ghostie arduino chanukiah
for xanuka this year, i made a little electronic chanukiah that i want to share! i know i’m not the only person who can’t do flame-based candles for some reason or another.
this chanukiah is an online simulation that you can run in any web browser, and it is, in my grandiose and objectively correct opinion, better than any other electric chanukiah out there right now.
Tumblr media
lots of electric chanukiot do a decent job at emulating the visual appearance of a flame-based chanukiah. the goal with this project was to emulate not only the 🕎visual appearance🕎 of a chanukiah, but also the 🔥ritual experience🔥 of lighting the candles and watching them burn.
some neat features of the ghostie arduino chanukiah:
- candle representation: each candle is represented by a stack of LED lights, and you can make the candles any color you want! if you can express it with a hex code, it’s a valid candle color. there’s also two bonus gradient patterns.
- lighting the candles: you press a button to light the shamash, then you light each candle that you want by moving a slider that lights up its light sensor.
- watching the candles burn: after a candle is lit, the top LED begins to flicker like a flame! and after that, the candle slowly and semi-randomly begins to burn down- the top LED goes dark, and the next one in the stack begins to flicker, and so on, until the light goes out at the bottom of the stack.
- clean up: all the candles will burn out on their own over the course of 30-ish minutes(plus or minus like, 20. i should really optimize the burn pattern a little, lol). after that, you can stop the simulation and reset it for the next night.
Tumblr media
it works great on both mobile and desktop, so put it on whatever device you want. a note for mobile users: instructions for use are in the “code” tab, on the top right!

Damian: it's all pretty easy to do Damian: magnetic lock, electronic alarm clock and scales, and the simplest Arduino from a children's robotics kit Damian: a few minutes to figure it out, tinker with it and solder everything together Damian: as a result, the refrigerator is locked, in front of it—scales. If the weight is from 40 to 60 and the time of day is from 6 to 22, the lock is unlatched, full access, if one of the conditions isn’t met—access is denied Jon: I always knew that you were a sadist Jon: but I'm surprised that Marinette didn't kill you after this Damian: well, she did yell a little, but then she just resigned herself Damian: she was the one who asked me not to let her eat after 6pm, so… Jon: wait! Jon: but how do you live without access to the fridge? Jon: do you also stay hungry after 6? Jon: or do you only press on the scale with one foot? Damian: I'm certainly not an engineer, but I prefer engineering solutions Damian: undocumented possibility—with a weight strictly from 4 to 6 kg, time isn’t taken into account and the lock opens in any case Damian: and we always have a spare 5 kg pack of cat food for Alfred the cat at home…

If I may offer a different take:
Oscar is an engineering major, but ppl keep telling him that STEM majors need to round out their soft skills to move up in the world, so he takes on a business minor bc if he's going to learn about how to work w people he can at least be analytical about it.
He manages to get a business internship at a tech firm, and the entire times he's having to learn about how micro/macro economics has an actual effect on this FAANG company, he just wants to be improving his personal arduino project that displays the top three cars at any given moment on race day (he wants to add voice commands so the display will show him the changing position number of a specific driver if he asks it to).
i was nodding along until you got to the part about the arduino project, and then i cackled because. real

So my parents are on vacation and we're housesitting while they're gone.
First 2-3 days brother 1 was here. He's an art curator. He spent a lot of time watching TV shows and laughing loudly but still told me about how stressed he was about the guided tours of his exhibition he has to give and how he was about to stay up until 2 am to prepare the classes he has to teach and everything was complicated and awful and horrible.
Brother 2 arrived tonight for the next 2-3 days. He's an artist. He was drinking a can of beer and he brought a big bag of cables with him. He told me about how the opening of his exhibition is soon so he has to use the time he's here to build an automatic machine with a car's rack and pinion and an arduino board.

Festival of Lights - 1.28" Round TFT display 🔵🎉
To wrap up this year, we're doing 8 days of light-filled designs. We started with the Sparkle Motion Mini
which can drive thousands of shimmering RGB LEDs. Then, we did the Sparkle Motion stick, a USB-pluggable version. Today, we're taking a detour into some very old designs we've been meaning to do for years! Starting with this 1.28" round TFT display that has 240x240 shiny IPS pixels. We have a round outline, two mounting holes, breakout pads for all the control and power pins, plus an EYESPI connector

I've been doing something cool lately.
It's called Pokemon Automation and it's where I do nothing and let a program + arduino run Dynamax adventures for me the entire day. Basically Shiny hunting the max lair for me Automatically.
The bot has better luck than I do.
…hand over your knowledge. PRONTO.

the saga of trigger anon <3
hope it's okay that i'm posting these all at once & responding to them in bulk--they're just all so fucking good and having them all in one place seemed right<3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
dear lord, trigger anon (that's what i'm calling you), these are some fucking amazing ideas.
imagining having my brain scrambled to this degree is incredible. i'd like to expand on your ideas with a potential fix for people with physical disabilities, like myself, for whom counting steps is either not possible or would take a long time; in all honesty, i'm not up on my feet very often if i can help it, and use a wheelchair part-time! i fucking love your ideas, but this was the best way i could think of to add to them, so here goes:
say you have a wheelchair user as your sub/trancee. surely there's a way to either rig a smartwatch or an arduino setup of some sort to count revolutions of the wheels instead of steps. or perhaps distance traveled?
for someone who's bedbound...they sell these stupid-fancy water bottles that have counters on the side i think. using that as your metric, instead of basing it on physical movement, might be a good stand-in as well (no pun intended >.>)
someone with a CGM or heart rate monitor could also be conditioned with triggers aligning w/ their medical equipment, only inasmuch as it's safe to do so, obviously; don't really know how i feel about that idea--but i have neither of those pieces of medical equipment so i'm not as familiar.
how about someone who stims? (obv not a physical disability, i'm now going wild with ideas in other ways lol) give them a clicky thing to stim with, maybe a people counter or whatever...they could try to keep from stimming, but eventually they'll want to...
or if they're like me and have flappy hands, attach a step counter to their wrist so that it counts "steps" when they stim >:) most of my stims aren't object-assisted, so that's how it would have to be for me ahah.
i have Thoughts on what you sent re: the "idle game" trancee situation i posted. here are some more ideas based on that:
love the idea of follower participation--that you all could send in words that make me do things <3 i saw a post once about hypnotizing someone to be a little pornbot, like, every tumblr notification they got made them hornier and happier and dumber, so they'd crave to post a lot of things that got them engagement, and it's lived in my brain ever since lol.
the best way it could work, i think, is to first condition me to avoid clicking a link that says certain words, and then to put my triggers under that link so that my followers know them, but i don't :) a person DMs me the word "trumpet" or some shit and i don't understand why im instantly moaning out loud...
that's another way of tracking "points" that doesn't rely on steps: different note numbers on my own posts = different effects on my body. for extra fuckery, make it different not numbers on any Tumblr post, and condition me to scroll tumblr anytime i get bored (wouldn't take much lol)
gosh, fuck yes to "cheat codes." the right words, actions, or sights in combination = secret level unlock ahahaha. see someone clap their hands together, on the train while seated, *and* be above 600 steps/stims/whatever? for the next week, suddenly there's an erogenous zone on my middle finger that feels exactly like my clit when it rubs against anything.
eaten an egg that day, have edged at least 12 times, *and* got a follower to cum? for an hour, i drool uncontrollably...fuck i could go on forever.
last one, since i said "egg." seen a stray cat that day, have ruined once, *and* have a song stuck in my head? i'm suddenly convinced that i'm full of an alien's eggs, and incredibly embarrassed about it.
stacking triggers this way is super fun. i think sometimes it's hard for my owner to visualize how conditioning/hypno works for my brain--still figuring it out myself--but visualization (for me) is the best mode of conditioning. imagining myself like an idle game, where the character (me) is encountering different combinations of gameplay (idle triggers), helps me be more receptive to conditioning.

The Legendary ThinkPad T480s
Tumblr media
I recently got myself an old Lenovo ThinkPad T480s for just $230—a real steal for this iconic machine. The model I got had the i7-8650u and 16GB RAM. Even though it’s about 7 years old, the ThinkPad T480s still holds legendary status among laptop enthusiasts. A quick search on YouTube and you will find a ton of recent videos praising its robust build, exceptional keyboard, and solid performance. There's almost a cult like following for this ThinkPad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right after purchasing, I opened up the laptop for some essential maintenance. I disassembled the heat sink/heat pipe/fan assembly and thoroughly cleaned the fan with a brush and compressed air duster. After cleaning off the old thermal paste from the heat sink and CPU using IPA, I reapplied some Kryonaut Thermal Grizzly paste to ensure optimal cooling performance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Over the next two days, I set it up with Ubuntu and installed a bunch of development tools like Visual Studio Code, Python, Jupyter Notebook, and Arduino IDE. Additionally, I configured VirtualBox to run a Windows 10 Pro VM for flexibility.
To enhance seamless workflow between my ThinkPad and Mac, I configured Syncthing for effortless file synchronization and CopyQ for shared clipboard functionality. For backup, I am using Timeshift for system snapshots and Déjà Dup for user files. Installed Gnome Sushi and Imagemagick to make file preview work like on a Mac. It's also nice that the Ubuntu dock can be configured to look similar to a Mac.
On top of that, I also installed xremap to do some key remapping for things like copy, paste, quit, etc. to make Ubuntu work more like a Mac, just because the Mac is my main machine and all those key strokes are like muscle memory already. Keep having to change as I switch between using the 2 was a real pain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s it, a brand new old ThinkPad. The ThinkPad T480s remains a fantastic laptop even after all these years, providing stellar performance and an exceptional Linux experience. It’s the perfect budget-friendly yet powerful laptop for developers, makers, and Linux enthusiasts alike.

Essential Skills Every Electronics Engineer Should Master
Electronics engineering is an exciting and constantly evolving field. With new technologies emerging every day, the need for skilled professionals has never been greater. If you're pursuing a B Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering or exploring options at B Tech colleges for Electrical and Electronics, it's crucial to know which skills can set you apart in this competitive domain.
Let’s dive into the essential skills every aspiring electronics engineer should master.
Strong Foundation in Circuit Design
Circuit design is at the heart of electronics engineering. Understanding how to create, analyze, and optimize circuits is a must-have skill. Whether you’re designing a simple resistor network or a complex integrated circuit, mastering tools like SPICE and PCB design software can make your designs efficient and innovative.
Programming Proficiency
Electronics and programming often go hand in hand. Languages like Python, C, and MATLAB are widely used to simulate electronic systems, automate processes, and even build firmware for devices. Engineers proficient in programming can troubleshoot problems effectively and add versatility to their skill set.
Knowledge of Embedded Systems
Embedded systems are everywhere—from your smartphone to your washing machine. As an electronics engineer, understanding microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators is crucial for creating devices that work seamlessly in our daily lives. Hands-on experience with platforms like Arduino and Raspberry Pi can be a great way to start.
Problem-Solving and Analytical Thinking
Electronics engineers often face unique challenges, such as debugging faulty circuits or improving system performance. Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills help them identify issues quickly and find effective solutions. To cultivate these skills, tackle real-world projects during your coursework or internships.
Familiarity with Power Systems
As the world moves toward renewable energy and smart grids, knowledge of power systems is becoming increasingly important. Engineers in this field should understand how electrical power is generated, transmitted, and distributed and how to design energy-efficient systems.
Effective Communication Skills
Electronics engineering often involves working in teams with other engineers, designers, or clients. Communicating your ideas clearly—whether through reports, presentations, or technical drawings—is just as important as your technical skills. Strong communication ensures that your brilliant ideas come to life effectively.
Adaptability to New Technologies
Technology evolves rapidly, and staying updated is essential for electronics engineers. Whether you’re learning about IoT (Internet of Things), AI integration, or 5G communication, an adaptable mindset will ensure you remain relevant and capable of tackling emerging challenges.
Hands-On Experience
While theoretical knowledge is important, nothing beats practical experience. Participating in labs, internships, or personal projects gives you the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned and develop confidence in your skills. Employers often value hands-on experience as much as your academic achievements.
Preparing for Success in Electronics Engineering
Pursuing a B Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering is the first step toward mastering these skills. The best B Tech colleges for Electrical and Electronics not only provide a strong academic foundation but also opportunities for practical learning and industry exposure. By focusing on the skills mentioned above, you can position yourself as a competent and innovative engineer ready to tackle real-world challenges.

THANK YOU so much for that detailed explanation. I have taken and had to pass/fail 😅 1 CS class (python) in undergrad and am hopeless so the details were very needed. I’m curious: are u software engineers or in the CS field?? Anyways thanks again i’ll try and play around with it and follow ur guide when work is being less insane :)) <3 Also got around to actually reading your fic and it’s sooo good eager for more whenever u post ! Have a blessed day.
aw I'm glad it was helpful! you can always ask more questions if anything is unclear.
I study industrial design, I took a few python classes a few years ago (mainly for data analysis). but I had a real long-term special interest in tech and computers (and video games lol) when I was a teenager, so that's when I first got into programming. I feel most comfortable in python, but I've learned a bit of c# for making games in unity, and obviously I've dipped my toes into CSS as well. oh and I've done some robotics projects with an Arduino (based on c++). i did consider studying CS but couldn't cope with a 100% stem degree without any "creative"/artsy elements lmao I don't have what it takes to be a phannie in stem
I'm really glad you're enjoying my fic!! thank you for checking it out. hope you have a great day too <3

Progress Update 11/10/2024
Haven't made a progress update in a bit, but want to keep documenting changes and interations even if they are small. So here we go.
The majority of the focus recently has been on developing the Viewfinder for the Interpreter. One of the major pieces of design I want to incorporate into this is a 3D viewing space, akin to a hologram/projection/Pepper's Ghost. My original plan for this was to modify this design. I saw this concept about a decade ago on Instructables I think and thought it was really cool.
My modifications were going to be using four separate OLED displays each running either the original or a mirrored or rotated version of the original gif/movie/image, rather than a single screen with the four images on it together. There were some pros and cons of this I had convinced myself of, but one of my barriers on progress in this method was related to having the Arduino I am working with not having enough breakout pins for the type of data pins I need for four screens. My soldering skills aren't amazing, so getting four of them hooked into one set of pins was daunting.
However, I found this video a few days ago, and was reintroduced to Retroreflectors. Video goes over the basics of the tech, and even takes it a step further by introducing ways to make it into a "touch screen". However, that's extra complexity and not what I want for this Viewfinder anyway, so it's possible I can just snag the reflector part of their build and significantly reduce the complexity in my own design.
This now leaves potential for a much larger image size, as before I was limited to 128 x 64 pixels, as I wanted to keep the footprint small, which majorly limited screen size to fit with needing to cram four into the space. So bigger canvas size is great! Fewer electrical components is also great! Now is just getting in some sample materials for testing the holographic display part itself.
Another part of the project I've been working on is the music. Less progress here, but I have started to tinker with a program to add in drums which I think will add a much-needed layer to the music I have been working on.
That's all for this one, I am hoping to have materials in a couple weeks, and I am clearing out some sidejobs that also will help fund this endeavor.

GUESS WHO FOUND AN ORGAN FOREVER AGO?
Found an organ (psure it's an AceTone B-422) on the side of the road one day while some guy was clearing out his dad's house, and managed to get this organ for free. Dude said he didn't get a chance to try it out, nabbed it anyway and stuffed it in my room.
Turns out, it doesn't work.
Turns out, it has a bunch of built in features that DO work.
There's a built in vibrato, a built in reverb, a built in Rhythm Ace Drum Machine, and a God Damn Leslie-branded rotary speaker built in. The drum machine, speaker, and rotary speaker all for sure work, and since it's a 60s organ that reverb is pmuch guaranteed to be a spring tank, which is easy to repurpose. The vibrato would be cool to mess with, too. Lastly, there's a "Brilliance" switch which I'm really curious about.
As for the rest of the organ, I have a bunch of options:
1. I rip out all the keys, replace them with modern midi controllers, and turn the whole thing into a custom recording station. Problem is, the two keyboards are 44 keys each, which is pretty rare for midi controllers. They're also bigger keys than normal, so maybe there's a way to make them work, but that also makes the depth of the keys an issue I'll have to tackle. It also means the 13 bass pedals would be useless.
2. I get 1-4 Arduino boards, and rewire the keyboards so I have 2 44-key controllers, 13-pedal controller, and if I wanna get crazy with it the swell pedal and whatever other knobs I want for midi controls. Problem is, I know nothing about Arduino or digital midi, and I'm already diving headfirst into several unfamiliar disciplines for this project as is. DOUBLE problem is, from what I can tell it would be difficult if not impossible to make the original keybeds velocity sensitive. Triple problem is, if I do decide to toss the key beds, I can't go back and Arduino it up later. I'm not gonna be able to hold onto those parts, and there's no way I could justify having a whole second house organ just to reattempt it.
3. I cut my losses, rip out the relevant electronics, and toss the rest
If I go with either of the first two (read: fun) options, it's also worth considering all the space around the keys, where I can theoretically add whatever. I've tossed around the idea of putting a 2x4 group of drum pads, maybe some knobs or even a ribbon controller somewhere. I could even put a screen there, either with real time feedback or built in synths or digital effects (maybe a raspberry pi or small computer affordable to run soundfonts or even VSTi's natively; imagine having a DIY touch screen with drawbars next to the keyboard to adjust settings, that'd be sick)
And none of that takes into consideration the multitude of cosmetic modification options possible; Paint, veneer, upholstery, LEDs, lights, VU meters, metalwork, leather, the list goes on.
I've got a bunch of ideas and I'm in the process of getting the tools together to move forward with this project.
I'm sure I can also upgrade stuff in the future.
But I'm seriously considering turning this thing into the ultimate keyboard performance desk, both for YouTube stuff as well as live (since, theoretically, it'll be a LOT lighter once the speakers and motor(s) are pulled out)
If anyone has experience with doing any of this sort of thing, I'd love to pick your brains for more info on all this stuff. Working on researching for a YouTube video about the project, including a history of the Ace Tone company that made it (with probably too much emphasis on it being founded by the same dude who founded Roland several years later).
It's a big project, but I think it'd be worth it. I'm more excited about this than I have been about virtually anything else in years.

Not sure if we're going to be able to live-tweet/post for Arduino day, lots going on! Right now and a lot / most of it is talking about using AI with Arduino via their upcoming beta free/ $ cloud Arduino AI Assistant and more ... https://youtu.be/4uCY7vdctTE ... CEO of espressif said Python is where it's at :)
