Thoughts on ARCADEA / AWOL
Quite a while ago now I played the ARCADEA demo on stream with my good friend Purea Patel⊠I'm only writing this review(?) so much later because Ive just uploaded the VoD.
To get things started, ARCADEA Is an upcoming RPGmaker game in which you take control of Maisie, a mute girl on a quest to find her brother Jas. To do this, we must go through the world of Arcadia. It should be noted that Arcadia here does not refer to the Greek province, but instead refers to one of the interesting phenomena that can be found here: you see, In everyone's dreams lies an Arcade machine which represents their innermost psyche or something. It seems that we can go into these arcade machines for⊠reasons. Something to do with a cat? Here's the problem with writing a review of sorts from memory months after I've played something, A lot of the exactitudes of the game story have become hazy in my mind. For instance, I remember there was a talking cat who acted slightly sinisterly and seemed to be important somehow⊠The only other thing I remember about him is that we made him Australian for some reason. A lot of my recollection is like this, so from now on ill just mention the stuff that's stuck with me the most about the game.
Firstly, I must mention the art here, especially the character portraits. It's very good, I feel like all the main characters have very distinct designs, they're all vaguely colour coded in these nice lighter colours which both makes every character easy to tell apart which also giving them a nice sense of cohesion. It's all very cute, and this carries over to the level art, which also has pleasing pallets whilst keeping a good sense of variety between zones. Secondly, I must mention the minigames: they are of paramount importance in a game literally structured around arcade machines, and they most certainly do not disappoint. Even this demo has quite a few varied little gameplay segments, and it honestly does better in them than even some other extremely well produced or popular RPGmaker games like Pocket mirror, which relies a bit too heavily on variations of the chase sequence. Of course ARCADEA isn't exempt from having one or two chasers, close to the end there's a chase sequence against a paintbrush monster thing⊠but at least there is a mechanic there where you can leave bait for the monster to stall it a little. The other games are a bit more interesting though, for instance there is a puzzle in which you have to stand on a certain spot and then line up a piece of paper to reveal a symbol that tells you what direction to go next. It's a bit like that one forest sequence from Metal Gear, except in Metal Gear, the devs just left you to flounder until you got out. There's also one or two quick time button presses that I was very bad at⊠but it's also an interesting change of pace from other games I've played.
Last thing I'd want to mention here is that in one scene you are put in a greenhouse and told to draw one of a few plants highlighted in the room, except there was also a random set of vines highlighted that had nothing to do with this, and I was very disappointed when I couldn't try to select the random set of vines over all the pretty flowers to draw.
Anyway, all in all I had a very good time playing ARCADEA, and I'm excited for the full release. I would highly suggest that you play the game for yourself, you can download it here.
After we finished that demo on stream, me and Purea still had a fair amount of energy left, so we decided to look at the other game that the ARCADEA dev has worked on, A Wave Of Lights (AWOL). It's a cute little visual novel about a shut in girl meeting an alien girl and then, like, being gay for two hours. I've not much to say on the actual game itself since it's relatively short, It's just well written and the art is also cute. I will say that, uhh, I made some choices on the stream's end that might have impacted the drama of it a tad⊠When we played it we decided to voice one character each and whilst Purea gave a pretty neutrally toned voice to the main character, I heard that the other character was an alien and like⊠I can only decide the voice I went with as somewhere between Skeletor and a Dalek, because alien. It was really something going into the more dramatic or serious scenes with the characters opening up to each other and whatnot, where Purea was playing it 100% straight, and I was doing the silliest goddamed voice I have ever attempted.
to close this out, I should say that the Dev for Arcadia is named Aishin, and you can find them here on tumblr @arcadea-rpg.
Whilst Aishin was the artist for AWOL, it seems that the writer and lead dev listed was Tabby Wright, who you can find here.
AWOL itself can be downloaded from here, and finally you can find the VoD for my stream here.

Arcadea
Hello, and welcome to âRPG Maker One-Hour Game Review #6,â where Iâm exploring Arcadea, a beautifully illustrated and puzzle-laden visual novel made by Aishin, an RPG Maker developer and artist.Â
Engine: RPG Maker VX Ace
Background: Since my project, Worlds They Dream, is a storytelling-heavy JRPG set in a dreamscape, I thought itâd be good to play other RPG Maker games with those qualities.
Overview: In Arcadea, you play Maisie, a dreamer looking for someone important to her, when the world just closed its gates to travel.Â
Immersion: Maisie touches my heart because sheâs mute; she writes in order to communicate. The autistic part of me that feels this way connects with Maisie deeply.
But even if Maisieâs communication methods donât strike a chord in you, other aspects of Arcadea feel like deju vu or collective unconsciousnessâlike youâre experiencing a dream alongside Maisie, rather than acting as a mere observer.
This isnât a good game to pick up if youâre looking for something fast-paced. Youâre meant to slow down, contemplate, and enjoy the aesthetics. That said, I wouldâve liked if the music changed in town a little more frequently.
Takeaway: I was delighted by the puzzle in the forest! Actually, I felt intrigued with most of the mechanics, from the lily pads to the terrifying squirrel.
I wholeheartedly recommend others try this game. When Iâm done with my one-hour reviews, thisâll be a title I come back to finish.

Ooooo for the childhood friends i think that sometimes they would go on arcade as a hangout mostly after class? I feel like s/o and himmel would get dragged by venti or maybe the s/o asks to join with them. I actually headcanon that both twins are surprisingly good with rhythm arcadea mainly because their reaction time is good.
Arcade dates with either of them is so sweet aaaarghhhh *cries*
- âïž
I can see ventiâs the one who often asks you two if you wanna go to the arcade to have fun. Itâs still early so why not play some games? And i do agree with you the twins are good with rhythmic games!
I think venti will be good at playing dancerush stardom! Heâs going to flex his skills to reader and he wants to impress her not just only dancing but also perfect combo-ing the songs. Heâs also good with rhythm arcade games and one of the players who has the highest score!
Himmel will be more on the usual tap tap rhythm games. Taiko, maimai, maybe even guitar hero (lol not a game you can find in arcades but he plays that. Same with venti)
Venti and Himmel also have rhythm games on their phone! I think ventiâs would be more of the idol ones like bang dream or love live while himmelâs more on the story-oriented rhythm games such as cytus and deemo! Psst deemo is his favorite game!
If youâre into rhythm games as well then this is going to be so much fun. After school hours, the three of you will go to the arcade to play some but the twins also want to try different games, maybe theyâll try those crane games and give an anemo plushie to you as a gift.
The two keeps switching and every time they fail to drop down the plushie, theyâll spend more money on the game. Later on they give up. Venti calling the claw game machine a scam while Himmel apologizes for not winning the anemo plushie to you. You decided to try it out and used the trick you have learned from a certain friend, you got three stuffed toys in just one attempt and theyâre both impressed and amazed at your skill.
âWaaah~ why didnât you tell us sooner youâre good with this?â Venti exclaimed and stared at the toy, squishing the body and laughing at its softness.
âOh, Lumine told me a trick to that.â You said and gave the other one to Himmel.
âI see.â The older twin thanked you with a smile and held it close to him. âAetherâs mostly the one whoâs good with these.â You added before grabbing their hands and leaving the place.
The boysâ brows knitted together at the mention of their classmate. Aether? You mean Lumineâs twin? Since when did you start hanging out with him?Could it be that Aetherâs the one whoâs been giving all these plushies to you? Is he the reason why you have so many of them in your room?!

How does one get started in making rpg games? What do you do first? Also could you recommend some rpg maker devs to follow?
Ûč(ĂvĂ)۶ Thankyou for this ask btw!For how to get started in making rpg games thereâs many factors to take accountwhich are:Â
Are you new to rpg maker?Â
If you never use rpg maker I strongly say thatyouÂ
SHOULDNâTÂ go head first and make a super long game. Youcan, but just note that you are going to get stuck on everything. Just making asmall test project to get to know the engine really helps you to know how tobasically use the engine.Â
USE YOUTUBE ITS YOUR FRIEND.Â
Whattype of story do you want to make?
Try to write down the basic ideas of thetype of game you want to make. For example: a game about a young elf girl istrying to find the shard pieces for a star she broke. Just something basic, fora concept it doesnât have to have a million endings and everything the fullgame is going to have.
Demon Teaâs concept idea was basically ademon girl that ran from home and found a village where she met a happy golucky person.Â
Concepts =/= the final game, your concept is just the foundation/ plan ofthe game. Like how you draw guide lines for a drawing, the guide lines arenâtgoing to be in the final picture but its there to help you.
Donât go crazy on your game: Donât get trap in remake hell [PERFECTIONISM]
We all want to make our games amazing and the bestthing ever, but please take in account that nothing can be perfect. Its not abad thing itâs the truth, there is no such thing as a perfect game. Every gamehas flaws but even if a game isnât perfect it can still be enjoyable. Perfect=/= enjoyable.
Enjoyable= how a person felt about a certain thing. I enjoy sonic adventure 2 and itâs avery flaw game but I still enjoy it. Like how people enjoy the movie the room, itâsa very flaw movie but people love it because of the flaws since it makes themovie.
Thoughjust because the game isnât perfect =/= not to care how you made the game, youshould put effort and care into the game. Just remember that the game is somethingyou are doing for fun and enjoyment. Donât go crazy over wanting to make thebest game in the world, since this is a subjective term. Meaning what peopleview as the best is different from you.
Justdo your best and the work will pay off for sure.
Whatis the reason you want to create the game?
Understand your true motive on why youwant to create the game you are making the game and make sure you always rememberwhy you are making the game.
But please note: that you should be makingthe game for fun and because you want to do it, making a game just to be popularcan be a reason but it would be something that drives perfectionist since youare trying to make a game people like rather than a game you care about. This would lead to self-doubt andredoing things over and over never making progress. You can dream about seeingpopular lets players playing your game and having a bunch of people playing it.BUT DONâT think its going to be the next Undertale and get ahuge fanbase of people all around you go crazy about things. Donât expect yourgame to go off the day you release it, donât get upset that you only got 10downloads on day one. Be happy that you did it, that you let your game out inthe world.Everything will pay off but donât justthink youâll get super popular, popularity takes time and just happens. Donâtgo crazy on being popular, rather think of the main reason you want to createthat story.
Popular =/= happiness, itâs nice to havepeople caring about your work, just donât have it all go to your head andstress yourself out into a perfectionist cycle. Â
Trynot to compare yourself to others:
This is something Iâm familiar with, comparingyourself to other devs or games and bashing yourself because âwhy canât I bethat goodâ. Â Please understand this:Â
YOU ARE YOU!
I mean this you are you, donât look at othersand put yourself down since what I learn is that there always someone behindyou looking up to you. You think you are the worst but thereâs people who findyour work amazing. Your work is blind to yourself because you see it every day,but to someone else its amazing.
You must be you, not like dev x and devy. You can be inspired by them but donât doubt yourself on how you canât do thingslike them.
EVERYONE CAN DRAW AND CAN-DO THINGS.  Itâs the matter of learning the skill to getbetter at it. Art is a skill not a talent, its something you master and keepgetting better at. Same with being a dev you get exp points and you level up.Like a rpg tbh since you get exp and level up the more you practice a skill.
Learnto take feedback:
When someone gives you feedback on yourgame there are different types which I wonât cover all of them. Just know youare letting your game out in the public eye, you will have people who tell youthey like your game and others who tell you they didnât enjoy it. If its civilthatâs A-Okay, since its their opinion.
You will get feedback that is critiques whichisnât a bad thing, just understand if itâs someone who is just saying âYourgame sucksâ or âThe protag looks weirdâ without context, this isnât a critique.Donât censor critiques btw, like if people are pointing out things like thegame has plot holes or things that are feedback that can help your work. Donâtyell at them or shut them down, take the advice. Just because the player doesnâtmake games donât mean they canât give you feedback.Â
Feedback is free and helpful so take all you can get from it.
Justdo it:
I canlist everything about being a dev, but this is what I can say to you, just doit. If you are passionate about wanting to create a game just do it. Once Iheard about rpg maker games I didnât ask anyone I just dive head first into it.OvO/ Itâs amazing now that people can ask other devs things like this about howto get into making games.
Beinga dev =/= an alien. No, we are just people who have a huge passionate in storytelling, art, music, games, etc. Making games is a media that lets a person get to seethe world in the eyes of the character.
Withrpg maker it makes it easier for people to get into game making which helpsthem get into another engine. It doesnât matter if you are making a rpg makerbattle system, a spooky horror game, a walking simulator, etc. Make the gameyou dream of making and just do it.
Everythingin the world has been done before, but just take your spin at it, make a gameyou enjoy and donât let others put you down since you want to make a game abouta young sweet female protag that wakes up in a strange world but canât rememberwho they are. Just make the game you want to make.
