The transformed Petersen Museum creates a renewed image for the museum capturing the art, experience, culture and heritage of the automobile, and becomes a worthy neighbor for the buildings of Museum Row, on Los Angeles’ famed Miracle Mile. . Inspired by the form of a car, KPF’s design creates a new “body” around the existing “chassis” of the museum. The rooftop is converted into a party space that can be rented out. A corrugated aluminium rain screen outboard wraps the building, while “ribbons” of angel hair stainless steel and red painted aluminium flow around the building, maneuvering the existing entry vestibule and other apertures. Sitting atop the existing structural system like the body of a car mounted to its frame, the steel “ribbons” evoke a sense of speed and movement and are brushed to avoid creation of glare. The design offers a contemporary interpretation of the mid-century, space-age “Googie” architectural style that characterizes Los Angeles. When you arrive at the house you enter via a formal pedestrian entry. Beyond that is a contemporary Chinese garden which in itself is a playful expression of east meeting west. A bridge over a dry riverbed directs you the office at the rear. The office can accommodate several people and has its own bathroom and kitchenette. This allows for future use as an additional bedroom or granny flat. Resale is always an important consideration and most of the spaces were designed to be flexible in use. It was agreed that one of the most unsustainable things in houses is doing premature renovations. This house was designed with long term vision in mind. . Life is Art. Live a Masterpiece. At the front of the house is a large north facing yard which provides a great space for children to play privately and securely. It leads onto a generous double height front porch which then directs you into the house. The front porch has a dark polished concrete floor with a sealant that allows for the floor to also be a large blackboard for children to draw on. The main living space opens onto this northern yard with a set of quality commercial grade bi-fold doors which open completely. The Museum Garage is located in the Miami Design District, a neighborhood dedicatedto innovative art, design and architecture. Featuring the work of five designers, the seven-story mixed-use structure will feature ground-floor retail spaces and capacity for 800 vehicles.For the project, In 2015, Design District developer Craig Robins, commissioned architect and curator Terence Riley to develop the concept for Museum Garage. WORKac, J. Mayer. H, Clavel Arquitectos, Nicolas Buffe were selected to create the garage’s facades, along with Riley’s own architectural firm K/R (Keenen/Riley).Exquisite Corpse. . Bringing together these designers from around the world, Riley drew inspiration from the surrealist parlor game, Exquisite Corpse. Cadavre Exquis, as the game is known in French, involved a collection of images assembled by various artists with no regard or knowledge of what the other artists have drawn, producing one image whose components don’t necessarily match but flow together as one playful composition. Under Riley’s direction, each participating architect was eventually assigned an area and depth to build out and given free reign to create fully individual designs. The site surrounded by the leafy woods close to the golf course in Minamigaoka Karuizawa, was planned to have its building lower than treetops of the woods to coexist with neighboring buildings. . The owner lives a busy life as a doctor, and he requested for a quiet environment where he could get away from daily life for a moment and feel refreshed in nature. His wife also wanted a relaxing house from a visual point of view as well, where a large living space is unified with green of the woods. . A deep eaves with 1.700mm depth was adopted to realize construction of this living space. A comfortable middle area created with deep eaves is also a device to very naturally bring the surrounding greens to indoor. The architecture concept is from the idea of ‘oriental sunrise’, emphasising the integration of the nature and the building, whilst introducing the ‘architecture language’ for the hotel by using 20 vertical warps, representing cooperation and harmony. . The main structure system is a combination of mixed structure system which utilises concretefilled tubular column together with steel beams, and a concrete core. The whole building is supported both vertically and horizontally by the concrete core with steel structure beams within. Combining the horizontal and vertical frames, the lantern-shaped structure system not only fulfills a structure that can withstand up to a level eight earthquake, but also creates the ‘sunrise’ design of the building. . Compared to a normal single tower building, each floor area gets an extra 25% of natural daylight. Four-layered low-E glazing system is used to ensure indoor temperature comfort. Situated in close proximity to Yangzhou’s scenic Slender West Lake, the site given to Neri&Hu to design a 20-room boutique hotel was a challenging one, dotted with small lakes and a handful of existing structures. The design brief called for the adaptive reuse of several of the old buildings by giving them new functions, while adding new buildings to accommodate the hotel’s capacity needs. . Neri&Hu’s strategy to unify these scattered elements was to overlay a grid of walls and paths onto the site to tie the entire project together, resulting in multiple courtyard enclosures. The inspiration for the design actually originates with the courtyard house typology of vernacular Chinese architecture. At the ground level an immense lawn is only interrupted by sandboxes and low vegetation arrangements. Above it, between the foliage of the treetops, we discover the distant views of the ocean (to the South) and the mountain (to the North). . Five white terraces are stacked to allow us to move vertically and experience these different scales of the surrounding landscape.
