Serien bei Apple TV gucken, irgendwie ginge es wahrscheinlich, aber egal

Ich bin zu Besuch bei E., die sich eine handschriftliche Liste der Technikdinge gemacht hat, die ich mir bei der Gelegenheit mal angucken soll. Eins der Probleme besteht darin, dass Apple TV nicht geht, irgendeine Serie gibt es aber nur da. Ich sage, dass ich keine Ahnung von Fernsehen habe, mir die Sache aber gern mal anschauen kann.

Der Fernseher wird eingeschaltet, ein ziemlich großer Flachbildschirm. Ich erwähne das, weil ich selbst alles nur am Laptop und am Handy gucke, selten mit Fernsehern zu tun habe, und deshalb auch 13 Jahre nach der ersten Begegnung immer noch beeindruckt von der Größe und Bildqualität bin.

“Hat deine Mutter so was nicht?”, fragt E. “Doch, aber da sind nicht die ganzen Streamingsachen, sie guckt ja nur ...” Ich bin versucht, “normales Fernsehen” zu sagen, bemerke das Problem und murmle stattdessen irgendwas mit Tagesschau.

E. hat drei Fernbedienungen mit insgesamt bestimmt über hundert Knöpfen in der Hand und findet damit nach einigen Irrwegen (”halt stopp! da war es gerade!”) auch bald das “Apple TV”-Logo. Wenn man es auswählt, erscheint eine Anmeldeaufforderung. Unter anderem kann man dafür einen QR-Code vom Fernseher scannen.

“Mach das doch mal. Mit deinem Handy”, sage ich. “Mit der Kamera-App. Die erkennt das von allein und dann wirst du gefragt, ob du mit dem QR-Code was machen willst.” Im zweiten Versuch klappt das auch, wir gelangen auf die Anmeldeseite und sollen die Apple ID eingeben. E. hat ihre Apple ID in einem Heftchen im A6-Format notiert, aber auch schon durchgestrichen. Mit der gehe es nicht.

“Probier es trotzdem noch mal”, sage ich. Die Apple ID ist lang und besteht aus Groß- und Kleinbuchstaben und Zahlen. Ich diktiere sie ganz langsam und E. tippt sie ein. Ich überlege noch, ob ich sagen soll “und bevor du irgendwas machst, kopier die in die Zwischenablage, falls wir sie noch mal brauchen”, sage es dann aber doch nicht, weil mir das zu kompliziert vorkommt.

Im nächsten Schritt wird die Apple ID noch mal abgefragt. Ich diktiere sie noch mal. E. tippt sie noch mal ein. Diesmal kopieren wir sie aber wirklich in die Zwischenablage.

Diese Apple ID sei ungültig, sagt die Anmeldeseite. Die ID war also zu Recht durchgestrichen. “Drück doch da mal auf ‘Passwort vergessen’”, sage ich. Aber an dieser Stelle hat E. schon keine Lust mehr. “Scheiß drauf, die Serie läuft bestimmt auch irgendwo anders”, sagt sie. Und wir wenden uns dem nächsten Problem von der Liste zu.

In the near future, Apple is looking forward to renaming its “Apple ID” to “Apple Account”, aligning with Android users’ reference to ‘Google Account”, as users will access services like iCloud and the App Store through their designated Apple Account. Reports from MacRumors indicate a system-wide rebranding to “Apple Account” in 2024, a possibility reinforced by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman for the coming year.

Mark Gurman, in his most recent newsletter, hints at Apple's intention to rename Apple ID to Apple Account, scheduled for later in 2024, accompanying significant software updates such as iOS 18 and watchOS 11. Apple could potentially unveil this transition at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, allowing developers enough time to adapt their apps before the autumn launch.

Der 150-Pfund-Laptop (Preis, nicht Gewicht)

Ich verlasse nur kurz das Zimmer. Bei meiner Rückkehr ist das Display des neun Jahre alten Macbook Air schwarz, und beim Neustart wird nur ein ominöses blinkendes Folder-Icon mit einem Fragezeichen angezeigt. Ich google Lösungsvorschläge, starte das Macbook im Recovery Mode und öffne Disk Utility, aber dort ist die Festplatte gar nicht zu sehen. Weil ich die Spezialschraubenzieher vom Akku-Austausch noch mit mir herumtrage, kann ich das Gehäuse aufschrauben und an der Festplatte wackeln (nachdem ich gegoogelt habe, wie Festplatten jetzt aussehen, nämlich ungefähr so wie ein RAM-Riegel früher). Nach dem Zuschrauben geht es immer noch nicht. Dann klopfe ich dem Gerät ein paar Mal kräftig den Rücken, und es geht wieder!

“Gleich mal rausfinden, wie man Firefox dazu bewegen kann, sich alle geöffneten Tabs zu merken, denn ich glaube, die wären als Einziges weg gewesen (paar Hundert immerhin)”, sage ich im Techniktagebuchchat. Den Rest der Daten hat Backblaze gerettet, zum vierten Mal. Dann lege ich mir schnell einen Firefox-Account an, mit dem ich alle offenen Tabs, Bookmarks und sonstigen Einstellungen zwischen Geräten synchronisieren kann.

Was ich stattdessen hätte tun sollen: Disk Utility starten. Denn vielleicht ist die SSD ja nur ein bisschen mottenzerfressen, und es wäre in diesem Moment noch möglich, die wichtigen Betriebssystemdaten an eine weniger löchrige Stelle zu verschieben. Aber daran denke ich nicht.

Kurze Zeit später geht das Macbook wieder aus, und diesmal lässt es sich auch mit viel Auf- und Zuschrauben und Rückenklopfen nicht wiederbeleben. Einmal startet es noch, behauptet aber, mein Passwort sei nicht mein Passwort. Der angebotene Passwortreset via Apple ID schlägt mit einer dürftigen Begründung fehl (”dieser Computer darf keine Apple ID mehr haben” oder so ähnlich). Man bekommt bei diesem Resetvorgang einen Code an eine vor Urzeiten mal eingetragene Telefonnummer, reines Glück, dass ich diese SIM-Karte noch habe. Danach passiert außer dem blinkenden Ordner-Icon nichts mehr.

Einerseits bin ich unglücklich, weil es der beste Laptop war, den ich je hatte, und Apple dieses gute 11-Zoll-Format nicht mehr herstellt. Andererseits war ich Anfang 2022 zu einem Betriebssystem-Update von 10.12 (Sierra, von 2016) auf 10.14 (Mojave, von 2018) gezwungen, um das Intranet eines Auftraggebers benutzen zu können. Seitdem hat das Aufwachen des Laptops aus dem Standby-Modus oft alles in allem eine Viertelstunde gedauert. Ich hatte also schon einige Monate Zeit, mich an den Gedanken zu gewöhnen, dass ich wohl irgendwann ein neues Gerät brauchen werde.

Ich schreibe in den Techniktagebuch-Chat: 

“Jetyt hat mir Aleks sein altes Chromebook geliehen. Vermutlich k;nnte ich mit einem Chromebook 95% von allem machen, woyu ich das Macbook brauche, aber die fehlenden 5% st;ren dann doch. Aber so ein Chromebook ist schon an sich keine schlechte Sache, und aberwityig billig. ... Man kann natürlich auch die Tastatur auf Deutsch umstellen. Ein neues Macbook Air würde ungefähr 1600 Euro kosten bei gleich viel Speicherplatz und gleich viel RAM wie das fast zehn Jahre alte, was ist denn das für ein Fortschritt? Dafür bekommt man ja acht Chromebooks! Und gerade jetzt, wo ich nach Jahren des Leidens endlich mein Magsafe-Problem gelöst hatte, haben sie USB-C wieder durch Magsafe ersetzt (beim ganz neuen Macbook Air), und zwar MIT EINER INKOMPATIBLEN NEUEN VERSION.”

Ich habe zwar im Techniktagebuch sehr viel über Magsafe geklagt, aber eigentlich ist es schon für Leute wie mich gemacht, die an seltsamen Orten und in seltsamen Körperhaltungen arbeiten und bei jeder Gelegenheit über das Rechnerkabel fallen. Bei den neuen Magsafe-Netzteilen ist immerhin das anfällige dünne Kabel separat ersetzbar.

Mit “95% von allem” ist gemeint, dass ich 95% des Jahres alles machen kann, aber spätestens bei der Herstellung der nächsten Techniktagebuch-Buchversion an die Grenzen des Chromebook stoßen werde. Denn dafür brauche ich eine vollständige TeX-Installation, und die Produktion des vieltausendseitigen PDFs hat schon auf dem Macbook jedes Jahr ziemlich lange gedauert. Außerdem möchte ich gelegentlich Inkscape verwenden und eine Diascanner-App, für die ich bezahlt habe. Das wird auf dem Chromebook wahrscheinlich alles nicht gehen. (Korrektur: Inkscape ginge vielleicht doch.)

Thomas Wiegold wendet ein: “... ich habe mein MB Air M1 (2020) noch für unter 1.000 Euro bekommen, das scheint vorbei zu sein?” Vorbei ist es nicht, aber man muss dann bereit sein, die nächsten zehn Jahre mit 256 GB Speicherplatz zu leben. Nachrüsten lässt sich nämlich gar nichts, und mangels USB-Slot kann man jetzt nicht mal mehr einen kleinen USB-Stick dranstecken, wie ich es bisher gemacht habe.

Das geliehene Chromebook hat 2 GB RAM, 16 GB Speicherplatz, einen toten Akku und einen Wackelkontakt am Stecker. Wenn man es bewegt, geht es sofort aus. Das ist aber nicht der Hauptnachteil, sondern:

“Meine ganzen Reflexe (welche Tastaturshortcuts für welche häufig gebrauchten Tätigkeiten) werden in dieser Zeit verkümmern, vermutlich dauert das nicht mal zwei Wochen. Kann man natürlich alles wieder lernen, nur waren darunter viele, die ich erst nach Jahren überhaupt entdeckt hatte und die dann vermutlich wieder jahrelang weg sein werden. Ich müsste mal einen Techniktagebuchbeitrag `alle meine Shortcutreflexe` aufschreiben, aus dem ich sie dann wieder rekonstruieren kann. Nur geht das ja jetzt gerade leider nicht mehr! ... Aber um auch mal zu sagen, was besser geworden ist: Es ist toll, dass man jetzt immer mindestens ein Zweitgerät hat, mit dem man Fehler des Erstgeräts googeln und sich bei anderen darüber ausweinen kann. Das war früher sehr schwierig (glaube ich), als man immer nur eines hatte.”

Stundenlang betrachte ich sehr teure Macbooks und bin hin und hergerissen zwischen "Ok, es muss halt sein, ich kaufe den teuersten Laptop aller Zeiten, und dafür reicht sein RAM dann auch für die Betriebssystemupdates der nächsten zehn Jahre" und "irgendwie schon auch sehr toll, die extreme Billigkeit vom Chromebook, bestimmt wird es nie geklaut und man kann es mit dem Auto überfahren, ohne dass es kaputtgeht".

Weil ich mich nicht entscheiden kann (und Umsatzsteuer-Ärger befürchte, wenn ich in Großbritannien teure Hardware kaufe, außerdem bekommt man hier keine “refurbished”-Geräte mit deutscher Tastatur) bestelle ich erst mal ein neues Chromebook, und zwar ohne Vergleich von Fähigkeiten einfach das allerbilligste. “150 Pfund! Weniger als ein Handy!” 

Später wird mir klar, dass es wahrscheinlich blöd war, "das ist ja weniger als ein Handy" zu sagen, denn die Rechenleistung ist vermutlich ähnlich wie beim Handy, aber es ist viel mehr Platz im Gehäuse für größere, billigere Bauteile. Stelle ich mir jedenfalls so vor. Vielleicht ist es auch wie bei Stereoanlagen nach Erfindung der CD und in so einem Gehäuse ist nur ein Handy und viel Luft.

Zwei Tage nach dem Tod des Macbooks halte ich das neue Chromebook in der Hand. Es hat 4 GB RAM und 32 GB Speicherplatz und ist rundum üppig mit USB- und anderen Steckplätzen versehen, in die man zusätzlichen Speicher stecken kann, wenn man welchen vermisst.

Ich bestelle zusätzlich eine externe SSD mit 1 TB Speicherplatz. Denn so kann ich noch in Großbritannien, wo ich schnelles WLAN habe, damit anfangen, mein Backblaze-Backup runterzuladen. Und externen Speicher werde ich sowieso brauchen, egal, ob ich jetzt beim Chromebook bleibe oder mich auf die karge Macbookausstattung einlasse.

Zum Aufschreibezeitpunkt benutze ich das Chromebook seit vier Tagen, und bisher fehlt mir nichts, außer vielleicht Tastaturbeleuchtung und die Möglichkeit, Gedankenstriche einzugeben. Das Display ist sicher nicht so besonders, aber da geht es mir wie mit SD und HD beim Filmegucken: Ich habe Jahre meines Lebens mit monochromen Röhrenmonitoren und faustgroßen Pixeln zugebracht, mir wird alles, was danach kam, für immer großartig erscheinen. Die Akkulaufzeit ist besser als beim alten Macbook. Ich lasse es sorglos im Auto liegen, anstatt es wie meine Macbooks überall mit mir herumzutragen.

Gewöhnungsbedürftig ist nur, dass ich mit meinen falschen Tastaturshortcut-Reflexen ständig den Techniktagebuchbeitrag lösche, den ich gerade schreibe, indem ich versehentlich das Tab schließe. Aber weil Chrome sich von allein an alle Plugins erinnert hat, die ich verwendet habe, als Chrome im Februar zum letzten Mal mein Standardbrowser war, kann ich das Gelöschte mit Hilfe des Plugins “Typio Form Recovery” wiederherstellen.
