The 28th Arab Film Festival is happening in San Francisco from October 24th-October 3rd! There is also a virtual pass available for those in North America not in the area!
I'm not American so unfortunately won't be able to check out this awesome festival but I really recommend it to those in the US/North America, the titles released so far look awesome and on opening night they're screening 'Life is Beautiful: A Letter to Gaza' which is a Palestinian documentary. Alana Hadid will also be present at their screening as it's being distributed by 'Watermelon Pictures' which she's the creator and creative director of.
More information about the films and passes at the link below.

F is for Flippy (and a fuming furious Fliq) frantically fleeing from fanatic fans at a fall forest festival.
While I was feeling nostalgic over favorite childhood books, I was suddenly in the mood to make an alphabet illustration. Here you'll also find "Flounder fishing for French fries" and "Fix-It Felix fixing a fondue fountain for some foxes and a ferret".
I counted over 60 different F words and things represented here (although I could have also missed some). This includes technicalities like "face", "fur", "finger", "fabric", and "fast". Can you spot them all?

Watching the Pro Palestine movement implode in on itself the past couple of days on Twitter/TikTok after they went full racist against Black Americans (calling them racial slurs, colonizers, genociders, etc.) is so fucking cathartic. People have tried to warn everyone for months that this movement was just as racist as it was antisemitic, with the Pro Pals using watermelon imagery, the way Arab Palestinians call Black Palestinians "slaves," the history of Arab colonization in Africa and the slave trade, etc. But now it's all out in the open, all because whites and Arabs thought they could treat Kamala Harris the same way they treated Joe Biden and had the audacity to tell Black people they should throw away their hard-earned vote "for Palestine."
And today the Pro Pals have also started targeting their previous white LGBT allies. This one is a massive case of "leopards eating my face," so I'm not crying for Queers for Palestine here (they deserve it), but the whole movement - at least here in America - is falling apart at the seams.
Doesn't appear to have trickled down to Tumblr yet, but there's been a massive vibe shift on other social media.
PLEASE tell me more!
I am not even the slightest bit surprised, and remarked on the exploitative and abusive behavior of Palestiners towards African-Americans years ago:
As a Jew, I’ve seen my share of strained, socially-expected marriages being held up as an intended example For The Good Of The Community (tm).  And I’m telling you right now – this particular arranged, loveless, abusive coupling really doesn’t look like it’s going to last.  There are fewer and fewer attempts to even try to hide the recriminations and spite.  And who’s going to suffer?  The kids.
Anti-Israel revengists will drain #BlackLivesMatter dry, use it up and move on to their next opportunistic spotlight-scenario – probably the killer whales at SeaWorld or something.  Just like they did with one U.N. committee and conference after another, just like one film festival and book fair after another, just like Arafat himself did with first Gaza, then Jordan, then Lebanon, then Tunisia.  When someone only cares about themselves, you cannot “ally” with them – you just get used by them.

Alexander Durie 23 May, 2024
The Cannes Film Festival this year showcased screenings from the Middle East and North Africa that captured significant attention.
The New Arab has curated a list of the top seven films premiered there, and we highly recommend giving them a watch.
The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024)
Director Mohammad Rasoulof – Iran, France, Germany
In the bustling streets of Tehran, the life of Judge Iman takes a drastic turn when he discovers his gun missing, leading him to suspect his own family, including his wife and daughters. The film explores the intricate dynamics of familial relationships, as suspicion and distrust put their bonds to the ultimate test.
Despite facing an eight-year prison sentence in Iran, Director Mohammad Rasoulof's determination to present this story at Cannes highlights the enduring power of artistic expression in challenging times.
Norah (2024)
Director Tawfik Alzaidi – Saudi Arabia
Transporting audiences back to the conservative landscape of 1990s Saudi Arabia, Norah introduces us to Nader, a newly arrived teacher in a remote village, and Norah, a spirited young woman yearning for freedom. Their secret affair blossoms amidst the shadows of societal restrictions and impending danger, fueled by their shared passion for art and beauty.
Against the backdrop of a repressive society, the film serves as a reminder of the power of love and the human spirit's pursuit of liberation.
youtube
To a Land Unknown (2024)
Director Mahdi Fleifel – Palestine, UK, France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Qatar, Saudi Arabia
To a Land Unknown tells the story of Chatila and Reda, two Palestinian cousins in Athens, Greece, aiming for a better life in Germany. They face tough challenges as refugees, pushing themselves to their limits. Their journey highlights the struggles of seeking refuge and finding hope in difficult times.
youtube
Across the Sea (2024)
Director Saïd Hamich Benlarbi – Morocco, France, Belgium, Qatar
Across the Sea follows Nour, a young immigrant who comes to Marseille, France, for a better life. He faces tough challenges surviving on the outskirts of society, getting involved in small crimes with an uncertain future. But meeting Serge, a charismatic but unpredictable cop, and his wife Noémie, gives Nour hope.
The story spans from 1990 to 2000, showing Nour's search for love, identity, and belonging in a world that's changing fast.
youtube
East of Noon (2024)
Director Hala Elkoussy – Egypt, Netherlands, Qatar
East of Noon welcomes viewers into a fantasy world rooted in Egyptian folklore. It follows young Abdou, a musical prodigy who defies tradition with his music. As Abdou's melodies resonate across the timeless landscape, he confronts the norms, embarking on a bold journey of self-discovery.
Director Hala Elkoussy's tale celebrates Egypt's cinematic heritage, with enchanting characters and captivating storytelling that transport audiences to a realm of limitless imagination.
The Brink of Dreams (2024)
Director Nada Riyadh & Ayman El Amir – Egypt, France, Denmark, Qatar, Saudi Arabia
In a remote village in Upper Egypt, a group of young girls breaks societal norms by forming a street theatre group. They dream of a life beyond their traditional upbringing. Through daring performances, they challenge the expectations of their Coptic families and local communities. Daughters of the Nile, filmed over four years, shows their journey from rebellious teens to empowered women.
This film is a powerful story of resilience and strength, capturing their universal longing for self-discovery and freedom.
youtube
Everybody Loves Touda (2024)
Director Nabil Ayouch – Morocco, France, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway
In the charming villages of Morocco, Touda dreams of a life beyond what society expects. She wants to become a Sheikha, a traditional Moroccan performer. Despite facing criticism from her community, Touda finds comfort in her music, singing about resistance, love, and freedom. Every night, she performs in local bars, her voice filling the streets as she imagines a better future for herself and her son.
Driven by a desire to break free from tradition, Touda sets her sights on the bright lights of Casablanca, determined to make her own way in a world full of opportunities.

How do we Boycott Correctly?
( transcript of BDS video made by Abdallah Denwar + ressources)
We can split the products we're boycotting into 4 categories:
A. Products made in Israel: Most of them are not distributed in the Arab region but activists in the West have begun to talk about them and raise awareness on the necessity of boycotting them. (including: Ahava cosmetics, Sabra Hummus, SodaStream...etc.)
B. Products that enable the Occupation: Carrefour is involved in real estate projects within the settlements, HP provides technologies and software systems that facilitate the monitoring and suppression of Palestinians in and outside prisons. CATerpillar designed bulldozers dedicated to the occupations which contributed to the demolition of Palestinians' infrastructure and demolish their homes and Puma is the official sponsor of the Israeli national football team.
C. Brands supporting the Israeli State: this is the most important thing we have a role in because these are the products that are directly involved in our lives. Food, drinks, skincare perfumes and so on. Cutting these products is influential because:
1) we are pressuring companies whose founders support the occupation and directly decreasing their profits.
2) we plant fear within any new companies from considering future partnerships with occupation, thus losing their credibility as a natural entity that can create successful economic relations.
3) we provide opportunities for local products to develop and increase their production.
(products including: Starbucks, McDonald's, Nestle, Coca-Cola, Papa John's, Disney+, Marks & Spencer, L'Oréal, Domino's, Maggi, Nestle...etc)
D. Events and activations by the occupation: Includes Conferences, concerts and tours of artists that take place Events and activities include art exhibits, film screenings, festival, plays, conferences, performances (music, dance, etc.), tours, among other activities.

Tomorrow, at 12pm in Toronto, after a screening of Mohammad Malas's film The Dream, I will be in conversation with Palestinian curator and writer Nasrin Himada.
Buy tickets for the screening here.
The Dream, a film by Mohammad Malas, is filmed in the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila, shortly before the massacre of 1982. Malas’s documentary focuses on dreams and dreaming by documenting Palestinians recounting their dreams. In this way, the film plays on a double register, whereby Palestinians recall the reality of their everyday lives transposed into their dreams, nightmares, and premonitions. Ultimately, these dreams tell the story of longing for our land: the dreams make the light. Malas is a prolific filmmaker, working in art, fiction, and documentary. After teaching philosophy at Damascus University in the 1960s, he turned to film and has since produced numerous award-winning works, notably a series of powerful documentaries on political prisoners in the Arab world. He has also published novels and writes frequently on Arab cinema.
