Quick Trick Operative (Operative Alternate Class Feature)
Tumblr media
(art by YupaArt on DeviantArt)
And we’re back with yet another uber-simple alternate option for the operative! Be prepared, there’s one more after this.
We’ve established before that some operatives would rather do other things than move fast, so it only makes sense that simple options like this would replace that ability, and this time, it has to do with the trick attack itself.
The trick attack, which is analogous to the sneak attack of the rogue but having different different mechanics, is the iconic attack ability of the operative. It has it’s share of problems, but one that some complain about is the fact that aside from being able to move as part of it, it takes your full-round action to do, more or less limiting you to either dealing extra damage and nothing else and being able to do other actions in addition to attacking, such as using certain items, and so on.
This alternate option seeks to correct that by allowing you to do a trick attack with a standard action instead, with a new stipulation, but we’ll see that soon.
Again, like yesterday’s entry, this could either be personal preference or a differing philosophy of being an operative, one where flexibility and a steady hand are favored over mobility. So let’s take a look!
The alternate ability is exceedingly simple here. Shortly into their careers, these agents can perform other minor activities while performing a trick attack as long as they do not move, effectively taking a standard action as long as their movement action is used for something other than movement.
Much like yesterday, this alternate option is very simple, but effective. Being able to use your move action and still trick attack is a major boon, especially if you’re a gadgeteer build that uses a lot of items, or want better efficiency with reloading a weapon with a low capacity. Honestly the bigger question might be asking why someone would want the vanilla option (mostly melee operatives that need to close quickly and outmaneuver foes).
Again, there’s not a lot of roleplaying advice I can offer on a character that only has such a minor difference compared to other operatives. I suppose they may prefer ranged combat over melee, and have opinions about that. Certainly they would be slightly less athletic than other operatives.
A fancy dining party is interrupted by a crossbolter bolt shattering the window and nearly imbedding itself in the neck of the planetary governor. Everyone takes cover, but the attacker is clearly an efficient reloader, firing again and again. It falls on the party to corner and apprehend this assassin before one of their shots finds it’s mark.
Many shimreen warriors of various disciplines prefer melee combat as it makes use of their innate ability to channel energy, but not Kevrons. Instead he prefers to fight from a distance with a steady stream of precise shots. Even his choice of weapon is curious, preferring projectile weapons to the energy weapons favored by many shimreen.
The party defeated the android assassin sent by the Pilgag Crime Family weeks ago, but the Pilgags are never one to waste a good body. Refitted and reanimated, the mechanical murderer has returned as scrap-enhanced horror known as a razordoll, forgoing all precision they were known for in life for manic, murderous violence.

I really did swear to never have a Macbook again even before I stopped using my previous Macbook. And yet here I am, about to come into possession of a Macbook again.
In fairness to past!me, the main source of consternation for me was that I had to replace the /hundred dollar/ charging cable several times (and would've had to replace it more except I just wrapped it in several feet of electric tape the last time and used it like that for ages) because it would like crumble and disintegrate. And it was only much more recently that I was talking about that and someone mentioned it sounded like there was some issue of improper voltage something or other. Which would make sense given that that Macbook had plenty of issues after I accidentally dumped a mug of hot chocolate on it.
Also I accidentally dumped a mug of hot chocolate on it. And it did die for a while. But then a few months later I did randomly decide to plug it in and it slowly came back to life after that. A clumsy, shambling half-life, but life nonetheless.
And even after that it lasted me something like a decade. Before I finally retired it for good because I got a better laptop to replace it. Well, maybe not "better" so much as "snappier." Which was, in fairness, a low bar to clear by that point considering the Macbook was stuttering trying to play 720p30 videos on youtube.
So yeah hopefully I can avoid spilling a whole sugary drink on this one this time and it can be a smoother decade of use. Especially since I've got a Steam Deck to handle most of my gaming endeavors. So the Macbook can be more of a daily driver, productivity focused device. With some media consumption and whatnot. Which is kind of a lot of horsepower for that kind of thing but I wanted build quality and battery life and Apple devices tend to do well in those arenas. Plus what I actually got was the M2 Macbook Air, and with no fans that means it's not super cut out to do really intensive work anyway, especially for a prolonged period. So it's just as well.
Hopefully it'll be useful for getting back into writing and seeing where that takes me.

Ok, now that you wiped away your tears of laughter, here’s how you can change your web browser and search engine:
- download one of the browsers that put privacy and security first. Here’s a great list. Examples include: Brave, Mozilla Firefox, and for more advanced users: Tor, Ungoogled
- use a VPN. There’s free and paid options.
- change your default search engine to something other than Google. Your online traffic matters. Which websites you load matters. Think of your time and clicks as online currency. Ecosia is a great Bing/Microsoft based search engine that also plants trees with every search! And it gives great results. Another one is DuckDuckGo. Here’s a list of alternative search engines.
Hot tip: the operating systems also collect data whenever you use an online keyboard (and suggested text). Don’t want them to know what you’re typing? You can download a free privacy keyboard for Android (haven’t found one for iOS yet but Apple says the data is stored on device only. Let’s hope so🤞).
Another idea for advanced users: operating systems (such as macOS and Windows) still collect tons of data about you, and cost money if you want to install them on a 2nd hand device, for example. You can use operating systems that are completely free, open-source and user-friendly, such as Ubuntu.
Now go and roam the internet, be free, and donate to open-source programs if you can 😘
