max is blind and can't use her legs so she flies all the time, her back legs are paralyzed. El and max live together and take care of each other.

Max is a really fast flyer and won a lot of races when she was younger, she still flies and the sky is free of obstacles so she can go anywhere while el tries to catch up.

El loves doing Max's hair and uses a different ribbon for each day. Max can't see but she trusts el with her appearance.

Max is a Pegasus and she's a "zoomer":3

El is an alicorn of course, her cutie mark was ruined. It's an eleven. Sometimes, will draws a cutie mark on el when she gets upset about it.

Well, I already made a post about this (here), but I can easily give you new ones.

El is fascinated by Max's red hair. Like, she loves to immerse her face in it, and smell it. Max is flustered, but she lets El do this, because she secretly loves this kind of attention.

At the same time, Max is fascinated by El's powers.

She thinks they are SO cool, and, while El doesn't exactly like her powers, since they remind her of her traumatic childhood at the Lab, she blushes everytime Max defines her as a supergirl.

El is just really flustered by the fact Max sees her powers as something cool, and not as something that makes her a monster, like a lot of other people.

Max obviously reassures El everytime she has those kind of doubts, telling her that she could never see her as a monster.

For Max, El is and always will be the best thing that ever happened in Max's shitty life, with or without powers.

El is shocked, because no one ever said such kind things to her ever, but it makes her at the same time SO glad to have Max in her life.

And, now knowing that Max is impressed and not scared by her powers, El makes sure to never lose occasion to impress the redhead with them.

It works everytime.

elmax: so yk how max showed el the wonder woman comic right, so i was thinking one day after that scene el would have been like “are there any more superheroes like her??” and max would have brought out an entire stack of comics like that and she would show el all of them and el would be like so surprised and happy as max shows her all of them, and when el moved away max lent her some of the comics so she’d have something to remember her by (even though she would never forget about max anyways)

I can't help but notice how El and Max lives are similar to Emma and Regina's;

with El living on that damn lab all her childhood and having every choice ripped away from her, being controlled and abused by Brenner so she could develop her powers,

and then there's Max with a shit family; a father who doesn't care about having a decent job, and instead lives off illegal activities, a submissive mother who always gets abusive boyfriends and doesn't stand up not even for her daughter's safety, has trust issues and self worth issues.

Regina was abused by Cora all her life, never having a choice, raised to become queen, even tho she never wanted it, forced (sold) to marry a man old enough to be her father. Then she was manipulated by Rumple into becoming the EQ so she could cast that curse for him because he was a coward.

Emma lived her whole life alone, thinking she was unlovable because Snow and Charming rather save their kingdom than to have their daughter with them. She spent her whole life in foster care, only having home for short periods, and not all of them were good. She then was abandoned by the person she thought would be by her side because fucking pinnochio told him to.

They all have trust issues, self worth issues, they use sarcasm as a shield, oh, and Max, just like Emma, has a red jacket - it's not leather but still (I just realized it now!)

but deep down all they want is to feel safe, to be loved, someone who understands them and won't judge them, someone who will have their backs...

I think this is part of why I love El and Max so much; they remind me a lot of Emma and Regina but at the same time they are very different from them.

So, here’s a piece of advice for you:

Don’t go on a double date with your brother.

Especially if the person your brother is dating happens to be your ex-boyfriend.

Also especially if the person you are dating happens to be your brother’s date’s “worst frenemy” (their words, not El’s.) 

…

Really, El did not think that date through, and it’s a really, really good thing that the four of them have known each other and have been best friends since middle school. She can’t imagine going on a date with a girl as pretty as Max and having it be as chaotic as this one had been. Though, honestly, El doesn’t know why she expected anything different. 

First of all, Max has always been unafraid to tell people off—especially if they are rude, like the stupid man who was standing in front of them at the restaurant. So, her fight with him came as no surprise at all to El.

(Also, it was kind of hot, but that’s a whole other story.)

Second of all, Mike has absolutely zero filter and the world’s worst resting bitch face. So, when the poor waitress messes up Will’s order and Mike damn near bites her face off, El really, really can’t say she’s surprised.

(God, she’s glad she’s not the one who has to deal with him anymore. She has no idea how she put up with him for over a year. Thirteen year old El was very stupid and suffering from a very bad case of comp het.)

Anyways, despite the fact that Max and Mike get into fights with people at the restaurant and then some arguments with each other, the rest of the double date goes really well. Max and El kick both the boys’ asses at mini golf, and hey, El gets a few kisses from her girlfriend to celebrate. It’s a win-win situation, honestly. 

It is a little bit awkward when Mike drops both Will and El off, though. He’d volunteered to drive tonight since the rest of them have to battle their families for cars, and so, Mike gets the fun job of dropping his boyfriend and El off first and then dropping Max off before he actually gets home. 

So, uh… that’s how El ends up standing outside on her family’s porch, kissing her girlfriend and trying her damnedest to ignore the fact that her brother is kissing his boyfriend in the car a few feet away.

(She’s never doing a double date with Will and Mike again. Never in a million years.)

Eventually, El decides to be the responsible one, and she (very reluctantly) sends her girlfriend away, watching in amusement as Max scares the shit out of Will by knocking on his window. Will looks a little bit exasperated, but he gets out of the car with very minimal arguing.

Mike, on the other hand, starts bickering with Max the moment she gets into his car, and even as the two of them drive away, El can hear the two of them bitching at each other.

… 

Hopefully, they won’t kill each other before Max gets home. That would be very unfortunate.

“So,” Will says slowly, once Mike’s car has disappeared from view.

El raises an eyebrow, turning to look at her older brother. “So…”

“That… sure was something,” Will remarks. He’s fighting a smile and beating around the bush—typical Will behavior. 

“You mean it was a trainwreck,” El deadpans, and Will just snorts. “We are never doing that again.”

“Oh, thank God.” Will breathes a sigh of relief, and he walks over to their family’s little porch swing, all but collapsing onto it. “El, you know I love you and Max, and obviously, I love Mike, but… tonight was—”

“The worst possible thing that we could’ve done?” El finishes.

“Yes!” Will moans, holding his head in his hands. “Have you ever realized we’re practically dating the same person? Like… same person, different fonts, El. I know this whole little rivalry of theirs is just for show, but Jesus, I really thought Mike was gonna end up pushing Max into the water at the mini golf place!”

El giggles, and she takes a seat next to her brother, leaning her head on his shoulder. “Max would have killed him if he did that,” she points out. “And I would have taken a video and laughed.”

Will lifts his head, making a face at her. “Dude, you’ve got to stop threatening to kill my boyfriend.”

“I’ll stop when your boyfriend stops being an idiot!” El retorts, and Will just makes another face at her.

“Don’t be rude,” he scolds, poking her side lightly. “I swear to God, Max is such a bad influence on you. It was bad enough when you were just friends, but now that you’re dating, it’s even worse.”

Once again, El just laughs. “Sometimes, relationships bring out the best in you,” she says wisely, “but other times, they bring out the worst in you. I am happy my girlfriend brings out the worst in me. It’s kind of fun being evil, especially when it gets you and Mike riled up.”

An exasperated little sigh escapes Will’s lips, and he leans his head on top of El’s own. After a few moments of quiet, he mutters, “You’ve really taken this ‘youngest child’ thing to heart, haven’t you?”

“Yep!” El says cheerfully. “It’s a lot of fun. I can see why you enjoyed being the youngest for so long. Sorry you got demoted to middle child.”

Will sticks his tongue out at her. “I hate you,” he deadpans.

“I love you too, Will,” she says, before standing and offering her brother a hand. “Now, come on. I’m in the mood to watch the Reputation Stadium Tour again, and you’re going to watch it with me.”

Her brother just laughs as El pulls him back into their house. There’s a fond, loving smile on his face, and despite their disastrous double date and how their partners are both sort of insane, El wouldn’t change a single thing.

And when Will squeezes her hand and whispers back, “Love you too,” El gets the feeling her brother feels the same way.

Conglomerate ST S5 Theory Parallels:

So, I wanted to make this post for Back to the Future parallels and what I’ve made of it.

(I grew up watching BTTF with my parents, so the trilogy holds a place in my heart. It’s a bit of a “Dad and me” movie, so, when I found out just how much Inspo the Duffers pulled from the movies, I was shocked but also very excited for S5.)

Anyways, here’s a bunch of parallels (and some interesting Will things I’ve found throughout S2 will be brought up, but that is getting it’s own post because it’s a LOT to dive into.)

First up, the Snow Ball and the Enchantment Under The Sea dance:

The color schemes are the exact same.

The one thing I noticed with the Snow Ball that was more interesting to me than anything else in that scene, is the fact that it’s ONLY the second time in S2 that Will and El are in the same building… and here, they are in the same space, but never meet.

After watching S4, we know that the Snow Ball is important. But for Max, the memory of the Snow Ball wasn’t enough to save her from Vecna. She may have been happy then, but ultimately, love saved Max.(platonic or not, no matter your take on it; love was the reason El was able to heal Max and bring her back to life. Now, if her memories are still intact is negotiable.)

Now, I thought about this, and I was wondering why Max’s happiest memory, (possibly being the Snow Ball), wasn’t enough to save her after she hid in the Snow Ball memory. . .

And I thought that, maybe the significance of the Snow Ball, thematically at least, had a few more underlying reasons for being emphasized, aside from possibly hinting at Elmax or Elumax (I’m still not sure if they will do that, but it’s Stranger Things - the subvert tropes show).

In BTTF, Marty’s parents have their first kiss at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance. . . But at the Snow Ball, we have Joyce and Hopper having a moment outside by Joyce’s car, and Will and El are at the dance - even if they never see one another. It’s interesting to me, that El knew Will wasn’t doing well, and she’s just so certain of it when talking to Joyce in the bedroom, but then, later, the kids all go to the dance. I think that the importance of the Snow Ball is that Will, El, Hopper, Joyce, and Jonathan are all there… and it’s very paralleled to BTTF because of the timeline alteration that split their family apart.

Next, we have the Clock Tower storm and The U.D. / the Storm in S2 & S4:

So… this one seems self explanatory.

There’s a storm on the night Marty travels back in time.

There’s a storm the morning after Will goes missing in S1.

We see the storm in S2 with bolts of red lightning, and then we see the storm again in S4. Something that I wanted to point out here though, is that everyone looking out of windows; Lucas and Erica, Dustin, Steve, Robin, Holly, and Karen - they all only see storm clouds… they don’t see the view that Will & the others see. The importance there is that Will is very likely in a Vecna vision… and I think it just culminates at the end. I honestly think that Will and El were Vecna’d at the same time (and I’ll do a post on the blue flannels later, because it’s very interesting, but I need to get the parallels down so then I can add Part 2 of the overall theory)

Additionally, this kind of hints at Will having time powers, because we see the storm following him throughout the seasons. Now, the clock tower is also important because that is a direct parallel to Vecna/Henry/001 and the clocks… but it also parallels Will because of the Williams clock.

Another pretty obvious parallel is Will having a dog in S1 that looks almost exactly like Einstein- Doc Brown’s dog, the dog seems to act as a way of pointing to the weirder happenings in the show in S1, but then the dog is just… gone after S1. I think this parallels BTTF part 2, because Einstein is missing in most of the ‘Bad Timeline’. I think that the tv blip in S1 is the start of the “bad timeline” for Stranger Things; and it only gets worse from there on out.

Because, in the Bad Timeline, Marty’s mom marries Biff. George dies because Biff shot him with a gun. Marty basically becomes Biff’s step son, and his siblings are financially dependent upon Biff to pay their debts.

And Marty has the seemingly impossible task of fixing everything Biff did, which puts us in line with BTTF part 3 where they have to go fix something in the old west (I haven’t rewatched that one yet for analysis.)

And, in Stranger Things, once the timeline is altered:

Joyce marries Lonnie Byers (like Lorraine marries Biff)

Joyce and Hopper can’t remember being married with a family

Hopper dies (just like George dies)

Marty comes to and finds himself in this strange new place, his mom is there, but he isn’t at home- he’s at Biff’s penthouse (this reminded me of Will waking up in S1 - and asking “Where am I?” Because Marty also asks “Mom? Where am I?”)

El is in the lab & then breaks out (compared to Marty’s siblings not being around in Part 2)

The last parallel I wanted to bring up here is the bubble vest/puffer jacket:

This one seems like another obvious parallel… with Will wearing a vest very similar to Marty’s. But I’ve noticed that S2 is littered with extras wearing the same or similar vests, just the same way S1 is kind of littered with vests… I have to do some digging for S3 and S4, but I’ve found the vests most often in seasons 1 and 2. (I will post about this at some rate as well.)

But as far as BTTF parallels go, at least for parts 1 and 2, that’s sort of all have got at this point.

HEY SORRY FOR THE LATE REPLY I GOT DISTRACTED- but now i'm here and i'm so so so ready to tell you my elmax hcs <3 i love them they're like my?? 2nd favorite ship??? they're my favorite girls!!

they have their own secret little code to talk about the guys!! like all of them have nicknames so that way they can gossip about them without them knowing. they're always so confused but never really ask because they think it's just "girl stuff"

they go on double dates with byler. i know. they told me. they go on picnics and watch movies and just love to spend time together <3 max and mike actually start getting along because of that

it's funny because at first they don't tell hopper they're dating because they want to be able to have sleepovers together <33 ofc hopper then finds out somehow and makes them leave the door open 3 inches

they use each other's clothes CONSTANTLY. so much that they actually end up buying stuff together so they can share it!!! the perks of having a gf that uses the same size as you

max calls el every morning just to be the first one doing it because she knows hopper doesn't want to wake up el when he goes early to work!

joyce takes the girls shopping and hangs out with them a lot!! they have their own girl nights and love watching movies together!! they try to explain joyce who's wonder woman and she ends up loving her!

max's mom doesn't know they're dating but loves el!! she thinks she's really sweet and great for max <33 that's enough for max for the moment tbh

max teaches el how to use a skate! after a few tries she finally gets to be able to not fall, but ends up doing it on purpose anyway because she likes when max catches her

el's favorite superhero is probably supergirl and max's is wonder woman!! but they also like marvel, and i think max would love black widow and el's fav would be scarlett witch!

max helps el with homework because she still struggles with some stuff!!

jonathan taught el how to use a polaroid, so now she and max have a lot of pictures together!! el's room is full of them and max has a little corner in her room too

they bought together a notebook where they write letters to each other everyday!! they also use it as an album where they put all of their pics together <3

el now goes to high school with them and she shares most of the classes with max (they always seat together) but when they don't, they always wait for each other to walk to their next class together

they often have lunch with the guys but sometimes they sneak out to eat together alone

max loves calling el "angel" (because, well... ang-el) and el calls her "love". it makes max blush every time.

the party knows, of course, and they're okay with it. but it's really funny seeing their reactions every time el and max are clingy and cheesy because they're soooo done. except lucas and will!!! they're so so happy for them!!!

when robin finds out she practically adopts the girls like- she loves them so much

max always jokes saying she stole mike's girlfriend because she knows it annoys him. although he's literally dating will.

steve is so. damn. supportive. he loves them both like crazy and he can't stop smiling whenever he sees them. like, ofc he's tired of them being in love because he wants that too!!! he's jealous!!! damn kids!!! but he genuinely is so happy for max and el <3

they listen to kate bush together

el makes mixtapes for max because will and jonathan told her it was a big gesture of love (byers gifting mixtapes my fav thing ever) and max literally only listens to them

#1 max tried to teach El how to ride a bike so she wouldn't have ride in the back of Mike's, but she secretly used her powers to keep it from falling over. Max could tell because her nose was bleeding, but she eventually got the hang of it <3

#2 whenever they're just hanging out in each other's rooms, El is always playing with Max's hair and it always makes her blush

#3 while El was in California (post season 3 but pre season 4) she asked will to teach her to draw so she could draw something for max when they visited

#4 when max was writing the letters when she thought she was going to die, El's took the longest to write and it talked about how she'd never loved anyone as much as her and wished she'd said something sooner, because life's too short 💔 she probably decided to tell her as soon as she saw her again after that.

#5 El also wrote a bunch of letters for max when she was in California, but she ended up never sending any of them because she was too nervous 😭

#6 max and El are CONSTANTLY wearing each other's cloths and can barely tell who's is who's anymore (they are literally the only two characters with actual fashion sense)

#7 hopper doesn't know max and El are dating, but sometimes they get so giggly that he makes them keep the door open anyway 🤭

#8 whenever one of them has a nightmare, they radio the other and talk about it until they fall asleep, or just sit there with the radio on and just knowing the other one is there makes them feel better.

#9 max once tried to make eleven watch a horror movie and whenever El got scared, she would burry her face in Max's hair.

#10 Eleven loves watching max play video games at the arcade, max noticed so she got her video game console and taught her how to play (you can decide what the occasion was) now they play video games together all night whenever they have sleepovers 😊

okay. so. i do have a few. however you would not believe how difficult it was so find even these. i adore elmax, but when i looked at my bookmarked fics i realised i had NONE saved that weren’t background elmax. so i scrounged ao3 and still! barely any! most were either crap, or just background which. is not what i wanted. ANYWAY,

a bolt of blue by starlinghue. this one was incredibly sweet - has a little hurt/comfort in there, but honestly it just made me feel warm and happy. background byler (always a win) and takes place the summer between senior year and college.

if we could be lovers by gaps42 was SO GOOD!!! modern-college au and also fake dating au, which is a slay. i seriously loved this, definitely give it a read.

Ah!!!! I love Max!!! And I'm finally home from the movies so I'm going to answer these!!!

I love how Max is still open. She tries so hard to be closed off and to pretend she doesn't have so much love, but she goes to Trick or Treat with them and she continues to talk with them and continues to hold her heart even if she knows that she's going to get hurt

least favorite thing about them

I think that my least favorite thing about her is.....OKAY THIS IS H A R D I think that I don't love her and Lucas in Season 3. I think that both of them are really messy to each other, but that's also bc they're middle schoolers in love and they're silly little messes

Jesus Christ Max's entire arc in season four is something that can be something so personal. Like augh not to get to Personal(tm) but like I know what it's like to have someone die and feel mixed about them dying. When your life gets better and you feel relief that they're gone, but you kind of hate yourself for that. Max being able to overcome and survive (FUCK THE DUFFERS FOR THAT STUPID ASS DECISION AT THE END BTW) like it just means so much to me

I prefer Elmax as best friends. I think that they're really cute as gfs don't get me wrong, but so much of their season 3 arc was both of them needing a best friend and both of them wanting to have someone close to them who didn't have anything they wanted to 'get' in essence. I think like putting them in a romantic light takes away from that beautiful platonic love they have

idk if you noticed the 10 reblogs of the loz byler post in your notes but anyway YES I agree I am a fan. anyway sksw is the most byler coded to me and the one I've thought about the most but as a botw lover first and foremost I ALSO love thinking about that one. BUT. I saw your tags on the og post and you said something about twilight princess? I haven't gotten very far in that one yet so I don't KNOW but I always got the impression that zelda and link (assuminf that we continue to work on the base idea of will as zelda mike as link) are not very shippable in that game? LOL i did notice but you are so valid!! skyward sword is absolutely the most byler coded (i have not played thru the entire game myself #fakefan but i have watched playthroughs) but YES botw is so good!! one day when i don't have a million and one things to write i will sit down and try to work out exactly how to bylerify botw bc i think it would be so fun!

so twilight princess is actually the only game where i don't ship zelink!! definitely a coworker vibe between zelda and link in tht one, however link has a childhood friend named ilia and there's some romantic implication between their connection! she also literally gets kidnapped by monsters and loses her memory and link has to find her and restore it and i think it's really sweet (and obviously definitely pretty byler coded). she is also super sassy like will so i think it's an easy translation! tp link is also So mike coded to me. he plays games with the village children and obviously protects them but he's just silly and goofy and fun and also insane. he switches gears so fast and Will Murder A Bitch when they mess w his crew which is so mike 2 me.

midna is The best zelda companion hands down and is so sassy and zelda in this game is very cool and collected and badass, so i would make max midna and el zelda probably. we love a byler/elmax moment and a madwheeler companionship!

tp is my second favorite game in the series behind botw so i am biased but i do think the canon universe of st translates really well to this game - there's an alternate realm that mirrors hyrule (upside down coded), they use portals/gates to travel between the two, there's a guy who Seems like the big bad but is just being used (mind flayer) and then ganondorf is the big baddie (vecna) revealed at the end of the game. i just think it works really well!!!!!!!!

Even their families fit: Will growing up with a single mom in poverty who loves him, Mike growing up in wealth with a shitty asf dad that makes horrible decisions but Mike would be a much better leader than him-

okay okay okay hi elli. i have thoughts on this, and it's been a while since i've thought about those thoughts but here i am today. to share with you my thoughts. some of them get a little funky weird controversial, so bear with me. (also. i say read all of this with caution if you're still watching merlin, bc i'm gonna try to not spoil too much of it, but i will be hitting on major character arcs that build throughout the show!)

the easy ones. will's merlin. mike's arthur. duh. easy peasy. all the parallels you just mentioned? perfect. literally byler as merthur works so well, and i just know modern byler would've loved this show. like mike starts watching it and gets so excited??? anyways.

i also think lucas is actually more of a mix of lancelot/gwaine, and dustin would be leon (though depending on where you are in the series, you might not have gotten to the point where leon is a more central character?). anyways, i think lucas is a mix of lancelot/gwaine because he has the same moral righteous and kindness of lancelot, but is definitely more brash like gwaine (love my boy planning to storm fucking hnl by himself lol). with dustin, leon's a very level-headed character, also arthur's second in command for later seasons with the knights, and so i think it fits with how mike and dustin are both the planners and dustin sorta steps up to help lead in mike's absence in s4!

now for the girls. so, i've gone back and forth on this, because for obvious reasons, the el/gwen parallel works because of the merlin/arthur/gwen and will/mike/el love triangle. like that's the most obvious interpretation of this. but then, as i was thinking about it (and honestly i was wandering down this rabbit hole while writing my merlin byler fic lmao), i was trying to think about where el having powers and just willel in general would fit into all of this?

so i started thinking about el/morgana, which then would um. make max/gwen. (i'll come back to that in a second, let me explain el/morgana first.) i'm just thinking about how morgana is one of the most powerful sorcerers we see in the show and how morgana and merlin are foils to each other. i think there's an episode that calls morgana the darkness to merlin's light. so like yes, merlin and arthur are two sides of the same coin and have their shared destiny, but likewise, morgana has always been that third part of their destiny (which is so fun once you explore the ancient religions and stuff this show loosely pulls inspiration from, because three is kind of a big number) in that she is connected to merlin.

so you think about willelmike, right? and obviously, el is our hero and protagonist of the show, so she's not gonna end up turning bad unlike morgana. but in the context of thinking about a merlin x st crossover, how interesting would it be if el did turn evil? because in st, we see this is a back and forth conversation el has with herself - is she the monster? is she good? or is she bad?

and i think about an el who actually did go with henry when prompted to in the lab. an el whose moral code would be shaped and manipulated by someone with an ulterior motive, someone who recognizes her power. because that, in my opinion, is what happened to morgana with morgause. morgana was terrified and alone because she had this secret which could get her killed, and morgause was the first to show that her magic could be good. so she trusted morgause and went spiraling down a path that led her to destruction because of how morgause manipulated her into thinking. i don't think morgana was ever inherently evil. i think the fear and manipulation motivated her and morphed into anger and a desire for revenge, because this poor woman was alone for so much of her story.

so, when i'm imagining a merlin x st au, i am imagining henry would take that morgause role. if we're following merlin canon, will and el never learn about each other's magic and spend their character arcs alone and motivated by fear, when they really could've found solace and love and acceptance in each other. if we're not following merlin canon, will decides not to be an idiot? and he tells el about his magic? and they become magic twins together, and look, el grew up as mike's sister essentially, so then will's basically her brother in law.

(also. the platonic elmike sibling vibes crack me up. like all the canon st jokes about how they're so family coded? that right there. merlin vibes. they're family. no dating your sister.)

anyways, so that then defaults us to having max as gwen, which i think would change her character a little bit. maybe instead of a romance between max and mike, it's more that sort of friendship that gwen and arthur do develop, because max challenges mike to be better and brings out the good parts of him - the parts that care about justice and about his people and about doing the right thing. and so mike, kind of feeling forced into having a queen because ya know. laws of the land and stuff, very tentatively asks max if she would ever consider stepping into that role because he believes she would be an excellent leader. and so that's when the engagement happens and stuff and it's for show for the people, and only like. will and max and mike and dustin know that obviously. and then through whatever circumstances, the engagement ends up called off, and unlike in merlin canon, it doesn't end up happening again, and max just becomes an advisor to mike, who remains single as a king until. ya know. magic is legalized and he marries will (not following canon lol. or he dies. and i cry again.

summary: when richie joins the hellfire club, eddie kaspbrak can’t help but wonder why he’s so bothered by this. especially why he’s so bothered by richie’s budding friendship with eddie munson.

eddie kaspbrak couldn’t help but glare across the lunch table as he picked at his inedible school food. 

does this kid ever shut up? he thought to himself, as eddie munson yelled something crude across the cafeteria to the basketball team, making everyone at the lunch table crack up, but especially richie.

eddie kaspbrak couldn’t quite explain why he hated eddie munson so much. since getting to high school, richie, his twin brother mike, and many of their other friends had joined the hellfire club, a group for d&d. eddie wasn’t a d&d person himself, but out of their entire friend group, only him, mike hanlon, max, and el didn’t play. granted, some of the group members didn’t understand what they were doing, but they played nonetheless. eddie, however, really didn’t understand the hype over the game. plus, he really didn’t want to spend any more time with eddie munson than he did already.

eddie munson was a stoner. he had been held back god knows how many times and it didn’t seem like this year was going to be any more successful for him. he was loud, annoying, and grunge. he wasn’t the type of loud, annoying, yet somehow charismatic that richie was. he just pissed people off.

“FUCK YEAH, GIVE IT HERE!”

eddie was suddenly shook out of his thoughts by richie shouting and reaching for a lunch tray in the middle of the table, which had 7 chocolate milks on it.

“dude, you’re gonna puke!”

“i need my strength for the campaign tonight!” richie insisted with a laugh. he immediately started opening the chocolate milks and chugging them. eddie, not in the mood for this crowd anymore, rolled his eyes and got up from the table, going to dump his tray. after he was done getting rid of his uneaten slop, he made a beeline for the bathroom and locked himself in one of the stalls.

a few minutes later, the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, but eddie couldn’t care less. maybe if he stayed in the stall long enough, the combined smell of weed and shit would be enough to send him home sick. before he could think any more about that plan, however, the door banged open and two familiar voices echoed.

“dude, her class is a fucking buzzkill, i know.”

eddie groaned internally. it was eddie munson.

“listen, when you go to her class high for the first time, you’ll never want to go sober again,” he insisted. the other voice laughed before speaking.

“i never wanted to go to her class sober in the first place, i just didn’t have a hookup on school grounds.”

it was richie. eddie sighed and unlocked the door to the stall. as much as he didn’t want to see them, he didn’t want to smell pot more.

“well, look who it is!” eddie munson called out as eddie kaspbrak came out of the stall. “we were just about to light up, want to join in, little fella?”

“no,” eddie mumbled, shoving past without looking at either of them.

“eds!” richie said. “don’t go yet!”

eddie stopped right at the door and turned around, rolling his eyes and hating himself for loving this boy so much.

“that’s not my name,” he said. “and what do you want?”

“jesus christ, someone’s a little testy today,” eddie munson muttered, but eddie kaspbrak ignored him.

“he’s always like that,” richie said, continuing to stare at eddie kaspbrak with a loving grin. “anyway, eds. you should come to the campaign tonight.”

“no way,” eddie said, immediately turning back around. richie tried to get him to do this EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. but it never worked. as much as eddie wanted to spend time with richie, he could not stand being around eddie munson for that long, watching his friends play some long and boring game that he didn’t even understand.

“aw, come on, eds!” richie insisted. “you can shadow me! i’ll teach you everything i know,” he added with a wink.

eddie, however, refused to turn back around. “i’ll think about it,” he mumbled, pushing the door open and heading to his next class.

eddie hated the thought of spending his night like that. but he hated the thought of richie spending that much time with eddie munson without him there even more. maybe it was stupid, but eddie had this burning need to be the better eddie in richie’s life. i mean, the two had been best friends for forever. what did this loud-ass have that eddie didn’t? eddie had always hoped that he and richie would one day end up together, even if it was kind of a stupid thought. but that didn’t seem very likely, seeing as richie couldn’t keep his eyes off of eddie munson. 

eddie kaspbrak had to drag himself through the rest of the school day. it was painfully slow and boring. even though eddie would never touch a joint (does richie even know the risk those things carry?), he couldn’t help but finding himself wishing that he wasn’t entirely in reality right now, either.

after school, eddie trudged home with stan. eddie liked stan. stan played d&d, but he certainly didn’t make it his whole personality. and, since he knew that eddie wasn’t a fan of the game, he just made conversation about other things. this was the one time, however, that eddie wouldn’t have minded talking about d&d. not because he liked the game, but because he couldn’t get this shit off his mind.

“what does munson have that i don’t?” eddie blurted out suddenly, interrupting stan’s story about him walking in on will and mike w. making out in the computer lab.

“uh, what?” stan said, confused. he knew eddie liked richie. he had heard it a thousand times. but eddie NEVER talked about eddie munson.

“what the FUCK does eddie munson have that i don’t?” he repeated, exasperated. “or- well- what does he have that richie is so attached to?”

“oh, uh,” stan started. he didn’t really know what to say. “well, he smokes and he plays d&d and he doesn’t give a fuck about anything,” he said. “he’s basically adopted richie at this point, richie really looks up to him.”

eddie groaned.

“why the fuck am i in love with this idiot?” he asked, looking down and kicking a rock on the pavement.

“that question is beyond me, eddie,” stan said. “i ask myself that every day.” he paused. “are you really jealous of eddie munson? because i guarantee you richie sees him as an older brother. i mean, for fuck’s sake, he’s like 20 at this point. even if richie DID like him, eddie’s not a creep, so he’s not gonna go for a 15-year old.”

eddie stayed quiet and kicked the rock again as he walked along.

“i’m not gonna smoke pot,” he said.

“no one ever said you had to.”

“let me finish.” eddie took a breath, ready for the criticism that was no doubt about to come out of stan’s mouth. “i’m not gonna smoke pot, but maybe i can learn to like your stupid game for him.”

“i’m sorry, WHAT?” stan said, raising an eyebrow. “you HATE d&d, you always say how boring and confusing it is.”

“well yeah, but it’s what richie likes, and i’m not gonna keep fucking sit at home every friday and think about all the time he’s spending with munson and not me,” eddie argued. “maybe i can find some grunge shit to wear too, i don’t know,” he added.

stan rolled his eyes.

“whatever, dude,” he said. “just don’t call me complaining about how you wasted your night playing with us.”

it turned out that eddie didn’t really have anything grunge to wear. he scoured his closet and drawers, but the closest he had was a pair of black skinny jeans and a black and white striped shirt. whatever. it would have to do.

“hey!”

bev’s cheery voice picked up on the other line as eddie set the phone on speaker and got dressed.

“bev, what the fuck am i doing?” eddie groaned, flopping back on his bed after zipping up his jeans.

“i would ask what you’re referring to, but stan kinda told me everything,” bev admitted. “and before you get mad at him, he only said something because he was trying to help and wanted to see if i could- well- reign you in, i guess.”

“reign me in? really?” eddie rolled over and screamed into his pillow. “i knew i should’ve called max instead.”

“okay, rude,” bev said, pretending to be offended. “but really, eddie, you don’t need to change anything. if richie likes you, and i think he does, he’ll like you for YOU, not this persona you’re putting on.”

“can i just borrow some eyeliner?” eddie interrupted, not even processing what bev had said. “please?”

bev sighed.

“fine,” she said. “but i’m coming over and putting it on for you, because god knows you can’t do it by yourself.”

about twenty minutes later, bev, ben, mike hanlon, max, and el burst into eddie’s room. even though mike, max, and el didn’t play, they always went to campaigns to hang out with their friends, unlike eddie.

“what the fuck?” eddie said when he saw them all. “bev, did you seriously tell all of them?”

“no, you just called me when they were all over,” she said. “here, sit up.”

eddie sat up half-heartedly and let bev put the eyeliner on him.

“is this really your attempt at grunge?” max said, raising an eyebrow.

“shut up, i’m working with what i’ve got,” eddie snapped back.

“eddie, i know you kind of have a plan here, but i really think bev’s right,” ben said slowly. “richie will like you for YOU.”

“okay, then he’ll have no problem with me making my own choices and wearing this and playing your stupid game,” eddie said.

“that’s not really what i was getting at,” ben mumbled.

“i think richie does like you. for you,” el stated matter-of-factly. “you are just being a stupid boy.”

“hell yeah, he is,” max said, pecking her girlfriend on the cheek.

“i can’t believe you’re going to the dark side, eddie,” mike said. “now i have to third wheel with el and max as the only people there who don’t play.”

“hey, steve doesn’t play either,” eddie said pointedly. steve was one of eddie munson’s and dustin’s friends. he didn’t play either, but he always tagged along to the campaigns for whatever reason.

“okay, he may not play, but he’s constantly coaching over dustin’s shoulder as if he does, so steve doesn’t really count.”

“done,” said bev. she closed the cap of her eyeliner. “you look hot.”

“i know,” eddie said. “let’s go.”

the group of six headed out the door and to the school for the campaign. eddie didn’t know what he was getting into, really, but at least he looked good while doing it.

mike pushed open the doors when they arrived. everyone else was already there. eddie munson was talking to steve in a low voice and pointing to some things behind his divider. steve looked like he was trying very hard to understand what was going on. mike w., dustin, lucas, will, richie, bill, and stan were in a corner, also talking in low voices. mike and richie seemed to be arguing about something, as per usual. they all turned towards the door when the remaining six walked in. at the sight of eddie, richie fell backwards out of his chair.

“holy shit!” he yelled, sitting up amongst the laughter. “you’re here!”

“don’t make a big deal out of it,” eddie said. but he was feeling pretty confident at the reaction he had just elicited from richie. and he was feeling extra confident at the fact that richie was scanning his eyes up and down eddie’s body.

“what are you wearing?” richie asked, as mike h., el, max, bev, and ben went to join the others. “not that i don’t like it!” he added hurriedly. “it just- it doesn’t seem like you.”

“i’m just trying something new,” eddie said innocently. “now, come on, are we gonna play, or not?”

richie opened his mouth to say something, but eddie munson spoke first.

“kaspbrak, you in?” he said incredulously. “holy shit, i never thought i’d live to see the day.”

“yes, i’m in,” eddie said, louder than he meant for it to come out. “i want to learn. richie, i’ll shadow you. let’s go.”

richie quickly pulled up another chair for eddie and the two sat down. eddie tried hard to pay attention to everything richie was whispering to him, but it made absolutely no sense. did this game even have rules? it just sounded like you made up everything as you went. every time eddie tried to ask a question, richie just had some long-winded response, and he kept leaning over him to discuss with the others, and to argue with his brother, of course. eddie understood less about d&d now than he did before, and that was certainly saying something. not only was he incredibly confused by the game, but eddie munson kept doing all these annoying voices, each making richie laugh more than the last. how the fuck could he stand this kid? finally, after 2 1/2 hours and no end in sight, eddie couldn’t take it anymore.

“i hate to step out now, guys, but my mom wanted me home by 9:30 and i’m already gonna be late,” he lied.

“what? booo!” richie groaned. “come on, you can’t leave now!”

“nah, i really gotta get home,” eddie insisted. he stood up and pulled on his jacket.

“well, kaspbrak, it’s been a pleasure,” eddie munson called after him as he headed for the door. “i would say see you next time, but i could see the boredom on your face, so i think i’ll just see you at lunch.” eddie kaspbrak clenched his teeth and didn’t acknowledge him whatsoever.

what was i thinking? eddie thought, shaking his head as he trudged home. stan was right, i hate this game and i hate these clothes and i really should’ve just stayed home. it was bad enough that he had wasted his night playing a game he didn’t understand, but he would’ve so much rather stayed home and wondered about richie and eddie than been there and seen the heart eyes richie kept making at him. stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stu-

“eds!”

eddie stopped and turned around. richie was jogging after him. “wait up!”

“what is it, richie?” eddie asked. “i’m serious, i need to be home.”

“that’s bullshit,” richie said, catching up and grinning. “your mom wants you home at 9 every night and you know it. you were already late.”

eddie turned red. why the fuck did richie know when he was supposed to be home?

“all the more reason i need to get home,” eddie said, turning around and continuing in the direction of his house.

“wait, eds, come on.” richie reached out and tugged on eddie’s jacket. “where are you running off to? i really thought you were starting to get the hang of it.”

“starting to get the hang of it?” eddie exploded. richie looked taken aback, but eddie couldn’t help it. he had had enough. “starting to get the hang of it, richie? are you kidding me? i didn’t know what the fuck i was doing. i just spent my night playing a game i hate with someone i can’t stand. i get it less now than i did before! and i dressed in these stupid clothes because i thought that MAYBE that would mean you’d pay attention to me again, instead of making heart eyes at stupid eddie senior over there. you’re my best friend and i spent my night MISERABLE because i just wanted to fucking do something you liked and try and get you back from your new fucking boyfriend. and i know i sound like an idiot and this was all my fault, but it’s so much easier to just yell at you for it. so go finish your stupid game and go make out with your boyfriend, and i’m going to go home and get yelled at by my mother for being out all night having the worst. day. of. my. LIFE! so sorry if i’m ‘running off’, but i’m tired and i’m bored and i want to go HOME!”

richie was silent for a moment.

“eds,” he said quietly, “eddie munson is dating steve harrington.”

eddie fell silent. his eyes went wide and his face turned beet red, and he collapsed onto the pavement, head in his hands.

“oh my god,” he whispered. “oh my GOD, i’m so fucking STUPID.”

richie sat down next to eddie quietly.

“why on earth do you care so much about munson?” he asked, after a moment.

“because,” eddie said, “i thought he was, you know, stealing you from me, i guess.” he cleared his throat. “and i’m selfish. and i want to-”

“yeah?”

“i- i want to date you,” eddie choked out. “and i want to be the only one to date you. and i hated the idea of anyone else being with you.” he sniffed. “and it’s really fucking stupid but i wanted to be the best eddie in your life.”

richie smiled. he reached over and tilted eddie’s chin towards him.

“you are the best eddie in my life,” he said. “and the best eds, and the best spaghetti. and you don’t have to play a game you hate or dress in clothes you don’t like for me to like you, because- well, because i do like you. just as you are.”

eddie’s heart skipped a beat. 

“wait, what?” he said. “you- you like me?’

richie laughed.

“man, i knew you were oblivious, but this is BAD,” he joked. “yeah, i like you. and i can prove it too.”

eddie’s heart fluttered and his breath hitched as richie leaned in, and softly kissed him. it was gentle and sweet and perfect. richie put his hands on eddie’s waist, and eddie cupped richie’s face. the world seemed to slow down, not for long, but enough to enjoy the tender moment and the feeling of richie’s lips against eddie’s. all too soon, richie slowly pulled away, leaving eddie stuttering and starstruck.

richie chuckled softly.

“i should kiss you more often,” he said. “i think this is the longest you’ve ever gone without insulting me.”

“shut up,” eddie said, but it was with a blush and a smile. richie grinned back and pulled eddie into his chest for a hug.

“so,” he said after a moment, “you were really jealous of EDDIE MUNSON?”

“stop it!” eddie whined. “i- i thought you liked him.”

richie laughed. 

“he’s like a brother to me, dude, gross!”

“do you really like me for me?” eddie asked after a moment. richie pulled away and looked in eddie’s eyes.

“of COURSE i do,” richie said genuinely. “i always have.”

eddie smiled.

“good,” he said. “because i’m never playing d&d again.”
