probably his "last chance" to play the eccentric professor of phonetics in a credible way. Rex Harrison - My Fair Lady's first Henry Higgins - was still reprising the role well into his 70s. "But I do not want to be doing that," says Jennings. "You'd have to find an actress in her 90s to play your mother, Mrs Higgins, for a start, and then there's the whole relationship with Eliza. Is it a romance? I know older men do marry much younger women, but I think it's slightly queasy-making if the gap gets too big."
Jennings is one of those high-calibre, never-seen-in-Who-magazine British actors whose faces are probably more recognisable than their names, particularly for Australian audiences. His career has been focused primarily on the stage - he's a veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre - but he has had some significant film roles. He played opposite Maggie Smith, as the writer Alan Bennett, in The Lady in the Van, for example, and Prince Charles in The Queen. He has appeared in a number of well-known British TV series, from Whitechapel to New Tricks to Foyle's War and later this year, viewers will see him as the Duke of Windsor in the Netflix series The Crown. Every story about Jennings, including this one, points out that he is the only person in history to have won uber-prestigious Laurence Olivier theatre awards for performances in the comedy, drama and musical categories, the last for his first rendition of Henry Higgins, in 2003. Jennings has such a deep, clear and resonant speaking voice that the timber and steel table between us, in a small rehearsal room at Opera Australia's Surry Hills headquarters, seems to vibrate slightly under its influence. It's a beautiful voice and narrating audiobooks is also a big part of Jennings' professional repertoire. His register is particularly low today, he says, because the cast did a full run-through of the show the day before. My Fair Lady is a taxing show, particularly for him and his co-star, Anna O'Byrne as Eliza Doolittle. To sustain your voice over the season, he says, "you have to warm up, warm down, keep hydrated, steam". Then, adopting a plummy tone, "You have to tend your instrument." The upcoming Australian production of My Fair Lady celebrates the musical's 60th anniversary and is a homage to the original, successful Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison. Jennings says he was nervous about meeting Andrews for the first time - "I mean, she is an icon really, isn't she?" - but he soon relaxed in the 80-year-old's "gorgeous" company. Somewhat heavy-handed attempts on the part of your correspondent to wring a morsel of gossip or criticism from Jennings about Andrews end in failure. "No! She doesn't have any strange habits!" he says. "She is fan-tastic. Honestly. Just fantastic. Working with her is like a masterclass. It's amazing. And very sort of touching to see her revisiting something she did 60 years ago. Her staging instinct is immaculate. Her notes are incredibly detailed. She is so fantastic and generous with the ensemble, and gorgeous to be around. She is amazing. Amazing. Amazing." The 2003 production of My Fair Lady was the first musical of Jennings' career. "It was sort of the obvious one for me to do because ... you don't need to be a beautiful singer," he says. He went on to do Candide and a long West End run as Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. His singing, he says, has come along in leaps and bounds, with help from the renowned voice coach Mary King. "I always feel slightly nervous about saying I can sing, probably because someone will say 'well, go on then', but I can sing." He says he has spent time working with the voice coach on really singing - rather than talk-singing - Higgins' lyrics. "I wanted to see how far I could go with that, but Julie is pushing me in the opposite direction - to sing less. It makes sense. His songs are patter songs and you can do more with the lyrics if you speak them than if you adhere to the notes." O'Byrne, who as Eliza spends much of her time on stage with Jennings, says he brings a sense of playfulness to the production. "He's a joyful person, a lot of fun to be around on a personal level, and professionally, his skill level is so high. His attention to detail and his willingness to play around with new things on stage is wonderful to watch." The role of Eliza is a huge one. O'Byrne has played Christine in The Phantom of the Opera and its sequel, Love Never Dies, but never a role with as much stage time as this. "It's one of the dream roles in music theatre," she says. "Eliza has so much strength and bravery. She is the most human character I've done on stage. But on a practical level, the trickiest thing is keeping the storytelling strong all the way through." Andrews, who created the stage role of Eliza when she was 21 years old, encouraged O'Byrne to make the role her own. "She didn't want a carbon copy and I don't think that would be right in our version of the show, so I've felt great freedom in that respect," she says.
After decades of highly respectable success as a theatre actor, including his dream job playing Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Jennings says he wouldn't mind a bit more Hollywood-style celebrity in his life. "When I was doing publicity for The Lady in the Van, being flown first class to LA and being picked up in nice cars and things like that, that hadn't been my career, really, but I thought oh, hello, this is quite nice."
He even harbours what appears to be a near-genuine ambition to appear on Strictly Come Dancing, the popular British version of Dancing with the Stars. "I don't actually think I could do it. It's such hard work, but they seem to have such a good time ... My agent doesn't want me to do it though and I haven't been asked, you know. I don't have that kind of profile."
In the meantime, Jennings and his wife, Lesley Moors, a landscape gardener, make do as enthusiastic amateur hoofers. It transpires that Fred Astaire rather than, say, Laurence Olivier, was Jennings' childhood idol. "I've always been quite a nifty disco boy ... We are party dancers and Prince is very big in our lives. We mourn him." My Fair Lady opens opened at the Sydney Opera House on September 6.

OC Interview
@wortfinder shared this with me ahead posting her’s. I just saw she finished hers and realized I didn’t tag her right.
Rules: Pick a character from your WIP, and have them answer these 15 questions, then tag 15 people.
I changed the phrasing of these questions a little so that they would have a more intimate phrasing/feel more natural for the characters to respond to.
1: I don’t think I know you’re full name?
It’s Lyall Philip Driscoll. I try to avoid any of the titles with it. Being Scottish doesn’t really transfer so well over to English gentry.
2: Is there any meaning behind that name?
I think all of it’s ironic, intentional at worse, embarrassing at best.
Lyall is Scottish, it means something roughly like ‘Wolf’s shield’ and my father was being ironic when he gave it. I don’t know how he thought his first born wouldn’t be his heir, but he always wanted other sons and he always wanted me to serve so he could have more power. Everything he asked was for me to serve to give him power ...
Philip was about one of the things we ultimately shared - A Christian name for my baptism, but a Greek one with a secular meaning, ‘Lover of horses’ or I prefer ‘Friend of horses.’ My father liked horses for the privilege and had an eye for horse flesh, always knew how to buy a good horse. I on the other hand was as mad about them as any four year girl who wants a pony every birthday and that enthusiasm only wavers when I question if whatever horse I want would really be the best fit for both of us.
Now Driscoll didn’t suit my father I mention because it’s the only name we shared, but like all the other irony, it suits me. My father never held any leaderships positions with Robert’s pack. He wasn’t interested in those responsibilities, but he thought I was right when I said Andrew Carter’s pack would make more money than Robert’s ever dreamed of. Driscoll means ‘To go between’ or roughly ‘messenger’ and that is the role I’ve played for both my pack and Andrew since I helped Andrew start the blasted mess.
3: What are your favorite nicknames or maybe something else you’re fond of being called.
I really do like that Andrew never refers to me by any of my titles. When it’s formal, I am always Mr. Driscoll to him. He measures me as a man in my own right, free of anything I haven’t earned.
4: Do you consider yourself a man, are you comfortable with that?
I was born a man, I am a man, and a man I shall always be.
5: What are your sexual preferences?
I don’t advertise my sexuality freely, but I also make little effort to hide that I am a a gay man. I can’t say I’m quiet a proud gay man, but I didn’t grow up in a time where pride in what I was seemed possible. I take pride in things I do, not things I am. 6: Where are you from?
I was born in Scotland, but my father’s interests and government ties had long brought our branch of the family to London. I was only born in Scotland so that my father wouldn’t feel so shoddy about the title he retained. Hard to be a Scottish Lord when you’re born in England. We’ve really been more English than Scottish since James took the throne. I tend to prefer living outside of London, but I’m within the city almost daily and it would be silly to think I’m anything but an Londoner.
7: How old are you?
Too old for you. I was born in 1855, and if I think about it, I’ll figure that out.
I’m one hundred and sixty four years old. My birthday was in April. Funny that I used to think I was far too young for things I wanted.
8: What is your lineage, I know you mentioned a pack, so I’d assume you’re a werewolf? Are you anything else?
I’m a werewolf, of a long line of werewolves. Like most of us, I probably have some blood from the continent, but there have been werewolves in Scotland and England for centuries at this point. We’re rare, but we’ve circled the globe by now. I do probably have some witch blood, too, but not much. Mostly some inane insight into trivial things.
9: How would you describe your appearance?
I think I’m a bit dark for a Scotsman. Especially when you look at me next to Andrew. Dark brown hair, brown eyes, tanned skin, muscles from riding, rough hands because while we might heal fast, it still takes a bit for all the rough spots from hard work to rub off. I’m about average height, 5′10, but broad around the shoulders and broader in the arms. I’m probably twice as intimidating as I’d like. 10: What’s your style?
Anything I can ride in on the average day or don’t have to worry about getting too dirty and rucked up while still looking functionally professional for my day job. When I’m not working in a professional sphere and my focus is on the pack, I tend to base my wardrobe on whatever will look least out of place and most in step with my alpha.
11: Who’s your best friend?
I have known Andrew what feels like all my life. I met him when I wasn’t quiet twenty, but we didn’t become friends til later. Sometime before I was twenty five, we were inseparable despite the age gap. I think that was mostly my fault and born out of some childish idolization, but Andrew needed a friend and I was it. We’ve had each other’s back since I suggested he leave his father’s pack. It was a good decision politically and financially, so maybe that’s part of why we’ve stayed close.
12: Would you ever get a piercing/tattoo?
I’ve considered piercings, I know some wolves who get them, but the earrings have to stay in most of the time. They class with professional fashion most of the time. I did once get an interesting piercing. It was quiet tender and hurt significantly. I took it out when it went out of fashion, but it was fun for the period. I wouldn’t do it again.
13: When are you happiest?
Probably whenever something has gone borderline horribly wrong and Andrew shows up at my door. I get to pretend I’m deeply confused and a helpless oaf covered in dogs. I always like being covered in dogs and I like Andrew exasperated and angry when it’s nothing that can’t be solved. I would do anything to solve all of his problems, but I love how hot his blood boils between the discovery of a problem and its resolution. It’s bad enough to make me consider inappropriate and counterproductive pranks, but if I started, I probably will get to greedy to stop and just end up watching him raging around his office most of the day.
14: If you could reveal something in this room without consequences, what would it be?
How sad it is to be alone. I have a robust dating life including weekly affairs, I have life long friends, people I would trust with my life. I have the respect and admiration of an alpha I am so honored to call my closest friend and a pack that respects me, though I often can’t see why they trust me so ... and I am alone.  I would live longer than any humans I were to decide to date and the pack is about fifty old white men, rather, to be fair, it isn’t. It’s men and women and children and it’s vibrant. They trust me and I love them. I would do anything to keep the pack safe and to support and protect them, even against Andrew, and yet I have what feels a rare privilege to trust my alpha utterly and completely. I want to love and be loved and wake up each day with someone who can be second in my heart to all that responsibility, while still knowing I love them utterly and I want to be with them always. I’m tired of waking up alone.
15: What was your first impression of…?
…Ian.
He looks so much like his mother. Sarah died too young and Andrew will never recover from his role in that, but maybe Ian will bring him some peace. He and Andrew seem the same overly dramatic, messy sort who the British elite try to pretend their above, with logic and reason where mostly reason is just whatever they want most. But I also saw a danger, Ian had already killed Robert and if he made attempts towards Andrew, I needed to be there and I needed to be ready to protect Andrew. That wasn’t because I thought Ian would win a fair fight or that even if Ian cheated, he would win a dirty one, but that Andrew shouldn’t have to kill his own nephew after everything with Sarah. Need be, I would do that.

Dark sun (part 1- Beckett x mc): 5 years lost
Pairing: Beckett x mc
Book: the Elementalists
Word Count : +/- 2900
Summary: It has been 5 years since Beckett Harrington was forced by his father to leave Penderghast and Joane Raven behind. Now he can return to the place and the people he has missed all these years to finish his PhD.
Author note: this is my first attempt at writing fanfiction and at writing in English since i am not a native speaker. I appreciate every comment and every correction since it will help me improve my writing. I hope you will enjoy my first attempt at a series for the choices book the Elementalists. The characters and the world belongs to Pixelberry Studios.
It had been five years... Beckett hadn't been able to write on his thesis for a whole month since he knew that he would be able to return to Penderghast College of Elemental Magicks for the remaining years to complete his second PhD in "genetic and epigenetic studies of magical predispositions and attunements". He was exited and afraid at the same time...
5 years ago he had graduated in Penderghast, majoring in "evolution of magickal abilities and attunements” and "biochemical reactions to magical influences". It had been 5 years since he walked the wide stone halls of the school he once used to call "home". Even if Penderghast had not been his official home, since his parents lived in a mansion in Galdurin, it had been the first place he felt like he belonged... before his father decided that his only son had to finish his studies in the society of Mr. Shayd - one of his fathers business partners who was also teaching in the elite university of Kawath – in Japan.
During the last 5 years he had missed his favorite tree in the school gardens where he used to study on warm summer days when the air in the library became to dense to breathe properly and not even a humidity-cleansing spell would help. He had missed the herboratory where professor Kontos used to teach him some more advanced Satyr knowledge of the natural influences of magical attunements on Beckett’s request. Most of all however he had missed his friends... - hell who was he kidding - most of all he had missed, and was still missing Joane. In these 5 years there had not been a single day where he had not missed her laugh, the way her red hair seemed to draw his gaze whenever she was near, or how easily he had been able to make her blush... She had shown him how to appreciate lazy sunday mornings and the value of friendship. She had filled his life with warmth and love – a feeling he had not known before in his life nor after...
Since he had been forced to leave her, he would often walk aimlessly in the sun to feel nearer to her. Being a Sun-Att he hoped against all reasoning and knowledge, that she would be able to sense him thinking of her. Leaving her behind without further notice had left him emotionally in a very dark and cold place for multiple month before he was able to summon back the emotional detachment that his father had taught him from a very young age. He knew his education and life had cost his father a fortune since he had been attending the worlds best programs held by the highest decorated professors. His name had opened him the doors to every field of study he wanted and everyone treated him with respect... and professional distance. He had lead a lonely life.
He had often asked himself in these years if he had simply been too happy and therefore had not been able to meet his fathers stiff standards. He had loved her too much... and yet had never been able to tell her these few precious words or how much she really meant to him. It was his greatest regret that she would probably never know just how much she had meant to him. So he did the only thing he knew would keep him from despairing. He buried himself, his thoughts and his aching heart in his studies.
He learned all he could about the fine notions of nature attunements and the human genetics in relation to them. He simulated and tested slight variations in RNA code and had succeeded in identifying the genetic predispositions for magick in humans. This had earned him worldwide recognition in magickal science. Even his father had send him a note “Continue the good work – this is what I am expecting of you – Andrew Harrington the Second ”. Beckett didn’t even care that there was no love in his message. His only hope had been to hear from her – since she would perhaps have heard his name in the news... but it had already been more than 4 years...
The first 3 years of his research, he was forbidden any contact with other magickal institutions or people outside Kawath for confidential reasons. Every correspondence had to go through Mr. Shayd himself before it was delivered. Of course he had written to her, explaining himself and his fathers decisions, but he had never gotten a reply. He wasn’t even allowed to contact people via smartphone outside of the organization, since he was working on the highly classified project of identifying the genetic factors for blood Attunements. He was tempted to do so despite the consequences so many times, he even had a hundredth messages typed out, but decided against sending them every time for it would cost him his sponsorship and his father would make sure he never saw Joane again.
4 years into his research, the note he got from his father had been the last time he heard from him. Three month later his father died unexpectedly of heart failure. How this was even possible would always be a mystery to Beckett since he was fairly sure that his father had no heart. He finished and published his works for Mr. Shayd only two month after his fathers death – not caring if he was respecting the proper etiquette of mourning. He even suspected his father would have approved the efficient continuing of his work.
The real reason for finishing his work in Japan however was, that he was now free to choose – without his fathers influence – at which university to write the wrap-up thesis of his research of the last years. It had only taken him a day to request the transfer papers to Penderghast. A week later Dean Goeffe had already approved his request – proud to welcome such a famous magickal researcher back to his roots. What a farce... he couldn’t care less about her reasons, only that he could go back.
It had taken Beckett exactly 5 hours to pack all his belongings and now, a few days later, he was standing in front of the massive metal gates of Penderghast - that would soon welcome the students for their first classes of the day. It was 6 o’clock in the morning. He hadn’t been able to sleep – his stomach was clenching nervously and his heart seemed to remember after all these years how to ache for something long lost.
He hadn’t heard from her or any of his friends for 5 years. Hadn’t allowed himself to magically research her name in the magical information network “Jinx” – too afraid to face his emotions. Now, standing in front of these gates however he remembered... the smell of her – like fresh lemons and mint,... the warmth that melted all his insides when she smiled at him before throwing herself in his arms at the end of a long day in class,... the feeling of her soft lips pressing small feathery kisses on his chest when she wanted to wake him up delicately on a Sunday morning... and what those kisses often lead to afterwards...
Beckett felt his stomach drop. Why had he come back? This was nothing but pure self inflicted torture. He couldn’t even blame his father if this would cost him his PhD – because he was fairly sure he wouldn’t be able to get his brain to work for the next weeks or months if every step he took inside of Penderghast would be filled with memories of her...
Breathing deeply in and out for a few moments he steadied himself and finally pushed the gate open to find his way to Dean Goeffe. She welcomed him briskly and he felt like he had gone back in time facing the stiff women. She handed him his teaching curriculum and the access codes to the laboratories beneath the school building that would allow him to finish his research. As a PhD student at Penderghast he had to teach at least one class for 6 hours a week. Since the teaching staff was always lacking in the more scientific subjects, Dean Goeffe assigned him to teach the graduating classes in evolution of magickal abilities and attunements which pleased him immensely and he found himself looking forward to it.
After this bit of good news however, Beckett found it hard to focus on the Deans further explanations of the school premises – his thoughts drifting back to the first time he had been to the Deans office with Joane. They had known each other only for a few days and he had been a total jerk to her. Being one of few rare Sun-Attuned and thus born with very powerful magick, he thought her a threat to his position as the best student in Penderghast. Meeting her however had resulted in an emotional storm of unfamiliar feelings for him since he found himself drawn to her sharp wit, her natural ease with people and her sunny temperament. She had him disarmed with her smile before he knew what had happened. The detention they had to fulfil following their misbehaviour in class lead to his first real friendship. During the following months, they challenged each other on every occasion. He had a deep understanding of magical techniques and a lot of discipline, whereas she had the advantage of a quick learning mind and vast amounts of raw magickal power. It always felt like they were balancing each others flaws out – magically and socially. He loved talking about his knowledge of the magickal world and his theories, and she would challenge him in this knowledge – learning more about herself and the magickal world in their mutual discussions then during class, where she preferred socialising with her friends rather than paying attention.
A few month and some disturbing events later, they had become more then friends. Even now Beckett found it hard to believe that someone like her had chosen him instead of someone like Griffin Langley – the Penderghast Thief Captain every college girl seemed to admire and fall for.
It wasn't that he thought badly of himseld, he knew that his looks had not been that bad. A lot of girls had complemented him on it since he had practiced Yoga for years and had started swimming in his second year at Penderghast which had resulted in broader shoulders and a more masculine chest. However he had never understood her decision fully but did his best to make her happy.
He had never been able to converse with people at ease about his feelings, his family or his hobbies (he didn’t have any...). This left him always as some sort of outsider – only when he was with her he felt free. Whether she realized it or not, she had always captivated everyone from the moment she entered a room.
His looks hadn’t changed that much the last five years. Beckett now preferred to leave a slight stubble and his cheekbones had sharpened – which resulted in a surprisingly positive reaction from women. He had entertained a few liaisons with random attractive women – always looking for a piece of her in them. None had lasted more that a few weeks. They weren’t her... what would she look like now?
“Mr. Harrington?...” he heard Dean Goeffes voice cut through his thoughts.
Jeeez Beckett get your stuff together – at least until you are alone... He wasn’t the shy teen that had been horrified by the Dean on his first year at school – he had to behave like the adult credited researcher he was... “I apologize Mrs. Goeffe. I am rather tired from the long flight. I believe it would be best if you could show me to my quarters so that I can take a short nap before meeting my colleagues in the afternoon.”
She eyed him suspiciously as if she knew exactly that he hadn’t been paying attention to any of the other research fields in Penderghast she explained to him during the last hour. However she didn’t want to risk offending him, so she continued “Of course! I will show you to your rooms and office. We will be meeting your co- professors after lunch in the library for your welcome. Please follow me.”
She lead him through some familiar and even some unfamiliar corridors leading to the teachers quarters. A few minutes later he found himself blissfully alone. He installed himself on his bed and pulled a few private belongings from his luggage and changed in his now usual black shirt and jeans. He checked his mailbox and read a few business notes but he couldn’t bring himself to focus appropriately since his thoughts kept going back to Joane.
What was she doing now? They had discussed their future plans on a few occasions. She always wanted to gain a deeper knowledge of the complex relations between Sun and Moon Attunements. They had thought they would both have a lot of time left together at Penderghast as PhD students. Had she taken the sponsored PhD offered to her by the Dean a few days before he left? If so was she still working here? Was she now able to use her full power? Would she hate him?...
As his thoughts threatened to go down that dark road again, he couldn’t bring himself to stay in his room. He decided to get some fresh air and check out the gardens and his study tree. Even before he met Joane, that had been one of the spots on campus where he had always felt at peace. Later the both of them would often meet there to discuss magickal theories and Joane would practice her sun-spells. He would thoroughly write down his observations on her spellwork and check them against scientific theories before sharing and debating them with her. She would often despair at his endless questions about the technique she used and the inner workings of her magick she couldn’t properly describe. She used to say she would just draw the magick from inside her heart. Whereas the magick of the secondary attunements would be drawn out of her belly.
Beckett had never been able to understand her reasoning. All the books taught that magick was innate and used a body’s energy but none specified different regions inside a body to draw magickal power from. He had tried her theory himself on numerous occasions but he wasn’t able to produce any magick like that. However, since he was no Sun-Att he didn’t know if her theory could be scientifically founded or if she was simply unable to put her inner workings into words.
Beckett found himself nearly alone in the gardens, since it was already late September and it was quite cold outside. Slowly he gained a little bit of peace. At 10h15 the classes had already begun and only a few students who had decided that classes weren’t all that important crossed his path. He didn’t care, but hoped he would be able to share with his future students the importance and the fascination of his field of study so that they wouldn’t want to skip his classes.
When he neared the tree he was aiming for, he saw a small figure sitting there from afar, reading a book. His heart started beating faster but as he approached her, he saw that the womens hair was long and a dark shade of auburn, not the natural fiery red of Joane’s hair she used to wear in a short bob. She was also wrapped in a warm winter coat. Joane had constantly and unconsciously emitted a warm glow from inside of her, which resulted in her never needing a jacket outside even in the crisp autumn months – like the sun was warming her from within. Even knowing it couldn’t be her, Beckett felt unsteady getting nearer.
It unsettled him that another person would use their spot now, and he walked over briskly. He thought of something to tell this women that would ensure her leaving and not using this spot again. He knew it was ridiculous since this was public space but it was like a last reminder of what he had shared with Joane and he wasn’t able to let this be taken from him yet.
“Excuse me Miss... would you mind leav...” his words died in his throat when she turned up her head to look at him. She was Joane, but at the same time she wasn’t. Her eyes that once sparkled with golden freckles had turned to a chestnut colour. Her skin had lost its glow and she had lost some weight. It seemed like the sun inside of her had been put out.
When she looked up at him, her eyes went wide for a few moments. “Beckett...?” her voice was only a whisper disbelieving but steady and very cold. There was no trace of the warmth and laughter it used to carry. Her voice now conveyed no emotion at all. They stared at each other for a few moments before she blinked and stood up slowly. She turned around and started to walk away without saying another word...
Not knowing what to do or say Beckett let her go. He felt like he had been shredded into tiny pieces inside. This was terribly wrong... What had happened to her during the last 5 years?

G’day Gertie: Star! debuts Down Under
After its global premiere in London and subsequent release to select international markets such as Japan, the Julie Andrews mega-musical Star! made its way to Australia in early-October 1968, fifty years ago this week. Release patterns for films in this era could be a little idiosyncratic, and the Australian release of Star! was no exception. The film was treated to two lavish “preview” premieres in Sydney and Melbourne on October 4 and 8, respectively, but didn’t open to the general public till October 24 with a premiere roadshow engagement at Melbourne’s Paris Theatre. Even more strangely, Melbourne was the only Australian city to screen Star! for the first six months. The film didn’t open in Sydney till 23 May 1969 with other Australian cities to follow.*
The three previous Julie Andrews film musicals –– Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and Thoroughly Modern Millie –– had all been major hits in Australia with Millie and Music still in theatrical release when Star! opened in late-1968. In point of fact, The Sound of Music enjoyed longer roadshow runs in Australia than anywhere else in the world: 181 weeks in Sydney (140 at the Mayfair before transferring to the Paris for a further 41 weeks), and 178 weeks in Melbourne (140 at the Paris, then transferring to the Esquire for a final 38 week run). By 1968, it was estimated that just under half the national population had seen The Sound of Music with more to come as the film entered suburban and regional release (Dale: 15; Keavney: 4-5).
As a result, Twentieth Century-Fox had high hopes Star! would do well in Australia and sent director Robert Wise on a special PR trip to the country to help launch the film. Accompanied by his wife, Patricia, Wise touched down in Sydney on 31 September 1968 where he was treated to a round of civic and industry receptions before officiating at a special gala invitation-only premiere of Star! on October 4 at Sydney’s Mayfair Theatre, home to The Sound of Music for so many years  (“New Boom”: 18). The following week, Wise flew on to Melbourne for the second Australian premiere at the Paris Theatre, another Sound of Music alma mater, on October 8. While in Melbourne, Wise gave a host of press interviews and even helped the Lord Mayor lay a plaque for a new $4-million cinema complex in the city (Messer: 8; see also, Bennett: 14; Musgrove: 2; Veitch: 18).
As with the UK response, Australian critical reception of Star! was generally very positive. In Melbourne, Howard Palmer of The Sun wrote:
“Star! the Julie Andrews epic is indeed one of those films that a critic sees with relief, because he can let his his hair down and quite safely say it is wonderful in every way...Wise has put theatre on the screen better than anyone else before him...Julie Andrews gives the drama of the Lawrence love affairs so well...Add to this the many comic scenes of her early career....and you have a complete actress...It’s a wonderful film not to be missed” (27).
Alec Martin of the Melbourne Truth was equally enthusiastic:
“[I]f Gertrude Lawrence was alive today she would be the first to whistle and  stamp her feet at...Miss Andrews’ brilliant performance in Star!...Miss Andrews sheds her wholesome Mary Poppins and Sound of Music image to play the glamorous, temperamental Gertrude Lawrence with perfection....Star! will be a box-office success, that’s for sure” (39).
Ronald Conway of Melbourne’s The Advocate declared Star! “[a]n agreeable, civilised musical...Julie Andrews sings and acts splendidly and it is a relief to see her in something other than Sound of Music which lasted at the Paris for ever so long...A handsome production to be enjoyed by patrons of all ages” (20). While Kay Mealun of The Australian Women’s Weekly gushed, “I found it rich and big and happy–– could have sat it through, three hours and all, all over again right away” (56).
Not all Australian reviews of Star! were as unreservedly laudatory, though even naysayers conceded the film had charm. Colin Bennett of The Age wrote that Star! “is well set in theatreland and reproduces...a series of splendid old favourites performed to perfection by Julie Andrews who looks fabulous and sings beautifully...But [she] lacks the bite of a Gertrude Lawrence. She is too fundamentally ‘nice’ and tasteful and efficient to be really insolent or bitchy” (6).
In a similar vein, Valda Marshall of The Sun Herald wrote:
“Star! is like an unrealised and long-forgotten musical script of the 30s...a conglomeration of vaudeville numbers, revue material and musical acts...It lacks a central sustaining interest [and] the star herself is without a unified character...Julie Andrews is...in top form. Her voice is as sure and strong as ever. Her acting still has the same unabashed directness and warmth. But the spark of mischievousness and spontaneity are missing” (87).
Charles Higham of the Sydney Morning Herald –– who summarily titled his mixed review, “Julie glitters but she isn’t Gertie Lawrence” –– declared Star!  “a carefully made picture...with fine dramatic moments [but] there is something tame and bloodless about it...Julie Andrews in the title role...brings a brittle professionalism and impeccable coldness to a part that demanded vulnerability, anguish, a maddening neurotic edge. Impossible to imagine this athlete of the musical screen missing an appointment or failing to pay a bill, falling hopelessly and foolishly in love or singing out of tune” (6). Still, Higham mused in another column, “[o]ne hopes Sydney audiences will respond warmly to this very well-made film” (Higham: 19).
And, for the most part, Australian audiences did respond with comparative warmth to Star!. While the film didn’t score anywhere near the record-breaking success of The Sound of Music, it enjoyed respectable theatrical runs, playing in roadshow release in Melbourne for just under six months (23 weeks from 24 October 1968-26 March 1969) and in Sydney for five months (20 weeks from 23 May 1969-9 October 1969), two of the longest roadshow runs of Star! anywhere outside London (Davies: 198. 206; Louden: 6).
Star! also went on to a fairly solid theatrical after-life in Australia. The film avoided the debacle of post-release editing that occurred in North America and the full roadshow print screened in residual first release in suburban and regional Australian markets well into the early-70s. Star! even ran as a 70mm double-feature with Hello Dolly at Sydney’s Village Cinema City in late-1974. The film continued to pop up intermittently in subsequent years in repertory screenings. It played several times throughout the 1970s and 80s at Sydney’s Ritz and Mandarin cinemas. The National Library in Canberra hosted a special archival screening of Star! in March 1980, and the film was given a lavish one-week showcase season at Melbourne’s Astor Theatre in November 1998 to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
Star! was also a frequent feature on Australian TV screens. It made its national small screen debut as the Sunday Night Movie of the Week in October 1973 and was rebroadcast every few years thereafter: 1975, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1986 and 1989. As far as can be ascertained, the first two broadcasts were edited for running time, but most later broadcasts appear to have been the 176 min. roadshow release.
Notes:
* In a sign of the times, the delay of the Sydney release of Star! was due to the unexpected success of The Graduate which had been booked in to the Mayfair, Sydney’s “home” of Todd-AO roadshows. The theatre’s previous roadshow offering, Doctor Dolittle, closed earlier than anticipated and The Graduate was scheduled as a “filler” –– it ended up running at the Mayfair for 11 months (Louden, 6).

The Moors murderers were British serial killing duo Ian Brady and Myra Hindley who killed five children between 1963 and 1965. Three of the bodies were buried in graves dug on Saddleworth Moor near Manchester. Pictured above with the twisted couple is Hindley’s younger sister, Maureen, who was unaware of the couple’s hidden evil. When Maureen was a teenager, she fell in love with.
Harvey Glatman
Harvey Glatman was an American serial killer. He exhibited his antisocial behavior and sadomasochistic sexual tendencies from an early age. Media quickly nicknamed him 'The Lonely Hearts Killer'. Glatman started when he moved to Los Angeles, where he posed as a professional photographer to lure girls into his hotel room with the promise of easy money and work. There, he tied them up, photographed them, and eventually killed and dumped their bodies in the desert.

The photo was taken in an abandoned Illinois barn, where Rhoades killed Walters after cutting off her hair and making her wear a black dress and heels.
William Richard Bradford
Bradford was incarcerated in an maximum security San Quentin State Prison for the 1984 murders of his 15-year-old neighbor Tracey Campbell and barmaid Shari Miller, making them the only official victims. In Bradford’s apartment, authorities found 54 different women in modeling poses. Because he had lured Shari Miller with the promise of a modelling career and took pictures prior murdering her, police have reason to believe Bradford was, in fact, a serial killer and the photos represent the girl’s last moments before their deaths.
Bradford died in 2008, taking the secret with him to his grave.
Robert Berdella
Robert Andrew 'Bob' Berdella was an American serial killer from Kansas City, Missouri. He raped, tortured, and killed at least six men. Berdella was conscious of his homosexuality. In 1984, he started dating Jerry Howell, a good-looking 19-year-old male prostitute. On July 5th, 1984, Berdella invited Howell to his house, where he drugged him with sedatives for animals and immobilized him by binding him to a bed. In the following hours he repeatedly raped his victim, wrote carefully about the process into his diary, and took several pictures to relive his fantasy later. This was the beginning of his torture and murder spree.
Robert Sheldon
Next year, a friend of Berdella, 18-year-old Robert Sheldon, came to stay with him for a few days and found himself drugged and held captive in the basement just like Howell before him. He was killed after 3 days of torture by suffocation.
Todd Stoops
21-year-old Todd Stoops was kidnaped because Berdella felt sexually frustrated at him. The torture he endured prior to his death included electric shocks via a spatula placed across the eyelid in an unsuccessful attempt to blind him. Stoops died due to a combination of blood loss and an infection.

Chris Bryson
In March 1988, 2 years after killing Todd Stoops, Berdella abducted his last victim. A prostitute named Chris Bryson was tortured on the second floor. His narrow escape happened after he got loose from the ties, removed a picture that was covering the window, and climbed out the window. He hung from the gutters on the second floor until they broke and he fell into bob's yard. He ran to a neighbor's house while wearing nothing but a dog collar around his neck.
Berdella made a deal to avoid the death penalty in exchange for a full confession.

Rodney Alcala
The homicide detectives found hundreds of photographs of unidentified women in a storage locker belonging to Rodney Alcala – a convicted rapist and serial killer. The man could be behind as many as 130 murders. Because only a handful of women identified themselves as having posed for the pictures, it's highly likely that some of those photographed were murdered.
Alcala is sometimes labeled The Dating Game Killer, because of his appearance on the television show The Dating Game in the midst of his murder spree. Alcala clinched the dating show by smiling softly into the cameras and saying: 'We're going to have a great time together, Shelly.' Fortunately, they never went on a date. Asunta Basterra
Asunta Basterra (the story has been covered by Bizarrepedia before) was a 12-year-old girl adopted from China by a wealthy and well respected Spanish family – lawyer Rosario Porto Ortega and journalist Alfonso Basterra Camporro. Her adoptive parents reported her missing on the evening of September 21, 2013, only ten days short of her 13th birthday. Asunta was repeatedly poisoned with benzodiazepine-based sedatives and eventually suffocated by her adoptive parents. The motive was greed – Asunta was about to inherit expensive real estate from her grandparents. The photo below is one of the last photos taken by her parents, where she was drugged and wrapped in a blanket.
Madyson Jamison
This is the last photo taken of Madyson Jamison, who disappeared on October 8, 2009 with her whole family. Their remains were found on November 16, 2013. The photo is believed to have been taken by their killer, whose identity remains a mystery.
While there is no proof the picture was taken by a stranger or the killer, the police accepted it as a strong theory. Madyson's aunt claimed she looks to have been in extreme distress and looking towards her parents. There is also a theory the father murdered the family and then himself. Either way, little Madyson has disappeared.
The Haunting Polaroid
Gainesville Serial Killer Crime Scene Photos
In 1989, a woman pulled off the Route 98 (Florida) into the parking lot of a food store and found what appeared to be a polaroid photo lying face down on the asphalt. When the woman turned the polaroid over, the picture she saw was harrowing.
A young woman and a younger boy lie on their backs on a rumpled pile of mismatched sheets and pillows. Both look directly at the camera with expressions of tense resignation. Their mouths are covered with duct tape, and their postures suggest that their wrists are bound behind them. The space they occupy is cramped and poorly lit. The only source of light seems to come from behind the photographer. The photo could well have been taken in the back of a windowless van with its side door pulled open.
The haunting polaroid has a dedicated story on Bizarrepedia. The origin of the mysterious polaroid has a myriad of theories but the children on have never been identified.
Reynaldo Dagsa
