can I ask a dumb question (dorothy in my head: better than anyone I know)

1. how were you able to figure out whomst does the stigma test? is the file labeled or something cause I listened to it a bunch of times and did not guess right

2. less for you and more for the room: how tf did the mc not recognize him?? (I say as I literally just said I could not do it either lmao) but I feel like in person it would be way more obvious too

Audio files are labeled with character names(or titles/aptonyms like 'sinostra student'), with the exception of the janitor who wasn't labeled at all until this most recent chapter. When I checked, that line of dialogue said "haku". The PC also mentions that it smells like incense when their hand is held for the stigma test and in one of Haku's later character stories they mention the smell of incense when he offers them his hand. I don't think it's supposed to be something you realize until way later!

The PC only just met him that day, briefly, and had had a hell of a day since he dropped them off. His voice is also a little different when he does the test imo--and they were super stressed out and overwhelmed by everything that had just happened and that they were blindfolded and hooked to a bunch of vital monitoring machines. I doubt they would have even been able to consider 'this voice is kind of familiar' for someone they'd just met! But maybe that's my bad memory talking. I barely recognize people when i've seen them a few times. I don't think I could identify most people by voice and the feeling of their hands alone.

Commentary

This tablet contains more than 2000 litres of aromatic materials – likely for restocking rather than one particular perfume.

o-do-ke – ho doke – “thus X gave.” Introductory particle o/jo and the unaugmented aorist of δίδωμι. This is more likely to be a delivery than a gift.

a-ko-so-ta – Alksoitas. Believed to be one of the chief officials at Pylos. It has been suggested that this might be the identity of Hand 1.

tu-we-ta – Thuestai – “to Thyestes”. Dative singular of a personal name. This seems to be an aptonym fitting the man’s profession, since tu-we-a means “aromatics.”

a-re-pa-zo-o – aleiphazoos - “unguent boiler”. Compound of two stems: ἄλειφαρ  – “unguent” and ζέω “boil.” Unguent boiling was the technique of boiling olive oil with spices and other materials to infuse it with their scents and properties.

tu-we-a – theuha – “aromatic substances” – accusative plural of an s-stem neuter plural. Oldest alphabetic instance of θύος means “burnt offering,” but Homer uses it to qualify ‘perfumed’ oil.

a-re-pa-te – aleiphatei – “for unguent.” Dative singular of purpose.

ze-so-me-no – zessomenoi – “to (be) boil(ed).” Dative future middle participle. Originally -ss- because the s survives between vowels. This is middle in form, but likely passive in meaning. The -θη- element of the future and aorist passive is a post-Mycenaean innovation and thus we cannot differentiate middle and passive participles in these tenses.

ko-ri-a2-da-na – korihadna - “coriander.” Also written ko-ri-ja.

AROM – generic ideogram for commodities measured by dry units and do not have their own ideogram.

ku-pa-ro2 – kuparyos – cyperus. Cf. κύπαριος, κύπειρον. A reed related to papyrus. Used for banquets, perfume, and animal fodder in Linear B tablets.

*157 – unknown ideogram.

KAPO – monogram of the two syllabogram KA+PO or PO+KA. This sometimes means karpos – “fruit,” but seems unlikely here. Here Killen interprets KAPO as karphos – “fenugreek@ Could also mean “bark.” Classical Greek κάρφος.

VIN – wine. Used in unguents according to Greek authors. Two different ideograms differing in their number of vertical lines and represent two different products. WINEB must be a liquid akin to wine, but hard to identify. WINEB is described as sweet on some tablets, so maybe this is wine that has only partially fermented. Perhabs WINEA is fully fermented then?

LANA – wool. Unusual for making unguent? But raw wool is rich in grease (lanolin), which Greek authors describe as one of the ingredients used for the making of unguents. (Killen) ME – honey. Abbreviation for me-ri (μέλι).

1. How did you choose their name?(Phoebe)

So Phoebe is one of few characters of mine where I intentionally decided their names based on their themes/motifs! her full name is Phoebe Tinnes, which is a loose aptonym (literally when on a rabbit hole search to figure out this term 😂) of Photinus, a genus of fireflies; because Phoebe’s superhero gimmick was based on fireflies!

7. What attribute of them (some facet of their personality, their history, their look, or whatever etc) would you find most important to somehow preserve if they were transplanted to an AU fanfic? (Joy)

I mean, in every universe Joy is constantly making sex jokes and being 100% committed to the bit. But I also consider Joy’s past lives and her twin soul to be a deep part of her character! I toyed with thoughts about a real world AU where Joy would have DID, her past lives (and Irvan) being alters. I’d have to do a lot more research into the condition in order to do it respectfully and accurately tho 😅

I first took up the name Anathema as a cynical aptonym, then as a mantle I clung to, and now it has settled to rest on my shoulders as many names do in time.

I enjoy the discordance of it.

32: I do not really think of star signs for the most part. It is interesting and sometimes accurate, but other times it is far off. Some people use them to excuse their manipulative tendencies, or to judge people without knowing them truly. I do not have much of an opinion on them though. Nor do I mind if other people put a lot of thought and hope and time in them. As long as people realize that there is more to a person and their actions than their time of birth, I think it is interesting enough. But not really something I am terribly interested in. It is a tool, and nothing more. If you put a lot of energy into it, then you will get more from it than someone who does not. But it is not the only way to interpret someone. I find my own intuition and senses to be a better tool for myself, personally.

64: Time is relative. It changes according to our perception: how focused we are, how busy or free we are, the changing of the seasons, the darkness and light. Some days span on for an eternity, yet some pass in the blink of an eye. The future seems so far off, as does the past, and the present is always moving. What seems far off sometimes is relatively close, depending on how you choose to see it. I have never been one to care too much about the clock, or to focus on our modern measuring of time. Most days I do not even know what day of the week it is, nor the number of that day, just that the time is passing and we are moving cyclically through the seasons, that the moon's face is hiding or showing, and that the sun is once again low on the horizon or high in the sky.

93: Some dreams have meaning, I think. We often dream about things that we are thinking throughout our lives. Sometimes the imagery is a metaphor, other times it is blunt and straight to the point. Some dreams are messages from our higher selves, or our intuition, some are our due to our brain trying to work out some anxiety or stress, and some are just creative playtime, I think. It depends. Anything can have meaning if you choose to see it.

I don't know if this is relevant (or more likely, has already been mentioned), but Boq's name is super duper fitting. Why? I don't know if the author was a Trekkie or not, but in Klingon "boQ" is the verb "to aid/assist" and that's basically all Boq ever does. First he does everything to try and aid Galinda to get her to notice him. And then he practically becomes a servant for Nessa. And finally he inadvertently helps the Wizard by assisting the witch hunt for Elphaba. His entire function is to assist others (granted, with self-serving motivations), and the fact that Maguire chose the name Boq for him is kinda funny. It's like a weird Klingon aptonym in the middle of Oz.
