Could you expand on why Dumbledore sent the team to the tea party at the beginning, besides to have Newt convey his message to Vogel? Coz I felt it was kinda pointless, they didn't achieve anything specific and it ended up with Theseus being thrown into jail and the long and somewhat unwanted swivel sequence in the Erkstag. I would also love if you would explain Theseus' arc in this film.
He didn't send them for anything else, but I just think that this is a good enough reason. If Vogel had changed his mind they would have avoided the mess. The fact that Vogel was not convinced does not make the mission less important. By the way, if anything it's kinda Albus' fault that the Scamanders failed. Vogel does not dismiss Newt immediately. Henrietta Fischer calls him to make his speech, and by extent to announce that the evidence against Gellert is insufficient and Vogel looks at her with a thoughtful expression, casts his eyes down a bit and turns to Newt and asks if Albus finally decided to leave Hogwarts and do something about the current turmoil. He chooses easy, but if Albus had given him a better alternative he might have taken it.
_________________________
Now let me talk about my boy, Theseus, because I just adore him. Newt's main purpose in being there is so that the group will be granted access in the first place. The fact that ultimately nothing is achieved is the very point. Theseus is the efficient brother, the war hero with a career that is socially appreciated (unlike Newt's), the ministry-family man who is in charge of other aurors. Newt loves Theseus, but he also kind of resents him in the way that a younger brother may feel about the sibling that gets the most attention. We see this several times: The jealousy over Theseus' relationship with Leta, Newt's avoidance to going to dinner, his annoyance at being asked to compromise with the ministry's plans, his joy when Tina takes Theseus out, the way he ignores Theseus and does not bother with introducing him to Lally. Even at Pere Lachese. Theseus gave the right order to the aurors by asking him not to engage so, when one attacked nontheless, the mess that ensued was definitely not because Theseus made a wrong call.
In SoD Theseus, in his desire to stop Grindelwald and having being given a little push by the fact that he trusts Newt's judgement and Newt trusts Albus, decides to put his faith in Albus and to become part of a plan of which he has no control. In fact, he doesn't even have any idea of why he's doing whatever he's doing. The character is thrown in a situation that puts him completely out of his comfort zone.
When they’re at the German Ministry, Theseus is in a very different state of mind than he was at Pere Lachese. There, he had control of the situation and had the rationality to not engage impulsively. This time he is affected by the presense of the people that he was associated with Leta’s death. A shift has already happened in the room and it’s clear that the ministry has allowed Grindelwald the upper hand. If he had stayed in control he probably wouldn’t have ended up in Erkstag. Even when he’s released, Albus mentions the things the others achieved and adds: ‘And you are alive and you are well’. Not only are they at a worse place than from where they’ve started, but he’s the one who has contributed the least. More than Theseus learning to face failure, the events at the ministry are a formative experience because he is failed, attacked and erased by the system that he has so much faith in. He sees the corruption of the kind of law enforcement he has been part of, lead by a head auror that is also young and efficient and whom he’s in first-name basis with.
The Erkstag is another example of Theseus having to push past his comfort zone, but this time it’s in a way that furthers his relationship with Newt. The brothers not sharing common interests other than helping the world reminds me of Albus and Aberforth, with Theseus bring the Albus and Newt the Aberforth of the situation: Theseus is the one with the traditional career and more of a people’s person, while Newt is more comfortable around his creatures, and while Theseus tries to reach out in some ways Newt is holding back. The Erkstag gives us a context in which Newt’s less appreciated experties are the ones that ensure their survival. More than that, Theseus himself has to try to let loose and to follow Newt’s lead, using a method that would otherwise feel ridiculous to him. When the brothers are out, they are holding hands without having realized it and this reflects what the scene brought out in their relationship.
Another interesting part is how Theseus affects Albus’ character. Albus does not talk about the blood troth to everyone. But he needs to come clean to Theseus about his reasons for not joining them and allows a glimpse of his vulnerability to gain trust. Theseus indulges him and he doesn’t back down even when he questions Albus’ plan and feels that it’s not succeeding. This is why it is important that, after Grindelwald’s escape, Theseus is the one to make Albus promise that he’ll stop Gellert. Theseus represents those that put their faith in Albus, those that are putting their own lives on the line and, because of Leta’s death, those who have lost loved ones to Grindelwald. The reason that Albus initially provided for not going after Gellert himself does not stand anymore and he has to do right by Theseus, who trusted him, and by the world.

This time, Grindelwald decided to dress you up personally. As you were a child of glass. He even used his hands to apply makeup. But, you ended up looking like a tacky and flamboyant porcelain doll. Grindelwald sighed in frustration. He used his wand to erase his handiwork. "You don't need makeup anyway, my love."
Speaking of love. You wanted to know where Queenie was. You heard the rumors of her loving a muggle.
Grindelwald took your hand and made you walk towards the fireplace. Next thing you knew, you were standing on top of a great Squarish pyramid.
"There she is…"
You and Grindelwald both turned to see the twisted face of Anton Vogel.
Grindelwald smirked. He put his hand over your shoulder and made you walk towards the Clown faced man.
The man stared and licked his lips. "You are a lucky man, Gellert."
"I know, right?"
Grindelwald left with Vogel and a mean looking Henrietta Fischer to speak. You don't care. It doesn't matter. No one wants you. Especially being pregnant.
You then saw posters of two people: Vicencia Santos and Liu Tao. You saw them from afar during the party. When you tried to jump off the bridge, Grindelwald announced you as your fiance.
Tao seemed arrogant. Santos could be pure…
Oh, well. No one listens to muggles.
You wondered where Credence was doing now.
'He ran away and left me behind.'

Secrets of Dumbledore (Newt Scamander x Female!Reader)
Chapter 3: Berlin
Previous Chapter / First Chapter / Next Chapter
The train pulls up to the station and we could hear a voice over the speaker, speaking in German, about our stop. Newt had kneel down to his case and was petting the baby Qilin. "You're all right, little one." he whispers as we wait for the train to fully stop then he shuts the case.
"Berlin. Wonderful." Hicks said, sarcastically, as she stands up and walks over the windows and Theseus was tying his tie. Kama gets up and walks over to the door when Theseus stands up. "Kama...stay safe." He tells him and Kama just stares at him then walks out.
Moments later, I noticed Uncle Edmund reaching out for Newt's case, which was in Newt's hand, and grabs the handle. "I must be going too now, Newt." He said as Newt turns to him, shocked that he was about to take his case. Newt jerks a bit but Edmund places a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"I know that the case is important to you, my boy. But...No one can know everything...not even you." Uncle Edmund said and Newt looks him over before, reluctantly, let's go of the case. "I promise it will be safe, Newt." Uncle Edmund said and he pats Newt's shoulder then starts to walk away.
"You be careful." I tell them and he turns to me, nods and steps out of the train and walk out on the platform. Kama and Uncle Edmund exchange looks before they go their separate ways, Kama to the left and Edmund to the right.
"Right. Well, here it is." Newt said as he, Theseus, Jacob, Jason, Hicks and I walk up to an alley and towards a wall, which turns into a gateway. We all walk through and it leads us to German Ministry building. We walked out onto the courtyard to see banners of Anton Vogel, Liu and Santos all hanging off of the walls of the building.
"German Ministry of Magic?" Theseus asked. "Yes." Newt and I replied as fireworks go off in the distance. "I take it we're here for a reason." Theseus said as we watch the fireworks. "Yes, we have a tea ceremony to attend...and if we don't hurry up, we'll be late." I said and we start to walk.
The next thing I knew, we were walking in the middle of a crowd, one side chanting for Santos and the other was chanting for Liu, guards were on either side to make sure the people don't fight. I felt a bit uncomfortable, so I reach down and grab Newt's hand and he holds mine tightly.
"Evening...Helmut." Theseus greets as he walks up to man with dark hair and in a suit. "Theseus." Helmut said as Theseus, Newt and I walk past the guards. They started to speak in German with each other and we turn to see they were blocking Jacob, Jason and Hicks from entering. "Hey, hey. They're with me." Theseus said to them and the guards steps aside, letting them in.
"I take it we're not here for the finger sandwiches." Theseus whispers as we entered the large ballroom where there were hundreds of important Wizarding people inside as they drink and eat the said sandwiches. "No, I have a message to deliver." Newt replied. "A message? To who?" Theseus asked and at that moment Vogel had entered the room and started to shake hands with some people. "You are joking." Theseus said, disbelieving. "No." Newt said and we walk towards Vogel.
*3rd Person POV*
"What am I even doing here? Let's go outside." Jacob said as Newt, Theseus and (y/n) walk away. "I'm not very good in these situations." Jacob said to Hicks and Jason. "These situations?" Hicks asked him. "With all the people, the fancy people." Jacob said as Hicks gives him a confused look.
"Don't blame you, Mr Kowalski. I don't feel comfortable here either." Jason remarked. "Surely, you're joking. I mean, I have heard that your mother had thrown parties like these all the time." Hicks said and Jason scoffed at this. "Yes, my mother, who always wanted the finer things in life, including fancy parties...doesn't mean that I liked them. I don't think I ever will, now knowing what she is...seeing this is just bringing up bad memories." Jason said as he gives a hard stare at the people around them.
"I'm sorry, kid." Jacob said as he places on Jason's shoulder. Jason gives him a small nod when an elderly woman walks in. "Hello. I saw you enter the room...and I thought to myself...Edith, that's an interesting-looking man." the woman said and Jacob gives her a nervous smile. "Jacob Kowalski. How are you?" he said. "Very nice to meet you. And where is it you hail from, Mr. Kowalski?" Edith asked. "Queens." Jacob replied and Edith seemed a bit impressed by this.
*(y/n)'s POV*
"Sorry, Herr Vogel. Sorry, I wonder if I could have a word?" Newt said as we come up to Vogel, who turns to us. "Oh! Merlin's beard, it's Mr. Scamander, isn't it?" He asked and Newt nods, slightly. "Herr Vogel..." Newt said and one of Vogel's guards was about to come up to Newt but Vogel stops him then turns to Newt.
"I have a message from a friend, and it cannot wait." He said and Vogel nods and Newt leans in closer to him. "Do what is right...not what is easy. He said it was important that I reach you tonight...that you hear them tonight, the words." Newt tells him and Vogel looked a bit surprised but also a bit annoyed as if to say of course!
"It's time, sir." A woman said then Vogel looks at her then back to Newt. "Is he here? In Berlin?" he asked Newt but Newt doesn't respond. "No, of course not. Why leave Hogwarts when the world outside is burning?" Vogel said and he smiles. "I thank you, Mr. Scamander." he said and he turns and walks away. "Not to make anyone worry but...I've got a bad feeling about this." I remarked, quietly, as we watch Vogel and his people walk off and the woman stares at us for a moment too long before she turns and leaves.
Later, the woman, who was eyeing us earlier, taps at her cup to get everyone's attention. Everyone gathers around and applauds when Vogel comes up. "Thank you. Thank you. I see many familiar faces here tonight. Colleagues, friends...foes." he said and the crowd chuckles at this. "Within the next forty-eight hours...you, along with the rest of the Wizarding World...will choose our next great leader. A choice that will shape our lives for generations to come. I have little doubt that, no matter who should triumph...the Confederation will be in able hands. Liu Tao." Vogel said and there was some applause for Liu, who bows a bit.
"Vicencia Santos." Vogel said and Santos nods as there were applause for her as well.
"It's in moments such as these we are reminded...that it is this peaceful transfer of power which marks our humanity...and demonstrates to the world that, despite our differences...all voices deserve to be heard...even voices which many may find disagreeable." Vogel said and he looks over at us, obviously directing that last sentence towards us.
"Newt. (y/n)." Theseus whispers and Newt and I turn to him. "Any of those lot look familiar to you?" he asked as he jerks his head backwards a bit and we turn and see a couple of familiar faces. "Paris. The night that Leta..." Newt whispers and Theseus nods. "They were with Grindelwald." he whispers then I noticed a familiar face in the crowd.
"Isabella's here." I whispered as she starts to walk among the crowd. I look around for Jason and see that he was with Jacob and Hicks but I could tell he had seen her too as his face was harden and his eyes were following her.
The boys and I split up as we follow Isabella and the other followers of Grindelwald when Vogel's words brought me back to reality. "And so, after an extensive investigation...the Confederation has concluded that insufficient evidence exists...to prosecute Gellert Grindelwald...for the crimes against the Muggle community of which he was accused." he said and I stopped and turned at this as the crowd gasped.
I look over and see Isabella staring at me with a gloating smile that I always hated when she tried to make me feel so insignificant. "He is hereby absolved of all his alleged crimes." Vogel said and the crowd started clamoring in disagreement.
*3rd Person POV*
"Are you kidding me? They're letting the guy off?" Jacob asked, confused, and Hicks and Jacob run off towards the crowd. "I was there, he was killing people." Jacob shouts.
"Well, well, well...if it isn't my little niece. How's that zookeeper of yours doing?" Isabella asked. "He's fine." (Y/n) said, keeping her voice calm even though every fiber in her being wanted to attack her. "So what brings you here? Trying to stop Grindelwald?" Isabella asked (y/n), mockingly, before she laughs. "Though, it seems you have failed..." she laughs. "We will stop him." (Y/n) said and Isabella laughs again. "Oh my, I never knew you had a sense of humor..." she said when Jason comes up next to (y/n).
"Jason?" Isabella said, surprised. "What are you doing here?" She asked. "Helping them." Jason said and Isabella stares at him then glares at (y/n). "You turned my boy against me?" She asked (y/n), angrily. "No, you did that all on your own." Jason said and he grabs his wand and aims it at his mother. "Jason, no!" (Y/n) said as she places her hand on his arm and lowers it.
Meanwhile, Theseus goes towards the followers of Grindelwald and aims his wand at them. "You're under arrest. All of you. Wands down!" he orders but them Helmut comes behind him and knocks him out with a spell. Then he orders the followers, in German, to grab Theseus and take him away.
"Theseus. Theseus!" Newt shouts and this grabs (y/n)'s attention as she sees them dragging Theseus away. "Well, this reunion was nice but it seems I have to go." Isabella said and she walks off.
"Newt, Newt. Not here." Hicks said to Newt, who was about to go after them to get Theseus. "Newt, we don't stand a chance. Let's go. Newt...they have the German Ministry. We've got to go." Hicks said as she drags Newt away and (y/n) and Jason met up with them as the crowd starts to leave and argue.
"It ain't right. That's not justice. Extended investigation. I was there. Were you there? Were you there? I was there. You just let a killer off!" Jacob shouts, angrily, and (y/n) comes up to him and grabs his arm. "Jacob. We have to go." She said but he doesn't move. "Jacob, let's go." (Y/n) said and she leads him away as they leave the building.
Outside the courtyard, Grindelwald's followers then shoot out spells in the sky that turned into Grindelwald's emblem and the crowd cheers at this.
Back in Nurmengard, Grindelwald stands in on a platform, from a staircase, and looks out the window as he watches Credence standing outside with his Phoenix. Then in the reflection of the window, he sees Dumbledore and then Kama.
"There are thousands in the streets chanting your name. You're a free man." Isabella said as she walks up to him. Grindelwald nods, slightly, at this before he turns to her. "Tell the others to prepare to leave." He said. "Tonight?" She asked him. "Tomorrow. We'll have a visitor in the morning." Grindelwald replied and she walks up next to him and looks out to see the Phoenix flying over Credence, who keeps reaching out to it.
"Why does it stay with him?" Isabella asked him, curiously. "It must sense what he's about to do." Grindelwald replied. "And you're sure...that he can kill Dumbledore?" She asked him. "His pain is his power." Grindelwald replied and she nods at this.
