"Do you think she'll be impressed?" AJ asks his trusty sidekick, Mew Mew. 

He gets purring as a response so he takes it as a yes. AJ had joined the scouts as an afterschool activity and he's earned a few badges. He's excited because it won't be just his parents in the house but his Aunt Vera's friend, Rahmi Watson - is coming to stay with them for a few days.

"Thank you again for letting me stay with your family." Rahmi tries to tell them as the couple as they have a spirited debate over which way the toilet paper roll should go. 

"It's not a big deal, Vera insisted on it." Apollo tells Rahmi which earns him an exaggerated hand gesture from his wife. "I mean, you are most welcome. We are happy to be helpful."

Naya looks at him and shakes her head. "We're glad to have you, Rahmi. I'm looking forward to interviewing you on Henford-on-Bagley's well known Cottage Core fashion but most of all, getting to know you better."

Rahmi smiles at them both, Vera had given her a nudge to go to Sulani to visit Ukupanipo and asked Apollo and Naya to let Rahmi stay in her old room. It'd save money, which Rahmi is grateful for - and she's also looking forward to getting to know the other half of the Grant clan better.

After breakfast, Rahmi follows the directions to Ukupanipo's house. She meets him outside and gets to meet the famous Mr. Whiskers, who Ukupanipo adopted from Brindleton Bay after Mr. Whisker's term as mayor ended.

She busies herself looking for seashells. She wants enough for each of her kids to have two of their very own, plus she wants a few for herself. She figures she better get started on her quest.

Naturally, Ukupanipo invites Rahmi out for a swim. She stays on shore for a bit, watching him swim around in his merman form. It's the first time for her seeing a merfolks beautiful tail. Despite knowing Vera for years, she's never seen her friend in her mermaid form. It's something she plans to tell her kids about, with Ukupanipo's permission of course.

Rahmi finally joins him in the water and she decides she likes swimming in the ocean over swimming in a pool. The island is beautiful. She can understand why someone would want to live in Sulani. Although she was very hesitant at first to leave her kids and the farm, Rahmi is glad she's taken her friend up on his invite to visit the island. She feels relaxed and happy, something she hasn't felt in longer than she can remember.

Ukupanipo is pleased Rahmi has come to visit him, he wants to show her his world and most importantly, he wants her to enjoy herself. He hopes this visit brings them closer in her friendship because he really likes hanging out with her. Sometimes, it's been a bit lonely for him. He's waiting to find his soulmate and while he's friendly with all the other merfolk on the island, they all have families now. He feels a bit like the black sheep of the clan.

Obviously, Naya feels most comfortable around Dís. They have been tied by the hip since they were only little kids. Having each other around has become really natural.

Overall, she feels quite comfortable around everyone. It would take a lot for her to feel bad around you.

As for Ofelia, apart from Kíli of course, she feels most comfortable when she is around the Ri brothers or Bilbo. She also feels quite comfortable when she is with Oín.

Ofelia knows when people don't want her around, or when they don't like her. So she will tend to stay away from them.

June 8

Naya Grant has a rare day off, so she decides to take her family to one of the local beaches. Granted, they literally live on the water but it’s more private. This is public, more chance for Apollo to hang out with his fellow merfolk and perhaps a chance for AJ to hang out with some other kids. Sometimes she worries about him not having enough interaction with other kids his age. They’ve started giving Lily three days off a week so AJ can experience daycare with other children. Not being able to have another baby still hurts Naya at times, though her and Apollo haven’t stopped trying.

AJ is a happy little duckling in the water, just like the duck he insists chewing on after he splashes it in the water a few times.

Hours of fun later and some grilled out hamburgers, thanks to Lily, AJ is busy building a sand castle – Lily has pulled her employers aside. She knows it’s time to tell Mr. and Mrs. Grant about her true nature and who she’s related to. Thankfully, Caleb, his wife and Lilith had left it up to her to tell them. They may fire her, she knows this. She will miss AJ if that’s the case. She’s grown very fond of the little boy.

Lily has tried to figure out how to tell them since her visit from Lilith but still isn’t sure what to say. She knows they’re no stranger to the supernatural. Apollo’s family has merfolk spanning back generations and his brother-in-law is a vampire, who also happens to be her cousin.

Naya and Apollo for their part of worried Lily is going to quit, she does an awesome job taking care of AJ and makes amazing food. They’ve felt spoiled.

“I’m sure you’ve noticed the scars on my chest.”Lily starts, she rarely wears anything that reveals them. They both nod, curiously. “I’m a werewolf. I got those in a fight years ago.”

Apollo slow blinks while Naya just stares at Lily. They’re both processing the words out of her mouth. “That’s why AJ kept saying Wily every time I’d show him a picture of a wolf on his flashcards…” Apollo comments, mostly to himself. The pieces were coming together.

“And why he calls you woof woof.” Naya supplies, slowly catching up to her husband’s train of thought.

AJ had toddled in on Lily in her werewolf form one day and figured it out, even at his young age. “He’s a smart boy.”

Both of AJ’s parents nod in unison with smiles on their faces. Lily takes a breath, they seemed to be handling it okay but she wasn’t done.

“Just like merfolk, werewolves age more slowly…but even slower than your kind, Apollo. I was actually born in the 1800’s.” Lily pauses, letting that sink into their minds for a few moments.

“Wow! So you got to see the rise of all the greats in the fashion industry!” Naya exclaims. Fashion is her job after all. 

Lily wasn’t expecting that comment but nods. “And some of their falls too.”

“Wait….that means you’ve been around as long as Caleb and Lilith..” Apollo comments, thinking out loud. He squints at the older female next to him. 

The werewolf nods her head. “I’m their cousin. Their mother was my Aunt.”

There’s complete silence outside of the waves splashing to shore against the sand beside them.

Apollo slowly smiles “This really is a small world. You gotta meet my sister! She’s about ready to pop but you should meet her. Family is extremely important to merfolk and it looks like you’re part of it.”

“Does Vera know about all of this?” Naya questions, glancing over at her son who is still happily building a sand castle, oblivious to all the adult stuff going on around him.

“I’m sure Caleb told her, those two rarely keep things from each other. Caleb was here not too long ago so you two have seen each other, right?” Apollo asks Lily, who nods at him.

“I’ll set a meeting up.”

Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival is a two-day annual film festival that is founded by African Voices magazine and Long Island’s University Media Arts Department at the Brooklyn Campus. The two-day festival highlights Black women filmmakers and this year’s theme is #IGotYourBack. More than 40 films will be screened throughout the weekend for the public and tastemakers to view.

The Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival & Lecture Series is a two-day annual film festival founded by African Voices magazine and Long Island University’s Media Arts Dept., Brooklyn Campus.

Established in 1997, Reel Sisters continues to being dedicated to providing opportunities for women of color filmmakers to advance their careers in the film industry. It is also the first Academy Award qualifying film festival dedicated to women of color.

The theme for this year’s festival is #IGotYourBack: A Time for Holding Space & Healing, which showcases films dedicated to looking out for one another made for and by women with over 40 films being screened during the season. Reel Sisters 22nd Anniversary event will take place from Oct. 19 & 20th, 2019 at Alamo Draft House in Brooklyn.

Here are some of the featured films:

Skin Skin is a feature documentary about exploring through identity the meaning of beauty in all the different shades of black. It is set in present-day Lagos, where Nollywood actress Beverly Naya goes on a journey to learn about contrasting perceptions of beauty. She speaks to school children, traders, artists, beauty entrepreneurs, and sex workers. This narrative is interwoven by poignant personal accounts of individuals who have dealt with the pressure to conform to certain standards of beauty, revealing how colorism continues to shape the face of the entertainment industry in Africa. Beverly concludes her journey with a trip to her hometown exploring her rich cultural heritage with her mother and grandmother.

POCCON POCCON stands for P.O.C con (people of color). POCCON is a short documentary film that explores the world of anime conventions through the eyes of POC (people of color) cosplayers. The film will explore some of the issues they face as cosplayers of color. It will follow a few cosplayers as they attend Katsucon, a local anime convention that takes place at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Maryland. The cosplayers will give the personal accounts of issues they have faced within the cosplay community.

PAUL TAYLOR AMERICAN MODERN DANCE CELEBRATES DONALD McKAYLE

Paul Taylor and Donald McKayle were personally close during their lives, and it was Taylor’s wish to offer a program of McKayle’s dances under his rebranding as “American Modern Dance,” of which McKayle’s work represents some quintessential examples. On Tuesday, November 12, three of his seminal dances, spanning five decades comprised the tribute program, all performed by non-Taylor dancers. 

Plans for this free tribute concert have been in the works by executive director John Tomlinson since McKayle’s passing last year. The program reminded an enthusiastically welcoming, more racially diverse than usual audience how important these dances are to the American dance canon. Dayton Contemporary Dance Company repeated their passionate rendition of “Rainbow ‘Round My Shoulder” (1959) which they also did in 2018, when the company brought McKayle himself from Irvine, CA, to be present.

The dance is a physically and emotionally cathartic ode to the energy of a chain gang, slogging through back-breaking labor to traditional work songs, buoyed, by memories of Sweetheart, Mother, Wife, danced with grounded power and sensitivity by Countess V. Winfrey. Duets with her drew Young Man, Quentin Apollo, and Older Man, Devin Baker out of the gang momentarily. They and the other five men on the crew, Michael Green, Robert Pulido, Alvin Rangel, Matthew J. Talley, and William Robertson were electrifying in the gut-busting motifs that McKayle created to translate hard labor into dynamic dance. The tragic denouement that leaves the two principal men murdered, is devastating. 

Dancers from the Juilliard School performed “Crossing the Rubicon” (2017), made for the Etude Ensemble at UC Irvine, where McKayle taught in his final years. Although it is a typical “dance for students,” featuring an all-inclusive cast crowding the stage, the combination of careful restaging by Bret Yamanaka and the top-notch skill of the Juilliard dancers rendered a high-impact performance. The dance was inspired by the struggles and fears of world refugees and set to rhythmically driving, Indian-influenced musical selections by Anoushka Shankar. It opens with a heartfelt duet, danced convincingly by Naya Lovell and Alexander Sargent, followed by an extended unison section for the nineteen-dancer cast that continuously recombines simple steps in formations and patterns that accumulate in impact and force by variation and repetition.

  The closing ballet, “Songs of the Disinherited” (1972), first performed by the Inner-City Repertory Dance Company of Los Angeles is given a soulful resurrection by Ronald K. Brown/Evidence. Stirring arrangements of a song, “I’m on My Way,” possibly from the historic Underground Railroad backs a trio (Aliyah Etheridge, Shaylin Watson, and Demetrius Burns) of desperate refugees; a depression era blues song “Upon the Mountain,” defines a brisk, male duet (Michael Battle and Charles Grant.) 

But the emotional pinnacle of the piece, if not the entire program, comes as Annique Roberts embodies Latin rage, resilience, and redemption to the wrenching “Angelitos Negros,” played on piano and sung in Spanish by Roberta Flack. “Shaker Life” brings the dance to an exhilarating finish, adding nine additional dancers from Juilliard and Dayton, and guest artist Stephanie Powell, who did the rigorous and loving re-staging of the dance.

November 2 to 8 - Part 2

True to her word, Vera arranges with Caleb to take AJ and Este out to the new park on the island, giving Apollo time alone to talk to Naya once she arrives home from work.

"How was work?" Apollo asks when Naya enters their bedroom. He asks her every night, he wonders if she thinks he asks just to seem like a good husband but he actually listens to what she has to say, wanting to know about her life away from their home. 

"Good. We finished our project for Mid-November today." She replies, looking at him. He looks serious and that causes a knot to form in the pit of her stomach. She removes her high heels, placing them onto her shoe rack before joining Apollo on the love seat.

"I'd like to talk about our situation, Naya." Apollo starts, not wanting to use the "we need to talk" phrase. It always sounds so harsh to him. 

"Okay." Naya replies, folding her hands nervously. In all honesty, she knew this was coming. They had been dancing around it for a while. Apollo has tried to talk to her about it few times but she isn't a fan of any type of confrontation. 

"I'm worried about how much time you're spending at the office." Apollo says gently, he doesn't want their talk to break into a fight. That's the last thing he wants. Naya nods and he continues. "AJ says he misses you and I miss you too."

Hearing her son misses her it what really stings. Not that she don't care that her husband misses her, she does but it hits different when it's your child. "I love you both, please don't doubt that."

"We don't doubt that, honey. But I don't want you to miss out on our son's childhood in favor of your career." Apollo's voice rises slightly and he takes a breath to calm himself.

Naya shifts, looking at her husband. "Do you think I'm picking my career over our family??" She asks, getting a bit emotional. 

Apollo sighs "No. I just...don't understand. We have money. I could get it if we needed the money but we don't. I will never be one of those guys that is all macho and tells his wife she can't work, but you don't have to work so hard..."

"Yes I do!" Naya yells before she can censor herself. She blows out a breath and tries to regain her composure, as Apollo doesn't even look at her. He's staring at their bed instead. "This isn't about money, Apollo. I want to make a name for myself in the Fashion Industry before I'm old and grey."

Apollo hears his wife's voice break at end and looks at her, things make a little more sense now. He wants to hug her but she doesn't look like she'll let him at this moment. He stands, thinking.

Naya slowly rises after her husband, sniffling a bit. "I know you don't really get it because you're happy where you are with your career but I'm not."

"Some things are more important than a career." Apollo reminds her. "Time won't rewind just because you want it to."

Naya surprises both herself and Apollo whens he latches onto him. "I already had to give up one dream, please don't expect me to give up another."

He knows she's talking about the fact that they didn't get to have more kids. It was a dream he had to give up too but at least they have AJ.

"This doesn't fix anything for AJ." Apollo comments after a few moments of silence. 

Naya sighs, still holding onto her husband, the man she's loved since high school. "Maybe...I could try working from home a few days a week?" She suggests, she did it when she was pregnant with AJ and they were all hiding out from Ciara and Man Bun guy. 

"If you think it'll work." Apollo comments, he feels like he has no energy left for some reason. He feels drained. 

"It's worth a shot. It'll allow me to still work but also be here more." Naya tells him, otherwise she isn't sure what to do.

Apollo nods, he isn't sure if it will solve things because she'll be absorbed in her work but it would at least cut down on the time she spends traveling on certain days - that may open up her schedule a little more to spend time with their family.

Even with the issues between them, they still love one another and their son. Time will tell if their new arrangement works out.

Caleb told me Este was up bright and early this morning - he lets me sleep in, I'm truly blessed.

Lucky was by her side and they seemed to be staring at him in anticipation. I suppose even babies and pets know it's Winterfest day.

When I did get up and get around to help prepare for the day, Tucker was hanging out around the Christmas tree. It's his first Winterfest as well.

We invited a lot of people, understandably not everyone can make it. Dakota, Jillian and Joey will be celebrating with Jillian's family this year and I'm happy for them, if my parents were still alive - I'd want to celebrate with them too.

I got to cuddle my Godson as his Dad got into an argument with this reflection? I'm not sure what's going on with August. Aubree told me his sister showed up out of nowhere and it's been really weighing on him.

We had so many infants in the house that we had to rotate them between the two cribs. There is no shortage of someone who wants to hold them so it's fine.

Before lunch, Este and Tucker had to get in a nap and they happily did it on the rug in the living room. It was adorable.

We tried to include as many people as we could this year. I'm so happy Lily was able to join us. I invited her fiance but I can understand why he didn't want to come into a house with so many vampires.

There was hours of family and friends, just enjoying time together which is so, so precious.

The time spent together is more important and priceless than any gift…but I still enjoy giving my little brother a gift that makes him make his "What in the heck Vera?!" look.
