It always makes me so sad when I see people demand different songs that are not on the setlist to the point where they almost bully the band into playing them 😬 I went to see them in Düsseldorf and it was such a great show! My friend and I were so happy with the setlist because it felt inherently 5SOS (idk if that makes sense haha we just felt like it represented who the band is very well) ☺️ I get that people have very strong emotional connections to certain songs, but so does the band and it seems like they are very deliberate with their song choices. The shows of this tour especially are so thought through and everything seems to be connected with the visuals and everything, that it somehow feels wrong to disrupt that. And it’s not a bad show just because they don’t play the songs you might want them to play 🤷🏼‍♀️
Yes, I agree with all of your points! From the very first show, I was so blown away by the set list - I feel like it's an impressive overview of their entire discography thus far and it's incredible how well the songs flow and transition together, even ones from different eras! And yes, the staging elements like the lights and visuals make it even more apparent just how tailored and fine tuned the whole production is. I really do think it's their best show yet and I say that as a hard YB/MYT era stan 😌
It'd be impossible for them to make everyone happy all of the time, so complaints about the setlist come with the territory and I think they know that - the thing that's wild to me about the people who flipped out when Talk Fast/Beside You/Lover of Mine started fluctuating is that you can bet those songs were removed with good reason (The combined total time of those three songs is about the same amount of time of their live arrangement of Blender plus Me Myself and I, both mid-tour additions to the set. Obviously we don't know if that's the reason for that switch over but it would make sense that with the set approaching 30 songs now, they would want to start evening it out, especially in light of Ashton's hospitalization, I'm sure they're being mindful of how much energy they're exerting during an already exhausting show 🤷🏻‍♀️), it's not like they just stopped playing them on a whim.
My whole thing with the Pizza debacle is just how disrespectful it is? Like yes, we have a Very Specific relationship with this band and we like to tease each other back and forth but yelling over them (even after they adamantly tell you no we're not playing that) to the point that they can't get thru their speeches is rude and inappropriate in any context. (Not to mention how awful it must be for them as artists who have two full albums of songs they're proud of, that they've never gotten to play live and people are still more interested in demanding a joke song from when they were kids 🙃)
They gave in and "spontaneously" played Pizza 5 times on this tour (before Cincinnati) and each time with increasing reluctance in my opinion. (I watched a live stream of Chicago and I believe the way I described the performance to someone was "defeated") Adding it to the set isn't a fun victory or a bit, they clearly decided that sacrificing the 40 seconds it takes to play the song is easier than the show being disrupted for minutes on end while people riot for it. And that... kind of sucks lol 🤷🏻‍♀️

There's a lot of things going on and it's tonight Bill Skarsgard and yes it's Luke George is Dave from space Odyssey 2001 and space Odyssey 2010 and they go to the Moon to investigate something and the movies are backwards and they see it and they don't believe it and I see it with equipment and they do trace it and they do see what it is and it came from Saturn they say and it's really not supposed to be there and they forced it and they made it and then they followed that's coming up pretty soon they find signal coming from the Moon and it is a relay and they do find something coming from the Moon to that thing and it looks like one of Garth ships. Other events are coming up but that apparently might be coming up pretty soon and it's because his father finds the transformers and not here since Chicago and they find a signal relay and it's most likely Bill's stuff and that's what they're fighting over already and that's why he's in Chicago and Bill shows up in California
-there are a few jokes going around and Bill is joking with his grandkid it's really the other way around a little they both started it on it
-there's some other things happening and they're pretty horrendous the morlock decided to attack the max and the Mac bases they struck the bases overseas in the eastern hemisphere and they're really tan of size and they hit all 10 and about 20 small ones and about 500 real small ones they hit a lot of stuff and it actually plus a couple navy bases and about three subterranean that were only sub training and that's about half of the basis of that kind they really don't have that many but they're looking for easy Intel tonight and they met with fierce resistance and then they started the Counter-Strike already and they started wiping out these forces that were gathering to go after the basis and they started to wipe out areas with them in it but specifically where they knew they were and they wanted fairly aggressively in the Western hemisphere they went to New York and Cincinnati and pretty much every major city and with spaceships too and they hit about 500 spots in each City and it's like a block each and that's a lot in the city is a mess in this fires they also hit the suburbs and they hit the Oscars in the Oscars they hit 300 areas they're bigger and all together and they're probably four by four miles and this is an almost every major city I should say it's about half the cities to strike the suburbs areas and they know where they are there and it's mostly just them it's a weird enclave and they hit like madness and those areas are big like 20 by 30 and they hit probably half of them they're still hitting them and we hate to say it but they're going to hit the eastern hemisphere there's only a few more places where these guys are and they're going to lay into them tonight
There's several other items they were attacking and yes her son fell asleep for about an hour and he is woken up and my he is harassing those who are harassing him just now they were tendium some kind of daydream. Nothing really happened it's just what they're doing and the more like are down and they are poor, they're giving a pizza by their boss no they are hit by the max and they're in a lot of trouble and the macks are on the tirade here in the east coast they started hitting and it hit five out of the 10 very large and so on in this case it's the morlock hitting the Mac baces. There are a lot of hits going on right now globally and it is the max.
Turns out the max hit 300 bases of cork and warlock really and that was in the Western hemisphere. Those bases were about 10x10 they hit them out 500 that are 8x5 and 3,000 that are 4x4 and they hit 10 that are about 20 by 20 and those are special bases down below the morlock had bunker systems that were probably by 40 by 60 they're pretty big and they had plans for those for the rest of society and they also destroyed 20 by 30 basis the bunkers below a 6x70x80 there there the empire proper and they're going nuts on them and they're hitting bases of operation 20x50 MI probably about three of those. Their time the tax in the Western hemisphere are Non-Stop. They're loading up for more attacks shortly and they will continue they said until the attitude changes and yeah the attitude is really stupid from our perspective as well.
There's a war in space waging and the morlock sent 400 million ships more to Venus and they were intercepted by the empire they said it too we all look like jackasses because of these losers they're hugely stupid they said the boys been giving orders to try and save his wife I'm not really getting what he's saying those people are somehow so they decided it was just stupid to let them continuously do that and it was another 400 million ships they lost they only have 400 million left and the empire is going to go after them and whatever is left of Tommy f and these people are idiots and just sit there waiting for it.
-there a couple more things we're going to publish

For birthday prompts the sastiel summer between season 9 and 10?
this loosely takes part in touch verse (though all you really need to know is that they're in an established relationship). If you want something less established then I cannot recommend Kettering (I Was Checking Vitals) by Fabella more. (It hurts, tho. It hurts so good).

“Sam?”
One breath Sam had just turned to see Cas, one hand outstretched, a concerned look on his face, and the next he was in his arms. He’d been keeping a tight grip on his panic – Cas had been gone, and then Dean had been dead, and then Dean had been gone – but all of a sudden it was overflowing. He was shaking, every muscle held taught, the shoulder of Cas’ coat turning damp where he’d buried his face into it.
“Cas,” he managed, voice ragged, arms squeezing tighter.
One of Cas’ hands was fisted in his shirt at the small of his back, the other pressed hard between his shoulder blades, holding him close. Sam tried to focus on that, on the breath on the side of his neck, on anything but the out of control race of his heart.
“Dean’s gone,” he choked out, and Cas’ arms tightened.
Eventually, eventually he got control of himself. Got the whole story out, heard Castiel’s.
Cas stroked a hand through his hair, pulled back far enough to look him in the eye. “We’ll find him, Sam,” he said, solemn and sure.
Steadied by Cas’ warm hand on his shoulder, Sam set up an alert for traffic incidents involving a black ‘67 Impala and then another for the plate number. Whoever took Dean, if they were smart, would’ve changed out the plates. But there was a chance they weren’t smart.
There was no way to tell what direction they drove when they left the bunker - but they went looking anyway. Sam drove. He wasn’t too sure on the hour count since he’d last slept, but he wouldn’t be able to if he tried anyway. Too keyed up, running his thumbnail back and forth the vinyl of the starting wheel, blinking hard when his visions blurred.
Three gas stations who didn’t think they’d seen an Impala and Sam was gunning for the fourth cardinal direction, but Cas put a hand on his arm and said his name, and-
He was shaking again, he dimly realised. And Cas looked exhausted too - guilt curdled in his stomach for a moment, and he nodded.
“Yeah,” he said. “Let’s go home.”
(He lay with Cas pressed up against his spine and his heart pounding for hours before he fell asleep).
In the morning there was a traffic report for a car matching the Impala’s description running a red in Dallas. Another in Atlanta. A hit and run in Nashville. They covered the ground - thankful that the worst injury was a broken arm.
No good shots of who had been driving.
No more leads.
They picked up news of what sounded like a poltergeist on their way out of Nashville and Sam - he didn’t want to. He wanted to keep looking for Dean. Even without a direction he just wanted to keep driving, and Cas wasn’t going to judge him from the passenger seat. He took the job, and Cas’ hand covered his on the seat between them.
They stopped for the night in a motel. Cas ran interference while Sam got the bags planted to expel the ghost.
There was a moment of relief they’d done it that way when a heating unit wrenched itself off the wall and launched itself towards Cas’ head in an arc of dust - a flash of light knocked it back the way it came. Sam pushed the last bag into place, ready for silence.
Instead Cas launched into a fit of wracking coughs. Relief turned to worry - Sam went to him laid a hand on his back, felt the fit subside slowly. Cas straightened from where he’d doubled over, wiping at streaming eyes.
“Sorry,” he said. “I inhaled at the worst possible time.”
He’d phrased it like a joke, but Sam’s laugh was hollow. “Are you alright? I’ve never seen you do that before.”
Cas forced a smile, pressed a little closer before stepping away. “I’m fine.”
More police reports. Louisville, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Chicago. Then nothing for a while until a man matching Dean’s description held up a liquor store outside of Vegas. No sign of him by the time they got there - plus the store’s CCTV had been on the fritz. But it had apparently been on the fritz for weeks, so nothing specific to the robbery. They took statements, the found a motel. Sam checked his laptop and found a new parking ticket for a ’67 Chevy Impala in Reno.
“Do you think it’s really him?” Sam said.
Cas said, “I don’t know.”
They drove to the bunker, for another fruitless search into the Mark, knocked out a murderous shapeshifter on the way. Sam kept his hands braced on the steering wheel so they didn’t shake. Cas watched him.
Days turned to weeks, turned to a month, turned into two.
Jody got a tip off about someone that sounded like Dean in Montana, they drove there and found stories about an asshole who’d broken three chairs and won a four-against-one bar fight, but again no proof - a man with a black eye and a split lip cottoned on to them maybe knowing the victor, and while they managed to avoid him getting hurt more, they didn’t manage to avoid Sam getting a bottle to the head.
Cas healed it in the car, grace sealing the cut, clearing up what felt like the beginning of a concussion.
They got a room there, too tired to keep moving, and Sam fell asleep curled into Cas’ chest.
Sam woke up and Cas - Cas was breathing even. Eyes closed, face slack, and Sam was used to Cas’ eyes opening as soon as he sat up. He didn’t need sleep, he stayed in Sam’s bed for the contact, and for Sam’s sake. But this. This was sleep. Real sleep.
Unnerved, Sam gently pulled himself free of Cas’ arms, of the tangle of sheets. Went to the bathroom to get ready for the day.
When he emerged, Cas was blinking awake, eyebrows knitting in confusion. “Sam?” he said, grogginess adding an unfamiliar tone to his voice. His eyes sought out Sam in the doorway to the bathroom.
“You were sleeping,” Sam said. “I didn’t know you needed to.”
“I don’t,” Cas said, pushing himself up to sit against the headboard. “I- I didn’t.”
Sam sat on the bed, facing him. “What’s going on?”
“Nothing,” he said, too quickly.
Sam shut his eyes. He heard Cas sigh.
“It’s nothing you should concern yourself over.” A hand covered his. He opened his eyes to see Cas watching him intently. “Sam, you have enough to worry about.”
Sam reached out to cup Cas’ jaw, leaned in to press their foreheads together. There were arguments he could make, there was logic, there was reasoning, there was a banked but still burning ember of anger, but all that came out of his choked-up throat was a small, petulant, “Are you lying to me?”
“I’m sorry,” Cas said.
It wasn’t an answer. They went back to the hunt.
When Dean had been missing for three months Jody made them drop in for dinner. Alex and Claire, and a couple of bottles of wine with dinner, and it was domestic in a way Sam had never had. He’d pretended to, with Amelia, when Dean and Cas had both been gone. The reminder felt bitter. The house, the conversation, the rapport, it was all warm, and it felt like there was glass around Sam keeping that warmth from reaching him.
He washed the dishes, focussed on the hot water and the suds, got lost in it for a while until Jody came over and started to dry.
“You don’t need to do that,” he said. “I was going to once I finished.”
“Maybe I don’t trust you to know where to put things,” Jody said. He managed a laugh, and they worked in silence for a little while, before she asked softly, “How are you really going?”
“I’m going,” he said. “It’s-“ He looked at his hands in the water. “I don’t know.”
“You’ll find him,” she said, sure and steady. “If he’s out there, you’ll find him.”
If he was out there. Sam nodded, made an attempt at a smile. Scrubbed at a stubborn scrap of food burnt onto the side of a casserole dish.
“That angel of yours is taking care of you?” she asked.
“He’s trying,” Sam said. “I’m not that easy to take care of.”
He got the distinct impression she was seeing through all the bravado when she said, “You let me know if there’s anything I can help with, ok?”
“Of course,” he said, knowing he was never going to take her up on it.
Sam still felt sober, but he’d had enough of the wine that Cas drove. He dozed in the passenger seat. Woke up as the car pulled over. Blinked to see a stretch of road in the headlights - turned to see Cas leaning forward, braced on the steering wheel, digging his hands into his eyes. Turned away to cough into his elbow.
He reached out to brush his fingers against Cas’ arm. “You ok?”
Cas looked at him. Apologetic. Maybe ashamed. “Tired,” he admitted.
Sam nodded, rubbed a hand over his face, sat up further. “I’ll drive the rest of the way.”
Cas clearly wanted to protest, but he didn’t. They got back to the bunker. To their bed, and Sam pulled Cas against him, arms wrapped around him, face pressed firmly into his hair.
“Will you tell me yet?” he whispered, into the back of Cas’ neck.
Cas took his hands, pulled them more firmly together. He didn’t say a word.
Month five.
Cas tried to hide but the cough was getting worse. He was sleeping more often. Leads for Dean would come in a rush, all of sudden, and then all turn out to be useless. They got some hunting done, when they could. A werewolf in Nebraska. A nest of vampires in Texas.
They were in Seattle.
A rumour that could’ve been Dean turned into a rumour about kelpies turned into a very real water hag, and they had the damn birch stakes blessed with salt and the blood of a fresh slain calf - and that had been a bitch and a half to get - but that didn’t make fighting it any easier. They were both exhausted, both running on empty but still running, and Sam-
Sam saw Cas go down and go down hard. Saw him lying still while the hag raised two spindly but heavy fists over it’s head and he- and he.
He gave up all pretence of strategy and just charged - got the stake up underneath the hag’s ribs, even as one of it’s claws stabbed solidly through the underside of his arm. The hag dropped, the stake pulled out of his hand, but the claw in his arm was stuck fast and it wrenched and-
His vision went white for a moment, cleared with him on his knees in the filthy water. Dead hag. Arm useless - caught. Cas still not moving.
The claw came out with a rush of blood, black spots in his vision, he blinked them away, scrambled over to where Cas was lying, his name falling out of Sam’s mouth in a desperate sob. He was breathing, Sam realised, and even as he slid his fingers to check his pulse, his eyes were opening.
“Sam,” he gasped, reaching - his fingers dug into Sam’s useless arm and Sam choked back a pained noise. Still enough for Cas to realise something was wrong - his eyes rolled wildly down to see the blood, see the arm dangling from the shoulder - within seconds he was pushing himself up, reaching out more deliberately, power cracking at his fingertips and-
“No,” Sam shook his head, “Just help me keep pressure, don’t-“
“Sam,” Cas said.
“Cas, every time you use your grace you get worse,” Sam said, and Cas flinched.
But he didn’t heal Sam.
Later, when they’d gotten to the motel, when Sam had gotten Cas to help pop his shoulder back into place, when he’d stitched up the wound from the water hag, that was when he made an ultimatum.
“I’m gonna keep looking for Dean,” he said. “But you shouldn’t.”
“Sam,” Cas protested, but he just shook his head.
“You’re not on your game,” he said. “And, I’m not- I’m not losing you.”
Cas drew him in with one hand tight in his hair, the other splayed on his back. “I’m not losing you either,” he said, fierce and hoarse.
Sam shut his eyes, and listened to the wheeze in Cas’ chest, and held him close.

Amalia Bakas was born Mazaltov Matsa in 1897 in present-day Ioannina, Greece (then Janina, Turkey). She was part of a 2,000 year old community of Romaniote Jews from Ioannina. Since the holocaust, their population there has dwindled to only dozens of individuals. Amalia was apparently the only Romaniote Jew to have ever recorded, albeit in the New World.
A beautifully researched biographical essay by David Soffa appears in the notes of the CD that he produced of her, Amalia!: Old Greek Songs in the New Land, 1923-50 (Arhoolie, 2002). Despite my best efforts to add to his work, I have largely failed to improve upon it. What follows is drawn almost entirely from his research.
She was sent to the U.S. at 15 years old in 1912 and just under a year later, she was married to Jack Saretta with whom she had two daughters Esther and Diamond (b. July 23, 1918). They lived in the Jewish Lower East Side, close to the Romaniote synagogue on Broome Street (the only one in the Western hemisphere). Mally, as she was known to her friends and family, worked initially in a garment factory, but by her early 20s she was earning a living singing in the emerging coffee houses and nightclubs patronized by Greek and Turkish speaking immigrants.
By about 1922, she had started recording under the names Amilia or Amelia, initially ten sides for the small independent labels for the New York Armenian-owned Parsekian and Sohag labels and then six sides for the Chicago-based Greek Record Company. Her career as a performer was far removed from the traditional role of a woman in her community, and her husband divorced her and sent her daughter Esther away to Greece. Diamond later used the word “kidnapped” to describe her sister’s removal. Diamond and Amalia remained very close, often working together in nightclubs and touring as a duo. In her younger years, Diamond’s babysitter was an emerging star of Greek music in New York, Marika Papagika. (Amalia had a short-lived cafe of her own on 8th Avenue around 1930, just around the corner of Papagika’s club.)
It is not out of the question that it was Papagika who brought Amalia to Victor Records, where she recorded 10 12” discs between April 1927 and February 1928. By that time, Amalia had converted to the Greek Orthodox Church to marry Gus Bakas (b. 1889; arrived in the U.S. 1910) and had taken his surname. In early 1929, she made three more 12” discs, this time for the Okeh company, accompanied by the brilliant violinist Nishan Sedefjian (with whom she worked off and on for decades) and cymbalom player Louis Rassias.
Amalia and Diamond spent the Depression playing the “oriental” nightclubs of 8th Avenue and touring - Detroit, Gary IN, Philadelphia, the Catskills, and Chicago - often with the guitarist, singer, and composer George Katsaros. An exceptionally independent woman, Amalia lived the nightlife, gambling and swearing with the men and performing flirtatiously. By 1940, she was living in Chicago’s Greektown, but within a couple of years, she moved back to New York and started recording again for the Balkan/ Metropolitan circle of labels for whom she made at least seven discs with a rotating cast of accompanists. She and Diamond performed as a mother-daughter act until 1960 when Diamond moved to Tarpon Springs, Florida where she opened a restaurant. Amalia retired from performing in the early 1960s and joined Diamond in Florida in 1974. She died there in 1979. Diamond died March 13, 2013.
======= Sarah Behar recorded only two songs - one disc - some time in the 1940s. At least three different women by that name, all born in Turkey between 1899 and 1910, appear in the 1930 and 1940 census records in the Bronx and Brooklyn. Two of the three were native speakers of Ladino, the uncommon dialect of Spanish specific to Sephardic Jews of parts of Turkey and Greece. (The language was brought to the Ottoman Empire during the late 15th expulsion of Jews from Spain.) For the time being, we remain unclear who she was.
======= In the 1940s Victoria Hazan recorded eleven songs in Turkish (plus one as a backing vocalist for Marko Melkon), two in Greek, and ten in Ladino. The Ladino language discs remain relatively scarce but fortunately can be heard on YouTube and were issued on a CD of her complete works titled Todas Mis Esperansas (Global Village, 2001). The thumbnail biography of Hazan at the sephardicmusic.org remains the best published source, although we hope to expand on it in the near future.
She was born April 15, 1896 in Salihi, Turkey. Her family (two siblings and her parents Moshe and Rivka Ninio) moved 100km due east to the port city of Izmir when she was 15 and then to New York City in 1920, shortly before the September 1922 catastrophe killed tens of thousands of Greeks and Armenians. From about 1925 to ’36, she was married to Israel Hazan. She sang and played out in her synagogue in the Bronx. When it was initially suggested that she should make records, she saw no reason to, saying that her husband “made a good living.” After her first husband’s death, she remarried Joe Rosa, and with his permission, she recorded for the Kaliphon and Metropolitan labels with Marko Melkon (who was just a year or two older than her and from Izmir himself) and his circle accompanying her.
She continued to sing within her community until her death in Brooklyn, November 21, 1995. She’s buried near family in Cincinnati, Ohio.

10 To Watch : Mayors Edition 41519
RICK HORROW’S TOP 10 SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 15 : MAYORS EDITION with Jacob Aere
Tigers’ Masters victory: other winners and losers. Let’s start with the biggest winner: CBS. According to a release from CBS Sports, Saturday’s Masters coverage was the highest-rated Saturday golf telecast on any network since 2015. It also featured a 5% increase in ratings over last year. Given the Tiger Effect, Sunday’s final ratings will blow the doors off those increases. Other major stakeholders benefitting from Tiger’s victory are Nike, which stuck by him during the troubled years, the PGA and the state of New York, looking ahead to the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black May 16-19, the golf industry as a whole, and fans. But even on this happy sports day, there are losers. The NBA and NHL had to air playoff games across from a Masters final round held early due to weather. Ditto the U.S. women’s hockey team, which defeated Finland to win their fifth consecutive women’s hockey world championship gold medal but likely had few casual fans watching back home. At Bethpage and elsewhere Tiger tees it up, the rest of the field will see its screen time vanish as TigerTV – every hole, every shot – blasts back. The biggest losers? The pocketbooks of 2020 Masters patrons. Secondary market badges averaged $2,500 per day this year. Next year, look for that marker to move north of $3,000.
Heads up! This year, Minor League Baseball fans might notice new digital screens and displays at their favorite stadiums. Together with ISM Connect, over 25 MiLB teams will be adding new smart displays to their ballparks. But beyond delivering unique stories and creative ads to fans during each game, these displays are also equipped with smart cameras to measure audience engagement. These smart cameras will help keep ads and content fresh. The cameras record anonymous interactions -- how long someone watches the screen or their age range -- not individual images of specific people. By measuring foot traffic and engagement, MiLB teams and ad sponsors can better understand who their fans are, what resonates with them, and how they’re experiencing each game. The result is a better, more engaging experience for fans, and a better way for teams and partners to learn how to best serve their loyal audience.
Stanley Cup Playoff storylines intrigue as the NHL enters its second week of the post season. Here are a few big picture scenarios for 2019. First, the Tampa Bay Lightning are in the conversation for best regular season team ever. The Lightning won 62 games, something only one other team has done -- the Detroit Red Wings in 1995-1996. However, of the 13 teams that have finished with the NHL's best record since the 2004-2005 lockout, only two -- the 2007-2008 Red Wings and the 2012-2013 Chicago Blackhawks — have gone on to lift the Stanley Cup. Second, the Stanley Cup hasn't been won by a Canadian team since Montreal took it home 26 years ago. However, three Canadian squads are in this year's mix — the Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, and Winnipeg Jets — and Calgary has the second-best odds of capturing the title, per The Action Network. Finally, in his first full season as NHL owner, Tom Dundon helped the Carolina Hurricanes make the playoffs for the first time since 2009. In Raleigh, Dundon is a hero. Elsewhere, he's more of a villain, as he pulled the plug on the Alliance of American Football's inaugural season less than seven weeks after investing $250 million to rescue the league.
Congressmen threaten MLB antitrust exemption over RSN bid. U.S. Representatives Elijah Cummings and Raja Krishnamoorthi threatened MLB’s antitrust exemption over the league’s attempt to buy the 21 Fox-branded RSNs. In a letter sent to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, the two House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform members wrote that they are concerned about the potential for “anticompetitive conduct that harms American consumers” if MLB buys the RSNs. “MLB’s potential purchase of these RSNs raises significant questions about the antitrust exemption that professional baseball has enjoyed for nearly a century,” they wrote. “Although the Supreme Court has upheld baseball’s unique, judicially-created antitrust exemption for nearly a century on the basis of stare decisis, the Court has also described the exemption as an ‘aberration’ and recognized Congress’ ability to limit or even eliminate it.” The congressmen gave MLB only two weeks to produce documents relating to MLB’s potential acquisition and operation of the RSNs.
The Trump administration has nixed Major League Baseball's historic agreement with the Cuban Baseball Federation (CBF) that would have made it easier for Cuban players to enter the U.S. legally without needing to defect. According to Axios Sports, the goal of this deal was to help end the dangerous trafficking of Cuban players that has gone on for decades, resulting in players being threatened, extorted or even kidnapped. Take Yasiel Puig, now an outfielder with the Cincinnati Reds. After helping Puig escape Cuba, traffickers affiliated with a notorious Mexican drug cartel held him for ransom on a small island for weeks. The Cuban agreement is similar to the deals MLB has with China, Korean, and Japan, and dates back to the Obama administration’s détente with Cuba, which intended to soften relations between the two nations. However, the Trump White House last Monday argued that the CBF is a branch of the Cuban government and that the agreement, therefore, violates U.S. trade law since MLB would be paying a fee in exchange for each player. A geopolitical war is being waged — and young baseball players with dreams of a better life are the collateral damage.
The Boston Marathon passes $200 million in economic impact, and welcomes seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson to its field. This year's Boston Marathon, held Monday April 15 and carried on NBCSports Network, will be the 123rd running of the race that winds its way 26.2 miles from the town of Hopkinton to the finish line at Copley Square. It is the world's oldest annual marathon, starting in 1897 after the successful debut of the marathon at the first modern Olympics in 1896. The Boston Marathon is traditionally held on Patriots Day, the third Monday in April. The Boston Red Sox also have a traditional home game on Patriots Day with an 11:05 a.m. first pitch against the Orioles this year. Boston is among the six largest marathons, along with Tokyo, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City. A special prize purse is given to runners who accumulate the most points in the majors. Here's a bit of trivia: Just five national sporting events were held during the two World Wars, and the Boston Marathon was one. The others? NASCAR has reportedly rejected an offer from Monster Energy to extend its title sponsorship of the US stock car racing series in order to push ahead with a new tiered partnership model. According to SportsBusiness Journal, the energy drink brand offered to extend its deal for an additional year to give NASCAR more time to finalize its sponsorship restructure. However, NASCAR has apparently turned down that option to keep moving forward with the new model, with Monster now in talks about becoming a lower-level partner. NASCAR’s switch to a tiered sponsorship model has been rumored for some time, and the series is reportedly asking for close to $20 million per year for top-tier deals. SportsBusiness Journal added that Monster would likely land a second-tier sponsorship deal, although it is not yet clear how much NASCAR wants for those slots. Monster was first named NASCAR title sponsor in 2017 as part of a two-year deal estimated to be worth an annual $20 million. The company then extended the partnership for a further season last April. The new arrangement would see NASCAR’s premier series be known as the NASCAR Cup Series, rather than the title-sponsored Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.
Your Call Football looks to change the future of the game through tech. According to ESPN, YCF is part football, part gaming, part fantasy and allows fans to decide how an actual in-progress game is played, as if Madden came to life. Every Monday night for four weeks in the spring, fans get a notification at 8 p.m. to open the YCF app. They are given a coach-selected "bundle" of three plays to choose from and each fan has 10 seconds to decide what the team's offense should do next on their app. The game is free to play, there are cash prizes, and fans are awarded points when they select what the coach wanted and when their play selection is successful. On the other hand, fans who don't pick with the majority are awarded points when the majority-chosen play results in a negative play, like a sack or an incompletion. At the end of the 10 seconds, the play is radioed into the huddle with the whole sequence taking just 19 seconds, no longer than a normal football game. For a generation of hyper-connectivity, YCF wants to bring the digital world into live sports and give millennials who have stopped paying attention a reason to actually care.
AT&T becomes the first non-apparel company with logo on WNBA jerseys. AT&T will become the first non-apparel partner to have its logo featured on all WNBA jerseys as part of a new deal, with the tech company and the league also planning to collaborate on programs that support women in sports. According to Hashtag Sports, the jerseys debuted during last week’s WNBA Draft held at Nike’s new NYHQ. “Whether it’s women in sports, supporting small businesses like those owned by WNBA players, being a leading voice in LGBTQ rights, or giving back to communities in which we operate, we have much in common and many opportunities to empower these incredible athletes and their fans,” said Fiona Carter, AT&T’s chief brand officer. Sports sponsorship deals can be important gateways to philanthropy. With this latest move, AT&T is demonstrating that giving back is as important to the telecom company as selling mobile phones and service plans.
April is National Autism Awareness Month, and the MLF Bass Pro Tour roster is participating in the way they know best: by catching fish. Most of the field of 80 anglers competing in the next two Bass Pro Tour events are pledging “dollars per pound” donations to their favorite autism awareness organization, and they’re asking their fans to consider doing the same. “Autism affects so many families, we’re just doing our best to encourage people to do whatever they can for their local autism awareness organization,” said Kevin VanDam, who is pledging a robust $5 for every pound of fish he records on SCORETRACKER. MLF anglers participating in April’s awareness and fundraising effort will combine their weights and contributions from the Stage Four event on Lake Chickamauga in Tennessee, and the Stage Five event on Smith Lake in Alabama. With big weights of Florida-strain largemouth expected on Chickamauga and even heavier overall weights of spotted bass on Smith Lake, those dollars-per-pound pledge could add up quickly. The angler with the most weight at these two tournaments will be recognized as the Autism Awareness Champion.

The Irish Cocktail - A Plural Pour
Tumblr media
Irish There Weren't So Many Irish Cocktails
If only because they're all so different. Its not like collecting lasagna recipes where your grandma's secret formula is preferred over your aunt's, but at the end of the day they're pretty similar and they both taste like lasagna.
These six Irish Cocktail recipes (and counting) have very different flavor profiles from one another. Guess that just makes choosing what Saint Patrick's Day themed drinks to serve at your party (or Irish Wake, see below) that much more fun.
While No. 2 on our list took off briefly from day one before becoming obscure, No. 3 has stood the test of time. You'll have to be the judge though. While further research is likely to turn up a few more, the Irish Cocktail drink recipes found so far are listed below in chronological order.
Behind Your Bar - Several Ways To Make The Irish Cocktail
The Original
Irish Cocktail Recipe No. 1:
1 lump ice
2 drops Schroeder's or Boker's bitters
½ naggin Irish whiskey
1 bottle C. & C. ginger ale
Shown above as first published in 1895, you're going to need a really large glass to make this into one drink.* A naggin is a 200ml (6 ¾ oz) bottle of spirits about the size of a large hip flask in Ireland and the imported bottle of Cantrell & Cochrane ginger ale was probably around 9-10 oz or larger back then.
Said to be a very palatable drink and a favorite of the Irish members of Parliament, you may want to cut this recipe in half. Similar drinks include the Horse's Neck cocktail and the New England highball.
Popular At First
Irish Cocktail Recipe No. 2:
½ jigger Irish whiskey
½ jigger Italian vermouth
3 dashes orange bitters
2 dashes Horsford's acid phosphate
Stir well in a mixing glass half full with fine ice. Strain into a cocktail glass and serve.
Apparently this 1898 formulation† was fairly well received judging by the number of cocktail books it was initially reprinted in before fading into relative obscurity today.‡,1,2
That may have been due to the acid phosphate as an ingredient which is a cheaper, less perishable souring agent than lemon or lime juice whose use fell out of favor and disappeared from the market when bottled soft drinks replaced soda fountains. It has since been resurrected and is being used in high end bars around the globe. Maybe your own home bar should be included among them.
Similar drinks include the Affinity, Brown University and Rory O'More.
Still Serving
Irish Cocktail Recipe No. 3:
1 wineglass (2 oz) Irish whiskey
2 - 3 dashes absinthe
2 dashes Boker's bitters
1 dash curacao
1 dash maraschino
Add all the ingredients to mixing glass filled with shaved ice. Stir well with a bar spoon and strain into a chilled glass putting in a medium sized olive along with squeezing a piece of lemon peel on top.
Outside of a few die-hard aficionados and historians who know otherwise, this classic 1900 concoction is essentially the sole surviving Irish Cocktail drink recipe left today.3 Harry Craddick, Trader Vic and many others substituted Angostura for Boker's, some call for Pernod instead of absinthe, and Crosby Gaige renamed it Erin Go Bragh, but its essentially the same as it ever was.
Other similarly garnished Ireland themed drinks include Everybody's Irish and the Shamrock.
All The Rest
Irish Cocktail Recipe No. 4:
1 jigger Irish whiskey
3 dashes Angostura bitters
2 dashes gum syrup
Mix together with fine ice, strain, and garnish with a piece of twisted lemon peel.3
Irish Cocktail Recipe No. 5:
1 gill (5 oz) creme de menthe
3 dashes gum syrup
3 dashes Peychaud's bitters
2 dashes absinthe
Stir well with three or four lumps of ice and strain into a cocktail glass.4
Irish Cocktail Recipe No. 6:
½ wineglass Irish whiskey
½ wineglass vermouth
1 spoonful sugar
2 dashes lemon juice
2 dashes bitters
1 dash creme de menthe (for green color)
Transcribed verbatim. You'll have to determine the specifics.5
Other drinks that start with ‘i.’

5 Things to Avoid and 6 Foods to Eat to Help Prevent Alzheimer’s
Wondering how to prevent Alzheimer’s disease and keep your brain healthy? Science is showing that diet and lifestyle changes CAN protect against cognitive decline. Learn what threatens your brain health and specific foods for brain health that you can start eating now.
By Neal Barnard, MD • A version of this article was originally published in Naked Food Magazine
Alzheimer’s disease is the fastest growing health threat in the United States, according to a 2013 landmark report from researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle.
How to Prevent Alzheimer’s and Fight Memory Loss with Diet and Lifestyle Changes
The latest scientific findings show that diet and lifestyle changes can create a barrier against cognitive decline.
Researchers from the Chicago Health and Aging Project analyzed the diets of thousands of people over many years. The findings are groundbreaking.
Saturated “bad” fat — found in milk, cheese, and meat — is strongly linked to the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, increasing risk more than threefold. Trans fats increase risk fivefold. Avoiding these fats can cut risk dramatically.
Foods rich in vitamin E, such as broccoli, walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds, also reduced dementia risk by as much as 70%.
Other studies show that foods overly rich in iron or copper can promote cognitive loss.
And also that folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 may help protect the memory.
iStock.com/kerdkanno
This brain-healthy diet is almost identical to the diet that helps prevent stroke, heart disease, obesity, and other chronic diseases: a low-fat diet of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes.
Combining this with physical and mental exercise and avoiding harmful toxins, such as aluminum in supplements or cookware, can maximize protection for the brain.
5 Things That Threaten Your Brain Health
Saturated fats found in meats, dairy products, and eggs appear to encourage the production of beta-amyloid plaques within the brain. The Chicago Health and Aging Study reported in the Archives of Neurology in 2003 that people consuming the most saturated fat had more than triple the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, compared with people who generally avoided these foods.
Aluminum has been found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, so it pays to err on the side of caution. Avoid uncoated aluminum cookware and read labels when buying baking powder, antacids, and processed foods.
Excess copper impairs cognition — even in mid-adulthood — and ends up in the plaques of Alzheimer’s disease. It comes from copper pipes and nutritional supplements.
Excess iron can build up in the brain, sparking the production of damaging free radicals. Sources of excess iron include cast-iron cookware, meats, and iron supplements.
Trans fats, found in doughnuts and snack pastries, have been shown to increase Alzheimer’s risk more than fivefold. These “bad fats” raise cholesterol levels and apparently increase production of the beta-amyloid protein that collects in plaques in the brain as Alzheimer’s disease begins.

Vitamin B12 is essential for healthy nerves and brain cells. While many people have trouble absorbing vitamin B12 from foods, B12 in supplements is highly absorbable. Together, folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 eliminate homocysteine, which can build up in the bloodstream — rather like factory waste — and damage the brain.
Blueberries and grapes get their deep colors from anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants shown to improve learning and recall in studies at the University of Cincinnati.
Beans and chickpeas have vitamin B6 and folate, as well as protein and calcium, with no saturated fat or trans fat.
Sweet potatoes are the dietary staple of Okinawans, the longest-lived people on Earth, who are also known for maintaining mental clarity into old age. Sweet potatoes are extremely rich in beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant.
Nuts and seeds are rich in vitamin E, which has been shown to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Especially good sources are almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, pine nuts, pecans, pistachios, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, and flaxseed. Just 1 ounce — a small handful — each day is plenty.
Green leafy vegetables provide iron in a form that is more absorbable when the body needs more and less absorbable when you already have plenty, protecting you from iron overload which can harm the brain. Green vegetables are also loaded with folate, an important, brain-protecting B-vitamin. (Editor’s note: For more about the best way to get the iron you need, including eating leafy greens, read our article here.)

Car insurance question. UK only please?
Me and my husband went bankrupt in NOV 2010 (long story) and basically, the things like car insurance and cable and internet and energy companies were fine as there were no credit checks as we were already with them. So firstly, I wonder if the bankruptcy may have affected this new quote? And also, if we try and move to another company, will our bad credit caused by the bankruptcy and home repossession make companies refuse us? Where can I find affordable health insurance?
Where can I find affordable health insurance without a deductible that makes it pointless to have insurance? We live in Nampa Idaho. We are on a tight budget but I can probably make room for a couple hundred dollars. I would need family coverage for myself, husband and 2 year old daughter. I have tried looking around online and all of the insurance plans are about $400+ a month and still have a deductible of $2500+ per person. I have looked into welfare and their income limit is $317 a month, and they have no options for paying a monthly premium for people that can't afford the other plans. I just wanted to see if anybody had any recommendations for something that might be a little affordable. We have chronic health conditions so we do tend to use a lot of medical services.""

Auto Insurance - what went wrong here?
Where did I go wrong? A few months back, I backed out of a parking place and stopped, waiting for traffic behind me to resolve itself. While stopped, a large vehicle backed into my driver side door. We both re-parked. The other driver first tried to convince me there was no damage and we should both forget it but after I showed him the damage to my door (his car had almost no damage), we exchanged insurance and personal contact information in a friendly conversation. I reported the damage to my insurance carrier, a large national firm, obtained the required 2 estimates for repair and submitted it, as directed by my carrier and his, to his carrier, a large regional carrier. They informed me he had decided my car was not stopped and so I bore responsibility for his backing his car into me (!), and they therefore were refusing to pay me. My insurance carrier said it was up to me to provide proof my car wasn't moving, regardless of the fact his car backed into mine! I approached the repair firm, and they provided me with photos and offered testimony to state that my car was obviously stopped, based on the damage to the door. I called the individual and said with this information unless he paid the bill in full, I would take him to small claims court. He argued but produced a check for the full amount. A month later, my insurance carrier raised my rate based on this incident and a highway speeding ticket over a year ago. I ended up paying more for my insurance and lost a great deal of time despite both of us being insured. Where did I go wrong?""

Insurance Help Please?
I got a letter today saying that my health insurance is about to be canceled. I have been on my mom's insurance forever. She is disabled and can not work so it was a state funded program. (Tenncare) I am too old to stay under hers anymore so I applied myself. Here are my qualifications . I am 19 and a full time college student. I have a part time job and make about 500-600 a month. My total monthly bills are about 450 (not counting gas and food). I am having to depend on my family to even survive right now. I don't understand why I was denied health insurance when I basically make negative money a month? I am really worried because I just found out I have PCOS with a large cyst on my right ovary and I may have to have surgery soon. I am going to the doctor at least once a month to track the growth of the cyst. I honestly can not afford my own health insurance. Is there anything I can do? Also the place I work does not offer health insurance. Thanks in advance.

Or can I get my own motorcycle insurance through another insurance agency for just motorcycles, but stay under my dad's umbrella policy for my car (without him knowing)? (2) Are there penalties or negative repercussions if I register it, but just store it (never drive it) and do not buy insurance OR license plates for it within a certain number of days? Any and all suggestions that might help me are much appreciated. The end goal is to be able to drive my motorcycle starting in the Spring of 2014, insure and license it myself, stay under my dad's policy for my car, and all while he does not find out about it in any way. How is my motorcycle insurance so CHEAP?
Okay so im looking into buying a motorcycle this summer. Ill be turning 18, and have always wanted a bike. So i was looking at how much insurance would cost me for it because i hear that its expensive and im a full time student and work minimum wage job, so its not like i have money just to shoot out my *** for fun. I was looking at progressive, because they show instant online quotes so i dont have to actually call in and give my real name and social security # and stuff like that. So i go onto progressive's, and enter all my real info like age and stuff(but lie about my actual address and name and email cause i dont want constant ads and spam). And i got cheaper than expected quotes.....So i put in, 2009 Kawasaki Ninja 250r. Male. Turning 18 in july. Put in that i have motorcycle endorsement and taken safety course(i havent yet, but i will by the time i actually own a bike and have to buy insurance for real). No accidents or tickets. 0 years riding experience(although i ran multiple quotes and noticed price drops by $29 for a 12month policy if youve had even 1 year of riding experience, which is nice). And i got a quote for $285 12month policy. For Bodily Injury & Property Damage 50/100/25. Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury 25/50. $100 deductible on comprehensive for bike(again i ran multiple quotes, and changing the deductible amount on comprehensive only saves a few bucks). $500 deductible for collision(this deductible amount changes your rate incredibly). No other coverage. Got quoted $285...seems kinda cheap to me considering im so young? Not complaining that i save money....just wondering if this sounds normal? Random insurance question, lets say im riding my bike and going at a good speed, say 45+mph. Then fall and completely eat ****. I injure and damage only myself and my bike. Lets say my bike needs some repairs or maybe even replacing, and my leg is broken or something like that. Will any insurance cover any costs since it was my fault to my own personal injury? Is this when health insurance kicks in for medical bills? And would motorcycle insurance pay for any of this? If so, which kind? Like comprehensive, collision, liability, under-insured motorist? Because i have no idea. This next part might be a little hard to understand, so ill try my best. But i ran multiple quotes and changed the age i said i was, for instance, i put in my real birthday on one July 1996, than i put July 1995 on another just to see how much the rate goes for a 18yr old, because once i actually get the bike i will be 18. The quote where i put my real birthday and said i was 17, got quoted $285, the quote where i said i was already 18, got quoted $319.....how is that possible that i get a $34 cheaper quote for being younger??? I feel like someone at progressive online site is trolling me and getting my hopes up now, just to see me go ape **** when i actually go get a real quote. Thanks!""

Potential Crew relocation to Austin prompts San Antonio to send threatening letter to MLS
A judge wants clarification on the MLS expansion process after citing potential conflicts of interest.
San Antonio is bidding for an MLS expansion team, and the people involved with its bid are not happy about the news that Columbus Crew SC owner Anthony Precourt is planning to move his team to Austin. The San Antonio bid feels it was misled by MLS, is seeking clarification on the status of its bid from the league, and is apparently looking into whether or not it has any legal recourse.
On Friday, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff sent a letter to MLS commissioner Don Garber asking him to clarify the timeline of events that led to Precourt’s pursuit of a move to Austin. Here is Wolff’s letter in full, via KENS 5 San Antonio.
The letter says that Precourt’s presence on the MLS expansion committee “presents a clear conflict of interest” if San Antonio’s information about the timeline of Precourt’s interest in a move to Austin is correct.
San Antonio says it is their understanding that Precourt “obtained a legal right to relocate the Columbus Crew to Austin when he purchased the franchise in 2013,” though the San Antonio bid was unaware of any plans for him to do so. When San Antonio met with MLS president Mark Abbott in 2015, they made it clear they would only pursue the bid “if there was a clear path” to getting an MLS team, and Abbott indicated that the league would not place teams in both San Antonio and Austin while encouraging the San Antonio group to bid.
After meeting with MLS, the the city of San Antonio and Bexar County moved to purchase Toyota Field, a soccer-specific stadium that currently seats 8,296 people, but is designed to be easily expandable. The San Antonio bid says that the local governments would not have spent the $18 million they did on purchasing the stadium if they were informed that Precourt was considering moving the Crew to Austin.
“I would appreciate a prompt response to these concerns,” Judge Nelson writes in the conclusion of his letter, before getting into the threatening stuff. “In the meantime, I have asked the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney to thoroughly investigate the matter and report his findings to the Bexar County Commissioners Court.”
Did MLS mislead San Antonio?
This is going to be hard to prove. According to the Columbus Dispatch, Precourt’s purchase agreement for the Crew included a promise to keep the team in Columbus for 10 years, but with one out — Austin. If that is indeed in the terms of Precourt’s purchase agreement, MLS certainly knew about it. However, that doesn’t mean the league believed that Precourt intended to pursue relocation in November 2015, when Abbott encouraged San Antonio to bid for an expansion team.
In October 2016, the Crew hired a consulting firm to put together a report evaluating the demand for a new stadium in Columbus. Previously, the team had asked for state funds to update Mapfre Stadium, which it was not granted. These are indications that Precourt was looking for ways to make the Crew financially viable in Columbus.
Expansion bids were due by February of this year, and the two names that MLS trademarked for potential Austin teams were registered in August of this year. MLS and Precourt are likely to argue that — both in November 2015 and February 2017 — MLS and the Crew wanted to keep the team in Columbus, and were not yet seriously pursuing relocation options.
However, if the Dispatch’s report about Precourt’s purchase agreement is accurate, the league was aware of his interest in Austin in 2013 and neglected to inform the San Antonio bid. MLS might have believed the possibility of the Crew’s relocation to be an extremely remote one, but they still should have told San Antonio about Precourt’s option to move the team.
Why is Precourt on the expansion committee?
It’s curious that Precourt has any influence over the placement of expansion teams. Bexar County might not find evidence of wrongdoing on the part of MLS, but that won’t make the league’s decision to put Precourt on the expansion committee any better.
Precourt is one of five owners that will decide the fate of the bids for MLS expansion. One of the bids, San Antonio, is competition for the new franchise he wishes to establish in Austin. Another bid, Cincinnati, has likely drawn the eyeballs and dollars of casual Crew supporters away from Columbus and closer to their own city. The other four members of the committee — Jonathan Kraft of the New England Revolution, Andrew Hauptman of the Chicago Fire, Phil Rawlins of Orlando City, and Jay Sugarman of the Philadelphia Union — would not have their teams affected in any way by any of the expansion candidates.
Even if Precourt has made no attempt to negatively influence the expansion chances of either San Antonio or Cincinnati, and has acted in a completely objective and ethical fashion throughout the process, it’s clear that he shouldn’t have been on the committee in the first place. San Antonio’s concerns about a potential conflict of interest are valid.
MLS had not yet responded to a request for comment at the time of publishing. If SB Nation receives a response, this post will be updated.

30 Major League Baseball team names, ranked objectively (from worst to best) by a qualified expert
The Los Angeles Angels: Or, if you happen to speak any Spanish at all: "The The Angels Angels". Good thing nobody in LA speaks any Spanish at all! This is just... this is a turd of a name.
The Philadelphia Phillies: Did the Phillies not know they were supposed to come up with a team name until they got to school the day it was due? Was it because they skipped class the day it was assigned to go smoke a J in their Datsun in the parking lot?
The Arizona Diamondbacks: Hey, you know what baseball needs? A team whose fans call them a name that is aurally indistinguishable from the most irritating thing stupid people call other stupid people.
The Cleveland Indians: Politics aside, I'm not sure naming your team after just a group of regular people is a particularly inspired choice. The Indians apparently earned their nickname when they had a Native American guy on their team, which is like if the Dodgers had renamed themselves the Los Angeles Asian Fellas when they signed Hideo Nomo. And then the name stuck for 120 years. Amazingly, their name before that was the Naps (after a player named Nap, and no I am not making that up), so this was actually, somehow, an improvement. As my lovely wife puts it: "these people are idiots".
The Chicago White Sox: I'm not a huge fan of naming your team after the clothes they wear in general, but white socks in particular is a spectacularly non-distinguishing feature. My dad wears white socks, too. He got them in a pack of 30 at a Sports Authority in 2003.
The Kansas City Royals: Anti-American! There, I said it.
The Atlanta Braves: Solidly only the second most racist name on this list. Nice.
The Oakland Athletics: Disarmingly wholesome, but also so literal it kind of misses the point of having a nickname in the first place.
The St. Louis Cardinals: Would you say that cardinals are from St. Louis? Because Wikipedia says, somewhat more conservatively, that cardinals are from "North and South America". It's fine. It's a fine name--listen, stop badgering me, I said it's fine.
The Colorado Rockies: I think this team maybe got named by somebody who had never actually been to Colorado.
The Tampa Bay Rays: Well, it's better than the Devil Rays.
The Minnesota Twins: OH, BECAUSE YOU PLAY IN THE TWIN CITIES? CUTE!
The Boston Red Sox: Hey, what's with the x in Sox anyway? What is the singular form of sox? Why do I give a shit what color your sox are? How has no one thought of a better name in 110 years?
The Washington Nationals: There's just nothing going on here. Pass.
The San Francisco Giants: Yes, fine, Giants, that seems fine. Personally I'm not sure this whole "base ball" thing is going to take off, anyway.
The Toronto Blue Jays: Thank you for going one tiny step further than "Blue Sox" (looking at you, Butler, Holyoke, Sydney, and Leicester)
The Cincinnati Reds: It's an OK name, but I'd like it better if they had game every once in a while where they dismantled the bourgeouis state apparatus or abolished religion or something
The Seattle Mariners: OK, yeah, it's a sea thing. Seattle is next to the sea! This is all hanging together nicely.
The Los Angeles Dodgers: started life as the New York Trolley-Dodgers, which I love. It's a name that makes no claims about its players other than a general wiliness that is probably offset by the (somewhat alarming) negligence required to keep getting in the paths of moving trolleys in the first place. But Los Angeles has no trolleys to dodge, and how are you going to dodge from inside a of a grid-locked car anyway? I give this name a B-.
The San Diego Padres: Has something to say about San Diego, shortens to the Dads which is among the silliest nickname in sports. Not terrible!
The Detroit Tigers: Sure, why not! Tigers are cool, I suppose.
The Baltimore Orioles: The best of the tiny-bird names, but why are so many teams named after tiny birds? This is a real question. Please email me with any pertinent information.
The New York Mets: conjures up visions of guys in cleats and pinstripes taking in the opera or discussing Proust between bites of caviar and champagne. I did a little research and it turns out that's exactly what the Mets do in their off-time.
The Miami Marlins: A marlin sounds like it could conceivably kill you, so this name is pretty much has it all.
The Milwaukee Brewers: The only two things I know about Milwaukee are that Hamm's is from there and Laverne and Shirley worked at a bottling plant (???). Those are both beer things, and Brewers is a beer thing, and you drink beer at baseball games, so we're firing on all cylinders now.
The New York Yankees: I hate to admit it, but this is a good name for a baseball team.
The Pittsburgh Pirates: Oh, shit, pirates are rad! Hell yes I would like to root for some pirates. We're talking, like, adventure book pirates here, right? Not the guys who murder people and put Eat Pray Love on the Internet before it's even out on DVD.
The Texas Rangers: Unique team name: ✔︎. specifically from the area they play for: ✔︎. Totally badass: ✔︎. Makes me think about Chuck Norris: Yeah, but I try not to hold that against them.
The Chicago Cubs: Chicago chose to name their team not after a ferocious predator, but after the baby version of a ferocious predator, and I think that's had a lot to do with why their fans' optimism is so durable. Every time the Cubs blow it in the post-season, you can almost hear David Attenborough say "well, there's always next year" while a baby grizzly slides off a log face-first into a stream or something, and how can you not be a fan of that?
The Houston Astros: were founded as an expansion team in 1962 as the Houston Colt .45s (the gun, not the beer, not that that's a hell of a lot better). In '65, they realized that: A) Houston is full of spaceship pilots and engineers; B) old-timey guns are stupid compared to spaceships; C) we're in the middle of the God Damned space race and we're gonna put a man on the moon and the commie bastards in the USSR can go to hell. That last reason isn't as compelling anymore, but spaceships are cool as hell and spaceship nerds who calculate delta-v and wear pocket protectors are cool as hell. Astros win.

What are the Dodgers and Astros hunting to do at the deadline?
New Post has been published on https://othersportsnews.com/what-are-the-dodgers-and-astros-hunting-to-do-at-the-deadline/
What are the Dodgers and Astros hunting to do at the deadline?
Andrew Friedman’s close friends in the sector and executives who’ve dealt with the Los Angeles Dodgers‘ president of baseball functions by the a long time can attest that he is no supporter of July transactions. Friedman prefers to form his roster in the tranquil of winter season, when trade conversations have time to marinate and deals aren’t pushed by emotion or an externally created “sense of urgency.” This is the way he rolls.
Final summer, when the Dodgers were being scrambling for a postseason berth, Friedman went outdoors his comfort and ease zone and traded pitching prospects Jharel Cotton, Frankie Montas and Grant Holmes to the Oakland Athletics for pitcher Prosperous Hill and outfielder Josh Reddick. The Dodgers went on to acquire the Nationwide League West, but it was the form of quick-phrase offer that Friedman studiously tried using to keep away from over a 10 years with the budget-mindful Tampa Bay Rays.
This summer, Friedman is running from a placement of energy. The Dodgers are taking part in .760 ball considering the fact that April 24, and they direct the West by 11 games over the Colorado Rockies. They can nap and drink lattes by the July 31 non-waiver deadline and however be assured house-field gain all through the NL playoffs — and very perhaps the Environment Series.
“I assume all the function Andrew did was to set himself in a placement where by he didn’t require to be determined in July,” claimed an American League front-business office man. “They have a definitely deep workforce, so they don’t automatically require much more depth. They require effect.”
With a massive direct in the NL West, the Dodgers don’t have quite a few holes to fill in their lineup. Chris Williams/Icon Sportswire
Jeff Luhnow, Friedman’s counterpart with the Houston Astros, is in the same way at liberty to do what he prefers fairly than what others count on him to do. The Astros are sixty three-32 and 15½ games up on Seattle in the American League West. Even the decline of shortstop and MVP applicant Carlos Correa for six to 8 weeks to a torn thumb ligament will never discourage their joyride to a division title.
Luhnow, who retains a limited circle of advisers and likes absolutely nothing much more than beating Twitter with his trade bulletins, hasn’t shared quite a few hints about his deadline intentions. But he’s much more of a swashbuckler than his stathead popularity indicates, and he’s prepared to pounce if the option arises.
“Understanding what I know about Jeff, there are some critical aggressive machinations to find that starter or bullpen person,” claimed an AL talent evaluator.
Now that the Washington Nationals, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Yankees have built significant deadline acquisitions, the attention is about to change to MLB’s twin juggernauts and their trade-deadline activity. Will the Dodgers make a press for Oakland A’s starter Sonny Grey, fortify the bullpen or include a right-handed outfield bat? And will the Astros include a pitcher to assist complement MLB’s most prolific offense?
Amid the deadline drama, the respective front places of work have two points in frequent: (1) They’re concentrating on postseason effect, offered that the playoffs are inevitable and (two) they both equally have the versatility to say no.
The Dodgers, in the midst of a 31-4 operate, have to ponder if they’re tempting fate by messing with a superior thing. But this a lot is apparent:
They have a respectable fascination in Baltimore reliever Zach Britton, and they assume he’s able of teaming with nearer Kenley Jansen to convey a 2014-15 Wade Davis–Greg Holland Kansas Town Royals dynamic to Chavez Ravine. But the Dodgers are skeptical that Orioles owner Peter Angelos will indication off on a trade for Britton, and they’re not sure if he’s prepared for the grind of substantial-leverage appearances immediately after missing two months with a forearm pressure. Britton has however to pitch consecutive times considering the fact that his return from the disabled listing July five.
The Dodgers have explained to probable trade associates they’re particularly hesitant to component with minimal league outfielder Alex Verdugo and pitchers Walker Buehler and Yadier Alvarez. It may be a arrive at to classify these 3 prospects as “untouchable,” but they’re the closest thing the Dodgers have to the hallowed floor occupied by Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger and Julio Urias in new a long time.
The Dodgers regard on their own as “opportunistic buyers” due to the fact the workforce has no evident weak point. They’re third in the Nationwide League in operates, direct the league in starter (three.09) and bullpen (two.ninety two) Period and rank second to Cincinnati in defensive operates saved, so they’re the definition of a very well-rounded club. Final year, manager Dave Roberts‘ lineup was susceptible versus remaining-handed pitching. This year, Justin Turner, Logan Forsythe and Chris Taylor have remedied that dilemma. The Dodgers rank 1st between NL clubs with 43 homers and an .818 OPS vs. lefties.
Although Friedman and his team are frequently churning thoughts and staying mild on their toes, they’ve however to come upon a proposal that has enticed them to acquire the plunge. An damage or sudden change in the market could change that, but it will never occur as a large shock if they chorus from a massive headline maker of a offer. Issues are a minimal much more complex in Houston, where by Luhnow has many pitching targets on his radar. But the mix of a slim market and Luhnow’s substantial specifications has clouded the photograph.
The Astros have sufficient depth and sufficient of a direct in the standings to stand up to the damage to Carlos Correa. Bob Levey/Getty Illustrations or photos
The Astros direct the American League in starter Period (three.87) and batting typical versus (.241), and they have a pair of All-Stars at the leading of the rotation. Dallas Keuchel showed that overpowering velocity is just not a prerequisite for October achievement versus the Yankees and Royals in the 2015 playoffs. Lance McCullers Jr. offers a pleasant distinction with his power things from the right aspect, and the Astros have the latitude to lessen his workload down the extend so that he can be new heading into October.
So who will come immediately after that? “My guess is, if they get a starter, it will be an individual who begins a playoff video game for them,” claimed an American League basic manager. The Astros considered former White Sox starter Jose Quintana in that mild, but the Cubs snatched him away with a deal of outfield prospect Eloy Jimenez and 3 other minimal leaguers. Most of the other starters that Luhnow covets are possibly unattainable or cost-prohibitive in conditions of the talent outlay needed.
Chris Archer is just not heading everywhere with Tampa Bay in the wild-card hunt. The Toronto Blue Jays would transfer Marco Estrada, Francisco Liriano and perhaps J.A. Happ, but Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez are off restrictions. The Detroit Tigers have built Justin Verlander out there, but prefer to hold on to Michael Fulmer.
For all the Julio Teheran speculation creating the rounds, the Atlanta Braves are inclined to retain him due to the fact they regard him as component of the team’s long-phrase potential. Teheran has been only so-so this year, regardless. Gerrit Cole would need a big prospect haul for Houston to make a offer with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are near sufficient to the wild card to dissuade them from getting sellers. And baseball would formally freak out if the Texas Rangers traded Yu Darvish or Cole Hamels to Houston to assist the Astros make a Environment Series operate.
If Luhnow cannot land a starter, manager A.J. Hinch has many inside selections. Possibly he goes with Mike Fiers, who’s five-two with a two.fifty Period considering the fact that Might 30. Or Charlie Morton, who has struck out 78 batters in 68⅔ innings. Or Collin McHugh, who returns to the rotation Saturday immediately after missing 3½ months with an elbow impingement.
The Cleveland Indians arrived at the Environment Series last year with a rotation so slim that Ryan Merritt arrived up from Triple-A to pitch versus Toronto in the choosing video game of the American League Championship Series. By that definition, Houston is just not in such dire straits.
The Astros in the end have to make a decision if Grey is sufficient of an improvement over their other starters to acquire a dive into the prospect bin.
“Do you give up [outfielder] Kyle Tucker or [pitcher] Francis Martes for a modest, marginal variance in that Video game three?” claimed a scout. “I don’t know. Do you give it up to get Britton? Possibly you do.”
Beneath a Approach B state of affairs, Luhnow has the solution of strengthening the back again conclusion. If he can include Britton or San Diego lefty Brad Hand to a bullpen blend that involves Ken Giles, Chris Devenski, Will Harris and Luke Gregerson, 5 innings may be a good deal. As the Royals and Indians have revealed in new a long time, all these off times in the program make it much easier for teams to cobble jointly twelve outs a video game in the postseason.
Houston’s offense presents the pitching personnel lots of margin for mistake. The Astros direct MLB with 557 operates and a .500 slugging percentage. They have struck out a majors-low 634 times and rank 10th between the 30 clubs in stolen bases, so they’re a diverse workforce than the strikeout-laden team that dropped to Kansas Town in the playoffs two a long time ago. That mix of power, contact and pace helps make it rough to imagine them staying shut down in October, regardless of the opposition.
“Operate-scoring is undoubtedly suppressed in the playoffs, but this workforce is heading to rating in the postseason,” a scout claimed. “I don’t assume they require lockdown pitching with an under-two.00 Period to acquire it.”
Like their fellow powerhouses in Los Angeles, the Astros have invested 4 months proving how superior they are. Over the up coming 10 times, they’re going to have to make a decision the selling price they’re inclined to spend to get much better.

28 black on white killings that occured in February
When it comes to interracial killings, the media, television shows, and Hollywood movies all have a certain narrative they push. But does it reflect reality?
Fusion, the English language sister channel of Univision, recently published a shocking article espousing hatred against white people. The Fusion article tells black people to fear and mistrust whites. It specifically claims that majority white areas are dangerous to blacks.
We decided to collect raw data on interracial killings involving whites and blacks. So far we have found 28 black on white killings that occurred in February of 2017. We have not found any white on black killings for the month of February yet. Many of the killings are random murders. The media tends to use euphemisms like “thrill killing,” or “attempted robbery,” or “wrong place at the wrong time” for these kinds of killings.
Please e-mail us about any other interracial killings involving whites and blacks in 2017. Please note that updates to this list will be made here.

Standing Rock Recap Part 1 (12/8-12/12)
So now that I am back in Cincinnati, and before I dive headlong back into my day-to-day business, I want to take an opportunity to reflect more thoroughly on my Standing Rock experience, to solidify it in my memory and begin to process the journey so that I can more fully integrate its lessons as I move forward. I kept some notes on my daily experiences so that I could write in greater depth later, so what I have not already journaled about in detail shall be expanded upon here. I’ve also included my posts from Facebook (in italics), as many of my more thoughtful reflections were shared there.
  8 December 2016
Today I picked up my car—a Kia Sorento full-size SUV, AWD—loaded it up, and double-checked my packing list. I packed in a prayerful manner, a bit apprehensive about the journey ahead but repeating my mantras all the while.
I went to Thursday night dance class at Baoku’s Village. It was quite a joyful send off! I didn’t know many of the other people there, but they all thanked me for going and assured me they would keep me in their thoughts. After class, I rested for a little while before hitting the road around midnight.
The roads were a bit snowy and icy to start out, but North of Indianapolis everything seemed to clear up nicely. The 10-hour drive wasn’t so bad, after all. I sang, prayed, chanted, listened to the radio, and played songs from my iPod. I took naps when I needed to and stretched often. I was nervous but excited for what might lie ahead.
  9 December 2016
Written about a short hike I took from a rest stop in Black River Valley, WI, which turned out to have a monument to one of the first sawmills in the country—undoubtedly erected in what had, up until then, been indigenous territory. “Mni Wiconi” and other phrases along those lines were scrawled onto the railings of the walkway that overlooked the valley.
 Good morning from Wisconsin!
What was promised as simply a "scenic overlook" turned out to be a half mile hike through the woods near a rest stop off Highway 94--and a much needed respite from the last 10hrs on the road.
I can still hear the trucks howling on the highway below, but up here I find peace in the beautiful morning sun. Also, there are reminders of the many who have journeyed before me. I send you my deepest gratitude, brothers and sisters.
Mni wiconi. This is my YES.
I arrived in Minneapolis around noon. I had an extravagant lunch at an Indian buffet before checking into my Air B&B for a nap. I went to the Dustin Thomas concert that night. The club was really neat—it had a small concert venue and a larger dance club area. I think someone said it was Prince’s club?
The show was phenomenal! He played many songs I love but don’t usually get to hear when he does short opening sets. I met several really friendly people—Adam and Eric, who are also musicians, Jeremy and Anthony, who had recently been to Standing Rock themselves, and a fiercely loving mother named Julia Chavira. There was another wild young woman with a drum, but her name escapes me now…
I hadn’t had a night out in quite a while, and I had taken an Uber to the show, so I decided to indulge in some tequila—three glasses, which was probably a bit overboard. But all my best road trips usually involve a good hangover at some point, so be it. I danced my ass off that night, and sang along to nearly every song. The show went until 2 AM or so, which was later than I planned to be out but oh-so-worth-it.
I chatted with Julia, Anthony, and Jeremy after the show and traded contact information with them so we could stay in touch. I left there absolutely astounded at the friendliness and generosity of the crowd gathered there that night. Minneapolis, you sure made a great first impression.
  10 December 2016
Post about a radio broadcast I heard on my way to MPLS:
This keeps nagging my conscience, so I will share:
On my way up to Minnesota, driving past Chicago around 3 a.m. I caught a broadcast by Thom Hartmann (amazing author too BTW, check out Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight). He was talking about our president elect and comparing his persona to that of Hitler and Mussolini. We probably have all heard that before, but he went into depth about the psychological tactics of a "leaders" such as them and it gave me a much deeper understanding of the validity behind those comparisons.
After his broadcast was over, I flipped to a Latino radio station (I like to practice my Spanish by seeing if I can figure out what the songs are about). They took a commercial break and this public service announcement came on. My Spanish isn't good enough to understand the finer details of the message, but it was something about people coming to your door and asking for your identification and your papers justifying your presence in this country, and under what circumstances someone can legally do that.
I felt a pang of fear in my heart. What a disturbing message to have to sit there and listen to! I realize this is a very real concern for America's international residents. They are truly fearing for their safety and freedom. This is not the America I was taught to love as a child. Shouldn't we all be concerned?
I ended up staying in Minneapolis an extra day. With warnings of a blizzard in Standing Rock, it didn’t seem wise to drive up there just yet. Plus, I didn’t have a room at the casino until the 11th. I spent the day running around, picking up a few last-minute supplies, including a package full of long underwear and other winter gear that I had ordered from REI but which hadn’t arrived by the time I departed (ironically enough, due to the weather in the same region I was headed to, which held up shipping). Dad had to overnight it to me, which actually worked out really well. I also went to the Mall of America, which is apparently one of the major attractions in MPLS but which I had intended to avoid. However, Jason requested specifically that I pick up Alpaca wool socks, and MOA had an Alpaca store. The rest is history…
I also worked very hard to track down tire chains for myself and Lolly B. They weren’t as easy to find as I had assumed, but with Jeremy’s help I did manage to find a couple of pairs the following day.
Anthony had offered me a place to stay that night, and I was originally going to take him up on it, but as evening rolled around I was having trouble getting in touch with him. He said he wouldn’t be off work until 10…I had been running around all day with a hangover and had honestly hoped to be in bed by that time. So, I booked an Air B&B last minute (which was kind of a miracle in and of itself) and went to someone else’s house to hole up in a quiet private room for the night. The guys were disappointed I didn’t come over to hang with them, but I knew I needed the rest.
  11 December 2016
I woke up to about 4 or 5 inches of snow this morning. No sense in rushing out the door until the snow plows have had a go at the streets, I told myself. I took my time to reorganize my belongings and then set to work cleaning off the Kia, by which time snowplows were crisscrossing through the residential area I was staying in. Perfect.
I hit the highway behind another brigade of snow plows. The pavement was coated, but my AWD seemed to be pretty reliable. I was surprised how much traffic was on the road early that Sunday morning. That’s the difference between 5 inches of snow in Cincinnati and 5 inches of snow in Minneapolis—people don’t freak out about it up North.
Someone named Rosemary from the Medic and Healer Council, which had previously been unresponsive to my inquiries, called me a few hours into my drive. I guess it was the email titled “ARRIVING TOMORROW 12/11” that finally got their attention. She informed me that she had forwarded me “some orientation materials to review.” She also cautioned me about the importance of cultural sensitivity, having a camp “buddy” especially for actions, and “checking in with myself frequently.” She advised me to stop somewhere with WiFi along the way so I could download said literature “because the internet at the Casino is crap.”
I found my tire chains along the way at a place called Mills Fleet Farm (thank God!), and another Indian buffet in Fargo called India Palace, just like the one I had eaten at a couple of days before in St Cloud. After filling up on Indian food, I headed next door to Caribou Coffee to download the orientation stuff. I was overwhelmed by the herbal remedy guides, camp guidelines, medic council guidelines, hypothermia and frostbite treatment, lists of recommended equipment, suggested readings, and most of all the lengthy pamphlet on crowd-control tactics. The latter file included detailed descriptions of devices like pepper spray, sound cannons, heat rays, various “nonlethal” projectiles, water cannons, etc. I skimmed that last pamphlet in horror and prayed I wouldn’t need the information during my time at camp.
It was dark and temps were dipping below zero as I neared my destination. I started down highway 1806, the main road to Standing Rock and the casino, and was met by signs that the highway was closed. A detour was indicated, but the alternate route was unlit and covered with snow, whereas 1806 still appeared to be clear and moderately trafficked. So I continued down 1806 to see if I could get through. I’d tell them I was heading to the casino, I reasoned to myself, even as I passed more signs and a partial blockade warning, again, that the road was closed.
Then I arrived at the road block. Cement barricades created a zig-zag passageway only the most nimble of vehicles could navigate. Floodlights shone harshly against an otherwise starlit night, illuminating a small booth where a young man dressed in army fatigues was stationed. A couple of law enforcement vehicles clogged what little remained of the throughway. I rolled down my window as I slowly approached the blockade. The young man strode toward me and greeted me. “Good evening, where are you headed?” He asked politely. “To the Prairie Knights Casino,” I replied. “To the casino,” he repeated, “I’ll be right back.” He walked to the booth and reached inside. I thought maybe he was requesting clearance for me to pass, but instead he came back with a small square of paper. “Turn around here, go back 21 miles, make a left on 138. Take that road 3 miles to 6 South. Follow that road for another 18 miles to 24. Make a left on 24 and that will put you right back on 1806.” I looked at the directions, and then at my GPS. He couldn’t be serious—but of course he was. I was only 30 minutes from the casino, there at the blockade. It was dark and cold and I just wanted to get off the road. “Highway 138?” I asked. “I saw the detour sign back there, but that road looked like it was covered in ice and snow.” “Yeah,” the guard replied, “It’s a gravel road. It’s only 3 miles. If you’re not comfortable with that route, you can go back up to Mandan and get on 6 South from there.” He was artificially polite and matter-of-fact about the whole situation. In the intimidating glare of the floodlights, I didn’t feel that I had much room for negotiation. “Okay, thanks.” With a sigh, I rolled up my window and turned my vehicle around.
The blockade really weirded me out. For a while, I felt nervous that I was being followed by one of the law enforcement SUVs, but I think it was just another vehicle behind me that had been turned around also. I wasn’t sure yet what the relations were like between water protectors and DAPL affiliates, but I could assume it wasn’t exactly genial.
As it turned out, I arrived at the casino lodge sometime around 9:45, which I had intuited I might. In light of that, the whole roadblock experience made sense. It was too late and too snowy to venture into camp, so I unloaded my car and settled into my room for the night.
I had been in contact with the One Nation camp via my friend Jason, and I had some cash for them from a fundraiser back in Massachusetts. I let them know that I had arrived, and they headed to the casino to meet me. Just after I’d gotten all my supplies arranged there in the hotel room, there was a knock at the door. I opened it and was greeted by 4 beautiful young men from different reservations around the Southwest. I invited them in and they all introduced themselves. We sat and talked for maybe a half an hour. I was a bit self-conscious, a white woman with 4 Native men in my room who were practically strangers. I tried remember what little cultural advice I’d read so far, but also wondered how relevant that was to this younger generation. The leader of the group E’sha did most of the speaking. They had been talking about leaving camp since the ACOE denied DAPL’s permit and some authorities on the Water Protector’s side (including chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe) were advising people to vacate camp. However, I guess the most recent council meeting had renewed their enthusiasm for staying and at that moment they sounded like they intended to be around for the winter.
Eventually, I felt much more at ease in their company. I remembered the money for E’sha, but wasn’t quite sure how to present it. At first I pulled out the whole wad of cash, but then thought better of it and gave it to him in the money belt I’d stashed it in instead. They thanked me and took their leave for the night. We talked about meeting up again sometime later at camp or the casino, but that night turned out the be the first and last time I saw them.
I had toyed with the idea of studying some of the literature I was assigned by the medic council, but by the time they left it was all I could do to climb into bed.
  12 December 2016
First day at camp. The roads were still snowy but definitely passable as I headed North on 1806 that morning. About 10 miles from the casino I started to see the tipis and flags off in the distance. Following E’sha’s instructions, I drove until I reached the south blockade on 1806 and turned right into the Oceti camp on the North bank of the Cannon Ball river. I asked the guard at the security booth where to find the medic tent, and he pointed me straight down Flag Road and assured me I’d see the sign on my left. Sure enough, I did.
I entered the tent and was greeted by a young woman with short blonde hair named Leah. I started to explain that I was there to volunteer and she began politely telling to me that they were no longer accepting volunteers and were in fact encouraging people to go home. “Oh,” I said, unshaken. “I spoke to Rosemary just yesterday on the phone and she didn’t say anything about not taking new volunteers. I supposed I can give her a call back and find out where the medic orientation is supposed to be.” “OH!” Leah exclaimed, “You’re here for medical? Well that’s a different story!” Still, there was no formal orientation at noon (as Rosemary has suggested the day before), but Leah, a PA, started to show me around the yurt. Next to the main “medical” (read: allopathic) yurt, there was a “wellness” (read: herbal medicine) yurt. Beside that was a tipi for mental health services. There was also a warming tent directly across from main medical where people could sleep or just hang out for a while to stay warm. It seemed brilliant to me, the way everything was arranged in one small hub. That way, we could conveniently make referrals to other services as necessary—which, of course, is how our larger medical system works in theory, although not so “conveniently” in practice. The small scale of this operation certainly appeared to help it function more efficiently.
After Leah showed me all she could think to show me, we asked around to try and find out if/when there would be a formal orientation. We finally came to the conclusion it would be around 5pm. It was only noon.
I decided to walk around and explore camp for a while. I was in awe of all the bright white and the snow-encrusted structures. But it was COLD, probably around 0 degree (Farenheit). The neck warmer I had pulled up around my mouth and nose to warm the air I was breathing became stiff with frost after about 15 or 20 minutes of me walking around camp. I could feel frost forming on my eyelashes where the steam of my breath had collected and frozen.
I returned to the medic tent to observe and orient a bit more. My instinct was to pitch in once I got a feel for the intake routine, but I was quickly warned by another physician not to touch a patient until I’d been oriented. So I hung back for a bit longer, but decided shortly thereafter to leave for a while, since it didn’t seem like I could be much help until I’d been formally oriented. Besides, I had plenty of orientation materials to review back at the casino. I told the rest of the team I’d be back around 5pm for the orientation, left them my number in case anything changed, then headed back to my car.
At the casino, I made myself lunch and started looking over the orientation materials. I also got in touch with Lolly B and invited her to my room to collect the money our friend Jason had sent and the tire chains I’d picked up for her. She showed up with a handsome man friend and they stayed and chatted for a while. She had started out on a road trip West, she explained to me, when she “heard about something going on in North Dakota.” She wound up staying for 4 months offering mental health services for the water protectors. She had been there through some of the most intense days of the entire movement. When I met her, she was on her way out. She wasn’t the first one to tell me they’d dropped everything else in their lives to be in service to this cause, and she wouldn’t be the last either. The power of this movement was finally sinking in for me. I was humbled and in awe at the reality of it, and would be struck with the same feelings again and again throughout my time there. I thanked her for her service and wished her well on her return home.
The rest of the evening was fairly uneventful. I got my orientation around 5pm, as planned. It was really pretty informal. A young wilderness medic named Harrison talked to us about serving Natives first, about being “fiercely pro-grandmother” (and thus against the patriarchal mainstream culture), and about practicing within our scope of experience and licensure. Those were the main highlights. I spent the rest of the evening in the medic tent helping with assessments, dressing changes, breathing treatments, etc. It really hit home for me to SEE the wounds caused by the bean bags and rubber bullets, to hand out medication to ease the symptoms of the colds brought on by water cannons and witness the labored breathing of elders and asthmatics irritated by the pepper spray that had been shot at their faces.
I watched one of the other RNs, Blaine, kneel down each time he spoke to a patient. That was so moving to me for some reason. What if Western health care providers knelt, or even got to eye-level with their patients, instead of standing over their sick clients who are often slumped in chairs or laying helplessly hospital beds? Again, speechless, humble awe. It still brings tears to my eyes to think of it.
