Seun Kuti’s New Flow
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
For Seun Kuti, the challenge, and ultimately the biggest reward, was letting go. African Dreams, his new EP with the legendary Black Thought, is made of remixes of three songs from Black Times, Kuti’s 2018 album with his and his father’s longtime band Egypt 80. The collaboration started during the pandemic, not with Black Thought but with Alex Jennings (aka Molotov), who was working on remixed beats for Kuti. Noticing that the beats were taking shape as more hip hop than Afrobeat, Kuti had the idea to phone the Roots MC and see if he wanted to add verses to them. “Being the big brother that he is, he was super excited,” Kuti told me over Zoom last month. He didn’t really know where they would end up, and honestly, he didn’t have as much of a say as he usually does.

African Dreams album art by Oddhouse
Jennings was the glue, the curator of African Dreams, folding Black Thought’s appropriately revolutionary words into Kuti’s instrumentation and vocals. All of the tracks are much shorter than their counterparts on Black Times. On the title track, Black Thought’s verses are built around samples of the tributary words, “Dream for Africa” and a sinewy bass line, as jazzy saxophone takes the track to its conclusion. “Bad Man Lighter” sports a more traditional verse-chorus-verse structure; Black Thought elevates the song from a paean to weed to a demand for “Black excellence.” “Doing the songs for me was all part of letting things happen,” Kuti said. “I was happy to work with whatever was in front of me. It was about coming out of my comfort zone. Everybody [already] knows what I do.” So, even though Kuti admits he would have chosen “African Dreams” as the first single over “Kuku Kee Me” (“That was my own jam,” he warmly recalled), the EP may not have have taken on any of its free-flowing qualities had he put his foot down.
Working remotely was also new for Kuti, but an experience that gave him new perspective. “What matters is the passion you have about the product,” he said. “It comes through regardless of where you are.” While his experience in 2021 debuting on live TV a performance of Common’s “When We Move” separate from his counterparts in New York was simply “the best we could do at the time,” the experience of making African Dreams, in contrast, seems to have made Kuti even more open to new creative processes. Maybe he’ll do a little more relinquishing the next time he sits down with Egypt 80.

I recommend reading the last 5+ parts first!

Jordan hadn’t realised that she’d instinctively sought the comfort of Leah by grabbing her hand until she felt a soft squeeze. Realising, she dropped Leah’s hand just as quickly as she’d grabbed it and tried to not look at her. It wasn’t too difficult though, as the room in front of them was much more interesting. It resembled the size and structure of a warehouse space, though it was set up for content. There were different areas for interviews, photos, videos, there were different sports brands moving throughout, clothes overflowing racks, and so much more. The pets were great to see –Blu whined from her arms and his head darted around, his eyes overwhelmed and excited not only by the amount of people, but by the pets too. He loved to play, though his stamina was awful. This is one thing she missed most about not having Leah around. Those two were always playing together.
“You’re alright, mate,” Leah calmed as she stroked his head while tucked up against Jordan’s chest with one of her arms. Jordan relished the feel of Leah’s arm brushing up against her chest lightly as she pet him.
“Madness, right?” Beth chuckled excitedly. Of course she was in her comfort zone.
She spotted Viv and joined her across the room.
“Are you just going to keep standing there?” Jen asked in her amused, wondering tone.
Jordan had no idea and so Leah jumped in.
“Where do we even start..?”
Jen pointed across them and to the area set up with tables of food and drink. Standing right in front of it was the person you’d always expect to find near the food. The pair chuckled when they saw her stuffing her mouth. “She’ll sort you out.”
Jordan shook her head and she couldn’t help the smile cross her face as she wandered over to the food table followed closely by Leah.
“Hey, mate.”
Lucy turned around mid-chew. Her eyes lit up as she saw them both. She gulped down her bite and gave them a little hug while she did so, with a pat for Blu. “Hey you two. You came! I really didn’t think you would but YFN knew you would.”
“Of course we would,” Leah laughed.
“What’s happening?” Jordan asked. “You’re usually eating but you look like you’re stress eating at the moment. Feeling guilty?”
Lucy gave a sheepish grin, having been caught. Jordan had known her for so long. “Just a bit-”
Jordan’s expression had her rolling her eyes as she looked over towards YFN. “-a lot. I didn’t expect it to become what it has. I just wanted to distract her so I could organise her birthday next week.”
Lucy’s expression was obvious regret as she watched her. Jordan followed her eyes to where YFN was. She was sitting at a table with piles of paperwork and her laptop in front of her. Sitting next to her was Alex Scott, though YFN was talking to some Lumos employees who nodded and left. She was obviously organising everything and Jordan always loved to watch her in boss mode. She seemed very tired, though, but that didn’t stop the smile lighting her face. She looked over at the trio and her face lit up from its weariness. She waved at the group as her attention was quickly taken up again by someone else.
“Are you hiding?” Leah asked.
Lucy shook her head and grabbed the plates of food she had on the table in front of her.
“Just stress eating,” Jordan laughed as the trio wandered over to join the table.
“I didn’t want… this,” Lucy grunted. “It just got so out of hand. Everybody jumped on board like the tavern dinner.”
“Have you even spoken to anyone about the birthday plans yet?” Leah murmured as they got closer.
“Only a few. I was hoping you two would distract her so I’d have a better chance to. I’ve been hovering because I feel like someone’s going to run into her. Now be quiet about it… oh and don’t mention Ridley.”
The pair didn’t have a chance to question that before they reached the table and instead shared a look. They each greeted the pair at the table and unsurprisingly, Leah fell straight into conversation with Alex from her seat next to Jordan. The pair were close, though never in a way beyond friendship. Truth be told, she enjoyed seeing Leah interacting with her friend.
“I missed you,” YFN groaned into her as they hugged and then acknowledged Blu. “Hi little man. I missed you too.”
“I missed you more,” Jordan admitted as she held her for longer than she expected. She really did miss her friend. YFN held her until Jordan released first with tears in her eyes that she tried to cover.
“Got a bit carried away, did we?” YFN asked as Lucy put the obscene amount of food down in front of her with a kiss to the temple.
“I know you like options… think of it as tapas, little one.”
She rolled her eyes with a smile that only Lucy brought out of her. “That too, but I was talking about you hoovering. I saw you eating your feelings, Luce. Or rather… inhaling them.”
Jordan chuckled as she placed Blu down on the chair next to her and watched as Lucy wrapped an arm around YFN, holding her softly. It seemed Lucy was still very much feeling guilty and protective of her injuries, and Jordan felt a pang of empathy in her chest. She was still so broken, and she could see her wince at each wrong movement, though she did try to hide it. For Lucy’s sake, she imagined.
“Do you need somewhere to stay tonight?”
Jordan felt Leah shift next to her, having heard the question, and somehow, she knew she was listening to her response. Jordan wasn’t sure what brought out the sudden pride in her as she responded.
“Blu and I are actually staying with Leah tonight.” She said, smiling at Leah who paused her sentence just to smile back and share a moment. Enough was enough. Jordan wanted her. She knew that. And although unexpected, tonight she wanted to show Leah just how much she still cared for her. She felt ready.
Jordan turned back to the couple in front of her. Lucy nodded, her eyes flickering between the two. Though YFN was smiling kindly and… knowingly. Like she already knew.
YFN POV
“Sounds perfect.” Silence hung for a second and as she usually did, YFN broke it to keep the conversation flowing. “Did anyone explain to you two what’s happening here?”
“Nope.”
“Okay so Lucy sort of took the opportunity to ask around to get some people interested in meeting up today and introducing them to our company but it seems things have gotten a little out of hand…” Lucy looked apologetic as YFN’s eyes flickered around the room, making sure everything was running smooth. “So everyone is getting involved as much or as little as they like. Before you do anything, there’s our legal team over there dealing with legality when it comes to us posting content et cetera. Then there’s the photography over there… interviews there… tik tok content there… Nike have set up there… Adidas there… there’s several clothing or sports brands set up to promote themselves and find new brand ambassadors but they’re under strict instructions to not approach anyone, I want only the interested footballers to approach them instead.” She looked over to the booths set up. “Though they have been pretty sneaky with their little signs…” she chuckled as she watched one of the sports drink brands holding up a board saying ‘JOIN THE DARK SIDE LJ’ as Lauren laughed from afar. “Food and drink over there… let the lads there know if you want anything and they’ll get it. Lots of hungry women here… and I’ll be doing the pet interviews over here starting again soon, just having a little break for now. Oh and the podcast.”
“So you are starting the podcast?” Leah asked.
“I think it’ll be a great weekly thing to do to keep up with current events and have guest speakers.”
“Thanks for throwin’ my name out there,” Alex grinned at Leah. “I think it’s great. We’ve been chattin’ about it a lot and I think YFN, Jill and I are going to each bring something different to it. We were going to start today if Jill can get here.”
“She’s coming from Manchester?”
“Have you looked around? People are comin’ from everywhere. It’s crazy.” They shared a laugh at that as they couldn’t help but look around the packed room again.
“How did you even manage all of this?” Leah asked.
“Well we spoke to a few of the girls who were over last night-”
“-you mean the whole Arsenal team?”
“Basically. And they messaged around and then it sort of became this. To be honest, I think it was just perfect timing being everyone’s day off and most of the girls didn’t arrive until just before you two. Everyone was sleeping in and word was spreading. I’ve just been trying to stop the bleeding all morning. More food. More table. Backdrops. Cameras. Film equipment. Luckily our staff is so properly vetted – they’ve all jumped in feet first. I was worried we’d be drowning for a second, but everything’s going well…”
“You’re doing an amazing job…” Lucy murmured to her. Her heart fluttered as she leant into her a little more. She knew she’d be sleeping well tonight.
“Thanks, Luce. Thank you for getting everyone together.”
She was saying that for Lucy to know that she did appreciate her effort, and to try and take some of that guilt away of course.
“I’ll give you more notice next time…” She joked half-heartedly.
“I’d very much appreciate that,” she laughed in response as her phone vibrated. She looked down, wondering if it was Joe again, excited with her updates. But it wasn’t. Her eyes widened as she answered.
“Hey… did you get my messages?”
“Sí,” Alexia responded almost normally. “I would like to come.”
YFN had been trying to get in contact with her all morning and had invited her to their little open day of course, thinking it might be a welcome distraction. She never thought she’d say yes, though.
“Okay… um…” She turned to Lucy who took her key from her pocket and gestured to the phone, knowing exactly what she was going to ask. Her Lucy. It was these little things that made her adore her so much. “Okay, Lucy is on her way to get you. She’ll be there soon!”
“Okay. Can I bring Chiquito?”
YFN hesitated. Ridley adored Chiquito more than anything. He was a mini Ridley. Her little man. She’d left him with Alexia which confirmed what YFN already knew. Ridley was completely and utterly in love with her. “Uh… yes of course you can bring Chiquito. Everyone has brought their pets actually. I’ll be doing pet and player interviews if you’d like to but we’ll discuss it when you get here.”
She shared a look with Lucy whose thinking lines appeared on her forehead at the mention of Chiquito.
“See you soon, Blau.”
“See you Ale.”
She hung up and Lucy tilted her head in question.
“She sounds… surprisingly okay,” YFN murmured.
Lucy frowned. So did she. They both knew that was bad. Alexia had shut down her emotions which meant one thing… she would break.
Lucy sighed and leant forwards, her lips finding YFN’s, her hand cradling her cheek. The softest of kisses.
“I’ll be back soon, little one,” she said as she kissed her forehead and stood. “You all look after her, please. She’s fragile and refuses to believe it sometimes.”
YFN managed to slap her hip as she walked away, and Lucy was unable to stop herself from looking over her shoulder at her as she was leaving. She smiled when she caught her eye. It should be illegal to look that good, YFN thought.
Her attention was drawn back to the table at the eyes that were avoiding her. She sighed. “Lucy said not to mention Ridley, right?”
Their faces answered the question.
“Of course she did. That woman… hm. Well, because Alexia is coming, I feel like you all need to know what’s happening so we can all help the situation because I can’t exactly move quickly and people are bound to harass Alexia because it’s… well… Alexia.”
“Did something happen with them finally?” Alex asked.
“You know Ridley?” Leah asked Alex.
“The hot bisexual? Impossible to not when everyone is talking about her. You know how the girls are when a hot new single women enters our world,” she laughed. “And I sort of put two and two together with those photos online of you all at lunch the other day. They looked very friendly.”
“At lunch?!” Jordan asked.
“I handled it…” YFN murmured. “They took them down but a few people know. Anyways… please keep it to yourselves, just take this information and try to make Alexia feel comfortable…”
“They finally did it then?” Leah asked.
“I’m… not sure. Ridley is gone. That’s all.”
“Gone?”
“Gone. There’s a good chance you won’t see her again. She… does this. She doesn’t get close to people. She stopped by last night and said goodbye about 3am. I’ve been awake ever since. Alexia is still in her apartment with Chiquito.”
They didn’t say anything.
“So be kind to Alexia please and don’t mention it… and try to steer conversations away from relationships. They nodded, understanding and already empathising. She saw Jordan look at Leah with longing and then hiding her expression.
They spoke for a little longer, and others came over to the table to chat and introduce their dogs. Eventually, her phone started buzzing again.
“Lucy’s calling…” she murmured, wonderingly. She answered the call.
“Love, Alexia has someone coming from Spain and they’ll be there soon-”
“-i’m sorry,” Alexia cut off, presumably from the passenger seat of the car. “I didn’t tell her to come. I didn’t know she would come-”
“-hey, that’s okay!” YFN responded with a laugh. She wanted Alexia to be comfortable and give her everything she needed right now. It was a positive sign that someone had come to be with Alexia when she needed it. It meant she’d been talking and opening up. “The more the merrier, and more won’t hurt looking around at this place already.”
“You don’t understand. Little one…” Lucy’s voice faded out as YFN realised why they were so nonchalant about the situation. Across the far side of the room, one of the Lumos workers entered, gesturing the new guest inside the content warehouse.
She’d be lying if she didn’t say that her heart skipped a beat at the little figure of Ona Batlle entering the room.

It just occurred to me that the polo scene doesn't get much love as it should. I know it's very short but just the thirst in Alex’s eyes, the way you can see his mouth dry while watching Henry ride that horse and his oh so sexy smile. I feel like that scene required a major dissection, and no one does it better so I came calling.
You know what? I'm doing this one now. I know I said I would do a meta on Henry Fox and I would do a meta on the New Year's Eve party but this is in my inbox now and yeah, let's talk about the polo scene.
(I'm also doing this now so I don't have another thing on my To Do pile, and your kind words made my shitty day a little better so thank you.)
Short scene, not a short meta.
In the book when he and Henry are in his bedroom, Alex has this little moment of clouds parting, sun beaming, angels chorus revelation:
In an instant of sudden, vivid clarity, he can’t believe he ever thought he was straight.
And while movie!Alex doesn't have the same bi awakening that book!Alex does. this is very much his moment of "oh I am very not straight at all" and that is valid of him.
(As this is a Jen meta, we shall also be talking about everything else because you do not analyse a text in isolation.)
This interview talks about the editing of the polo match:
Nick [Moore], my new editor coming in, took a look and he says, “I wanna try something with that polo match.” He spent a weekend of his own time doing something, and then he was ready to show me. He sat me down and said, “I’ve done something crazy.”
And we went from filmed scripted scenes and a lead in, to "bagpipes intensify" and it works SO well for where these boys are in this new stage of their relationship.
Our establishing shots are of the teams, the horses, the uniforms. This is Henry's world and Alex is about to step into it (which is a reversal of Henry at the NYE party - I swear I will write that meta once I have all the gif posts I want to link to) and it's all quick cuts and sharp transitions and moving shots. The pace has been set for Alex to enter.
We pick him out in the crowd but he's lost as quickly as we spot him. He's one of many here and it's all too quick to stay with him.
Tumblr media
Firstly, you will never convince me that he didn't pick the tightest trousers he could find. Henry's comment about him being a mouthful is foreshadowed, right there.
ANYWAY
He walks in, he's looking around, he's doing up his jacket as a form of protection. Alex is the proverbial fish out of the proverbial water (and I have a meta about water if you're interested) and we're straight back in with the quick edits. Horses, polo sticks, this is not a game most people know how to play. Alex certainly doesn't. He's doing up his jacket and he is uncomfortable.
Tumblr media
He is not a stranger to a suit, and that is certainly not something that is ill fitting. It is circumstance, not clothing.
And then we get our first clear shot of Henry. Only it's not clear, not at first. He literally comes into focus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stick aloft, mouth open, like he's a walking riding metaphor.
And Alex's face changes.
Tumblr media
Yeah. He is definitely not straight.
From then on we stay with Henry. We, in Alex's viewpoint, have found him. And so we track Henry through the game and it's just generic horse legs if we're looking at anything else. The only player we/Alex see is Henry.
Tumblr media
Here, Henry is leading. Going in first, checking it's clear, knowing Alex will follow him. Henry leads, Alex follows. Into the garden, into the bed, into the sexual component of their relationship. Alex admits to Henry right from the start that this is new to him:
“I’ve, uh,” Alex begins. “I’ve never actually done this before.” “Alex,” Henry says, reaching down to stroke at Alex’s hair, “you don’t have to, I’m—” “No, I want to,” Alex says, tugging at Henry’s waistband. “I just need you to tell me if it’s awful.” Henry is speechless again, looking as if he can’t believe his fucking luck. “Okay. Of course.”
When it comes to being with a man? Henry leads, Alex follows.
And then the pacing and editing kicks off. We intercut to the tempo of the bagpipes between the match and the hook up and Henry is leading the charge on both.
Tumblr media
He's in charge and Alex is LOVING it:
Tumblr media
Turns out being on the receiving end of Henry’s royal authority is an extreme fucking turn-on.
This is risky and the most dangerous thing they have done so far. Amy walking in on them in the Red Room is one thing - book!Alex is VERY thankful for the staff NDAs when it comes to what they know about him and Henry - but neither of them care here. And Alex is very much letting Henry take the lead and set the pace.
Which, given how long Henry has wanted Alex, wanted this, and how he's not able to live and love (at this point) as openly as Alex is, giving Henry this control means that not only can Alex continue his education in this mlm era of his life, but he's giving Henry all of the freedom he can. God Bless America or something.
We intercut the make out scene with shots of things being hit, the hard slamming of one thing against another, of riders in saddles. The hands may be a metaphor for sex in the Paris scene but we have it here as well.
Tumblr media
Alex is fully on board by this point and he's not letting Henry set the full agenda. In his White House bedroom we got the scene of Henry going down on Alex (and there is no way that it was a one-way exchange given how long they were there) so now? It's his turn.
My favourite editing choice?
Tumblr media
We then cut to Henry's arse bouncing in that saddle. If the Paris scene is making love? This is them fucking. Henry is bouncing away, riding for all he's worth, chasing down his singular aim with precision and determination.
It's innuendo at its finest.
Tumblr media
I love this shot. We're looking up at them - we're just like Alex who is now looking up at Henry due to his new vantage point (#NoLongerTaller) - and we see Alex is fully crowding up into Henry's space. And they are right by the door. There is no cover, no escape. Anyone coming in has fully caught them. Please let there be a PPO or a Secret Service be just outside. Please. For their sanity if not mine.
But even if there isn't for some insane reason, they don't care. They are so lost in each other, so caught up in this moment, that they aren't FSOTUS and the Prince Of Wales. They aren't boys with status and expectations. They're just two consenting adults who are testing the boundaries of what public indecency actually means.
Tumblr media
They are really going for it now. Henry's arm is tensed with the effort of keeping Alex close, his hand is splayed on Henry's back to give him contact with more of him. They are not letting go. Diving all in like it's a nod to the Olympic event where they met in the book.
Tumblr media
And when they come up for air it's because Alex is... well... about to go diving.
Tumblr media
Those fingers make VERY quick work of the belt and what he is doing with his hands and those fingers is further evidence in the "this is them fucking" category.
And then the frame which I'm guessing inspired Cordelia's ask to me:
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THAT FACE. Look at those fucking eyelashes. But Alex is wanting and he is wanting hard for Henry. Pun intended. He's got a plan for this, he's got a To Do list for those Very Bad Things he promised/threatened Henry with all those weeks ago.
And it will have been weeks. The State Dinner was around February time based on the texts (end of January at the latest) and then Henry says the polo match is "next month" (which would put it end of February, early March because we would not say 'next month' if it were next week, regardless of when the month starts) and so it's been weeks since they hooked up in Alex's room. Weeks of having to just text and email and maybe venture into video calls.
None of that would compare to being together.
This is the first time that Alex has gotten his hands on Henry since his bedroom and he's desperate to get more than his hands on him.
Tumblr media
And this shot as Alex pulls Henry's trousers down is fucking pornographic. Matthew López, did you direct Nick to act like this or was it his choice? Go watch his expression as Alex is pulling the offending clothing out of the way and tell me that this isn't pornographic.
And then we cut to the not-at-all subtle shot of Henry well, making the shot. With ease and power and the ball shooting out of frame. Something something orgasm metaphor something release.
Tumblr media
There's even a little wisp as he makes the shot. If this post isn't flagged for mature content I'll be surprised.
Next shot?
Tumblr media
Congrats on not getting caught, on the sex, on the most smut-filled-while-almost-fully-clothed-sex scene I've ever had the joy of frame-by-framing through.
Tumblr media
Alex is doing up his tie again but he's not uncomfortable. And Henry is so fucking happy I could cry. Because he just hooked up with this guy, in semi-public, and got away with it. They are firmly in Henry's world here, a world where he can't be out and proud, and he got to have something he wanted. And, maybe crucially, no one knows about it. His privacy is intact.
But more importantly, this thing he's got with Alex is something. It's not a one night stand. Alex came here specifically for him, because he asked him to. Because Alex wanted to see him, be with him. This wasn't an obligation, this wasn't something set up by anyone for show and to do damage control. This was for them, and them alone.
Tumblr media
Look at these smug bastards. Look at them. Gettin' their rocks off and making puns about being hungry and eating like they didn't just devour each other.
BUT
I gotta bring the feels here 'cause it's me.
Henry attended the State dinner because he was expected to, because that was in place before the New Year's kiss. It was an obligation and in both the movie and the book he had been ghosting Alex. And then Alex grabbed him in the Red Room and they hooked up and at the end of that scene Henry nervously asks Alex if he wants to be his guest at the polo event. Alex doesn't actually say yes - he says he doesn't know how to play polo, there's a comment about it being safer if he's on the sidelines - but leaving aside any fear that he would stand Henry up this is the first time they have made plans with the intention of seeing each other, of being together in this way.
This is, for want of a better term, kinda like a date.
Alex turned up, Henry put out, and they're very much committing to seeing where this path will take them. (Forever. It'll take them to forever.)
Alex isn't straight, Henry is very much in love, and they're embracing that giddy phase of a relationship where you just can't keep your hands off each other. And we fade from this to Paris where they're on another kind of date and then there's another kind of sex scene and it's a speedrun of their relationship on screen like they weren't indulging in foreplay with all the text flirting.
Which, by the way, don't think I didn't notice that Henry's jersey number was 4. Four-play indeed.
(Thanks for this, Cordelia, I needed something like this to soothe my brain.)

i learned that 'Jeopardy!' superchampion and eventual host Ken Jennings won so many games during his initial streak that he admitted to fabricating anecdotes for the show's interview portion just so that he would have something to chat about with Alex Trebek (x)

Saw an "interview" with the Power Rangers Time Force (the characters) today and Jen says she'd like to be locked in an elevator with Alex.
And now I have to write the fanfic where Jen and Alex get stuck in an elevator, start talking to each other and come out as a couple again.

Jack Rabbit being a story about grief and humanity shrouded by what initially looks like a classic hack and slash film is EVERYTHING to me
YES ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I love the idea of it beginning with this classic style slasher opening and then as Alex encounters Rabbit and they have their first meeting it begins to shift?? Alex as a final boy who chooses his fate rather than stumbling or getting trapped into it- but he still gets trapped, in the end. He chooses it and forgets that he already knows how it's going to play out
Also I have this idea of Jack Rabbit as being a duology?? Part one is up until Rabbit's arrest, beginning with the college kids in the woods and ending with Alex leaving the shelter with Baby. Part two opens with two kids meeting on a camping trip in the woods- it follows Rabbit in prison, more openly exploring his past via interviews with Jen and the video tapes Alex had taken?? Alex trying to evade suspicion and get close to Rabbit again, Jen putting together their relationship, the escape, then Rabbit's death,,

REVIEWS OF THE WEEK!
Books I’ve read so far in 2022!
Friend me on Goodreads here to follow my more up to date reading journey for the year!
___
169. The Night Shift by Alex Finlay--⭐️⭐️⭐️
I've been reading more thrillers lately (thanks to the library) and I've been pleasantly surprised by quite a few of them. This one had some great twists in there and I vaguely guessed the conclusion, but I remember thinking "Hm, but would that be too random?" While this wasn't my favourite thriller that I've read this year, I can understand why so many people might enjoy it. It has that great throwback to when video rental stores were a thing, and it has a twisted murder mystery at its core. It also has a badass FBI agent who is somehow working so close to her due date. She's pregnant. With twins. Not gonna lie, I had to suspend my disbelief a little at times as she tried to solve this murder before her babies were due. I will admit that some parts were a LITTLE boring and I may have fallen asleep a couple of times. I think the story dragged at times and was perhaps a bit longer than necessary? Nonetheless, this is a great summer read if you're looking for a thriller to read by the pool (or lake, or beach). I'll continue my thriller reading adventures!

170. The Summer of Bitter & Sweet by Jen Ferguson--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I received a copy via the publisher for an interview with the author. This did not affect my rating in any way! Ferguson hits us with a few emotional punches in this book, so I suggest you go ahead and read the trigger warnings she includes at the very beginning of her book! I really enjoyed this one, even though I was constantly hoping for the MC, Lou, to do the right thing every time she faced a new situation. One of my favourite things that Ferguson mentioned in her interview was how every person who asked her about Lou's choices and experiences at the age of eighteen was an adult. I would love to be able to ask a younger reader who's read this book what takeaways they might have gotten from reading about Lou's tumultuous and traumatizing summer. I absolutely loved how diverse this book was regarding sexuality and race, despite the stifling atmosphere that the story is set in. I loved seeing that as a bit of hope in such a corrupt and racist place. I especially thought it was important to see that this is set in a Canadian small town. Lou's journey to finding her identity was one that I think many will relate to. My favourite moment of her self-discovery is when she finally thinks that there isn't anything wrong with her. That was an especially powerful moment. I loved that ice cream was the sweetness of this book, alongside first love and self-discovery. I also appreciated the exploration of being a mixed teenager living in a world that could potentially treat you differently based on the race you choose to identify as. It resonated with me because it took me years to face my internalized racism. If you want more Indigenous and LGBTQ+ stories for the YA audience (and older--there is no age limit!), then I highly recommend you check this one out. I will repeat my warning from the beginning of this review and highly recommend that you check out the Trigger Warnings!

171. Gallant by V.E. Schwab--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I FINALLY finished GALLANT. Listen, it's not because I didn't like it--in fact, I actually LOVED this book. The writing is gorgeous and Schwab has a talent for really creating that image in your head of what she's describing. I was with her MC the whole way, seeing what she saw and feeling what she felt. This was a truly unique and beautifully written experience. The ending made me want to cry and hug the book. But. My one issue with this book and why I finished it so much later after I started it: It was heavy. Not the content, but while Schwab's writing is beautiful it can also be mentally exhausting. I needed breaks. I needed to step back for a while and read it again and again, chapter by chapter. I don't know if anyone else will relate to this, but this book was taxing on my brain and my attention span. I have friends who binge read this in a couple of sittings and I'm just impressed (they're also friends who didn't really like the book LOL and that's okay!) I know this book can be polarizing. I get why and honestly, it could have gone that way with me too but I'm a contradictory person, so of course I ended up loving this book. I recommend this to fans of the gothic but also the overly descriptive type of writing. For me, the ending was heartfelt and powerful, but I know it was disappointing for some. So, if you're wary of that, tread with care.

172. The Language of Ghosts by Heather Fawcett--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book was both more fun than I was anticipating and had more LGBTQ+ rep than I was expecting! I love that there is another MGLit novel out there that a young reader can potentially see themselves in. I picked this up because one of my best friends read it, loved it, and recommended it. I think this was a really fun fantasy novel that I think deserves both more hype and potentially a sequel. I would love to know more about these characters--although that conclusion was also very satisfying. Fawcett also introduces a really clever argument of how it sometimes takes a monster to defeat another monster. I thought this was fascinating because it slashes that original concept of good vs evil because in reality, that argument is a lot more grey area than straight forward--especially when you consider the people living on either sides of the equation. War can make monsters of people and it is only after the fact that one has to consider if an action was justified or a monstrous act. I loved that argument and I really appreciated seeing it in an MGLit novel. Reminds me a little of how THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD AND EVIL challenges this concept, too. I recommend this one to older MGlit readers and older readers, just because there are some darker themes and scenes of alluded deaths. This is also perfect for that reader who doesn't like fantasy series and just want a standalone!
___
173. Survive the Dome by Kosoko Jackson--⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book was rough and very, very open about its main theme: Police brutality. I highly recommend you read any TWs because this definitely touches on the subject of racism, racial profiling, and police brutality towards minorities. The reason why I'm not giving this a higher rating is because there were some instances where my brain just lost interest because beyond the topic mentioned above, this book didn't really follow the path I thought it would. I wasn't the biggest fan of the MC, but I understood why he made the decisions he made. My rating is also not a bad one. I enjoyed this one for the most part and I think it can be a unique way of looking at the brutality experienced by so many at the hands of the police. What I liked about this book too was how it discussed that this topic often--if not always--extends beyond just the police. Those in charge above the police also have the power to make a change but like in this book, they choose either not to make a change or make things worse. The concept of this book was really cool, but I don't really think it lived up to its full potential. While I enjoyed the book, I think it could have been even better. But I definitely recommend it because of the important and jarring topics it explores!
___
174. Twisted Love by Ana Huang--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You ever just think to yourself, "I know this would freak me out in real life, but I am absolutely living for this being a fictional romance?" Because this was me during those last few chapters where all of the shit hit the fan. I was entertained. I laughed and nearly cried and was slack jawed for several twists and turns. The author truly picked a very fitting title for this book. Ava--girl, I don't know how you do it. The fact that this girl was powerful enough to overcome so much to reach her HEA? Admirable. Even if Alex had his scary moments. The moment where the climax of the story hit (PUN INTENDED BECAUSE THE SPICE IN THIS BOOK WAS REAL), I don't know how she was going to come back from that one. Alex--a hot mess of a broken boy. His story is incredibly sad but he's also highkey terrifying. He's like those mafia men who are terrifying to everyone but their partners. He's like a bull and I didn't know what he would destroy or threaten next. I loved his traumatized broody self. But if I met a guy like that in real life? I don't know. I would be torn, ngl. I enjoyed this a lot, but because it's one of those books that's so over the top it's hard not to just enjoy the ride. I will eventually read the sequel and see where my heart gets taken to next. Highly recommend you read any TW first because this book has some darker themes.

Have you read any of these? Would you recommend them?

NCIS: LOS ANGELES:  "Maybe Today" – Act Three
Fatima is unhappy with the old files.  Half aren't for the Perez case.  The other half are burnt and moldy.  Britney's roommate Jen was arrested five years ago on drug charges.  NCIS was using cassette tapes in 2003.  They are going to use Kilbride's truck in the carport since there were interviews with Baker and Britney's mom.
Alex is back in rehab.  It's going to stick this time.  The two get into a disagreement about Alex choosing to "fold up like a cheap suit every time life got hard" after Kilbride and his wife gave him everything.  Kilbride says he's there to help but Alex thinks Kilbride is 40-years too late.  Alex wants Kilbride to leave – "I'm sure you have a lot of important work to do."  Kilbride leaves.  I could have done without the sad piano in the score.
Callen is still trying to set up Sam with a plus-one.  Daisy, who is great, has no match for the tooth with Baker.  She's looking at others.  Sam like her and Callen thinks of her as Sam's plus one.  Rountree found Kevin Phillips.  He works for a masonry company after doing time for wire fraud.
In Kilbride's jeep, there is a tape of Perez CO downplaying her complaints about Baker.  This takes away Baker's motivation to hurt Perez unless Perez was going to go up the chain of command.
Kensi and Deeks sneak peek.

REVIEW
The Hungry Dark by Jen Williams
Creepy scary compelling beginning to the story with the death of a young boy imminent had me thinking – I might really like this – only to then end up with a shyster family act preying on those who are grieving. As I got to know the Whitelaw family a bit better I kept hoping I might end up liking them…but never warmed to them. The tragic mother, rather dominant overbearing father, the brother that was and wasn’t there for Ashley and then Ashley… Ashley seemed lost and rather mired in nightmares resulting from a childhood event. She may have some paranormal skills – or not – she definitely sees things others do not.
I have to admit that I ended up skimming the book to get the gist of it and did not read it word for word. There were scenes that were dark and disturbing and characters that were worthy of fear and trepidation. There was a myth surrounding the Red Rigg House and its environs but I had trouble believing that those living there would truly buy into it and do what they did.
I am sure that many will love this story and yet either it was not the right time for me to read it or it was not a book meant for me. That said, thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane for the ARC – This is my honest review.

BLURB
Macabre murders plague a rural town as a scam-artist psychic races to find the answers in this haunting thriller from award-winning author Jen Williams, perfect for fans of Camilla Sten and Alex North. As a child, Ashley Whitelam could often see odd things nobody else could: quiet, watchful figures she called the Heedful Ones kept a strange vigil wherever she went. As an adult, she keeps these visions to herself, but she’s turned her taste of the beyond into a career as a “psychic” – parting people from their money with a combination of psychology and internet research. When the Lake District is gripped by a series of grisly child murders, Ashley offers her services to the police for the free publicity. But as Ashley leads the police on a fruitless search around the small town of Green Beck, she catches a glimpse of those old ghosts of her childhood and, following them into the woods, she finds something she never expected: the corpse of the latest missing child. The press fly into a frenzy and the police grow suspicious: either Ashley’s psychic abilities are real, or she is guilty of murder. Hounded by interviews and interrogations, Ashley teams up with Freddie Miller, a podcaster covering the crimes. As they investigate, Ashley realises that there’s no way to distance herself from these murders: whoever or whatever it is that’s haunting the Lakes is haunting her, too. Master of unsettling suspense Jen Williams is back with another chilling, dark read that will draw readers into a gruesome and atmospheric nightmare.

unbreakable
𝓲𝓶𝓪𝓰𝓲𝓷𝓮 - unbreakable
𝔀𝓪𝓻𝓷𝓲𝓷𝓰𝓼 - tears, insecurities, comfort
𝓭𝓮𝓼𝓬𝓻𝓲𝓹𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷 - with the lyrics of shane filan's song "unbreakable" we will see the four male supernatural actors or their partner deal with insecurities, a verse or line or two of the song describing it
𝓪𝓾𝓽𝓱𝓸𝓻'𝓼 𝓷𝓸𝓽𝓮 - lyrics, as always, will be in bold italics and everything else in normal font and in lowercase.
masterlist listen to "unbreakable" right here!
- - -
jensen ackles:
when you lose your way and the fight is gone, your heart starts to break and you need someone around now.
you didn't know what to do anymore. you had lost your way and you had no more fight let in you, your heart was starting to break and all you needed, all you wanted was for jensen to be with you. but, he wasn't able to because he was in vancouver for filming for his show, supernatural. and on top of that, you had been told specifically to not contact your boyfriend unless you really needed him and it was important. so, you had deduced after racking your brain if your mental health was important or not that, you would contact jensen so, you did.
jensen
jens...can i call you?
hey babes, what's up my sexy girl? course you can call me, are you okay?
no, i'm not okay, jens.
oh, okay um, yeh, of course, you can call me!
dial tone
y.n rings jensen
jensen picks up
"hey, darling, what's wrong?"
"i...i need you here with me...but...but i know you're not here and i just..."
"...hey, hey, slow down babe, what's wrong? you sound like you're crying, what's wrong?"
"i don't know, babe, that's the thing! i just...i need you and you're not here!"
"oh, love, you're having a panic attack, did you remember to take your medication?"
"shit...i knew i had forgotten something...no, i...i completely forgot i'm so sorry jens..."
"...don't apologise y.n, it's not your fault! you must have been so caught up in doing something else you could have easily forgotten. it's okay to forget! just take them now, do you have water with you and have you had food in the last couple of hours?"
"yes, i have water with me and i have had food in the last couple of hours, i had a chicken and rice salad actually..."
"...*giggles* that's good babe, i'm glad you had a chicken and rice salad, that sounds lovely,"
"yeah, it was quite lovely actually...umm, i'm sorry for ringing you whilst you're probably busy..."
"...no, y.n, don't apologise, please. in all honesty, we're not even busy anymore and it's actually just me and jared left on set, misha, rob and alex left ages ago,"
"oh, really? i thought you had interviews..."
"...no babe, that's next month but, we talked about you and the rest of the wives coming with us, remember?"
"oh, yeah, we did talk about that, i remember now..."
"...okay, that's good y.n. sit tight alright, i'll be home in the next ten or so minutes, alright? i'll let andrew and bob know and they'll understand completely, besides, we don't have anything else to film today, so, sit tight, and i'll be home soon, i'll text you a white heart to let you know i'm on my way, okay?"
"okay, thank you, babe...i love you and i'll see you soon,"
"don't thank me babe and i love you too, see you soon,"
less than a couple of minutes later and you had received a white heart emoji from jensen, letting you know that he was on his way home to your vancouver apartment and he'd be home in two hours, give or take about twenty or so minutes and you could deal with that. so, whilst you waited for your actor boyfriend to return home, you threw yourself on the couch after you had successfully taken your anxiety medication and turned on the tv, flicking through the channels until you found one that was coincidently playing a showing of your favourite movie, titanic. so, you kept it on the channel, grateful that it had just started its run since it was a three-hour movie, by the time jensen was home, there would still be at least one hour and a few minutes left of the movie for him to watch. even though jensen had at least seen the movie hundreds of times and knew the whole movie script inside and out yet still said in public that he didn't like it. so, with you cuddled up on the couch and the throw blanket and somewhat down from the panic attack you had had during the phone call with jensen, you watched the james cameron movie intently and with your full focus on the movie.
a couple of hours later and you heard the garage door open, even though you still felt shitty and gross from the anxiety and panic attack, you still felt yourself smiling knowing that your boyfriend, jensen was home and you were no longer alone in the big apartment anymore.
your eyes slightly lit up when jensen rushed in, a look of sadness in his eyes as he walked straight over to you, "hey darling, i am so sorry you had to wait so long for me!" jensen whispered as he pulled you in for a hug as you just rested in his embrace, titanic playing in the background
"i don't care, you're home now and that's all i care about," you mumbled softly, tears that you had held back surfacing again as you squeezed jensen tighter
"i missed you, darling!" jensen mumbled back as he hugged you tighter which made you feel more grounded and safe
"i missed you more. thought i was going to implode or die before you came home," you sighed as jensen nodded his head in understanding, he knew all to well what it was like in your head since he had gone through similar in his own mind and seen it happen to jared
"i'm glad you didn't do either! let's sit back on the couch and watch the last hour or so of titanic, okay? you're okay, you're safe, i'm home now and i'm not going anyway again," jensen whispered as you nodded your head
moving back to the couch and throw blanket, thankful it was a tv commercial, you and jensen cuddled under the blanket again and rested against one another comfortably. watching the rest of the movie you two loved the most. and you felt unbreakable and it was all because of your wonderful boyfriend, jensen.
jared padalecki:
just close your eyes while i put my arms around you and make you unbreakable
jared had been inconsolable for what felt like an eternity. he had just been let off by the san antonio basketball team he had been with the last two years because he was told he was too tall to be a professional player for their team. sure, it was devastating for jared since he was being let down from his biggest dream but, it was also devastating for you since all you wanted for your boyfriend was for him to become a professional basketballer and actually live out the dream he had for himself since he could remember. you knew jared would be upset but, you never dreamed he'd be this upset and cut up about it. in all honesty, you thought it was complete bullshit that jared was "too tall", you could have sworn you'd seen taller but also shorter professional players in basketball and that they were just being narky because other players had heard jared run some lines for one of his new acting auditions in the locker room and were paying him out for it. which, was another thing you thought was bullshit, why did jared deserve to be paid out all because he was running lines for an audition and, not just saying them but, running them better than any of the other players could act it.
but that was beside the point, your boyfriend was beyond devastated and crying rivers and you didn't know what you could do to help him or what it was that he needed to stop his cries. that was until you realised, whenever you were inconsolable and jared didn't know what it was you needed, he just asked you one simple question and 99.999 per cent of the time, it worked...
...so, you asked jared the very same question...
"...j, do you need a hug?" you whispered after you had slithered yourself into the dark bedroom, jared hidden away underneath the blankets and bedsheets
with his head peeking out from the top of the blankets, his head nodded with no words spoken as you softly smiled and made your way over onto the bed.
climbing onto the bed and underneath the blankets and bedsheets, you scooched over to your inconsolable boyfriend and pulled him in for a hug as he rested his head on your chest, your hand covering the back of his head and the other arm around his waist. you could just feel jared letting go on your chest, his tears drenching your camisole but you didn't care, it was obvious jared needed to cry until he was crying himself dry. all you did was hold jared as tightly as you could when you suddenly whispered something else to your distraught boyfriend.
"...close your eyes, jared, you're exhausted, try and get some sleep babe..." you whispered as jared nodded his head, sniffling as you lowered the both of you further into the bed
you still held onto jared as he closed his eyes and tried to sleep. the more sleep he was getting, the fewer tears were being cried which made you sigh a breath of relief. you were glad that jared was getting some sleep since the last few nights he'd been laying awake and overthinking and wondering the "real" reason why he was cut from the basketball team. and that was the worst thing about jared being let off from the club, it made him spiral into a cycle that was just purely unhealthy for him and this was the beginning of you getting him out of that cycle starting from this very moment as you held jared tightly as he slept soundly, his face still wet from his own tears that were slowly started to dry out on his cheeks.
just before you fell asleep yourself, at around midnight, you whispered one last thing to jared before you blacked out for the evening, "...maybe because you're such a good actor babe, you should do more auditions and maybe even consider leaving texas for los angeles..."
and, jared heard what you said and, the very next morning, he asked his parents, sharon and gerald, if he could very well do more acting auditions for a little bit and they agreed. loving the idea of their boy doing more auditions, gerald and sharon wondered where that idea sprouted from since it had been days since they had last seen their son smile after being let down by the basketball club but, it didn't take rocket science for both gerald and sharon to figure it out when you were not too far behind.
misha:
she stands in the rain, just to hide it all, if you ever turn around i won't let you fall down now, i swear i'll find your smile then put my arms around you, and make you unbreakable
it was obvious to misha that something wasn't okay with you, his beautiful girlfriend but, it pissed him off that he couldn't figure out what it was. you were standing outside in the freezing vancouver rain and misha was standing just inside the house, the screen door closed being the thing that parted you and misha from each other, even though he could very easily open it himself and make his way over to you. you had just gotten off the phone, misha knew that, except you refused to tell him what the phone call was about or who it was even though it seemed like it was important but also an urgent call since he could hear someone screaming on the other end that basically sounded exactly like one of your sisters or maybe an aunty of yours? he couldn't tell but it was obvious that it was important, you refused to let your boyfriend know and it pissed misha off because just last year, he told you basically the moment his best friend, had died of cancer yet, you won't tell him about a phone call that could have sounded extremely devastating and life-altering? that was something that slightly annoyed misha about you and, saying that was very almost never because he loved you too much but, if he could say that there was one thing that annoyed him about you it was your refusal to ask for help and it drove misha up the wall.
and, it drove misha so far up the wall that, this time, he didn't let you continue this refusal of asking for help and he stormed outside of the house, even with the freezing cold rain and demanded you to tell him what the phone call was about.
"...y.n, babe, what was that phone call about? i'm sick and tired of your refusal of help when it's something as serious as that..." misha sighed, his arms crossed over as he panted out of breath and also tried to keep his body as warm as possible as you sniffled
"...mish...i...i don't want to tell you because..." you trailed off, hesitant to tell misha but, from the look on his face, you realised you were being quite selfish and honestly a little bit stupid for not telling him since all he wants is to help you
"...my sister rang me and, she just told me that mom's dead...her cancer wasn't shrinking like the doctors thought it would and she died in dad's arms..." you whispered, the rain aggressively hitting yours and misha's faces as misha's eyes widened in sadness
he understood why you were so hesitant to tell him, "...babe, i am so sorry...are you allowed to drop into the hospital to say one final goodbye to her? well, do you want to say one final goodbye to her, you know, for some closure, i guess?" misha whispered, moving closer to you as you shook your head with a sad, pathetic laugh
"i don't think i want to see her, mish, that's the thing. how selfish is that? how selfish am i? that i don't want to see my mom for one last time..." you sighed as misha shook his head, you weren't being selfish for not seeing your mom but, slightly unfair for not wanting to tell misha
misha could understand why you were unsure about wanting to say one last goodbye to your mom. it wasn't that she was an abusive or awful mother, no way! your mom was a sweetheart, with her heart full of gold with basically no mean bone in her body. it was just, it had been months since you had seen your mom since her cancer diagnosis and you didn't feel like you deserved to say one last goodbye to your mom. i mean, misha had just gone through this very same thing just last year, with his own best friend dying of cancer and he too felt somewhat of a hesitance to see his best friend one last time but, he just did it because he knew if he didn't, he'd surely regret it later down the line and, he didn't want you to regret not saying one last goodbye to your mom.
"...it is selfish, babe but, no way are you selfish. it's scary saying one last goodbye to your parent but, i promise, if you don't do it, you'll regret it. yes, it's hard, i know how hard it is, it absolutely destroyed me having to say a final goodbye to my best friend last year but, i am forever glad that i did do it because if i hadn't, i would be hating myself for the rest of my life..." misha trailed off, his eyeline filling up with tears as the tears in your eyes slipped down your cheeks as you nodded your head
"...would you be able to come with me, mish?" you whimpered as misha bit his lip and nodded his head, pulling you in for a hug and hugging you ever so tightly
"of course i'll come with you babe," misha whispered as he held you tightly
all misha wanted in this life, in his life with you was for him to find your smile if you ever lost it and give you the feeling of being unbreakable. he hated how the world always seemed to knock you down piece by piece every so often. he just wished you were happier so, he made it his mission to make you smile and happier. and, that started the day you agreed to drive down to the ontario hospital to say one last goodbye to your mom with misha. just grateful that you two were even in canada in general due to filming for supernatural.
alexander calvert:
she finds it hard to trust someone, she's heard the words 'cause they've all been sung, she's the girl in the corner, she's the girl nobody loved
alex couldn't keep his eyes off of her and she couldn't help but hide away in the corner of the room of the san diego comic-con hall h. sure, she thought, he was utterly gorgeous and an amazing actor but, it wouldn't take long before he threw her away for a better-looking, happier and prettier girl because that's what every guy that she's ever thought about having a crush on did to her. even though she thought how stupid it was to think that she'd have a chance with someone as talented and famous as alexander calvert from supernatural, she couldn't help her innocent crush on the guy. and all it took was just one conversation after that initial first glance for the guy to turn his head away in disgust and run away from her. except, this time, it seemed to the girl that alex continued to make his way over to her rather than ignoring her. it was the middle of the new year and supernatural was still taking over the sci-fi world after nearly thirteen years yet, all she was obsessed with was this cute canadian cutie. the way she could tell alexander calvert was a canadian cutie other than the fact she knew everything about supernatural and it's cast, was that she was just as much of a canadian cutie, if not more of a canadian cutie than alex was. that was another reason why no other guy found her attractive because she was obsessed with hockey, the country's wildlife and it's snowstorms and wasn't really into the hustle and bustle of the american city life like the majority of the supernatural cast were.
she tried her hardest to turn her head around the second she noticed alex coming over to her however, it was too late it seemed like, "...hey, i'm alexander calvert, from the cw show, supernatural, and your name is?" alex questioned sweetly, his hand out to shake as she nearly combusted in fear
"uhh...um, y.n, my name is y.n. hi, alex, it's nice to meet you..." she trailed off before almost face-palming in embarrassment as she then held her hand out to shake alex's
"...y.n...that's a pretty name...it's nice to meet you too..." alex trailed off as well as she wondered why he had come all the way over to her when she was in the very corner of the hall h room after supernatural's comic-con panel
"...why did you decide to come all the way over here? it couldn't have been that easy to spot me out of the thousands of other groups of fangirls that would seriously have loved for you to be chatting with them..." she shyly asked as alex giggled, a blush colour suddenly arising on his cheeks
"...i just noticed you're not really from the city, let alone the states. you're a canadian cutie aren't you?" alex questioned as her eyes widened in what she was shocked was a pleasant surprise
"yes...yes i am...how'd you know that?" she tried not to give away too much but, once alex had figured it out, it was obvious to him
"you're not as slick as you like to think you are. besides, you're from canada like me, but specifically vancouver, it's pretty easy for fellow canadian cuties to identify other canadian cuties. besides, your canadian accent is very strong, especially in a room of american people," shane chuckled at the end of his explanation as she nodded her head, the shy canadian girl agreeing that she couldn't be slick at all in front of alexander calvert
"hah, i guess you're right, my canadian accent is quite apparent whilst around american people. but, seriously, why did you waste so much energy talking to me? no guy likes talking to me, they just take one glance and then, by the time they decide to converse with me, i can't even open my mouth before they shut me up with their own voices and then leave after they've deduced that i'm not very interesting for them anymore..." never did she mean for her voice to be harsh or mean but, this had happened every single time she had tried to make conversation with another guy that she even thought could be attractive to her and she didn't want to risk it happening ever again, even if it meant she sounded like a right bitch
alex softened, not at all offended by the girl's outburst and spoke up again, "...because all those other city girls and fangirls wouldn't have wanted to talk to me for me, they would have wanted to talk to me because i'm alex from supernatural or jack from supernatural. whereas sure, you are also a fan and may know every little thing there is to know about me and my castmates, you're not as obvious about it...you don't shout out to the world that you're a supernatural fan and, honestly, me, jared, jensen, misha and the rest of the cast appreciate fans like that just as much as we appreciate our really hardcore obsessive fans, that's why i wanted to talk with you...i mean, that and you are really gorgeous..." alex trailed off in slight embarrassment at the end as y.n's face relaxed and all of a sudden, she felt just as awful for raising her voice at alex then she did earlier
"...oh, alex, thank...thank you, that was very sweet of you to say. i mean, you're really good-looking as well..." she stammered, her arm covering her chest as alex smiled at the girl
"...thank you, y.n. that was sweet of you to say...*giggles* this must be so awkward for you since you've never been asked this before but, is it...would it...could i possibly, maybe over this weekend, take you on a date with me?" alex propositioned and y.n was floored, of course, she was - not only was alex right that she'd never been asked on a date before but, he was nervous as well?
"umm, seriously? like, you're not joking and none of the other boys or cast put you up to this?" y.n just wanted to make sure she wasn't being played with or was the face of a bet as alex's eyes widened and he shook his head
"oh my gosh, no, absolutely not, y.n! not at all was i put up to this, the other guys didn't even notice me staring at you from our standpoint! i don't even think they've realised i've strayed away and walked over to you, i genuinely want to take you out on a date and get to know you more, i truly think you're a lovely and sweet girl and i--"
"--oi, alex! get your arse back over here, we're about to get interviewed for comic-con, where are ya man?" jensen suddenly calls out as alex and y.n giggle, the girl bites her lip and motions for alex to leave
"well, i guess that's your cue to leave then, alex..." she giggled, feeling slightly lighter and happier that she was going on a date with alexander calvert as he smiled
"...i guess it is but, umm, could i possibly get your phone number, just so i can text you or something..."
"...of course, you can, alex," she smiled as she quickly wrote down her name, even though alex didn't need it, and her phone number on a piece of paper and handed it to him
"thanks, y.n, well, i'll see you soon i guess, are you staying for our panel?" alex quickly asks as she nods her head with a smile
"i wouldn't even think of missing it, especially when it's possible that my favourite show is only in the biggest hall of the entire convention...go on mr supernatural, you're needed by your castmates, i'll be here waiting at the end..." she smiled, having a surge of confidence and rises on her tip-toes and kisses alex's cheek at the same time alex was gonna kiss hers, making them both giggle
alex then kisses y.n's cheek after she kissed his cheek and, they parted ways until they'd reunite at the end of the supernatural comic-con panel and they both couldn't wait.
y.n was no longer the girl nobody loved but the girl everyone wanted to be
- - -
this was genuinely so much fun to write but more apologies that some are longer than others and others are shorter. but, that's just the way things happened when i get really invested in one or two of these and make them longer than the other two. i also love shane's song "unbreakable" from his love always solo album so i just knew i had to use it for this one-shot.
ok ily bye xx

The Jen and Alex locked in an elevator together idea <- I am intrigued about this
Around the time Time Force came out 22 years ago, the Fox Kids magazine had an "interview" with the characters. Not the actors, the characters. They called them "pink ranger" and "blue ranger" and it had Ransik's original name still and they made fun about microwave oven taking a whole minute to heat something up.
But they are asked who they'd like to get trapped in an elevator with, and while Lucas mentions Ransik, Jen replies "there's someone but he's gone now". This is obviously Alex (Time Force hadn't premiered when this came out).
So my mind was "a fanfic about his but after the breakup. They get trapped in the elevator as exes and come back out as a couple again, trying to figure out where they are and what comes next but certain that they love each other".
So now I have that in the other back burner.
