When it comes to prison abolition I wish people would focus on specific crimes or types of crimes instead of this binary approach. There seems to be no space for nuance in western leftist thought these days, you have to go all the way in one go or it isn't worth doing.

Okay the current system isn't perfect but it's better than letting pedos, rapists and sex traffickers get away with continuing to abuse women and girls. Domestic violence too, there's just so many areas where justice already doesn't exist for victims. Until abolitionists can provide a good answer for those crimes they should admit that their theory doesn't yet work in every scenario.

Let's go back to focusing on drugs, theft and other crimes against corporations, the imprisonment of those suffering from severe mental illnesses and general anti social behaviour. Crimes where imprisonment does unjustly impact people's lives and we do already have noncustodial solutions we can implement.

but then prison abolitions want to take it to such...... levels that it stops making sense. to an extent i get it, like i definitely get wanting to abolish the system and implement something new, the issue is that that "something new" makes little sense when you hear them speak. because they define annny form of incarceration or being restricted in movement as prison essentially, and we must get rid of that. so, frankly, by their own logic i dont even know if they could force rapists and pedophiles into """"recovery programs""" for any period of time - maybe theyd just let them go immediately and theyd have to voluntarly show up our of their own good will 🥺 (im sure thats gonna happen) - because anything else would be taking away their bodily autonomy.. ...really, truly, even though these ppl call themselves leftists this is such a ??? western individualistic opinion to hold?? like putting individual bodily autonomy and "rights" in any damn case, no matter how dangerous, above the wellbeing of society at large strikes me v v much as western individulism taken to an extreme

Several native american tribes had quite physically harsh and borderline torturous forms of physical punishment for what they deemed to be crimes, or would exile ppl (which in certain cases, like in winter, may as well have been a death sentence for some). In phillipines before colonialization for certain communities the punishment for rape was death. For gods sake islam too,,,, like,,, have these ppl never read qur'an and seen that physical punishment is one of the forms of punishment prescribed for certain offenses which are seen as affecting community negativity? Theres obviously a million other examples out there. I dont know what these people are smoking to think that the concept of "actions have consequences" was invented by the white man or whatever

I cannot express enough that if your reaction, as a hobby artist, to not getting that many notes on your art is to say "maybe I should just stop doing art altogether" you need to stop posting art to tumblr

not necessarily forever, not even for long, but just stop putting your art on here and start doing it for you again, remember why you enjoyed doing art in the first place and stop relying on the attention of faceless people on the internet for your enjoyment of your hard work

believe me, I get it, nothing crushes the artistic soul quite like labouring for hours on a piece only for it to get like 10 notes, so you need to find your own source of joy in the act of creation and a lot of the time that means making art and not showing it to anybody

I would like to say I don’t understand why this shit keeps happening, but I actually do understand it way too well. It just makes me so sad and angry. Especially on a site where people find and make their communities.

So much of this is about ego, and the people with power wielding that power to protect themselves and failing to protect others with it. A mere hint of negative sentiment towards them is harassment that is dealt with immediately and harshly, but a dozen complaints about discrimination or threats or bullying take ages to process and frequently come to unsatisfactory moderation decisions.

Whatever the sentiments of the people running this hellsite, you are always welcome in my corner of the internet, wherever you find it. You are all wonderful, and we all deserve to feel that part of this space belongs to us and those to whom we can connect.

question for you!! ive been doing some research on bows to draw and write about the character pictured below, the huntress from shattered pixel dungeon. i was wondering if you knew what type of bow would be closest to the one pictured in this art? i can't find any that curve so sharply that don't also have more than one string, and at this point i wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't one at all. thank you!!! i love your videos by the way they make excellent drawing practice :]

Ok, sorry @themichaelvan, I'm gonna piggyback a rant onto your ask.

One of the curses of being highly invested in a topic is that you start to get uncanny valley much more easily when you see it represented.

A lot of drawn or animated bows suffer from one of 3 problems:

1: the bow is shown at rest in a shape that just doesn't have enough length in the string/limbs to reach full draw (as in the above case)

2: the bow is shown at full draw in a way that could never return to a resting position (usually because the string is way too long, resulting from drawing the limbs too close to their resting position- see below)

Think about how long that string would be if it was straightened. There's no way the limbs of that bow are that long.

3 (usually in fantasy/gaming): the bow is designed in such a way that the limbs simply would not bend the way they need to (usually due to being unfeasibly bulky, or made of a material- e.g. A human spine- that just doesn't have the right kind of physical properties to make a bow from.

So, discounting 3., because people who draw those usually know they're ignoring physics and don't care (in which case: that's awesome, carry on!), how do you avoid this?

Let's look at the different stages of drawing a bow:

- at rest

This is a horsebow. It's 55" end to end. The string is completely taut at rest, and the limbs have a destinctive curve, which gives them enough length to reach a 30" draw. Bows with less curve (e.g. Longbows, and the one in the ask) would need to be a lot longer (68"+), to reach the same draw length.

- starting to draw

The limbs start to straighten slightly, but it's mostly in the limb tips, which frees up some string length.

-half draw

The ends of the limbs have uncurled significantly, but the curves closest to the riser (grip) are still mostly the same

-full draw (ignore my face)

The second half of the draw changes the shape more dramatically, as the central curves bend more sharply.

Notice that at each point, the tips of the bow reach mord than half of the length of the draw? If the string needs to cover more distance than the limbs, something's gone wrong!

...anyway, to answer your question, the bow in the picture is probably a recurve or horsebow, but it's a bit too small, and the string isn't far enough along.

That viral post that's going around about how people who write "book quality" mlm fic are too "normal" to publish and have real jobs so only "weird" people publish their "shitty" fanfic is so completely out of touch with reality and I am giving a massive side eye to everyone reblogging it.

Not only is it completely, easily verifiably untrue (you cannot enter any professional writing space without tripping over a dozen grizzled scifi writers who got their start by filing off the serial numbers and publishing their Star Trek fanfic even going back decades ago??? it's a whole thing?? plus how can you look at the mlm category on Amazon right now and say with a straight face that people aren't publishing shitty Spirk and Stucky fanfic??? Oh, honey...) it's also the perfect example of this kind of sneering elitism that true artists would never sully themselves by seeking profit, they do it only for the purity of the thing that always somehow leads back to, "no one should be paid to make art, actually."

The only reason you're seeing more published fanfic right now has nothing to do with the idealistic purity of your hypothetical government employee written smut of the past vs the debased scribbles of those awful straights of today and everything to do with the fact that a) self-publishing has created a voracious readership that wants a ton of content so it's become a viable, flexible income stream for many, especially disabled people b) anyone can publish now with self-publishing tools so there are less gatekeepers and c) lockdown got a lot of people into fandom and therefore writing who never tried it before.

And if you really think there's no "shitty" published mlm and no "book-quality" m/f writing out there that started as fanfic, then you are clearly not a reader so why are you even talking about this?
