Hello dearest Hannibal community,

Thanks to all the peeps who are still following me after like 10ish years of more or less complete inactivity on here.

I did have a lil‘ peak now and then, looked at old posts of mine and reblogged some that didn’t feel all too cringe. Also scrolled through my feed and hannibal tags and found that actually not all too much has changed in this fandom - same humour, same love for the show, same insanity, same kind of lovely people… heck, some of you veterans from back in the day are STILL active! I very much applaud your committment! 👏🏻

I‘m actually writing this post because I thought I‘d give an update on what‘s been going on in my life in hopes that some of you also comment a wee update about themselves or make a post and tag me (and others from the community) 🫶🏻

I‘ll try and make this not too long (Spoiler: it got longer than expected):

Basically, Hannibal (@nbchannibal) fundamentally influenced the trajectory of my life.

I went to med school because of that show and got my medical degree few years ago. Never in my life thought about becoming a medical doctor until I watched Hannibal, more specifally after watching Season 3.

I‘ve always been fascinated by sciences, human anatomy, forensics, horror, the dark and obscure. But also loved arts and creative work, and for the longest time I’d wanted to make that my profession. I was planning on studying Digital Animation right up until I finished my last year of high school. At this point, I didn‘t really have a portfolio for uni application and was doubting my creative skills/potential.

When Season 3 of Hannibal aired, I‘d watched it 2 times in a row and then rewatched Hannibal all together (since have rewatched the whole series again about 3 times). I realized that I didn’t solely love the show because of the (b)romances, its story and its goriness, but because of the psychological and medical aspects of it. Really, really loved the „sassy forensics team“ and their work (even though it was very fantastical at times and surely not the most realistic portayal of forensic medicine). Suddenly, I had the epiphany of becoming a forensic pathologist. Silly me didn‘t know that meant that I’d have to do 6 years of medical school, get a medical degree and then do another 6 years of residency in forensic medicine. But applied for medical school anyways, passed the „big“ entrance test and sure enough, I fell in love with medicine.

My dream of forensic medicine was pretty much crushed right away, since I was told that there were only few residency options in the city where lived (and wanted to continue to live) and hardly ever any open positions in this niche specialty. Also job market was rather saturated - and still is.

Did a pathology internship during uni and found it very intrigueing but couldn‘t really cope with the smells, even though seeing, touching and cutting (recently) deceased bodies was no trouble at all. I then thought, maybe forensics would‘nt have worked for me anyways and abandoned the idea completely.

Last year of medical school I did an internship in psychiatry, enjoyed it, apparently did well enough and was encourage by my attending to pursue a career in that feeld. Before that internship I had again recently rewatched Hannibal, and rather unknowingly paid closer attention to the psychiatrists and psychologists portrayed in that show. Hereby became more and more fascinated by the subject of mental health and mental disorders. I was aware, however, that most psychiatrists in Hannibal almost exclusively performed some form of psychotherapy and hardly any clinical/medical psychiatry was shown.

Ultimately, I got a job at the very same psychiatric clinic I did the internship at and am still doing my residency there. I like my specialty very much, love and care for my patients deeply, and my work definitely gives me some sense of purpose. Do I feel completely fulfilled? No. But who really is, am I right?

As of late, I‘ve been entertaining the idea of forensic medicine again and changing my current specialty. I guess, I have not been able to let it go completely after all…

We ended up moving forward with forking the wiki on to the wiki.gg platform and it's been live since late March of this year. The work you did on the Fandom wiki basically held the entire thing together these last few years and we would love to have you on board with the new wiki, if you're interested. Wiki.gg has tools for importing accounts from Fandom and we would be able to reinstate your moderator status as well.

DREAMS DO COME TRUE and fanfics do come to life, how lucky are we? Seriously though, cooking show Louis AND footie Louis in one day, have we finally crossed out of the dark timeline and into some kind of blessed AU?! Louis is doing a COOKING SHOW (well, a little cooking video), and even better- it’s one of those things where he tries to recreate a recipe on his own for the camera! Full Time Meals is part of Marcus Rashford’s campaign to end child food insecurity in the UK. Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge makes easy meals from cheap ingredients for folks to follow along with, so Louis shouldn’t have too much trouble- good for him, though maybe not quite as entertaining for us, but this is one step closer to Celebrity Bake Off, keep dreaming big and crossing those fingers! Kerridge will post his recipe video on Sunday, and then Monday they’ll post Louis making the same thing. The preview pic is just long ass hair everywhere OMG. Put on a hairnet, hippie! He said, “lonely bug is my inner child,” there will be LB merch- “very limited toy drop might add clothes don’t know,” that the new song has “very very bright lyrics,” and said both that his knee is sore and that his knee is much better thanks, how very Liam.

And in a (these days rare for me) dip into fandom discourse, I see writer Kaitlyn Tiffany is back making the rounds of blogs for her book about the 1D fandom and how craaaazzzy larries are; BLOCK HER. Her tumblr url is kaittiffany (EDIT SJDKJFKS she has deleted since this morning OK THEN but she will be back again; I’m leaving this in for next time as we definitely haven’t seen the last of her, plus you know I went to all the trouble of writing it.) A book actually reporting on this complex and somewhat unique fandom objectively from a place of interest and curiosity would be fascinating and totally worthwhile… but sadly this REALLY ain’t it. She has made it clear she has no intention of actually writing about the intricacies of this fandom, only in finding material to bolster her already decided upon thesis about the ‘clinical paranoia’ and conspiracy theorizing of young women online. Her entire premise is based on her own preconceived bias, and she came here to find things to support her premise rather than coming up with it based on what she saw (not to mention it’s totally dated at this point, she really missed the cultural moment on that) and she has no interest in hearing what we have to say, only in pathologizing to support the sensationalist brief she probably got a publishing advance for and finding things to pull out of context to make her already decided on points. Anyway she wrote the intern- who had not blocked her to that account, oops- offering the ‘choice’ between one of our posts being quoted in her book with or without a name attached GEE THANKS SUCH GREAT OPTIONS; once she sees anything she wants to pull out of context, you can’t do anything about it (this is a public platform), so just block her so she doesn’t see it in the first place.

Hey but since we’re not getting an actual balanced book about the fandom maybe someone should write a companion book to hers analyzing the psychological phenomena of antis! Hey publishers, I can throw around buzz words too plus unlike her I know what I’m talking about as an actual member of this community, check it out: I propose an analysis in the aftermath of the Trump era of ‘othering’ in online spaces and how certain fandom groups operate as a socially acceptable entry level location of practice in demonizing a peer population which can act as a gateway to normalizing the othering of other cultures, races, etc. In this essay book I will address how fans experience peer validation and support to egg each other on in bullying other people because those people have been coded as Other and Wrong and because their community reinforces the idea that attacking other humans is Good Behavior and that normal constraints and ethics are suspended when people need to be Made to Understand the Righteous Truth and that any means justify that end, and how that carries over into non-fandom life and is dangerous as hell. Well I haven’t watched sp all the way through for about a decade now, so I thought it was time

Sometimes I wonder how accurate the fandom is when it comes to how we interpret the characters. Like, why is Stan a football star so often in fanfic and why’s Kyle always the smart one? So I thought I’d rewatch the show and make notes along the way to see where the source of all these interpretations is. I also wanted to see if I could get some fun info to analyze, but season 1 is pretty sparse in that regard so there’s not too much of that in this post, but I’ll make a post for all the other seasons too as I watch them

In summary, it’s established in season 1 already that Stan’s a star quarterback and an animal lover, Kyle’s an A+ student, and Kenny is poor and knows a lot about sex and doesn’t have many qualms about doing crazy shit. Cartman is a bit weird since he’s mostly just a naive brat in this season, but he and Kyle have a mildly antagonistic friendship already

The most cursed things I've seen/heard:

A very intense fan once gave Damon a stuffed teddy bear with a camera inside of it. Thankfully, someone informed Graham and they were able to get rid of it.

A girl pretended/gaslit a bunch of fans into thinking that she was Damon's girlfriend/baby momma. They had about two years of tumblr posts pretending to be Damon and herself talking to each other and a very detailed timeline of events that mostly matched up to Blur's timeline. She said that her and Damon had an unplanned child in the nineties who was killed in a car accident. They didn't speak for years and then Damon found out about the kid, started seeing her again, was no longer in a relationship with Suzi, and had a very sexual daddy/daughter sex relationship that involved Missy hearing her call Damon daddy while they were fucking. On further investigation I found out that they were a pathological liar who said that they slept with many band members. ...Yeah.

During Humanz some very young fan tweeted that she'd given Damon a blow job after a show. She later deleted her account after a lot of backlash and angry fans coming after her.

Graham sometimes checks the twitter profiles of people who tweet at him.

Someone once insinuated that they'd fuck themselves with a Graham Coxon action figure (el Coxo) and Graham saw the tweet.

After one of the TGTBTQ shows in London I went to, apparently there was a second huge after-party at Damon's house. Jamie got so drunk that Denholm had to drag him home.

Graham shat himself and his jumper once when he and Damon were really drunk on Damon's dad's wine.

Damon once woke up to a random Russian girl in his bed and they had sex.

Damon and Alex once made out so much that Damon had to subsequently get a blow job from someone because he was so turned on by it.

Graham, drunk, once broke all the windows on the tour bus when they were touring America.

Damon had sex with so many women in Iceland that it became a local joke that he had illegitimate children with a bunch of Icelandic women.

Wholesome things

Damon saw my Graham Coxon tattoo on my arm during Kids with Guns in L.A. in 2018. He came over to my side of stage and climbed up exactly where I was (I had to hold him up with Smoggy so he wouldn't fall). He saw my tatt and grinned big and then gave me a fist bump as he climbed down. 🥰

On the Humanz tour I saw a fan who told Damon that his music had saved her life and he looked really moved and gave her a huge bear hug. She was crying. It made me cry too, lol.

At one of Graham's shows a male fan told Graham he loved him. It was very cute and wholesome. He was a nice guy.

I saw Keith and Hazel Albarn in London and Damon walks exactly like his dad. Also his parents are adorable.

At Coachella in 2010 I was in the front row for Gorillaz. Jamie passed by and I yelled his name. He seemed surprised that someone recognized him and came over grinning and talked to us for a bit.

At a Gorillaz show at Red Rocks, Damon came out wearing a South American pouch with a rock in it. He said "I'm wearing my special rock inside a big rock." It was cheesy af and I loved him.

At the same show there was a huge sign that said no smoking weed. During soundcheck Damon stood next to the sign smoking a huge blunt and giggling because he was very high.

After a show in Seattle, a bunch of fans waited hours outside for Damon. Damon finally came through in a car and stopped to do autographs and pics with some of the 2D cosplayers. He was very tired, I could tell, but he stopped anyway to say hello to the fans. That meant a lot to me.

Someone once asked Damon about Gramon slash and asked how he felt about it. They explained it's about you and Graham having sex. Damon replied "that sounds hot" and "it's great if people are being creative."

Damon and Graham were once asked about Gramon I think? And Graham went off about how one night when they were teenagers Damon snuck into Graham's room and had a "mental block."

Damon feeds the faeries at his Iceland home to keep them happy and owns what he believes to be is a unicorn horn.

Damon was always mistaken for a little girl when he was a child.

As a teenager, Damon would dress up like Adam Ant and look at himself in the mirror.

Damon stopped going to acting school and transferred to Goldsmiths because he missed Graham.

Damon once dropped his trousers on stage and crawled off when people reacted badly to his bits.

Damon once had to dress up and live as a woman for a few weeks as a class assignment, which included dressing in women's clothing and walking around London.

Now that we’ve got a decent amount of fills, we thought it would be fun to run the numbers to see what the most popular characters and ships are on the kink meme and how that compares to the wider fandom!

Disclaimer: We are not professional statisticians and this was mostly for fun, so while we did our best to catalogue exhaustively and calculate accurately, we cannot guarantee 100% perfect accuracy. We also tried to avoid assessing for values that would require more than a brief skim of the fill to ascertain. 

Top Characters

Here’s a ranking of the most popular characters on the kink meme based on how many fills they appear in. Unsurprisingly, Artemy and Daniil vastly outnumber everyone else, but Lara being the runner-up was an interesting result. She’s quite a bit further down on AO3. Also in contrast to AO3 is the Stamatins’ relative popularity. They’re both popular characters, but on AO3, Peter is the more frequently written twin, but for us, Andrey is best boy. 

Top Ships

More interesting results to be found in the most popular ships! Like AO3, Burakhovsky takes the top spot, but its got a smaller majority than the wider fandom (Kink Meme: 23.7% vs. AO3: 33% at time of recording). That’s almost a 10% difference. What can I say? We love our rairpairs! Blocksquad also makes a strong showing here, as do the Rubemy fans, and our small (but enthusiastic!) handful of filthy twincest shippers. <3

Top Fandom Bicycles

Here’s one I thought might be cool. ‘Fandom Bicycle’ is a term for characters who, uh... get around, so to speak. So what this graph is measuring is how many different characters a character is shipped with. As the previous chart showed, Artemy and Daniil are most often shipped with each other, but each of them has also been shipped with 14 and 13 other characters respectively within our catalogue of fills. According to the kink meme, these are the characters who go with everything! Aglaya’s spot on this graph is interesting, since she’s notably not a part of any of the top ships. High diversity, low consensus! A real wildcard.

Here are the more general ship demographics! We’ve got 50% M/M (vs. 45% on AO3), 19.6% M/F (vs. 8.6% on AO3), and quite a surprisingly amount of Gen for a kink meme! Our F/F stats are a bit less impressive, though. Femslash February, anyone? 

The ‘Other (bi)’ category is for threesomes, orgies, and polyamorous relationships featuring characters of multiple genders. ‘Other (multi)’ is for either your hypothetical straight orgy or fics with main ship/background ship action between ships of multiple categories (e.g. A Burakhovsky fic with background Lara/Rubin). That’s more typical of multi-chapter longfic on AO3, though, so I suspect that’s why we don’t have many of those sorts of fills on the meme. Most prompts ask for specific ships, and fillers generally don’t want to risk hijacking a prompt by adding in a ship the prompt didn’t ask for. ‘Other (weird)’ is self-explanatory. Ships between characters and non-human creatures, gods, concepts, architecture! This is where such classics as Artemy/Wonderbull and Daniil/Polyhedron go. And we’ve got more of it than you’d expect. ;)

This one’s pretty self-explanatory. For a kink meme, we sure have a lot of non-porn! I thought that was pretty cool.

Trans Representation

Trans headcanons are really popular in the Patho fandom and that extends to the kink meme! We thought it might be fun to take stock of all of the explicitly trans content on the meme, though it’s hard to tell how this stacks up to ao3 due to people tagging for it in different ways. To avoid treating cis as the default, we chose to represent this in terms of content where one or more characters are explicitly trans (since most of the time, it goes unstated) and we went about collecting this data using A/Ns, prompt descriptions, as well as skimming all of the fics for trans themes.

And last and most important of all... the thing that I think makes the kink meme one of the best places in the fandom to post your work... the feedback! The meme is super interactive! Almost everything gets comments, and we’ve got lots of conversation and negotiation happening between prompters and fillers. So we decided to count up the top-level comments on every fill and take the mean and median.

Bad Grief

Grief! I love Grief more than almost anyone else in the game! I love his wordplay and his strangely calibrated conscience, and his motley clothes combined with the fact that he’s called “ the anti-Immortell” in the design documents, and I love the little dance he does while idling in classic, and the way he lounges in P2.

He’s a keen observer of human nature, and of his own nature, too. He’s always aware that he’s always on display, and he puts on a show and carries a gun for show, so of course he’s receptive to the existential crisis that Aglaya pushes him towards.

P1 Grief has almost definitely killed people and P2 Grief prooobably hasn’t? I believe in him because I have to, but I do think he struggles with the same killing urge that he talks about in the original game.

He’s trans and bi with a heavy leaning towards men, and polyamorous.

ships: Daniil, Rubin, Artemy, sometimes Andrey

Rubin

Rubin is my favorite oathbreaker! He didn’t do anything wrong and deserves so much better than he got, both from his story and from the fandom. I think people tend to forget that he’s at least as competent a surgeon and doctor as Artemy, and that he was there by Isidor’s side during the First Outbreak. And now he’s basically just an understudy, creating a sample of the panacea in case Artemy doesn’t manage it, and working himself to death in the process. Even if he doesn’t die, he basically disappears after day seven :( It’s quite tragic, on so many levels.

He’s not exactly a nice man or a kind one, but he really does care about the town, and about Artemy, and his reasons for getting angry and bitter and resentful are all valid and justified, and he’s done NOTHING WRONG. I support him but also support Rubin getting some got dam therapy. Get some sleep, tall child.

His gender is No Thank You, but he sullenly accepts he/him pronouns because asking someone to change for him is just bringing attention to something he’d rather avoid.

Not aromantic, but guarded enough in general that he doesn’t feel or acknowledge attraction very often, but when he does it’s always men.

Lara

I like Lara a lot, both as a character and for her role in the larger picture. In the first game she was almost too much of an angel for me to care about her, but I got pretty sad in the Changeling Route when she talked about wanting to be a mother but never getting the chance.

Earlier today I was talking with some friends on twitter about how in Pathologic 2 she can be passive-aggressive and evasive and just in general not a perfect kind mediator, because she’s so caught up in her own Stuff, and I really appreciate that about her character! Let women be intense and complicated and rough! Her house is still called the Shelter, but she’s never really able to offer shelter to anyone but Artemy and even that, she does with some bitterness. It’s so good and sad, and I love her.

I’ve also got feeeelings about her and her father and Alexander Block, but that would probably take a huge essay to explain.

She’s a cis bi woman. I’ve occasionally thought of her as a trans woman, mostly because of that line i mentioned about wanting to be a mother, but I’ve never thought too deeply about it.

Artemy

Artemy’s whole path is about love, and yet he believes he’s incapable of love, and I cry about him a lot. His path is also about balance and about trying to reconcile different parts of himself and his culture, and it’s about trying to take on his father’s legacy and trying to even understand it, while also wanting to make his own future with the way he understands the world.

Hello! I was debating on how (if at all) to answer this, since you seem to have already made up your mind to not hear anything further about this issue altogether.

But I do have a few things to say, regardless, because I found specific phrases you used, to be sketchy/unclear at best.

Warning tho : this is going to delve into a discussion of "rape and sexuality" from a real life perspective, since the fandom seems so bent upon drawing parallels to reality and compare fiction and irl examples. If you find that uncomfortable, block the tag "tw:rape" and scroll past.

Putting aside the issue of the subject matter of the threads for a second, I'll focus on the other part : about *posting publicly*. I talked to three separate followers of the twt artist, who also happen to be my tumblr mutuals, and they basically confirmed the same thing : there was no "open discussion", in the sense, that, they did so either on Privatter (assuming you know how it works) or they did in the comment threads on their *personal twitter account*, and only those who were willing to engage in such a discussion, went ahead and joined. They did not encroach on anyone's space and invite them in forcefully.

I'm putting the screenshots of conversation I've had with one of my friends regarding this, and as you can see, none of it was *open for public viewing*

Let me put this in perspective : suppose you're not into kpop (I picked a random example, btw) and find it weird and flamboyant, and you generally avoid it altogether. While scrolling through tumblr, you stumble upon a hardcore kpop blog, you're totally put off by the contents and you complain to your mutuals about how ABC person indulges in kpop and you found it weird and unappealing.

But my point is, there was nothing public about the said blog or account, because, by nature, every blog or account is a person's private space for expression of ideas. Yes, tumblr, twitter and other social media platforms are all *public* in the sense that they are hosted on public domains and anyone with an access to the Internet can stumble upon any website or blog listed therein. But, you, being a responsible, well discerning person, willingly stepped onto a personal blog or acc on which the owner was likely to present their own views, and started complaining about what you found there. Your statement implies, that you willingly browsed through the comment threads until the point you spotted these uncomfortable discussions and you voluntarily exposed yourself to the same.

I find it highly confusing how you generalised something as sensitive and complex as psychological behaviour on behalf of a bunch of strangers you never actually interacted with (or confirmed their views on the said matter) and proceeded to label them as "people who liked rape".

What does the statement "liking rape" mean anyway? And, does anyone who talk about or discusses rape, in the context of fanarts and fanfiction, and that too, "rape fantasy" in this case, (but I'll get to it in a moment) automatically becomes someone who likes the act? Or condones it happening in real life, to real people or situations? I'm curious as to which aspect of rape they talked about 'liking' (since your statement implies they explicitly stated so) : was it the pain, the trauma, the physical and psychological stress, or the violence and the sense of dominance over a helpless, real life person?

If you do have an answer supported by evidence, let me know, I'll modify my response gladly.

It brings me to my third point : these artists or the people who commented, were discussing, not about real life rape, but a fantasy situation in which they put two fictional characters together and made a fanart of them (the composition of the art in question is described in the conversation above).

Deriving pleasure from the actual act of rape or sexual violence is a pathological condition and needs medical or psychiatric treatment.

Deriving pleasure or indulging in paraphilic sexual fantasies, however, is not uncommon. I'll redirect you to @iamtrashforash 's post here that describes this issue more coherently. I'll also point you to articles written on PsychologyToday, based on research done on this specific topic of "Rape Fantasy" that I found, and I think everyone should have a look at them :

If I remember correctly, the actual comment I saw in the screenshot circulating around, regarding the controversy, went something along the lines of "I love seeing Ash's pained face in this situation", and that's what made people lose their minds. There was outrage over "How could you do that with Ash, a CSA survivor? It sends a bad message to them, it's triggering, it's disrespectful, you are disgusting, etc etc."

But, my own conversations with three people who are in real life CSA survivors, two of them who reached out to me in my DMs over the last two days, have given me a very different idea about what these people actually think regarding the art. Here's the hot take : they did not find it disturbing or offensive to themselves personally.

In fact, they pointed out, that they saw it as a fictional scenario, were well aware of the differences between the artist's intent and their potential real life behaviour (FYI, none of them drew the conclusion that either the artist or the people discussing it, "liked rape").

The fact that the comment threads were openly talking about indulging in such a fantasy is what seemed to baffle the more outspoken and outraged people, who proceeded to harass and send hate messages to the creators. But here's the fact : these fetishes have existed for as long as humanity has, and will continue to do so, regardless of whether you crucify a handful of people in a small corner of a fandom or not.

If you're familiar with the yaoi manga genre, or any adult erotica games (I can't cite any examples bc I don't have enough details, but I do know they exist), you'll find a plethora of works where all sorts of fantasy situations are presented : rape is fetishised, there's shape-shifters (vampires or otherwise), A/B/O dynamics, even bestiality. In other words, a major prevalence of themes like dominant, aggressive behaviour contrasted with helpless, passive behaviour as far as sexual situations go. And they are thriving. They have a huge pool of audience out in the world.

Whether these fetishes are "morally right or wrong" to indulge in, is not a question I have any authority to debate, because I'm not a clinical psychologist, or a behavioural scientist.

Personally speaking, I happen to be a demisexual person. Any discussion of sexual situations or scenarios outside of my own very narrow comfort zone or mental compatibility scares the shit out of me. And I find all of the above scenarios I described, as plainly unappealing and downright weird or scary. I will never, as long as I have my faculties in control, go out seeking any of them voluntarily, in either fanarts or fiction.

My point is, this is a complicated issue, I fully acknowledge that beforehand. We, as a fandom, got attached to Ash as a character, for so many different reasons. We all love him, respect him for standing up against all odds, and fighting against his fate all his life. That's the reason why the back-lash against these depictions got so violent, I think. People are more willing to see him heal, to see him make peace with his scars and move on. The general consensus with this line of thought was so ingrained in our minds, that people lashed out as soon as something "against the norms" and "potentially harmful" came to their notice.

But, the thing is, both these outcomes, are fictional. The fandom's biggest purpose is this : we weave fiction out of fiction itself. That's why we have fanarts and AUs and headcanons and a hundred other things. And different people will find different aspects of said fictional scenarios appealing. It's why we have so many ships on one hand and unfortunately, *ridiculous* ship-wars and toxic discourses on the other. But, it's okay to accept that there'll always be differences in such a wide space where everyone is coming together. It's okay to find content you don't agree with, and simply, move on.

But, I'll repeat myself : I'm not going to persecute people, who have carefully tagged, classified, and filtered their content, being mindful of the others in the fandom, and barge on their doors demanding "why they liked what they liked" and "how could they like such a thing??". Especially because it is fiction, involving fictional characters, separated from reality.

Had it been a real life discourse, involving actual people, I'd have definitely spoken out against it.

Arrival: 12 mysterious spacecrafts appear around the world, and a renowned linguist is hired by the military to try and communicate with the aliens inside. It is an alien “invasion” movie involving no action or world destruction, and as someone who majored in speech pathology, may I just say holy shit this movie is fucking amazing. I know I’m super late to this party, but if you haven’t seen it please watch it. It’s on Amazon Prime. Go now. 100,000/10

Set it Up: Two overworked assistants to extremely narcissistic employers try to set up their bosses in an effort to get some time off. Naturally, because it’s a romcom, the assistants fall in love along the way. It’s The Parent Trap meets The Devil Wears Prada, and it’s pretty adorable! 7/10

The Incredibles: Pixar’s version of the fantastic four that works better than any actual fantastic four movie. Come on we all know the Incredibles, I just watched it because it’s my favorite Pixar movie and I was hyped for the sequel! 10/10

The Incredibles 2: The sequel we’ve been wanting for FOURTEEN YEARS has finally come to the big screen, and it’s amazing. It has everything I ever wanted: the family fighting crime, Elastagirl being an amazing role model, an adorable baby, more Frozone, jaw dropping animation, more creative superheroes....but somehow I still like the original better. This one just didn’t have the spy feeling that I loved so much in the original, and they family didn’t have a lot of scenes with all of them together. And the fact that it’s so unfriendly to people with epilepsy doesn’t help. But still amazing 9/10

Jaws: I was browsing Amazon Prime videos and realized I had never seen Jaws before...it’s pretty good. There’s a big shark...and government corruption...and good cinematography...and that’s all I have to say. 8/10

Despicable Me 3: Those gosh darned minions are back and- wait there’s actually not as much of them in this movie...have the animation gods finally answered our prayers!? Anyway is there even a plot to this movie? Lucy continues to be the funniest and most interesting character while Gru is off doing...something with a long lost twin brother. I have no real excuse for watching this. 6/10

My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Rollercoaster of Friendship: The girls have to deal with Equestrian magic at an amusement park where an evil blogger/internet star who inexplicably runs an amusement park gets the power to teleport people...for some reason. These specials have no rhyme or reason to them anymore, but I just can’t get away from this franchise. 6/10

The Last Jedi: Yeah I’m just gonna leave this one here.

Books!

This summer has not been great for my reading life

Circe by Madeline Miller: AKA Local island witch just wants to be left the fuck alone.

If you thought Song of Achilles was a rollercoaster, be prepared to laugh, cry, and throw up while following the story of a woman whose name you heard once during your classic literature class. It is a very slow read, but every page is worth it. Circe is probably my favorite female character of the year so far, Odysseus still deserves his own Madeline Miller version of the Odyssey, Penelope turns out to be a badass bitch to the surprise of no one, and I want my own pet lion. 10 badass Greek women out of 10

Opal by Maggie Stiefvater: A short story taking place shortly after the end of The Raven Cycle series. It is about Opal. She’s an adorable half goat child, and she represents the entire fandom because we too don’t want Adam to leave for college and would happily spend all day spying on our favorite boys making out and taking naps together. And I swear if the Ronan trilogy doesn’t bring up who the hell was snooping around the barns I will personally come to Maggie’s house and shake the answer out of her. 10/10

TV Shows!

Nailed It season 2: Regular people bake insanely professional complicated stuff in hopes of winning money. I just like seeing cool looking baked goods. 8/10

Queer Eye: Makeovers! Okay, all the guys guest starred on Nailed It so naturally I had to watch it for context! 9/10

Glow: A bunch of women in the 1980s star in a tv show about wrestling. Honestly, I don’t even know if I like this show. It’s very well made. But the characters jump between being likeable and unlikeable like they’re in a hopscotch tournament. It’s offensive, but it’s supposed to be offensive on purpose...oh well. ?/10

Dreamworks Dragons: I finally finished all 8 seasons of the How to Train your Dragon tv show! Two seasons from cartoon network, six from Netflix, and holy cow that show is way better than it has any right to be. Now I must patiently wait for the third movie...which had better include a Heather cameo, and a Mala cameo, and a Dagur cameo, and the Wingmaidens. 10/10

Honorable Mentions

Mean Girls the musical: As someone who has never really seen the movie, this was pretty fun. 8/10

Season 2 of Tangled the animated series started. Make that two shows based off of beloved animated movies that are way better than they have any right to be.

JULY STEVEN UNIVERSE BOMB

I finally listened to The Lightning Thief musical soundtrack. I think there’s some sort of contractual obligation for George Salazar to sing incredibly self deprecating depressing solos in every show he’s in.

What I got so far from the notes that I read, and almost all BTS MV’s (and trailers, and HR):

It looks like by making our brains hurt and creating general confusion they are doing sth very, very important. 

They are tackling the issues of: child abandonment, suicide, friendship, mental illness, self-hatred and self-growth, alcoholism, pathological families, child abuse, self-defense and it’s after-effects (if Tae really killed his father), childhood trauma (Jimin’s notes?), murder (potential?), the loss (of innocence, of friends etc.), poverty, the struggles of youth. 

And they are doing it with baby steps. And I’m talking here about ‘3 years and counting’ baby steps. They are letting this issues sink in viewers minds (I’m new to the fandom but I can see the years of work they put out there). It’s not ‘bam! So this is x issue, think about it’ then some new concept, and then no getting back to the previous one. They are making people think and remember. Don’t let them forget about those issues. Don’t let them sweep it under the rug, because the story goes on and on. The characters are still living, still have story to tell, still suffer. They don’t let people ignore it. They make them think ‘oh light concept, DNA nothing to think about’ and then come back with ‘Fake love’ which is ‘hello, yes there are happy times but look people still suffer, and the story is not over, everything is connected’. Like real life: there may be good times, but let’s not forget that a smile can be a mask. I’m not saying all people are sad and have deep rooted issues, but many do, the ones in the storyline do. And it looks like some (most??) MV’s and HR are about them.

I’m not sure if I am making sense here. These thoughts just hit me while I was reading the notes from the Tear album. I’m not sure if BTS and BigHIt are doing what I wrote about, but I’m impressed anyway.

(Theories and what not are cool, but what’s awesome is that they portray the issues I wrote about above.)
