Hearing the news that a new gym has just opened in my town a couple blocks away from my house, I’ve already read positive reviews of the place as the staff and trainers are knowledgable of the equipment and proper diet and exercise along with all sorts of cool workout gadgets.

Not only that they also sell pre-workouts, protein shakes, and drinks, and of course the memberships required to enter the gym.

Honestly, the membership wasn’t too bad being the price of $25 per month and I decided why the hell not?

Changing into my workout attire, I grab my duffle bag holding all of my shower needs and a change of clothes.

I get into my car, start the engine, and exit the garage, the drive to the gym was about five minutes as it was close to my house.

Making my way into the gym, I was awestruck by the decor and how nice this place looked.

Walking up to the receptionist, he greets me and asked if I had a gym membership or not.

“Uhm, this is my first time here,” I answered.

“That’s perfect because we offer a ten percent discount to newcomers for the first three months and even a trainer,” The receptionists offered.

“Sweet, it’s a deal,” I accepted and he nodded.

Completing the transaction and getting the sweet deal, he gives me an access card that lets me through the doors and instructs me to wait in room 02 for the trainer.

Sliding the card on the electronic locking mechanism, it automatically unlocks the door and when I walked through the doors, I was again amazed by the amount of people working out and the top-of-the-line gym equipment.

Looking around for the private room, I saw a sign with the label “Room 02″ and the bottom text saying “Kim Seolhyun”. Guess she must be the trainer I’ll be working with so I politely knocked on the door.

“Coming~!” I hear a female voice shout.

“Anytime! I’ll see you again tomorrow!” She waved goodbye as I left the room.

Seolhyun’s POV

“Damn, must’ve lost track of time,” I said and she chuckled.

“Yeah, that’s what happens when you work so hard, but let’s shower and get out of here,” She said and I nodded.

Walking to the men’s shower room, I was shocked to see Seolhyun following me as the Women’s shower room was down the corridor.

“What? Nobody else is here? Plus it’s closer,” She pointed out and I sighed.

for the final hundred pages of the toll, i could NOT put my book down, i was so deep into reading, everything was so vivid. and i was very entertained, as well as nervous, as well as curious. the only moment i had to pause for was when uh Greyson and the Thunderhead had their little talk

i genuinely did not see that coming, my heart started racing (and i cried a little) Tbh before I started reading the series i didn't even know there would be an AI character, but sometime during the first book, when Citra spoke to the thunderhead, I thought....oh my god... possible new AI added to my favorite AI pile??? It quickly became my favorite character during the second book, and I loved the Thunderhead and Greyson's dynamic.. so sweet, so wholesome,, I WASNT EXPECTING PAIN

makes it sadder cuz of how compliant the thunderhead was to greyson's demand. it didn't beg for forgiveness or ask greyson to think things through. it knew greyson had made a choice, and this choice - despite the pain it brought them both - was the correct choice. a truly benevolent and loving AI.

I think the thunderhead's ending is sadder than most AI stories I've read (so far) because of how strongly it feels love. Hate is a strong emotion, but so is love. The thunderhead loves humanity and does its best to make the perfect choices. It calls itself perfect, and it is, in a way.. just like it has imperfections, in a way. I think it realizes how much it longs for and how much it lacks. And it also definitely knows that its love for Greyson has influenced its life so much. So, to take that all away, and simply live with the fact that you love still, and love always, and love patiently, but hurt much worse... "I will be alone. I will be alone, but it is right that I should be. It is necessary." ARRRGHHHHWAAAHHH

anyway, i miss the thunderhead's thoughts in between chapters, but if we had gotten one for this chapter... i would be heartbroken forever

53 seconds to sunrise had me giggling... and tearing up. very bittersweet. imagining the thunderhead able to truly experience was so sweet, i thought if it had gotten a hug, it might have started screeching. (i mean it was already running in circles, my poor baby hasn't experienced everything, yet a simple sunrise and touch of a cheek makes it so giddy)

cirrus was so cute! i figured the iterations were the thunderhead (technically) speaking to itself, but like the characters, it took me a while to figure out exactly what was going on. in my head i read cirrus's voice as higher pitched than the thunderhead's, with more energy and youth. if a voice could have a color, Cirrus's voice would be yellow (at least that's how i see it.. idk if they share a same voice) i love that little AI and its constant saying of "actually, no."

Okay - I want to talk about this first. I read this last night and it made me throw up in my mouth a little. And my ultimate first reaction was that I was glad he was fired.

Honestly, I've been worried that we're headed on an AoA direction for a while now, and even though I actually am fine with the AoA comics, I just do not want it here. The thing, though, is that AoA was always meant to be undone - so if he had had his way and this was Season 3 out of 5, the idea of that doesn't bother me so much.

Granted (logically) - the fact that he's outright saying this when he's been so cryptic about everything else means that it wasn't ever on the table. Still - the guy is just a hardcore Magneto fan. I wouldn't be surprised if the (one) reason the triangle thing even happened is that he does/did like the idea of Rogneto.

Ultimately, to each their own - ship what you like. But doesn't mean I would enjoy that scenario.

Then there's this.

There's another post where he talks about using a Star Trek Next Gen episode for homework. And it's one where they're stuck in a time loop.

And it had me thinking that Rogue will get a chance to go back in time and at least tell Remy how she feels. She'll get some closure. Which is -- good for her, and I want her to not be in pain anymore.

But kinda sucks, because closure is closure, you know? And maybe dead is dead?

It's so funny because emotionally - my senses tell me that Gambit's story really is done. And that just makes me so sad to think about. They really did the thing and the door is closed and what next, we all move on and be happy? *sigh*

But then there's the logical part of me that kicks in. The one who has been to dark places with fandoms (and even this one) before. The one who knows that even Jean and Morph have been dead before and have come back. The one who knows that every time a comic book writer ends their tenure on a book there's always something the next writer will inevitably retcon.

There's no way - with all the experiences I've had with these mediums that Gambit stays dead. It's still a comic book world. And dead is dead just doesn't happen.

Last week ole Beau teased a 'I can feel you' hint. I really think this was referring to when Rogue wakes up from her coma. She was dreaming that she could feel Remy. I'm kind of surprised I haven't seen that speculation though.

So, idk - I try not to spend a whole lot of time on Twitter, and this guy is ultimately fired and doesn't control direction on the show. And there's still the comics where everything is actually going pretty well. So. I really should be normal about a cartoon.

ETA: I forgot I was going to mention the Grant Morrison influence.

If you pick up any trade of Morrison's run, he shares his outline of his original plans for New X-Men, and one of them was that he'd kill off Gambit to further Rogue's story. Now - Marvel was like, nope, Claremont wants to use them, so Morrison was denied. (And thank god, Claremont's XTreme run had some of the best Rogue/Gambit stuff in years.)

But I can't help but think that DeMayo may have been playing a little from that playbook. New X-Men has definitely been an influence on the show - from E is for Extinction to the psychic affair between Scott/Jean/Maddie. It wouldn't put it past me that the original Morrison outline that mentions killing Gambit off wasn't a least a little bit of an influence.

I know that the cardinal rule for staying sane on tumblr is “ignore opinions that you don’t agree with”, but could you elaborate on why you think scythe is terribly written? I really enjoyed it and the writing, so I’m wondering what exactly you didn’t like. I agree that main duo (Citra and Rowan) are pretty weak, but to me the rest of the trilogy more than made up for it. Feel free to ignore this if you don’t feel like answering, but I’m legitimately curious about your opinions.

Hey there! Thank you for taking time to ask despite having a different opinion. I'm afraid I won't be able to provide the most varied textual evidence because I don't personally own all of the books, but I'll do my best to make my thoughts on this clear.

I would like to preface this by saying that I don't know Neal Shusterman and I don't intend to judge his skill as a writer. These are personal complaints that I have; they are opinions. Everyone is free to like whichever authors they want to. Now without further ado:

Writing issues with the AOAS series:

1) Dialogue.

Firstly, I find that the dialogue for each character is not in any way consistent. Faraday is a great example of this. One moment, he says something dark and wise that matches his experience, and then he speaks with the same vocal patterns as a young teen.

When Mister Shusterman writes a distinctly teenage character, this also happens:

"It's just that I haven't had anyone to talk to in like, forever!"

"So should I, like, know you?"

Another issue leading to a lack of distinct character voice is that pretty much every character quips and snarks and smirks. Rand quips, Munira quips, Curie smirks, Citra smirks, Citra quips, Rowan quips (having those two snark lords paired together is certainly a choice) Jerico snarks, and even Faraday quips if my memory serves me right. If so many main characters are the witty banterers in the book, it makes them all start to lose individuality and blend together.

And hey, I'm a Marvel rat, I'm used to quips during apocalypses, but even in Marvel there are some characters who quip multiple times in almost every kind of scenario, and others who are more reserved. It's these different line choices that set them apart.

Another issue I have with the dialogue is that it sounds somewhat… cheesy? The wisdom bits sound a little pseudo-wise, and the death threats are miraculously over the top. Sometimes the narration is overly dramatic. Even some random lines that are neither proverbs nor threats just sound off.

Examples:

"So tell me, Munira… Who will you be?"

"Are you so consumed by grief that you can't consume this fish?"

"His eyes had a careworn coolness to them as if he had seen more than he should and had stopped caring in order to save what was left of his soul."

"One can never truly master the art of driving, because no journey is ever exactly the same."

"I guess whoever holds the torch casts the darkest shadow." "Whoever steals the torch, you mean." "Well, it seems I can steal whatever I want."

"Ha! Citra playing a harp! How she would hate that!"

"Tonight we witness the spectacle of human folly and tragedy. Tomorrow, we shall live it."

"To live between the prospects of an unknown, eternal sky and a dark, enveloping Earth must have been glorious— for how else could it have given rise to such magnificent expression?"

I'll mention this briefly here and dive in further later: Robert Goddard says the most insane things that are probably intended to sound menacing but only make him sound like a comic villain.

Overall, the dialogue is my biggest issue with the writing in the Scythe series, failing to convey character and sometimes distracting from the plot. I'm afraid if you compare it to dialogue from other teen books like The Queen's Thief, or even something from Lemony Snicket, it's unfortunately subpar.

2) Sentence fragments.

A sentence fragment is series of words that doesn't qualify as a full sentence because it lacks either a subject or a predicate. This is a grammatical error. Some authors, some incredibly accomplished authors, can use sentence fragments in artful and interesting ways that set a unique tone for their story. However, Mister Shusterman uses sentence fragments in inconsistent, strange bursts that leave me wondering as to the purpose of them. I don't know if these were stylistic in any way, and this makes me think they are errors. For example.

"Through all of this, Scythe Rand said nothing. She had taken a seat and was watching. Waiting to see what Rowan would do. What accusations he'd make."

I'm sorry, but this is a basic flawed cluster of sentence fragments that would be better written as

"She had taken a seat and was watching, waiting to see what Rowan would do and what accusations he would make."

Another example:

"He tried to move his wrist, but found that he couldn't. Not because of any injury, but because he was restrained. Both of his hands, and his feet as well."

This should be arranged as

"He tried to move his wrist but found that he couldn't, not because of any injury but because he was restrained; both his hands and feet were chained."

Another:

"She felt vulnerable without her robe. Naked in a fundamental way."

All that's needed to fix this is a comma between Robe and Naked. That's it. I have no idea why an editor didn't swoop in and patch that gap. It would make the flow of the narrative infinitely less choppy.

Sentence fragments can make story sound like it is stuttering, and I think this is true for the Scythe series.

3) nicknames are used to create emotional beats to an excess.

This may seem like a random, small complaint to have. But if you go through all of the Scythe books and note every abrupt name change and meaningful first-name basis, the tally is very high. I find this to be a good tool, but it's negative when used excessively.

Examples:

"Jeri told Sydney--- because now they were most certainly on a first name basis…"

This signals a sudden leap from coworkers to friends. Instead of fleshing out the time Jerico and Sydney spent together, nicknaming works to hint that time has passed and events happened. Once more, I will say that I don't hate this tool. But it's going to be used again. And again. And it does function as a summarizer, and summaries can only take a story so far.

Michael is whipped out when Mister Shusterman needs a soft moment for Curaday, same with Marie

Citra bounces between Anastasia and Citra (this is part of her identity struggle, I suppose, but it's very clumsy. Instead of just swapping a name to demonstrate his protagonist is putting on a persona/ready to behave more maturely, I think Mister Shusterman should have just relied on dialogue, body language, and verbal patterns to demonstrate her switches. Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde is an incredible study on this sort of style.)

Rowan dabbles in being Lucifer

Greyson learns Citra's first name? Suddenly they're able to communicate more fully and more intimately.

Goddard is Robert when Rand wants a moment with him, even though Robert is just such a dreadful name for an evil overlord and it just doesn't work. Think about Voldemort. Did Voldemort EVER let Bellatrix call him Tom or Marvolo? Not a chance. The one person who called Voldemort by his first name was his arch-nemesis, and Voldemort tried to kill said arch-nemesis for his irreverence. Goddard literally called himself an angel, I don't see why he allows himself to be addressed so casually without repercussions. It lessens his strength so much.

The moment I learned the high scythes' first names in the second book, I knew they were going to die, because whenever Mister Shusterman lets us know a first name, it's meant to make us have a deep connection with that character.

I mentioned this before with quips, and I'll say it again; if every character has a nickname and/or an alter ego that they flip and flop back and forth with to represent their inner turmoil, well… then it's not a unique trait, it's just a general device that's used over and over. It loses meaning, it loses its punch, and it loses uniqueness.

I don't want to accuse an author I don't know, but I personally believe that simply switching names to get across complex emotional beats is a weaker, quicker way to write. If there were complex emotional beats with body language and good dialogue and then names were conservatively sprinkled in after these important parts, maybe I would be less aggravated by it.

4) Telling things that should be shown or not mentioned at all.

As a general rule, narrators do not exist to make you like characters. The characters themselves are meant to win you over through dialogue, actions, and shows of personality. When the narrator decides not to let the characters show their personality and simply blurts the character's attributes to the reader, this is called telling and not showing.

"Citra was well known for her temper. It often arrived before reason, and left only after damage was done. Tonight would be no exception."

If this scene is going to demonstrate exactly what the narrator is describing, why describe this attribute at all? Simply let the scene play out, showing us Citra's temper, and we will deduce her personality from this.

"Every ship would have its own Cirrus, as wise and benevolent as the Thunderhead."

This is said at the end of the third book. We've spent three books with the Thunderhead. If we don't know what it's personality is by now, we must be illiterate. We don't need to be told attributes we've already been shown.

Part of the reason why Citra and Rowan's relationship feels so flat is because the narrator gives us a speedran summary of their relationship growth; we don't actually get to see anything beyond them yelling and snarking at each other one second and being desperately in love the other. We're told they care about each other. We're told they take actions and have conversations. We. Are. Not. Shown. These moments.

"She was now Citra once more; proud and headstrong, but with no impressive social footprint."

This is said in the second book, at which point we ought to know all this and more about Citra. If Mister Shusterman included this for readers who chose to start reading at the second book instead of the first, this is still a bad choice because he already showed us Citra's proud and headstrong nature in the chapter before the one where this quote came from. Any new readers should already have picked this up on their own. Again, he's stating something that the character herself should have been left to demonstrate.

This feature in the Scythe series leads me to experience aggravation of two kinds:

I feel that I am being given a summary of an event I have already witnessed/a person I have already met, even though the author knows I have witnessed the event/met the person. It's as though the author thinks I suffer from short term memory loss.

I feel that I am being given a summary of a YouTube video in words when the author has a cell phone and could easily take his phone out and show me the video himself, and would paint a better picture by doing so.

5) Goddard is a remarkably awfully written villain

This part is a combination of several different technical problems, and I considered integrating it into the other points I made, but I thought it deserved its own honorable mention.

The main issue I have with the main villain is that Mister Shusterman doesn't seem to know whether he wants Goddard to be a joke or a threat.

There is a paragraph in The Toll saying that Goddard could "twist your thoughts until they were no longer yours, but his. That's what made him so dangerous."

Only a few chapters away from this sentence is another one which says "Goddard spouted erudite gibberish with such regularity, Rand had learned to turn her ears off to it."

The contradiction is incredible. I have no idea who this man ought to be.

(I will also say that if the author has to tell me how a villain is dangerous, he most likely isn't.)

Some examples of strained Goddard dialogue/descriptions are

"He was brilliant in at finding shapes in the clouds of his fury."

"I am your completion! I am the last word of your unsatisfied, unsavory lives… I am your portal to the mysteries of oblivion!"

"He had strewn them there as a way to raise his troubled spirits. Surely their magnificence would bring him not just comfort, but elevation."

"We are angels of death," said Scythe Goddard. "It is only fitting that we swoop in from the heavens."

I haven't got the book with me but there's a line about the meat of his vengeance being relished

"I enjoy spectacles, and there's no reason needed beyond that."

"Embrace it, Rowan. Suckle at its transformative breast… The thrill of the hunt and the joy of the kill simmers in all of us."

"Now Goddard paces, whipping his fury into a caustic meringue."

Goddard clapped his hands together, truly tickled.

"Goddard is as corrosive as acid hurled in the eye."

It’s him!” “He’s so handsome!” “He’s so scary!” “He’s so well-groomed!” Goddard took a moment to turn to the crowd and sweep his hand in a royal wave.

In summary, Goddard comes off as a comic villain, and not a strong one. It sounds like he's almost trying to be Thanos and just falling so so short.

But he has such damaging effects? And it seems to be for no reason whatsoever?

He spews terrible dialogue but has absolute control? He supposedly is powerful, but he is vanquished by his own henchwoman when the heroes don't care enough about him to try and kill him themselves?

Literally Citra is trying to find reasons to stay on earth and she's like "Well I guess no one really needs me here" as Goddard has been spending the past years? mass murdering people? She just forgets about him as a threat?

Also he's named Robert How can I take a villain named Robert seriously, for the love of all that is good

When the main villain is simply cringeworthy, the series suffers as a whole.

BONUS Round! Just some thoughts

To this day I think about how Sydney Possuelo had to go into a vault and find two naked teenagers lying very deadish on the floor in each other's arms and I think about his reaction and you know what it definitely checks out

Honestly Astrid was awesome, she handled her situation like a champ

I still don't get why Greyson broke up with the Thunderhead tho, he genuinely fell in love with Jerico because she said hello in the same way the Thunderhead did lol

To be real, the deaths are always the best part of this series

Now. You may be thinking that I despise the Arc of a Scythe series.

This is untrue.

I stuck with the Scythe series through all of my nitpicks and dislikes because the concept is absolutely incredible and can't be thrown aside. Mister Shusterman did an amazing job of creating an emotional, fast-paced plot with great locations, moral questions, and themes. I just desperately wish that the flaws that I personally noticed could have been left out of such an interesting story so that I could have been drawn even deeper into the world and loved the characters more than I do.

How to hold a Yu-Gi-Oh! event hostage

Important note before we begin: while this does not technically fall under the stated definitions of slow play or stalling, I cannot say with absolute certainty that the head judge will not give you one of these penalties anyway. Generally, don't do this, since it's a dick move to everyone involved. Okay? Okay.

Right now, here's the rules for loops in Yu-Gi-Oh!:

Basically, if a mandatory loop occurs, then either it ends the game (in which case you proceed to the state that it will reach and end the game as described) or it doesn't (in which case, the offending cards are removed from the field). However, there are some problems with this definition: namely, it's not always easy to determine if it will end the game, or if it will, how the game will end.

By exploiting this, we can create scenarios that can take arbitrarily long to play out, and assuming our opponent plays for a win, will have to be played out. However, this means that everyone else will have to wait for your game, thus "holding the event hostage". Details below.

Let's introduce our primary culprits:

The combination of these two forms a particularly heinous loop. If Morphing Jar #2 (hereafter MJ2) is flipped face-up while All-Out Attacks (AOA) is active, if you have no monsters in your deck, it will summon itself, which makes AOA flip it up, which makes it activate again. This will continue endlessly. Without any other monsters, this is a mandatory loop that won't end the game, so a judge is called over and sends one of the cards (probably the AOA) to the graveyard. However, the advantage of this is that we can trigger monsters' flip effects, and they will also activate each iteration.

Enter the murder weapon:

If we also have Dice Jar on our side of the field, we can have it repeatedly activate. This will push players' life totals downward, so this will end the game, no matter what the starting life totals are.

While some of these scenarios are a bit far-fetched, just remember that there are plenty of combos that allow you to force pretty much any board state you want. Execute one of those and politely ask your opponent to not concede.

SCENARIO 1 (simple and clean):

Through some prior combo, you have given your opponent 1 million life and yourself 2 million life. You then get this combo on the board and activate MJ2. This will repeatedly resolve Dice Jar. Your opponent will take an average of 600 rolls to die, while you take 1200, so odds are very good that your opponent will die first.

Problem:

This scenario does work within the rules as described. The scenario will have to play out and you will have to resolve Dice Jar several hundred times. However, in order to comfortably be in a winning position, you need to give yourself a large initial cushion, or else it can rapidly dwindle if you're unlucky. And putting yourself as far ahead as described above will make your opponent likely to just concede, rather than play it out.

However, we can make our opponent less likely to concede if we play with fire. Say hello to the healer:

Yes, I realize that this is really obtuse. Sadly, Galaxy Mirror Sage (GMS) is the only card that can gain us enough life on a flip effect.

SCENARIO 2 (Mutual Cooperation, possible termination):

It's the same scenario as before, but in addition to the previously mentioned cards, both players have a GMS that they own and each has 4 Galaxy monsters in their GY. Also, the starting life totals are lower, around 20000 apiece. MJ2 is activated.

Problem:

While it is worded poorly, the rule for infinite loops requires that the game ends with 100% certainty in order for judge intervention to not be required. While this can end by either player getting unlucky, it is very likely to not do so, since each player will gain life on average. (The average Dice Jar activation does between 1500 and 2000 damage.) Since this isn't guaranteed to end the game, a judge will remove one of the cards, probably the AOA.

Also, this requires you to be playing against a friend who is also playing this, making it less viable than scenario 1.

SCENARIO 3 (Calculus is your friend!):

Your opponent is at 1 trillion LP, while you are at 10000 LP. You control GMS, MJ2, Dice Jar, and AOA. You have 4 Galaxy monsters in your graveyard. You flip MJ2 down and up again.

As a result, you are net gaining life on average, but can always get unlucky a few times and lose. Your opponent's life never goes up. Eventually, this will end the game.

Problem:

Sadly, "eventually" isn't good enough here. While the game will end with 100% probability, there is theoretically the possibility that you lose all but finitely many Dice Jar flips (and somehow don't die to its activations before your opponent does). YGO's rules don't take limits into account, so a judge could make the argument that this loop won't necessarily end the game, preventing you from holding up the event for an hour.

SCENARIO 4 (Perfect, if complex):

Same setup as scenario 3, but we also have a Poison Mummy on the field.

Now, we give our opponent a sliver of hope that we'll get unlucky and lose, but really, we're quite likely to survive. Since Poison Mummy inflicts damage to our opponent, the game will definitely end within 2 billion iterations of the loop, no matter how bad the dice get.

This means that the only way to see the winner is to play it out... but that could take a while. As long as you want it to, really. (Or until your opponent sees the writing on the wall and gives up.)

And in the meantime, the entire tournament is being held hostage.

Part #1: Prologue

Let’s start from the beginning. Boeing is one of the largest airplane manufacturers in the world. They are the largest airplane manufacturer in the US. 

In the 1990s and 2000s, there was demand from the airlines to Boeing to make a more fuel-efficient twin-jet aircraft that can compete with the offerings from Airbus (the other major airplane manufacturer in the world). Since it would be too expensive to develop a brand new airplane, Boeing instead took their popular 737 NG narrow-body twin-jet and made modifications to it including, but not limited to, new engines which were larger but used less fuel than the older models. It was the change in engines that brought about the issues we will explore.  

These larger engines had to be mounted further up on the wings, and further forward on the aircraft in order to maintain a good weight distribution front to rear. However, there was a concern to engineers at Boeing that the engines could cause the plane to be unstable in the air. They developed a powerful system called the “Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System” (MCAS).  

In the United States and around the world, new aircraft must be certified by regulators and governing bodies that they are safe to operate. This is an expensive process to undergo, as well as time-consuming. And that’s just to certify the plane for flight, that’s not taking into account the cost of developing the craft in the first place. The other cost that must be taken into account with a new aircraft is training the pilots to fly the plane itself. This is not generally a cost the manufacturer takes on, but the airline the pilot works for. This can make new planes unattractive for airlines to buy because of the cost and time to train their pilots on the new planes. Ultimately, they may choose to forego the purchase of a new aircraft and instead purchase a model that their pilots have already been trained on. Because Boeing chose to adapt an existing plane with new features, they were able to avoid many of these costs. And because it was the popular 737 adapted, there was no shortage of pilots who — in theory — were trained to fly them. But the MCAS system gets in the way of that. This system was much more powerful and substantial than Boeing published. Boeing’s own tests showed pilots must be trained in order to properly fly the plane.

MCAS was designed to prevent the aircraft from stalling. Stalling in aircraft is not like a car, the engines are not the issue, it is the lift and the airflow around the wings is not sufficient to keep the aircraft in the air and it will fall out of the sky. The MCAS system uses data from a singular Angle of Attack (AoA) sensor to determine if the angle is too high, and can adjust the flaps to gently nose down the aircraft to keep it flying. MCAS runs for 10 seconds, and pushes the aircraft powerfully nose-down during that time. Once MCAS ran, it would take another reading from the AoA sensor and run again if needed. In the time it’s reassessing, it would be off for 5 seconds. This process would continue until the plane was at an acceptable angle. One issue with this system was that it only took measurements from one AoA sensor — and not two. There was no redundancy in this system so if the AoA sensor was malfunctioning or had an inaccurate reading, there was no system in place that would be able to give alternate data to MCAS. 

Boeing knew about this limitation, and they also knew that in the event of MCAS malfunctioning, a pilot has only a ten-second window to regain control of the plane. Beyond that timeframe, the aircraft may be traveling at an excessive speed and angle of descent, rendering it unrecoverable. Boeing’s own documents state “With pilot training to recognize the runaway, a reaction time scenario of greater than 10 seconds found the failure to be catastrophic”. Boeing did not disclose this timeframe, nor trained the pilots on MCAS although they knew they had to be trained. This is exactly the situation that lead to the crash of Ethiopian Airlines ET302 and Lion Air JT610. By the time the pilot and captain of ET302 turned off MCAS, the plane was traveling too fast, and they could not pull up because of the extreme force on the tail wing. The pilots of ET302 had been briefed on the system by Boeing, the pilots of JT610 had not. 

Boeing opted not to publicize their new system and avoided making a big fuss about it, likely due to concerns over regulatory scrutiny from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). By keeping a low profile, they were able to avoid drawing attention to themselves and potential regulatory implications. Had the FAA gotten involved, they would have required pilots to undergo training and be certified to fly the 737 Max aircraft — a separate certification to the standard 737 NG. As explained earlier, this training is expensive for the airlines who buy and fly the planes. They have to put their pilots on the sidelines while being trained, and have other pilots flying commercially. This is unattractive for airlines, who may choose to purchase a different aircraft which does not require retraining — an aircraft not made by Boeing, principally, Airbus.

Airbus is Boeing’s primary — and in many cases only — competitor. These two manufacturers have an effective duopoly on the marketplace. In the lead up to the 737 Max release, Boeing had been losing market share to Airbus for years. And it did not help that Airbus had just released a version of their popular A320 called the A320neo, which was more efficient than the previous version. The A320 had become the best selling aircraft in its class, and the A320neo extended that lead — the lead ahead of the Boeing 737. At the time the 737 Max was release, it became the fastest selling aircraft Boeing had ever released. It included some of the largest orders both by volume and monetary value that Boeing had ever seen. This was great for Boeing’s profit, and share price. 

It was not until the plane was grounded by governments around the world that Boeing was forced to fix the 737 Max. They made adjustments to the MCAS system, listed below: 

MCAS now takes input from both of the AoA sensors, instead of just one. And if they do not have the same reading, MCAS will not activate and will instead display a warning to the pilots. MCAS can now only run 1 time, it will not get caught in the repeated “run for 10, off for 5, run for 10, off for 5” cycle that brought down JT610 and ET302. The power of MCAS has been reduced, it can no longer adjust the flaps to a degree which the pilots themselves cannot also match or exceed. 

Boeing designed an aircraft with a fatal flaw — one that after the first crash, an FAA investigation projected the 737 Max would wind up being the most deadly modern aircraft. Up to 1 fatal crash every 2 years for the lifetime of the plane, and up to 15 more (after the Lion Air crash) over the life of the Max. This report was not made public at the time of its publication. Boeing chose to put sales and profits ahead of designing a safe aircraft — and designing training that would make pilots aware of the new systems onboard the aircraft. They did not do what would ensure the safety of the hundreds and thousands of passengers who would fly on this plane, and instead concealed the dangers of the aircraft to airlines and regulators alike. As a result, 346 people died in the 2 737 Max crashes.

This is still me on my Morph kick, but I would be very interested to see the original 616 Changeling return on Krakoa, just to see how the writers would handle him.  (I’m using “him” here for the comics character, because as far as I know he identifies as male in the comics.  Although Exiles Morph was basically born as a vaguely humanoid white-glob, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he was non-binary as well.) 

Original Changeling was very different from the Morph character, he was much more of a classic villain, generally cold and callous.  He worked for the Mutant Master as part of Factor Three and was seeking to bring about WWIII, with the idea that mutants would dominate the earth after humanity wiped itself out.  He then turned on Mutant Master when he began to suspect his motives. Mutant Master was revealed to be an alien who wanted to wipe out both humans and mutants, at which point both Factor Three and the X-Men teamed up to defeat him.  A few weeks later, Changeling shows up at the X-Mansion, telling Xavier he has terminal cancer and wants to spend his last months making up for his misdeeds.  Xavier has to go away for awhile, and asks Changeling to take his place (seriously, Charles, you’re gonna put your students in the hands of the only recently reformed villain?  But it’s okay, Xavier can tell Changeling is sincere with his telepathic powers, so that’s totally fine.)  Changeling then sacrifices himself in battle to defeat another enemy, and dies as “Xavier.” 

So, this is obviously a more serious character, who seems like an experienced criminal, initially quite ruthless.  Which is very different from the more light-hearted animated series Morph, and the heroic AoA and Exiles Morph.  I really want to know how that personality shift happened.  I know the real reason.  They re-wrote Changeling as Morph for TAS, and made them nicer and more comic-relief so their death would be sympathetic.  That version of the character was then transplanted back into the comics as AoA and Exiles Morph.  But I mean....in-continuity, I want to know how original Changeling wound up so different from his alternate counter-parts.  AoA Morph apparently started out as the villainous Changeling, felt remorse for his actions, and developed the more wacky personality to cope with the horrible world he was living in.  Exiles Morph was never a villain, and I can’t imagine animated Morph starting out as part of Factor Three.  So what the hell happened with 616 Changeling? 

Given that there are various AU’s in which a normally heroic character is evil, or at least misguided, it would be kind of funny if 616 Changeling is actually the “evil” mirror-universe version of the character, and every other Changeling/Morph in the multiverse is generally a good guy person.

Anyway, I would be fascinated to see how a resurrected Changeling would be written on Krakoa.  Would he be a reformed criminal, and still a more serious version of the character?  Would he adopt the silly personality of the other Morphs, because “Fuck it, no one remembers how I used to be anyway, and I’m gonna reinvent myself.”  Would he declare himself retired like Five in Season 3 of Umbrella Academy, and just hang out on the beach in old man clothes?  If they really wanted a “new” Changeling, I can also imagine a scenario in which 616 Changeling, hanging out in the Waiting Room, decides he is at peace and doesn’t want to come back, and sends an alternate version of himself through to resurrection instead.

in light of the new year I've decided to talk all by favourite releases/groups that either came out this year ( I've also included songs i discovered  this year), i won’t be  including  any releases I've already reviewed. in no particular order.

catch & release-H1 KEY: i found this song like a couple months ago and i love it so much, the only way i can describe is if ITZY released flip a coin by BILLIE, it’s so good.

shakalaka - dal shabat: this song is sooo good i love the instrumental it  sounds glittery. i wish there were performance videos because i really wanna see the choreography.

forever 1 - SNSD: this song is so amazing, i already have a soft spot for group reunions but this song slaps, i feel like if you enjoyed queendom by red velvet or scientist and TTT by twice this song is right up your alley. also whoever was responsible for the final chorus deserves a raise for  the pure amount of emotion in her voice.

designer nct 127: i love this song so much it’s so nice, i love R&B so much anyway but SM’s producers  really understand the genre.

copycat - APINK CHOBOM: the vibes this song have are immaculate, there's something so nostalgic about it.

AOA: I've listened to AOA casually  but i recently decided to check out their Bsides and they have so many good ones, my recommendations are: cherry pop, super duper, 10 seconds and short hair(which isn’t a b side but still bangs)

F(X): similar to aoa I've always enjoyed their music but i’ve never really dived into their discography besides title tracks my recommendations are: love, chu ♡ , mr boogie, when  i’m alone and every bside off the pink tape album.

 chesire - itzy: this song slapped so hard in fact the entire album was fire.

baby i miss you - 2NE1:this song is so pretty, for some reason it reminds me of new jeans like if this song was released now it would go to new jeans.

tell me- wonder girls: she bangs idk what to tell you, i’ve started  listening  to this song every time i do my makeup and honestly  it’s changed my world view.

Hi, welcome back! I love your latest story, it’s so hot to see these two beauties in one story! Honestly I didn’t realize I have seen your work in aff until I checked your master list lol I notice that AOA is in your list, and I haven’t seen a decent AOA smut in quite some time, so I wonder are you interested in writing sth with Seolhyun and Hyejeong together? I haven’t got a solid idea yet, but I guess it would be interesting to see one of them is having intimate relationship with you and the other becomes jealous. They could be friends, or roommates, or total strangers, and the story could go total different ways based on different scenarios.

I do plans on writing Seolhyun, I have had a draft sitting in my doc that I reeeeeeeeeally want to finish and release, just waiting for the right inspiration and motivation to hit

((I adore getting to think and talk about what kind of Showtime Makoto could have with the other Thieves, like say Joker. But one I really REALLY want to see and/or plan out is a Showtime with Makoto and Akechi. 

You take a look at their AoA screens and see the three of them (this does include his Black Mask AoA screen) all pertain to finding justice. Or some sense of real truth. It matches with their overall character arcs and focus in the game. Their trying to find what their own justice is, what’s truly right and wrong, so on and so forth. 

Now put that into a Showtime scenario! Combine those aspects with how BRUTAL both of them are as fighters and it can be one REALLY DAMN COOL Showtime!))

I just had this nice dream about sehun. It was more like watching a drama play out in front of me, but it was created by my subconscious nonetheless!

But basically since we all know how much Sehun loves being around kids, with all his volunteer work and such, that he basically meets this girl (who looked a lot like Seolhyun of AOA btw (not shipping tho!)), who’s also volunteering there. And by watching her with the kids, he becomes smitten with her. And the same goes for her. So much so, that the kids at the orphanage start shipping them and try out crazy plans to get them other. There is even a scenario where they take one of the kids out with them to get some groceries and the cashier mistakes them as a family! “Like how aren’t you such a beautiful family! You two must’ve gotten married right college!” And the little shit they brought with them agrees! “Yes, aren’t parents the best!” causing both of them to blush like hell. Overall, it was the perfect blend of romance, comedy, with a touch of angst.

*sigh* I wish I was talented enough to write and fill it out more.

i'm sooo desperately in love with loki, both as a him x me and also as a him x anyone, because i just want him to be happy or suffering (everyone needs to suffer sometimes). what's so awfully sad about this is i am a quiet hater of self-insert fics (not to yuck anyone's yum, but it's not for me!) which means i can only read and write about him with someone else, and fuck man, the options sure are limited

i like loki x mobius because it's, well, it's loki & mobius. but to write a fic with them that is in their universe means i have to wrestle with all that TVA shit, and ugh man i don't have time for that

i love loki in the comics the most, the modern version (think JiM -> agent of asgard), but the problem is that the only viable ships for him are either as a child with leah, or as an adult with verity, and neither feel very right to me; i'm not fond of writing romance involving children, and i'm of the firm belief that loki and verity's friendship should remain as it is

i wonder if anyone gets what i'm hinting at, because it's embarrassing to write out, and it's even more embarrassing to have initially thought of it as a joke and realize, no, i really do feel this ship deep in my core. i felt this way with osomatsu-san too, for obvious reasons, but back then i was able to brush it off because i had more self control. but now i think of loki and thor and can't help but think of a million self-indulgent scenarios in which they do all sorts of non-brotherly things... and to have to tag things on ao3 with "sibling incest" is like holy shit, i really have fallen into some dark alternate path i should never have even stepped towards

but it's also a funny concept because i have LONG been a real hater of anything that breaches my own idea of taboo - but this has kind of opened my eyes about how silly it is. like no, i would obviously never support siblings dating irl, and my act of writing these fics does not push me even a miniscule closer to approving of such a thing. but thor & loki are fiction, and their relationship is fictional, and the fucked up things they have gone through are fictional, and that has to count for something, right?

i think what i'm getting from all of this is FUCK YOU loki writers, for not giving him a good and easy love interest for me to write about (not that i can even envision what that type of person would be), because you have SINGLE-HANDEDLY forced me to delve to the deepest parts of my imagination to wrench out any potential partner in hopes i can imagine them kissing loki. this is your fault, al ewing!!! (just kidding, i love you. and thank you for AoA)
