So so indebted to u for posting those lovely illustrations from Cyrano <333 & even more so for yr tags!! I'm completely in love w yr analysis, please feel free to ramble as long as u wish! Browsing through yr Cyrano de Bergerac tag has given me glimpses of so many adaptations & translations I'd never heard of before! I'll be watching the Solès version next, which I have only discovered today through u ^_^ As for translations, have u read many/all of them? I've only encountered the Renauld & Burgess translations in the wild, & I was curious to hear yr translation thoughts that they might guide my decision on which one I buy first (not necessarily Renauld or Burgess ofc). Sorry for the delay. Don't mind the likespam, I'm glad you enjoyed my tags about Cyrano, and that they could contribute a bit to a further appreciation of the play. I loved it a lot, I got obsessed with it for months. It's always nice to know other people deeply love too that which is loved haha I hope you enjoy the Solès version, it may well be my favourite one!
About translations, I'm touched you're asking me, but I don't really know whether mine is the best opinion to ask. I have read... four or five English translations iirc, the ones I could find online, and I do (and especially did, back when I was reading them) have a lot of opinions about them. However, nor English nor French are my first languages (they are third and fourth respectively, so not even close). I just read and compare translations because that's one of my favourite things to do.
The fact is that no translation is perfect, of course. I barely remember Renauld's, but I think it was quite literal; that's good for understanding the basics of the text, concepts and characters, but form is subject, and there's always something that escapes too literal translations. Thomas and Guillemard's if I recall correctly is similar to Hooker's in cadence. It had some beautiful fragments, some I preferred over Hooker's, but overall I think to recall I liked Hooker's more. If memory serves, Hooker's was the most traditionally poetic and beautiful in my opinion. Burgess' is a whole different thing, with its perks and drawbacks.
Something noticeable in the other translations is that they are too... "epic". They do well the poetic, sorrowful, grief stricken, crushed by regrets aspects of Cyrano and the play in general, but they fall quite short in the funny and even pathetic aspects, and that too is key in Cyrano, both character and play. Given the characteristics of both languages, following the cadence of the French too literally, with those long verses, makes an English version sound far too solemn at times when the French text isn't. Thus Burgess changes the very cadence of the text, adapting it more to the English language. This translation is the one that best sets the different moods in the play, and as I said before form is subject, and that too is key: after all, the poetic aspect of Cyrano is as much true as his angry facet and his goofy one. If Cyrano isn't funny he isn't Cyrano, just as he wouldn't be Cyrano without his devotion to Roxane or his insecurities; Cyrano is who he is precisely because he has all these facets, because one side covers the other, because one trait is born from another, because one facet is used as weapon to protect the others, like a game of mirrors and smoke. We see them at different points through the play, often converging. Burgess' enhances that. He plays with the language itself in form and musicality, with words and absences, with truths masking other truths, with things stated but untold, much like Cyrano does. And the stage directions, poetic and with literary value in their own right in a way that reminded me of Valle Inclán and Oscar Wilde, interact with the text at times in an almost metatextual dimension that enhances that bond Cyrano has with words, giving them a sort of liminal air and strengthening that constant in the play: that words both conceal and unveil Cyrano, that in words he hides and words give him away.
But not all is good, at all. Unlike Hooker, Burgess reads to me as not entirely understanding every facet of the characters, and as if he didn't even like the play all that much, as if he had a bit of a disdainful attitude towards it, and found it too mushy. Which I can understand, but then why do you translate it? In my opinion the Burgess' translation does well bending English to transmit the different moods the French text does, and does pretty well understanding the more solemn, cool, funny, angry, poetic aspects of Cyrano, but less so his devotion, vulnerability, insecurities and his pathetism. It doesn't seem to get Roxane at all, how similar she is to Cyrano, nor why she has so many admirers. It does a very poor job at understanding Christian and his value, and writes him off as stupid imo. While I enjoyed the language aspect of the Burgess translation, I remember being quite angry at certain points reading it because of what it did to the characters and some changes he introduces. I think he did something very questionable with Le Bret and Castel-Jaloux, and I remember being incensed because of Roxane at times (for instance, she doesn't go to Arras in his version, which is a key scene to show just how much fire Roxane has, and that establishes several parallels with Cyrano, in attitude and words, but even in act since she does a bit what Cyrano later does with the nuns in the last act), and being very angry at several choices about Christian too. While not explicitly stated, I think the McAvoy production and the musical both follow this translation, because they too introduce these changes, and they make Christian as a character, and to an extent the entire play, not make sense.
For instance, once such change is that Christian is afraid that Roxane will be cultured (McAvoy's version has that infamous "shit"/"fuck" that I detest), when in the original French it's literally the opposite. He is not afraid she will be cultured, he is afraid she won't, because he does love and appreciate and admires those aspects of her, as he appreciates and admires them in Cyrano. That's key! Just as Cyrano longs to have what Christian has, Christian wants the same! That words escape him doesn't mean he doesn't understand or appreciate them. The dynamics make no sense without this aspect, and Burgess (and the productions that directly or indirectly follow him) constantly erases this core trait of Christian.
Another key moment of Christian Burgess butchers is the scene in Arras in which Christian discovers the truth. Burgess writes their discussion masterfully in form, it's both funny and poignant, but it falls short in concept: when Cyrano tells him the whole discussion about who does Roxane love and what will happen, what they'll do, is academic because they're both going to die, Christian states that dying is his role now. This destroys entirely the thing with Christian wanting Roxane to have the right to know, and the freedom to choose, or to refuse them both. As much as Cyrano proclaims his love for truth and not mincing words even in the face of authority, Cyrano is constantly drunk on lies and mirages, masks and metaphors. It's Christian who wants it all to end, the one who wants real things, the one who wants to risk his own happiness for the chance of his friend's, as well as for the woman he loves to stop living in a lie. That is a very interesting aspect of Christian, and another aspect in which he is written as both paralleling and contrasting Cyrano. It's interesting from a moral perspective and how that works with the characters, but it's also interesting from a conceptual point of view, both in text and metatextually: what they hold most dear, what they most want, what most fulfills them, what they most fear, their different approaches to life, but also metatextually another instance of that tears/blood motif and its ramifications constant through the whole text. Erasing that climatic decision and making him just simply suicidal erases those aspects of Christian and his place in the Christian/Cyrano/Roxane dynamic, all for plain superficial angst, that perhaps hits more in the moment, but holds less meaning.
Being more literal, and more solemn, Hooker's translation (or any of the others, but Hooker's seems to love the characters and understand them) doesn't make these conceptual mistakes. Now, would I not recommend reading Burgess' translation? I can't also say that. I had a lot of fun reading it, despite the occasional anger and indignation haha Would I recommend buying it? I recommend you give an eye to it first, if you're tempted and can initially only buy one.
You can read Burgess' translation entirely in archive.com. You can also find online the complete translations of Renauld, Hooker and Thomas and Guillemard. I also found a fifth one, iirc, but I can't recall it right now (I could give a look). You could read them before choosing, or read your favourite scenes and fragments in the different translations, and choose the one in which you like them better. That's often what I do.
Edit: I've checked to make sure and Roxane does appear in Arras in the translation. It's in the introduction in which it is stated that she doesn't appear in the production for which the translation was made. The conceptualisation of Roxane I criticise and that in my opinion is constant through the text does stay, though.
#I have a lot of opinions about translations in general tbh but this is not a semi clear case like in Crime and Punishment#in which there's one detail that a translation must do for me to recommend it (it used to be the one but now in English several do it)#I wouldn't recommend Burgess as a first approach to the play‚ but having already read the play and knowing the text and characters#and how Burgess may modify it‚ then I wouldn't not recommend it because it is the best in form in many aspects#And while he fails in direct concept‚so to speak‚ form is particularly important in this play and in conveying concept and characterisatio#So idk personal taste is it I guess? Oh my god enough about Elain wanting sunshine 😩
Let's run through some facts (and if you don't believe these are facts, please open the books for the first time and read it for yourself):
Elain says she wants sunshine
Nesta takes her to the sunny garden
Lucien does not sit with Elain in the garden
Lucien has one uncomfortable conversation with Elain
He says she needs fresh air (not sunlight)
Lucien has ALWAYS been associated with fox and flame symbolism/motifs (NOT the sun, not "light" in general)
We do not know if the IC (including Nesta) tried to take Elain outside before Feyre arrived.
Feyre & Rhys believe Lucien is the love child of LoA & Helion
There are 3 SOLAR courts: Dawn, Day, and Night. They ALL have sunlight
Helion is the HL of the Day Court. He is the only one in this series that has sun imagery. Not his court, not Lucien.
The NC crest is 3 mountains, 3 stars. The NC crest is NOT a moon.
We do not know the Day Court crest, or if they have one. Who is to say it would even include the sun?
Azriel was not present in the scene where Elain said she needed sunshine
Azriel, unprompted, takes her to sit in the sunny garden. How did he know what she needed without hearing her voice it?
Azriel even after the war, still sits with her till the late hours of the night, going over Elain's gardening plans
Now, out of these facts, can someone tell me how this foreshadows Elucien? If we are using that logic of Elain wanting sunshine, then are y'all trynna say she wants Helion or something?
Because how is saying she wants sunshine in any way related to Lucien personally?
She said she wants the sun, not the son 🤪 (side note I'm really proud of this one I'm sorry I'm so unserious lmao)
ANYWAYS
An endgame pairing can be foreshadowed, but the clues have to be directly associated with the couple in question.
Ex: Feyre looking up at the night sky, painting the drawers
But foreshadowing of an endgame is not going to be some distant tie between Elain asking for sunlight once and her mate's father being associated with the sun.
Sometimes descriptive writing... is just descriptive writing.
When it comes to giant fantasy books like these with intense world building, a lot of things can get lost in translation. You need a lot more description because what the author is describing likely isn't something that exists in our world today so it's hard for people to picture and understand.
So then how do readers know what to focus on? How do they understand and process books like these?
I saw this a while back but when it comes to fantasy, the rule of thumb is if you are really looking for clues and foreshadowing vs just descriptive writing, look at what the author is repeating.
Repetition is key.
Repeated words, repeated phrases, repeated messages, repeated imagery - these are all ways you can tell something is important, especially in fantasy books.
So - in conclusion -
Elain saying she needs sunlight ONCE is not foreshadowing or code for "she yearns for Helion The day Court Lucien"
SJM constantly repeating how Elain will wed for love and beauty, Elain had hoped that love would trump even a mating bond, the constant questioning of the cauldron -
These are the things SJM is telling us to focus on. If it wasn't important, it wouldn't have been repeated so many times already.

i want to talk about the sun/moon motif in in other lands. let’s go let’s do it.
luke is a blonde guy with tan skin. his last name contains the word “sun.” serene is inhumanly pale with dark hair. the two of them have a unique warrior bond and swore never to ride into battle without the other. luke is the sun and serene is the moon; simple enough, right?
wrong.
let’s switch gears and look at elliot’s dad’s description of elka. “‘she was the first thing i saw when i walked into a room … whatever she said was brilliant and startling … she was like that, a constant bright surprise … she was never what i expected. i was even surprised when she left’” (page 128 in my ebook).
the scene is so sad, primarily because of what his dad next says to elliot: “‘you’re not like her. … nobody will ever love you enough to stay.’”
this is heartbreaking for two reasons. first, because what the hell kind of parent says that to their own child. but second, because elliot is like elka. he is brilliant, startling, surprising, and very bright. he’s not to everybody’s taste—we know that—but elka here is being described by someone who was (is still?) in love with her. i have no doubt that serene or luke would consider elliot’s dad’s words a pretty solid description of elliot.
(elliot’s character mirrors elka’s in other ways too. obviously, they are both able to travel to the borderlands; both experience more ambivalence than most real-world recruits seem to about whether or not to stay. they have similar senses of humor [i think? hard to tell if elka is joking around but it seems like she’s less than fully serious] and are abrupt and spiky. elliot likes elka, gets her. they have the same color hair. and both of them ultimately leave elliot’s dad and go to the borderlands.)
the parallels between elliot and elka are numerous and crucial to understanding the text, which allows us to pretty safely analyze the only real description we get of elka as applying to elliot as well. and what else is true of that description? it’s super sun-coded!
elka is (was) obvious, unignorable: a source of brightness, light, and warmth. just like the night that follows each day, her abandonment is framed as inevitable and unstoppable.
(note that the same is true of elliot! the dialogue here is “‘You know what day it is. You know what’s coming.’” / “‘I know that you’re going’” [876 in my ebook]. elliot’s leaving is also expected, unsurprising; a given.)
in conclusion, elka is the sun, elliot is elka, and therefore elliot is the sun. but then… who is the moon? let’s look at our options.
luke is not all that sun-like, but he’s also not much of a moon archetype. he hates crowds, hates being the center of attention. he’s shy, which i guess could be moon-coded? but he isn’t very mysterious about it, which to me is key to the moon part of the dynamic.
serene, as mentioned, is a better candidate, except that she and elliot don’t make a pair; elliot is wrong about their being fated for each other, just as he was wrong about luke being a perfect golden hero. serene gets her own sun, too: golden-hair-scented-like-summer. perfect sun motif.
as for luke and elliot… i don’t know. i’m not really that into the whole moon/sun dynamic as a general trope, so i’m not that invested, but i think you could pretty convincingly argue that luke is in fact the moon to elliot’s sun.
anyway that’s the post. elliot is the sun, serene is the moon but not elliot’s moon (this i think contributes to why elliot was so sure they would end up together: on some level he was aware of the tropes at play), luke seems like he’s the sun but is either the moon or possibly, like, some sort of cloud formation, and golden is the sun to serene’s moon. okay bye.

BioWare describe the new cinematic as an "in-game cinematic" ("not actual gameplay"), a "work in progress cinematic" and a "key cinematic". In the blog post they say "we wanted to close out this year with [showing the new cinematic]" - I wonder if this is communicating that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will not be present at The Game Awards 2022?
The blog post repeats the 2020 teaser trailer tagline, "The Dread Wolf Rises", and the motif of waiting for Solas to make his move recalls an earlier blog post where they said "Rest assured, Solas is placing his pieces on the board as we speak." This language always reminds of Solas' chess match with The Iron Bull. And of rooks (the chess piece) & therefore of his Tower tarot card, and of the Red Book with wolf & tower in its emblem.
Stylistically and with Varric's voiceover, the new cinematic is reminiscent of the Varric-narrated cinematics in the Dragon Age Keep and in DAII when he tells Cassandra the story of the Fifth Blight in relation to the Champion in the opening, and the cinematics he narrates in DAII that bridge the Acts. Could this be the introduction cinematic to DA:D? Returning players know who Solas is, but new players need that grounding.
"Elven god of lies or heroic rebel against tyranny? Depends on who you ask" is reminiscent of Codex entry: The Rebel God.
The Dalish use "Harellan" to mean "traitor to one's kin," but the word does not appear in any elven text before the Towers Age. The ancient root-word is related to "harillen," or opposition, and "hellathen," or noble struggle. The Dalish call Fen'Harel a god of deception, but I posit a far more accurate translation would be "god of rebellion."
What he rebelled against is a story lost to time. In Dalish legends, Fen'Harel seals away the other deities out of love of trickery. If we understood more ancient elven, we might find earlier versions of the Dread Wolf's story give him a more nuanced motivation beyond spite.

God of deception, or god of rebellion? God of lies or heroic rebel? Which version of the story is the truth? The truth is probably somewhere in-between.
The title of the video on YouTube, "Who is The Dread Wolf?" reminds of Rasaan in Genitivi Dies in the End, in search of his "true name".
Regarding the cinematic itself:

The first painting recalls Solas both as Hermit and Hierophant. He's in the same position as he is in the Hermit, carrying the same staff and enhaloed by concentric circles, sun-like. Meanwhile the rolling hills on which he stands, golden leaves and lighting are more like the Hierophant. Then the screen darkens and the sun becomes a (full) moon. Interesting to see that here the Dread Wolf's eyes are Red like the Tower card again, not blue as here.

The howl at this point reminded me of the howling wolves in the background when the Inquisitor is lost in the snow, and the overcoat and pin here are similar to this outfit.

The golden geometric patterns remind of the 2020 trailer where the "Dragon Age" logo was gold in color, over a black background and sun-like background. It also reminds me of sacred geometry (which "is associated with the belief that a god is the creator of the universal geometer"; "the belief that a god created the universe according to a geometric plan"). Anyways, here is where it gets really interesting. We are no strangers to the concentric circles motifs and these patterns: the Golden/Black City in the center of the Fade, surrounded by a hemisphere barrier which represents the Veil. The Golden City turns Black right as Varric says "Solas imprisoned them". Is Solas doing this what caused the Golden City to turn Black, corrupted and Blighted? Recall Duncan in the opening of DA:O:
"The Chantry teaches us that is the hubris of men that brought darkspawn into our world. The mages had sought to usurp Heaven, but instead, they destroyed it. They were cast out, twisted and cursed by their own corruption. They returned as monsters, the first of the darkspawn. They became a Blight upon the lands."
Hubris is defined as excessive pride, and when that cinematic shows the Magisters returning to the world Tainted, there's a peacock feather shown (a symbol of pride). pride, or Pride himself? If the Golden City turned Black when Solas imprisoned the Evanuris, then this seems to imply a connection between Solas locking the Evanuris away (or more specifically, between Solas creating the Veil in order to do so) and the origin of the Blight. Creating the Veil, an unnatural construct, is connected to the Blight beginning. A fan theory which existed prior to this cinematic to be sure, but still cool to see here.
And so is the Golden City blackened With each step you take in my Hall. Marvel at perfection, for it is fleeting. You have brought Sin to Heaven And doom upon all the world.

According to Corypheus, the Golden City was already Black when they reached it, and the throne was empty. Was it the hubris of human men, or the hubris of one man, Solas, that brought doom upon all the world in the form of the Blights? The world he woke up to in DAI was a nightmare world, to him.
Also of note are the seven symbols arranged around the outside of the ring. It's been speculated based on previous versions of the 'hemisphere with some spheres lit and some not lit' image that the lit/unlit hemispheres represent the Old Gods, two still sleeping. And while they may still be connected (Old Gods-Evanuris), we have seen these symbols before, in Trespasser atop elven mirrors and statues, and in mosaics. They're elven, and so the symbols, and therefore the lit/unlit hemispheres, actually represent the Evanuris, minus Mythal ('dead' at the time) and Solas himself. Two specifically are immediately recognizable:

it's hard to tell, but maybe he's holding the red lyrium idol here? And does this show the past, Solas creating the Veil atop the mountains in the Frostbacks where Skyhold now stands ("the place where the sky is held up/back"), or is this future him destroying and taking it back down? Maybe both.
Q: Why does Varric say "he wanted", not "he wants"? And what's the golden disc in the center of the circle? It's more central than the Golden/Black City. Is the City perhaps not the center of the Fade after all?

Ya know, a ways back someone had asked me if I had any takes on Yoruichi's tattoo --I forget in which ask, but there was a bigger question that I wound up answering and I sort of forgot about the tattoo part entirely. But at the time, I really didn't have anything to say about it anyhow, but I don't think Kubo had released that art of the original Gotei at the time. So as it happens there are some odd little adjacencies now, although not especially strong ones... but I figure I can squeeze a post out of it.
So originally Kubo did a little color spread of all the Bleach girls in swimwear at the beach, and that in turn got adapted into a dumb little filler thing in the anime based off some other omake. It's also shows up in Bleach Brave Souls.

But in the body of the manga itself, she's never actually shown with it. In most cases we don't get a 100% irrefutably clear view, but there are plenty of moments where her left upper thigh is definitely visible enough that if the tattoo was canon it should have been visible. The most obvious contradiction being her first appearance in her human form on account of, you know... her being entirely naked for that...

Now, one of the most immediate evocations of the sun tattoo would seem to be Ichigo's "Black Sun" motif --although it seems like a "tribal" style tattoo, which would be solid black anyway, making it hard to really assume it's a deliberately associated color-- which is itself actually kind of weird because it started entirely meta textually as part of the pair of databooks, SOULs and VIBEs: the former being the manga databook, and the latter being the accompanying anime databook, together featuring the phrase
"the rain drags black sun down, but the rain dried by white moon".
But this actually conflicts with the manga's use of a black moon motif for Ichigo, and doesn't really appear in the text at all. In fact the only real association Ichigo has with the black sun in the story proper might be the tangential association with Yhwach calling him, "my son born in the dark" when Yhwach himself is associated with the sun and light, and his own mirroring of the black flame(?) motif.

Otherwise the only loose link between Ichigo and the phrase "black sun" is that zangetsu's crossguard in bankai is a manji/swastika --a symbol used in Japanese Buddhism, via Chinese Buddhism, via Indian Buddhism, but originally taken from Indian hinduism where it was itself a sign of the sun god Surya-- and the SchwarzeSonne:"Black Sun" rune was a part of Himmler's stupid esoteric LARPing horseshit he did in the N*zi party, where he just mashed up the swastika, Nordic runes(𐌔), the alchemical sol niger:"black sun", and the Arthurian round table concepts so he could have that dumb mosaic built into the floor of the Wewelsburg castle he had requisitioned.
Sorry i got off topic... point being: the BlackSun was kind of like a leveled up swastika as far as n*zi symbols go, so it kind of follows that Ichigo's devloping powers imply a black sun as the next step past swastika.

But like I said, that's a super loose correlation within the text itself. Rather, the black sun in Bleach actually seems to be a weird recycling of something Kubo did in Zombie Powder: The black getsuga tenshou's black flame motif being a kind of throwback to the black flames of Akutabi Gamma's Karinzanjutsu, and the Ka-rin[火輪]: "Fire Ring/Wheel" having a symbol representing the sun, thus the sword style's black flames making its symbol a black sun.

So what's the point in bringing all this back up if what we're asking about is Yoruichi? Well, Yoruichi may not have had any sort of identifiable sun motif herself, but her ancestor, Chika, does. His name can read as "1000 Sun", although in the context of Yoruichi and Yuushirou's names both having words for "night" in them, it makes sense that Chika's name should actually be read, "1,000 Days", or very possibly "1000th Day" since Yoruichi's name is clearly meant to be read as "1st Night" considering her birthday is January 1st.*
*Her overall gimmick is a reference to hatsuyume[初夢], a tradition/idea that your first dream of the newyear --taking into accounts that you stay up until midnight on new years, your first dream is on Jan 1-- is supposed to have some prophetic qualities. (Incidentally, Urahara's birthday is December 31st, and given his partnership with Yoruichi could imply he's meant to be associated with the Omisoka holiday? but I'm not getting into that here.)
Anyway... all that just to say that her sun tattoo isn't really canon but if it were, it might have something to do with her ancestor, Chika. Although given that their family crest features a moon and they have a night theme to naming, I'd assume Chika's name is meant to be kind of an outlier rather than directly reflective of any family themes.
I dunno, I guess that's not really much of anything actually, since the whole black sun tangent doesn't even link back around... I guess the only thematic link is that in rather literal terms a "black sun" might be most readily envisioned as an eclipse, which in both the Shihouin and Ichigo's cases would be a way of aligning the moon and sun motifs.
(Technically I guess Isshin's relationship with Masaki is a kind of eclipse, as its the overlap of her sun/center of the universe iconography with Isshin's own moon motif via engetsu, but honestly Isshin was never actually moon themed and his shikai just felt like a lazy tack on detail that Kubo gave no real thought or consideration to beyond it being a derivative of what Ichigo already had going on.)

I dunno- this and into the woods is my favorite musicals and I’ve had traffic brain rot for AGESSS and I was finally re-listening to Hadestown and this absolute fever dream of an idea dawned on me during hey little song bird

Eurydice- Jimmy Solidarity ✨the canary✨ you see the vision. This (joke?) is what started this whole thing so.
Orpheus- Still deciding between Scott and Tango
Tango pros:
- They are soulmates
- the goat horns are kinda vaguely like music/an instrument 👀
- ranchers duo is SO SWEET always
- their lives are tethered which in a way fits the story of the show and the myth.
- idk i just like this idea
- why are you still here? It’s over. Go home.
- c!jimmy seems to be on better terms with c!tango than c!scott soooo
Scott pros:
- they were husbands, Jimmy died first tragically (very accurate to original myth)
- THE FLOWER MOTIF- specifically a red flower. It’s just so perfect
- they saw each other in the afterlife
- Scott is always attached to flower husbands which seems fitting
- he likes to sing? Empires musical? I don’t know but it seems like it works
-flower husbands and desert duo have connections (you will see why this is important)
So yeah leaning towards tango for the vibes but leaning towards Scott for actual similarities in plot and such.
(If someone wants to say Joel or someone I will happily hear you out lol)

Hades and Persephone- c!Grian and c!Scar/desert duo. The characters were once in love and then it grew into a a more bitter relationship. There are lots of potential parallels with Hadestown older lovers and desert duo. Grian and scar also have flower/plant motifs.
Grian as hades- He is a watcher, which seems fitting. Creator of the games seems fitting for god of death and also the industrial foreman Hadestown has. Original winner.
Scar as Persephone- Now that he is a winner, I personally love the idea of him being the earth, which is perfect for the god(dess) of spring. I also think his secret life skins going from green to black is an accidental parallel.
The only real issue with this is I want to incorporate Grian being the sun but that’s contradictory;-;
Hermes- My main idea atm is Martyn. This is mostly because storytelling and lore is very connected to him and his character. Who doesn’t love some eyes and ears AU/lore
I am also considering pearl just because I like that idea, her being the moon and being connected to g and s, etc
And Ren because he is such a storyteller/theater kid
The Fates- I have several ideas for this

Hiya!!! This will be a bit of a long one but I think if anyone could write it out it's you 👉👈✨
Would you be willing to write headcanons for the glamrocks and the daycare attendants (all separate) where their S/O (the reader) has given them their phone to play music on while they work nearby, not close enough to hear what they're playing but enough that their partner can ask them questions if they get confused, because their animatronic asked about music and really has only ever listened to the things Fazcorp owns and not music from the Outside World, and said animatronic goes snooping and sees a playlist labelled with their Motif (🐻🐺🐊🐥🌕☀️) and like a whole bunch of hearts and glitter (that was clearly hidden away for some reason) that you'd clearly been trying to hide, so the animatronic decides to listen in on whatever this playlist was, especially since it seems this was about them, made long before you two had started Dating at all, and it opens up to some of the most yearningest love songs known to man. Like the sappiest, sweetest, head over heels nonsense the animatronic has ever heard. S/O isn't happy when they get back and catch their animatronic partner red handed having snooped where they weren't supposed to (almost having listened to the whole playlist), but when asked about having made the playlist that's the definition of Down Bad, they have to stutter their way through an explanation, that they were absolutely smitten with their animatronic before they'd even really become friends, and this playlist kinda put their feelings into words so they could be Normal around their animatronic.
Tldr; Mostly, I just want you to write headcanons about the animatronics listening to love songs that their s/o clearly thought fit them, and how they'd feel knowing that their most favorite human in the world wants to kiss them so bad it makes them look stupid!!

GLAMROCK CHICA headcanons:
▸ ooughh mannn,, chica discovers so much new music!! she gets very excited abt this opportunity, knowing there's more music out there she hasn't discovered! though she tries out a buncha genres, she loves LOVES bubblegum pop, classic rock, and 80s hip hop. those end up being like. her Main Faves.
▸ she's pretty innocent in her intents when she accidentally stumbles across the playlist- she really only was trying to look for other stuff to listen to anyways, and figured your playlists might give her more great music. oh she rly does trust ur taste :]
▸however,,, while browsing for more stuff to listen to, the playlist catches her eye. it's a bit hidden away, but from the title she can tell it has to do with her somehow. of course, she's reluctant- but she figures it wouldn't be all that bad to check it out. she'd just apologize if you didn't want her to see!
▸ the first song begins to play and she listens- it's catchy and upbeat, sort of bedroom pop type vibe with sappy sweet lyrics. she finds herself nodding along to rhythm happily. hwo could she not love such a cutesy song?
▸ she doesn't even know the playlist is filled with love songs until she's midway through it. chica's fr like
"hm. maybe i'm sensing a pattern,,,,," (SHE'S A LITTLE DITZY BUT PLEASE SHE'S TRYING)
▸ but the second it hits her- the second she realizes why you made it, she cannot hold back from reacting out loud. her sudden squeal diverts your attention from your task at hand to her immediately.
"AAAA YOU MADE THIS FOR ME??? THATS SO SWEET OF U!!!"
"WHAT."
▸ you immediately figure out what she's talking about. sure the reaction is very, VERY bubbly and cute but it doesn't stop the heating of your face. you approach her, taking the phone and try to explain yourself, stuttering through every word- and she shushes u, sparing you of an explanation. chica pulls you into a tight hug, gushing about how much of a sweetheart you are. she is then very eager to ask if you'd let her make a playlist for u.

"aaalmost! just you wait- i wanna make it perfect!"
she's had your phone for a while now. you can't help but wonder how long the playlist is going to end up at this rate. still, she gives you a smile and a wink when you glance to her, signaling you just to wait a bit longer.
maybe a perfect playlist would be worth the time waiting.

GLAMROCK FREDDY headcanons:
▸ very interested in music beyond what fazcorp provides. instead of choosing songs at random, he checks through genres and tries out certain artists' discographies. he is Very Specific w/ trying new music. anyways! he endz up enjoying music by david bowie, elton john, and queen.
▸ freddy is quite curious about learning about the music he's listening to. he'll occasionally do a quick google search on the bands and singers he's listening to. sometimes, he'll just ask you the question himself.
"superstar? who is hatsune miku?"
▸ on one hand, freddy's so pumped to find music from the outside world. on the other hand. oh man. SO UPSET he can't listen to this stuff when he wants to on demand. bro doesn't have a phone </3
▸ gonna be real he didnt even mean to snoop around your phone all that much. he just happened upon your little playlist after trying to find a song you recommended him based on his new favorite artists.
he locatez tha playlist, and on first glance, doesn't really get why there's a playlist for him (which was made before you two were even together). were u just a really big fan??? once he scrolls through the songs and listens to a couple- he gets the message. and he is practically melting.
▸ a little anxious to tell you he found it though, considering if you wanted him to see it, you probably would have shown it to him. he doesn't wanna go through your private stuff- even if he just found a cute little playlist. the last thing he wants is to invade your privacy. he wants to respect boundaries as MUCH AS POSSIBLE. and ough. perhaps checking out your other playlists was not very respectful of him.
▸ regardless of his hesitance to tell you, he's very honest about it. not really one for lying. he tries to mention it in a non chalant way so you don't freak out (you do) and he doesn't get sent into a guilt spiral (he does)
he awkwardly hands you back the phone, trying to collect himself for a second before facing you.

▸ at first, roxy seems not to show much interest in checking out more music. you decide to play some music for her anyways- and later find her checking out some songs for herself.
▸ yeah, of course she likes glamrock- but wow. the real stuff is nothing quite like what fazcorp makes them perform. it's better.
along with glamrock, she likes punk music, midwest emo, alt rock- but. yo. she finds my chemical romance and goes insane. bro listens to one mcr song and immediately:

▸ (on behalf of all the victims of the monty fans on tiktok, i will not be mentioning closer by nine inch nails. yes i know the amount of thirst traps created under this song for this character. i do not need to relive that event. /j /lh for the record he probably does find it and enjoy it though. im sincerely sorry.) loves a lot of music, similar to roxanne's taste but less pop-y and a little more underground. he's very specific.
▸ boys don't cry by the cure is the first song he hears, and is INSISTENT on getting to listen to more music that fazcorp doesn't have control over. it's a whole world of music out there- and lucky for him, you're lettin him experience it!!! ^_^
▸ you hand over your phone and surprisingly, his claws do in fact work with the touchscreen. huh. didn't expect that.
he finds a ton of new music he likes, probably creating a playlist of his own so he can relisten if you ever give him your phone again. on occasion, he'll ask you your opinion on a song he finds before playing it. he trusts your taste in music. just little random questions about certain artists. some of which, you don't know how to explain.

he is very overwhelmed by All The Noises of hyperpop. decides it is not for him, but. hm. interesting to listen to.
▸ suprisingly, monty wasn't even trying to uncover any hidden playlists. he just happened to wanna see which music you enjoyed and bam. playlist with gator emoji. his stupid ass doesn't even realize its for him specifically. his thought process is just "oh?? music for gators??? i am gator. music for me." and clicks it.
▸ four songs in, he does recognize that it's a playlist of love songs- all the songs are sugar sweet, and he can't stop glancing down at the phone, and then back up at you.
he's a little confused though. based on the date it was made, you two weren't together- why would you have made thi-

▸ ok so he's not very subtle at all. the minute it clicks he IMMEDIATELY TELLS YOU HE FOUND IT. he has barely gotten through the thing and is already exposing the fact that he found a playlist you were definitely hiding from him.

he raises the phone's volume, turning the screen over to you to show you what he's listening to. it doesn't take you long to register what's happening.

it takes a moment for both of you to stop overheating before he shuts you up. you're trying to explain, stammering and shaking, pacing back an forth while all he can muster is a slightly amused, slightly flustered "uh huh.." to each of your attempted clarifications.
he then, proceeded to tease you even more than roxanne would've. though he laughs at how mortified you seem to be, it's hard for him to deny how much you made him feel.
it was a strange feeling, being so cared for. he doesn't know how to explain how glad he was to have found the playlist, or how to express his adoration for you. monty isn't exactly the best with words after all.
once you manage to grab your phone back, and his loud laughter dies down, there's a small quiet moment between the two of you.
"it's a good playlist, y'know." he mumbled sheepishly. "...would love to hear the rest of it sometime."
he totally bragged about it to the rest of the glamrocks by the way.
SUN headcanons:
▸ be nice to the guy,,,, if u had just discovered more music beyond the daycare theme and the occassional music you could sort of hear from the glamrocks, maybe you'd also have shit music taste. /lh
you find that sun's music taste is... eccentric. certainly very subjective and niche but. yknow. whatever. he seems to have a talent for finding obscure songs??? like. really easily. he just stumbles across them and enjoys them.
▸ the music he enjoys tends to encapsulate his energy very well. silly, lighthearted songs. some which uh,, may not be quality (this part does NOT apply to sun), but they're FUN. just. listen to all those goofy ass noises in the daycare theme and tell me im wrong. he also finds veggietales and you practically have to beg him to listen to something other than silly songs with larry
▸ accidentally goes a little overboard with random song selection. likes to skip into the middle parts of songs instead of listening from start to end. has a habit of looping songs a ridiculous amount of times if he enjoys or skipping them early if he decided thirty seconds in that He Doesnt Enjoy them.
▸ and then accidentally blasts death metal. full volume. an opportune moment to teach him about the volume button!

now, everytime you've got a break by the end of the day and choose to spend it with him, he'll beg request that you play that cute little playlist you made for him. song after song, he pleads with you to play "just one more" before you've lost track of how many you've gone through.
"here, if i give you my phone, you can listen to the rest. i gotta get back to actually doing my job." you smile, handing over your phone. he holds it for a second- before giving it right back to you.
you raise an eyebrow, confused. wasn't he just begging you to listen to it? why doesn't he want to anymore?
with a smile, he explains with a level of sincerity that tugs at your heartstrings. "i like listening to it a lot more when you're around!"
MOON headcanons:
▸ you're the one who suggests letting him listen to a few tunes- at first, he really doesn't see the point. he seems indifferent when it come to music but curiosity, however, wins him over.
▸ he doesn't... really know where to start. unlike sun, who went pressing on every song which had a fun title or cool album cover- he just kind of stares at the screen for a bit. it takes some guidance and song reccomendations to actually get him listening.
moon doesn't ask many questions when listening. he takes a bit to go through options and pick-and once he does play one, listens to it start to end in complete silence.
▸ during all of this, you note that he has no genre preference, but seems to gravitate towards softer songs. (this is fully just me being a fan of the moldy peaches but. idk. i think moon would like their songs too.)
"I kiss you on the brain in the shadow of a train I kiss you all starry eyed, my body's swinging from side to side I don't see what anyone can see in anyone else But you..."
the song plays in the silence. once it ends, moon considers it for a second- and you smile as you hear him replay it. it's kind of sweet really. though he makes very little comment on the songs he listens to, you really can tell when he enjoys them or not.
▸ a couple songs in, and he's wondering what playlists you've made. you don't mind this at first, knowing he certainly wont find The Playlist. he tries out a few playlists- finds a few songs he likes, moves on. wash, rinse, repeat.
and then He Finds It.
▸ he's quiet about it. real careful not to make too much of a fuss so you don't know that he's found it. he begins listening through, wondering what type of songs you could have possibly added for a playlist created for him.
and is immediately struck with the revelation of why you created it.
▸ once he gets through all of it, and you're done your job- he hands back your phone with no intention to tell you he found the playlist.
however,, one glance at your listening history and you figure out exactly what he was up to. tucking the phone securely into the pocket of your pants, you confront him.

"you're mad." he comments, watching you struggle to form words correctly.
"you know i'm not mad." the blood rushing to your cheeks makes it incredibly hard to think. "i just- you know that- it's just that- when i made that playlist, i didn't think you'd find it- not like it's bad that you found it! okay, maybe a little bad- but- but- i'm not mad! it's just- that- um- when-"
the sound of your own voice becomes insufferable to you, as you try to clear things up. he lifts a finger and presses it to your lips, effectively shushing you.
he cackles a little- and it becomes apparent he only wanted to watch you squirm as you attempted to explain.
it then becomes very tempting to bite his finger clean off. moon's a bastard.
"secrets must not be kept." he chided. the glint in his eyes told you he was entertained by all of this.
your nose scrunches at this, mumbling under your breath, "well it's not much of a secret if we're already dating-"
"hush."
he loops an arm around you, pulling you close. his other hand, reaches up to pat your head. you were embarrassed- not about to cry. still, you weren't denying it was comfortable in his arms. you rested your head on his chest.
a few seconds pass. you finally decide to pull away from the embrace, before mouthing him a quick thank you.
your work is over, and with that, you're about to turn away and leave for the day- but the sudden weightlessness in your pockets makes your heart drop.
a crackle of laughter from his voicebox is heard, as he slowly reveals your phone in his hands.
you make a grab at it- and he is hoisted up by his cord into the air and very much out of your reach.
your ears can barely make out the first song on the playlist beginning. you open your mouth to protest, but he interrupts.
"i'm not done with this."

OK, SEVERELY rambly post incoming but - Anderperry Stardust (2007)/ The Little White Horse AU, anyone?
Rundown: I think many of us are familiar with Stardust, originally a Neil Gaiman book but also a great film, starring Claire Danes as a falling star and That Guy Who Plays Daredevil as the lad who promises to bring her to the girl he's infatuated with. The Little White Horse is, to the best of my knowledge, more unknown, but equally very good (for sentimental reasons, I think of it much more highly than Stardust). Published in 1946 by Elizabeth Goudge, it tells the story of thirteen-year-old orphan Maria Merryweather, who moves to her cousin Sir Benjamin's Moonacre Manor in the West Country, where she finds a) a thriving cosy community and a long family history, b) the little white horse of the title, c) a longstanding family feud cutting off Moonacre from the sea, d) her imaginary best friend Robin, real and in the flesh, and e) some of the most deliciously-described food that has ever been or will be. It's a great book even past the rose-tinted glasses of my childhood. Go read it. (The one (1) marring is that you can't find a bloody edition that doesn't have a JK Terfling quote pasted onto the cover, because apparently it was one of her favourite books, but fuck OFF, I'm reclaiming it now. Thou shalt not keep the cosy low fantasy from me.)
Anyway even though I mention Stardust this isn't really part of the AU I have in my mind, except for the bit with the Star, because Todd as a main character who thinks he's a very forgettable bland boy-in-the-corner until he finds out he's a star is a great thought to me. Particulars on /how/ he's a star to be fleshed out later! (I only thought of this AU about two hours ago, lol.)
In my mind this is how it goes - nebulously Olden Times setting (TLWH is set in 1842, so perhaps then). Todd is around seventeen/eighteen and Geoff has just graduated from university, and gone off around Europe, accompanied by their parents. Months go by. Something happens - he's never given the liberty of knowing, but Geoff and their parents stay in Europe, and the townhouse in London is sold, and Todd is packed off to stay at a distant relative's - Keating, as it turns out. It's a blessing in disguise, because Todd is finally away from his family for the first time in his life and around people that appreciate him. He begins to bloom under this new care - but there are strange family secrets only now being revealed to him, and dark forces beyond the valley which threaten to disrupt the haven he's found...
The rest is very cosy fantasy, featuring Mr Perry as the local uptight vicar locking horns with Keating at every opportunity, Neil as his withdrawn but friendly son just longing for a rebellion, and more! (Read: Charlie is here and he is Outrageous as usual. Read also: Pitts as a sailor because I think he'd like it.) Right now I'm thinking of adding an equivalent of Monsieur Cocq de Noir for a villain (Mr Perry is NOT the villain), and Cameron can play a part there so I can give him a good redeeming! Here are a couple of extracts from TLWH to show the kind of mood/tone we're working with:

Thematically, I REALLY like the idea of Todd as a star because it allows me to work in a very fun trope, of "not of the rose but near the rose" - when a character perhaps is shy and a little quiet and reclusive, but inspires other people around them to brilliance and greatness. (Honestly I do think this kind of goes in with the film, where it's not just Keating's teaching but Todd's reaction to it and his presence that galvanise Neil to continue.) This ties in really well if Todd's a star and adds to the overall self-confidence journey - plus I was really thinking about the sun/moon motifs! They're very prominent in TLWH (Maria is a "moon" Merryweather and Robin is a very sunny boy), and I really want to implement them here with slight twists. I think of Todd as a sunny moon; yes he's warm and caring and cheerful but once you go a little closer it's more of a luminosity rather than a blaze, there's a coolness and quietness to him I like. You know, a quiet character doesn't always have to be quiet because there's something "wrong" with them, sometimes they're just like that. For Neil it's the opposite, he's a moony sun; under the thumb of his father he's polite and decorous and demure but somewhere under all of that there's a very loud and booming laugh and a healthy sort of ruddiness. I don't know, I just like sun/moon motifs!!!!!!!!!!
(On a more personal note: this AU, which I already love very much despite not having known very long, would be above all a careful love letter to the West Country. It's been lovely living around here almost all my life and by this time in September I'll be hopefully up very far north at uni, so I'm pre-emptively kind of :') about it. Mutuals who are at uni/college how on earth did you cope?)

sometimes i feel like swapinverse deviates too much from the concept i originally had (which is that character A goes through events that lead them to having one or more traits of character B) but then i remember that this is all not canon and this is MY CANON and it's all artistic liberty and i have free reign to change things if i think they're too boring or i just want a different aesthetic
nooo stop you can't change logic about the tree of feelings and make it so that the villagers are less hateful as a result to nightmare (melpomene :3) and then also have inspiration from greece that's weird- SHUT UP!!!!! if i want them being named after greek muses and gods and wear drapy loosely inspired clothing then i WILL!!!! normal dreamtale is too boring anyways it's just the sun and moon themes. there's a point where you can't just squeeze in sun and moon symbols without it getting repetitive and trashy
noooo stop you can't completely change the events of xtale/underverse and basically make cross (crash xD) a different character- YES I CAN!!!!!!!!! i mean like what the hell would even happen to xtale if ink didn't exist anyways. xgaster would kill himself?? THAT'S BORING and i needed to find a way to keep xgaster alive so cross can at least somewhat come fron xtale. anyways crash (and also siphon but he's a completely different story that doesn't deviate TOO much) feel very outlierish to me in terms of what they do (since they don't directly do what their character B traits are, those are just a byproduct of their actions)
nooooo stop you can't give killer angel motifs and make him wear a random ass blindfold for no reason- YES THE FUCK I CAN YES I CAN!!!!! i didn't even have a reason for this i just really wanted him to be angel themed when i came up with the NAME savior (what's the opposite of killing? life. okay but i can't just fucking name this killer "liver" that's weird. i can't name him VICTIM either that's just strange especially considering this character concept. so what else is there? i could use kill on its own and search up antonyms. the strongest antonym of kill on thesaurus.com is save. boom SAVIOR) and then i RAN with the savior concept because if i'm gonna have a character literally named savior with a warped savior complex then i might as well go all in on the angel motifs because im out of ideas on unique design concepts

I know everyone and their mother who knows the song associates The Moon Will Sing by The Crane Wives with shadowpeach, and I do too, but the second half always makes me think of Wukong and MK (platonicly ofc)
Shadow Play really hammered down the light V darkness motif LMK has going on (connecting it specifically to the the Hero V the Warrior), so when a song also has a light V darkness motif it's easy to draw those lines you know. ANYWAYS

Do you think the Ever After could act as a parallel to the Garden of Eden?
you know what. asking me this when my latest post leads with me identifying myself as an evangelical apostate and after i’ve been caterwauling again about how rwby isn’t a christian narrative is kind of a power move, ngl. all biblical quotations to follow are from the NASB 1995.
one sidebar i want to make before getting properly into the actual topic of the garden, because it’s something i’ve been mulling over, is the absence from rwby’s cosmological mythos of a primordial ocean. that’s an interesting omission because of how common a motif it is in real-world mythology, christianity included. (In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. […] Then God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” God made the expanse, and separated the waters which were below the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. Gen. 1:1-2,6-7)
i’ve mentioned a handful of times before that rwby takes some noticeable cues from hellenistic philosophy and in particular heraclitus is pretty visible in the ever after—which is salient to the absence of a primordial ocean because the interior of the tree strikes me as a cosmic river flowing both from and around the everliving fire of the forge. see fragments B12, B30, B31, B36, B91, here is a general summary.
this has very little to do with the garden of eden question beyond the, like, broad comment that if analytical comparison between rwby and real world mythological and philosophical traditions is something that interests you generally, peruse what very little remains of heraclitus and also read plato’s timaeus and critias, because the influence is pretty strong.
anyway. back to genesis. the biblical story of creation goes like this:
on the first day, the deity speaks light into being, illuminating the formless waters of the void, and separates the night from the day.
on the second day, he creates a separation between the waters, above and below, and names the waters above the heavens.
on the third day, he parts the waters below and gathers them all into one place, drawing up the earth, which he calls the land and the sea. then he bids the land to become lush with vegetation.
on the fourth day, he creates the sun and the moon and all the stars to govern the passage of time, to mark the days and the seasons and the years, bringing order to the separation between night and day.
on the fifth day, he speaks into being all the creatures of the sea and the sky, the fish and the birds. (and this is no more arbitrary than the creation of the land together with vegetation; the air, remember, is the separation between the waters above and the waters below.)
on the sixth day, he creates all the animals that roam the land, and then he creates humankind in his own image, to “rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (1:26)
and on the seventh day, he rests, and sanctifies the day.
ok. so, i’m not going to get into the weeds of christian theology (<- apostate) so our engagement with genesis here is strictly as a literary text. with that in mind, there are two things i want to make note of:
first, that the biblical creation story is fundamentally about categorization: the deity creates things by naming them and the work of creation is made possible by the separation and definition of what had been a nameless and formless void. the deity first differentiates between day and night, water below and water above (separated by air), land from sea, and then systematically creates things to fill each new category. each day ends with the deity examining what he has made in order to determine that it’s good, and all the living creatures are instructed to “be fruitful and multiply,” in accordance with “their kind,” which is to say that all things are supposed to remain in their categories.
second, that the deity creates the celestial bodies to govern the heavens; he creates plants first, then animals, and to the animals he gives the plants; and lastly he creates man and woman in his own image to govern the whole of creation. the creation of the world itself is indistinguishable from the creation of a natural hierarchy: each new creation is given authority over what came before.
while there are some loose similarities here with how the ever after as it exists now came to be (in that one could make an argument for the separations of the primordial ocean as being akin to the clearing of the wilderness), the fundamental ideas articulated in genesis 1 and in rwby regarding the ever after are diametrically opposed: the notion of an inviolate natural order is, in rwby, textually rejected. balance “cannot be restored by force or calculation” because it “finds its own equilibrium”—and of course the whole point of ascension is that things do not need to remain as they are if they would rather be something else. a girl could become a cat, if she wanted to. the ever after is preoccupied not with designated purpose but chosen purpose, whereas the biblical creation myth is about the designation of purpose.
nevertheless there IS a clear parallel to draw here—between the biblical deity and the god of light. (this is where i stress, again, that i am not making a theological argument but a literary one.) consider the creation story of ‘the two brothers’ as it is told in the fairytale anthology:
first, the primordial dragon separates himself into light and dark.
second, the brothers create the heavens (celestial bodies) and the land.
third, they create animals (and grimm). it is at this point they begin to quarrel, because they cannot agree on whether dark’s contributions are good or bad.
fourth, they decide—to settle the argument—to create a new kind of being in their own image, capable of reason and will, which they agree will be given the freedom to “rule or ruin this world we have made for them.”
fifth, they fail catastrophically to leave well enough alone, fight about it, and go to sleep with the intention of judging humanity’s worth when they awake.
the similarity between this creation story and genesis 1 is much more pronounced, with the crucial difference being that the brothers, unlike the singular deity of the biblical story, cannot come to an agreement on what the natural order should be: every time one of them looks at what they’ve created and deems it good, the other disagrees and changes it.
revelations about their origin in V9 provided a great deal of context to their disagreement and vindicated me on the matter of dark not being the one who’s ultimately causing the problem; the details do not matter particularly to this discussion. the salient point is that light approaches the act of creation in the same manner as the biblical deity, but he exists in a cosmos to which that notion of inviolate, deliberate order is anathema. he is in the wrong story in a very literal sense.
now, insofar as the ever after might be intended as a kind of eden it would have to be for the brothers, yes? because they are the first emanations of the tree and the ever after is theirs to cultivate until their departure. and bearing in mind that at the heart of the narrative conflict is light being, in essence, the biblical deity transposed into a cosmos whose fundamental reality is diametrically opposed to the fundamental reality of biblical myth, there is an interesting angle to tease out here because:
Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” (Gen 2:15-17)
and
The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked. (3:2-7a)
and
Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life. (3:22-24)
again, there are loose parallels one could draw here with the blacksmith’s tale of the brothers, but the ever after simply does not function the way eden does: no part of the ever after is forbidden to the brothers and their departure from the garden is a gift, rather than a punishment. but consider the beats of the fall of man in the context of how light sees himself.
the temptation of the forbidden fruit is the temptation of divine knowledge—of becoming knowledgeable, and thus becoming godlike. the deity curses adam and eve to punish their disobedience, but that is not why they are cast out: they are made to leave because they have become like gods, and the deity does not want them to eat of the fruit of the tree of life. the expulsion from eden is a precautionary measure to ensure that humans continue to be mortal now that they have the capacity to understand (and thus fear) death.
now lay that against light’s perspective of the events leading up to his and his brother’s departure from the garden: they grew curious. they wanted to do more. they made the cat in deepest secrecy, and learned that they could make things to do their jobs for them. they make the jabberwalker—but he turns out wrong. they have introduced death into this world. their eyes are opened—they become gods. jabber is their fruit of knowledge. light (like adam, like eve) reacts to his newfound understanding with fear and shame, and tries to erase jabber for the same reason adam and eve scramble to hide their nakedness.
but creating jabber was not a sin. that is the critical difference: the tree does not judge or condemn; jabber and the cat find their places in the ever after and the tree gives the brothers a door to other realms where they can blossom into their divinity. the fear and shame light feels is his own creation—a self-inflicted curse—one he passes down to all his creations in the form of death as ending instead of change. his exile from the garden demands that the permanence of death be codified as a natural law, for the same reason that adam and eve are sent away from eden clothed. who told you that you are naked? who told you that things can die?
nothing guards the ever after’s door. light could return whenever he wished; but he cannot return because his own shame and his fear of what he created forbid it. how this is carried to its conclusion remains to be seen—although it seems inevitable that light will ascend, because he desperately needs to for his own and for remnant’s sake—but i do think rwby is doing something really interesting here with light in relation to biblical creation and the fall of man.
to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge is to become like god; the last act of creation is human defiance and apotheosis, and the experience of apotheosis is the creation of shame. for light both the defiance and the shame are illusory but, to him, deeply and painfully real, and this shame is at the center of him. he is eve who became god and exiled himself from his own garden.

This is so many questions!! I am gonna have to go a little shorter for each of them, but thank you for your interests lmao.

The Fool – What do the earliest stages of work on a game look like for you? OR How did you get into game design?
Games start one of two ways for me: either I think "there should be a game that feels like X" or I think "I want to write about Y and I think for one reason or another a game is a place to do it." That second option is usually just the first option wearing sunglasses, anyway — since the main reason I might write something as a game (rather than a poem, short story, etc) is to try and get that experiential edge, where I'm not just conveying what I'm thinking to you but you the reader/player can dig around in it (and see why I feel a way about something). Then I start writing. Usually pretty freeform. Lots of lists of things. Lots of stream of consciousness "I want it to do this so therefore it must include that" until I start to get a better picture of what the game is going to be.
The Empress — Where do your ideas come from? OR Do you seek out or avoid inspiration while working on an idea?
I love nothing more than to dig into an inspiration while I'm working on a project. I like to surround myself with as much aligned stimuli as I can — recently I've been reading Piranesi and Doug Cowan's Cyberhenge and Drawing Down the Moon and listening to a lot of wizard themed hyperpop, for example. You can guess where I might be going with that. Let me drown in the thing I am thinking about, please.
And then credit my inspirations, of course.
The Hierophant — Who is a fellow game designer you’ve learned a lot from? OR What is a piece of popular wisdom about games you think is nonsense?
This is straying a little bit from the prompt, but: I fucking hate it when people try to frame the TTRPG design world as a family / community / whatever. Shut the fuck up. At TTRPGs best they're a scene and at the worst they're an (unregulated and monopolized) industry. I have communities and families within that, but they're not people I'm going to reach with a tag.
The Chariot — What is the next project you’re planning to start OR What is the next project you’re excited to finish?
I mentioned this in another response, but. I've been thinking a lot about wizards lately. Alchemists. Notetaking. Esoterica. A lot of this is: it's summer and I'm not getting my grad school itch scratched, but I've got something new that I just need to polish up a bit... A game I think y'all sickos would enjoy.
Also a Lemony Snicket thing, but that's another story.
The Hanged Man — What other creative pursuits do you have? OR What current trends in game design are you most interested in?
I think we're due for another hackable and misunderstandable system pretty soon, a la PBTA or BITD or NDNM or whatever. Feels like the cutting edge of design has moved on from those things — while still keeping their lessons in mind — and we just need something to blow up in the right way that we end up coining a new term for it. I can feel it coming, I'm just not sure where.
Oh, and One D&D launch is gonna be a mess. The post-CR D&D boom hasn't had to live through an edition change yet. No idea what that's gonna look like, but I can't wait.
The Devil — What motifs or mechanics do you just keep coming back to? OR What is a game you’ve enjoyed playing in the last year?
I played some Wizard's Grimoire (issue 1, but all of them look cool as shit) with a friend recently. Good game for laying on a couch and daydreaming magic boys.
The Tower — Talk about about a game you tried to make that crashed and burned.
When I was maybe a freshman in college — in fact I can remember working on it in 2017 — I wanted to write a PBTA game about paladins of different creeds slamming into each other. It sucked. I didn't know how to write games yet and it came out looking like worse Dungeon World. I'm glad it doesn't exist anywhere.

The Star — Talk about a game you’re working on and what excites you about it.
I've been tinkering with some ideas for a multiple-player one-character Disco Elysium-ish game about plurality and inner dialogues. It's fun to roll around in my head! Not sure if I'll ever end up making it, but thinking about ways to mechanize squabbling for authorial control — i.e. to let you play as several people fighting to front — has been a lot of fun.
The Sun — Talk about a game you’ve made that you’re proud of.
Book of 13 Hours. I did some spells with a friend recently and love them. And I talked to the lake I've been stay next to for the last week or so. Good game. Good magic.

satoru is like me i think <33 he doesn’t have any real desire to get married, and arigojo is also a mega slowburn so??? yk. it’s not exactly a standard relationship!! i also feel like he’s turned off from marriage because of how awful most clan marriages are in jjk…… he doesn’t want me legally becoming a gojo. :((((( but like we talked abt…. i think he still ends up asking me if i’d like to be with him forever 🥹 and he buys rings!! because he likes it when we match…. super expensive and custom made. maybe a sun/moon motif? the issue is that we both see each other as the sun so???? it’s . a week-long debate. buuuut yeah he just buys us the rings and everyone else is like …. did you . get married to gojo 🤨🤨 ………….. and it’s not Exactly true but we’re married in spirit yk??
anyway just to tie this back to the first point…….. even though we aren’t legally married he takes my last name :33 and gets upset when people refer to him as gojo . he’s lenient with the students but poor ijichi gets the MEANEST side eye (nobody told him 💔💔💔)
ANYWAYYY TGAT WAS. a lot of gojo. next is suguru and like we discussed <3333 i think this guy is very much the marriage type. he daydreams about it. he loves the idea of being my husband and loves the idea of me being his spouse……. silly little sappy loser. thankfully he’d prefer a small, private wedding, which is the only kind i’d be comfy with 😭 we end up reaching a compromise and only inviting the most important people (satoshoko :333) it’s cozy and intimate and we both cry LMAOOO i hate him actually take him away from me mickey….. he cries while proposing too…….

ok enough abt the loser men let’s talk abt the loser Women <3333 shoko is just like me fr i don’t think she’s interested in marriage at all but for some reason i do feel like we’d end up legally married??? like…… we just kinda sign the papers one day and that’s that. i propose to her with a ring pop and she’s like okay let’s do it???? and who am i to deny my wife…….. she does eventually get us proper rings and only then do the people around us realize we’re married LMAOO (gojo owes suguru 20$) she also wants to see me in a wedding dress i think… just once………..
OHHH AND AND AND if we’re talking abt sashisuri as a polyship then i think we do get married :33 um. we might have to legally get married in pairs though…. not sure if polyamorous marriage is a thing in either of our countries……… no idea who marries who but it doesn’t really matter because we’re All married, y’know?? it’s either a full-on wedding with lots of our shared friends or just the four of us lol, no inbetween <333 it feels more like a cozy party than anything!!!!!

BUT they do verbalize the sentiment at some point!! either in a really casual way (”we have a whole lifetime to figure it out,” or something else that implies they want me around forever) or something more akin to a proposal…… ”wouldn’t it be nice to do this forever? what do you say?” or maybe just ”you’ll be by my side until the moment you die.” which . sounds pretty awful right?? they mean it in a romantic way though. idk mickey they’re severely ill idk what to do with them
