2) the year of…the gay man?? 😂 I think it was all that Mike Wheeler analysis. Like. You took a seat among your friends, dropping your small handbag under the table and settling down into the seat. The café was buzzing with the noise of chatter, conversations you weren’t a part of. Your best friend, Marco, sat opposite you, Armin and Sasha sat at your sides.

You propped the little white paper bag in front of you on the table, Marco’s eyes widening as he saw it.

“Bitch, if that’s what I think it is…” he started, his face lighting up, a grin gracing his lips.

You gave him a shy smile, his eyes boring into yours. “It is.”

You laughed as you pulled out a small, flaky pastry filled with strawberry cream, placing it on top of the bag. Tiny freeze dried flecks of strawberries dusted the surface of the pastry, baked into the crust. It looked very pretty, and the sight made you nervous, anxiety coursing through her veins, causing the room to feel hot and stuffy. Your palms slicked with sweat as you attempted to control your breathing.

“What’s that?” Sasha asked, leaning over you slightly to look at the pastry.

“A strawberry cream pastry.” you breathed, letting out a sigh. “I think I’m finally ready to conquer a fear food.”

It was no secret that you suffered from an eating disorder. Anorexic thoughts had plagued your mind since you were fifteen, bullying you into starving yourself, convincing you to do and abstain from the most ridiculous things. To anyone else, it would have been hilarious, the mere thought of something so incredulous causing them to laugh in your face. But in your mind, it was deadly serious, strange behaviours being put into action as your mind screamed at you to work out six hours a day and to not even brush your teeth, should there be calories in the toothpaste.

You were incredibly grateful to your friends, they never made fun of you or laughed at you when you told them about the ridiculous habits and ideas that you had conjured up from a fear of gaining weight. They would nod along and lend you their ears, talking to you gently, realistically, bringing you back down to earth with soft reassurance. You wouldn’t have ever been able to make it through the past three years of recovery without them.

You let out a heavy sigh, closing your eyes and trying to ground yourself. You felt a soft hand take perch on your thigh, rubbing soft circles into the skin. You opened your eyes and turned to see Armin, looking down at you slightly with a soft, knowing smile on his face. His eyes were warm and kind, filled with understanding and reassurance.

Armin was always so patient with you, listening to you as you vomited out all your disordered thoughts, his logical mind poking holes in your disjointed and disillusioned ideas and bringing you back down to earth, his shoulder perfectly crafted to cradle your face softly as you cried into his shirt. His words, always so meticulously chosen, softly encouraging you as you took tiny baby steps in your recovery.

You smiled back at him before looking back at the pastry in front of you. The sight made you feel nauseous.

You slapped your hands against the top of the table a few times rapidly, trying to get out all the tension in your body. “Why am I so scared?” you exclaimed, looking at Marco.

He laughed, not at you, but with you, understanding. “I don’t know, babe. It’s so silly!”

“It is so silly, isn’t it? It’s just a food. Just a food!” you babbled.

“You don’t even have to eat all of it. Just one bite is more than enough. Baby steps.” Armin said, swiping his thumb over the soft skin of your thigh.

You nodded and took another deep breath, closing your eyes.

“Don’t think about it, just do it!” Connie exclaimed, a large smile on his face, his eyes looking at you expectantly.

You breathed out a sigh before picking up the pastry, pulling at it and breaking off a small piece. Strawberry cream oozed out the wound you had inflicted upon it, the sight making you cringe. But you pressed on.

You huffed out another breath before quickly shoving the small piece into your mouth, chewing, chewing and swallowing as fast as possible before you had time to think about it too hard.

Your fists flew up above your head in triumph, your friends cheering and clapping for you, tears filling your eyes. Marco jumped out his seat and rounded the table, wrapping his arms around your torso and pulling your back against his chest, holding you in a tight embrace. He swung you from side to side as he pressed a rough kiss to your cheek, tears running down his face, overjoyed and elated at your triumph. You let out a giggle as tears fell down your cheeks, chest filled with pride and merriment. Taking a look around your friends, your eyes landed on Armin beside you, the same kind, soft smile still gracing his lips. Pride had ironed over his expression, his eyes glassy as they watered in elation.

As soon as Marco let you go, Armin pulled you into a tight bear hug, holding you close as you cried into his shoulder. The celebration must have been quite a sight for the other patrons and staff in the café, you were sure their eyes were turned towards your direction.

He pressed a chaste kiss to your wet cheek, his lips soft and plush.
