Elio Perlman x m!reader
SUMMARY: What Elio never received, but always wanted and needed in his 17 years of life, you give him in a single day.
CMBYN MASTERLIST
w/c: 1.5k
English is not my first language, sorry for any mistakes.
a/n: You are a man, 1/2 years older than Elio, for me Elio only likes older men 💋. When I say I love Elio, it's because I LOVE Elio, I wanted to kick Oliver's ass and give my baby A LOT of love, as he deserves (I'm part of the Oliver hate club).
a/n: I watched the movie and read the book but Elio's personality feels so real and complex to me that I can't even make him as much accurate as I would like, sorry. I love him so much that I could die.
Tumblr media
AFTER going to the town, Elio returns to his house at dusk. His father, Samuel Perlman, went on another one of his study tours, he would probably return in another two days, Samuel took advantage of the fact that it was close to his and Anella's birthday, so they both went out together.
Elio didn't really mind being alone at home, especially because he told his parents they could go without him, not that he didn't like his parents, but it's good to have some air sometimes.
And by air, Elio means you.
You are like a breath of air, a release, cold water on a hot day, soft classical music on a stressful day, a kiss on the eyelids when you're crying, a breath of wind while the water laps at your feet at night. For Elio, you are like going to the beach, but at night, where it is empty and calm, only the sound of the waves can be heard, while you feel the gentle wind and watch the moon and stars.
But unfortunately you are a man, and so is he. Elio doesn't really care about that, but the society does.
However, he doesn't want to let you go, it may seem selfish, but maybe he really is. He wants you all to himself, he wants to be yours, just yours, desperately.
So, honestly? Elio was just happy that his parents were out.
———☆———
AT THE BEGINNING of Anella and Samuel's first day in Berlin, Elio came to your house.
"[Name]?" he knocks on the door, to which he waited nervously. Not a minute later, you open the door, Elio suddenly wants to leave, but at the same time, he desperately wants to grab you and kiss you, explore your body in every way possible and be loved afterwards.
"Hey, El. How are you?" you smile at him and Elio wants to kiss that smile, but also leave that smile on your face forever.
"Hm..." he hesitates, feeling spontaneous regret and shyness, he felt stupid, "I wanted to invite you to go to my spot, with me" he knows his brain struggled to add an 'it's okay if you don't want to', but it wasn't okay, he desperately wanted some of your air, some of your love. He needed.
Or maybe he's convincing himself again that he needed something he just wanted, but if is not now, when?
But you like him too, don't you? Then you wouldn't mind, right?
Oh no, you don't mind.
———☆———
ELIO AND YOU stopped halfway, at a bookstore. Elio wanted to get some books to read there with you, and you being the sweet man that you are (and because you love Elio), you bought Elio a book, also buying one for yourself, "Find Me" by Andre Aciman.
After leaving the bookstore, you and Elio headed to his spot and within a few minutes, you both left your bikes on the grass. Elio hurriedly took off his all stars and placed his backpack on the floor.
You laughed when he almost fell because of his all star, Elio laughed along when he heard your laugh, but soon took your hand and guided you to the water after you took off your own shoes.
He entered naturally, being completely used to the cold waters of that place, he walked until the water reached below his knees and shorts.
You, not so used to the cold water there, stood on the edge just looking at him. Elio stopped in the middle of the water, looking at you and stretching both arms towards you. Accepting the invitation, you walked over to him, stopping in front of Elio.
Elio maintained eye contact with you, trying in some way to make you understand everything that was going on in his head. When he was satisfied, Elio just leaned in, resting his head on your chest as he closed his arms around you.
You hugged him back and Elio swore he could fall to his knees just from a simple hug.
What a needy boy, hm?
———☆———
IN THE AFTERNOON in that same day, you and Elio lay down on the grass, both wet after a small water fight.
Elio poked your arm and stood up, going to his backpack, he took out the book you bought for him and yourself. He handed you the book and lay down next to you again, but now glued to you, wanting any kind of touch, even if it was just the sides of your bodies touching.
Elio opened his own book, starting to read, while you did the same thing.
After a few minutes of reading, you took one of your hands out of the book and grabbed Elio's hand, taking it out of his book as well, now both of you grabbing the books with just one hand.
Elio squeezed your hand, sighing. You accidentally touched a ticklish spot on Elio when you moved your hands, and that made you put down the book and smile.
"Tickling, Elio?" you smiled wider when he looked at you. You propped yourself up on one of your elbows, letting go of his hand.
He just looked at you, seeming to travel just by looking into your eyes. Then, you started tickling him.
Elio burst into laughter, dropping the book and squirming, he shouted "stop" amidst his laughter. Elio squirmed a lot, more than normal for someone who is just being tickled, and in the middle of this struggle, Elio ended up on top of you, and you stopped your tickling.
It was pretty obvious he had this in mind as he began to squirm and move more. He lay completely on top of you, his weight fell all over you, but he wasn't very heavy.
Elio sighed and relaxed completely, leaving his cheek resting on your chest. You then picked up your book again, reading with him relaxed against you.
Elio felt so complete, but so scared. He felt so good, but bad. It seems wrong, but it felt so right.
However, he shut his brain and felt like everything fell into place now, everything felt right, everything felt complete, he felt good. There was no longer any doubt, he wanted to stay there, just there. With you and only you, and if that were selfishness, he would be selfish with all pleasure. And in the end, his brain agreed too.
Completely at peace, he fell asleep. Oh god, he's so happy now.
———☆———
WHEN Elio woke up, it was already dusk. You left him where he was, however, you turned them sideways.
Elio noticed that you were no longer reading, and when he turned around, spooning, he saw that you were completing some random games in magazines.
“El, you have to go home” you dropped the magazine and Elio leaned his head back, hitting it against your chest, grumbling.
"Why?" he groaned.
“Because it’s almost night” you kissed his forehead and stood up, Elio grabbed you but you just pulled him up with that.
He got up, but threw himself at you, which made you grab his entire body in a hug around the waist.
Elio stayed like that for a few more minutes before accepting and walking towards the bikes. He put on your shoes with you and when he was about to put his backpack on his back, you took it off him and carried it while you sat on the bike.
———☆———
WHEN you arrived at his house, it was already night.
You left your bikes leaning against the wall and entered together. Elio held your hand and led you to his room. You left his backpack on a chair after closing the door and walked over to him.
"...Do you really have to go?" Elio held eye contact again.
"Yes, El, your parents may not be here, but Mafalda is" you ran a hand through his hair and Elio leaned into your touch.
He swallowed and sighed, muttering an "Okay." You ran your hand over his cheek, stroking it lightly and turned to leave, before Elio stood in front of you and hugged you tightly by the neck.
You hugged him back and he almost tried to climb onto you. You tightened the hug and pulled away a little to look at him, but Elio leaned forward again, but now kissing you.
Elio's kiss was almost desperate, but full of affection. After you kissed back, his kiss calmed down. Elio ran his hands over the back of your neck, playing with your hair.
"Elio, I really have to leave" you broke the kiss, touching your forehead to his, "How about we go to the square tomorrow?" Elio instantly cheered up at your words.
"Yes, please," he almost whispered. You rub his back before breaking the hug, leaving only one of your hands clasped with one of his.
You hesitantly let go of each other and then you kissed his cheek with a smack and left his room.
Only after you left did Elio remember that you hadn't agreed on a time. Well, it looks like you're going to have a visitor early in the morning.

It took me several viewings till I realised the way Oliver and Annella partner up in this scene and use Elio's possessiveness to change the dynamic here. When Oliver is showing interest Elio plays coy and mysterious. So then Oliver starts talking to Annella, to which she responds by chiding Elio and praising Oliver. Oliver going towards Annella immediately gets Elio to go after him. Not only is he bothered that Oliver's attention is moving away from him, but Elio is also bothered that his mum is praising Oliver. One can imagine Elio thinking "mine" about Oliver as well as about his mum.
This happens in a much more subtle way when Elio taunts Oliver by talking about almost sleeping with Marzia. (I am certain Annella is just pretending she didnt hear that line.) Annella comes over to Oliver and hands him a cutting from her plant and says 'Smell this'. It's a tiny detail in a scene where lots more is happening but it could be Annella's way of making Elio feel Oliver's attention wavering away from him. Even if that wasnt the intention behind that interaction , it does underline the caring relationship that Oliver and Annella have. In contrast Annella and Marzia have zero scenes or dialogues together (not even when Marzia comes to Elio sitting in the car at the end of the movie). Even Chiara gets an interaction when she comes to see off Oliver, so this must have been very intentional.

Nicole’s rambling: In the defense of Oliver Ulliva and age gaps
Tumblr media
Okay, first let me remind you - this is my POV on the book as a whole. Everyone has their way of understanding of what exactly happened in Call me by your name (the novel) and you don’t have to agree with everything I am about to say - WHICH IS TOTALLY FINE.
Second thing - I’m going to be using translations and page references to my copy of the book - that being the first Czech edition from the year 2018, translated by Lucie Podhorná because it varies from the OG book itself (for example, when Elio talks to Vimini, my copy says "when did he tell you?" instead of "when had he tell her?"; it's just small nuances). Also, that's why I'm referring to Oliver as ‘Oliver Ulliva’, because my copy canonically confirms this being his last name - it refers to his last name being ‘Ulliva’ a few times since Mafalda cracks his egg open.
What made me even wanna write this rant? I don’t wanna in any way talk about the author or the director, or the actors. But... Well, quite a few things - especially the statement that their relationship was predatory since the very begging (simply because Oliver is seven years older) and that it was practically a ‘consensual ra*e’ and... Listen.
1. The Age Gap
Most of these were from the American audience who viewed the movie - but let me explain why Europeans might view this relationship differently and why you might change your opinion about it as well. I am not saying Americans don't do these things as well, but from what I've seen on the forums, etc., it seems to me that European x American view on age gaps is way different.
For the sake of this statement, I interviewed 10 of my European friends - of which were mostly all Czech. Europeans do not see a problem with having a seven-year (and more) age gap between the partners - you rarely find a couple of which both are the same age; three-years being the “standard” gap.
Young people, around 17 - 19, at least in my country, are attracted to older partners for various reasons - some like the intellectual potential of their partner, some are searching for a form of certitude in an older partner having their priorities sorted out and figured out their lives and what they want to do with themselves; whether we are talking about m/m, w/m, w/w or a non-binary relationship. One of my friends told me she searches older partners solely because they feel more protected by them. It's the sense of serenity, a different feeling of connection and different understanding to your other half.
I've talked to four of my friends, who both have partners of the same age or max. 1-year gap and even they told me they absolutely can see themselves dating a partner older by minimally five years. So, it's not a controversial thing here, really.
Maybe it’s more common in here, but rarely anyone frowns upon such relationships. At the time of my first relationship, my first partner was five years older than me - and I honestly couldn’t see myself with someone my age. From my experience, the relationships and bonds have a higher probability to last longer (we had a beautiful relationship of three years), it isn’t only driven by hormonal side of things and such, the feelings can develop into something more meaningful than just simple and shallow lust. More for that matter - most of these age-gap relationships didn't end extra-bad breakups and the partners tended to continue seeing each other as friends.
When I interviewed my friends, asking them about the length of these relationships, it was never less than a year. Usually, they said that they learned a ton of new stuff about themselves and having a healthy, normal relationship than from dating someone their age. So... Yeah. I guess that personal, first-hand experience is what makes us see the relationship for its good and bad, but still assures us not to perceive the relationship as predatory.
Now, you might say that while were living in the 2020s', Call me by your name took place in 1983 - and guess what? It was written in the year 2007. Does that mean something? The answer is - no. My grandma met my grandpa in the 80s' (I asked her about this as well and they have 14 years gap; my other grandma and grandpa met at the end of 80s' and the start of 90s' and they, as well, have 8 years between them) and by this, you can see that the situation is more or less the same as it was.
For all of the above, I can see why Elio fell for Oliver so quickly. First and foremost - he mentions Oliver being older like... Three, four times in a book that has word count 76.996? Elio doesn't care about age - it's a story about two human beings falling in love. It's not trying to research the problem of age and such. Stop judging the story for the wrong reason, ffs.
2. The 'consensual ra*e' argument:
Another thing I've encountered is the audience calling the story 'consensual ra*e'... Let me elaborate and tell you why you're wrong. In America, the age of consent is 16 - 18. In Europe, we have the age of consent established at 15 (the lowest being Estonia with 14) and you are a lawful adult at 18 years old. Given that Elio was 17 in the summer and 18 in November, he was already perceived as an adult; given what were his parents like and what relationship they had to him. (Again, I am looking at the story from today's perspective since the audience did as well). He was a man at the time Oliver came to Italy, he was a man at the time he had sex with Marzia, he was a man when he had sex with Oliver and he was a man when he traveled to Rome.
Elio should be perceived as an adult who carries most of his personal responsibility on his shoulders (since you're more than partially punished for the laws you break from the age of fifteen) and if he decides that he wants to be in a sexual relationship with an older man - he can rightfully do so. Surely, the relationship had another big B U T (for some people) - homosexuality and homophobia. And from the historical standpoint, I don't wanna spend too much time over it. The LGBT movement foundation ties back to 1969; given that Italy was in the capitalistic pro-American part of Europe (Czechia was under the Communist regime at the time, so homosexuality was barbarically punished in my country), I think there wasn't a problem with a subtle, not-too-obvious gay relationship. Sure, you couldn't walk into the open and hold hands and such, but you wouldn't get you beheaded.
Yeah, I mean, I'm not an expert on Italian war history and I don't particularly know what happened with Italy after WW2, but I know that in 1985, first LGBT organization got founding from the republic and from that I assume the situation, especially if it would be a subtle relationship, wouldn't be as bad.
In the story, it is hinted that both Sami and Anella were aware of the whole relationship - I mean, come on. Sami knew (since he had the big speech about being corrupted at the age of thirty, ("I think he's better than me, dad".; "And I am sure he would say the same about you, which both of you makes seem like good people." - Call me by your name, page 221)) and Anella perfectly knew at least in the movie - I mean, the car-ride home? Oh, she knew very well and she even told Marzia at the dinner, IMO.
Now tell me why would the relationship be a consensual ra*e? Because it is not bent to accommodate American laws? Because it not an ordinary every-day relationship? In which way is it ra*e? At the age of 17, you are taken as A D U L T who has their responsibilities to fulfil, at least here in Europe.
3. Oliver didn't love Elio as much as Elio loved Oliver:
... What? I mean... What?
Sure, you are seeing the whole story from Elio's eyes and for that, you are more likely to take Elio's side in this matter. In the end, it was Oliver who was getting married, right? And he was the first one to reach out, right? Well... It was a both-sided thing. At the first few pages, Elio says “"Do you want to look at them? "Not now, maybe later." Polite indifference, as if he noticed my out of place zealous effort to make him like me as he pushed me away briskly."; page 12 and on page 18, Elio states "We started - he must've seen the hints way sooner than I did - to flirt.", let alone that Elio describes that probably, Oliver visited his room while he was asleep.
I can see where the opinion that Elio loved Oliver more could've come from - he was young, hasty and captivated by the entirety of Oliver. Since we see the story by his side, Oliver can seem to be the less active out of the two. But trust me, he loved him the same amount, if not more. This was confirmed by both Sami and Vimini -
Page 92, a conversation between Elio and Vimini, Oliver went to the sea with Anchise:
"Do you know where Oliver is?" "I don't know. I thought he went fishing with Anchise." "With Anchise? He's crazy! He almost killed himself the last time!" No response. She was looking at the sun slowly setting down. "You like him, don't you?" "Yes," I responded. "He likes you too. More than you do - I think." You really think so? - No, Oliver does. - When did he tell you? - Not too long ago.
and page 220, when Sami and Elio talk about their trip to Rome:
"Oliver may be very intelligent—," I began. Once again, the disingenuous rise intonation announced a damning but hanging invisibly between us. Anything not to let my father lead me any further down this road. “Intelligent? He was more than intelligent. What you two had had everything and nothing to do with intelligence. He was good, and you were both lucky to have found each other, because you too are good."
Which obviously shows that both of the people who are indirectly watching the relationship between Elio and Oliver blossom in front of their very eyes are aware that both were very much in love. And Vimini, even if she said 'Oliver does think he loves Elio more', she could see that these two are very much attracted to each other. She was spending a lot of time with Oliver throughout his stay in Italy and she was beyond intelligent - these two were an incapable pair idiots compared to her.
So, no, Oliver doesn't love Elio more; he's just not being as childish about it as Elio is. Once more, the age gap is tying into this topic; while Oliver has his 'hot-headed' days, he already went through the phase of being obsessed by someone (or at least the phase being obsessed and letting the surroundings know). He is slightly more mature than Elio, so he just doesn't let himself go that easily.
And I think that he maybe suffers from internalized homophobia - page 224, Oliver talks with Elio as he comes back for Christmas:
"You should leave then. They (Elio's parents) know about us." "I figured so," he responded. "How?" "By the way your father spoke. You're lucky. My father would have me carted me off to a correctional facility."
In this short piece of dialogue, you can see that Oliver's father isn't okay with LGBT (not too much to wonder about, the American society was different than it is now, it wasn't a safe space for queers). And it's plausible that if Oliver had listened to this as he grew up, he got scared when his mind and body reacted to Elio in this way. We can see that for Elio, he lets go for some time; as they sleep in the 2nd part of the book and visit Rome together in the 3rd part of the book. He tried to overcome the fear and simply because he was in love with the boy, he did overcome it.
But you can see the broken shell (which was tore down in Italy) slowly getting together as Oliver gets back to the USA. He, once more, is under the pressure of American society who is not LGBT friendly at the time, his own father would've never supported his decisions regarding his love life, it could cost him his academic career... And for all of these reasons, it was more logical for Oliver to get married. It was his way of putting order back into his life; it was his way of being good as he says Elio.
So, yeah. Here you have it. Oliver was in love, the relationship could benefit both parties and it wasn't a consensual ra*e, thank you very much.

someone needs to write a fic about oliver and elio being actors, playing lucas and elliot(skam france) and falling in love in the process. Maybe Oliver can be married with two sons? And Elio is reeling after his parents’ divorce?

Been watching CMBYN today for 198866465870980990567-th time. I have the feeling, that Anella not only knew about them and understood, but she'd been actually encouraging Elio all along to develop whatever that he had for Oliver and explore it, right from the beginning. OH THAT PARENTS ARE SAINT!!!!
The Perlman’s are gifts not only to the fictional world, but the real world. We need characters like these to influence others. Call Me By Your Name in general is a film that should be viewed by not only the younger generation but even more so for the older generation who were brought up in a time where relationships such as Elio and Oliver’s were not acceptable. To have parental figures like Perlman and Annella representing this older generation in Call Me By Your Name, I hope it encourages them to wake up and be more accepting.

I apologize in advance, but having read the book and seen the movie now, I'm actually more unsure than before what Mr. Perlman is trying to convey in his final speech (in the film) when he more or less says he wishes he had something like what Elio and Oliver had. Is this meant to convey he has same-sex leanings? Or he does not feel as strongly for Mrs. Perlman as he'd like? The more I think about it, the more confused I get!
Well, in the book, it’s pretty clear what Elio makes of his father’s words: “We’d all heard about his women when he was young, but I’d never even had an inkling of anything else.” So I do believe Aciman wanted to imply that Mr. Perlman could have also been bisexual. In the movie, since Luca wanted to convey a more “universal” message, without gender constraints, maybe, in his mind, Mr. Perlman was just referring to the general regret of not pursuing the “larger than life, once in a lifetime” kind of love Elio and Oliver shared. He does seem very happy in his marriage with Anella, she’s a wonderful woman after all, but there’s a lot nostalgia that emanates from him, so I really don’t know. And I’m fine with not knowing. That’s what makes this story so beautiful.

Appreciation post for Amira Kasar and Annella Perlman.
Amira did so much with so few dialogues* and such little screen time *[approx no. of dialogues - Samuel: 67, Annella: 36]. She really made every dialogue-free second count, whether it be with a look, a smile, or when she whispers in
Mounir’s ear (You’re not gonna give me a line, watch how I still manage to make my character interesting!). In fact where the script specifically says that no one but Elio notices Oliver climb up the stairs as he’s playing the piano - Amira does a head turn and she is on to Elio’s little message of love. I’d even go so far as to say that, if it weren’t for Amira, the Perlman family dynamic would not have felt so close-knit and loving. In a lesser actress’ hands the movie couldve ended up feeling incomplete and CMBYN wouldnt be the film that it is.
As for Annella. We all love watching her as she keeps a watchful eye over Elio. I particularly appreciated these 3 things through my rewatches:
Tumblr media
(1)  that she instantly knows what is on Elio’s mind at this dinner scene. In the script she’s supposed to ask him where Oliver is, but this change definitely makes her more ‘in the know’ from the get-go. On first viewing I didnt get why she talks about having to put up with Oliver, given that she’s actually quite affectionate towards him. It’s only on the rewatches that I realised she’s just tuning into Elio’s mood and not being genuinely dismissive. That dinner table has relatives and friends - people who dont know Oliver - so Annella recognizes that Elio simply needs to talk about his crush and she’s trying to match his irritation. (I also happen to think the parents might’ve already spoken about Elio and Oliver in a deleted scene - just because Samuel’s little cough and the looks between the parents seem based on something we havent been shown.)
Tumblr media
(2) that her response to his nosebleed is not to get him ice but to tell him he is liked/loved. Not mending the body, instead, she’s taking care of the soul. Also, letting him know she’s ok with whatever he decides to do with this ‘liking’.
Tumblr media
(3) that she actually tears up here, that she’s silently, affectionately supporting him, that she makes a stop before they reach home so that he can regain his composure and not enter his home/room all raw and vulnerable, where everything will remind him of Oliver.  A+ parenting if you ask me.

I’m useless at picking favorites. I love all the minor characters in such different ways. Mr. Perlman understands his son with such a soft wisdom through his own untold tragic experience. Anella knows her son with such warmth and motherly intuition. Marzia is a girl who grows to have a compassion beyond her years as she refuses to become bitter in the face of being jilted. They all have such life and vibrancy.
who is your favourite minor character in cmbyn and why?
okay, wow. i love it when i get responses like this, taking the thoughts out of my head but saying them a hundred times better than i ever could. Elio is surrounded by the most loving people and I will forever be envious.
