Agents of SHIELD Rewatch Season 1B (ep. 12-22)
Here's my commentary on my rewatch of Agents of SHIELD Season 1 Episodes 12-22. This may not be the best commentary since these are just the thoughts and opinions that come to my mind as I watch the episodes rather than a full-blown analysis, but I'm just having fun with it!
1x12 Seeds
I don't know about you guys, but I've always wanted to go to the SHIELD Academy since I first watched this episode. Personally, I think I'd be in communications just cause I'm not good at anything physical or science. Plus, it sounds kinda fun. And it's the easiest to get into so that's probably the only one I qualify for haha😅
I like how Weaver just completely skips over Skye in introducing herself.
The Wall of Valor scene is so funny to watch now after Season 7 because Daniel Sousa's name is on that wall and like 5-6 years later, he's Skye's husband boyfriend.
The fact that May knew what was going on the whole time with Coulson while she was trying to draw his attention away from it.
I love how May talking at all means that some things is up.
Also, this is probably the start of May really caring for Skye. Even though she was doing it to take Coulson's mind someplace else, she cared enough about Skye to do this for her.
For someone who's been off-grid for 23 years, Lumley's still got it.
Also, the fact that he knew exactly what they were there for. He saw them and knew immediately that it was about Daisy.
Hearing the story feels so different after season 2 since we know that Whitehall had originally raided the village followed by Cal and Jiaying killing everyone in search of Daisy.
I get that the protocol was created to protect Skye, but it's honestly sad that none of them thought of the emotional ramifications it would have on Skye. Even though she learns that's what happened, that doesn't change the abuse and feelings of loneliness she grew up with. Again, THE SHOW SHOULD HAVE EXPLORED HER PAST MORE.
Also sad that the scene with Agent Tad (played by Zachary Burr Abel aka Elizabeth's fiance) was cut.
I honestly kinda feel bad for Donnie. Seth used him for money then he was later brainwashed by Hydra and unfortunately, had to be killed.
Skye thought she did something wrong when Coulson wouldn't look at her (Again, not to be protective about Skye, but damn somebody give her a hug.)
"I can get there." "Yeah, I can't get there"
COULSON HOLDING SKYE'S HAND AS THEY ENTER THE STORM BEING SUCH A DADDDD!!
"Who do you become?" UGH THE FORESHADOWING TO 2x10 OMG.
1x13 T.R.A.C.K.S.
TIME FOR THE BEST EPISODE OF THE SEASON AND ONE OF THE BEST EPISODES OF THE WHOLE SERIES
May looks so good in this episode.
I also love Skye's outfit, but too bad it had to get ruined when she got SHOT.
"Wait, you told him?" "YEP" Oh, May I love you.
Does anyone else get kinda uncomfortable when Fitz speaks with an American accent? Like it's so unnatural to me. (Iain does an amazing accent. It's just weird to me that the accent is coming out of his mouth)
"PrOsTiTuTeS!"
"Prostitutes? Plural?"
I love the Jemma and Coulson duo. So happy it came back in 7x03 with almost the same energy.
WHY DID YOU HAVE TO HESITATE TO PUNCH HER WARD!? AND DON'T ACT LIKE YOU'VE GOT MORALS. YOU'RE FUCKING HYDRA.
"My men are dead" Cause May got the best of you idiot.
The ICONIC holo table scene. We love to see it.
I love how in a matter of seconds, we see just how much of a badass May is while also showing how big of a heart she has towards the people she cares about.
I. LOVE. MELINDA. MAY.❤️❤️
We really got some Philinda action in this episode.
Fitz's comment to Skye is basically the right idea, but executed horribly (he said it to ease her nerves but it only made her more scared of herself) which you can't blame him for since he doesn't know what exactly she's referring to just yet.
On my first watch, I KNEW something bad was going to happen when Skye said she wanted to go in alone.
But props to Skye cause before she's cornered in that basement, she actually handles herself really well.
Here's the second Skye/Daisy choke out of the series, and what do you know, it's in front of Quinn AGAIN.
As soon as Quinn raised the gun in Mike's hand, I knew Skye was going to get hurt when I first watched it.
Oh god, Skye crying out for help always gets me.
Coulson goes into Protective Dad Mode™ as soon as he sees the blood on Quinn's hand, and he already knows it's Skye's blood.
Coulson holding Skye on the ground and just repeating "hang on" gets me every time too.
I love how much the team has grown to care about Skye over the past 13 episodes. Even though they haven't known each other long, her being on the verge of death affects all of them, and none of them can imagine their lives without her.
Leave me alone to cry😭
1x14 T.A.H.I.T.I.
The whole beginning of this episode feels so intense and heartbreaking.
I love how May's the one to bring everyone back in and say that none of them were at fault.
WHEN THE DOCTOR COMES OUT AND YOU CAN SEE IT IN HER FACE THAT IT'S NOT GOOD AHHH.
"We're her family" YES YOU FUCKING ARE I'M GONNA GO CRY IN THE CORNER NOW😭
AND THE FULL MAMA BEAR MAY FINALLY MAKES HER APPEARANCE!
I will never not be sick of watching May beat the crap out of Ian Quinn. It's literally one of my favorite scenes ever.
We love Bill Paxton here.
Also, TRIP!! I LOVE AND MISS YOU TRIP.
I was low-key (but very much high-key now) rooting for Trip to win the little fight between him and Ward...
The whole giant file thing (echo chamber I think they call it) still makes no sense to me. Like how do you tell what is what and where you are in the files?
Honesly, if they went the Trip and Simmons route, I wouldn't have even been mad (even though I personally did ship him and Skye for a bit in s2.)
Ugh the whole Skye almost flatlining to the bunker collapsing to injecting Skye with the GH-325 is intense.
We love Protective Dad™ Coulson.
1x15 Yes Men
She's getting better😆
You did amazing Skye. Don't think so low of yourself.
Skye's got 'Welcome Wagon' catching on😉
LADY SIF!!!!!!
I love May's face when Sif explains how Lorelei's powers only work on men cause they have a weakness that women don't have.
I love that Sif already knows how to use the holo table. Coulson must be feeling do bad right now haha🤣
And the Night-Night Gun becomes the ICER.
When I first watched this, I didn't understand Coulson's reasoning, but now I am totally on his side. They didn't know what the drug was (well, he did but you know), but it was so protected that it must've been off SHIELD books for a reason.
Mulan moment with May and Sif's sword.
"He will not hesitate to kill you" I mean, in 1x19 he was pretty ready to kill her and he wasn't mind controlled then.
Yep. May's ready to murder Lorelei.
What's with Simmons and that fire extuingisher? It’s the second time this season.
May beating up Ward in this episode is very satisfying.
I don't know about y'all but I'm almost positive Ward pressed the trigger on the gun AFTER Sif put the necklace on Lorelei.
"I'm not saying you were weak. I'm saying ALL men are weak."
THE MAY REVEAL!!!!!
1x16 End of the Beginning
The start of the Winter Soldier tie in!
SKYE’S A SHIELD AGENT NOWWWWW
Ward looks like he’s not happy that she’s an agent now.
“I’m no clairvoyant” he says as he’s following the ‘clairvoyant’
THE LUMERIAN STARRRRR
Don’t wish Sitwell luck, Coulson. He’s Hydra and Bucky’s about to yank him out of a moving car and yeet him across the freeway.
How did Fitz and Simmons not think May was being suspicious. She’s good at hiding it things, but in that moment, she was acting so different and her tone was different as well.
“Are you scorpio?” Yes actually. Ming-Na Wen is indeed a scorpio.
“Don’t call me Vic. It’s condescending.”
I just now realized Garrett checking out Fitz’s golden retrievers. That probably when he decided he wanted to come to Hydra.
Garrett was probably down there making sure Thomas Bash was set up.
Coulson gonna protect his new daughter from harm.
Ward don’t act all heroic. You knew that guy wasn’t the clairvoyant. God I’m so happy the betrayal episode is next.
“DoN’t UsE mY nAmE jEmMa”
HE’S AN AGENT OF SHIELD
If I was Fitz and I was peeking into May’s line and she caught me, I’d shit my pants.
“I didn’t do anything”🙅‍♂️
Okay, but what was the point of the ICER? Like why was she gonna ice him?
I kinda believe that if Skye hadn’t came in when she did, Coulson may have actually figured Ward out.
And there’s the Victoria Hand fake out.
1x17 Turn, Turn, Turn
Okay but Garret just flying the plane and reading a book is a whole mood.
I was so scared that Trip was Hydra when I first watched this episode.
DID COULSON REALLY HAVE TO SHOOT MAY WITH THE REAL GUN!?
“Booyah!”💥
H Y D R A
Garrett, Coulson’s a whole lot smarter than you thought.
*cue Among Us music*
YOU’RE ONE TO TALK WARD JUST SHUT UP ALREADY
I completely understand Coulson’s anger, but May was completely under orders and I feel like he would’ve done the same thing if he had been ordered to.
I completely missed the part where 2 different teams stormed the Bus, so that means both a shield and a hydra team were coming for them.
“You haven’t even taught me to hold up under torture yet” “We’ll get to that. It’s fun”
YES TRIP!
Hand is kinda twisting the events of what actually happened.
How did those agents that were running towards the closet not see the door open? Like it’s not hard to miss.
SHUT YOUR MOUTH WARD
I did ship SkyeWard when I watched s1 for the first time. Now, I’m just counting down the days until Skye/Daisy’s lips will be touching Daniel’s instead of this murderer’s.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE GARRETT SLIP-UP SCENE!!
IAIN BRINGING TEARS TO THIS SCENE
MAY DOING THE BLACK WIDOW MOVE!!
So Victoria Hand and that strike team just waited until the fight was done to enter?
“How deep does it go?” YOU HAVE A MOLE ON YOUR TEAM COULSON
I do wish I didn’t get spoiled that Ward was Hydra the first time I watched it. That reaction would’ve been amazing.
1x18 Providence
It's been a few weeks since I last watched haha😅
RAINA'S BACK. I frickin love Raina.
And suddenly Ward is all evil and shit. It's been what? 12 hours at most?
"You're not clairvoyant?" Well, Raina, guess who is going to be in a season.
Was I the only one who was annoyed by Fitz kinda getting on Jemma and Trip? He claims they're ganging up on him, but they're right. Plus, he's the one who told Trip to turn it on only to scream at him and get mad. I'm probably reading too much into this cause my likings of Fitz have gone down significantly since I first watched, but I digress.
YAY TRIP IS ON THE TEAM NOW
I don't really like the side plot of Fitz being jealous of Trip and acting like he's the bad guy.
"We have internet" "Yayyy"
Just drop him already, Skye. He's not worth it.
No surprise to anyone but Grant Ward is an asshole.
I get he still likes her, but if he knew someone on the team was going to get hurt eventually, why the hell is Ward so mad about it? I guess I just hate that he still cares about her because it's so DISGUSTING!!🤮
Jesus Juice™
Poor Skye. She was only SHIELD for a day.
To be honest, I understand the team's reserves about the situation.
SHUT UP WARD
You're no one's type, Ward.
Him repeating what he said at the beginning of the season is so awkward idk why😂
SCREW GARRETT AND SCREW WARD
She is concerned, Phil. I hate this whole Coulson and May conflict.
ngl May could definitely take Coulson on if she were to take his 'weapon'
These agents are so stupid. No Hand, no opening the door. Seriously? It's not that hard. If they were told to only open the doors with Hand, then that's what they have to do ESPECIALLY right now.
Skye has the cutest snow outfit with her little purple beanie💜
See, this part I can admit that I understand where Fitz is coming from. I, too, struggle so much with change. My mind is constantly thinking about ways things would be if certain things didn't change, and my mind kind of just feeds off of that.
Coulson's "agents of nothing" speech still hits hard.
Again, SKYE IS SO SMART AND CLEVER!
KOENIG!!!!!!!!
We love the lanyards.
Funny how when he mentions 'brother' none of us knew he had 3 more brothers that look exactly like him (and a sister).
"Pull the plane in" SO THEY HAVE TO WALK ALL THE WAY BACK?!
"At least the machine gun didn't start shooting at you." I WISH IT DID.
I too regret that Garrett didn't rip Quinn's tongue out.
And that's the last time we will ever see gravitonium until season 5!
1x19 Only Light in the Darkness
We finally get the story of the cellist.
Okay, but what happened to all the other criminals locked up in the Fridge? Are they still on the run?
Why does almost every bad guy have to listen to classical music?
Skye sounded so scared when she said Ian Quinn🥺
Was Koenig not informed Coulson had a whole team? He seems so mad that there are other people besides Coulson.
During this whole scene we learn that May was once married, Trip is the grandson of a Howling Commando, and Skye's name from the orphanage was Mary Sue Poots.
I’ve never watched anything Doctor Who related and know very little about it, but Jemma being a Doctor Who fangirl is adorable.
Why is this the only time Ward's sister is mentioned? Like, was she just never around?
Koenig should've shot Ward right then and there. If there were spikes, that's a major red flag. I'm sure the team would understand if he had said, "he was lying. He's Hydra."
Again, Fitz hating on Trip is pretty annoying.
And that's why you don't go jogging at night.
We love Skye hacking into government agencies.
And Simmons is still a terrible liar.
"It was like he came out of a movie." Haha.... ha
They were planning a trip to Tahiti🥺😩
"I wake up like he's watching over me." Haha... ha… HA
What made Ward think he could take out Melinda May?
Bye, Eric. It was nice knowing you.
I feel like Skye was truly sad when May left. Probably felt abandoned like when she was in foster care and masked it by being angry/annoyed.
AHH, THIS SCENE! The cello in the background with Skye finding out Ward is Hydra is phenomenal!
Chloe does such an amazing performance in this scene!
UGh Ward's obsession with Skye is WEIRD and CREEPY and I DON'T LIKE IT!
DON'T TOUCH HER LIKE THAT WARD!!
Lian May has canonically met Maria Hill, and I love that.
1x20 Nothing Personal
MARIA HILLLLL
I love that Coulson finally came around on the May situation.
And that's when Coulson goes into Full Dad Mode™.
Skye is really doing such a better job at staying undercover and staying relaxed than Ward.
Hello General Talbot. Can't wait for the love/hate relationship we're gonna have for the next four seasons.
We love Melinda May going grave robbing.
WE LOVE SKYE
Skye would have actually succeeded if Mike didn't come into play. She did so well.
Skye beating Ward for the small moment is my favorite thing in the whole episode.
Ward sympathizers always ignore this scene. WARD IS A BIG FAT FRICKIN NAZI.
"Sacrifices" BOY you haven't sacrificed anything for yourself. You sacrifice other people and things that are special to those people. Don't act like you've given up so much.
No one talks about the mental manipulation Skye went through in this episode, and we really need to.
YES COULSON GO GET YOUR DAUGHTER
I'd only want to go sky diving if it was done in Lola
Coulson giving Skye a candy bar from the vending machine always makes me soft.
"hUH"
1x21 Ragtag
The flashback parts of this episode enrages me for some reason. Like, are you trying to make me sympathize with a nazi? Cause it's not working.
You all will be in Bogota in about two years to pick up someone very special😉
I love fanboy Coulson.
May and Coulson pretending to be Fitzsimmons is one of my favorite things.
"May looks barely a day over... THIRTY! YOU'RE GORGEOUS!"
Sleepy Sleep Gun™
You never want to be stuck in an elevator with Melinda May. Or you absolutely do. Depends on the situation.
"DoEs YoUr SwEaTeR iTcH?"
Season 1 is a fun one to rewatch after having had watched the whole series because they set so much stuff up for season 2 in this season.
"Skye, Trip, get ready for a large file transfer." "How large?" Y E E T
^ Still one of my favorite scenes ever.
Again, this episode is not getting me to feel bad for Ward.
I hate how Fitz just ignores Skye's experience with Ward. He wants to prove that Ward isn't evil when Skye experienced firsthand what kind of person Ward is. It’s like her experience doesn’t matter to him. It literally takes until Ward has affected him personally does he see it.
Again, no one talks about the mental manipulation done to Skye in the last episode.
AND HERE WE HAVE THE TRUE BEGINNINGS OF MAMA MAY AND DAISY!
"We'Re GoInG tO cUbA😃"
"Garrett's dying!" GOOD
I do understand that Garrett manipulated Ward, but STILL. I feel like Ward could've redeemed himself before the finale but everything he's done after the turn is absolutely terrible (not excusing every terrible thing he did as hydra before the show btw). Once he reached the point of no return, it's honestly hard to even sympathize with him. Ward deserves nothing.
ANOTHER THING! People say Ward gave Fitzsimmons the best possible option for survival. HOW DOES THAT NEGATE THE FACT THAT HE THREW THEM OUT OF THE PLANE AND INTO THE OCEAN. And don't even get me started on people saying "it was supposed to float." Yeah, the containment pod can, which wasn't invented until SEASON 3!!! I'm pretty sure what they're in is the medical pod that Skye was in after she was shot. I'm almost positive that it doesn't have a floating feature (unless I missed a line completely, but I don’t think I did. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong).
1x22 Beginning of the End
OMG, IT'S NORM FROM WANDAVISION!!!!
That guy's first mistake was approaching May and immediately calling her the Cavalry.
Okay, but did Garrett immediately start writing, but Coulson needed to see the writing first?
^Nevermind. I answered my own question. Tahiti. The false memories. That's it.
Fitz breaking his arm in the same exact places he did when he was a kid reminds me of how my younger brother has been stung by a bee twice on the same pinky finger.
What's with this season and using the "Bob's your uncle" line?
"What will I become?" AHHHHHHHH
Hey! Jemma! I was miserable and upside down before I was born too!!
Oh, Trip I miss you.
"GoOd BoY"
And also I love Skye. I don't know if I've mentioned it.
"i LoVe YoU tOo"
I don't mind Fitz telling Jemma about his feelings. (Yes, I have issues with the situation he told her in, but in a generalized sense, I don't mind) What I do mind is how he acted after the fact in season 2 just because Simmons didn't reciprocate the feelings. She obviously still loves him, he’s her best friend.
FURYYYYYYYYYYY
YESSSS MAYYY! I FUCKING LOVE YOU SO MUCH! IVE BEEN WANTING TO DO THAT TO WARD ALL SEASON!!!!!
"Hi John" *punch* "Hi Phil" *punch*
"I KNOW WHAT IT DOES"
"You were never on top" I LOVE THAT LINEEEE
"What are we?" WE'RE A TEAM😭
Coulson's an Avenger!!!! Fury said so!
HELLO BILLY KOENIG
And there's Cal!
Ugh I forgot how good this finale is.

Rewatching Seeds
Tumblr media
Melinda “our mission isn’t finding your parents” May goes on a mission to find out about the parents😁.
She's actually been on this mission since The Hub, when she agreed to help Coulson treading those “dangerous waters” - yeah, you guys have NO idea – and despite her open displeasure in The Bridge, here she delivers. It’s a rare opportunity to see May the investigator in action: the Lumley angle is entirely her idea and she manages to track him down after he’d been in hiding for a couple of decades. Not too shabby. As for Lumley, he’s as dramatic as they come. Wherever she goes, death follows? Sheesh!
Tumblr media
While Philinda are having their working vacation in Mexico City, showing off their l337 stakeout skills in the totally inconspicuous BRIGHT RED VINTAGE CAR, their younger teammates are left to their own devices and boy it’s like that episode of every family sit-com ever: the “parents” are away, the “kids” are on their own and the responsible “older sibling” is left in charge. There's even a party, with alcohol! Kudos to the sci-tech cadets for the coolest boiler room in history, btw.
At this point, back in the day, I had finally started warming up to Ward, the one character I hadn't loved straight away in the pilot. He played along when they teased him, had come around on the science twins and had defended and trusted Skye in the previous episode. The guy was okay. And with so many quirky characters, including the leader, the team needed a straight-shooter. Right?
Yeah. Mistakes were made. *cough*
Speaking of mistakes, Donnie Gill makes here the one that ruins his life. A good kid, says Fitz, and it’s plain how he sees himself in the young cadet, who’s off the charts smart but has a hard time relating to people because of it. And instead of finally meeting a kindred spirit at the Academy, like Fitz did with Jemma, he's befriended by Seth, someone who is very confused about what he wants in his life. I mean, I have no idea how much S.H.I.E.L.D. pays its scientists but odds are, if he wanted to be rich, he chose the wrong career path.
The Clairvoyant told me to say hello. I can just imagine Garrett laughing himself silly that he conned Quinn, of all people. He really didn’t seem the type. But considering what happened here and what’s coming next, I don’t even have a tiny violin to play for him. Douchebag.
Stuff that crossed my mind:
Those portable Ice Age devices might have come in handy against the shrikes. Simmons designed the crystalline nucleation process and Fitz invented the delivery mechanism. For the record.
Aww, they’re all having breakfast together.
Academy of communications [...] the biggest and focused on data analysis. -- It's the easiest to get into. -- That's where you'd be, Skye. -- Thanks. Fitz throwing shade at Skye.
I hacked my way in. It feels like I cheated. Sweetie, that’s not cheating, that’s being brilliant. In season 3 Lincoln will yell at her “I haven’t hacked my way through life”, as if she had it easy somehow. Given how she feels about it here, that will be a particularly low and/or clueless blow by Sparky.
If you don't know the history of S.H.I.E.L.D. by now, there's no excuse. Unless you fell asleep in Professor Vaughn's class, that's a perfectly acceptable excuse. A “professor Vaughn” was mentioned in 1x02 and it wasn’t favourable there either but in 3x21 “Professor Vaughn’s Third Year Compiler Theory” will save Fitz from becoming a “Primitive”. Quite the memorable teacher then, if it’s the same person.
Skye looks young enough to blend in. Actually, Skye should have been young enough to blend in, because everything about her would work even better, imo, if she’d been a few years younger. I blame Chloe, who apparently told them she was 26 at the auditions (she was 26 last year🤣).
And Fitz looks younger than us. -- Time will come when you won't make fun of me for that. You'll be jealous. You'll be jealous, wrinkly old hags🤣 🤣 🤣
That is a wonderful idea. -- Ward has them from time to time. And now he’s throwing shade at Ward! The little bear is on a roll today😂
So, say you're gonna do what this guy did, leave S.H.I.E.L.D., go off the grid. What's your move? Coulson and May will converse about retirement locations in much more dramatic circumstances in season 2. May will settle on the Australian outback for the both of them.
Coulson would choose Lima to disappear in because of its growing food scene, according to May. Add that he recommended Portland to Randolph for its good food scene and went at least once to a strawberry festival in Nowhere, Pennsylvania and I think there can be no doubts: Coulson is a foodie and it is canon.
I’m tired of secrets. We need to root out all the secrets. Coulson, the company man who trusted the system, is officially gone. Or, well, on a sabbatical really, given that in a few months he will be in charge of nuS.H.I.E.L.D. keeping a whole new host of secrets.
She set up a nearly invisible protocol. The foster system was ordered to move the child around every few months. This never made any sense to me. Wouldn’t the foster system still keep track of the kid? How being in one family or twenty significantly improves her anonimity? Mostly, it’s just increasing the odds of raising a serial killer.
Is she ok? -- She’s safe. Safe being a somewhat relative term, given she’s training to become a field agent and has an alarming propensity for charging into danger. But, sure. She’ll only almost die less than a dozen times in six years. Safe as houses (built on top of an active volcano that erupts every month).
It’s just an idea. Says Fitz, after solving in 30 seconds a problem the other genius in the room had been struggling with for weeks on end.
Why is a guy from Operations hanging out in the Boiler Room? Because there’s an ongoing investigation on the portable Ice Age in which you’re both a witness and a suspect. Please don’t play coy with the Hydra spy.
Sometimes it’s not a bad seed, just a bad influence. Heh 😏
Skye is such a lost, neglected puppy. Coulson ignored her for 3 minutes and she was already starving for affection.
Ian Quinn's not the only one who manipulates people, Skye. We do it all the time, actually teach it at the Academy. It's our trade. Are you talking generics or are you fessing up, Phil?
When we started this, I warned you that you might not like what you learn. -- And I told you that it can't be worse than what I have imagined. -- It is. You still have NO idea guys.
They’re moving him to the Sandbox. Where they’ll brainwashed him into compliance to people with a tentacles fetish. Yup, this really backfired.
The world is full of evil and lies and pain and death, and you can't hide from it, you can only face it. The question is, when you do, how do you respond? Who do you become? Oh, look who the camera pans over at “evil and lies”? Coincidence? I think not. Also, the foreshadowing is blinding. Who do you become facing evil, lies, pain and death?🤯

“I know you, Phil, and I knew you before.”
Let’s add this to all the other ways Philinda indirectly says “I love you.” This episode is prime example of that.
May goes out of her way, and out of character, to make sure Phil is okay. She talks first, she talks more, she talks constantly, just to get him to talk a little. She confesses her private affair just to get a reaction out of him, because she is supposed to be the stone faced person in their partnership. I always wondered if May saw herself in Phil’s shocked behavior. If she feared he would spiral down the same path, or if she needed to make sure he wasn’t losing his mind like Fury had warned her.
That theme of not being your own self, of feeling foreign in your own skin, alien (pun intended), comes back in full force now that both Phil and the audience know something was wrong, and some things were changed. Which is why I find May’s insistence for him to trust her even more heart-wrenching. She’s asking him to trust her, because she would not lie to him, unless it’s for his own good (which she’s doing).
Maybe that’s what leads her to confess her affair with Ward to him. From an objective point of view, May doesn’t need to confess that to Coulson, it’s nots hurting him. But because she can’t tell him something else, something bigger, she settles on this.
I find the fact that Coulson sprints out of the car the second after she tell him hilarious! I’m sure it wasn’t meant to be portrayed that way, but knowing May, she’s probably mentally kicked herself. Same goes with the way Coulson teases her on the Bus. He makes her say it again, just to see her face, and is rewarded with the head tilt and eye narrowing that mean she’s would have kicked him if she didn’t care so much for him.
Also, let’s admit that Coulson broke a few protocols in just letting the affair between two agents on his team slide (and it’s all because of May since we know he’s going to threaten the life out of Ward in the next episode).

My rewatch AoS 1x11 to 1X15
I am very late for the rewatch so I thought I’d keep doing my rewatch review in blocks of five episodes (or whatever seems relevant). So here we go. With TAHITI, we're starting to get a glimpse of what the rest show is going to be since from that moment on. Except for Yes Men (who still gives an important moment information about May at the end) who really should have been in the first part of the season, every episode will be connected in a more or less big way to the main plot of the season. Like Yes Men who's completely independent or Seeds whose main plot doesn't seem linked until the end when we learn that Iain Quinn was linked to it, this first part of 1B makes the transition between the happy Bus days and the darker tone of the last seven episodes that will continue on in season two. So here's a few thoughts about separate episode: The Magical Place I absolutely love that first scene with the team working together perfectly, each using their own talent, it was perfect. Still love it when people call Fitz "sir" in season one, it's just so funny since he's so tiny 😄 May is really smart in that episode. Everyone did exactly as she had planned without even having to tell them (because she knew FitzSimmons and Ward would help Skye escape) and thus also remaining in Hand's good graces. Agent Skye mini May is adorable! But she really is as smart and ressourceful as May, she just needs to be trained in combat and badassness now! I know it's a very unpopular opinion but Raina annoys the crap out of me with her too sweet smiles and exaggeratedly sexy voice. I mean she's obviously really at getting in men's heads, including Coulson but I just find her… annoying. She gets more interesting after she turns, too bad she didn't last longer after that. Love the Coulson rescue mission, again that was some very good team work. And love the reunion scene, although I know at least Skye wanted a group hug. Love May's side smile and "Nice Jacket". "Bet there's no flower dresses where she's going!" "Amen to that, sister." Love that :D "Disengage bracelet" Coulson's dorkiness really is one of his most endearing traits. Seeds First of all, a big thank you for giving us enough FitzSimmons content for hundreds of FitzSimmons Academy Era fics. Love that FitzSimmons scene where they present each other's work mirroring the scene in the Pilot when they introduce each other, it's adorable. Also love the way their speech is so well rehearsed, it's perfectly flawing between them and I bet even that joke Fitz does was written on paper. "Potential can sometimes be dangerous…" Oh Fitz, you're going to remember that one quite bitterly in a few years. FitzSimmons are so proud of their Academy and being such stars there. I love their competition with Ward and Simmons' "Did you have one of these in ops? Did not think so." Yep, cannot imagine Ops having something so fun! SciTech would have definitely been more my kind of place (except for the fact that I didn't study science at all :p) "My room was just like that." We know it's a lie but it's cute, it's Fitz's slightly awkward way of trying to connect. We know he has trouble making first contact and it looks like he's also kind of thrilled of being someone's hero or even a father figure of sorts. Coulson saying "You're talking, it's weird" is the best. That's some pretty dangerous info we're getting on Skye. They really took their time giving us bits of information all through the first season to focus on it in season two. Love the little robot on the bar at the boiler room, never noticed that before, need to include it in a future fic, it's adorable! Too bad Donnie ended up as he did, he really wasn't a bad person and deserved a redemption arc. Again, May is such a freaking badass. And all this without a single superpower! T.R.A.C.K.S Although there will be some criticizing, keep in mind that this episode still remains one of my favorite episodes of the season and the show as a whole. Love the plot, the humor, the action, the different POVs and that's also some top notch drama at the end. So, first of all, the accents. Even I, a person who only some distant italian relatives, can tell that Ward's one is awful. But at least, he's not supposed to be Italian so that's understandable. But that conductor sounds like a mix between Mario and Jen speaking pretend Italian in IT Crowd (hilarious episode by the way, you should look it up if you haven't :D) Then, that train. You should read @valentinaonthemoon‘s post here about it if you haven't because she points out all that is wrong with the train and its route. But seriously, it's so weird. It's all too big and pretty. I have never seen a restaurant carriage with actual cute little wooden tables and chairs and actual room to walk between the table. And what the hell about the actual bed? I've taken a night train to Venice once, even first class wasn't close to looking like that! Anyway, now moving on to all the good parts. May is the definition of badass in this episode. First casually walking on a moving train and then taking of all the bad guys with the knife they stabbed her in the shoulder with. And I also love the little Philinda moment where she lets him help her but didn't let Ward. Love Fitz summing up every cliche Europeans have about Americans "They have some good shows. Lots of nice teeth." and "Someplace affordable with big portions." His pretend relationship and real friendship with Skye is very very sweet in this. I love all the teasing but also the way he insists she takes the gun and tells her to be careful. Jemma is, once again, very heroic in this. Once more, she takes the conscious decision to sacrifice herself for his friends and Fitz in particular. Of course, that grenade wouldn't have killed them but she didn't know that. So really, during the pod scene, when Fitz is faced with the reality that only one can hope to make it to the surface, his decision is easy. And I think it's not only because he loves her and couldn't bear to live without her anyway, but also because she did twice already and he thinks that's it's his turn now. He's just less lucky about the consequences it has on him. (And ironically, Ward provoked it instead of being here to save the day… but I digress). I love Fitz's reaction after Jemma falls. He doesn't run to her because he's stunned and frozen at the idea that she might be dead. His sigh of relief when Skye tells him she's alive is everything. And also the line about her little face is adorable, especially since I only learned recently that it was ad libed by Iain! I didn't remember how heartbreaking Skye was when she tries to call for help and has no voice left at all. For a moment, she must have thought she was going to die all alone in that scary dark room. I mean, I never was really worried because they weren't going to kill her off but still, that's gut wrenching :s But Jemma for the win though! She's not even a medical doctor and so many people are alive thanks to her! And well, of course, THAT HUG! I mean all of FitzSimmons hugs are wonderful but this one is just… I love how it parallels the one from 4x21 where they don't talk and he just has to reach for her shoulder for her to finally let go and cry in his arms. At first, she doesn't fully hug him because she's afraid of putting blood on him (which is very Jemma-like of her) but then she lets go and he doesn't need to say a thing because it's his presence that comforts her the most. Also, FZZT was the moment he realized his feelings had changed for the first time but this feels important too. This is the first of many hugs and the moment their relationship becomes more physical (not in the sexual sense of the word, just physical). As much as I like to imagine they spent their Academy days falling asleep in the same bed every week, I feel like until now, their friendship was very intellectual with only quick very tame physical displays of affection like the touch of a hand or shoulder. Even that kiss on the cheek seemed something wild in the way he reacted and she hesitated before doing it. After that, we'll see more hugs and more daring touches, culminating into the pod scene. (and then regressing and slowly progressing again in season two B and and three) Because being on the field had taught them how hard things could be and they're like each other comfort blanket for a time, thus the need to be physically closer. T.A.H.I.T.I I love how FitzSimmons are sitting so close together on that couch. I think they both need the comfort of each other's presence because they are the only constant in their ever changing world. They really should have let Ward blame himself here. The way May beat the crap out of Iain Quinn was very satisfying. Love Coulson's progression about Tahiti. "Turned out not so magical" and in the next episode it'll be "It sucked". Well, at least he got to see the real, beautiful Tahiti 😞 Awww Trip. I didn't like him all that much the first time. I mean I found him okay and all but only on the second rewatch that I grew to like him. Other than the fact that he could actually get "Witches weekly's most charming award", he really is just a genuine nice, easy going, good guy. Too bad it made him the perfect candidate for shock value death 😞 Love, love, love that scene with FitzSimmons looking through the files. It's stunning and blue light definitely suits Fitz. I also love him during the mission. We know he's kind of scared and he still doesn't like being on the field but he's brave and funny and adorable. "Not afraid, not yet…" "To certain horrible death? Absolutely" Classical sassy Fitz! One thing that had always bothered me during this mission: Couldn't they use non lethal weaponry to "attack" the base. I mean they're protecting a shady secret but they're still (mostly) agents of SHIELD. And they'd been left to die and be buried under all that rock. I get that Coulson wanted the truth and to save Skye but still … I absolutely love the way they decided to handle the Kree reveal. Make Coulson look terrified and let us imagine all the most horrible things and then only in the end the horrible mutilated corpse. Feels a lot like what Hydra did to Skye's mother by the way and very, very evil :s Yes Men I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would despite it not being the strongest episode and it has a lot to do with Sif being a badass. So, first of all, with all the super advanced technology they have, would an Asgardian really be impressed by a bike?!! Skye saying: "I must look awful". Honestly, makeup department guys? They did a really good job when she was close to death but now she doesn't even look a little pale. She doesn't a little circle under eyes and doesn't even look tired at all. And look at her hair! That's not the hair of someone who had been forbidden to leave her bed for days! Fury is already missing, it's getting serious! Sif is so freaking badass and really aces the super hero landing! Also, she's so extra, like she casually throws a car to provide cover. I love her connection with May and I would totally watch a spin off of them kicking ass together. I like the phrase about people being dangerous when they are controlled and how it's another hint at May's backstory. Okay, so I love Sif throwing a car during the fight scene and I love Coulson calling Sif "your ladyship" but seriously, didn't SHIELD have enough women fighters? Honestly! Jemma is totally right about being mad at Coulson about wanting to know more about GH325. Coulson has a good reason for keeping it in house but he should just tell them for god's sake! At this point, we can see that he's still struggling between the whole following the rules and doing things his way because he no longer trusts SHIELD completely. "Ward is not the man you knew. He will not hesitate to kill you." "He might try but he wont." Yep, yep, yep, you don't know how right you were, May! "Because yes, I am that good!" Fitz was cocky and cute there but really not that wasn't a smart move telling Coulson about Lorelei without knowing if he'd been swayed as well. Libido does take a bit of his genius away :p "He's always getting knocked out, isn't he?" Mmmhhh … okay but how freakishly strong is Coulson if he can knock him out with only one punch? "You were saying?" Honestly, they should have copied that collar to use for all the villains and their long boring speeches. And finally dun, dun, dun! They really did a good job making us paranoid and making us think May could be the villain.

Agents of SHIELD 1x12 Rewatch Recap:
“crystalline nucleation process she designed“ “and a delivery mechanism he invented” — just one of the many FitzSimmons projects/plans/concepts that can be abused if it got in the wrong hands, as we’ll see until the later seasons....
You can see the “rivalry” between SciTech and Ops graduates when they brag about being “harder to get into” than the other. lol
“Is this where you got all your PHDs?” “Oh, no, you need at least one to get through the door.” — Jemma not-so-subtly bragging hahah!
Fitzsimmons — the popular kids! I mean with their record, as Professor Weaver will point out a bit later, they’re STILL the youngest graduates to ever enroll.
Skye and the Wall of Valor — and name dropping Bucky Barnes hmmmmmmm
Also, one of the very few truths that came out of Ward’s mouth — “All you need to join is a dedication to the greater good. Coulson saw that in you the moment he met you.”
FitzSimmons talk…. then name drops HYDRA (and Centipede.. and AIM). They really dropped hints DIDN’T THEY?
.... aaaannnnndddddd then Donnie gets iced. LITERALLY.
May and Coulson with a mission of their own to find the missing agent paired with the agent who dropped Skye off on the orphanage...
Skye making fun of Fitz’s young looks — which IRL also parallels Iain’s, LOL (he/Iain looks younger than his age, at least imo)
“My room was just like this, except umm, there was a lot more laundry…. on the floor” FITZ, YOU LIARRRRRR!!!!! Your Academy dorm room was huuuuuuge. and there were things.... but just mostly papers!
“....but I’m tired of secrets, so I’m glad we’re here” LOOK. AT. MAY’S. FACE. She looked so guilty because she herself was hiding something from Coulson :(
AND THEN THE BOMB.
“Agent Ward and I have been having sex”
...and then LITERALLY a second after that they manage to track the agent lmao
“Oh thank God. It’s about the baby girl isn’t it?” -- dude just smashed wood and threw punches at May then realizes they were a “friendly”. Poor May!
“The baby? The girl was the 084?”
DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNN
“We’re not sure SHIELD is the safest place for you right now” SO TRUE, and it also shows how amazing Coulson is. May was about to hand the agent over to SHIELD but he made a different call. :)
.... ALTHOUGH NGL, up until the last few mins I thought the male agent was a baddie!
“Wherever she goes, death follows” errrrrrrr
Skye is getting real good with the spy stuff!!!
Fitz and Donnie at the dorm room — GOSH, the way Fitz talks about Jemma is just…… DUDE. You’re AT LEAST half in love already AND YOU DONT EVEN KNOW IT :333333
OH NO! Well that was an ELABORATE plan to get Fitz to solve Donnie and Seth’s problem. Lots of red herrings!
“How could I have been so stupid?” “Fitz, will you stop?” — MY HEART. Such a little line BUT throughout the seasons we’ll be able to see and follow how Fitz thinks too little of himself at times. MY POOR SON :(((((
I SWEAR Fitz was about to swear THE F WORD when he realized Donnie and Seth had a backer.. which is a-hole Ian Quinn, btw
When Coulson confessed what he found out during his side mission with May to Skye… MY HEART BROKE!!!!!
Donnie and Seth didn’t even realize that the device worked… A LITTLE TOO MUCH.
poor Seth :((
when Coulson told May how Skye reacted to the news… :((((((((
“That's what she took away from the story. Not the family she'll never have, but the one she's always had.”
BRB I’M CRYING
the tag!!!!!!!
“The clairvoyant says hello”
DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNN

“Here I am, telling her something that could destroy her faith in humanity. And somehow, she manages to repair a little piece of mine.“ ~Phil Coulson
I love the foreshadowing where they pan the camera to Ward. When I first watch this ep, I thought of it as a Skyeward moment, where Skye found a family where she belongs with Ward in it. Now I just see Ward smiling behind Skye creepily.

Why did the shot of Skye looking at the wall of Valor with Coulson’s voice over make me tear up?
(and a side note i love the boiler room but also... all the people I know who would be at the sci-tech academy would want to stay as far away from a bar as possible they’re all NERDS why on earth would their hang out be a bar??)

“They'll never know what you sacrificed”.
Or, how to erase sympathy for your protagonist with one single sentence...
I feel for Wanda. A lot. And all of us, I think, would be tempted to bring back their loved ones if we had her powers - sidebar: can I have her powers? I promise not to turn any location with living people in my personal magic playground - but she kept a whole town hostage for weeks in a constant state of terror and grief.
She was mostly unaware of it and she would not have chosen to do it deliberately, but dispelling the Hex is not a heroic sacrifice in this context. It’s simply the right thing to do.
You don’t get brownie points when you stop abusing people. Do you?

Today is the Best Day Ever™ and therefore a Good Day for a timeline recap of Daisy's pre-series backstory, which is unfortunately sparse in details after early infancy.
Warning: it's long. And under the cut.
The Story in the Show:
1983-1987
Jiaying leaves Afterlife sometime after Kora killed herself - in a field of daisies - to do charity work (7x08, 7x10). She ends up in a village in the Hunan province (was it her birthplace?) where she meets Cal Johnson, a young doctor from Milwaukee volunteering for Doctors Without Borders (2x18). Two people from different worlds, and even different times given Jiaying's longevity, both dedicated to helping others. They fall in love and marry.
1988-1989
On the Best Day Ever™, aka July 2nd 1988, their baby girl is born (2x17).
The couple has a few months of parental bliss until S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, who are actually Hydra, kidnap Jiaying and deliver her in Austria to Daniel Whitehall - formerly Werner Reinhardt, a high ranking SS officer and Hydra scientist during WWII - for his sick pursuit of eternal youth. Herr Sadist vivisects her for a week (2x04) before dumping her for dead in a ditch (2x08).
Cal, who was present but powerless when the Hydra goons abducted Jiaying ("We tried to fight. I tried.") leaves baby Daisy with "people [he] trusted" (2x10), tracks down his wife to Europe and saves her, through a combination of skilled field surgery (2x18) and "feeding" her lives, so she can heal herself courtesy of her Inhuman power.
It's unknown how soon they managed to return to China. Jiaying would have needed some time to recover even with her powers, but it's likely that they rushed back to their infant girl ASAP despite her precarious condition. Taking Daisy's orphanage file as a point of reference, which was redacted on April 23, 1989 (1x05), it's maybe March or early April.
An unnamed senior S.H.I.E.L.D. agent calls in a 084 (the code for an "object of unknown origin"), stating that an entire Chinese village had died in an effort to protect "it" (1x12).
Note: this senior agent was a level 8, since that's the clearance level Agent Avery will later fake with his credentials to hide baby Daisy. So it was someone important and with a good deal of discretionary authority, judging by Coulson and Victoria Hand in S1.
According to Raina, "every man, woman and child" in the Hunan village had been "torn apart" by Cal and Jiaying searching for Daisy (1x21).
S.H.I.E.L.D. dispatches a second team to Hunan, which includes Richard Lumley (the very dramatic runaway agent who coined the "wherever she goes, death follows" line) and Linda Avery, both fresh out of the Academy (1x12).
While still en route, they lose communications with the team on the ground. When they arrive, they find the agent that had called in the 084 dead under a bridge, bled out from a gunshot wound to the neck, still holding the sleeping, unharmed and unaware, baby Daisy (1x12).
Lumley's and Avery's team, five agents in total, flies back to the States with the baby but, an unspecified (yet short, going by Lumley's retelling) amount of time after their return, three of them are tortured to death in quick succession. It's, by all indications, Jiaying and Cal who have somehow tracked down the survivors of the operation in Hunan and are going through them one by one in their hunt for their baby daughter. They're also possibly exacting revenge for what happened to Jiaying, since as far as they know it was S.H.I.E.L.D. that took her to Whitehall (S.H.I.E.L.D. = Hydra for Jiaying and Cal).
Linda Avery connect the dots - someone very dangerous is after the baby - and takes matters into her own hands: after dropping off baby Daisy at the Saint Agnes Orphanage - going by the redaction date of that file in 1x05, it's probably in April 1989 - she uses the dead senior agent's credentials to set up a "nearly invisible protocol" (1x12) that ordered the foster system to move Daisy around every few months. Avery's effort to keep her hidden is successful, but she, too, is killed in brutal fashion, protecting the secret.
Lumley, now the only survivor of the Hunan op, goes on the run the day after Avery's death. By the time May tracks him down to Mexico City it's been 23 years according to what she says in 1x12, which would place Avery's death and Lumley's disappearance in 1990 or even 1991 since that episode aired in 2014. It seems far too late to match up with the redacted file's date, but that's what's in the show.
1990-2013
For an unspecified number of years, Jiaying and Cal keep searching for their daughter, until Jiaying realizes what their hunt has turned them into (2x17). She takes a step back, resigns herself to the loss - it's the second daughter she lost to tragic circumstances - and returns to Afterlife, but she will never be the same woman she was before Whitehall.
Cal keeps roaming the planet on his own, searching aimlessly, helping outcasts like the group Raina was running with in Thailand (2x09), practising back-alley medicine and becoming increasingly unstable due to the collateral effects of the Hyde formula he invented to make himself more than human.
Daisy is given the name Mary Sue Potts by the nuns that run Saint Agnes (because her life wasn't hard enough already) and is shipped around the foster system, never staying in one place for more than 2 years (2x17, and that 2 years stretch probably referred to S.H.I.E.L.D.), unaware that it's by design and she isn't really being rejected by so many families. However, she must have had abusive foster parents, too, since she likened her childhood to Ward's (3x09).
At some point in her teens she drops out of high school and maybe also runs away from the system, instead of ageing out. She's homeless and "screwed-up, a lot" - although Daisy is an unreliable narrator in such matters, seeing how she often feels at fault for things entirely out of her control, so who knows how much that "a lot" truly was - until she meets Miles Lydon. The two "screwed-up" kids help each other out of whatever bad they were in (1x05) and start a friendship that will evolve into a professional mentorship, a partnership and a romantic relationship.
Along the way she changes her name to just Skye, with no surname ("no family, no family name to inherit" 1x18), resolves to find out what happened to her parents, becomes a god-tier hacker (and a capable pickpocketer), discovers the redacted version of her orphanage file, buys a Van, wins a laptop in a bet (1x01), dates a Russian hacker (3x13), joins the Rising Tide and finally hatches a fairly reckless scheme to bait S.H.I.E.L.D. so she can gain access from the inside of the agency that holds the truth of her origin. A plan that succeeds far beyond her expectations.
Some Questions and Theories:
Who massacred the Chinese villagers, and who were the villagers protecting baby Daisy from?
Quite likely Jiaying and Cal themselves, which is what Raina told Ward in 1x21 after all. Either because Jiaying needed lives to heal - although the timeline and logistics are a bit iffy: she would have needed lives to feed on ASAP after Cal stitched her back together and they were in Austria at the time - or because upon their return to Hunan S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, possibly Hydra-affiliated, were on the scene, had taken or were trying to take Daisy, and the Johnsons were too far gone already to distinguish between them and innocent bystanders. So they killed everyone in their path and everyone in the general vicinity of their path, too.
How did S.H.I.E.L.D. learn of the massacre and the 084's presence?
An agent called it in, yes, but how did that agent know? Was S.H.I.E.L.D. monitoring the village? Did they know about Jiaying (who had been freed from Whitehall's clutches in 1945 by Peggy Carter and the Howling Commandos)? Hydra did, in both cases. Was that agent Hydra, too, one who however drew the line at kidnapping babies for the likes of Whitehall, and so arranged for "proper" S.H.I.E.L.D. to send backup, only to be killed by his fellow nazis? Or was it Hydra-affiliated S.H.I.E.L.D., trying to get their hands on Daisy all along, and they failed because the villagers protected her and then Jiaying and Cal killed them?
Is it possible that Hydra massacred the village because the villagers were protecting the baby from them?
Maybe. That's not what Raina said and she presumably learned the story directly from Cal, but she is also a known manipulator. If Raina lied - or interpreted one of Cal's rants incorrectly - the Johnsons would have come back from Austria to find a massacred village and no trace of their baby, and immediately assumed S.H.I.E.L.D. was the culprit because that's who the Hydra agents had said they were when they had taken Jiaying.
The dead "lead agent" who called in the 084 and was carrying baby Daisy to (presumed) safety died of a gunshot. Who shot him?
Guns don't seem to match with Jiaying's and Cal's M.O. But if Cal hadn't invented his Hyde formula just yet, it would make sense he would have armed himself, given the circumstances.
What was Big S.H.I.E.L.D. doing when baby Daisy was brought back to the States?
Agent Avery clearly did not trust her direct superiors nor the rest of the agency to keep the baby safe. Did Avery suspect S.H.I.E.L.D.'s involvement in the Hunan tragedy? Or was she simply being extra careful, ensuring the shortest possible paper trail leading to the baby, even in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s highly classified and secured servers?

I don't like the "Dousy happened too fast" complaint because I feel like it doesn't take into account who Daisy is.
Daisy is a resolute person. She's lighting quick going from idea to action, sometimes to a fault. Whatever it is, personal or professional, she goes for it. And while she has self-worth issues, tangled in a mess of abandonment issues and survival's guilt, she is also sure of herself, sometimes to the point of cockiness, sometimes because she fakes it until she makes it.
What is truer to her character? Hesitating, pining, dancing around her feelings, pondering the pros and cons for months on end... or going straight for it?
In addition, there is an entire year of Dousy that we don't see and that is more than enough time to freak out, mess up and make up. In the epilogue, things are going: she's not labeling it and doesn't dare voicing the full extent of her feelings. It's still the beginning of their journey together (in more ways than one).

the best thing was watching Barshim (first Olympic gold ever for his country I believe, what a fantastic show from him as well) and Tamberi hugging and joking during their tv interviews and Tamberi running to hug Jacobs after his win. When sport is like this, it's just the best.
