The pattern pieces are all from le filet ancien from the antique library, just like the athena and frog filet crochet projects. For this one i lined up the borders of one pattern to match with the saytr pattern and removed the excess

It’s free, vintage, (I found things dating to 1835) and there are tons of crafts on there. Literally, what else could you ask for?

daily notes - April 10-11, 2024

Within the next month, I shall be making a drawstring pouch for someone's birthday, and I plan to embroider something on it. Tonight, I dug through a few stashes of fabric. Found a good fabric for the lining, but the outer fabric was more elusive. Perhaps it was where I was digging; easy-to-access places, aka not where the "good" stuff lives.

I wanted to stitch one of the designs from the Talismans pack from Urban Threads, then quilt the design to make it 3D. But I know going that route would require more brain-power than I can afford at the moment.

Instead, I'm going to cross stitch the person's initial as a monogram and do some blackwork designs to fill in the background. It won't be as fancy, but it'll be "my speed". And the more something is "my speed", the more likely I'll get it done in time.

These were the two monograms I liked, from the Antique Pattern Library: blue letters and black letters (search "C-SW004" on the page.

Going that route, I know exactly what fabric to use for that. Gotta iron it, but it's tucked in the folder where I stash my embroidery patterns. How convenient!

ok i fell into a rabbit hole of browsing antique cross stitch patterns on this website and this one in particular looks just like a sundelion from tears of the kingdom... if i was more creative i would think of some pattern to combine the two but as for right now i will simply admire the beauty of this pattern....!!!!

it’s a not for profit that’s gathering books, patterns, and other materials related to crafting that are out of copyright (or getting permission from copyright holders in some cases) in order to share them online. they scan items, clean them up, then make everything available for free!

free things are great, especially when you’re just starting to get into something. like oh, i’m supposed to spend money on this hobby i just picked up 20 minutes ago???

the first time i ended up on the site, i seriously spent hours just trawling through everything. there’s the usual suspects like knitting, crochet, embroidery, but there’s also woodwork, calligraphy, and books on things like how to mount and frame pictures. with cross stitch patterns, they also make modern charts with the dmc colour codes available.

This weekend I have started the rather ambitious project of tatting this yoke from the Priscilla Yoke Book(1916) from the antique pattern library. I'm probably going to change the pattern a bit for my purposes, we'll see how long it takes me to get this somewhere I'm happy with!

I can't believe more people don't know about the antique pattern library! All those public domain, vintage handiwork books and magazines are scanned in pdf format, and FREE TO DOWNLOAD! Languages include French, Italian, German, and English. It just does need to be mentioned that most of the earlier English publications are British, so American users need to make sure to convert the instructions as necessary. Especially crochet instructions, where a British double crochet is an American single. No, I don't know why 🤣

I am making a doily upsized to be a circle shawl. The original pattern is meant to be 37” across, and is from “Corticelli: Lessons in Crochet” published in 1919 by the Nonotuck Silk Company. It is now to best knowledge in the public domain, and I found the PDF on Antique Pattern Library dot org.

The original pattern is for a table centerpiece.

As one might expect, there are some challenges in following a 105 year old pattern. Certain terminology has shifted slightly. Thankfully there is a proper glossary at the start of the book. However, some instructions don’t line up as I would expect. For example, a row early on that instructs to “ch 4, so 2, sc” would, in a modern reading, to leave those two skipped stitches empty and put the sc in the 3rd. A few rows later, though, the stitches stopped mathing out. I ended up having to go back to the supplied pattern image for visual stitch forensics: zooming in, counting the chain spaces, and realizing I was meant to put that sc in the second chain.

Three cheers for math. Anyway, so far here is what I’ve got, on row 12 out of 60.

This morning I thought it was Thursday for a moment and panicked. I never could get the hang of Thursdays, and this week’s Thursday is going to be more of a challenge for me than most.
